GREETINGS, AND WELCOME TO THE 2014 HOME-A-RAMA hosted by the City of Westfield. The City of Westfield is honored to be the home for this year’s Home-A-Rama event at Brookside. The beautifully crafted homes that are featured in the event have been envisioned and built by members of the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis. These homes will showcase why people want to live in the City of Westfield. As mayor, I hope that you’ll take some time to explore our community and discover for yourself why Money magazine named Westfield the No. 1 best place to live in Indiana and the 18th best place to live in the nation! Westfield is home to Grand Park, the largest sports complex of its kind in the country. With 26 outdoor diamonds, 31 outdoor fields, and two indoor facilities, Grand Park is a 400-acre sports masterpiece featuring a full range of championship-level facilities.
Andy Cook Westfield Mayor
Currently, the City of Westfield boasts more than 70 miles of trails. City leaders are dedicated to creating community connectivity through trail expansion. The city is also in the design phase of a downtown revitalization project called Grand Junction. Once built, it will bring residents together by offering entertainment, family activities, and unique shops, making downtown Westfield a destination. Thank you so much for visiting our community. I hope you feel right at home. Sincerely, Andy Cook, Mayor

Our objective when designing and building the home was to find the perfect balance of luxury and comfort. The home is Energy Star–rated and green certified to keep utility costs low. The house is designed around a stunning two-story rotunda with wood ceilings. A first-floor flex space serves as a study, a craft room, or a formal dining room. A large gourmet kitchen with a custom hood opens up to the great room, making a fine entertaining space. The master suite provides the perfect oasis for quiet time with a separate sitting room and step-up sleeping area. Kids can have sleepovers in the “hidden” playroom with a loft bed. Move on to the lower level where you’ll find the ultimate space for entertaining, whether you’re watching the Colts in the home theater or hanging out in the wine room or bar area. Test your pool or shuffleboard skills, or step into the poker/cigar room to enjoy a game and a fine cigar.
Designer Philosophy Ayres recently started her own business but is no stranger to design, as she has been in the industry for more than eight years. Ayres approaches every project individually and can help clients with all budgets, styles, and sizes. Ayres’s design philosophy is that everyone should live well. Design is all about creating a beautiful, functional, and well-organized space. Your home is truly a statement of your style, and your interior spaces should be just as stunning as they are practical. A smart design makes a statement while also making you feel comfortable at home. Ayres specializes in transitionally styled interiors, blending the old with the new.

Ayres’s design approach was to create a home where the family could live comfortably day to day and also impressively entertain all age groups. The transitional design appeals to each of the senses, with a mix of woods, metallics, patterns, textures, and colors. With the help of West Elm, Ayres’s vision came to life at an affordable price.

Bedrock Builders’s Home-A-Rama home was designed with traditional family functionality in mind. Open gathering spots accentuate the spacious floorplan. The combination kitchen, breakfast room, and great room provide an abundance of space for all family members to be together. The main level also boasts a completely self-sufficient apartment quarters. Tucked away on the third level is a large office area tailored for one who likes to work from home. The lower level includes spaces for adult get-togethers, a stage for “make-believe,” and an enormous game room for the whole gang. The outdoor-living space is plenty big for all the festivities. Design flexibility was also important, so this home could be built anywhere from 3,600 square feet to the 7,500 square feet you see in this show home.
Designer Philosophy “Let your home reflect your style” is DJ Interiors’s mission statement and accurately describes Jones’s philosophy of letting unique interiors reflect the individual client’s taste. In each home, contemporary to traditional, she helps her clients create a classic and timeless look with an emphasis on livability. Jones feels that listening carefully and understanding her clients’ tastes and needs is key to a successful job, whether it be a new-home construction project or a small remodel.
Show Home Approach
DJ Interiors Inc. Deb Jones 110 E. Main St. Carmel, IN 46032 317-848-8808 djinteriors@sbcglobal.net
Jones’s goal for this home was to design a classic look that is as beautiful and comfortable 10 years from now as it is today. Craftsman details mix wonderfully with the soft, contemporary accents of today’s interiors, creating an eclectic look that most people find very livable. Jones has used the “new neutral,” a soft ashen gray/brown color, to establish a sense of flow throughout the home, with accents of black, white, coral, and blue to create individual personality in each room. She believes a home can be beautiful, functional, and livable at the same time.

Builder Philosophy
Hoss Homes Tracie, Steve, Nigel, and Colin Hoss 11825 Broadway St. Indianapolis, IN 46236 317-823-9788 hosshomes.com nigel@hosshomes.com
For nearly 40 years, Hoss Homes has been building—and perfecting—state-of-the-art custom homes in Central Indiana. What sets us apart from other builders? Naturally, our knowledge comes with experience. A unique approach to custom homebuilding, a fine attention to detail, and a firm belief in standing behind what we build are the founding elements of every Hoss home. Here at Hoss, we’re known for our quality work. We use methods and materials that have been proven to last. We engineer to the application, not just to code. We apply products not by force of habit, but where they work best for that particular home. We understand that providing quality is more than just a job. It is a commitment to having things done right—not only on move-in day but for years to come.
Show Home Approach A stunning adaptation of warm, contemporary design, this year’s home pairs classic craftsmanship with innovative style. Born of a desire to craft a space with both old and new elements, this home delivers a clean physical presence while maintaining functionality. A carefully selected melange of materials adds to this cozy yet practical atmosphere—the perfect combination for today’s families.
Designer Philosophy Your home should be a reflection of your lifestyle, both in looks and function with a strong respect for the architecture. “Your home” means that it looks like no other, with colors, furniture, and artwork that match your personality and lifestyle. Thirty years of design experience and knowledge enables Myers to create an individual look and feel that are truly yours.
Show Home Approach
Kittle’s Design Studio Tom Myers 8600 Allisonville Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46250 317-849-5300 kittles.com thomas.myers@kittles.com
Myers has taken a traditional Hoss home and updated it for today’s lifestyle. The center of this contemporary home is the great room/dining/kitchen area—the three rooms where everyone seems to gather. A covered veranda expands the living space to the outdoors and flows seamlessly from the kitchen. The laundry room/office becomes a multipurpose room that’s designed for many functions: laundry, home management, gift-wrapping, scrapbooking— the possibilities for this space are endless. A beautiful master suite with a spacious bathroom, plus generously sized secondary bedrooms, makes this a home designed for the way today’s family wants to live. Unusual finishes, updated trim features, and great furniture make for a truly modern home.

The Avalon’s magnificent two-story entry with a catwalk stairway sets the tone for a soaring great room. Function and extravagance define the kitchen, which has a lavish island. The cozy master suite includes a fireplace and a private door to an outdoor oasis. We designed the large master-suite bathroom with a custom walk-in shower and multiple showerheads. The upper-level loft overlooks the entry and great room and provides an ideal environment in which to finish homework or relax and read. The basement is our ultimate getaway, with a playroom, a wet bar, a card room, and a quiet theater room perfect for a family or a romantic movie night. We also included a beautiful guest suite with a private bathroom.
Designer Philosophy Mary Cook Associates was founded in 1986 to provide the highest-quality interior-design services to builders and developers, golf clubs and resorts, and senior housing industries. Designers at Mary Cook Associates are among the most respected in the industry. They respond to a wide range of demographic, geographic, and architectural influences by creating spaces that establish an immediate connection with those who experience them. The inventive, sophisticated interiors instill confidence with their audiences, be it prospective homebuyers, golf club members, or active adults looking to start the next chapter of their lives.

When designing this space for Home-A-Rama, we went for a modern farmhouse look and feel. This home is perfect for entertaining and family gatherings, and we have worked to continue the connectivity between the open kitchen and great room through our finishes and details. These areas are critical to how people live, so our design approach was to enhance how well the spaces work together. We included rustic wood beams paired with clean and tailored trim details. Natural materials enhance the walls and floors and further add to the farmhouse look. The basement is an ideal destination for any family. Inspired by current lifestyle trends, we created a great bar lounge with a banquette for views of the pool, as well as media seating. The private card room concealed by a barn door was an added element for that touch of inspiration and artistic extravagance.

We are privileged to have designed and built our refreshed Craftsman-style home for a very special family—our homeowners. We have collaborated every step of the way, beginning with picking a home site for our nature-loving family, followed by home design and orientation to capture the amazing views. Our homeowners have a large family, which needed to be considered. You’ll also appreciate our floorplan design, which encourages family connections while including private spaces, too. We varied soaring ceilings and window walls with cozy book nooks. Four fireplaces encourage family connections, while a telescoping door to the veranda invites nature in and doubles the entertaining spaces most of the year.
Designer Philosophy Everything Home is a boutique design firm in Carmel, Indiana, owned by Wendy Langston. She and her team specialize in interior designs for clients building luxury homes or renovating their current ones. To Wendy, luxury doesn’t mean stuffy; it can be cool, casual, relaxed, and effortless. Her focus is to create beautiful living spaces for everyday living, taking clients from the blueprint stage to lighting plans and final furnishings. Wendy’s award-winning designs are featured in HGTV magazine, Best of Houzz 2013 and 2014, and Best Interior Design, Luxury Home-A-Rama.

Each home design has a starting point—a jumping-off point—but this refreshed Craftsman has two: the amazing home setting nestled among a pine tree grove and the family that will live here. The feel of the home’s interior design was developed to fit both. We wanted to create a sanctuary for our busy homeowners—a place to come home to and connect with nature and one another. This is evident in our choices of colors, textures, and appointments, which combine to create a warm, inviting, and classic feel. Enjoy!

THE BEAUTY OF BROOKSIDE This year’s Home-A-Rama neighborhood boasts a wide range of housing styles and plenty of coveted amenities for residents BY JESSICA SPARKS
E
ntering Brookside, site of the 2014 Home-A-Rama, visitors are introduced to tree-lined streets featuring a variety of homes and a distinctive landscape. Custom homes and unique sites make Brookside one of the premier neighborhoods in Westfield. “What we started with was a really nice piece of ground,” says Jim Langston, president of Langston Development Company.
That land, with its rolling hills and mature trees, made for a nice backdrop for homes. Brookside is conveniently located at 161st Street just east of Carey Road, in close proximity to shopping, recreation, schools, and U.S. Highway 31. Park-like areas, with landscaping and flowing streams, make the community a picturesque oasis away from city life. Paved walking trails circle the perimeter of Brookside and are adjacent to a creek that divides the community. Resi-
dents can rent the pool’s clubhouse for occasions like birthday and graduation parties and family reunions. Brookside includes a wide range of custom homebuilders, making each house and lot different from its neighbors. “What you have isn’t the same as the neighbor across the street,” Langston says. With a master plan and aesthetic guidelines for the builders, the neighborhood maintains a sense of community continued on page 24

without a homogenous look to sites or houses. Langston says the way they review the builder plans before construction has a lot to do with the look and feel of the neighborhood. While a home can be almost any style, it needs to follow simple standards that keep everything looking cohesive. For example, homes must have an architectural break every 20 feet. That break might be a door or a window. When Brookside is complete, it will have 272 total lots. Langston expects the final two phases—20 lots north of the section where Home-A-Rama takes place and 41 south of that area—to start by the end of the year. “I’m hoping people come away seeing how we’ve designed and developed it to make it unique and preserve the natural qualities of the land,” he says.
“No matter what the preference is, the homeowner can get what he or she wants.” JIM LANGSTON, PRESIDENT OF LANGSTON DEVELOPMENT COMPANY
Lots in Brookside start at $80,000, and homes range from $600,000 to $1.2 million, which makes the neighborhood a welcoming place for diversity in style, size, and general build, Langston says. A modified Frank Lloyd Wright–style modern home might sit across from a house with more Colonial influences. Classic styles might be juxtaposed with modern layouts in a home. It really just depends on the buyer. “No matter what the preference is, the homeowner can get what he or she wants,” Langston says. Most homes feature finished basements with a bar and theater room, Langston says, and a growing number have an outdoor room with a firepit and a pizza oven. Langston Development Company also has planned and developed Glen Oaks at 131st Street and West Road in Carmel and Oak Manor at 171st Street and Carey Road in Westfield. 24 HOME-A-RAMA | JUNE 2014

On any given weekend, a few hundred teams fill Grand Park to play ball.
GRAND PLANS
Since opening this spring, Grand Park, Westfield’s newest crown jewel, has established itself as a premier sports facility, attracting thousands of visitors and boosting economic growth BY LAURA KRUTY

t turns out that the famous Field of Dreams quote “if you build it, he will come” applies to reallife baseball diamonds, too. You only have to visit Westfield’s Grand Park for proof. In the first five weeks after opening in mid-March, the sports complex attracted nearly 100,000 visitors, some from as far away as California, according to Steve
Henke, founder and president of Henke Development Group, which partnered with the city on the project. “The number of visitors to the park has already exceeded expectations,” Henke says. Some weekends have seen almost 300 teams competing. Officials are expecting 1.5 million annual visitors, and it’s estimated that the five-year economic impact will reach more than $1 billion.
The park has been popular so far, but leaders are banking on it to bolster Westfield’s economy for decades to come.

or daughter plays on a travel team, and they’ll tell you that such a commitment isn’t cheap when you factor in transportation expenses, hotel stays, food, and entertainment. In fact, traveling amateur sports in the U.S. has grown into an estimated $8.7 billion industry, according to a 2013 study by the National Association of Sports Commissions. That figure represents direct visitor spending by participants and those who accompany them. “At the same time, Westfield was looking at how to diversify our tax base,” says Mayor Andy Cook. “We looked at where our assets were, mixed that all together, and came up with a proposal that familyoriented sports done on a large scale could become an industry.” The city’s proposal made sense for a few reasons. Westfield is fairly centrally located in both the state and the country

and is easily accessible via interstates. Indiana has a strong sports culture, at both the collegiate and professional levels. And though the Hoosier State can’t boast an ideal year-round climate, towering mountains, or gorgeous beaches, it does have something that proved to be vital for Grand Park. “Flat land may be boring, but it’s great for soccer balls and trails,” Cook says. As developer of Bridgewater Club and a past president of the Carmel Dads’ Club, Henke was well familiar with Westfield and the popularity of youth sports. His team gathered several property owners whose land comprised the park’s 400 acres to sell the parcel to the city. Grand Park is bordered by Spring Mill Road on the west, 191st Street to the north, Tomlinson Road on the east, and 186th Street to the south. Henke Development Group 28 HOME-A-RAMA | JUNE 2014

also coordinated the project’s architects, engineers, and land planners, and continues to be involved in the park’s planning, marketing, and management. After the location was unanimously approved, the Westfield Sports Commission worked with Hamilton County Tourism to figure out which sports to build facilities for, as well as how big the park should be. They looked at other athletic complexes around the country to determine the size needed to host major regional and national tournaments. They also studied what activities would attract the most money and the most visitors. “The criteria was, what is the investment in that sport and the return on that investment?” Cook says. “It needed to bring in people.” Swimming and ice hockey were out, since facility costs would be too high.

Soccer matches are played on one of Grand Park’s 31 multipurpose fields.
Tennis didn’t make the cut either because it wouldn’t bring in a large enough number of people. Ultimately, three sports—soccer, baseball, and softball—were chosen to serve as the backbone of Grand Park, but football, rugby, lacrosse, and field hockey are played there, too. Construction began in November 2011. A soft opening kicked off competitions this past March, while an official opening takes place later this month.
A STACKED LINEUP Grand Park has 31 multipurpose fields; 26 baseball and softball diamonds of various sizes and surfaces (either artificial turf, bluegrass, or Bermuda grass); seven concession stands/restrooms, two tournament headquarters/maintenance 30 HOME-A-RAMA | JUNE 2014

buildings; and 10 miles of paved trails, including access to the Monon Trail. Two indoor facilities, one for soccer and one for baseball and softball, will break ground later this year. Parking is spread out over the grounds and can accommodate 4,400 cars. “We positioned most of the parking around the park for easy egress and ingress, so you don’t have one long line getting in and out,” Henke says. Several artificial-turf fields are put to use when rain has rendered the naturalgrass surfaces unusable. The park has already hosted two-dozen college baseball games, including a three-game series between Notre Dame and Virginia Tech, because the teams’ fields were unplayable. “We had not expected in our first spring to have Division I baseball,” Cook says. Indy Eleven uses the park as a training headquarters. Two stakeholders, Indiana Bulls, a travel baseball team, and the Indiana Soccer Association, solicit, host, and manage all of the baseball and soccer tournaments. According to Cook, more than 5,000 baseball games and 5,000plus soccer matches are already booked
for the season. “It’s incredible to see all the excitement and fun that the kids and families are getting out of it,” Henke says.
AIMING FOR AN ECONOMIC HOME RUN But it’s not just players and parents who are getting a kick out of Grand Park. It’s attracting new citizens, too. In 2013, Westfield’s building permits were up 35 percent over 2012. “When I ask people why they moved here, there are three main things they tell me: schools, the trail system, and Grand Park,” Cook says. “Our residents are proud of it.” An ambitious downtown-Westfield revitalization project named Grand Junction Park & Plaza is slated to break ground later this year. It’s a 3- to 4-acre, centrally located space to host festivals and special events, connect trailways, and serve as both a gathering spot for residents and an attraction for Grand Park visitors. “The park downtown will really contribute to the overall visit to Westfield,”
Cook says. This summer, construction is scheduled to start on Grand Park Village, located on the south side of Grand Park. Henke Development Group devised the plan for the 220-acre site, which will feature a large lake circled by a boardwalk, as well as multifamily housing, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and Monon Trail access. “With the lake and the boardwalk, we’re trying to establish a Cape Cod feel with comfortable, cottage-type buildings,” Henke says. The idea is that families can spend time between games at the village instead of driving around looking for food and activities. It hasn’t taken long for Cook to see the Grand Park investment paying off. “We already have people moving here who choose us over another nearby location because of the excitement of the park,” he says. “We have businesses that may not be related to the hospitality industry, but they like the overall vision of the city. Businesses and residents want to be here. That’s the overall culture we’re trying to create.”

SUPPORT GROUP The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis advocates for members and provides helpful resources for consumers BY JESSICA SPARKS
T
he Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis may be best known for its regular analysis of building permits in the nine-county Indianapolis area; however, the association does much more than tally numbers. With more than 500 members, BAGI is one of the area’s largest professional organizations for construction companies and related businesses. The association provides networking opportunities, industry advocates, and a set of quality standards for anyone who becomes a member. “Membership in a professional trade association is not required,” says BAGI CEO Steve Lains. However, when someone joins a group like BAGI, it shows an ambition to be professional and grow his or her business, Lains points out. BAGI also serves another group— consumers. Members of the Builders Association agree to adhere to the Quality Assurance Builder Standards, which give homeowners and remodeling clients a way to measure their project against an industryapproved set of benchmarks. The guidelines can help both homeowners and builders address any performance-related concerns that may come up before, during, and after a job is finished.
“Most of the issues that occur between builder and owner are over uncommunicated expectations,” Lains says. Homeowners can request a copy of the standards from their builder. BAGI’s website (bagi.com) is a great resource for consumers who feel overwhelmed by the long and sometimes tedious homebuilding process. The site allows homebuyers to search for a

member builder that’s within their price range and desired geographical area or for a home that’s move-in ready. “You can get an idea of what kind of builder someone is,” Lains says. Users can also browse for a remodeling business that fits their needs, such as a company that specializes in historic renovations or one that can help with aging in place, or they can find products and
services like cabinets, landscaping, heating and cooling, and pool installation. The site offers a broad base of advice for homebuyers. For example, consumers looking to build a home can research reasons to choose new construction, how to decide upon a builder, and options for financing. For Lains, providing these tools to consumers is an extremely important part of what BAGI does. “Your home is the biggest purchase you’ll make, and I see people spend more time picking out a puppy than a builder,” he says. Lains is often asked how he suggests people search for a builder. He always recommends the five Rs: research, reputation, responsiveness, reliability, and relationship. “People forget that the building process is emotional, and it’s long,” Lains says. “They need to be diligent going through with the right questions.” Resources for all five Rs are available through BAGI and its website, which also links directly to houzz.com, a site devoted to trends in home design. Lains says it has become a powerful resource for those looking to build. “Several consumers have brought their iPads to meetings with their builder to show what they like,” he says. BANK ON IT
Home-A-Rama’s presenting sponsor is a strong supporter of both the new-construction industry and those looking to purchase a home BY SHARI HELD
S
ince its founding in 1999, First Internet Bank has made developing new homes and helping people purchase a home a top priority. Though the bank itself doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar presence, it has forged financial partnerships with local developers in more than 20 active Central Indiana communities. It has financed or is committed to financing 29 area “spec” homes, with a variety of price points from $100,000 to $900,000. That’s an investment of more than $27 million. In 2013, First Internet Bank provided financing for three luxury homes featured in Home-A-Rama at The Village of WestClay. This year, the bank is helping finance the construction of an upscale Home-A-Rama residence in Brookside, a community in Westfield. And this time around, First Internet Bank has expanded its support of the local construction industry by becoming presenting sponsor of 2014 Home-A-Rama. “We think this partnership is a great opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to Central Indiana real estate—both residential mortgage and commercial lending,” says David Becker, president and CEO.
FINANCING HOMEBUILDING AND BUYING Several years ago, while other local lenders scaled back their financial commitments to commercial real estate (or exited the line of business altogether), First Internet Bank strengthened its commitment to the local market. Over the last four years, the bank has helped key customers and prospects with millions of
dollars in critical financing that provided a boon for new housing inventory. The bank also upped the ante in support of commercial real-estate projects, providing competitive rates and a variety of loan options for both long- and shortterm credit up to $10 million. And it grew its commercial-loan business to encompass the Midwest and the Southwest. That strategy paid off. The bank’s commercial loans more than doubled the first quarter of 2014 compared to the first quarter of 2013. The residential-mortgage side, featuring an award-winning mortgage-lending program, is another key focus for First Internet Bank. “We have great rates, easy-to-use technology, and expert service to help homeowners find the right loan program for their needs,” Becker says. The bank offers homeowners and potential homeowners a variety of loan programs—FHA and VA loans with low down-payment options, jumbo loans, home-equity loans and lines of credit, and both fixed-rate and adjustablerate mortgages. First Internet Bank was named the top Online Mortgage Originator in the 2013 Mortgage Technology Awards and was recognized as one of the “Best Banks to Work For” by American Banker, a leading industry magazine, the same year.
HOMETOWN ROOTS First Internet Bank, the first statechartered FDIC-insured institution to operate solely via the Internet, offers a full complement of banking services to customers in 50 states. But its heart and
soul—and its headquarters—are solidly based in Indiana. Becker, the bank’s founder, was born in Indianapolis and grew up in the westside neighborhood of Eagledale. After graduating from Monrovia High School, he gave up a full scholarship to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to study political science and business administration at DePauw University. Rather than attend law school after graduation, Becker opted to continue his education in the real world. He began his career in the managementtrainee program of General Electric Credit Corp., followed by a brief stint at the Indiana Credit Union League. But Becker found his true calling as a serial entrepreneur. Over the years, he parlayed his background in banking, his fascination with the power of the Internet, and his unique visionary talents to found several Internet-based businesses, including First Internet Bank. 2001 was a banner year for Becker. Ernst & Young recognized him as the Midwest region’s Entrepreneur of the Year in the financial-services category, and he sold one of his companies—Virtual Financial Services Inc.—for $50 million. His optimistic outlook and quest for turning ideas into reality continue to reap dividends. “The popularity of Internet and mobile banking continues to accelerate,” Becker says. “We launched the bank in 1999 with the belief that electronic channels would supplant traditional banking offices. Nationwide, Internet banking has become consumers’ preferred banking method— twice as popular as branch banking.” JUNE 2014 | HOME-A-RAMA 37

GOING THE EXTRA MILE Home-A-Rama’s charity partner, the St. Vincent Cancer Walk, supports mobile screenings and creative therapy BY LAURA KRUTY
I
t’s hard to ignore the importance of medical screenings. Not only can they paint a picture of one’s overall health, but should they detect a disease or a condition at an early stage, the odds are greater that treatment will lead to a better outcome. Yet not everyone receives the screenings they need. The seemingly everchanging recommendations for exactly which ones to get and at what age can be confusing. Some may skip them due to the tests’ costs, a lack of information or health insurance, or the belief that they’re already in good health. Bringing potentially life-saving services to those who otherwise may not receive them is the mission of St. Vincent Hospital’s mobile-screening van. That’s one of the beneficiaries of this year’s St. Vincent Cancer Walk, taking place Sept. 20 in Zionsville’s Lions Park. A portion of the 38 HOME-A-RAMA | JUNE 2014
proceeds from a VIP event held in conjunction with Home-A-Rama supports the walk, as well. St. Vincent Indianapolis’s art-therapy program is another recipient of funds raised from the walk. An art studio allows patients to work on paintings, jewelry, and other media in a group setting. Connecting with others about their situation is an important part of the therapy process. “They can talk about things that they’re uncomfortable talking about with their families,” says Nancy Frick, director of advancement for St. Vincent Foundation. “They can share more openly in a more supportive way.” For patients who physically can’t go to the studio, a bedside version of the program can come to them. As of now, the service is only available at the northwestside facility, but the goal is to expand it to other St. Vincent locations.
The screening van operates Monday through Saturday, heading to workplaces and low-income neighborhoods in several Central Indiana counties. It provides 7,000 tests each year, most of which are mammograms. Additional screenings include those for cholesterol, blood pressure, and general health and wellness. A second unit is planned to be up and running later this year. “The van that we have is busy all the time,” Frick says. Now in its fifth year, the current iteration of the St. Vincent Cancer Walk evolved from the Weekend to End Breast Cancer, a two-day, 38-mile event. Though the walk drew plenty of participants, the length made it fairly challenging. Organizers also wanted a broader focus of patient support rather than just concentrating on breast cancer. “Many people sign up because they

want to support a particular cancer patient,” Frick says. “The vast majority have had a cancer experience, either themselves or a close friend or family member.” Most who participate do so as part of a team, banding together with friends, family members, and co-workers to raise money. Frick says there are a number of ways people have gone about gathering donations, including selling jewelry, hosting a bingo party or bake sale, and partnering with a restaurant that contributes one night’s sales. Various fundraising levels come with incentive prizes. Inspiration is everywhere on event day, from the walk ambassadors sharing their stories of fight and survival to the cheers that greet participants as they cross the finish line. Previous walks have featured a dove release, live entertainment, kids’ activities, a merchandise area, and tents with free health screenings. If past results are any indication, this year’s walk will be a success. The 2013 event netted about $400,000, and in the five years that the walk (in any form) has taken place, money raised has exceeded $2 million.
