A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Cathedral’s Vision Statement reads, “Cathedral will be the Catholic high school of the future, providing the best possible education for the individual student with a firm foundation in Holy Cross values.” With this Vision at the forefront, and after years of planning, Cathedral boldly embarked on the construction of the new Innovation Center in 2020 in the middle of a pandemic. Although most of the world was in a state of pause, we knew that forging ahead with new academic space that would benefit our students was the right thing to do. The Innovation Center was completed at the beginning of this academic year and it truly has exceeded everyone’s expectations. The Innovation Center is a beautiful new addition that serves our students in many capacities. The lower level houses our new dining hall. It is spacious, open, and provides our students with new meal options as well as more space for them to interact with one another and form those strong bonds that are at the heart of our Cathedral community. It is filled with natural light and connects both to the outdoors for seating as well as the Student Life Center. The next two levels are where our new science lab, engineering, and entrepreneurship classrooms are located. These disciplines now have the space they need to help our students learn and create in a world that is rapidly changing, innovating, and adapting to new circumstances. Another bonus to this space is the spectacular view it provides of our campus, as seen through the exterior wall of glass. However, perhaps the most stunning feature of the Innovation Center

is the large lighted art display of Mary with her outstretched hands hovering over our beautiful campus. The area directly below Mary has become a popular gathering spot for students, faculty, and staff with the couches, chairs, and tables always full. This depiction of Mary has come to be known around campus as Our Lady of the Hill and it is comforting that all who pass by her are reminded of her constant and abiding presence and protection in their lives. This space is literally Auspice Maria – Latin for ‘Under the Protection of Mary.’ As with everything that happens at Cathedral, nothing is possible without the generous support of so many of you. Thank you to everyone who donated to or was in any way a part of making the Innovation Center a reality for our students. We are grateful for your support of this incredible project and your help in aiding Cathedral in its vision of being the Catholic high school of the future!

God Bless You and Your Family,

A M E S S A G E F R O M T H E P R I N C I PA L “With eyes of faith consider the greatness of your mission and the wonderful amount of good which you can accomplish.” -Blessed Basil Moreau That is exactly what took place this first semester. We came back to the Hill with eyes of faith and accomplished a tremendous amount of good. The number one accomplishment was being back on the Hill together as a family. I recently completed an interview with the Cathedral newspaper and was asked to reflect on the first semester. There’s so much to be grateful for this year. As well as being together as a family, we were able to host in-person senior retreats. I am sure those retreats will transform our seniors, and they will cherish those memories for the rest of their lives. We were also able to host live band concerts, choir concerts, and theater productions. What a blessing to be able to see and hear the talents of our Cathedral students. We have also celebrated masses as a school, which we missed dearly. The Fighting Irish football team, with its 45 seniors, won back-to-back state championships. What an incredible accomplishment! Our two passionate Leprechauns unified our school with the most school spirit we’ve had in years and helped us win the Zone 8 banner and be named the best student section in the

state of Indiana. In addition, IndyStar readers voted us Best Private School in the area for the second year in a row. Many schools would be grateful to have any one of those recognitions, and we have them all. I am very proud of our students and educators and what we accomplished fall semester. And you can bet we are poised to “accomplish more good” second semester. I want to close by acknowledging the main reason for the great success we had fall semester: our educators. Our dedicated educators come to the Hill each and every day, ready and willing to build relationships with our students. Our success comes directly from these amazing educators who teach, coach, counsel, and do so much more to help us achieve our mission of transforming our students and educating hearts and minds. Blessings,

Julie Barthel, Principal Cathedral High School

its glory thanks to Andrew Christiansen ’99 (Turfdogs Lawn & Landscape), which is a favorite gathering space for our students. The final element of the renovation will be furniture added to the Cross and Anchor Patio presented by Family Leisure, which will be installed later this winter. “Our new Innovation Center has been a “value-added” space for our community,” said Cathedral President Rob Bridges. “We knew it would provide state-of-theart teaching and learning spaces, such as the Shelton Machinery Engineering Lab and the Drs. Connie and Domingo Lee Biology Lab. It also provides dynamic new gathering spaces, which are used every hour of every day. The college-style dining hall is teeming with activity all day, and the Our Lady of the Hill area is beautifully busy all day as well. I believe the students feel Our Lady’s presence in a tangible way. If a 10 rating is the best I could have imagined, I would say that the Innovation Center is a 12!” In early September, biology, chemistry, physics, entrepreneurship, and robotics classes began meeting in the new classrooms. Cathedral computer science educator Ria Pereira said, “The space has provided for an organized and professional engineering feel!”

FULFILLING OUR VISION to be the Catholic High School of the Future

Innovation Center Opens September 2021 After three years of planning, 18 months of construction, more than 500 construction workers, and $13.5 million from hundreds of donors, the Innovation Center opened in September 2021. The Innovation Center, connected to Kelly Hall, includes more than 33,000 square feet of STEM classroom space, a new dining hall, and a 13,173 square foot building renovation consisting of a new Spirit Shop and severy. A breathtaking highlight to this beautiful new space is our Mary feature wall, which we call Our Lady on the Hill, designed by local artist Carl Leck (donated through the estate of Dennis R. Opal ’60). This gorgeous, two-story feature wall is backlit with 23,000 LED lights, envisioned by Dave McDowell ’74 (Techlite Corporation). The area near Our Lady on the Hill is a favorite gathering spot for students and educators before school, during the day, and after school. We are also pleased to have our courtyard greenspace returned to

Cathedral would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the hundreds of donors who made this dream a reality. None of this would have been possible without your generous support. We’d also like to thank CSO Architects, Envoy Construction, Old National Bank, and both the Cathedral Finance Committee and Facility Infrastructure Technology and Transportation (FITT) team for taking Cathedral’s vision and transforming it into the gorgeous modern space we have today. Cathedral hosted a Taste & See that coincided with Cathedral’s 103rd birthday. How fitting to toast Cathedral’s tradition of excellence while celebrating our bright future. Greatness is calling!

BRITTANY HIZER ’00 ANSWERED Alumna’s Company Revolutionizing Public Diaper Changing Tables

a quick cup of coffee in February 2020. Instead, their “quick” meeting turned into a five-hour meeting of the minds. “Addie, who was enjoying a career as a food product developer, cookbook author, and Food Network competitor had a horrible experience changing her son in a public restroom in 2018. She began thinking about the possibility of a modern and user-friendly changing table that sanitized itself. After two years of developing her idea and filing a patent, Addie needed a partner with product development and business management experience to help bring her vision to life. “After our meeting, it became clear that we would be perfect partners,” said Brittany. Pluie, which means ‘rain’ in French, continued to evolve as Brittany and Addie navigated the pandemic. The company launched in October of 2020, and the first Pluie was installed at the Angel Harvey Family Health Center of the Infant Welfare of Chicago in February of 2021. Since then, Pluie can be found in select restrooms nationwide, including in CVS, the Chicago White Sox’s Guaranteed Rate Stadium, Central Park’s Wollman Rink, and most recently, Conner Prairie in Fishers. Pluie will soon be installed in the Fashion Mall in Indianapolis and is already showcased in Cathedral’s Innovation Center.

A Pluie was installed in Cathedral’s Innovation Center in September 2021.

Brittany Hizer ‘00 had it all. She was the president of Crestliner Boats, a division of Brunswick Corporation. She had earned her bachelor’s degree from DePauw University, her M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, married a wonderful man, and had a healthy baby boy. Everything was going so well, yet Brittany felt it was time for a change.

“Having a Pluie installed in Cathedral’s Innovation Center was such a proud moment for me,” Brittany said. “I’d like to thank all of the Cathedral teachers, coaches, and classmates who have been so supportive of me the last year and a half.” Brittany looks forward to visiting Cathedral again and working with the Chris Beaty ‘00 Entrepreneurship Class. “I have so much pride in Cathedral,” Brittany said. “I love how the school kept the integrity of Kelly Hall while adding such a beautiful, innovative space.”

“I was commuting quite a bit from Chicago to Minnesota for my job, making it difficult to be the kind of mom I wanted to be to my son,” Brittany said. “Also, I had been with the Brunswick Corporation for 16 years, which is a long time, so I decided to resign and prioritize my family.” Brittany left her employer on excellent terms. As a matter of fact, her former Chief Marketing Officer introduced her to Addie Gundry. The rest, as they say, is history. Addie and Brittany met for what was supposed to be

As Brittany reflects on her time at Cathedral, she is grateful for her entire Cathedral experience, especially her religion classes. “The biggest takeaway for me was that it’ll be okay, even when it seems like it won’t be okay. Thanks to the lessons I was taught at Cathedral, I have learned to live a life of gratitude.” Brittany also learned the importance of lifelong connections at Cathedral. “Students should focus on fostering real relationships with people,” Brittany said. “My other advice would be, don’t burn bridges and always be kind. If people remember anything about you, they will remember your kindness.” Great advice from a Cathedral graduate/entrepreneur who is helping revolutionize public diaper changing tables. Pluie is the world’s first and only self-sanitizing diaper changing table for public restrooms, powered by a patented UV-C light system. UV-C light is known to kill 99.9% of germs including influenza, e. Coli, and coronavirus. The signature table’s modern design also includes first-to-market features such as a comfortable, leak proof cushion, a retractable security strap, and multipurpose stainless handles to hang a bag, backpack or purse. Pluie is made in the USA and was recently named a Fast Company’s 2021 World Changing Idea and was among TIME Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2021. Pluie is committed to Changing the Table™, modernizing the outdated public restroom changing table experience, and making sure all parents and caregivers on the go have a clean, safe, and comfortable place to change their baby’s diaper. “I’m not sure what the future holds but my hope is that Pluie becomes the preferred baby brand for families on the go,” said Brittany. “Leaving the corporate world and then starting a business was a big risk but has been such a blessing. I trusted my decision and now tell others to

feel comfortable being uncomfortable. I changed my major in college. I didn’t know what I was going to be. Trust is huge. Trust that everything will work out okay.” Everything certainly worked out better than okay for Brittany and Cathedral could not be prouder!

ALUMNUS HELPS BUILD CATHEDRAL’S FUTURE Envoy Inc. Constructs Innovation Center – John Barbee ‘94, Envoy President/COO

“I didn’t think I wanted to go into construction when I was a Cathedral student,” said John Barbee ‘94. “When I graduated from Cathedral, I enrolled at Purdue University with plans to study engineering. Those plans changed, however, when I realized I didn’t want to design buildings. Instead, I wanted to build them.” John’s construction and problem-solving skills landed him at Envoy, Inc., a construction, development, real estate, and property management firm in 2004. He has served as the President and Chief Operating Officer for nearly 14 years. Envoy has managed more than $1 billion in construction projects in both the private sector and schools. And John says winning the bid to build the Innovation Center at Cathedral was pretty special. “This project was definitely personal for me,” John said. “I never imagined I would return to my alma mater and be a part of something like this.” John’s wife, Katie Hasbrook ‘95 Barbee agrees. “It’s a blessing for our family to be able to give back to Cathedral this way”, Katie said. “Our family has a long Cathedral history

and knowing that our kids and their friends will benefit from the Innovation Center is an incredible feeling.” John and Katie’s daughter Hannah is a member of the class of 2023, their son Connor is in the class of 2024, and Quinn is in the 7th grade at St. Pius X. He’ll be in the Cathedral class of 2027. Katie says she loves all the windows and natural light in the Innovation Center. “I’ve always thought Loretto Hall is such a beautiful building, and the view of it from the Innovation Center is amazing,” she said. “I also love the Our Lady on the Hill feature wall. The feature wall was created by Carl Leck, a local artist, and my friend. I am in awe of his talent.”

“The entire building is spectacular,” said John. “It’s so impressive that the team was able to take something new and high tech and blend it so well with Kelly Hall. The credit really goes to the designer and inspiration provided by Cathedral’s leadership. It looks as though the Innovation Center has always been a part of the campus.” Construction projects are notorious for having hiccups and headaches, but John says the experience with Cathedral was positive from start to finish. “We never heard any grumbles during the process,” John said. “The entire Cathedral staff was wonderful. I am grateful for the support and appreciate this opportunity to give back.”

AWESOME SUMMER FOR CAMP CATHEDRAL Congratulations to Camp Cathedral on a phenomenal 2021 season! The Hill was alive with 44 enrichment camps, ranging from STEM and communication camps to art and imagination workshops. In addition, more than 30 sports camps were offered to represent 16 varsity teams. Camp Cathedral had nearly 1,300 campers who registered for about 1,800 camp openings, making last summer a huge success. However, even with those campers on the Hill, individual camps were limited, and counselors provided a safe, personable, and fun experience for each camper. That’s just one of the reasons Camp Cathedral is so popular! With 75 camp offerings, area students were able to grow, laugh, and learn at Cathedral.

12-year-old Emilio Pulido traveled from his home country of Columbia to Indianapolis in June of 2021 to attend Camp Cathedral. He attended Robotics and Minecraft Camp. Emilio and his mother were guests of Louis and Susan Dezelan. Louis is the nephew of “Papa Joe” Dezelan, Hon. ‘68, the legendary Cathedral Coach and Athletic Director. Emilio’s father, Juan, stayed with the Dezelan family as a foreign exchange student in 1992.

WELCOME CLASS OF 2025! The Class of 2025 has 288 students who come to Cathedral from 74 different grade schools. Cathedral’s entire student body of nearly 1,100 represents more than 150 different grade schools. Go Irish! The Class of 2025 represents Cathedral’s diversity in many areas, including educational level, geographical, racial, and religious diversity.

KAT H RY N K IR S C H NER ’ 25 “While attending Cathedral, I’ve found community, specifically in theatre, caring teachers, challenging classes, and a beautiful, college-like campus to be some of my favorite aspects. In hindsight, the drive is nothing compared to the strong academics and unique, welcoming atmosphere Cathedral has to offer.” (Kathyrn’s drive to school is roughly 25 minutes. The drive home is a bit longer due to traffic.)

GA B B Y H A D A D ’2 5 “Honors classes at Cathedral are challenging yet engaging. The teachers have exciting teaching styles, and have high expectations for their students. It’s an amazing environment in which to learn!”

PRESTON DUMAS ’ 25 “My overall experience at Cathedral has been spectacular! I’ve met students from across Indiana of different backgrounds and faiths. Also, I have enjoyed many clubs and activities. I’m currently in the band. I also participated in the fall play. In addition, I joined ASL (American Sign Language Club), Gospel Choir, and Robotics Club.”

HOLY CRO S S U P D AT E CATHEDRAL WELCOMES CHAPLAIN AND NEW CAMPUS MINISTER will continue to hold first place and will reign supreme at CHS, and His tangible and powerful presence will be felt by one and all in the CHS campus.” In addition to Father Emmanuel, Cathedral welcomed her new Campus Minister Dave Neeson this fall. Dave comes to Cathedral from St. Louis de Montfort Catholic School where he served as youth minister. Dave has kept busy leading senior retreats and Days of Recollection for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Dave was also a constant presence on the sidelines with the Fighting Irish football team and always makes himself available for students and families in crisis.

Cathedral is thrilled to have our school chaplain Father Emmanuel Babu Kallarackal on campus. Father Emmanuel is a Holy Cross Priest from India and was supposed to join us in the fall of 2020. Unfortunately, Covid delayed his arrival, but he has been quite busy now that he is finally at Cathedral! Father Emmanuel leads Mass every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 7:40 a.m. In addition, Cathedral friend Father Todd Riebe celebrates Mass each Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. Father Emmanuel also celebrates Mass at 11:15 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and offers special Masses for educators on their birthdays. For example, Father Emmanuel offered a Mass for Librarian Jenny Herron for her birthday in October. “What a glorious feeling to stand with my friends and celebrate the Holy Eucharist -- and my birthday -- in the quiet confines of Cathedral’s sweet chapel,” Jenny said. “Father Emmanuel raised my name during the Prayers of the Faithful, which I consider a true blessing. Regularly, when asked about the benefits of working at Cathedral, I share that the daily practice of my Catholic faith and vocation is number one. Father Emmanuel’s diligent and caring presence on campus truly has been worth the long wait for his arrival.” “I feel God calls me to help the Cathedral family (students, educators, staff, and families) to enhance its Catholicity and Holy Crossness and to experience the Eucharistic Lord Jesus so that they will lean on Him not only in moments of difficulties but also in moments of joy,” said Father Emmanuel. “I have a dream that God

“Cathedral has changed my idea of what high school education can be, “ Dave said. “Focusing on the whole person includes guiding their heart while educating their mind, and often the heart is overlooked in the academic world of high school, but not here on the Hill. The educators have constantly amazed me with their genuine love for each student they serve and their genuine concern for their families outside of school. I’ve witnessed countless examples of educators going out of their way to help guide the students’ path entrusted to us here at Cathedral, and I hope I can live up to those standards in my own example seen by others. I’ve really appreciated the support so far. I look forward to serving this school and our families in the future to the best of my ability!” Cathedral is so fortunate to have Father Emmanuel and Dave Neeson accompanying our students and educators on their faith journey. May God continue to bless them both as they have blessed our Cathedral family.

The exciting announcement was made during Cathedral’s Evening of Excellence. The award is named after the Bishop of Indianapolis when Cathedral opened her doors on September 13, 1918. Brother Roy’s Cathedral journey began in 1957. He was class vice president for four years and a star athlete. He excelled in football, basketball, and track. And he was as humble as he was talented. Brother

Roy turned down a four-year football scholarship to the University of Louisville, and instead enrolled at St. Edward’s University, a Holy Cross university in Austin, Texas, to study History and English. He’s been a social worker, a civil rights champion, and is currently the development director for the Midwest Province of Holy Cross. He has also served faithfully on Cathedral’s Board of Directors since 2005. Thank you, Brother Roy for being a perfect example of everything we want our Cathedral graduates to be!

A Message from the President

C AT H E D R A L’ S F I V E - Y E A R S T R AT E G I C P L A N

There are many marks of an excellent organization; great employees, a clear and strong mission, and healthy support from the community. We strongly believe in all these things, of course, but I also know that having a vibrant and bold strategic plan is a key mark of an excellent school. Since 2019, our leadership team has been working on a plan that will do more than keep us competitive in an uber-competitive school market. We desired a plan that would take Cathedral High School from a place of deep tradition to a school with both eyes on the future. Certainly, our rich history guides us and always will, but education as a whole has been forced to adjust to a society that is changing rapidly. Traditional teaching with the “stand and deliver” approach is, as the kids say, “so five minutes ago.” By creating larger, more flexible spaces to educate our students in, we are allowing our classroom educators to be bold and innovative in their approaches. Our fantastic new Innovation Center is a bold example of that, but it doesn’t end there. This plan, as you will see on the next few pages, encompasses how Greatness is Calling our school

community in the areas of the Arts, Academics, Student Life, Inclusivity and Diversity, Technology, Advancement, Marketing & Enrollment, Finance, Facilities, and Professional Development & Growth all under the umbrella of our Catholic, Holy Cross tradition and values, which are imbued in all we do. We say in our vision statement that we “will be the Catholic high school of the future,” and I believe this plan helps us fulfill that pledge. I want to thank our team captains who developed this plan, as well as the community and board members who joined them in this exciting work. Over the next five years we plan wholeheartedly to achieve each and every facet of this plan, with your support, of course. Finally, I can share with you what we share often with our students: we are grateful to God for the blessings that He has bestowed on our Irish community and we humbly and prudently continue to ask God to continue to bless our efforts as we strive for greatness in all we do. Go Irish!

5A STATE CHAMPIONS AGAIN! This was memorable, impressive, and thrilling. And while back-to-back state titles are always special, and while the 2021 Cathedral High School football team will be remembered as one of the best in the history of an historical program, Head Coach Bill Peebles ‘88 said something else was equally true. This took a season-long effort by all involved. “I didn’t think it was going to be easy – and it wasn’t, for sure,” Peebles said. The Irish, long one of Indiana’s top football programs, turned in one of the most impressive seasons in school history in 2021 – capping a remarkable two-season run with a 14-1 season that ended with a 34-14 victory over Zionsville in the Class 5A state title game at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 25. The Irish won the ‘20 Class 5A title, 46-28 over Zionsville.

“Through the regular season, I didn’t bring it up much at all,” Peebles said of the historical significance of repeating. “Once we hit the playoffs, I did bring it up at the very beginning. I told them, ‘You guys have a chance to do something that’s never been done before.’” The state title was the Irish’s 14th, the second-most in Indiana. The Irish won Class 3A state titles in 1986 and 1992; Class 4A titles in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012; and Class 5A titles in 2013, 2015, and 2020. “What these guys did not only in the playoffs but the regular season, I think, sets them apart,” Peebles said. “The last two years, we’ve played an amazing schedule, and our kids have done amazingly well. We’ve got a great group of kids who will go on to do great things. Some of them are going to play football, and some of them are just going to be really successful in life.” 28

Boys Cross Country

Strides were made in 2021 – significant ones. A young Cathedral High School boys cross-country team improved as the season continued during the fall of 2021, adjusting to a new coach – and some new approaches. Most importantly, a foundation was laid for the future. All of which meant Irish boys cross-country coach Jason Moyars – in his first season in the position after 22 seasons as an assistant – liked how he felt about a young, improving program when the ’21 season ended. “We got better as the year went on – we were more competitive,” Moyars said. The Irish, long one of the top cross-country programs in Central Indiana who lost seven of their top 12 runners from 2020 due to graduation, finished sixth in the 2021 Section 20 Meet with 147 points.

Girls Cross Country

This was a strong season, with one eye on the present and another on a bright future. If 2021 Cathedral High School girls cross country had a theme, that was it. The result was a strong finish to the season, which made the program’s second season under coach Allie Griffith successful and productive. “I love where this program is heading,” Griffith said. Irish girls cross country in ’21 not only finished second

in a rainy, memorable City Meet, they finished seventh in the Section 20 Meet with 149 points. Those were two of several strong performances late in a season in which Griffith said the Irish continued to embrace change and a new approach to the program.

Girls Golf

The future is bright for Cathedral High School girls golf. Glimpses of that future were seen in 2021, and Ryan Brammer, in his first season as the Irish’s girls golf coach, said the vision will only get brighter. The Irish fielded their largest program in recent memory in 2021, with 25 girls on various levels of teams – and with the Irish varsity winning the city title with a young, improving lineup that Brammer said should set a positive tone moving forward. The Irish for the season went 45-33 in 18-hole tournament play and 10-5 in nine-hole tournaments, with the junior varsity finishing 11-4 in nine-hole play. “We had a lot of success,” Brammer said. The Irish finished fourth in the Section 15 tournament at Maple Creek Golf Club on September 20 with a team score of 418. The top three teams, North Central (364), Heritage Christian (365), and Park Tudor (408), advanced to the sectional round. Tillie Browning ‘24 led Cathedral with a score of 94 at the sectional, with Allison Haug ‘23 scoring 103, Jacquie Piper ‘24 scoring 110, Olivia Schilder ‘22 scoring 111, and Millie Whitlock ‘24 scoring 123.

Boys Soccer

All in all, a lot of success – and a lot of good memories. As importantly, there was a lot of late-season improvement around Cathedral High School 2021 boys soccer. That made Joel Russell’s second season as coach successful. “It was a good year,” Russell said. It was a memorable one, too, with the Irish not only winning the Class 3A, Section 11 tournament, but also beating East Central 1-0 in a regional semifinal. The Irish finished one game from the Class 3A Final Four, losing the regional final 3-0 to No. 10-ranked Carmel at Carmel.

Girls Soccer This was one to remember, and one to savor. Cathedral High School girls soccer in 2021 turned in one of their better seasons in recent memory while not quite reaching the Irish’s lofty postseason goals. And they continued building on their status as one of Indiana’s top girls soccer programs. “The coaches were really just very pleased with how the season went,” Marc Behringer ’84 said. Behringer, Irish girls soccer coach for two-and-a-half decades, called the ’21 season one of the program’s “easiest” of his tenure. It wasn’t that the games or schedule was easy, just that the Irish were strikingly successful against what annually is one of the state’s toughest schedules. The Irish, who finished the season No. 2 in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association Class 2A rankings, finished the season 12-2-6. They beat Beech Grove (9-0) and Batesville (7-0) to win the Class 3A, Section 27 title. They then beat South Dearborn 4-0 in a regional semifinal before losing 2-0 to Brebeuf in the regional final. The Irish also won their seventh consecutive City Championship, beating Bishop Chatard by a score of 3-0 in the title game.

Signing Ceremony

Congratulations to the 14 scholar/ athletes who signed their letter of intent to continue their academic and athletic career at the collegiate level!

The Irish, who finished the 2021 regular season ranked No. 21 in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association rankings, swept Heritage Christian without losing a set to win the City Tournament. They then lost in the Section 48 semifinal to sectional champion North Central 4-1. Giles called winning the city “awesome.” “They went 15 for 15 without losing a set,” Giles said.

Girls Volleyball The progress continues, and so does the building. That was the theme for Cathedral High School girls volleyball in 2021 – a season in which the Irish again navigated one of the state’s toughest schedules on the way to a solid showing in the postseason. That didn’t necessarily mean a satisfying season in Mary Ording ‘09 Hemer’s third season as coach. It did mean a successful one. “In all positions around the court we made huge progress,” Hemer said. Pictured Front row (pictured left to right) Zeke Seltzer ’22 - Wrestling - University of Missouri, Owen Wood ’22 - Football Indiana State University, Reese Sanders ’22 - Track and Field - University of Notre Dame, Alexander Wright ’22 - Baseball - George Washington University, Dylan Haslett ’22 - Baseball - Oakland University, Julia Jennings ’22 - Softball - College of Wooster, Samantha Klug ’22 - Swimming and Diving - University of Findlay Pictured Back row (pictured left to right) Beau Howard ’22 - Lacrosse - University of Indianapolis, Reid Betner ’22 - Lacrosse Merrimack College, Ryan Ford ’22 - Golf - University of Cincinnati, Kevin Kerutich ’22 - Lacrosse - Bryant University, Nick Bassi ’22 - Baseball - St. Charles Community College, Tayshawn Comer ’22 - Basketball - Eastern Kentucky University, Jaxon Edwards ’22 - Basketball - Murray State University

Boys Tennis

This was a good start. A solid foundation was laid for Cathedral High School boys tennis in 2021, which was one of the objectives in Jeff Giles’ first season as head coach. Overcoming adversity and injury, and with a young team gaining valuable experience, Irish boys tennis – long one of Central Indiana’s top programs – spent the ’21 season ranked among Indiana’s top high school boys tennis programs. They capped the season with yet another city title.

The Irish, long one of the state’s top high school girls volleyball programs, finished 20-13 in 2021 against a schedule that featured some of Indiana’s top programs. The Irish also turned in a methodical, impressive performance en route to the City Title and won the Class 4A, Section 10 title for a third consecutive season. They swept through the sectional tournament without losing a set, beating Warren Central (first round), North Central (semifinal), and New Palestine (title match). The Irish beat Heritage Christian and Bishop Chatard to win the City Title. “We were on a mission, and it was awesome to see the girls that focused and that determined throughout the match,” Hemer said of the city title. Another season highlight: A 3-2 victory over Center Grove, with the Irish rallying from a 2-0 deficit. “The steps the girls have taken and the progress our returners had was obvious, which is great,” Hemer said. “It was measurable. Every position grew a ton. We improved as the season went on, which is always what you’re looking for.”

“Overall, despite some early-season challenges, we ended up having a great season,” Giles said. For a complete wrap up of each sport, go to

You’re probably closer to achieving it than you might think.” A couple of weeks later, Joe spoke to Eric Brun’s sports history and culture class. Joe’s advice to the students was: “Be a yes person, do your research, and trust your gut.” Cathedral High School has a 100-plus year tradition of excellence, and Cole and Joe certainly exemplify that excellence in their respective sports. We are thrilled about their success and pray that God continues to bless them in all that they do.

Ask his friends and Cathedral classmates and they’ll tell you Frank Weber ‘41 did a lot of good things in a very quiet way. After graduating from Cathedral in 1941, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He later studied at the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated with honors in 1950. He married the love of his life, Mary Jane Dwyer, and together they raised five children. Frank Weber was a Holy Spirit Catholic Church member, Knights of Columbus Fatima Council, and Notre Dame Indianapolis Club. In addition, he was the Vice President of Marketing for Interstate Foundry, working there for 41 years. Frank’s reputation in the business and his relationship with the union workforce were a distinct source of pride for him. He was a devout Catholic and believed deeply in the value of his Catholic upbringing. While living in the old St. Philip Neri neighborhood, he donated his time weekly and was well known and loved for his Bingo calling. He attended the Stations of the Cross every year without fail until his health deteriorated in 2015. He also sincerely believed in Cathedral High School, supporting her until his passing in 2016. Rest in peace, dear and faithful servant. Your legacy lives on in all who knew and loved you.

IN MEMORIAM

HONORING A C AT H E D R A L L E G E N D JIM OBERGFELL, HON. ’92 DECEMBER 26, 1950 – JULY 14, 2021 Jim Obergfell, Hon.’92, beloved former Cathedral educator and a member of our inaugural Circle of Excellence class, passed away on July 14, 2021. In the words of his daughter, Anna Obergfell ‘02 Kirkman, “Jim Obergfell was an incredible human. He was a loving father, teacher, friend, brother, and grandfather. He passed away today after an acute heart attack Monday night, followed by a brief hospitalization. His body physically endured so much over the past decade, and he is resting peacefully now. For those who had him at Cathedral High School, you know he taught us all so much about death and dying. It was one of his favorite topics, and he created a safe space for others to learn about and experience grief and love and loss. He had an immeasurable impact on so many people at such a crucial time in their lives.”
