night’s sleep after swimming. They put him in a swimming pool in Kottivakkam.
Lakshay Krishnakumar swam in the sea, covering the distance between Neelankarai and Kannagi Statue, in Chennai, and established a new record for the Asia Book of Records on April 30, 2023. The laurel was preceded by three months of back-breaking practice, not only for 11-year-old Lakshay but also for his support team. He, an autistic child, swam 8.1 nautical miles in 3 hours, and 18 minutes in the open sea, under the coaching and guidance of Sathish Sivakumar, Head Coach, Yadhavi Sports Academy for Special Needs, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
It was in mid-2015 when Lakshay’s paediatrician once commented that he exhibited hyperactive behaviour and that he should be taken to a child psychologist. Later his play school also came up with a similar observation. Then child pathologist, occupational therapist, sensory integration, and speech therapist ferried him to multiple classes assuming he would turn normal. The child showed his love for water during a vacation in Coorg. He did not want to come out of the swimming pool, and he was a little under three years then. His parents realised that he was fond of water and surprisingly had a good
“It’s been more than three years since Lakshay is being trained by Satish and his team. We understood after a while that Lakshay’s strength wasn’t speed but endurance. He could endure long-distance swimming without hassles and would still be energetic. Open Water Swimathon in Kochi also proved it. That is how we decided to try for the Asia Book of Records, and today we are happy that Lakshay swam 15 km at this young age. We also take this moment to humbly request the other parents to let their children pursue what they desire,” said his mother Aiswarya K.
Forty-five days before the event, his parents had registered for it. Getting permission to swim in the seas was the most challenging part. It required a NOC from the Coast Guard
Lakshay Krishnakumar of Tamil Nadu set a record for the maximum distance covered in open sea swimming by a child with autism. He is an autistic child who swam security to organise a sea expedition. For this, they had to submit the disability card and give the boat licence number mentioning details of the boats that will go into the sea when Lakshay swims and the engine for the boat. The information of the coach with a sea lifeguard certificate and rescuer on board are among other documents that were provided.
8.1 nautical miles in 3 hours, 18 minutes in the open sea.
Meanwhile, Lakshay was undergoing a rigorous schedule with his coaches. His trainers included Sentamilan S, Sunil R, Gokulakrishnan VC, Ranjith S, Chandrasekar C, David R, Poulraj G, Sandeep S, Esak Rajavarman M, Muthuraman T, Giridharan
R, Selvam R, and Dhandru D. Every week, two to three sessions in the sea were planned after consulting the tidal chart and weather forecast. On days when a session was on, Lakshay would have to leave home at 4.30 am and he would be back only around 10.30 am. The beach at Kovalam and Neelangarai were two places where they practiced the most. On days when there was no practice in the sea, Lakshay would be taken to a pool with a lesson plan prepared by the coaches. Eswari Andiappan, an endurance athlete working closely with Lakshay for over a year, had worked out a diet plan.
