Indiana Lighting Center has served Indiana since 1973. In that time we have grown to be a market leader in the Indiana lighting field. With three locations in the greater Indianapolis area, we have the largest number of lighting fixtures on display. Still in our original location, our goal has been to create a lighting store like no other, to build a business that our customers would benefit and our staff would be proud to work for.

spend a morning browsing Printtext’s expansive collection of indie pubs. The 700-plus magazine titles in Ben and Janneane Blevins’ shop and the steady stream of visitors prove people still want to get their hands on hard copies of magazines. While they aren’t averse to stocking supermarket publications on their shelves, they prefer the more unique periodicals, like Cherry Bombe, a biannual about women and food; or 032c, a Berlin-based arts publication. Ben’s personal favorite is Four&Sons, where dogs and culture collide. (He claims this one is also the favorite of Huckleberry, the couple’s red Labrador.) Ben and Janneane travel around the world, looking for new titles and

They can tell readers where a magazine is published and suggest other periodicals in the same category. They are also branching out with community events, like a recent poetry reading and art show. “We really opened this with the intention of creating a nexus for design-minded and community-minded people,” Ben says. “We wanted to have a place where people from out-of-town can connect with people in the city and vice versa.” IM SHOPS | 2016

CARL BRADLEY REMEMBERS HIS FIRST PAIR OF NIKE AIR JORDANS.
His brother received a pair as a birthday gift, and 9-year-old Carl got his own surprise when his mother presented him with a pair of Nike Jordan 1s a few weeks later. As a kid, Bradley would trade shoes with his classmates, but today, he and co-owner Fred Jones— yes, the one of Pacer’s fame—have the real deal at the Luxury Sneaker Exchange, a store with an expansive collection of high-end and exclusive kicks. Luxury sneakers tend to be limited production and sell out quickly, Bradley says. Take, for instance, the Kanye West and Adidas collab, the Yeezy Boost 350 and Yeezy Boost 750. Those shoes sold out online within minutes. They originally sold for $200 and $350, respectively, but in the resale market, they can fetch upwards of $2,000, Bradley says. That may seem like a steep price to stomach, but some customers have been waiting their whole lives to get their hands on a pair of shoes One of the most sought-after shoes in the world righ now, the Yeezy like this. “You get people who are in Boost 750, featuring glow-in-thetheir mid-30s, and they can’t stop dark soles, is going for $1,400 at The Luxury Sneaker Exchange. coming in because they remember these shoes,” Bradley says. “Now they can afford them.” Bradley will resell used shoes, although the store has specific requirements for pre-owned shoes. They have to look like new, he says. Still, even pre-owned shoes can make the wearer feel special. Just ask Bradley, who’s making a business out of his obsession. “It’s hard collecting sneakers,” Bradley says. “I always make sure I get two. I get one for the store, and I get one for myself.”

But they wouldn’t get to see and feel the merchandise before buying. “I think a lot of times, the folks who come in here are looking for something different that you can’t find someplace else,” Gilmore says. “That might be a little more fashion driven and not so much mass market. The stuff I carry is special for the area. I carry some everyday styles. I carry some stuff that’s spicier. It’s a range of different styles for different occasions.”

Agrarian
1051 E. 54th St., see listing, pg. 65 AGRARIAN BILLS ITSELF AS AN “URBAN
farm boutique.” The shop was started to meet a growing demand by city folks who wanted a little bit of country in their backyards. Want chickens? Pick out some chicks in the spring or chicken feed any time of the year. Buzzed on bees? Agrarian has beekeeping supplies for urban hives. “I think people want to have a little more control over where their food comes from,” says Anne Collins, who owns Agrarian with Andrew Brake and David Stuckert. “If you raise your own chickens and grow your own food, you have more control over that. It’s becoming more mainstream as people see how easy it is.” City farmers can find Agrarian on 64th Street, near the Monon Trail. The location also sells T-shirts, candles, and other gift items, catering to the curious who might walk in from the Monon. They keep a supply of locally sourced honey, coffee, and other products on hand. They also offer classes on raising chickens, making rain barrels, or creating your own soaps. Agrarian’s customers appreciate having a place to shop where they can talk to people who share their passions, Collins says. Raising chickens or bees isn’t as hard as it may sound. Collins has three small children, and she easily finds time to take care of her own flock. Indianapolis zoning laws allow 12 chickens and one rooster, although some cities and homeowners associations may have different laws in place. A good laying breed can give you an egg a day, and those eggs can add up quicker than you can scramble them. They also fill an important need for people who look longingly at the open fields. “I wasn’t a farm girl, but I always wanted to be,” Collins says. “This is my way of having a little bit of the farm in the city.” Looking to start your own urban farm? Agrarian will set you up for success with co-owner Anne Collins’ firsthand knowledge (she keeps a coop at home with 13 chickens), a chicken feed buffet bar featuring locally sourced grains, and a variety of kitchenwares in which to store and serve your fresh eggs.

They hail from areas around the world, depending on where the olives are being harvested. At Vital Skates, owner Korvin Bothwell carries around 100 pairs of skates in the store and also offers skating accessories, apparel, and information on the local roller derby leagues. A starter set of skates can cost $100, with the luxury brands hitting $700 or $800. Hard-to-fit feet might be better off in a pair of custom skates, which are made on-site. “The fit of a roller skate is much more important than the fit of a running shoe, because when you’re skating, you move your feet sideways to propel yourself,” says Bothwell, a roller derby skater himself. “Our specialty is fitting and our ability to match the skater’s foot to the right boot.” Vital Skates also offers apparel from Bullet Boutfits, a local designer, as well as skate pads to cut down on injuries. Everyone can find something fun at Vital Skates, but it certainly caters to its roller derby customers. With four local leagues and another nine leagues within an hour’s drive, Bothwell has plenty of people who need a good pair of skates. made. When you buy Indiana products, you’re supporting a local business, and you know the people who made those goods are earning a living wage. Plus, to sweeten the deal, you’re getting one-of-a-kind pieces that aren’t being mass-produced around the world. The best part? Local creators are pretty easy to find these days. Brooke Lindemann at Leather Feather Stone handmakes gorgeous leather bags, wallets, and accessories. In the past, you could only find her stuff on Etsy, but now you can check it out in-person at Beauty + Grace. Rana Salame’s eyecatching quartz jewelry can be found at Lux & Ivy and Homespun. And even grocery stores like Kroger and Marsh now stock local products, including Eisele’s Honey, Bee Free’s surprisingly delicious gluten-free cookies, and, of course, Oliver wine. Shan Parker, co-founder of Onyx Exchange, sells hand-poured candles at 17 different locations around Indiana, including Homespun, one of his favorite places to shop for local artisan’s goods. “Since all the items are handmade around the country and many of them in Indiana, there’s a good chance that those small businesses are doing great things for the world,” he says. The Good Earth in Broad Ripple also carries a pretty thorough collection of soaps, food, detergents, and other items made in the Hoosier state.
Responsible Sourcing U N FORTU NATELY,
SHOPPERS HEAR A LOT ABOUT ECO-CONSCIOUS, FREE TRADE, sustainable living, and green products. It’s confusing. You want to make sure your dollar isn’t going straight into the pocket of some sweatshop-owner overseas, but it can be difficult to distinguish a truly ethical product from a company that just slapped some earth-friendly sounding words on the label to earn an extra buck. Many consumers want to know: How can they ensure their dollar is going toward a better world, and more importantly, how can they do it right here in Indianapolis?

items don’t entirely solve the problem. Consumers still have to ask how and where the fabric that ended up in that shirt was made. Just because a local artist designs and sews her own clothes doesn’t always mean the fabric was produced in the same conditions. Parker knows how difficult it can be to run a small business and use ethical practices, too. “We reuse a lot of packing materials and use sustainable opIM SHOPS | 2016

tions when we can. There’s a fine line to walk for a small business trying to be profitable, sustainable, and grow all at the same time,” he says. Onyx Exchange offers a line of candles that come in upcycled wine bottles transformed into tumblers. Customers can clean up and use the glass when the candle is done. Another step they’ve taken is producing bar soaps that don’t contain any palm oil, an ingredient whose industry has wreaked havoc on the environment and many South Pacific habitats. Herbal Arts also sells handmade eco-conscious soaps and detergents. The shop used to be located in Fishers, but owner Brian Paffen is currently between locations, hoping to settle on the northside of Indianapolis where more people can access his goods. Until then, you can find some of his products at Eva Maison, another great source for organic beauty supplies. Many people choose organic products for the health benefits, but Paffen thinks you should also applaud their environmental impact. “Many [organic] farms work off a lot of wind energy, so that scales back our carbon footprint,” says Paffen, explaining why organic is often a better choice than all-natural products. “People don’t realize that anyone can label something a natural product, but if you’re making a product and labeling it organic, there are laws and stipulations you have to follow.” Of course, organic products aren’t the only things made with sustainable materials. Howl and Hide Supply Company sells their handmade leather goods at James Dant in Irvington, and they take their material sourcing seriously. “Most leather [in fashion] comes from farms used for fast production in the food industry,” says owner Christian Resiak. Instead, Howl and Hide chooses to use leather from a tannery that raises free-range, grass-fed cows. “When the cows age, the hides become stronger with maturity. Once the animal passes away from natural causes,

People for Urban Progress repurposes weird materials such as roof and acoustic fabric from the RCA Dome after it was demolished and items salvaged after Super Bowl XLVI including event banners, fence-wrap mesh, and polyester from Lucas Oil. Their bags and wallets can be purchased at shops all over the city, including their studio in Fountain Square.
Fair Trade WHEN IT COMES TO FINDING PROD-
ucts that are ethically sourced from the very beginning of the process, your best bet is looking for items stamped with the Fair Trade certification. Fair Trade USA audits and certifies the relations between U.S. companies, and they enforce fairly rigorous social, environmental, and economic standards. Most grocery stores stock certified items, but if you want to shop Fair Trade and support local businesses at the same time, you’re in luck. Mile Square Coffee serves freshly roasted and ethical cups of joe, while Endan-
gered Species Chocolate makes tasty treats and also donates ten percent of profits to various wildlife preservation organizations. Since Fair Trade USA focuses on the production of food, the Fair Trade Federation enforces similar standards in the fashion and home goods industries. Global Gifts on Mass Ave and in Nora stocks purses, jewelry, kitchenware, home decor, and even some women’s and children’s clothes, and each of their suppliers is an FTF-certified company. Liz Alig is a Fair Trade clothing line founded by Elizabeth Roney, an Indianapolis native who also does work for PUP. Her designs are sold at Lesley Jane in Zionsville, Marigold in Broad Ripple, and Homespun and Sage Boutique on Mass Ave. Roney follows the production of each piece of clothing, from the fiber production and textileweaving to the dying of fabric and construction of the clothing. Each step along the way must use factories that provide fair wages and safe working environments for their employees.
Reading Between the Lines WITH SO MANY COMPANIES CLAIMING
to be eco-friendly or natural, it can be difficult to figure out what products to buy and which to avoid. The FTC enforces Green Guides for labeling products, but companies can still get away with making vague claims. A general rule of thumb: The more specific the packaging gets about how they make the world greener, the more likely it is they really do those things. “When it comes to distinguishing what is really ethical or all-natural it comes down to the customer due diligence,” says Parker at Onyx Exchange. “Don’t believe a label when it says “Ethical” or “All-Natural” on the front. Read the ingredient list.” And above all, get out there and explore. So many companies here in Indianapolis are doing great things for our world, and they’re not too hard to find.

“Blend, blend, blend!” Kayla Vickers with Salon 01 is here to help us pull off the latest beauty trends.
Golden Girl WHETHER YOU LIKE TO GO ALL OUT OR PREFER TO FLY UNDER THE RADAR, WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED WITH THIS SEASON’S GLOWING BEAUTY TRENDS. by Summer Daily Makeup by Kayla Vickers for Salon 01 Model Eleanor Klemsz courtesy Helen Wells Agency
MAKEUP IS ALL OR NOTHING this fall. On one hand, natural pallets and minimalist looks were spotted all over New York during Fashion Week, but some designers broke the mold and went for shimmering styles and bold lips. How do you pull of an au naturale face without looking naked? And how do you infuse a little sparkle into your routine without looking like a glitter bomb went off in your bathroom? Kayla Vickers at Salon 01 showed us the ropes and gave us some tips for achieving that perfect golden glow.

BEAUTY
FOR THE NATURAL EYE, SHE STARTED
by applying a Purepressed Base Mineral foundation by Jane Iredale to even out skin tones. Next she prepped the eyelids with a basic primer. When it comes to picking out the right eye shadow, Vickers says less is more. “Neutral, matte colors will make the eye pop without drawing attention to the actual eye makeup,” she explains. For this look, Vickers chose a pale powder applied to the entire lid up to the brow line. This highlights and opens up the eye. Then she added a slightly rosy shadow on the lid only and a darker hue to the outside corner and crease. Forgo eyeliner, and instead apply a subtle line of the same dark eye shadow under the lower eyelash to create a natural liner effect. Finish with a light coat of mascara. Add a teensy pop of color with a soft blush and shimmery lip gloss, and you’re set.
Vickers used Jane Iredale Purepressed Blush in “Flawless,” Jane Iredale Puregloss in “White Tea,” and Salon 01 waterproof gel lip liner in “Naked” to add just a hint of color.
She also chose Salon 01 eye shadow in “Pink Water,” “Cashmere,” and “Bisque” to match the natural skin tones.

BEAUTY MAC Gold Glitter and Salon 01 Shadow Magnet Primer are all you need to go full glam.
IF YOU’RE IN THE MOOD FOR SOME-
thing more dramatic, you’re in luck. You don’t need to do much more. Armed with some more primer and a little bit of sparkle—Vickers used Mac Gold Glitter—you can pump up your eye game with ease. With the basic eye shadow already in place, dip your brush in the primer to help the glitter stick. Start from the outside corner of the eye and blend in toward the middle. “Taking the glitter over the entire eye would turn you into a disco ball, but by blending into the center, you create a sunset effect,” says Vickers. And yes, it is an entire bottle of glitter, so keep it far away from the kids.
LIP SERVICE Which color should you pair with that eye? When it comes to your pout, anything goes. Deep purples that are almost black, poppy red, and matte pink are go-to hues. Some of the braver souls can pull off unnatural colors like green or blue. If you’re short on time, simply throw some shade on that lip, and you’re good to go.
Pick your poison from Salon 01 Luxury Lipstick collection, including “Some Like It Hot,” “No Regrets,” and “Wicked.” IM SHOPS | 2016
