The Trust at present has 1500 plus members from across India. “I received full support from my family even my 90-year-old mother motivated me to go ahead. student of first-year Mechanical Engineering from Aurangabad Maharashtra, Akanksha breaks all stereotypes. Her zeal for bike riding and adventure motivates her constantly. A shy, introverted girl while growing up, her life changed once she enrolled herself in National Cadet Corps (NCC). “I did residential training and those were the days when for the very first time, I explored myself. NCC became my second line of defence. I got exposed to an adventurous and disciplined life, and thus adventure got into me, and I understood this is something I love to do”, says Akanksha. The moment she turned 18, a year back, Akanksha started learning bike riding on a Pulsar 150. And slowly, she
gained confidence behind the wheels. “It is every biker’s dream to ride to Ladakh, and I too had it on my bucket list. I read an article about Riya Yadav and her record of being the Youngest Female Rider to Ride Khardung-La-Pass, and this motivated me to take this journey. It was a win-win situation for me, not only did I make a record also ticked off one destination from my bucket list,” reminisces Akanksha. Her journey started from Sonmarg on a rented 500 cc Bullet bike. The expedition began from Sonmarg to Kargil, then from Kargil to Leh and then a day later from Leh to Nubra enroute Khardung-LaPass. “When I started from
Leh, I felt nothing, as I was engulfed in the ride. But as I reached Khardung-La-Pass, tears rolled down my eyes, and I was so overwhelmed with happiness that words failed me. I felt I reached a milestone in my life”, says Akanksha. The road to Ladakh was not an easy one; challenges were a part of the journey. The first challenge began when her flight from Pune to Srinagar got cancelled just 12 hours before the scheduled time. Her ordeal continued as no flights were available from either Aurangabad or Pune, so finally, she had to travel to Mumbai and board her flight.“The cancellation of the flight was just the beginning. I am fairly a new rider and mostly rode in easier terrains than that of
Ladakh. I never drove in terrains with off-loops, streamlets, high climbs, steep slopes coupled with freezing cold weather. I prepared myself for the challenges. Yet another major challenge we faced was the multiple times of RTPCR test at every checkpoint due to the Covid-19 pandemic scenario. These experiences I feel added the factor of excitement and adventure to my journey”, recalls Akanksha. Inspiring women and pushing them to break boundaries, Akanksha says, “To all the girls out there, riding has no gender, neither does a bike. A woman riding a bike is as normal as a man riding it. So if you wish to ride, don’t overthink, simply hit the road and throttle away.”
Akanksha Dhananjay Tammewar, 19-yearsold becomes the youngest motorcyclist to conquer Khardung-La-Pass. She started her journey on June 6, 2021, from Sonamarg and completed it on June 13, 2021.
