A PERSPECTIVE By Arun Maharaj—Hayward California
Peace and Positive Emotion We live in a life of competition, to better our lives, in terms of practical point of view, something that will give us physical satisfaction. This is a common characteristic of human beings to look for physical satisfaction but whether this gives peace to us is a concept that is generally ignored. Being practical in this competitive world is acceptable as this will lead us to achieve our goals in life, that will provide us immense satisfaction with wealth, fame and whatever but the happiness may be limited to material things only. Material acquisition is sometimes temporary even though you may have to spend your life acquiring it. As migrants our thoughts, may have unintentionally, changed over things, particularly relationships, as we may be looking at life from a practical point of view as we try to blend with a lifestyle which may be completely alien to some of us. In doing so we may become practical only and this may affect our relationships with whom we were close to, back in our former home. Peace is attained by having positive emotion which is a rare quality found in us, some have more and some have less. Even by being practical in our daily lives we can always have some emotions connected with it. Positive emotion is an ingredient of a happy life! Back in our former home Fiji, we may have been more emotional as we looked at things from a different perspective. It is generally believed that things that are material are not the real things, they will not get us closer to peace but may give us temporary happiness because we can physically see the objects. Peace is something that can only be felt within us and can not be seen and can never be bought like material things. 1

PEOPLE The Glory Days of Late Chandra Sen Singh formerly of Qaloa, Navua Fiji Late Chandra Sen Singh, the eldest of the three brothers of a prominent Singh family of Qaloa Navua had a prosperous life up to the seventies. Born in Navua to a wealthy business family Mr. Singh took up the reigns of his family business at an early age upon the death of his father. It was a ancestral business started by his grandfather his shop ra Sen Singh in and later controlled by Late Mr. Chand y eighties... during the earl his father. During Mr. Singh’s business days he was running a timber mill; a grocery shop and a fleet of trucks. The period was highly glorifying for him and his brothers who were part of the family business. His shop in Qaloa village was a center for many travelers passing by on the then Queens Road and even the busses traveling from Suva to Lautoka and the local Suva—Navua busses stopped there for breaks for the passengers. In those days it was highly tiring for people to travel long distances on gravel roads. No one has control over one’s fate and destiny and Mr. Singh lost his younger brother, in the mid seventies, who was controlling the shop. He along with the other brother downsized the business and in early eighties he lost the other brother too. He further reduced his business operation and only kept the grocery shop which he controlled with the help of his wife, mother and his children. Life had more sorrow in store for him as in 1986 he passed away at the age of fifty years, leaving his business, wife and children, mother and the brothers’ families. Today Mr. Singh’s family resides in USA along with the other two brothers’ families.

FEATURE ARTICLE Fiji Community in America and Abroad
Language is the Basis of a Culture... A social issue based on, language and its impact on culture, debated time and again in social and religious gatherings here in America has not come to any concrete solution. People seem to agree on the importance of their mother—tongue to their culture and future but do not put it into practice. The first few years of a child’s life is highly instrumental to the child’s future which is built upon it. What a child hears from the parents in the very early stage of its life is what the child will speak. That is why it is called the mother—tongue. In Fiji the Fijians and the Indians and others generally speak their own languages at home. English is spoken in schools and when the children grow up they do well in life in their fields of work. It is highly important for the Fiji community to speak its mother— tongue at their homes here in America and abroad to ensure a safe and meaningful future particularly for the children. Language is the basis of a culture. To follow and live in a culture language is a must or else the values of a culture may not be understood fully. It is also believed people express themselves best in their own languages. At a religious gathering of Fiji Indians here recently, a man said to his daughter in English, “Did you hear what the priest just said?” The daughter proudly replied, “I do not understand Hindi”. I felt pity on the father and daughter both as they were not aware of the importance of their language. This is my personal opinion as an educator and advocate of the importance of a language to a culture and any disagreements may be entirely yours and I will not entertain any further adverse comments and or discussions based on the issue.
