The Four Seasons Inspired by Indiana’s distinct times of year, wedding pros share their ideas on everything from food to flowers.
E
very bride wants her wedding to be memorable, and one of the easiest ways to make her dream come true is to embrace Mother nature and include all things seasonal in the wedding festivities. it’s the smart thing to do, and it can be friendlier on the budget. “this is a great city for seasonal weddings,” says barbie Gurwitz, owner of signature events by barbie. “we’ve got all of them here. and any season can be gorgeous.” though you may not want to outfit your bridesmaids in bright-orange dresses with black satin sashes for a lateOctober wedding, subtly incorporating the colors and feel of the season into the wedding makes everything flow together overall. that doesn’t mean that every seasonal wedding will look the same. Far from it. a lot depends on the time—whether it’s early, mid, or late in the season. “if it’s late in the season, a bride may even want to consider having her wedding focus more on the approaching season to keep it fresh,” says sarah Godby, vice president of sales and marketing for the ritz Charles. Here are some ideas from the experts to help you make the most of your wedding, no matter in which season your nuptials may fall.
Lush peonies are a gorgeous choice for a spring bouquet and table centerpieces.
spring in spring, the outdoors come alive once more, and everyone’s eager to lighten up. robin’s-egg blue, blush pink, soft lavender—it’s the pastels’ time to shine, with a pink-and-green combination being among the most popular pairings of the season. For bridal bouquets and floral arrangements, bulb plants such as tulips and hyacinths or flowering branches are traditional.
“in terms of year-round availability of flowers, the world is our oyster today,” says toomie Farris, president and CeO of Mcnamara Florist. “but many brides want to take advantage of the seasonal availability of flowers because that’s when they are most cost-effective.” Farris notes that May and June are popular months for peonies, a bloom that is very seasonal. Gurwitz likes incorporating them into late-spring weddings. “they’re gorgeous, and they have a really romantic look in spring,” she says. when it comes to food, a bride can’t go wrong with a lamb entree, and Gurwitz suggests accompanying it with fresh, local produce, such as baby carrots, asparagus, sugar snap peas, and new potatoes. Fruits and herbs also add a seasonal touch. “Go with things that have a fresh fragrance and flavor,” Godby says. “basil, rosemary, and mint are starting to pop up, and those work well in drinks, too.” Consider a mint-garnished mojito, a fruity sangria, or a white wine. and keep the cake light—lemon, perhaps—as well. eric Houghtalen, weddings and events coordinator for the indianapolis Public Library, suggests adding some bohemian flair, one the latest trends for spring. “try taupes and greens using a soft, ethereal design, crystal chandeliers, and ghost chairs (clear Chiavari chairs) to add a bit of an edge,” he says. For the cake, WINTER 2015 | INDIANA BRIDE 25

he suggests adorning a modern, four-tier cake with cascading orchids, dusty millers, and an antique brooch or feathers to “knock it up to the next level.” For the spring bride, lightweight sheer chiffon dresses complement the season, Gurwitz says, while the men look wellturned-out in tan suits with pastel ties in the bride’s colors. Hairstyles for spring and summer often include updos featuring soft, flowing curls—nothing slicked back and severe. “Brides want their hair to look soft, elegant, and romantic,” says Brenda Sotolongo, owner of Pro Soto Beauty Studios. Half-updos with hair jewelry are also a popular choice for the spring bride. No matter what the season, a flawless airbrush finish creates the perfect foundation for bridal makeup. It’s sweatproof, tear-proof, and long-lasting. Pastel pink, soft coral, or peach look great on the cheeks, while muted champagne or bronze tones add polish to the eyes. “Add dramatic eyeliner and a bold lip for a romantic look,” Sotolongo says.
Hot summer days offer several challenges, like making sure guests stay hydrated. “You can do a cute vintage lemonade stand or an upscale water fountain—anything to keep the liquids flowing,” Gurwitz says. Photo options can be a challenge, which may influence your choice of venue. “In the dead of summer, when the sun’s almost straight overhead, you want to find shady areas for your outdoor photos, so that can limit your choices,” says Melody Withers, owner of Melody Withers
summer Take a look at your calendar from last summer, and you’ll probably see that warm-weather weddings are still really popular. There’s a reason for that. Summer is bright and sunny, lush and green, and popping with vibrant color. The whole outdoors take on a more festive feel. Not surprisingly, many brides opt for outdoor weddings or receptions to celebrate their big day. “Summer is a time of abundance,” Farris says. The flowers of summer are roses, Gerbera daisies, lilies, and hydrangeas, as well as garden flowers, such as zinnias, sunflowers, and even herbs. “Flowering basil or rosemary spikes add nice fragrance to a centerpiece,” he says. Farris recalls a summer bride who wanted a dramatic bouquet and floral arrangements featuring a “riot of color”— orange, fuchsia, purple, hot pink, lime, and blue blooms. “Don’t throw in a pastel pink with strong colors, though,” Farris says. “They all need to have the same intensity or color value.”
Soft makeup looks and feels fresh in a warmweather wedding.
Photography. “Brides like to have water features in the background, like a creek or a fountain.” You also need to play it cool when it comes to the menu. Houghtalen recommends a self-serve raw bar with shrimp, crab legs, and oysters on a bed of ice and lots of fresh greens. Godby suggests firing up the grill for meats like a classic filet or chicken served with a refreshing Key lime sauce. “Those grilled flavors say summer to me,” she says. Consider serving spiked iced tea or
lemonade coolers and a caprese skewer appetizer featuring ripe Hoosier-grown tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella. For an outdoor wedding, a rustic “naked” cake, where each layer is topped with fresh berries instead of icing, is an unusual way to keep everything light. Two themes are popular for summer weddings—nautical and Victorian. For a seaside motif, Houghtalen suggests long, family-style tables dressed in white linens with navy-blue touches and a tablescape of lush hydrangeas. He recalls an elaborate outdoor wedding with a French Victorian tea-party theme, featuring a birch altar draped with chiffon, gold Chiavari chairs shaded with canvas patio umbrellas, and an aisle strewn with pink and white rose petals. The color palette was dusty rose, blush, champagne, gold, and ivory. Mismatched vintage china and flower-filled teacups graced the cocktail tables, and the peak layer of the three-tier cake was wrapped in lace and adorned with a vintage sugar caddy filled with flowers. “It was truly amazing,” Houghtalen says. Indiana summers can be steamy, so Gurwitz suggests brides consider a tealength dress for comfort, especially with an outdoor ceremony. Colorful, patterned bridesmaids’ dresses are a hot trend now, and white tuxedo jackets for men make the perfect foil for summer brights. If the wedding is outside, wedge shoes will prevent the bride and bridesmaids from sinking into the grass. “They make a huge difference,” Gurwitz says. For spring and summer weddings, a bronzer can ensure the bride’s face and decolletage are one tone, especially when she’s wearing a strapless gown and wants to even out any tan lines. A soft face with a bold, matte lip in red or coral goes well with the vibrant colors of summer weddings, Sotolongo says. For a Victorianthemed event, wash the lips in soft pinks, nearly nudes, or corals, and the eyes in soft brown, silver, or champagne colors, and then use liner to define the eyes so they pop in photographs. Half or full bands of false lashes also bring out the eyes and ensure brides won’t have to worry about mascara breaking down because of humidity or tears. WINTER 2015 | INDIANA BRIDE 27
fall Chrysanthemums in vibrant oranges, yellows, and purples; hypericum in berry and orange hues; fall grasses and bittersweet; and pumpkins and gourds set the tone for fall weddings. Celebrations during this time of year tend to be more casual and down-home, with a more natural decor. Rustic barns are popular venues. “Beginning with fall, we might do portraits before the wedding, when the sun has a prettier light,” Withers says. She often poses the bridal party in front of fall foliage backlit by the sun. Photos of the bride and groom in a field of sunflowers, a pumpkin patch, or a harvested field help recreate those fall memories for years to come. Some of her fall brides wear cowboy boots under their wedding finery. But fall weddings can also be sophisticated. For the bride who wants a more elegant look, Farris suggests using neutral, blended colors for florals, such as taupe-colored Sahara roses, quicksand roses that have pink undertones, or cream-colored flowers with a cranberry or burgundy accent.
Rich fall hues pop against an otherwise plaincolored wedding cake.
When Godby’s daughter was married in late October, she used harmonious shades of pink, dark rose, and rust, and guests were seated in gold Chiavari chairs. “We wanted the warmth of gold for the fall season,” she says. Godby incorporated items that lent themselves nicely to fall but still kept it subtle. Sage-stuffed mushrooms, raspberry-brie puffs, and miniature caramel apples complemented the main course of pork with an apple cider demi-glace sauce and sweet potatoes. The signature cocktail was a white martini with a cinnamon-stick stirrer, and the cake featured a layer of spice flavor, one apricot-filled white layer, and a third of raspberry-filled chocolate cake. The late-night station held a variety of local doughnuts and apple-cider shots. A more countryfed fall-wedding menu might include pumpkin soup, cheddar grits, biscuits, sweet-potato pie, and spiked cider, with guests seated on wooden benches around old farm tables. For the dress, long-sleeved lace gowns are very popular for fall. “If the bride is a little edgy, she can do a colored wedding gown or the under-color

could be a peachy tone that would go with the colors of the season,” Gurwitz says. For men, either a dark suit or a tuxedo works well. It just depends on how formal the wedding is. The fall makeup palette leans toward gold, brown, and copper tones, with plenty of bronzer to add a healthy glow. “Green and olive tones make the eyes pop,” Sotolongo says. Lips are burgundy, wine, rust, deep coral, or plum. Updos give way to styles that cover the shoulders for fall and winter.
This festive winter boutonniere includes pepper berries and white rosebuds.
If tying the knot in cold weather, brides often choose either a romantic holiday theme or a winter-wonderland theme. To achieve the look of the latter, Farris suggests using soft blue and white hydrangeas or going with all white flowers and no holiday greens. “Stars of Bethlehem, lilies, and roses are available year-round, and by mid- to late-December, we’re starting to see tulips
again,” he says. Gurwitz loves a palette of light blue, white, and silver. “Keep it very metallic, with lots of shimmering silver candles, mercury glass candles, and chandeliers,” she says. “Glamour and glitz are what I go for in the wintertime.” Other details that fit the theme include
a silver cake adorned with fairy dust, an edible sprinkle that gives the confection a sparkling look; a bridal bouquet fashioned from crystal, pearl, and silver brooches; pewter chargers on the tables; and silver bridesmaids’ dresses. The happy couple could stroll through a sparkler salute as they leave the wedding, and if the celebration is in downtown Indy, they can hop

into a white horse-drawn carriage. “It makes for a great picture,” Gurwitz says. The makeup for the bride who opts for a winter-wonderland theme has a high sparkle factor. Think shimmering silver underneath the brow, ice blue on the lids, midnight-blue eyeliner, and navy mascara tipped with black on the lashes. Sotolongo suggests a creamy blush for a dewy look and a mauve or berry lipstick topped with a shimmery or pearlized gloss. And who doesn’t love a holidayinspired wedding? “My thought is, go for it,” Godby says. “You’ve already got a lot of free decorations—poinsettias and greenery.” A garland-clad staircase or a beautifully decorated tree makes a terrific photo op. Farris suggests using glass vases filled with holiday ornaments topped with a floral to make it even more festive. This is the time of year for romance and all-out glamour. “The bride could wear a duchess satin gown in deep Refreshing cranberry berry red,” cocktails are pretty, too. Houghtalen says. Fur stoles and long gloves amp up the romance factor. “A dramatic, smoky eye in blacks and charcoals with silver highlights and a really bold red on the lips would be beautiful,” Sotolongo says. Go light on the blush, but add a bit of shimmer dust on the cheekbones, at the top of the shoulders, and down the arms to complete the glamorous, Old Hollywood look. If the wedding date is before the holidays, Godby suggests opting for a traditional entree like turkey, ham, or prime rib. But if it’s right around or after the holidays, consider something different, such as a pasta dish. “By that time, people are ready for something new and fresh,” she says. Signature drinks featuring peppermint Schnapps or cranberry juice keep up the theme, as does a cake in red velvet or chocolate served with raspberry sauce.
