very bride-to-be imagines the perfect wedding. And while her definition of “perfect” may undergo a transformation along the way from daydream to reality, her basic style will likely remain constant—classic, modern, or vintage. Follow the advice of our pros to achieve your favorite style as they divulge the characteristics of each theme— from engagement rings to wedding photos—and some of the biggest trends. Of course you’ll want to tweak the details to give them personal meaning. After all, on your wedding day, it’s all about you and your groom.
gold and platinum are most often used for the bands, which may be adorned with small diamonds.
Modern: “Modern rings allow people to be creative and maybe even a little bit edgy,” says Jen Simpson, marketing coordinator for Reis-Nichols Jewelers.

IT ALL STARTS WITH THE RING
Classic: Wedding bands in this style are simple with clean lines. The classic engagement ring is the solitaire, hands down. “The focus is on the stone rather than the setting,” says Nicole Amsler, director of marketing for Moyer Fine Jewelers. While the solitaire can be any shape, the most traditional is the sparkling, round brilliant. Precious metals such as white

“There’s no right or wrong when it comes to a contemporary style.” Think princess or cushion shapes; black diamonds; alternative stones such as sapphires; bezel-set stones; or “eastwest” placements where the stone is set from left-to-right rather than from top-tobottom. Modern wedding bands often use darker metals and have designs cast into the metal or darkened engraving. “Contemporary metals such as cobalt, titanium, or tungsten tend to be stronger metals, and men tend to gravitate toward those because they are sturdier than gold,” Simpson says. They’re also lighter weight than their traditional counterpart. “Overall, modern wedding bands tend to be bolder, chunkier, thicker, and wider,” says Shaun Goodyear, graduate gemologist at Moyer Fine Jewelers.
Vintage: Vintage-inspired designs are currently the hottest category. Vintage engagement rings are ornate with delicate, intricate details including filigree, floral motifs, swirls, lace work, and scallops. “Hand-engraved scallops make a nod back to that Hollywood-era engagement ring,” Amsler says. “A halo of diamonds around the center stone is popular in all SUMMER 2014 | INDIANA BRIDE 13

Classic:
Think Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, or Kate Middleton. “Classic wedding gowns stand the test of time,” says Leslie Jones, owner of The Wedding Studio and Leslie Jones Weddings and Events. into other color palettes. Ivory and champagne may top the list, but Russell says gray, light blue, and blush pink are popular right now, too. Brides are increasingly choosing cap sleeves and lace tops. But the biggest trend he sees is gowns with low backs—bare or covered with netting. “Designers are emphasizing back treatments and making that part of the dress more stunning than in the past,” he says. Jones says softer fabrics (chiffon and silk charmeuse) and less-structured dresses with no boning in the bodices are beginning to trend. She notes that the fitand-flare silhouette, which sits close to the body and flares at the knee, works for both modern and vintage dresses. “A modern fit-and-flare with vintage lacework and color underneath brings it all together,” she says. “It’s the most popular gown now.”

It’s shades of the Roaring ’20s—an unstructured, draping flapper dress with flourishes. “The slip dress has an underneath sheath, and the outer layer of netting is often heavily encrusted with beads,” Russell says. Usually floor-length with a short “sweep” train, it can have an offthe-shoulder cap sleeve or a tank top. A feathered or jeweled headband or vintageinspired hair accessories replace the veil.

Modern: Your muses are Jennifer Lopez or Sarah Jessica Parker. Their makeup is edgy and dramatic, especially when it comes to the eyes. “Eyes are smoky or pale—one extreme or the other,” Kiser says. The skin may be dewy with a bit of shine to the cheeks or at the opposite end of the spectrum with bronze tones and glossy lips.

“Modern hair is very organic,” Kiser says. These styles incorporate a lot of texture, whether hair is worn half-up-halfdown or in an up-do. They may feature wrap curls, side braids, or a three-strand, a fishtail, or a French braid. Ombre hair, in which the ends are lighter, is also popular and adds a more artistic look, Kiser says.

Classic: “One flower, one color is a sophisticated, clean look that makes a big impact,” says Chuck Eaglin, owner of Meridian Floral Designs & Events. “When you use more colors, it begins to 18 INDIANA BRIDE | SUMMER 2014

Vintage: Think Christina Aguilera or Dita Von Teese—it’s all about the red lip. “It’s really glamorous,” Kiser says. “Someone who wants to wear this look needs to have a bold personality.” Use a lip stain for a matte effect or go all-out glossy. Kiser swathes the eyelid in soft shadow, applies a darker shadow in the outer crease of the eyelid, and uses dark eyeliner to create a cat eye that completes the look. The hair is straight out of Old Hollywood—finger waves around the face and short bobs. Kiser creates the illusion with a faux bob, securing longer hair underneath so it’s hidden.

get more casual, and you’ll lose the classic, romantic look you want.” Orchids, posy calla lilies, roses, and gardenias are standard fare for classic bouquets. Embellishments on the traditional round bouquet are minimal. “There may be some braiding, ribbon work, or beading on the handle of the bouquet,” says Brian Davies, owner of Zionsville Flower Company. “But the key is to keep it simple and elegant.”
Modern: Structure, distinct lines, and non-traditional flowers or materials are the hallmarks of the modern bouquet— perhaps a cascading style with blossoms attached to the wirework rather than traditional trailing ivy. According to Eaglin, tropical flowers and succulents mixed with other flowers are often used for modern bouquets.

Davies notes the trend toward using non-flowers such as curly willow, leaves and greenery, sticks, berries, grasses, wires, and ostrich and peacock feathers. “Modern can be high style with lots of architectural work or a round bouquet made of non-flowers,” he says.

Vintage: Vintage bouquets often feature smaller flowers such as tea and sweetheart roses, but peonies, sweet pea, and garden roses are also popular. “A garden rose can be up to four times the cost of a traditional florist rose, but they are huge, and their fragrance is out of this world,” Eaglin says. might be covered with lace or an antique handkerchief. But the hot trend in vintage bouquets has nothing to do with flowers. The bouquets are constructed of antique brooches, sometimes donated by wedding guests to add a personal touch. Rings and earrings can be wired into the bouquet for accents. “It’s a very heavy bouquet, but a very beautiful bouquet,” Eaglin says.
A CAKE FOR EVERY PALATE
Classic: The classic wedding cake is a three- to five-tier round cake covered with white, cream, or ivory buttercream frosting and trimmed with piping. A topper of fresh or sugar flowers provides a hint of color. “By today’s standards, it’s a cake without pillars; it’s just stacked tier on tier,” says Ilene McHone, owner of Classic Cakes. “Inside, anything goes, but the most traditional flavors are white, almond, or lemon.”

McHone calls them “anything-goes kinds of cakes.” Typically, fondant is used on a modern cake, which may include round or square tiers, and it’s often embellished with an abundance of textures—think delicate ruffles for romantic brides or a bark-like texture for nature-lovers. Monograms are popular toppers for tiered cakes, but whatever the decorations, they’re usually bold colors rather than pastels. As far as flavors and fillings, Godby says white cake with raspberry filling and chocolate cake with hazelnut filling are the big favorites. One of the latest trends, McHone notes, is the “naked cake.” All of the icing is between the layers with none on the outside. Multiple layers make up each tier.
Vintage: Nostalgic trim featuring roses, cameos, buttons, and lace are added to a classic white cake to achieve the vintage look. Or the cake can be a reproduction of the bride’s parents’ cake.

“Brides bring in their parents’ wedding pictures and display them so people can see the differences and the similarities,” Godby says. Another take on vintage is the steampunk cake adorned with silver, brass, and gold gears; brooches; or other jewelry. SUMMER 2014 | INDIANA BRIDE 21

The decorations are often created from sugar, although McHone has seen brides use real brooches, then give them away as mementos during the reception. “Homestyle icing—rough icing that looks like someone took a spatula and smeared on the cake—is extremely popular right now, especially for barn or outdoor weddings,” McHone says, adding that sometimes there are patterns in the spatula marks.
CAPTURED MEMORIES
Engagement
photos: Taking engagement photos does more than commemorate the occasion, it’s practical. “It helps the couple build a relationship with the photographer that carries over to the wedding day,” says Dawn Hallock of DaJaView Photography, owned by her and her husband, Jake.
Classic: Classic photos are the shots you see in the majority of wedding albums—the bride and groom staring adoringly into one another’s eyes, wedding party members all in a row and smiling at the happy couple, the father giving his daughter away. “Sometimes thought of as the same old tried-and-true shots, these are admittedly in most photographers’ basic toolkit of poses,” Hallock says. “But no matter what style the wedding, many brides want a sampling of this kind of photography.” Modern: “The modern bride wants to have fun images,” Hallock says. “This is her day to have a glamorous fashion shoot that might look like what you’d see in a magazine.” Unlike the classic style, modern photos put the happy couple in situations where they don’t look posed. The idea is to let their personalities shine.

Vintage: “Old cars, a vintage dress, and an unusual setting such as an old barn help the vintage bride tell her story,” Hallock says. A treasured cameo handed down from her great-grandmother or a pair of cufflinks that belonged to the groom’s grandfather—the details to be captured for a vintage wedding are more than just props—they have meaning for the bride, the groom, and their families.
