Modern, spacious, tailor-made, welcoming, and highly stylized—this year’s Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home combines cuttingedge design with personalized touches on a sprawling, 52-acre property in Zionsville.
“It was a very unique house from the beginning,” says builder Brad Bowman, owner of Indianapolis-based Homes by Design. From an expansive great room that opens onto a terrace overlooking the infinity-edge pool to a vintage boxing ring and luxe home theater on the lower level, this dwelling is made for entertaining and chock-full of custom

details to fit the homeowners’ bold tastes and individual interests. “They don’t want to be like everyone else,” Bowman says of his clients, a couple with three grown sons. “Every time they hear ‘This is standard,’ that’s kind of like a cuss word to them.” Planning for the home began in 2017. HBD worked with architect Steve Goldberg of Goldberg Design Group to create the plans for this contemporary structure. It includes five bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and ample room for entertainment. A six-car garage is ready to house all of the family vehicles. “They like modern, they like out of the box,” Bowman says of the future occupants. The architecture features large windows and sloping, angled roof lines. Bowman says the roof is unlike any he’s constructed, with a standing-seam metal roof line that goes straight up on one side, contributing to the avant-garde look. Cut limestone and lowmaintenance, pre-stained concrete siding cover the exterior, lending the home a cool, elegant, and high-end appearance.
/ R O O M TO G R O W THE HOMEOWNERS chose a generous northwestside parcel of land because they wanted space to expand over the years. The builder worked to add some elevation to different areas of the property to increase visual interest. Indianapolis-based P.J.E. Lawn Care & Landscaping put finishing touches on the lot. Future plans include adding an orchard and vineyard, and possibly a horse barn and an additional home. “If a homeowner wants to do [something], my first response is: ‘Let’s figure out how to do it,’” Bowman says. His clients gave him full trust to help realize the vision for their future home. Interior designer Deanna Whetstone, owner of Brownsburg-based Whetstone & Associates, echoed this sentiment. She collaborated closely with the builder, architect, and homeowners to flesh out the inside of the posh, spacious abode. “They started building this home because they have great imagination and great taste,”
SP EC I A L A DV E R T I SIN G S U P P L E M E N T T O IN D I A N A P O L I S M O N T H LY
Whetstone says. “This is just the beginning of what they hope to encompass on this property.” The homeowners took inspiration from dwellings in Australia and the SoHo neighborhood of New York City. The design combines rich walnut surfaces and natural materials; warm, acacia hardwood flooring; and a color theme of greens and aquas. “That’s a story throughout,” Whetstone says. “You’ll see that [palette] played out among almost the entire home.” Indianapolis-based PAH Upholstery Co. created custom furniture. While the overall vibe is modern, midcentury and Art Deco influences emerge in different areas. The second floor includes bedrooms for two of the couple’s sons, along with a media and gaming room. Despite a neutral color scheme, the first-floor master bedroom abounds with texture and details. “Everything is intentional, like the concrete, custom-glazed fireplace that is balanced by the fully upholstered wall,” Whetstone says. The bed matches the wall behind it, which has fully integrated light fixtures and nightstands. The master bathroom includes custom tile, a concrete tub, and illuminated onyx counters. The shower has five rain heads, plus a wall showerhead with a sound system. “You have to take your time to drink in the details,” Whetstone says of the master suite. “You can hang out there for a hot minute.”
/ WA R M R E C E P T I O N IN ADDITION TO comfortable sleeping quarters, the couple wanted an inviting space designed around their love of hosting large groups of friends. “It’s an extremely entertainment-driven house,” Whetstone says. Guests can see all the way to the backyard entertainment space from the oversized, 5-foot-by-12-foot front door with copper cladding, one of the details inspired by a home Down Under. “It’s made to be grand, it’s made to be used, it’s used to welcome people,” says Whetstone. The large great room, kitchen, dining, and entry spaces all interconnect. In addition to 12 chairs at the dining-room table, the kitchen and adjacent coffee bar supply extra seating. When it’s time to take the party outside,

retractable doors connect the great room to a back deck, exterior entertainment space, and pool area. “You’ve never seen a pool like this in Indiana,” Bowman says. The pool includes a hot tub with floating steps, a tanning ledge, and a grotto with water falling down below the deck. Porcelain pavers surround the water.
The lower level sets the stage for evenings with guests. The space features a bar with four TVs, a pizza oven, a conversation pit, and a vintage-inspired boxing ring. A refurbished 1890s billiards table adds interest and competitive opportunities, but a luxurious home theater is one of the main attractions. “There’s some gorgeous features,” says Whetstone, who likens the atmosphere to 2019 | DREAM HOME

a 1930s speakeasy with a nod to Art Deco. “Dark oak floors, exposed metal beams—a little industrial and a lot of pretty.” The theater features rich, red velvet draperies, but the green-and-aqua palette from the first floor weaves into the decor of the lower level as well. Whetstone worked to integrate high-tech fitness equipment into the retro retreat. She looked far and wide to procure a vintagelooking but functional boxing ring the homeowner wanted as a showpiece for the space.
/ KNOCK ON WOOD THE BOXING RING is just one of the many unique and luxurious elements of this showstopper home. Another is the front stairway, which is essentially a metal beam with floating treads made of rich hardwood. Walnut finishes abound throughout the house, appearing on doors, cabinets, countertops, and even the kitchen ceiling. “We’re calling it a ‘cloud,’” says Bowman, describing the sheets of walnut installed at different levels above the kitchen island. Lighting is suspended from and built into the overhead panels. Another distinctive feature is a specially crafted fireplace in the husband’s office that stands out not just for its sheer size, but also for its intricate personal details. The custommade surround serves as a defining element for the room. “To someone who doesn’t know him, you would think it’s just a beautiful carving. But if you did know him, you’ll see [representations of] his likes woven throughout,” Whetstone says. “If you know the homeowners, this house exudes their personality.” The mantel is one of the many rare, eyecatching decorations that serve as finishing touches. Not ones to settle for traditional canvases adorning the walls, the homeowners made bold choices, including a 35-foot installation that ties the upper and lower levels together, a 3-D sculpture attached to a wall, and images printed on metal or displayed behind glass. The pieces are part of what Bowman sees as the larger masterpiece of the home itself. “Seeing the finished product is the payoff,” he says. “These houses end up being like pieces of art at the end.”

“‘Normal,’ ‘typical,’ or ‘usual’—those aren’t the words the owners wanted to hear,” says Dream Home builder Brad Bowman of Homes by Design. “What they wanted to hear was ‘one-of-a-kind,’ ‘first-time,’ or ‘something different.’ They aren’t guided by what’s popular today. They think out of the box, which let Deanna and I stretch our wings a bit.”
And stretch their wings they did. Every item in the home is highly styled and customized, which required the Dream Home design team to spend as much time in the planning process as in the building process. “Everything in this house is intentional,” says interior designer Deanna Whetstone of Whetstone & Associates. “A designer looks at how people live, how they move in a space, and then creates that space around them. The owners wanted each space designed—not just decorated with furnishings.” This house is all about the architectural features, intricate details, and personalization. Even the ceiling vents are 4 feet long, like you’d see in a commercial building. “That makes the home look more modern,” Bowman says. “The modern look is all about having less trim. There’s no crown molding or fancy wood panels. It’s a cleaner, simpler look, with the details in the hardware, the lighting, the blinds—those kinds of things.” Common elements on the main level are walnut doors, acacia hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, square can lighting, and walls of glass that allow panoramic views of the property. Most rooms have 12-foot ceilings, but the great room soars to 22 1/2 feet high. 18

/ A GR AND ENTR ANCE THE CUSTOM WALNUT front door sets the tone for the entire house. Its pivot hinges and 6-foot push bar give it a contemporary appearance, while the copper cladding on one of the side panels and over the top of the door
shows Australian design inspiration. Then, there’s its massive size—5 feet by 10 1/2 feet. There is nothing dainty or diminutive about this home. Even the entry has a presence from the 6-foot, mixed-media chandelier from Trinity Lighting to the colorful, 10-foot-by-14-foot

A Great Dane sculpture keeps watch over the home’s great room and entry.
Art Nouveau rug from Joseph’s Oriental Rug Imports in shades of aquamarine, red, green, and teal. Aqua is the wife’s favorite, and these colors are repeated throughout the house in different ways. Alongside the front door ascends a switchback staircase that goes to the upper and lower levels. It is a monorail-beam design with floating walnut treads. The stair rail was created using cable in a tight, V-shaped pattern. The same treatment serves as an accent bordering the loft above the great room. “As you walk through the front door, you are entering the heart of the home, which is the large great room, the kitchen, and the dining room,” Whetstone explains. “All of them are right there to greet you. It’s all very connected.” The great room is light and airy with a bank of windows and glass-paneled doors on the back wall opposite the entry. The 24-foot retractable doors fold to connect the great room to the outdoor living space. “This area was challenging because we
really had to build a space and scale it properly,” Whetstone says. The 15-foot, three-sided gas fireplace from Dealers Wholesale is one of the architectural focal points of the great room. It is flanked by staggered wood panels that make it look massive. The sleek, clean lines of the hearth complement the overall design of this area. It was also one of the most ambitious elements of the room, taking months to determine the engineering necessary to support its weight. “That’s just one thing that makes this house different from anything else,” Bowman says. “I take a lot of pride in my houses looking different from one house to another. Homes by Design is all about the details.” This hearth and the fireplaces in the master bedroom and lower level are from the Stellar Hearth Products Galaxy Series. They feature LED ember lights, big-flame presentation, home automation, and Safe-T-Touch glass. The cool-to-the-touch surface enables combustible finishes to be used in the surrounds. This fireplace was given a refined,
textured walnut and natural limestone finish by Architectural Brick and Tile. “This is the only fireplace line that runs cool enough that you can actually use natural stone as a design element in the bottom of the fireplace,” says Bill Michalak, an NFIcertified hearth-design specialist with Dealers Wholesale. The fireplace shares the wall with a largescale, asymmetrical wall covering in a goldmedallion print. Another conversation piece is the S-shaped sectional in a striking aqua-and-blue houndstooth check. Custom made by PAH Upholstery Co., the sectional is multi-sided to allow for several groupings of visitors. Rounding out the great room are a pair of teal swivel chairs and a 60-inch round table and five chairs covered in a modular check in shades of aquamarine, green, gold, and white. These furnishings are from Kravet Furniture. “This room is just so interactive,” Whetstone says. “This will be a true gathering room and not just a pretty space.” 2019 | DREAM HOME

/ FINE DINING THE HOMEOWNERS ’ main criterion for the dining room was that it had to be large enough for entertaining. Not only does the custom-designed, antique-white table seat 12 comfortably, but the room is easily expandable since the space is open to the entry. A combination of benches and chairs in a bronze, chevron cut velvet contrasts with the table from Kravet Furniture. From the multifaceted sphere chandelier in shades of bronze, silver, and gold from Trinity Lighting to the textured wool rug from Joseph’s Oriental Rug Imports, this room is a blend of soothing neutrals. The curtains, which are hung on a motorized drapery rod linked to the home’s automation system, combine three neutral-patterned sheers. “As you look side to side, the pattern will change,” says Caryn O’Sullivan, owner of Drapery Street, which provided the window treatments. “You can close them for a bit of privacy or sun control, but they won’t block the light.” The glossy, jade-green lacquer and Lucite sideboard from ModShop and the centerpieces add pops of color to the setting. The kitchen and dining room share an accent wall wrapped in veneered limestone that also appears on two columns in the living area. It is the same material used on the home’s exterior. “By bringing these natural materials from the outside inside, these 21-foot, stone-clad columns add to the home’s grandeur with a modern flair of eternal elegance,” says Kelly Cheslyn, vice president of Architectural Brick and Tile, the supplier of the limestone.
The dining room is a mix of neutral fabrics and surfaces with a few pops of rich color on the tabletop and sideboard.
/ HAUTE CUISINE THE INDUSTRIAL- STYLE kitchen is uber-functional, with a contemporary, European flair. The appliances were the driving factor and the starting point of the room’s design. Miele appliances in Graphite Grey were selected for ease of food preparation and superior functionality. “That fit with the intention for the house,” Whetstone says. All appliances are equipped with M Touch innovative displays and MasterChef automatic programs.

“Everything is built in,” says Matt Fryman, sales consultant for Lee Supply, the appliance supplier. “You touch the screen to select what you’re cooking, put your food in, and let it do its thing.” A wall of cabinets houses the 36-inch
freezer and refrigerator, the microwave, oven, warming drawer, and combi-steam oven. They are painted gray with a pearlescent finish that is buffed out to match the appliances. The other kitchen cabinetry, two islands, and coffee-bar storage are made of

black walnut. The European-style cabinets feature slab doors with flat fronts and a variety of different handles. “This is on the cutting edge of what you’ll see in Indianapolis,” says Steve Campbell of Trillium Cabinet & Design. Another thing you don’t often see is matched grain on each individual cabinet. Switch a couple drawers and you’ll notice it because the grain patterning in the walnut won’t line up. Typically, the grain on cabinet doors is vertical and on drawers, horizontal. Here, it’s all vertical. “This gives it a very uniform look,” Campbell says. All the walnut cabinetry throughout the house is grain-matched. The six-burner range with a built-in griddle sits below a professional-style hood, which adds to the industrial feel in the kitchen. The larger island will serve as the foodprep area. Its walnut base is topped with an angular piece of gray granite finished with a waterfall edge. ter. The same granite is used on part of the second island, but the must-see feature is the island’s 8-foot, cantilevered, custom concrete countertop by Jeff Ware Concrete that will function as the kitchen table. Comfort was key for the five bar stools around the counter. From Sunpan, they have navy leather seats that complement the color scheme of the upholstered pieces in the great room. More than 30 lights hover overhead in the kitchen and adjoining coffee bar. All emanate from a floating, walnut-paneled cloud suspended from the ceiling. Icicle pendants hang over the main island; sleek, LED lighting above the concrete surface; and aqua, gold, and clear-glass fixtures atop the coffee bar. The lights are positioned at varying heights. Besides eliminating the need for can lighting, the cloud fills in the space between the 12-foot ceiling and the 8-foot cabinetry. The attached pantry is a room in itself. The pearlescent gray cabinetry boasts beautiful walnut countertops. But it’s the Big Chill retro-style refrigerator in turquoise from Lee Supply that steals the show.

A COLORFUL mosaic mural by Natural Stone & Tile depicting a woman sipping a cappuccino leaves no doubt that this area adjacent to the kitchen is dedicated to caffeination. And who wouldn’t want a cozy space to sit and enjoy a cup of joe in the morning or afternoon? A coffee bar had been on the wife’s wish list for a long time. Now, it’s a reality. This personal cafe features a built-in Miele coffeemaker. The furnishings—a kidneyshaped sofa covered with gold cut velvet and metallic relief and a two-tone bronze leather circular ottoman—are lighthearted and comfy. Both are from Kravet Furniture. A red-and-aqua Tibetan rug from Joseph’s Oriental Rug Imports defines the space. An 18-foot retractable door opens the space up to the outdoor living area, allowing the homeowners and their guests to venture out and take in the poolside views.
The curved sofa in the coffee bar is a cozy spot to sit and sip a hot, fresh-brewed beverage.

/ O F F I C E S PAC E A FEW STEPS UP from the home’s front entry, the husband’s office showcases charcoal and black used in innovative ways. “I wanted it to be masculine and unique like the owner,” Whetstone says. “When you walk in this room, you’ll know it’s a man’s study.” And what’s a study without a fireplace? In this case, it’s a 6-foot-wide Isokern fireplace framed by a custom concrete molding. A 10-foot-by-6-foot, three-panel wood carving depicting events with special meaning for the owner surrounds the fireplace. Charcoal-gray built-in bookcases line the walls. Check out the 49 sets of bookends—all different—on the shelves. A storage closet, hidden behind one bookcase, houses all the elements of a working office—keeping them at the owner’s fingertips, but out of sight. The wall treatment features charcoal-gray, suede-covered panels between the wainscoting. The walnut doors are covered with leather-upholstered panels. The room’s trim is charcoal gray, unlike the walnut trim used elsewhere on the main level of the home.
A bold, beaded light fixture is the focal point in her workroom.
The furnishings are simple, but keep with the scale of the room. There’s a black-leather sofa from Noir Furniture and a sizable blackstained desk that measures more than 7 feet wide by 4 feet deep. It’s a personal, inviting retreat for the man of the house.
/ PRETT Y IN PINK IF THE HUSBAND’S study conveys masculinity, the wife’s office is decidedly feminine— but functional—with a midcentury-modern feel to it. Gold and pink dominate in her command center, located off the back hall. “This is all about being a girl,” Whetstone says. “We wanted a bit of a throwback feel in this room. She liked midcentury modern before it was cool. She’ll like it when the trend is gone.” While the flooring for the rest of the main level is made of acacia wood, the surface here is hand-screened wood tiles with playful, gilded polka dots by Mirth Studio. The storage by Trillium Cabinet & Design is similar in style to the kitchen cabinetry, but it’s painted in Rose of Sharon from Sherwin-Williams. A counter-height, white-gloss laminate worktable sits across from cabinets topped with black granite in an iconic atomic motif from Mont Surfaces and installed by Cathedral Marble & Granite. An aqua chandelier from Trinity Lighting is the finishing pop of color that makes this office her own.

/ BOW WOW! OFF THE SERVICE entrance is a space that could technically be called a mud room. But it’s so much more than that. It houses a special spot designated for Max, the family’s beloved rescue pooch. The cabinetry features an integrated dog bed and kennel, as well as pull-out bins for Max’s food. The cabinetry is painted in the aptly named color Intense Teal from Sherwin-Williams. A cantilevered walnut bench is tucked under the window, so family members can kick off their shoes and store them underneath, out of the way. The bench is complemented by several custom walnut wall hooks. “They are intended to be a hybrid of form and function,” Whetstone says. “They’re pretty whether or not something is hanging from them.” Liquid Tapestries created Max-approved artwork for the walls. He gives his room an enthusiastic two paws up.
The family’s best friend feels right at home in his vibrant, color-coordinated space.

Much like the communal spaces in the 2019 Dream Home, the bedrooms are modern, functional, and integrated to complement the occupants’ lifestyles. These chambers reflect the individual styles of the family members who slumber there.
/ MASTER CLASS THE OWNERS ’ BEDROOM suite is set apart from the rest of the house in its own secluded niche. Akin to the other rooms on the main level, it has vaulted ceilings and unadorned windows. It also uses some of the same materials, such as walnut and concrete. “This is the most neutral section of the house, hands down,” says interior designer Deanna Whetstone of Whetstone & Associates. “But it is also the most intricate in detail and design. There are about 50 different neutrals here, and when they are used in harmony, we can use texture and design to add interest instead of color.” You can’t miss the 7-foot linear fireplace from Dealers Wholesale surrounded by floorto-ceiling concrete. The surface is glazed to match the neutral-patterned fabric used to upholster the wall behind the bed. The same material is repeated in the upholstered headboard and accents in the bed covering. Integrated reading lights are placed above walnut nightstands that cantilever from the wall and function as charging stations for electronics. A neutral, geometric rug from Joseph’s Oriental Rug Imports covers the acacia hardwood floors, and electronically controlled blinds are nestled into walnut valances. All of that can be accommodated in the loft media room, a common area shared by the homeowners’ other two sons. Their upper-level bedrooms are private retreats—spaces where they can relax and express their personalities. These chambers have king-sized beds, attached bathrooms, and furniture that will easily transition them from their teenage to adult years. Everything will work as well in the future—when the sons are visiting with their spouses—as it does today. / W H AT L I E S B E N E AT H A STRIKING 20-foot-by-7-foot custom installation by Leftbank Art is the first item to catch the eye when descending the staircase from the main floor down into a chic cellar, logically leading viewers toward a conversation pit that serves as a casual family gathering spot. As the angle of view shifts, so does the 2-D image, morphing like magic from a contemporary piece into a bucolic rural landscape scene for a touch of Midwestern terroir. “The lower level has really taken on a life all its own,” says interior designer Deanna Whetstone of Whetstone & Associates. “Everything in this space exudes the sophistication of a 1930s speakeasy with wool fabrics and upholstery, shag carpets from Custom Floors of Carmel, and dark-stained oak, but it’s all outfitted with the most advanced modern technology. We were really trying to achieve a vintage vibe and give people different incentives to want to spend time down here.” To coordinate with the rest of the home, the bottom floor is awash in variations on the
same oxidized aqua and rich green shades— the wife’s preferred color palette—that permeate the rooms and decor of the upper floors, effectively softening the more traditionally masculine-leaning features. “She often gave a ‘this is his space’ answer as we were creating the lower level, but her input was essential to achieving the finished results,” Whetstone mentions. Builder Brad Bowman of Homes by Design staggered the floor levels in the basement for visual interest, going lower for the conversation pit and higher in the fitness room and game area. “Our biggest challenge throughout the construction of the entire home was the high water table on this totally flat lot following this year’s extremely rainy spring and early summer,” he explains. “There was just nowhere for all that water to go, so we had to install a drainage system that ran all the way out to the road and build the house up out of the ground. I’d say we probably brought in more than 500 loads of dirt.” Fortunately, once the water and ensuing mud issues were resolved, construction progress was able to proceed full steam ahead.
/ L I G H T S , C A M E R A , AC T I O N THE SPACE BEHIND the art wall opens into an extravagant home theater. Sumptuous, custom nailhead-trimmed chairs with individual footstools have been upholstered in lush, merlot-hued velvet to match the draperies that cover the walls. “The velvet drapes operate on a motorized rod, and Deanna selected the fabric, which is this amazing Osborne & Little designer velvet,” says Caryn O’Sullivan, owner of Drapery Street in Carmel. “It’s a super-rich color with a blackout lining, so if you want to watch a movie, you simply press a button to close the drapes and it creates a very intimate, authentic movie-theater experience.” Lifestyle Integrations oversaw installation of all the home’s audio-visual elements, including the commercial-grade Sony laser projector and 206-inch screen in the viewing room, as well as a Klipsch speaker system, Lutron lighting and shades, and RTI wholehome automation package. “The last Dream Home I worked on was back in 2008 or 2009—not long after the first iPhones were released—and the technology

has come such a long way since then,” explains Lifestyle Integrations president Chad Gray. “Home automation isn’t so rare anymore, but many people still don’t appreciate just how much the ability to control all of your home’s functions—the thermostat, the security features, the lighting, the electronics, the appliances—through one interface can take everything to a whole new level.” Building the mechanical racks to accommodate and integrate so many of the home’s systems at one time was no small feat. “There are actually three different racks in this home, and each wire that’s installed has to be individually cut and made to fit in its own specific space,” Gray says. “With the attention to detail that was required for this one aspect, it probably took us somewhere between 14 and 16 weeks total to put it all together.” “Normally, there would be 300 to 400 light switches alone in a house like this, with the residents constantly trying to figure out which switch turns on what light,” Gray continues. “Here, we’ve been able to design a comprehensive program so that when the
homeowners set everything to their preferences, they can simply hit one button to control the entire environment.”
/ LO U N G E AC T BEHIND THE HOME THEATER is an expansive bar area that features its own dedicated pizza oven, pendant lighting and sconces sourced from Nick Allen (rumor has it that Lisa Vanderpump of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules fame is a big fan), and a series of four televisions strategically mounted across the back wall. “We wanted to provide the versatility of a multi-unit display where you can watch different ball games simultaneously, but we also wanted to get away from the typical sportsbar feel and create visual interest by positioning the TVs in an asymmetrical pattern,” Gray says. “It’s set up like an aquarium in a synchronized style—you could realistically watch a fish swim all the way across the array through one TV into the next,” Bowman adds.
Banquettes with round tables embossed in a sunburst pattern supplement the bar seating.

A custom boxing ring and restored billiards table provide stylish diversions for company.
/ FLEX APPEAL ESCHEWING THE TRADITIONAL home-gym layout of a few pieces of exercise equipment lined up in a mirrored studio-style space, Bowman and Whetstone instead worked with the homeowners to construct a 14-foot square boxing ring—complete with punching bags—in the fitness room. An elliptical machine, a treadmill, two large wall televisions, and a quirky set of old-fashioned metal folding chairs monogrammed for each member of the family fill out the workout area. “We began by removing a wall to make room for the ring,” Whetstone describes. “In the 27 years I’ve been practicing design, I’ve never done a boxing ring before. It was definitely a learning curve for me, but I do love taking on a challenge.” A wood partition delineates the exercise space from an entertainment area that houses an antique bowling game and a pinball machine, along with a gorgeously restored 9-foot pool table originally manufactured by the Brunswick Factory in Cincinnati in the late 1800s—a guaranteed conversation starter.
“This particular table was in pretty bad shape when we bought it, as many of these old antique tables often are,” says Steve Orner, president of Orner Billiards. “We don’t get much call to restore antique tables like this these days because it’s so easy now for modern American manufacturers to just copy the styles using new materials.” After Orner acquired the table through a private purchase several years ago, restoration expert Randy Burke got to work on it, sanding and restaining the rosewood rails; inserting the maple inlays with surgical precision; and installing new pockets, leathers, cloth, and rubber. At first, the homeowners had planned to buy a reproduction antique pool table for use in the space, but they changed direction after they got a look at what Burke was doing with this piece. “This table is definitely a collectors’ item,” Orner mentions. “On every antique table, there’s a little golden tag or foil that details the dates and other information about when and where the table was made. I wish this table could talk!” 2019 | DREAM HOME

They say a man’s home is his castle, but trust us when we tell you that you’ve never seen a moat like this before.
/ ALL THE RIGHT ANGLES WITH A TOPOGRAPHY that manages to coax gently rolling hills out of formerly flat Indiana farmland, this 52-acre spread makes a stunning first impression on approach. “We actually wound up siting the house itself 100 yards away from the original planned location to give the whole property a more spacious feel,” says Dream Home builder Brad Bowman of Homes by Design. “We like to stay flexible and let the houses speak to us as they take shape. They don’t always turn out exactly the way we plan, but the changes that evolve along the way always make the project better in the end.” Composed of large-scale Techo-Bloc cement pavers, the driveway is groundbreaking in more ways than one. “We’re the first job to use this product in the American market,” points out Phil Ennis, owner of P.J.E. Lawn Care & Landscaping. “It comes with a 25-year residential warranty and it’s salt-resistant, which is definitely a big advantage in this region.” In addition to the pavers, the base of the home’s exterior is ensconced in native limestone fabricated in Southern Indiana and sourced from Architectural Brick and Tile. Above the limestone, low-maintenance, rainscreen siding made of fiber-reinforced cement panels protects the structure from the elements. The material is manufactured to resemble wood, but has more durability.

We wanted to make it feel a little more Indiana.” Purposing the acreage is a work in progress with an apple orchard and a vineyard still to come. this is 30 feet by 90 feet,” Bowman says. “Homeowners usually single out one feature to highlight, but this one has a grotto, a seating area, a hot tub, an infinity edge, and a half-dozen fire features.” “This is definitely one of the biggest residential pools in Central Indiana,” echoes Mike McGhee, owner of Mike McGhee & Associates. “All the details really flow together nicely and allow plenty of space for activity. sourced from Italy that cost more to fly in than they did to purchase. “There’s no sealing required, and they don’t need pressure-washing,” Ennis says. “We wanted to give the homeowners something that would be easy to clean and maintain over the long run.”
The pool bath is a mix of artful materials in a whimsical, retro motif.
With access off the garage, a bathroom and changing area transitions guests from the pool to the main house with a customprinted Beach Blanket Bingo–themed mural, midcentury-modern tiles from Architectural Brick and Tile, slip-resistant black slate floors, and elements of the same aqua tones that inform the color palette throughout the rest of the home. team and I put the brakes on. Two weeks later, we presented an entirely new plan for this resort-style pool that met all their needs, and we hit a home run.” Although the design process began nearly two years ago, the actual build and installation ended up being a race to the finish after a rough winter and rainy spring repeatedly caused construction delays. “What was supposed to be a six-month timeline ended up being a 60-day window to get all the physical work done,” Ennis explains. Navigating the complicated set of logistics
needed to accommodate the overall pool setup proved another challenge. “There are so many parts of this project that have to work together—the suspended metal paneling with lighting on the back side of the pool, the infinity edge, the grotto with a glass ball coming out of the front, the fire pit in the middle of the pool,” Ennis says. “The underground engineering to support all those features was extremely tricky to build.” “I’m really proud we’ve been able to hit all of our deadlines, and I think the pool will speak for itself when everyone sees it,” McGhee concludes.

The 2019 Dream Home is more than just a tour to showcase high-end, luxury products, design, and craftsmanship. It is an opportunity to give back to the community. To that end, Indianapolis Monthly is building a relationship with Children’s Bureau, Inc., the charity partner for this year’s event.
/ ON A MISSION OPERATING UNDER THE BELIEF that giving kids chances to succeed creates stronger communities, Children’s Bureau has served the Indianapolis area since 1851. It was initially launched as the Widows and Orphans Friends’ Society, but has evolved and adapted to changing societal needs affecting families. “Children’s Bureau’s mission is to preserve families and protect the future of Indiana’s children,” says Annie Martinez, Vice President of Communications & Development for the organization. “We believe every child should have a healthy family. Our priority is to keep families out of the child-welfare system, and we do. Our prevention programs teach families what makes healthy people, so children grow into healthy adults. Our intervention work teaches families how to eliminate the things and behaviors that have created instability and unhealthy environments for children. Our goal is to keep families together when at all possible. Because that can’t always happen, we recruit and strengthen foster and adoptive families. Our older youth services team stands beside youth aging out

Children’s Bureau served 40,777 children from across Indiana in 2018.” The private nonprofit takes a four-pronged approach to serving its constituents: • PREVENT. Empower families with professional support and community resources to eliminate issues that lead to entry into the child-welfare system. • INTERVENE . Work with families who find themselves in the system to accomplish the required goals to keep their children. • PROTECT. Recruit and strengthen foster and adoptive homes. • SUPPORT. ALL PROCEEDS from Dream Home 2019 ticket sales go directly to Children’s Bureau to provide financial support for programs such as Community Partners for Child Safety, On My Way Pre-K, Child Care and Development Fund, Father Engagement, and Post-Adoptive Services, among others. “The Dream Home provides an amazing opportunity to communicate the work and impact of Children’s Bureau,” says Martinez. “It is also a terrific way to engage new and existing volunteers while informing the community of the services available to those who might be in need of them.” “The proceeds from the Dream Home will be used to address gaps in services,” she continues. “This includes beds for kids, birthday parties for the children at the children’s shelter and the Rachel Glick Courage Center, items needed for a parent starting a new job, support to kids who have aged out of foster care, clothes and shoes for children, and so much more.” Children’s Bureau representatives will be on hand at the Dream Home to provide information about its projects and plans, the positive effect it has in the community, and opportunities to volunteer and get involved with the organization. “We are excited to use this [event] to inform, engage and impact the companies involved, attendees, volunteers, and readers. We also can’t wait for the kids in residence to see the home!” says Martinez.
