Stacca-to-Legato

MUSIC: AN EXPRESSION OF THE MIND Building Name: Palace of Arts Location: Exhibition Park, Newcastle Date: 1929 Original Purpose: The Great North Art Exhibition Space Within the UK 1 in 4 adults experience a mental health problem in any given year. While only 50% of these adults are receiving treatment, with many seeking alternatives to drug related treatments, such as music as a form of Arts Therapy. Stacca-to-Legatto will become the Northern Branch of the Nordoff Robbins Foundation, creating the only drop-in music therapy centre in the North. Providing private, comfortable spaces for music therapy to take place on both a one-to-one and group basis. The concept was driven by the oscillation of sound, suggesting a visual musical journey as you move through the building. Whilst taking into consideration acoustics and natural light as well as the existing constraints of the Grade II listed neo-rationalist building.

Key Visual The Key Visual tells little about my design but everything about my project. It is the visual essence and evokes rythems inherent to the site and building. The buildings historic journey is illustarated, explored and defined. It captures the importance of the sites journey in the history of Newcastle, representing the buildings changes through time, to the new use of Music Therapy.

DESIGN RESEARCH The 20,000 word document was a research-based module. It involved critically analysing primary and secondary sources which informed and suported the Major Design Project. This substation design and research document is the culmination of building, environment and subject analysis. It contains all the relevant research needed to begin creating a strategic, yet creative design proposal,

CONCEPT As a result of extensive research into acoustics and music therapy, the concept for the re-development of The Palace of Arts began to emerge. Models helped create a starting point for design. Key words that informed design ideas included: JOURNEY MOVEMENT LEVELS PROTECTION CHAOS

MOVEMENT & JOURNEY Oscillation of Sound

The buildings original constraints had to be considered within the design stage due to the grade II listing of the exerior walls, as well as the ocatagnol central feature dome.

MOVEMENT

DEVELOPMENT The building itself has been divided into three, with private areas either side of the public central strip (Orange). The public area comprises of the main entrance, proceeding to the spiral central viewing ramp climbing at a 1:15 gradient. This connects the building and its users with its local surroundings. This ramp procceds high up into the octaganol dome, with a music library and performance pod located off it. Located at the rear of the building is a state of the art recording studio, with group and solo booths and a control centre. While off to the left of reception is an instrument workshop where broken instruments can be donated for use within the therapy centre. The two private corridors (1 & 2), where the individual, private therapy pods are located. These can be accessed via a ramp ascending at a 1:20 gradient, before descending down into the rear of the building. Despite each pod creating a protected space within a large open space, they look succluded and vulnerable which depits the human emotions within someone with a mental health condition. The plans and sections show some of the development and consideration that took place through out the design process.

SITE MAP The site map was created on the laser cutter. The contours of the site were developed in AutoCAD. The different layers show the undulation within the landscape, whist also linking with my concept of levels within music.
