Kava sessions in the Fiji environment are highly satisfying, particularly when you are visiting Fiji.

d) Ku an n i( Ja y b ‌ ey dn Sy om Fr r A Lette There has been much happening in Australia and Sydney specially with a new Federal government in power and a new Prime Minister, the retirement or resignation of the former Prime Minster, the election of a mining magnate to Parliament, ballots lost in a recount of votes in a very marginal win, a Melbourne student lawyer making it big in Bollywood and Air India resuming daily services to Australia.
Jai(nand) Kumar
Politics—Australia went to the polls in September electing the Liberal-National Coalition Party as the new governing party with a sizeable majority. The last Parliament was a hung Parliament with the ruling Labor Party having to form a partnership with the Greens and Independents to rule for the full 3-year term. The 44th Parliament began its first session in November with Tony Abbott as the 28th Prime Minister of Australia. Of the 150 members of the House Of Representatives 89 seats are held by the Coalition LNP, 55 by Labor Party and 4 by minor parties and there are 2 Independents. The first week of Parliament sitting also saw the most popular Prime Minister in Australian history Kevin Rudd retire from Parliament and politics. In a tearful farewell speech he spoke of his two stints as the Labor Prime Minster once after the 2007 election
9
when his party not only defeated the Liberal- National Coalition but the sitting Prime Minister John Howard also lost his seat thus becoming the second Prime Minister in Australian history to lose his own seat in a Federal election. Kevin Rudd was later deposed by his deputy Julia Gillard in a coup but made a comeback when the Labor Party brought him back as leader to contest the 2013 election against Tony Abbot.
Julia Gillard was replaced because of her unpopularity and on the assumption that she would have led the party to a humiliating whitewash. Tributes were paid by his colleagues and those who were in opposition during his term highlighting his various achievements both nationally and internationally. Rudd will be remembered for saying sorry on behalf of the government and Parliament to the Aboriginal people and the stolen generation (aboriginal children who were forcefully removed from their parents by the Government). History will also credit him for weathering the storm of the Global Financial Crisis with stimulus packages that made Australia the envy of many others whose economies were paralysed by the GFC. He also masterminded Australia’s election as a member to the prestigious United Security Council. Kevin Rudd’s presence on the world stage has been acknowledged by the likes of former British PM Tony Blair and of course the US President Barak Obama. Rudd had been one of the select few world leaders who had direct access to US President. Another interesting feature of the new Parliament is the election of large than life figure a billionaire Clive Palmer who is the sole member in the House of his Palmer United Party. His party PUP is likely to hold 3 seats in the Senate and hold the balance of power there. Clive Palmer is a colourful character and among other projects he has announced plans to build Titanic II.

A Letter From Sydney… continued Melbourne Law Student Makes it Big in Bollywood Phallvi Sharda , born in Perth but bred and educated in Melbourne is now living her childhood dream in Bollywood. Always interested in dancing she established herself as an accomplished dancer on the local scene in Melbourne. Although she was completing her Law and Media & Communications degrees at University of Melbourne her heart and mind was set on a movie career. She moved to Mumbai in 2008 and after winning the Miss Australia/India crown in 2010 she was recognised and landed roles in films like My Name is Khan, Dus Tola, Heroine and and an Australian movie Save Your Legs. However her biggest break came this year when she was pitted against Ranbir Kapoor in the leading role in film Besharam. Although the film was described by some as ‘toilet humour’ and below expectation from the likes of Ranbir Kapoor and his parents Rishi and Neetu Singh Pallavi’s acting and dancing has put her among the ‘stars’. Best wishes to her for greater success!
Air India Resumes Daily Services to Australia India’s national airline and the flag carrier has resumed daily services to Sydney and Melbourne after an absence of 22 years in style with the Boeing Dreamliner 787 aircraft – the first Dreamliner to land in Australia. Jetstar- the budget off shoot of Qantas has since brought in a Dreamliner for its international routes. Air India’s return has been warmly welcomed by the aviation industry as well as the Federal and State governments. The AI311 twelve and a half hour daily direct service will be a triangular route with 4 flights operating Delhi-Sydney- Melbourne route and 3 flights Delhi-Melbourne- Sydney sector. The new service is expected to boost trade and tourism between the two countries with just under 50-thousand seats per year being available. The resumption of the air link is projected to contribute over $30 million dollars to the NSW economy.

t h g i l h g i H i j Fi FREE EDUCATION IN FIJI FROM 2014
The concern for education to all students in Fiji is a highly noble thought of the 2014 budget. Fiji schools have been charging some sort of fee at particularly secondary level. As a former teacher in Fiji and an advocate of free or reasonable fee for students, it thrills me to see the fee free education for Fiji students. It is believed students in Primary schools will not pay any form of fees at all and the secondary students will have free tuition up to form seven level. This will take the burden from parents to fund their children’s basic education. 13

T H E FA R E W E L L O F I N D I A N C R I C K E T S TA R SACHIN TENDULKAR One is compelled to say something or pen a few words or sentences on rare historic events. History is being created in India by the retirement of Indian veteran, cricket star, Sachin Tendulkar. Farewells are occasions of sadness and emotions attributed to feelings of loss. Sachin Tendulkar’s absence will always be felt by the Indian Cricket Team. The cricket icon who has been the most admired Indian cricket star on the field for the last over two decades will be missed by the spectators. The standard of farewell given to the retiring, legendary, veteran star befits only stars of his caliber. Cricket is widely watched in India, particularly when the Indian Team is playing with another country and Sachin Tendulkar has been the star watched by Indians for a long time. One can imagine the feelings of the fans when Sachin Tendulkar will not be seen on the cricket field in the Indian Team any more. However, everything is destined to end one day and so is his retirement from the Indian Cricket Team. He will be seen in the history of Indian Cricket forever.

Road side markets are still common sites in Fiji as people sell their home grown produce along the road sides. This is a site in Nasinu which is Fiji’s most populous town. Some people earn their living by the sales of their produce on the makeshift markets. It is also convenient for the consumers as they do not have to go to markets to get vegetables.
