SEEMS LIKE A MILLION and one things could go wrong on a couple’s wedding day. The flowers might not show up, or the cake might get dropped. And people love to tell their horror stories about ripped dresses, late photographers, and the bridesmaid who had a meltdown about her hair. But perhaps one secret fear all brides have is of something a little less tangible than food and flowers. What if, after all of the hard work and planning, guests consider the wedding to be a bore?

26

INDIANA BRIDE | 2016

“Yes, they should think about that,” says Sarah Godby, vice president of sales and marketing for the Ritz Charles. Of course, if you surround yourself with friends and family who are genuinely excited for your wedding day, you probably don’t have anything to worry about. The people might be 95 percent of the party, but there are definitely things you can do to ensure that the remaining 5 percent of your celebration is much fun as possible. For instance, Maryanne Hawkins, director/sales manager at The Willows on Westfield, helped a bride throw a Halloween wedding last October. Along with carved pumpkins and an orange cake dripping with black icing, all of the guests dressed up, and there were some pretty funny and elaborate costumes. “It was the best party I’ve ever been to,” Hawkins says. “It was so much fun.”

But not every bride is going to host an extravagant masquerade wedding, so here are some ideas from the pros that are sure to keep the festivities pumping from start to finish.

BREAK IT UP One of the most important things in creating a perfect party atmosphere is a crowd that’s frequently moving and interacting. “I remember several years ago being at a conference and a nationally known eventplanner said, ‘Make sure that at least every 45 minutes you have something change during your reception,’” Godby says. “That keeps people wondering what’s coming next and keeps them engaged.” Separate areas make for a reception that flows and feels more lively than staying in

the same room for four or five hours. For example, guests can begin in one place with cocktails and appetizers, followed by dinner in a different space, and another for dancing afterward. Sometimes, each of those can be individual rooms, while other venues might lend themselves to starting guests on the ground floor, moving them to a balcony, and then returning to the first level for dancing. After cocktails, dinner, cake-cutting, and other traditions, couples often leave the rest of the night to dancing. It’s an obvious way to keep people moving, but for guests who aren’t interested in showing off their moves all night, there are other ways to involve them in your special day. You can continue breaking up the night by offering different types of entertainment. Hawkins suggests interactive games like Jenga or cornhole, two fun and affordable solutions. When the sun finally sets, bringing out

glowsticks transitions the evening from formal event to fun party. Late-night snacks and food bars provide another tasty way to keep guests entertained into the wee hours. Consider bringing in fast food like pizza or burgers, or some caterers will provide ice cream, candy, and salty snacks. Other activities for those who aren’t partial to the dance floor can include photo booths or slideshows. Guests can dress up, use props, and cheese for the camera. Plus, if the photographer gives you copies of the pictures, they make excellent mementos of the night. Ian Borgerhoff, who runs a photography, video, and photo-booth company, provides parties with a booth that’s essentially a portable version of his studio. All of the highquality pictures are available online within 48 hours and can be downloaded, shared, and printed.

27

He can also provide a day-of slideshow. If there’s time between the ceremony and reception, Borgerhoff and his team will pick some of the top photos from the day and loop them on a display during the reception so guests can see all of the activity that went into the wedding before it even began. Creating a slideshow with pictures of the bride and groom as children and during their first dates is another sweet way to entertain guests. Oftentimes, removing stress from your guests’ evening is an easy way to help them relax and have a good time. Offering rides back to the hotel for those who have been drinking or who aren’t familiar with the city is helpful,

more interesting. Even your save-the-dates and invitations will be essential in determining the tone you want. Sometimes, it’s the little things that really create the right environment. “The thing people probably think about least of all is lighting,” Godby says. “It’s almost as important as anything because it does set the atmosphere. If you do some uplighting around the room, it just makes it even more fun and celebratory.” Your bridal party will play a large role in getting the party started—and keeping it going until last call—so making sure they’re having a good time can make the entire day more fun. Jack Carr Boyd’s Indy Trolley can shuttle

“[Parties have] come in the Thursday night before their wedding, and we taught everyone Thriller and the Electric Slide,” says Suzi DeSante, owner and instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Zionsville. “Once, we taught everyone to swing dance to ‘With a Little Help From my Friends’ by The Beatles.”

as is being mindful of the younger set. “We’ve been seeing things like a kids’ activity room with special meals, a babysitter, and things for kids to do, like coloring, crafts, and watching movies,” Hawkins says. Kids are kept entertained, and Mom and Dad essentially have a date night to themselves.

large groups (up to 26 people) from the salon to the ceremony venue. Boyd’s climatecontrolled ride is an easy and time-efficient way to transport the bridal party to and from photography locations between the ceremony and reception. “It will throw a wedding over the top for all of the guests that get to see it, ride in it, and experience it,” Boyd says. Taking a group dance lesson can be a great way for the party to bond. Plus, learning new moves can give even the shyest groomsman or bridesmaid a little more confidence when the music starts up.

brides spinning a song with the DJ or singing a tune with the band, there are several ways to incorporate unique elements into your reception. Even if you don’t want to do something elaborate, it’s a good idea to have a few moves up your sleeve for the first dance. “It adds visual interest to your wedding,” DeSante says. “Because if you just do the typical stand-and-sway, honestly, your audience is going to pay attention for about 15 seconds, and then they’re going to start talking among themselves at the tables. “We do recommend you go no longer than a minute and a half,” she adds, “because no

SET THE TONE Couples can establish the mood of their wedding long before people walk into the reception. A well-done theme can make simple aspects like the guest book and programs 28

FUEL THE CROWD Group dances are a fun way to start the reception because, of course, music and dancing are essential parts of throwing a great soiree. From choreographed first dances to

matter how amazing you are, people will start to zone out.” Borgerhoff, who spends a lot of time trying to perfectly capture the party, has found that the bride and groom’s presence significantly affects the mood of the occasion. “If you want a party or the dance floor to stay active, the bride and groom have to be part of the dancing,” he says. Music-wise, it’s important to incorporate songs that appeal to all age groups, but to also include music to which you and your friends are going to want to dance. You won’t regret taking the time to find the right DJ or band who fits your style and discussing those songs you definitely want played, as well as those you absolutely don’t want to hear. “You really want to consider somebody who’s not just going to play songs, but is going to build a whole atmosphere around your wedding reception,” Godby says. “It just makes a big difference. A really good DJ can get people up who never dance, and that makes everybody have more fun.”

Just Dance

EXTEND THE PARTY

Want to get grumpy Uncle Bob up out of his chair? James Gucinski, owner of Lakeside Entertainment, sings the praises of these seven songs that can keep guests busting a move.

If you and your significant other want to keep the good times going, consider a more active honeymoon as opposed to a relaxingon-the-beach type of vacation. “There are a lot of resorts in the Caribbean that are more party-oriented compared to others, so [couples] would want to clarify whether they’re looking for a resort that is going to be quieter versus one that’s going to have a lot of activity and nightlife,” says LeAnn Decker, senior travel-agency consultant for AAA Hoosier Motor Club. Those types of resorts can often be found in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Aruba, and other similar locales. But you can always forgo the traditional route entirely by opting for a destination wedding. “Doing an all-inclusive resort is very popular because couples can invite their guests and know that everything is pretty much covered,” Decker says. Another idea is taking your party on a cruise and tying the knot on the boat or in one of the ports. And don’t forget Las Vegas! When you consider all of your options, you realize the ways to make your wedding the party of a lifetime are truly endless.

{ “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars } “It’s got a little old-school feel to it, and I think it will be timeless. It melts into the funk, disco vibe.” { “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire } “just has really good beats.” { “Fireball” by Pitbull feat. John Ryan } Dale! This tune’s Latin feel and different tempo give it wedding-approved appeal. { “Starships” by Nicki Minaj } Calling all ladies: “Bridesmaids and brides seem to really know the lyrics,” Gucinski says. { “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” by Luke Bryan } “It’s a really great, upbeat country song that puts people on the dance floor,” Gucinksi says. { “Shout” by The Isley Brothers } Remember the scene from Animal House? This retro number is a crowdpleaser, especially if played later in the evening. “It faded about eight or nine years ago,” Gucinski says. “Then the movie Wedding Crashers came out, and it re-energized the song.” { “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker } “is a good sing-a-long song that people enjoy.”
