FIJI HIGHLIGHT A REVIEW ONLY
‘COLLECTING NEWSPAPER FOR OVER FORTY YEARS’—WHAT A HOBBY! People have various hobbies, some are exposed , such as singing, art of painting, sports etc., but there are some hobbies which are truly personal. One such is ‘Collecting and keeping Newspapers .’’ A man in late sixties, originally from Savusavu in Fiji is believed to have made a collection of the HinA Site Along Queen’s Highway—Nadi, Fiji di Newspaper, Picture Taken by Arun Maharaj— Shanti Dut for over forty years. Every issue of the weekly newspaper is believed to be kept by him since the late 1960’s. The Hindi newspaper in those days had a lot of readers and was a popular newspaper. Hobbies give happiness to people as they enjoy it as a form of achievement. The Savusavu man’s, taking his precious collection along with the household when moving to Tavueni to settle there in late 1990’s, despite having shortage of space, shows his level of commitment to his hobby. There seems to be hundreds of copies of the newspaper dating back to the sixties in his possession today.

FIJI FEATURE NAUSORI MARKET RELOCATION The relocation of Nausori market will be a major change for Nausori town. One of the major centers of Nausori, the market seems to be relocating soon. The market has been at the current location for the last many decades providing service to the people of Nausori and greater Nausori. It has been a business place for many, over the decades. Some vendors have spent their entire life selling products at the market. It also acts as a venue for social meets apart from being a business center. The huge population of the Rewa area depends on the market for buying and selling vegetable, fruits and other food products. The relocation of the market will mean a great change for the current market venders and the regular customers. People exactly know which stall to go to for various food products and even I remember where some of products were sold many years ago. The current market venue will remain in the thoughts of people even after the market’s relocation.

INDIA FEATURE ‘LIFE IN A VILLAGE DURING SUMMER HEAT’ Life in a small village is far from the sophisticated lifestyle of the busy cities like Delhi and Mumbai. The harsh heat of the summer is also borne by them, even resulting in deaths of their fellow residents and family members. There are many thousands of villages in India’s cast land and one of the things A VILLAGE SCENE—NORTH INDIA common to them is that their lifestyle has not changed much, unlike the large cities. Villagers share unique lifestyle, totally natural and simple living style. It seemed life had remained the same for the past decades. Change is not something of their choice and moving out of the village and settling in cities is not appreciated by the families and fellow villages. Apart from the social differences to the modern cities, the village has a lot to offer. The village surrounding fill the atmosphere with ‘ peace’ as everything seems so natural as if nature is at its best showering its blessings on the people as they go along with their daily lives. Life goes on and on as generation after generation India’s villages remain much unchanged except supply of tap water and electricity which in some cases have been made available to villages.

A LOOK AT FIJI’S PAST TAKING A JOURNEY BACK TO THE DAYS OF ….
LIFE IN SAMABULA IN THE SIXTIES ... Samabula, one of the major residential areas of Suva today, has been probably the most densely populated area in Suva even in the sixties. The serenity in the settlement, within a few miles of the city proper, was enjoyed by everyone. A life full of fellowship was seen everywhere as sharing happiness and Settlement Along sorrow and caring for one another Rewa Street in had been the lifestyle there. Almost Samabula Today every family was known to each other. Samabula, supposed to be one of the most developed and modern places to live in Fiji, shared a taste of the country style living then, when it came to interacting with neighbors. Religious festivals, bazaars and sporting activities provided key attractions and the real joy of community living. Watching movies in theatres was a priority for many, in those days. The popular ‘Samabula Theatre’ was there to serve for the people’s needs. The settlement was known for Kite flying and friendly ‘kite competitions’ during the kite—flying seasons. Rewa Street, and Waimanu Road, also called the Hospital Road, in those days, were the popular roads then. Dhanji Street, a densely populated street today was not there in the early sixties. Today most of the residents of that era may not be there because of their passing away or migration and even their descendants may not be there in significant numbers because of migration but memories of the good, peaceful times remain. Born and lived there as a child and being part of the lifestyle then, recalling some of the occasions and instances, seems to me, like beautiful dreams today. 13

INSURANCE WORLD BY RAM A. MAHARAJ DALY CITY, CALIFORNIA—USA THE BENEFITS OF INSURANCE Insurance is a requisite and essential part of planning for families. Insurance is also all about protection whether its for protecting the most valuable assets like home, automobile, business, life, properties or mortgages etc. Due to the loss of any of these assets funds are provided for family emergencies, only with the help of having a proper insurance coverage. It also provides much needed funds for the business to continue under key person insurance . It also provides funds for the families in case of death of the homeowners or the main bread earner so the families can keep the home, educate their children and continue their lifestyle beyond. Insurance plans also have living benefits which means that one does not have to die to get those benefits such as critical illRAM A MAHARAJ ness like heart attack , cancer, kidney failures etc. Other living benefits also include cash values which can provide cash in future, returns of premiums, accelerated death benefits etc. Besides there are a lot of other benefits. Remember insurance is very diverse and sometimes choosing the right type of coverage is quite difficult for some consumers. Thus seeking the help of a trusted adviser is quite helpful in planning the insurance needs of a family.— RAM A. MAHARAJ—INSURANCE SPECIALIST 650—580 6254 - 650—872 7004

RARAWAI SUGAR MILL—BA THIS IS A SITE AT THE RARAWAI SUGAR MILL BELIEVED TO BE SET UP IN 1886. IT HAS BEEN SERVING FIJI FOR THE LAST ABOUT 130 YEARS. BA HAVING A LARGE AREA MOSTLY OF CANE FARM HAS BEEN USING IT AND RELATING ITSELF WITH IT WHEN IT CAME TO SUGAR INDUSTRY. THE SUGAR INDUSTRY SAW ITS UP AND DOWNS BUT THE RARAWAI MILL STOOD THERE SERVING THE DEMANDS AND NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE. FARMERS AND MILL WORKERS HAVE COME AND GONE BUT THE HISTORY OF SUGAR INDUSTRY IN BA AND THE MILL STAYS REFLECTING ON THE YEARS AND DECADES GONE BY. THE MIGRATION AND INTERNAL RELOCATION TO THE CENTRAL DIVISION AND THE LAND LEASE ISSUES OBVIOUSLY HAD AN IMPACT ON THE CANE PRODUCTION IN THE BA AREA AT LARGE. TO THE VISITORS IT MAY BE JUST A SUGAR MILL BUT TO THE PAST AND PRESENT RESIDENTS OF BA, IT MAY BE A MAJOR LANDMARK WITH WHICH PEOPLE MAY RELATE THEMSELVES. https://hif.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rarawai_(Ba)_Mill
