It is our pleasure to welcome you to this historic Tudor property located in the Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood. We hope that you will enjoy this experience as your visit continues the tradition of “The Country’s Longest Running Show House Event.”
St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild (SMHG) members, designers, and landscapers spend months laying the groundwork for each Show House. In January, we took possession of the property and the work began. This year’s 25 design and landscape firms bring their designs to life by transforming empty rooms into masterpieces and refreshing outside areas into lush gardens. While respecting the heritage and style of this historic residence, our designers look to current trends that will accommodate a modern-day active family.
As you tour the house and grounds, please follow along in this program. The areas are listed, numbered, and described in the order in which you will see them. Located within the program, you will find designer information, paint colors, names of artists, and acknowledgements from the designers. We hope you will find an area or two that inspires you to go home and give one of your own rooms a fresh look. Of course, you can always make an appointment with one of our amazing designers or landscapers!
The Guild members, our dedicated designers, and talented landscape professionals make this tradition possible. Joining us in this effort are many loyal businesses, vendors, contractors, and all those who work diligently behind the scenes. We encourage you to look at the businesses that have supported us and hope you will consider patronizing their companies. Without their support, the Guild would not be able to carry out a project of this scope to benefit Eskenazi Health.
St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild’s mission is to raise funds for the programs and services of Eskenazi Health which offers a Level I Trauma Center available to everyone in the community. The men and women of Eskenazi Health provide superior heath care for all, regardless of financial situation. We are proud to support Eskenazi Health and its contribution to the entire community.
As you explore the beautifully decorated rooms, remember that many of the items are available for purchase. Contact individual designers and landscapers for more information.
After your tour of the house and grounds, we invite you to visit our Flower Shop and our Maggie’s Hoosier Marketplace featuring products from Indiana small businesses.
Thank you for supporting the 62nd Annual Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. We hope you enjoy the tour and make this a yearly spring tradition.
Everyday barriers such as reliable transportation, language and employment prevent many young families from accessing care throughout Central Indiana. Smiles like this one remind us that the work to remove these barriers is worth the investment.
Eskenazi Health was recently named Indiana’s #1 hospital for community benefit and health equity by the Lown Institute. Thanks in part to community partners and philanthropy, we are helping families get beyond barriers.

To the Women of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, On behalf of Eskenazi Health and Eskenazi Health Foundation, congratulations on the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. Since its inception in 1907, the Guild has generously supported Eskenazi Health in its mission to bring high-quality, equitable care to the people throughout Central Indiana. In over a century, the Guild has donated more than $14 million in an effort to provide this care. It is such generous support that enables Eskenazi Health to continue as a leader in our community.
This year’s Decorators’ Show House and Gardens will support Eskenazi Health’s John & Kathy Ackerman Mental Health Professional Development Center. The Center is a partnership between Eskenazi Health and local universities, which will allow for improved training for students, an opportunity for Eskenazi Health to identify quality candidates for employment who will already be familiar with Eskenazi Health, and establishment of a sustainable mental health workforce pipeline.
The Guild has previously made generous donations in support of a number of Eskenazi Health programs benefitting providers, patients and the general public. It is through these programs that the presence of the Guild is felt by so many. St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild’s example of leadership and philanthropy has left an undeniable mark on the care provided by Eskenazi Health.
Congratulations on your remarkable transformation of the 62nd historic Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. Eskenazi Health and Eskenazi Health Foundation look forward to our continued partnership with St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild. We are excited as our partnership will continue to aid us in providing high-quality, patient-centered health care to those most in need throughout our community.
With deepest gratitude and respect,
Lisa Harris, M.D. Ernest Vargo II, CFRE Chief Executive OfficerPresident & Chief Executive Officer Eskenazi HealthEskenazi Health FoundationA good night’s sleep doesn’t happen often for Sherry Mast, so when she woke up on the morning of Aug. 20, 2021, after a restful evening’s slumber, she had every reason to believe it would be a good day. It almost wasn’t.
As was her morning custom, the mother of two and grandmother of five, started her daily routine by making a cup of coffee when suddenly everything took an abrupt turn for the worse.
“I went to make coffee in my coffee maker, and I couldn’t make sense of it,” she said. “I couldn’t figure out how to do it, so I picked up my iPad to look for instructions. I could see the words, but I couldn’t comprehend them.”
A retired nurse, living in Greenfield, Indiana since 2017, Sherry and her husband, who was out of town at the time, live in an in-law suite adjacent to her son, Justin, the emergency preparedness and response manager with Eskenazi Health. Sherry quickly found Justin’s wife, Jessica, and told her something was wrong, so she called Justin who said they should rush to the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital as soon as possible.
Justin was there to greet them at the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department, where he told them to get checked in while he parked their car.
“Jessica and I walked up to the check-in desk, and this is where I see a miracle. There was nobody in line to report in, which I feel is pretty unusual,” Sherry said. “They immediately got me into a room. I remember trying to talk to the nurse who was trying to start my IVs.”
Sherry began an exhaustive battery of exploratory tests and a CT scan before a clot was discovered in her left carotid and middle cerebral arteries. The left carotid artery is the second main branch that arises directly off the aorta. The carotid arteries and their intracranial branches such as the middle cerebral arteries carry blood and oxygen to the brain, head and face. A clot or blockage in these vessels causes serious, if not fatal, complications.
The last thing Sherry remembers prior to waking up four hours later in the ICU was a group of doctors standing around a computer plotting a course of action, which included emergency neuroendovascular surgery (a minimally invasive type of brain surgery) to try to get the clot out.
“I had total blockage in both the lower and upper part of my brain that was causing my symptoms. They went in through the right side of my groin. Dr. Juan Tejada (an Eskenazi Health Neurointerventional Radiology specialist) later told me he in essence played a video game in my head to get the blood flow back in my brain,” she said. “He had to
work inside the upper part of my brain first to get the clot out of the way because they saw that’s where the circulation was cut off. Afterwards, my husband and I looked at the videos of the surgery and you could see there was no blood flow in those veins, and after he removed the clot that was blocking them, you could see the blood flow rush back. Then Dr. Tejada went into my carotid where there was a large blockage and he did the same thing there, and my artery kind of went limp, so he put a stent in there to repair that.”
As Sherry regained consciousness following the procedure, she opened her eyes to see the most important people in the world to her, immediately recognizing her sons and husband.
“It didn’t take long for hospital staff members to get me started with all the neurological testing by making me say certain words, stick out my tongue, lift my arms and all that kind of stuff. After I got back in the room in the early evening and up until 11 p.m., they were checking my neurological signs every half hour. Staff couldn’t believe how well I was talking and how well I could remember.”
As Sherry remembers it, her stroke happened on a Friday, and as frightening and dangerous as it was, she was on her way home the following Monday. Her healing process happened so quickly that there was no need to schedule any follow-up physical therapy sessions for her. Sherry believes the spot-on advice she received during the morning of her stroke was instrumental in her surviving and healing quickly.
“I’d like to stress the importance of when you begin to feel some symptoms and something’s not right, not to mess around,” she said. “If Jessica would’ve taken me somewhere else, I would’ve had the complete work-up there and then they would’ve transferred me to Eskenazi Health and hours would’ve been wasted. I think it’s better that when something doesn’t seem right, please don’t just say, ‘Well, this will go away,’ because time is so valuable in getting treatment.
“When I think of what it could’ve been, it’s a miracle. It’s a God thing that I’m still here. As I have told many of my friends, there was a stroke team waiting for me at Eskenazi Health, and they knew exactly what to do. I’ll always be grateful for all they did for me.”
The Eskenazi Health Stroke Center urges people to be aware of stroke symptoms and to B.E.F.A.S.T. in their response by checking a person’s balance, eyes, face, arms and speech, before it’s time to call 911. To learn more about Eskenazi Health’s certified advanced primary stroke center, please visit www.eskenazihealth.edu/stroke-center.
given annually by St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild and sponsored by the Versiti Blood Center, honors management-level members of the Eskenazi Health team who uphold the tradition of excellence in healthcare. These innovative, creative, and dedicated recipients were selected among many exceptional nominees from Eskenazi Health.
St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild and Versiti Blood Center of Indiana announced Crissy Lough, DNP, and Maria Robles, M.D., as recipients of the Achievement in Medicine (AIM) Award. The AIM Award honors a physician or professional of the Eskenazi Health team who upholds the tradition of excellence in health care.
Lough serves as the chief of risk, regulatory and patient safety at Eskenazi Health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lough’s knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory affairs, risk management, and experience leading the Eskenazi Health Office of Patient Experience served as a guiding voice for the organization. From the beginning, Lough was determined to protect frontline staff and find ways for patients to stay connected to their families through her coordination of visitation programs during the pandemic. She was consistently on-call, handling complex visitation challenges for patients at the end of life and in other sensitive situations. A leader whose work is often done behind the scenes, Lough was recognized for her compassion, honesty, loyalty, integrity, determination and respect.
Lough has worked at Eskenazi Health for 28 years, starting as a student nurse extern in the labor and delivery unit and working her way to a manager of the department. She transitioned to Risk Management in 2003 and now oversees risk management, patient safety, regulatory, Office of Patient Experience, Infection Prevention & Control, Magnet journey and Sterile Processing.
During her tenure at Eskenazi Health, Lough has led many regulatory visits, including five Triennial Accreditation Surveys by The Joint Commission. She currently serves on Eskenazi Health’s COVID-19 management team and on the Indiana Healthcare Association Council for Quality and Patient Safety. Lough was recognized with the Glenn T. Troyer Outstanding Risk Manager of the Year Award from the Indiana Society for Healthcare Risk Management in 2013.
Dr. Robles has been with Eskenazi Health since 2011, and most recently served as chief provider executive of Eskenazi Health Center West 38th Street for five years. As leader of this health center, she not only cared for countless patients through the COVID-19 pandemic but also advocated for those in addiction treatment to continue to receive their medications when health centers were unable to electronically prescribe narcotics.
Dr. Robles has worked to address the addiction crisis by providing training for the prescribing of buprenorphine and working closely with providers in the outpatient and inpatient setting along with the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department and Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center through the Eskenazi Health Substance Use Disorder Steering Committee. She also created avenues for learners to participate in the care of people with opioid use disorder including an internal medicine resident rotation, an adolescent fellow experience, a medical student rotation and the Addiction Awareness Student Interest Group with Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Robles tirelessly advocates for patients with substance use disorders and often helps provide knowledge and support to other providers seeking care for their patients. She was recognized for embodying the mission of Eskenazi Health and doing so much for those in need. Her efforts have worked to reduce stigma and provide non-judgmental, high-quality care for people with substance use disorder.

St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is a volunteer organization comprised of dedicated women committed to raising funds for programs and services of Eskenazi Health. For the past 62 years, this has been accomplished by hosting the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. The proceeds support some of our most vulnerable neighbors.
Members attend meetings, serve on various committees, work house duty shifts during the house transformation, docent during tours, and perform administrative duties for the Guild. While working together to raise funds for Eskenazi Health, life-long friendships develop.

St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, Inc. is a volunteer organization committed to raising funds for the services and programs of Eskenazi Health.
was founded in 1907 by five women who formed a nonsectarian guild to provide care and support to Indianapolis’ City Hospital patients through direct service and fundraising projects. The Guild’s mission is the same today; only the name of the hospital has changed. Starting as City Hospital in 1855, the hospital has been known as Indianapolis General Hospital, Marion County General Hospital, Wishard Memorial Hospital, and today we know it as Eskenazi Health. People often ask how the name of the Guild was chosen. St. Margaret, the daughter of ninth-century Prince Edward of Scotland, worked with the sick, orphans, and the poor. The Guild’s name reflects the spirit of her work.
Every year since 1962, St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has organized the refurbishing of a classic home, opened the home for a two-week public tour, and donated the proceeds of funds raised from the tour to Eskenazi Health. Since the Guild’s founding in 1907, it has raised over $14 million for Eskenazi Health, supporting the patients and professionals at our city’s public hospital.
Proceeds from the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens allowed SMHG to provide equipment and vital programming for patients at Eskenazi Health. With your help, the Guild has funded the Burn Unit, departmental renovations, sponsored two mobile mammography clinics, initiated the Mother’s Milk Bank, and provided “Protecting Our Children” materials. SMHG has provided summer group therapy at Midtown Children’s Center, underwritten childbirth classes focusing on areas of highest infant mortality, and supported the Haven of Hope. The Guild has helped build raised garden beds for patients’ use at the Sky Garden, supported Healthy Me for children, funded the Limestone Falls at the Commonground, and purchased vans for Eskenazi Midtown Mental Health. Funds raised also provided support for the Sandra Eskenazi Center for Brain Care Innovation and the Center for Nursing Excellence at Eskenazi Health, an innovative program focusing on recruiting and training quality nurses. In 2020, the Guild supported the Eskenazi Health COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund, allowing Eskenazi Health to serve the people of Marion County in the midst of the global pandemic. This year is the second year of a four-year pledge of $1 million to support The Eskenazi Health Behavioral Health Academy, a partnership between Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center and local universities to increase the number of dual-licensed clinical social workers and clinical addiction counselors in Central Indiana to address mental health and addiction issues.
St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is proud to be one of the pioneer volunteer groups in the City of Indianapolis. We are grateful to the designers, landscapers, sponsors, individuals, corporations, and donors of in-kind services who make this annual event possible.
The 2023 Decorators’ Show House and Gardens wishes to acknowledge the memory of our treasured friends who served St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild for many years. Their contributions to the Guild are greatly appreciated and help us improve lives in the community. We will remember them always.

The residence at 57 East 57th Street is located within the boundaries of some of Indianapolis’ most respected neighborhood organizations. They include the Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association, the Meridian Street Foundation, and Midtown Indy. The land on which the home was built was originally planned as three separate lots in the Sillery Subdivision of Meridian Street Woods. The original homeowners bought all three lots, thereby creating a property of half an acre with yards on both sides of the residence.
The architect who designed the home was Willard C. Osler (1885-1978). He designed many residences in the Golden Hill, Mapleton Fall Creek, and Meridian-Kessler neighborhoods. Among the larger projects designed by Osler were Trinity Episcopal Church, Second Presbyterian Church, and First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Construction of the brick Tudor residence began in 1927. It was completed in 1928. The project was overseen by civil engineer Charles Latham Sr. (18811940). Latham specialized in residential projects, building upscale homes for prominent families, primarily in the Golden Hill and Meridian-Kessler neighborhoods. The subject home contains approximately 6,670 square feet on three levels. It originally had 7 bedrooms, 4 full baths, and 3 half baths. In recent years, the enlargement of the master bedroom suite and the creation of an upstairs laundry room resulted in the loss of two of the bedrooms. The home’s original 3-car garage was expanded to a 4-car garage by the current owners, who have also recently added a swimming pool at the rear of the home.
The original owners were Robert Burnett Failey (1884-1970) and Mary Rebecca Parrott Failey (1886-1970). Both were from families whose ancestors were early settlers of Indianapolis. Mr. Failey was a graduate of Shortridge High School and Princeton University. He was President of the Indiana Mirror Manufacturing Company and a Director of Merchants National Bank and Trust Company. Mrs. Failey also graduated from Shortridge High School and from Bennett College in Millbrook, NY. Mary was one of the seven women who founded The Orchard School and was active in numerous organizations, including the Children’s Museum, Indianapolis Woman’s Club, Dramatic Club, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Indianapolis Garden Club. The Faileys had three sons: Robert Burnett Failey Jr., James Franklin Failey, and William Henry Comingore Failey.
Following the 1970 deaths of both Robert Sr. and Mary, the residence was acquired by their oldest son, Robert Burnett Failey Jr. (1915-2007). Like his father, he graduated from Princeton University, then from Harvard Medical School. He practiced internal medicine at the Indiana University Medical Center. Bob was president of the University Club of Indianapolis and served on the Board of Corporators of Crown Hill Cemetery and the Ensemble Music Society.
In 1984, the property was purchased from Dr. Failey by his nephew, John Noël Failey, and John’s wife, Julia (Jill) Luros Failey. John is a graduate of Wabash College. After serving in the U.S. Army, John received a master’s degree from the Indiana University School of Business. He was President of Engineered Cooling Systems from 1984 to 2004. Currently, The history of the 2023 Decorators Show House and Gardens was researched by St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild member, Sharon Butsch Freeland.
John serves as President of the Ensemble Music Society. Jill graduated from Indiana University and created the recreational therapy program at the Hook Physical Rehabilitation Center and the Pain Center at Community Hospital. She was the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2013 Indianapolis Woman of the Year. Jill is active in several community organizations. For 15 years, she held a variety of leadership roles in St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, including President in 2007 and 2008. John and Jill have two daughters, Julia Failey and Elisabeth Failey Wagner.
After 82 years of ownership by members of the Failey family, the home was sold to Jay Metzler and Andrea (Toth) Metzler in 2010. Jay is the owner of Houseworks Building Company. Andrea is an Orthopedic Physician’s Assistant. She has a B.S. from DePaul University and an M.S. from Butler University. During the eight years of the Metzlers’ ownership, they made significant renovations throughout the home. In 2018, the couple sold the property to its fifth and current owners. The Metzlers now reside in Boise, Idaho.
The current owners of the residence are Eugene C. Hsiao, M.D., and Tomi (Hill) Hsiao. Dr. Hsiao grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from North Central High School. He has a wide range of training in plastic surgery and reconstruction. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He also received post-graduate training at both the University of Louisville and Washington University in St. Louis. Tomi Hsiao is also a graduate of the University of Louisville. It was there that the couple met. Tomi enjoys being involved in her children’s school activities. Dr. and Mrs. Hsiao are the parents of Hannah, Zach, and Oliver. The family enjoys playing hockey, volleyball, and golf.
St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is excited to present this unique residence as its 62nd Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. Proceeds from the annual event will be donated to the Behavior Health Academy at Eskenazi Hospital. The guild has pledged a gift of $1,000,000 to the facility.
St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is often asked, “how is a home selected to be a show house?”Photographs from the Failey family archives.
AREA DESCRIPTION
It’s the beautiful ornate gate and fence that welcomes you to this historic property. It was our goal to uncover the original 1928 ironwork (uniquely positioned relative to the home) hidden by years of overgrown ivy. Through the gate, you’ll find pops of seasonal colors whichset the stage for this magnificent property. Framing the walkway, varieties of hostas brighten the space while pansies, the quintessential symbol of spring, add cheer to the area. Landscaping also includes fresh mulch and smartly placed splashes of additional color.
Mr. Green Jeans Landscape and Irrigation is a full service professional landscaping company with over 20 years of experience making the Indianapolis area beautiful by providing superior landscaping, design, installation, and maintenance services.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS For the fourth year in a row, Mr. Green Jeans is honored to participate in the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens.

AREA DESCRIPTION Property Pros is happy to welcome guests to the 2023 Decorators’ Show House and Gardens with an elegant pop of color along the front entrance. Allowing the house to speak for itself, the limited front bed space plays on a passion for pink as presented to Property Pros by the homeowner at an initial visit. Sometimes less is truly more. We feel we have found a beautiful balance in our supporting role with a sunny first greeting in greens and pinks. Hoping to also get in the last word, we plan to carry on with a colorful border out back to marry the new pool into the mature landscape and glorious old yew border that has gracefully provided decades of privacy from the street and adjacent homes.

AREA DESCRIPTION The lush vine draped over the front door was the inspiration and an invitation to step into our nature themed entry way. The portico, or vestibule, which bridges the gap between the home’s exterior and interior, is filled with soft floral, vine, and butterfly motifs including our custom produced console table from Venice, Italy. The neutral tile is strengthened by the saturated color palette. This little space says “Welcome” and invites guests to stow their umbrellas and remove their wet boots!

AREA DESCRIPTION As guests step into the entry, the cased opening on their left hearkens one’s curiosity. Not only is this the cloakroom, but also a path for a private entry into the powder bath. The subtlety of the polished plaster walls, by David, is simple and creates a playful movement throughout. This collaboration not only simplified, but enlarged the space with the application of a Roman Clay paint that complimented the Sherwin-Williams paint for the trim and baseboards. The tile floor, not original to the home, led to decisions for black lighting and plumbing fixtures to capture the dark painted baseboards that lead in from the entry.

AREA DESCRIPTION We combined the existing elegance of the space with practical luxury. Herringbone wood floors, the white marble fireplace, and baroque sconces influenced the design towards French interiors. Nothing in this living room is overly curated and many pieces are multi-functional. The bones of the room remain neutral while the furniture and accessories are Asian inspired. The two styles enliven the space to create a unique, stylish room that’s both fun and beautiful!

AREA DESCRIPTION The challenge was to create a space that delivers the grandeur this house deserves. Bringing a historic aspect to the design, a wallpaper based on tapestry design from the Grand Masters for Historic Royal Palaces was installed. Instantly, the continuous garden design greets and envelops the visitor, transporting one to an enchanted place. The original mirror remains a focal point upon entering, while dark painted trim anchors the space and provides continuity to the second-floor hall. Light fittings and furnishings make the best use of the narrow space without sacrificing interest or impact.

The Bernhardt Ford Chairs pay homage to the Provence Blue of the La Cornue range in the adjacent kitchen and adds a color that is repeated throughout the room. AREA DESCRIPTION The Butler’s Pantry, Hallway, and Pool Half Bath are in a new addition to the residence. The new additional area in the Butler’s Pantry gained storage space and a speed oven. The Pool Half Bath was designed to keep family and friends as close as possible to the new pool. Inspired by the Art Deco movement of the 1920’s and 30’s, the study blends geometry, blue hues, and metallics to invoke a moody space with both form and function. Rich mahogany adds depth, a leather wrapped desk pulls in an element of masculinity, balanced by the curved forms of the linen chandelier and Eames lounge chair. Light pours in from the existing windows, allowing the hand painted silver leaf ceiling to shine. Custom cabinetry with intriguing linework creates a unique backdrop to the study, while concealing personal items for a clean finish.

AREA DESCRIPTION The half bathroom works as an extension of the study, thanks to the cohesion of the color palette, metal finishes, and use of geometric patterns. AREA DESCRIPTION Modern, sophisticated, and serene describe the primary bedroom. Cool greens and warm whites in the handmade wool area rug inspired the color palette. The green glazed entry hall leads you into the room with its dramatic chandelier and linen draperies. The upholstered bed is enhanced by beautiful linens in white, cream, and taupe. The nightstands and the crystal lamps are the perfect complement in this space while the rattan lounge chair and desk make the room comfortable and inviting. An important element in the room is the original artwork by several Indiana artists whose art adds immeasurably to our design concept.

AREA DESCRIPTION The design inspiration for the Primary Bath comes from the soft green tones found in the existing floor and shower tile, which the homeowners preferred to keep. The shower was updated with a steam shower system to give the homeowners a relaxing spa experience. The WC received a color boost with wallpaper and window treatment featuring egrets in flight. Complementing the calm green palette are paintings by local artists Molly Young Meier and the late Joni T. Johnson. The inspiration for this boy’s room was to create a space that could transition from a young teenager into college age. JB Designs chose fabrics with traditional patterns in shades of greens that will stay timeless while also incorporating metal and wood that would lean more classic. To keep it youthful, we chose artwork and décor that highlighted current interests, but could also showcase memorabilia in later years. The bookcase also allows space for current playthings, while being an elegant place to display treasured items in the future.

AREA DESCRIPTION Bathrooms are one of the best spaces to bring the drama. Due to their small size, they tend to allow for dark and dramatic tones to feel less intense. This is why Studio 687 decided to avoid the tropes of a more classic design. Limewash paint was utilized to add a quiet warmth to the space while delivering the romantic old-world feel the home boasts. The cool toned green was chosen to complement the existing slate tile. To add an extra layer to the textured walls, Studio 687 opted to wrap the medicine cabinet in a beautifully contrasting oxblood vinyl.

A delicate balance of traditional and contemporary elements makes for a cozy, comfortable, and timeless bedroom. The soft blueishgreen tone of the walls was inspired by the tile in the ensuite bathroom and has been paired with a palette of aubergine, indigo, sage, warm wood, and brass accents to keep the room feeling fresh. Modern lines combined with classic patterns results in a room equally suitable for a teenage girl and weekend guests alike.

AREA DESCRIPTION The design challenge was to create an ensuite bath, increase storage possibilities, add a makeup vanity, and replace the original bathtub with a shower. By eliminating the entrance from the hall, a niche was created for a custom built-in cabinet. Opposite the sink, a tall but narrow corner cabinet was removed and replaced with a custom floating vanity. A pair of wall sconces repeat the diamond motif of the wall tile. The large vanity mirror adds reflective value to illuminate the narrow space. Custom dogwood gemstone knobs on the chest on chest add a touch of femininity to the bath.

AREA DESCRIPTION Fresh, bright, and functional were goals for the laundry. The wallpaper brings nature indoors, covers the walls, and livens up an otherwise utilitarian space. A stunning light fixture against a pale blue ceiling, along with all of the trim painted in a similar hue keeps the space light. Baskets, drying racks, and an area to sit down to craft or sew give the area much needed function for everyday tasks. To refresh the built-in cabinetry, wallpaper was added for style, yet is durable to withstand daily use. A mix of greens, blues, and pops of pink, make it a happy place to spend time.

AREA DESCRIPTION Entering onto the property, you’re greeted with a beautiful arrangement of spring annuals and pops of color to share the evidence of spring. As you arrive, you’ll be welcomed along the driveway with an abundance of mass plantings leading you either from the main entry or back terrace with a natural pathway guiding you to the garden shed. Within this border planting, all materials and elements are aligned to keep them natural, yet beautifully maintained.

Ideas for potential show houses come from interested homeowners, real estate agents, surveys of desired neighborhoods, and other contacts in the community. To be selected, a home must be spacious enough to accommodate multiple design areas, have front and back staircases, a central entrance hall, a substantial garage or carriage house area, a sizeable lawn, outdoor areas to accommodate landscapers’ designs, and be of interest and character to attract the public.
A Decorators’ Show House and Gardens is most successful when it can exhibit examples of many designers’ creativity, both inside and out, while keeping the overall impression of the house with a coordinated and integrated design scheme. The event is not a custom decorating service for homeowners. Designers are given freedom of expression in their areas, although
there are guidelines for reasonable adaptations to color schemes and themes that flow from room to room. Each year, a Design Board of Guild Members and designers/landscapers oversees area selection and design proposals for the look and feel of each area.
Being a Decorators’ Show House and Gardens homeowner is an exciting and rewarding experience. Past homeowners find it gratifying to be part of the longest running show house in the county, while funds are being raised for Eskenazi Health. If you are open to current design trends, are comfortable making decisions, are flexible and can adapt to change, then please consider becoming a future Decorators’ Show House and Gardens homeowner.
