A Message from Our President As we finally and officially turn the page on our centennial celebrations (whew!!), we look to the future. For the past three to four months, our school has been planning for the future in order to truly achieve our vision statement that says we will be “The Catholic School of the Future.” I would like to highlight a couple of special and unique areas of focus for us as we move into our second century. We are well aware that our beloved teenagers are truly hard-wired very differently from the way we were, and this has forced change upon us. At Cathedral High School, with the guiding precepts of our Holy Cross values, we are impelled to improve student well-being in the face of skyrocketing stress, anxiety, and other related student mental-health issues. We are coupling that with a shift in focus from what we teach to how children learn. This student-centered approach means in many cases letting go of tried and true teaching techniques in favor of new and innovative approaches. It should be noted here that there will always be a place, in my humble opinion, for outstanding, old-school ‘stand and deliver’ lectures. An outstanding lecture, well delivered, is still an effective teaching tool. It is just not the ONLY teaching tool. We are providing the environment for this new approach to learning to take place by rebuilding our Academic Leadership. Our new Academic Innovation Leadership Team, made up of nine outstanding educators, will model and direct a collaborative educator culture built on mutual trust and respect. Team members are: Lizabeth Bradshaw and Mark Matthews, Co-Directors of Arts and Humanities, Ashley Hill, Director of Holy Cross Integration, Shelbi Smeathers, Director of STEAM (STEM + Arts), Katie Klee and Howard Fogel, Co-Directors of Freshman Experience, Anne Katz, Director of Counseling, Lisa Ford, Director of Teacher Evaluation and Support, and Dennis Thomas, Academic Vice-Principal. This team, which will begin its work this summer, will lead, guide and support all of our educators as we strive to meet the ever-changing needs of our students. This is a new and innovative approach to teaching and learning in a high school, and we are leading the way in what I believe will be a wave of innovation that will follow our model. Our efforts to assist students with learning challenges has been a special programmatic calling of Cathedral for many years. In the past year and moving forward, we are going “all-in” in this area by revamping and ramping up the breadth and scope of work for our Learning Resource Center and Language Support Programs. Making Cathedral a place that truly meets the diverse needs of all of our students is something that many schools, including Catholic schools, struggle with for a variety of reasons. Our teaching team in the LRC and LSP have the skills required to provide an outstanding experience like never before.

By including our counseling staff in the new Academic Innovation Leadership Team, we are elevating our efforts to address and reduce student stress and anxiety. There is no doubt that this is a new and overwhelming issue in schools. Cathedral is positioned to again lead the way in these efforts. Our Counseling Office recently announced the addition of an extra counselor to our staff to help combat the wave of mental-health issues our students face. With a mindset focused on additional one-on-one interactions and in-class learning opportunities for our students, I believe that Cathedral High School will see our students realize improved student health and well-being. The importance of this area of our students’ lives cannot be understated. As we return to school in August, I can pledge that our students will see much of what has made our school so terrific for 100 years; many of our precious traditions will remain forever, I am sure. Students will also see many signs of the future. During the 201920 school year, we plan to “break ground” for our new Innovation Center, which will help transform the student experience on campus. Students will begin to participate in new and collaborative classes and other learning opportunities. The incorporation of these new ideas will be a vital part of our Strategic Planning sessions, which will begin in June. The future is indeed bright, exciting, and dynamic. Our first century has built a rock-solid base of greatness, and we plan to add to that base in century number two, with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ commanding the way. We owe it to our founder, Bishop Chartrand, who had the wisdom and foresight to adopt our motto in our very first year: Ipsa duce non Fatigaris: “With her leading, we will not tire.” We are not tired yet, and as long as we remember where we came from, we will remain strong. May God bless you and your families, and may He also continue to bless Cathedral High School for another 100 years!

Robert A. Bridges, Ph.D. President

Opening Prayer from Commencement 2019 Let us pray: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit Lord, we thank you for bringing us together in honor of the Class of 2019 and in celebration as we embark on the next chapter in our life’s journey. We gather in commemoration of scholars, athletes, and artists who comprise the graduating class. Thank you for blessing us with teachers who have guided each of us along this four year journey. Thank you for our parents, ready to catch us every time we fall. And thank you, Lord, for walking beside us and granting us the strength needed to meet every challenge we have faced. Though we often look back on our journey, we also look forward as the Class of 2019 travels miles apart. May we remain connected through our hearts, through our prayers, and through our home at Cathedral. After our success in high school, we must remember the words of 2 Corinthians 8:7: “Since you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge… see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” May we remember to listen for God’s call, for just as God has led us through our past, so too will our Lord walk with us through our future. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

A Message from Our Principal Dear Cathedral Alumni, Families, and Friends, As we end another productive and exciting school year, the hill is still full of energy and enthusiasm with the launch of Summer School and Camp Cathedral. Preparations for next school year are well underway, and we look forward to new developments of the Innovation Center that have strengthened our momentum to serve our generations of the future. As we continue to enhance the learning environment for our students, we also continue to strive to be the servant leaders that Jesus has called us to be. Our educators are filled with zeal to provide our students more opportunities and life skills that will support their future hopes and dreams. As we close out our 100th school year, we have had a wonderful opportunity to celebrate many memories in Cathedral’s history. This time of year is bittersweet as we’ve recently said a fond farewell to some of our Cathedral faculty and staff members who are moving on to new journeys in their lives. I want to recognize and thank the following individuals who brought many different gifts and talents to Cathedral. We sincerely thank them for their years of service and dedication and wish them the best!

centennial campaign update: Browning Gift Helps Cathedral Reach Campaign Goal

From left: Michael II, Kevin, Michael, Katie, Christian

Michael Browning and sons Michael Browning II and Christian Browning are donating $2.5 million to Cathedral High School. The family has been part of the Cathedral community since the late 1980s. Michael Browning II graduated from Cathedral in 1992, Christian Browning in 1993, and Michael Browning is a 2007 honorary graduate. The gift was announced during Cathedral High School’s inaugural All Out Irish Day of Giving, which is the culminating event of Cathedral’s Centennial Campaign - the school’s largest ever capital campaign. Thanks to the generosity of the Browning family, Cathedral has reached $24.6 million in her $25 million goal, and can now begin plans to break ground on the school’s new Innovation Center. “We are extremely grateful for the Browning’s donation,” says Cathedral President Rob Bridges. “Thanks to their gift, and the gifts of other incredible donors, we can move forward on what will be a marker of Cathedral’s academic preeminence in Indianapolis. The Innovation Center will push Cathedral to the forefront of education with a space that not only promotes interdisciplinary learning and exploration, but also enhances our academic approach to science and captivates our students.” The $2.5M pledge was fueled by the sale of tech start-up, MOBI Wireless Management, a provider of cloud-based managed mobility software. Michael II & Christian founded the company with Cathedral classmates, Scott Kraege & Tony Paris. “While we have been fortunate with success in the tech industry, we attribute much of the success of the company to the English skills we learned at Cathedral,” says Christian Browning. “You can’t win enterprise customer deals if you are unable to articulate a value proposition separating you from the competition. Melinda Bundy’s Honors English class was a monumental stepping stone for us.” Browning adds that of the 320 employees, they hired more English majors than Math majors. “English and coding are both important skills for our industry, but it goes without saying that we must have students who can read and write well.” “It’s gratifying to know that a family who attributes much of their success to Cathedral is now giving back to dear old Cathedral,” says Nicole Beasley, Vice President of Advancement. Michael Browning is a longtime supporter of Cathedral High School. In 2003, he was honored with the Bishop Chartrand Award, the highest award given by Cathedral. In addition to Christian and Michael II, Michael has three more children who graduated from Cathedral; Kevin, 1997, Jessica (Bush), 1995, and Katie (Jensen), 2000. Christian Browning currently serves as secretary of the Cathedral Board of Directors. To find out more about the vision and success of Cathedral’s capital campaign, visit cathedral100.com. LIFELONG CONNECTIONS

Farewell and Thank You! Cathedral Says Goodbye To Three Cathedral Legends We started the school year by celebrating Cathedral’s 100th Anniversary, and we’re ending the school year by celebrating three amazing educators who dedicated a combined 96 years of service to our beloved school. We asked Dr. Tom Greer, Hon. ’19, Kathy Keyes, and Jim McLinn ‘70 to share their favorite Cathedral memory and what they’re going to miss most about life on the hill. These three hard-working, dedicated, and loyal pillars of our community will certainly be missed more than they’ll ever know. All three of these outstanding educators have contributed to Cathedral being the school she is today. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank them for their service and ask God to bless them today and always.

LIFELONG CONNECTIONS difficult of all jobs. Dealing with students and their families in challenging circumstances is difficult, but in the end, if it is accomplished with all of the right reasons and intentions, it is the most rewarding of all the experiences. What are your favorite memories? There have been so many memories over the years. Daily interactions with students and their families, connecting with graduates, and being part of the Cathedral community have made my time at Cathedral a gift. On a personal note, one of my favorite Cathedral memories is having the opportunity to see all four of my children walk across the stage to receive their Cathedral diploma. I know what a difficult task it is to complete four years of working hard and achieving as they all did. Their foundational success was formed and modeled at Cathedral and is partially why they are great people today. It has also been a blessing to see my granddaughter start down the same path as a current student at Cathedral. What will you miss most about Cathedral? What I will miss the most are the Cathedral students. Every day for 30 years, I have driven up the hill thinking about the students with whom I was going to encounter that day. Students have always been the catalyst for my drive to be present to them and for them each day. Duplicating that joyful experience every day for 30 years was a gift. What is your hope/prayer for our students? Beyond health, happiness and future success, I pray that all students use their ability to serve others, not just with service hours, but with a servant’s heart. I pray they live the Holy Cross values and they become a Servant Leader forever.

Kathy Keyes – 21 years What positions have you held at Cathedral High School? I have been a classroom teacher for all my years at Cathedral. I have served as chair or co-chair of the English department as well. Additionally, I have worked as senior class moderator, Student Council moderator, Brain Game moderator, and Books and Bagels moderator. What role was your favorite? Asking me to choose a favorite class is like asking me to choose a favorite child. I have loved and have learned from them all. I am proud of my work as co-chair of the English department because it allowed me to work with the best teachers and human beings I know. What is your favorite Cathedral memory? So many... I love the image of the students walking down the hill when we used to have the Walk-a-Thon, the pageantry of the Irish 500, the blessing we offer to our guests, the passion of

students dressing up and hall decorating for Homecoming. My favorite memory, though, has to be that magical moment when a student comes to an understanding, sees something she hasn’t seen before, or simply says, “I love this book.” The moments in the classroom are sublime. What are you going to miss most about Cathedral? My students and my fellow teachers, both of whom inspire me and make me laugh every day. What is your hope/prayer for Cathedral students? I hope that Cathedral students will love learning and will surround themselves with books that will enrich their minds and their souls. I pray that they will be kind to one another.

Jim McLinn ’70 – 45 years What positions have you held at Cathedral High School? Teaching: English, Speech, Physical Education, Health & Safety, Driver Education Coaching: Football-Assistant, Wrestling-Assistant, BaseballAssistant, Boys Golf-Head Coach Positions: Peer Counseling Coordinator, Director of Guidance & Counseling, Director of Athletics, Director of Alumni Affairs, Director of Student Fundraiser, Director of Student Financial Aid, Vice President of Operations, Executive Vice President, Broadcaster- Fighting Irish Football Radio What role was your favorite? Coaching and counseling were my favorite jobs. What is your favorite Cathedral memory? My favorite memory is the Cathedral High School graduation of my two sons, Michael ’03 and Marty ’08. What are you going to miss most about Cathedral? The kids. I always tried to help a kid each day, and kids keep you young. What is your hope/prayer for Cathedral students? Irish Blessing May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sunshine warm your face, The rain fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

LIFELONG CONNECTIONS

Cathedral Dedicates the Cecilia M. Mimms ’77 Gymnasium On February 8, Cathedral High School proudly dedicated the Cecilia M. Mimms ‘77 Gymnasium. The celebration of naming the auxiliary gym in honor of Cecilia Mimms was a joyful occasion that included a reunion of friends, teammates, and classmates from the 1970s. Many of those at the dedication attended Ladywood/St. Agnes Academy with Mimms, and went on to graduate with her from Cathedral High School. Those who played basketball with or watched Mimms on the court, will tell you she was an amazing basketball player who was far ahead of her time. She led a history-making team that culminated in a 1975-76 season that included more than 70 consecutive wins for a three-year period, three city championships, and a unanimous #1 state ranking. Mimms averaged 16 points and 16 rebounds per game. She shot 44% from the field.

President Bridges congratulates Cecilia Mimms ’77.

The night of the dedication was one that Cecilia Mimms, her family, her friends, and her high school family won’t soon forget. As much as an honor it was for Mimms, she made it very clear that the night also belonged to her coach and her teammates. “I could not have accomplished everything that I did without my teammates,” says Mimms. “This is not about me. It’s about our team.”

“We were an incredible team,” says Michelle Harris ’76, “but we would not, we could not have been the team we were without Cecilia’s special brand of authenticity and intellect both on and off the court.”

“I could not have accomplished everything that I did without my teammates,” says Mimms. “This is not about me. It’s about our team.” Mimms’ high school coach, Mary (McMann) Hall says Mimms was nearly impossible to guard. “She had this turnaround, fade away jumper from the top of the key and it was amazing. If you tried to guard her, you’d foul her. It was incredible.” Mimms was named to the first Indianapolis All City-County girls basketball team in 1976, and went on to be named to the Indiana All-Star Team, and the Indianapolis and Metro All-Star Teams in 1977. She was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team in 2002, and was one of the first women inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.

Special thanks to the donors who made this wonderful tribute possible, Kathy Welsh ‘78, Mimms’ teammate, and her husband, Gary Loveman. We are so thankful for their generosity and their desire to celebrate a trailblazer in women’s athletics at Cathedral. “Out of respect for her ‘nothing but net’ step-back jump shot and her undiggable spike, and especially her leadership and service as a role model, we are honored to establish the Cecilia M. Mimms ’77 Gymnasium,” says Welsh. “I couldn’t be happier for my friend and teammate. She is extremely deserving of this recognition.”

In high school, Mimms earned 12 varsity letters as a fouryear winner in basketball, track, and volleyball. She went on to letter in basketball two years at Vincennes University and two years at Western Kentucky, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. Mimms is currently a coach at Northwest Middle School in Indianapolis. We were thrilled to be able to recognize Mimms during our Black History Program, which was held the day before the gym dedication. It was important for our students to learn more about the accomplished athlete behind the renaming of the auxiliary gym. With the naming of the gym, Mimms becomes the first woman and the first person of color to have a space named after her at Cathedral High School. 10

Class of 2019 Graduation

Commencement Speech by Valedictorians Samuel Kacius &Anabel Konesco, Class of 2019

Hello! As previously mentioned, we are Sammy and Anabel! In case you don’t know us, we went to high school together. We spent four years together up on the Hill, learning, laughing, and growing as a family. We personally could not be more thankful for our time together at Dear Old Cathedral. Even though we question how these four years flew by so quickly, despite the fact that everyone told us they would, they are past and we are left with the memories of our four years. Freshman year we drove up the Hill for the first time, nervous for the adventure that awaited us. We truly had no idea what we were doing. Our heads were churning with the questions “Who will I sit next to during lunch, where will I fit in, how in the world will I be able to navigate the winding hallways of this enormous school without walking into the wrong classroom?” But, somehow, we made it through that year. Sophomore year, we had learned, for the most part, where our classrooms were, but a new, rotating schedule left us with that unwavering fear of walking into the wrong classroom. We were learning, but we still had a long way to go, which was quite fitting as I’m sure we heard almost every day that year that the word “sophomore” actually means “wise fool.” Junior year was largely dominated by stress. Stress on behalf the counselors, who were praying we had at least thought about taking the SAT and ACT, and stress arising within ourselves as we realized we had hit the halfway mark of our time on the Hill. Just as we had begun to truly feel comfortable at our new home, just as we had finally learned where to go and when, it was time to start thinking about leaving. Now, Senior year has flown by far too quickly, as has our entire time at Cathedral. I’m sure many of us can remember how nervous we were on that first drive up the hill freshman year like it was yesterday, and now, I’m sure that many of us hold a similar nervous feeling driving down the hill for the last time, realizing that it’s time to move on to the next chapter of our lives. 18

However, we also need to realize something just as important... Did you realize... this past fall... Cathedral celebrated its 100 year anniversary?!? We’ve been pretty ...subtle... about it, I know. But seriously, if you stop and think about it, it’s quite an achievement, 100 years. 100 years of excellence and academics. 100 years of tradition. 100 years of Dear Old Cathedral. It’s certainly reason for celebration, but at the same time, the thought can be a bit daunting. After all, we are only one class in the 98 who came before us, in the 100 years of rich history that preceded our time. That’s a lot to live up to! What differentiates us, makes us stand out? What is our legacy? What made those four years count? Are we simply the class who first donned the dark blue lanyard? To answer this, I would like us to think back to a particular assembly, not one with Spirit Sticks or ventriloquists, but rather, one that took place before we even came to Cathedral. I’m talking about the one at the Open House our eighth grade year, when we were all preparing to start our journey here at Cathedral. I remember listening to Mr. Emery speak, and as he described our family up on the hill, one line in particular stood out to me; he said “the best friend you make here at Cathedral will, without fail, live on the opposite side of town as you.” Well, speaking from personal experience, he was right. Now, four years later, as we prepare to start a new journey, those best friends may live on the opposite side of the country as you. However, our parting ways is by no means an end. One of my favorite aspects of Cathedral is our idea of “Lifelong Connections,” the idea that we will carry on the bonds that we have formed on that hill throughout our entire lives. A similar sentiment is expressed in Alfred Tennyson’s poem “Ulysses,” part of which reads: “I am a part of all that I have met; Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough Gleams that untraveled world whose margin fades Forever and ever when I move.”

CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS • SPRING/SUMMER 2019

... That’s an interesting thought. We are a part of all that we have met. We impact each and every person we meet. We change them, and they change us. As we prepare to move into the next phase of our lives just through that arch, we have to remember that we do not do so alone. We are now all a part of one another, so when asking what our legacy is, it becomes clear that the legacy we leave is not just at Cathedral. It is carried on in each and every one of us and in everything we have done for one other. Our legacy is one of family, of love, and as we sang so many times, that love will hold us together both now and forever. The last line in the poem Ulysses states “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield”. And has Cathedral taught anything less? As we sit here in the caps and gowns we thought we would never put on, I challenge you to put into use the countless blessings Cathedral has given us over these past 4, beautiful years. Dear Old Cathedral has taught us to desire our own, unique greatness, no matter what that might be. To be relentlessly curious and unyielding in our quest for knowledge. To form our own opinions about the world around us, despite the ease in lying within the norm. To put others before ourselves. And most importantly, to always, always be kind. We truly are lucky to have such an incredibly family here at Cathedral, one that challenges us to grow in all aspects of our lives, and one which we will carry on forever. For as we go forth, we carry with us the memories, the laughs, the smiles, and the spirit we have gifted one another. This is our lifelong connection, our legacy, a legacy unlike any other in the 100 years of Cathedral. We cannot thank each and everyone of you enough, for all of you are a part of us and have made us who we are today, whether you cheered with us at a homecoming game, acted with me on stage, said hi to us in the hallway, or were that best friend all the way across town. You have all changed us, and we cannot wait to carry the Class of 2019 with us into that gleaming, untraveled world. Congratulations. We love you all.

Howard Fogel, chemistry teacher, student philanthropy coordinator, and freshman football coach, was chosen by the seniors to address the Class of 2019 at this year’s commencement ceremony. Chairman Cohoat, President Bridges, Principal Worland, honored guests and our graduates — I am very grateful to the Cathedral Irish Class of 2019 for affording me the honor of being the last teacher to address you prior to graduation. I hope my election was not influenced by my Russian family roots or because, growing up, I was a part of a Chicago democratic machine family. Also, for the record, there is no collusion between our football program and the girls’ lacrosse team. It is just a coincidence that Bo and Charlie took Meg and Victoria to prom… Here we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Indianapolis’s first catholic high school, built on the values of the Brothers of Holy Cross, dedicated to our Patron Saint Mary and you chose a Jewish teacher to speak to you. Really. To our parents and grandparents, thank you for trusting us with your children and with your children’s children. There are so many legacy families in this room today. Thank you for wanting your family to have a faith-based education. To our families celebrating with us for the first time, well as Father John reminded us in his final homily, “Keep your fork, the best is yet to come.”

We cried with those boys. We prayed with those boys. We cared for those boys. We were family.

At Cathedral, we love to use the word family. Because, family is the friends you hang out with, and the teachers and staff who treat you as if you truly are their children. It’s your teammates, your classmates, the alumni who have come before you and the students who will wear the blue and gold for the next 100 years. It’s your parents, and your friends’ parents who take care of you when yours aren’t around.

Thank you for all you have done for me and so many others. I hope you enjoy your retirement, but please don’t go too far, I need you. We need you.

For me, Cathedral family is Noah Barth running on the field alongside his defensive coordinator dad, Adam. It’s Mr. Tim White watching, with pride, as his daughter Mary Ann, guides her Girl’s Lacrosse team. It’s Elijah Land prowling the sidelines right behind his dad, coach Dustin and it’s John O’Hara’s daughter, Lucy, getting carried through the hallways by the track and field seniors. I remember back to 2003, when my own then 7-year-old son Brandon played in the bleachers at a Cathedral wrestling meet with a young Jenna Masterson, and 11 years later the two were in the same senior retreat group. Divine providence is pretty cool. In order to understand our family, you need to understand that we have been formed by the actions of everyone who has taught, coached, mentored and learned at Cathedral. And it’s critical to know we’ve been shaped by our celebrations, and by our grief. In 2005, one of our football players, Jeramy Schmitt, passed away on our football field. Shortly after we received word that Jeramy had died, the coaches gathered together to decide how we would tell our players the news. For me, one voice stood above all the others. Jim McLinn gathered us and told us, we are going to call all the families, then we are going to gather the players together, and we are going to tell them we love them. We are going to hold them. And we are going to keep them together until their parents get here.

Mr. McLinn — Jim — you saved my life that day, you saved our coaches that day, you saved our boys that day. You have saved thousands of lives during your time here.

The world in which we live in is changing. As a high school student my community was challenged by some individuals who believed that we — Jews — didn’t belong. What I learned as a young Jewish man was that haters can take anything away from you but the knowledge in your head. There are so many teachers seated behind me, that taught from their hearts and those lessons truly changed your lives. So, it is critical that you continue to learn. The standard of excellence at Cathedral is always rising, as it should. But in addition to prodding the future, you draw from the past. In so many ways, this class is old school Cathedral. You fearlessly unite around one another and defend and protect all in this Irish clan. We protected our classmates though our support of the Briezy’s Bunch and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and for these efforts two of your classmates were named Students of the Year. You have demonstrated your commitment to an option for the poor in the quality of the service you have performed for others. You have built a home with Habitat for Humanity, danced for Riley’s kids, collected cereal for Dayspring center, ministered to children in Peru, and many of you are traveling this summer to Tanzania to experience a people and a place that will transform you. I saw my own son, Brandon, and his mother, Stephanie, transformed by that trip and by the teacher who took them. You have experienced athletic excellence and this year has been an incredible journey as we watched our girls’ soccer team win their third state championship, while our cross-country runners WWW.GOCATHEDRAL.COM 19

IRISH ACADEMICS set records and showed us the value of teamwork as they took second in the state while crowning a state and a national individual champion. Our Hockey team’s championship celebration is second to none And the back-to-back state championships of our wrestling team is bested only by the respect the athletes show for the sport. There are so many individual state champions in this class, but through your actions you made your teammates better. The hope our musicians, singers, actors and crews inspire, remind us to remember “How Lucky ‘We’ Are” and I see that every time you share your talents with us on the stage, at a concert, and during mass. But the way our theater department accepts newcomers to their productions is an example the whole school can follow. Because as Dr. Seuss reminds us “a person’s a person no matter how small.” Six members of this class are incredible examples of how our hearts and minds are educated, when they were named National Merit Semifinalists. Your faith — the very core reason for Cathedral to exist — runs through our hallways. And our senior retreats make that faith journey even stronger. It was a gift to be able to speak with you and I am forever changed by the love and compassion I witnessed with group 5 on retreats 2 and 4. I don’t know if the lessons we shared on retreat have truly sunk in yet. I know that at the time and in the moment those thoughts and actions were pure and they were genuine. I hope that you will continue to use those lessons to make a difference in the lives of all the people that you encounter in your life. And always remember what we say, “The devil said to me, ‘You better prepare, there’s a storm coming.’ And I replied to the devil, ‘I am the storm.’” My challenge to you as you end this part of your Cathedral journey — is to always find a way to be the storm. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, Dr. King told us. If you see injustice, rise up and be the storm for justice.

20

CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS • SPRING/SUMMER 2019

If you can’t feed 100 people, be the storm and feed just one as Mother Teresa urged us. We must always take sides, Elie Wiesel tells us. Because silence encourages the tormentor. If you see someone hanging on the sidelines, wanting to stay out of that thing that’s going to be messy, and hard, and maybe even unpopular be the storm — oftentimes the right thing is not the easy thing. The lessons that I learned from the beautiful life and legacy of our beloved Kassie Braun, is that if you want to be a citizen of the world, you must first live in the world you want to change. So, go out learn more, serve more, grow. But remember when Cathedral calls, when Momma calls, follow your heart and come home. I hope you develop the wisdom to lead, the competence to see, the courage to act and most importantly the compassion to inspire. One last favor, please hold hands. Remember we came as many but we leave as one class. And my last message to you is the same one I left you with on retreat. There are many of your teachers who are so proud of you and care about you. I just happen to be the one to tell you this last message. We love you. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

“My challenge to you as you end this part of your Cathedral journey— is to always find a way to

be the storm.

Mary Ording ’09 Hemer’s Home Court Advantage

Alumna Is New Head Volleyball Coach for Lady Irish If you’ve been around Cathedral volleyball at all in the past ten years, you’ve likely seen Mary Ording ’09 Hemer. At 6’3’’ and a smile that lights up the room, she’s hard to miss. Combine that with the fact that Muffin, Cathedral’s beloved therapy dog, is usually right beside her, and you can understand why Hemer is so popular on campus. Hemer’s Cathedral story dates back to the mid2000s. She was a member of the volleyball state championship teams in 2006 and 2008. She graduated from Cathedral in 2009, and headed to the University of Wisconsin on a volleyball scholarship. While at the University of Wisconsin, Hemer played three positions and was co-captain her senior year. In her fifth year at Wisconsin, Hemer was a student volunteer coach. That season, Wisconsin’s program finished as the NCAA national runner-up. Hemer graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education. Hemer returned to Cathedral 2014 and served as girls varsity assistant volleyball coach under her former coach and mentor, Jean Kesterson. In 2015, she led Cathedral’s boys volleyball team as the interim head coach. From November 2017 until December 2018, Hemer was the assistant varsity boys volleyball coach under another one of her former coaches and mentors,

Rhonda Low. In addition to her work with Cathedral’s varsity girls and boys volleyball programs, Hemer has been the head coach of the Irish Juniors Volleyball Club since 2014. She has also served as a youth summer camp volleyball coach for more than 10 years. It was in December of last year that Hemer was named the new head volleyball coach for the Lady Irish. “I have been around volleyball for 15 years,” says Hemer. “Being named the head coach of Cathedral’s girls volleyball program is an honor that I don’t take lightly. I’m very excited about this opportunity because I know Cathedral, I know the program, and I know the athletes. It’s great to be in the driver’s seat and help our athletes not only develop their volleyball skills, but help them develop skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.” In addition to her coaching duties, Hemer is a school counselor at Cathedral. She received her Master’s Degree in counseling from Butler University in 2018.

GIRLS TENNIS—State Champions!

They were loaded, and they showed it. If there was a theme to the mega-successful 2019 Cathedral High School girls tennis season, that may have been it. It was a season that ended with the Lady Irish’s third state tennis title in school history. “It was a successful season,” Irish coach Mark Noe said. “No one celebrated early, but the girls played great tennis.” The Irish, who entered the postseason ranked No. 1 in the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association 2019 poll, won the Indiana High School Athletic Association state title with a 3-2 victory over No. 2 Park Tudor in the state final at North Central High School on June 1. They finished the season 23-0. The state title came in dramatic fashion. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

boys track and field From the start, it was special. The 2019 Cathedral High School boys track and field season didn’t just start that way. It remained that way throughout, with a slew of memorable individual performances – and a remarkable team performance. Cole Hocker, one of the nation’s top high school distance runners, capped a record-setting senior season with a pair of state titles – and the Irish boys as a team in 2019 turned in their most complete finish in recent memory at the Indiana High School Athletic Association State track and field meet. “What we were able to do this year is pretty awesome,” Irish boys track and field coach John O’Hara said. Hocker, a senior, won the 800 and the 1,600 meter runs at the state meet at Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington on May 31 – winning the 1,600 in 4:07 and the 800 with a time of 1:51.48. WRESTLING—State Champions! This one was as hard-earned as it was dramatic. However it happened, the Cathedral Irish are Indiana state wrestling champions again. Junior Elliott Rodgers and senior Jordan Slivka won individual state titles, and the Irish won the Indiana High School Athletic Association state team title over a competitive, tightly-bunched field at Bankers Life Field House in downtown Indianapolis on February 15-16. “This year might even have topped last year,” Irish wrestling coach Sean McGinley said. “I didn’t know how we could top last year’s tournament. We won so many matches in the last second (in 2018); it was an incredible feeling.” Rodgers and Slivka clinched the team state title with dramatic victories that clinched their individual state titles. It was the Irish’s second consecutive state title and the third since 2014. “We were behind in some big matches, with some overtime matches, but winning the two final matches was really icing on the cake,” McGinley said. The Irish won the ’19 title with strong postseason performances by five state qualifiers: Rodgers, Slivka, freshman Zeke Seltzer and seniors Alex Mosconi and Lukasz Walendzak. boys lacrosse—State Champions! The tradition continues. That has been an ongoing theme in recent seasons for Cathedral High School boys lacrosse, and the theme remained strong in 2019. The Irish, state champions in 2013 and 2016-2017, finished the ’19 season as the state champions for the fourth time this decade. The Irish, state runner-up in 2018, beat Hamilton Southeastern, 13-6, in the 2019 Indiana High School Lacrosse Association state championship game. It was yet another season for the Irish at the top of Indiana lacrosse, who entered the postseason ranked No. 1 in the state. “We’ve always been the team to beat, and that’s what we want to be,” Irish lacrosse coach Andy Gruber said. RUGBY—State Champions! This wasn’t the easiest season for the Royal Irish Rugby Society. A perennial state, Midwest and national power, the Royal Irish – a rugby team made up of players from Cathedral and Bishop Chatard – were still powerful and still ranked among the nation’s top programs in 2019. And while the Royal Irish placed just short of a couple of their seasonal goals, the season by any measure was a successful one – and the Royal Irish capped the season with a victory over a state rival for yet another Indiana State Championship. “This year’s team did pretty well for itself,” Royal Irish coach Scott Peterson said. The Royal Irish – national champions in 2012, 2014-2015 and 2017 – finished second in the Midwest tournament in 2019, and also finished second in the national tournament. They played well in preliminary and semifinal rounds in each tournament before losing in the championship game.

cheerleading

The growth continues. That has been a recent trend for Cathedral High School softball, a trend that continued in 2019 with yet another deep postseason run. “Expectations are high for these kids,” Irish softball coach Tony Matthews said. Those expectations were fulfilled yet again in ’19, with the Irish qualifying for the semi-state round of the Indiana High School Activities Association state tournament for a second consecutive season and a third time in four seasons. “It was huge,” Matthews said. “It was huge getting back there.” The Irish – who were ranked No. 9 in Class 4A in the late May Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association led the season 22-8, losing to state power and 2019 state finalist Center Grove 3-0 in the semifinal of the semi-state round on June 1.

It was a fond farewell. That’s how Brenda Kelly will remember her final year coaching Cathedral High School cheerleading, a bittersweet year made easier because of what Kelly believes is a bright future. Kelly, who coached Cathedral cheerleading for 20 seasons, the past 17 as the program’s head coach, announced her retirement shortly after the 2018-19 season. GIRLS LACROSSE

This wasn’t a normal season for Cathedral High School girls lacrosse. No, 2019 was difficult – with many lessons learned. But Irish girls lacrosse coach Mary Ann White said none of that made it a lost season. Far from it. “It was a growing year,” White said. The Irish, long one of Indiana’s elite high school girls lacrosse programs, entered the season knowing it would be a rebuilding season with an eye on the future. It became just that, and the Irish finished with an 8-11 record. “It was a bit of a tough year,” White said. “We lost more games than we have in the past, but I think it’s crucial to our development. We’re growing a lot, and we still have a lot of room to grow and develop.” The Irish not only dealt with youth, they also handled multiple injuries to key players throughout the season. But it was the lessons learned dealing with adversity that White said will benefit the Irish moving forward. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

GIRLS TRACK & Field

The Lady Irish finished 10-15 in 2018-2019, winning five of their final 10 games following a difficult 4-9 start that featured multiple early-season injuries and obstacles. They beat Arsenal Tech 58-16 in the first round of the Section 10, Class 4A tournament at Cathedral, then finished the season by losing to Heritage Christian in the sectional semifinal, 64-47.

The team maximized its potential. When it came to the Cathedral High School 2019 girls track and field season, that’s how coach Mark Doctor described it. The Irish may have lacked numbers, but they didn’t lack quality. “The term I used to describe them this year was small but mighty,” Doctor said. In a year when the roster size was smaller than normal, the results were plenty big as the Irish finished second in the City Meet before sending a slew of runners and athletes deep into the postseason. “Our numbers were down, but the people we had were pretty good,” Doctor said.

The loss ended a season in which the Irish got solid performances from a slew of young players who should set the tone for a strong future. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

girls swimming & Diving

Consider the foundation laid. This was the perfect mix. Not only did Cathedral High School’s girls swimming team have a solid season in 2018-2019, the Irish had that season with a young team that gained valuable experience. As Ashley Hill sees it, that makes for an optimistic combination. “It was a fantastic year with a lot of potential for the future, which is a lot of fun,” said Hill, who in ‘18-‘19 finished her second season as the Irish’s swimming coach. Irish girls swimming in 2018-2019 not only won the City Championship, they placed sixth in the North Central Sectional with junior diver Sophie Mernitz winning the sectional title and advancing through the regional meet to the Indiana High School Athletic Association state meet at IUPUI. The Cathedral way worked in a big way in 2019. The Cathedral High School baseball team, long built on strong pitching and sound defense, parlayed those strengths into yet another memorable season in ’19. The result: Another run in the postseason. “We had a lot of confidence in our returning pitching,” Cathedral baseball coach Ed Freije said. “We had some ups and downs like any season goes. We knew that was going to be a strength and it showed throughout the season.” The Irish, the 2017 Class 4A Indiana High School Athletic Association state champions and the 2018 state runners-up, finished the 2019 season 19-7. They advanced to a Class 4A regional semifinal at Decatur Central, losing there to Greenfield Central by a score of 4-1. The Irish (unranked in the state) beat Covenant Christian, 2-0, in the City Championship Game on May 10 at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis. They beat Bishop Chatard, 1-0, at Brunette Park on Senior Night. They then won the Section 10 title and beat Arsenal Tech 24-0 in Round 1, Warren Central 8-2 in the semifinal and New Palestine 10-2 in the championship game. The 2019 Cathedral High School boys volleyball season wasn’t easy. The Irish were young and inexperienced, and it took the leadership of a few key upperclassmen to provide the foundation for a successful season. Mission accomplished. With former role players assuming key positions, the Irish – long one of the top high school boys volleyball programs in Indiana – again spent the season as one of the state’s top-ranked teams. They also again won the regional tournament and advanced to the Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association state tournament. “We were young,” longtime Irish coach Rhonda Low said of 2019 team. “We had returning players, but they were role players. All of our leaders graduated last year and the year before. This year, it was more impactful than prior years.”

All in all, Josh Payne liked the results. “Overall, it was a pretty good season,” Payne said. Payne, the head coach of the Cathedral High School bowling team, said there were multiple reasons that was true for the program in 2018-2019. Irish boys bowling fielded a young team in ’18-’19, and the number of bowlers in the program boded well for the future. There were individual standout performances, and solid team efforts. Payne also said while the Irish didn’t field a girls team for the first time in recent memory, there is interest in that program moving forward. The boys in ’18-’19 also turned in a strong season in terms of results despite being in a tougher conference than recent seasons. “They’re a great group,” Payne said. “They’re very committed to bowling and enjoy it.”

boys swimming & Diving Ashley Hill summed up the season with one word. “Fantastic,” she said. Hill, head coach of Cathedral High School’s boys swimming team, said the circumstances meant there was no other way to describe it. The Irish, after the graduation the previous year of a strong senior class, established a foundation during 2018-2019 that should provide the core for strong seasons going forward. That made the season a success. “With this group of young men, they have chance in the next two or three years to get back to where we were,” Hill said following the ’18-19 season. The Irish boys, after a strong ’17-’18 season that featured four school records, in ‘18’-19 returned seven swimmers from the previous season. They finished the season with 17 boys, including a strong five-member freshman class that Hill said could form the core of the program moving forward. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

boys golf Consider the foundation laid. That was a theme throughout the Cathedral High School 2019 boys golf season, with a young team experiencing success in the present and also establishing itself as contender for the future. “It was a really, really fun season,” Irish golf coach Patrick Fagan said. There were many reasons for that. First, the Irish were more successful in ’19 than many observers expected. Despite the loss after the 2018 season of three-time All-State golfer Austin Vukovits, the Irish – after entering the season unranked – immediately proved doubters wrong and spent the 2019 season ranked around or in the Top 10 of the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association state poll. The Irish were ranked No. 9 in the final IHSGCA 2019 poll. Read more at: www.gocathedral.com/athletics

boys Basketball Jason Delaney likes the state of Cathedral High School boys basketball. “We’re right there,” he said. That the Irish fell frustratingly short of very lofty goals during the 2018-2019 season didn’t change that. Nor did it change what the Irish accomplished in a very memorable season. The Irish won a third consecutive City Championship for the first time in a decade, spending the season in the Top 10 in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Class 4A state rankings while playing the state’s second-toughest schedule. “This was kind of the year we had been building toward with this group,” said Delaney, whose teams are 52-20 in his three seasons at Cathedral. “There are a lot of things we did really, really well. “They were outstanding young men. Just a pleasure to coach.”

They were about a team concept – and clutch play. The 2018-2019 Central Indiana Knights also were about season-long improvement, all of which coach Kevin Karlander said made a championship season all the more special. “This group came together all season long,” Karlander said. The Knights, made up of players from Cathedral, Bishop Chatard, Guerin Catholic, Noblesville, Park Tudor and Pendleton Heights high schools, made their third consecutive state final appearance in 2018-2019. They capped the season with 4-2 victory over Evansville in the Class 3A Indiana State High School Hockey State final. The Knights, who won the Class 3A state title in 2016-2017 and were state Class 4A runners-up in 2017-2018, lost a slew of veteran talent from ’17-’18. Karlander said observers had low expectations for the Knights, with some expecting them to be placed low in Class 3A or even in 2A in a state-tournament process that places the strongest teams in 4A, the next-strongest in 3A and so on. Qualifying for the 3A tournament made the season a success.
