“Near is the day, near is the day of the Lord.” – Ezekial 30:3
As we celebrate Christmas and all of the joy that goes along with the birth of Baby Jesus, we also await the new year and the expectations we have for 2020. “Twenty-twenty” has such a nice ring to it; it sounds like a new time, a new era, and indeed a new decade. Here at our beloved Cathedral High School, 2020 comes with much hope and some newness. For starters, we will have a new principal to serve our students and educators. For 17 1/2 years, Dave Worland has served in this role and has steered our ship bravely and faithfully. The job of principal is one of the busiest and most demanding positions I know. I know this personally, having been a principal twice for ten years. A high school principal is always on call, as the life of teenagers never stops. A principal is expected to be ready at all times to assist students, teachers, and parents with issues and challenges, and to do so with faithful grace. I am describing an ideal principal, which Dave Worland has been. As we search for and discern who our next principal will be, I ask you to join me in showing our gratitude for Dave’s tireless and always kind approach to his vital role here on the hill. Dave will now take his talents just down the hall as a member of our Advancement Team, with a well-earned title of Senior VP for Mission and Advancement. So, if you see his name on your caller ID, please answer the call and wish Dave well is his new role! We also wish Dennis Thomas well in his new role as Principal of Shortridge High School here in Indianapolis. Dennis has been a stalwart for us in promoting student engagement in the classrooms, and modeling Holy Cross values in our hallways. These gifts and passions will serve him well in his new position. Cathedral is blessed to be the home of scores of talented educators, and we are semi-glad to share these educators with our greater Indianapolis school community. We will miss Dennis, but the Shortridge community is in good hands. This dual-position transition is a challenge and an opportunity for us, and I know we will grow and be even better once we have our new leaders in place. We need to be, as 2020 will bring us continued planning and execution of our Innovation Center (more details to come in January!), and a continuation of our strategic plans to become the model Catholic school of the future. 2020 will also bring us another outstanding graduating class in May-the class of 2020! We will also spend some valuable time in June to develop a new five-year Strategic Plan based on our vision statement as the Catholic School of the Future. In essence, the future is now as we are 20% of the way through this century. I am very confident that Cathedral will continue to lead the way as the school that sets the standard in so many ways. Finally, I want to thank you and all of our benefactors as we welcome a new year. 2019 brought us unique challenges from which we continue to learn and grow. As Jesus comes to us once again this Christmas, I promise each of you that we will stay united with Jesus and strive each day to serve our students in the most Christ-like way possible. There is no other way for us to be. I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. -John, 14:6.
Peace and joy to you,
Robert A. Bridges, PhD President

CATHEDRAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Cathedral Closing in on
Centennial Campaign Goal “This is something Cathedral has needed for a long time and the time is right.”
Cathedral High School is in the final push of her Centennial Campaign. The original goal was $20 million. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of more than $20 million in commitments, Cathedral announced a stretch goal of $25 million. Through the Centennial Campaign, we have invested more than $9 million for the endowment initiatives of tuition assistance to assure aide will be available for any deserving student for generations to come. Also, to ensure funds are in place for Cathedral to continue to recruit, retain, and reward exceptional educators. We have also been able to complete phase one improvements to Brunette Park, which include upgrades to the baseball field, softball field, and cross-country course. “This is an exciting time in Cathedral’s history as we are very close to reaching $25 million,” says Nicole Farrell ‘98 Beasley, Executive Vice President for Advancement. “There continues to be a need for cash and pledges for the construction of the Innovation Center.” The Innovation Center is a symbol of what is to come and a marker of Cathedral’s academic preeminence in Indianapolis. This premier facility will push Cathedral to the forefront of education with a space that not only promotes interdisciplinary learning and exploration but also enhances our academic approach to science and innovation to captivate our students. The hope is to break ground in the spring of 2020. The location of the Innovation Center has evolved from earlier designs. “The Innovation Center was moved to better align with our math, science, and STEM classes in Kelly Hall,” says Chief Operating Officer, Rolly Landeros. “This change will also allow a new entrance and a centrally-located cafeteria. It will also provide our academic classes more flexibility and space than the first design near the Student Life Center.” For more information on the Innovation Center and how you can contribute towards the propelling the project forward, please contact Nicole Farrell ‘98 Beasley, Executive Vice President for Advancement at nbeasley@gocathedral.com or 317.968.7383. Cathedral High School was honored to host more than 500 people at her first Evening of Excellence. The night combined our annual Cathedral Fund Dinner with the induction of our inaugural Circle of Excellence class. The Cathedral Fund is what differentiates Cathedral from other high schools. Donations allow Cathedral to continue to commit significantly towards tuition assistance, remain invested in exceptional educators, and support excellence both in and out of the classroom. Thanks to the generosity of our phenomenal community, we raised $669,306 during the Evening of Excellence. Thank you to everyone who donated to support Cathedral and her mission to transform a diverse group of students spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. • Bishop Joseph Chartrand (Father Pat Beidelman ‘90 accepted on his behalf.)

Family Goes the Extra Mile for a
Cathedral Education It’s not uncommon for parents to make sacrifices so their children can attend the best school possible. The Arce-Ramirez family, however, is going the distance to ensure their children have the best Catholic high school experience Indiana has to offer. The family lives in Columbus and makes two trips to Cathedral each day for Ana Christina ’21 and Octavio (Tavo)’22. The family averages about 1,100 miles a week, and approximately 45,000 miles a year to attend Cathedral.
also had to coordinate job schedules, plus school and extracurricular activities. Traffic and weather conditions can have a considerable impact on a commute. Even with all those considerations, the Arce-Ramirez family says they made the right choice to enroll their two oldest children at Cathedral. “For us, knowing that Cathedral offers an environment where we can see our children happy and challenged is important. Also, at Cathedral, students are known by name. They are not just a number. High school is the last foundation in their education before they go away to college, and it is important for us that they are well prepared.” Ana Christina and Tavo are very involved at Cathedral, which can make for some early morning drives and late nights getting home. Those long days aren’t always easy, but Ana Christina says she loves attending Cathedral. For one thing, she appreciates the beautiful campus and the fact she can walk outside to get to some of her classes. “Another thing I love about Cathedral is the opportunities it has offered me,” says Ana Christina.
Ana Christina Arce-Ramirez ’21 (seated, left) and Octavio (Tavo) Arce ’22 (standing, second from right) appreciate the sacrifices their family has made to send them to Cathedral High School.
“We heard about Cathedral from another family in Columbus,” says Claudia Ramirez. “Their two kids also attended St. Bartholomew (in Columbus) and Cathedral. They encouraged us to visit CHS.” Ramirez says she and her family visited Cathedral’s website and liked what they saw: the academic programs, IB diploma, student life, and the core values of the school. “We liked the fact that Cathedral offers a well-rounded program that includes the personal and spiritual growth of the students.” As much as Ramirez and her family loved Cathedral, there was much to consider. The family still has two smaller children who attend St. Bartholomew. They 8

“Thanks to Cathedral, I have joined numerous clubs/ groups/teams, I have participated and spoken at assemblies, I have taken classes that I enjoy and have done well in, and I’ve even gone on my first mission trip. I never knew I would be in a show choir, or that I would be on a Speech and Debate Team, or that I would join an American Sign Language Club. I would never have even guessed that I would be able to sing at the Vatican!” “The thing I love most about Cathedral is how its values are similar to mine,” says Tavo. “The commute isn’t too bad because I can either sleep or do homework in the car.” The Arce-Ramirez family says they know some people might think they’re crazy for enrolling their children in a high school so far from home, but they’re convinced Cathedral is the best option for their children.
“We can’t see them at any school other than Cathedral.”

Alumna’s Unexpected Path Leads Her Back to Catholic Schools Sarah Jean Watson ‘97 did not know what she wanted to do with her life when she was in high school. She was pretty sure, however, that she wouldn’t be going into the education field. “I was an average student,” says Watson, “and I wasn’t always the best behaved. After Cathedral, I enrolled at Purdue University, but I had no idea what I wanted to do.” Watson may have been an average student at Cathedral, but she thrived at Purdue. She graduated in just three years with a triple major in Special Education, Social Studies, and Psychology. Shortly after earning her degree, she landed a job teaching fifth grade at St. Gabriel. “My parents sacrificed so that my siblings and I could attend Catholic schools, so I decided I should give five years back to Catholic education.” It was during her fourth year at St. Gabriel that the pastor told her she would be the school’s new acting principal. “The principal at the time left mid-year, so I was tapped to be the acting principal,” says Watson. “While I was serving as acting principal, I went back to school to earn my Masters in Education.” It was clear Watson’s five- year plan was developing into God’s plan for her life. Watson served as principal at St. Gabriel for four years. She was the principal at St. Michael’ s-St. Gabriel’s for five years and has been the principal at St. Lawrence Catholic School since 2015. “I did not realize the gift of my Cathedral education until many years after I graduated,” says Watson. “Each year I was at Cathedral, I had at least two teachers who truly got to know me. Now that I’m in education, I make it a point to build relationships with my students,” says Watson. In addition to exemplary teachers, Cathedral’s Campus Minister, Charlene Witka, continues to be Watson’s spiritual companion. “Charlene Witka has been my spiritual advisor since I was 15 years old. We still meet often, and I am so grateful for her friendship.” Watson has received numerous awards in Catholic education. Last year, the National Catholic Educational Association honored her with a 2019 “Lead, Learn, Proclaim Award” for her dedication and commitment to excellence in Catholic education. “I was very humbled by the award, an honor I could not have received without the excellent staff I work with day in and day out.” Watson says 50% of her students at St. Lawrence are not Catholic, but she enjoys talking to them about faith and celebrating the Eucharist with the St. Lawrence family. “There is such a beautiful feeling in coming together as a community and celebrating the Eucharist,” says Watson. Each year Watson has been at St. Lawrence, students, parents, and faculty members have joined the Catholic church. Sarah Jean Watson is well known for making school fun for her students and staff at St. Lawrence Catholic School.
“As a Catholic school, our goal is to get every student to heaven. We are an extension of the home. Parents are the primary teachers of their children, and Catholic schools help parents in the formation of body and soul.
No doubt Sarah Jean Watson’s family was thrilled when she won the “Lead, Learn Proclaim Award.” Her siblings are Tina Watson ’92 Scheu, John Watson ’93 and Eileen Watson ’99. Her proud parents are Jack Watson ’65 and Susan Beck SAA ’66 Watson.
In addition to the faith component, Watson is proud of the tradition of excellence that is synonymous with Catholic schools. “I could not have graduated from Purdue in three years had it not been for my Cathedral education,” says Watson. “In Catholic schools, students get an opportunity to try so many different things. Teachers truly know their students, thereby giving students the confidence to find their niche,” says Watson. “Parents who send their children to Catholic schools should know their sacrifice is worth it. They are setting up their children for success in college and life.” Watson’s life journey has taken her places she never imagined, and she is so grateful. She loves her St. Lawrence community and her daughter, who she adopted from China when she was 14 years old. Her daughter is now a junior at Wake Forest University. “I may eventually get my doctorate and see where that takes me,” says Watson. “For now, I am thoroughly enjoying my work at St. Lawrence as we fulfill our essential role in growing the faith among our young people.” WWW.GOCATHEDRAL.COM 9

Uses Power of Words to Fight Hunger Rob Peoni ’04 never thought he would work in the nonprofit world. His English teachers at Cathedral High School were such an influence on him he set his sights on a journalism career. “All of my English teachers taught me the strength of great stories and the fact that words matter,” says Peoni. “I spent a lot of time in Mr. (John) Hannan’s classroom working on the newspaper while I was at Cathedral. I studied journalism in college, and I really wanted to go into print journalism as a career. Unfortunately, those jobs are few and far between these days. That said, I’m thrilled with where I landed in the nonprofit world, and I would like to think that Cathedral’s commitment to service played a role in finding this career.”
Rob Peoni ’04 (far right) poses with Culinary Job Training students at St. Joan of Arc’s French Market.
Peoni is in his fourth year as the communications and marketing manager at Second Helpings. “I love being a part of an organization that has a real impact in our community each day,” Peoni says. “I get to tell great stories about food rescue, hunger relief, and job training that furthers the work of more than 90 other nonprofits throughout central Indiana. It’s a pretty special place, and I feel very fortunate that I get the opportunity to shape the voice of this organization each day.” Peoni enjoys talking about his work, and also likes reminiscing about his days at Cathedral. “My fondest memory of Cathedral is the people. I still have strong relationships with many of my classmates and several of my teachers. The personal connections I made while attending Cathedral is what I value over anything else.” The value that Cathedral puts on service learning is something Peoni can’t stress enough. He believes service is critical to Cathedral’s curriculum. “It’s so important to instill the value of service in the next generation. We’re going to need younger volunteers to carry the torch and continue to prepare more than 4,000 meals in the Hunger Relief kitchen at Second Helpings each day.”
2019 FALL MISSION TRIP REFLECTION
BY: LILA WELCH ‘20
I still remember the day I walked into Mrs. Fox’s office, looking for ways to get my service hours done. I had heard great things about the mission trips in the past, but I never thought I would participate in one and even enjoy it. Mission Trips have made a very positive impact on my life, and this year’s fall mission trip was an experience I will never forget. When I found out we were going to Florida for the fall mission trip, I immediately signed up. It was starting to get cold in Indianapolis, so I thought it would be a great time to get some sun and also get service hours done with my friends. When the leaving day for the mission trip finally came, I was very excited and ready to go. After a 12-hour bus ride, we finally made it to Florida.
May God bless all of those who volunteered for this year’s Fall Mission Trip! 10
CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS • FALL/WINTER 2019
When we arrived, we were taken to our service site to work for the day. During the week, the place where I did most of my service was a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. While my group was at the ReStore, we sorted donated objects and decided whether they should be thrown away or put into the store where people could shop. After being at the ReStore for most of the day, everyone was exhausted. We all wanted to go back to the retreat center and go to sleep. Once we got to the retreat center, the unexpected happened. One of the boys in our group found bed bugs under his pillow. Chaos broke out!
IRISH UPDATES All of the kids on the trip freaked out and immediately wanted to go home. The chaperones decided we could no longer stay at the retreat center. The chaperones spent many hours trying to find a place for us to sleep, and in the beginning, there was little luck. Everyone was starting to think that we were going to go home. Then a miracle happened. When the chaperones were looking for places to stay, they contacted many hotels and other retreat centers, but none of them would take us. Finally, one hotel decided to take our group of almost 75 students. The hotel was La Quinta Inn, and when we arrived, it looked like renovations were underway. About a year ago, a major hurricane hit the panhandle of Florida and destroyed homes, stores, and even hotels. Even though crews were renovating the La Quinta, the staff still decided to make room for us to spend the night. Employees gave everyone blankets, pillows, and they even gave us the option to take a shower if we wanted to. Everyone was so grateful that we had a place to sleep that night, but we still worried about where we would stay for the rest of the trip. The next morning La Quinta staff told us they were going to clean up some of the rooms and allow us to stay in them. In my opinion, that act of kindness inspired everyone on the mission trip to work a little harder and appreciate everything we had. Even though we had a huge group and we did not have much money to give, the people of La Quinta still took us in and made us feel at home. From that point on, the rest of the trip was very fun. For the rest of the mission trip, I worked at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and made a lot of new memories with my peers. On the last two days of the mission trip, we got to go to the beach, and we also drove up to Seaside. This year’s fall mission trip is one I will never forget. We had some issues at the beginning, but in the end, all of the problems happened for a reason. It became apparent that everyone in our group was becoming more grateful for all of the opportunities and material things we have and receive. The mission trip was one of the most fun trips I have been on, and I would definitely recommend the fall mission trip to underclassmen.

The 2020 class of Riley Champions includes Sir Jonathan Thompson ‘22. Sir Jonathan will spend the next year serving as an ambassador for Riley Hospital for Children. Sir Jonathan was diagnosed with severe asthma when he was an infant. This chronic and unpredictable illness led to multiple hospitalizations, including time in Riley’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Sir Jonathan has learned to manage his condition, even while grappling with his father’s untimely death from cancer in 2018. Sir Jonathan’s doctors credit his hard work as the reason he’s avoided hospital stays for two years. Sir Jonathan was celebrated after Cathedral’s Day of Service. Representatives from Riley and Kroger were overwhelmed by the love and affection Cathedral students showed Sir Jonathan. They commented they had never seen anything quite like it!

At the annual convention of the Indiana High School Press Association at Franklin College, irishmegaphone.com was tabbed as the top student newspaper website in Division II (high schools with enrollments between 1,001 and 2,000). Out-of-state judges, most of whom are professional journalists or award-winning high school journalism teachers or college professors, evaluated websites that were entered into the association’s annual contest.

IRISH ATHLETICS
Streiff Inducted Into Butler Hall of Fame Rick Streiff Inducted Into Butler Hall of Fame Cathedral athletic director and former head football coach Rick Streiff has been inducted into the Butler Athletics Hall of Fame. Streiff served Cathedral as head football coach and social studies teacher before becoming the athletic director in July 2018. Streiff has compiled a 211-90 career record as a high school coach at Brebeuf Prep School, North Central High School and Cathedral High School. He has guided teams to a state record ten Indiana state championships. During his playing days at Butler, Streiff was a three-year starter and four-year varsity letterwinner at wide receiver. He finished his career with 58 receptions for 877 yards and 13 touchdowns. Streiff ranked second on the team in receiving yards in 1983, helping BU to a 9-0-1 regular season record which resulted in a Heartland Collegiate Conference Championship and Butler’s first berth into the NCAA Division II playoffs. Streiff was named Second Team All-Heartland Collegiate Conference in 1983 after scoring eight touchdowns. His football career would continue on the sidelines as one of the most successful high school football coaches in the state of Indiana.
Coach Low Receives Lifetime Achievement Award Coach Rhonda Low has received the first-ever Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Coach Low was also the first coach to earn the State Coach of the Year Award in 2016. She is the winningest boys volleyball coach in the state of Indiana with nearly 900 wins to her credit. She has also coached teams to nine state championships, the next highest is three.
Girls Volleyball In a real sense, Mary Ording ‘09 Hemer couldn’t have been happier. Cathedral High School volleyball accomplished much in her first season as the program’s head coach, and Hemer said she likes where the program is headed. The reason? A strong group of senior leaders who set the tone for the program’s future. “I could not have dreamt up a better group of girls, especially for my first season,” Hemer said. The Irish, eight-time Indiana state champions, won the Section 10, Class 4A title in 2019 and finished the season with a 16-13 record. They lost in a regional semifinal to New Castle, who entered that match ranked No. 1 in the state of Indiana in Class 4A and No. 1 nationally. Hemer, a 2009 Cathedral graduate, began the season wanting to begin reestablishing the program’s proud tradition. Mission accomplished in a memorable way.

football All in all, Bill Peebles was pleased. Cathedral High School, which entered the 2019 football season with major questions in multiple areas, had significant success in Peebles’ second season as head coach. The Irish won multiple big regular-season games and the team was acknowledged as one of Indiana’s best teams. That made the season memorable and a step in a positive direction. “Overall, it was a team-oriented year and it was a really good year,” Peebles said. The Irish finished 9-3 – their most regular-season victories in a decade – against one of the toughest schedules in the Midwest, finishing the regular season second in the state in Class 5A. BOYS TENNIS Cathedral High School boys tennis overcame a lot in 2019. The Irish during the 2019 season dealt with serious injuries while continuing to grow as a young team, and longtime Cathedral tennis coach Mark Noe said that made the season memorable and successful overall. “We’re getting better every year, and the boys are playing more,” Noe said. That improvement was seen vividly during a season in which the Irish finished 11-7 and ended the season with a competitive 5-0

loss to rival and state power North Central in the Sectional 48 tournament at North Central in early October. The Irish finished the regular season No. 19 in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association rankings, with highlight victories during the regular season over No. 4 Floyd Central, No. 15 Brebeuf and No. 19 Hamilton Southeastern.
“It was a quagmire of teams from No. 5 or so to No. 15 beating each other this season,” Noe said of Indiana tennis in 2019.
boys CROSS COUNTRY
girls CROSS COUNTRY
These are good times for Cathedral High School boys cross country. The present is strong, the future is bright, and Jim Nohl said he felt good about both as the 2019 season ended and the program looked forward.
This was absolutely a season to remember. That was how it was throughout the Cathedral High School girls cross-country 2019 season, and falling oh-so short of the final step didn’t change that.
“We’ll be there,” Nohl, the Irish’s boys cross-country coach, said following a season in which Cathedral narrowly missed a third consecutive team appearance in the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Cross-Country Meet. “We’ll be fine. Next year we should be there.” The Irish, a year after finishing as the state runners-up, negotiated a perennially difficult postseason path in 2019. They finished as runners-up at the sectional meet before a fifth-place regional finish, then missed the state meet by finishing seventh at a sloppy, soggy semi-state meet – one place shy of qualifying for the state meet.

“We kept getting better and better through the season,” Irish girls cross-country coach Mark Doctor said. The Irish, who finished the regular season seventh in the inccstats.com Indiana state rankings, turned in their best performance of the season with a second-place finish at the Regional 10 meet at Brebeuf Jesuit on October 19.

girls golf Cathedral High School girls golf moved forward in 2019. “Surprisingly so,” Eric Bruns said.
Bruns, in his second season as the Irish’s girls golf coach, said it was the best possible surprise – with a young, inexperienced team performing beyond preseason expectations to set a strong tone that should carry the program into the future. “The girls were all pleased with how everything turned out,” Bruns said. Natalie Schorr was the Irish’s lone returning senior, but Cathedral improved throughout the season and advanced through the sectional round for a 16th consecutive season. The Irish did so with comparatively little experience, with six of the nine golfers from the 2018 team graduating as seniors. In their place, Bruns said 17 golfers participated in 2019 – including a solid core of sophomores and freshmen who should form the core of the team in future seasons.
boys soccer Whitey Kapsalis continues to like Cathedral High School boys soccer’s direction. That remains a focus for the third-year head coach, and it was a priority throughout a 2019 season in which the team overcame early obstacles for a strong finish. The Irish’s ’19 season was in no way easy. But a strong finish has Kapsalis increasingly optimistic about what he considers a bright future. “We got it together and got rolling,” Kapsalis said.

The Irish had a season with what Kapsalis called a few “speed bumps along the way” in 2019, but finished with a 9-9-2 record with city and sectional titles. The season ended with a 3-2 loss to eventual Class 3A state-champion Zionsville in a regional semifinal at Carmel High School.

Marc Behringer couldn’t have been more pleased. Cathedral High School girls soccer remained strong in 2019, maintaining its longtime tradition as one of the state’s top programs. Falling just short in the postseason didn’t change that. “This group of seniors did their job,” Behringer, the Irish’s coach, said shortly after the ’19 season ended with a loss in the sectional tournament. “As far as continuing the level of expectations, the level of excellence, our tradition…this team did successfully continue that. “As far as the program is concerned, they did their part. Unfortunately, they just weren’t able to end on the note they would have liked.” The Irish, who in 2018 won the third state title in program history, in 2019 finished 7-7-2 and lost to Batesville, 0-0, on penalty kicks in a Class 2A, Section 27 semifinal WWW.GOCATHEDRAL.COM 21

Michael to consider a donation of fifteen hundred dollars for Cathedral’s Annual Fund. He quickly said yes. To put that gift in context, people simply did not donate money in the early 80’s like they do today; that was a large amount. Over time, Michael and his wife Mary continued to generously give to Cathedral, Little Flower, and many other Catholic charities. They also helped many students with various daily expenses that otherwise could not be met. Erin Tupman ‘16 earned the prestigious Fulbright Award. She will use her award to continue her research on Russian literature in Irkutsk, Siberia.
A Tribute to Michael Maio – 1938-2019
The Cathedral Legacy Cross
That same year I encouraged Michael to join the Board of Trustees and Bob Welch, the Board Chair, concurred. Eventually, Michael was named the board’s treasurer. His presence had an immediate impact on the school’s financial stability. In fact, with Michael’s leadership, we instituted a program of Prepaid Tuition, whereby families could be approved for a bank loan with no interest. In addition, the 56th Street mortgage loan from American Fletcher moved to Indiana National Bank (guaranteed by personal signatures - Michael Maio and other Board Members). American Fletcher Bank generously forgave several thousand dollars in accrued interest and Indiana National put Cathedral on a reasonable payment program. With these steps, Michael helped Cathedral operate more like a business and ensured the school’s future into the 21st Century. I was also fortunate to coach with Michael. He was an outstanding volunteer in that capacity as well. He helped Joe Mattingly and Joe Dezelan, Jr. on the varsity offensive and defensive lines. He also worked with Vince Lorenzano, Jim O’Hara, and Jim McLinn with the JV and freshman teams. As an example of his selfless mindset, he even drove our varsity team bus to games. This was the same person who simultaneously owned multiple successful businesses and served on the school’s Board of Trustees. While that is a unique combination of roles, Michael did them all without hesitation.
By: Michael McGinley ‘60 President of Cathedral High School 1979-1989 Head Football Coach 17 years
Michael was always fun to be around. His colorful stories about his life experiences were the highlight of many coaching staff meetings as well as our early morning meetings.
IN MY CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL
Michael was like no other. I can still hear him say, “I am just a phone call away if needed.” Michael Maio was often needed, and he always answered the call.
In my Cathedral High School office, there was a wall hanging that read, “If you want the work done, asks the busy man, the other kind has no time.” Michael Maio personified that statement. On multiple occasions, we would meet at 6:30 am to brainstorm about various Cathedral initiatives.
