Edible art with wafer sheets

Cake decoration is an art. Cakes can be decorated for special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, baby showers, national or religious holidays, or as promotional items. It is a form of sugar art that uses materials such as icing and other edible decorations. An artisan may use simple or elaborate three-dimensional shapes as a part of the decoration, or on the entire cake. Chocolate is regularly used to decorate cakes as it can be melted and mixed with cream to make a ganache or cocoa powder can be lightly dusted on top of a cake. Similarly, wafer paper is the latest trend to decorate cakes easily and quickly. These printed sheets make it easy to decorate any shape of a cookie. Wafer sheets of A4 Size wrap beautifully around a cake.

The Cochin Bakery, Kozhikode, and Brownnies Bakery, Kannur of Kerala, jointly set a record for ‘maximum edible wafer sheets used for photo cakes’. A total of 900 A4-sized edible wafer sheets depicting various themes such as Women Empowerment, Famous Women Personalities, the G-20 Summit as well as the Post Independence Era in India, and the state of Kerala, etc. were used to celebrate India’s ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ (75 years of independence). The record for ‘maximum edible wafer sheets used for photo cakes’ was set jointly by Cochin Bakery and Brownnies Bakery of Kerala, wherein a total of 900 A4 size edible wafer sheets were used in the photo cakes.

Kerala on March 26-27, 2023. The edible art showcasing brought laurels to the bakeries in the form of a record, under the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records together.

The Governor of Goa, P S Sreedharan Pillai inaugurated the exhibition at the Jawahar Municipal Stadium, Kannur. Vivek Nair, the Adjudicator of India Book of Records was present at the venue to verify the claim of the makers and announced the clearance of the record. Nair then handed over the IBR and ABR certificates and medals to the organisers. The organisers also displayed there the longest eggless brownie measuring 732.15 feet in length, 16 inches in width, and 5 cm in height. The brownie was prepared using melted chocolate, cashew nuts, flour, sugar, vegetable oil, and chocolate butter icing as ingredients.

Ramesh MP, Director of Cochin Bakery, Kozhikode shared with the India Book of Records magazine that since the country is celebrating 75 years of Independence, he decided that along with the display of the longest eggless brownie, the rich history and heritage of the country should also be showcased. For that purpose, 900 pieces of cakes with pictures of people and events that made a significant impact in the post-independence era were displayed. The pictures were made with edible wafer sheets. The showcase included the picture of the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru’s iconic ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech, the amalgamation of States, the nationalisation of banks, sports legends, social reformers, women achievers, and ministers.
