I PURSUE A SMALL HANDFUL of hobbies regularly, but collecting is not one

of them. I have seen impressive displays of muscle cars, vintage Apple computers, and Star Wars memorabilia in other people’s homes. In mine, however, you might find a drawer full of eyeglasses I bought on impulse and never wore, or a stack of art prints left unframed. The few objects I amass in quantity are kept hidden and seldom used. After reading “Material World,” Bailey Briscoe’s rundown of textile retailers and upholsterers (p. 22), I might be convinced to dust off my sewing machine and sift through a forgotten stock of fabric and notions stashed away in my basement. In the past, I have sewn items like curtains, throw pillows, and slipcovers, but I could use some motivation to revive my inner seamstress. I’ve always been drawn to vibrant colors and patterns, which are plentiful in the Chatham Hills residence featured on pages 30 to 39. property often comes into consideration for the homeowner only when it’s time to sell, but a few small projects can make coming home a joy on any given day. Dressing up your doorway and front walk can make your entry look more appealing, inviting, and welcoming to all who approach. “It’s kind of sad that people are more interested in curb appeal when they leave their houses, when we think of how many times we come up to our houses,” says Laura Amaral, a residential lighting consultant at Indiana Lighting Center, with showrooms in Indianapolis, Castleton, and Greenwood. Indiana Lighting Center and other local service providers have advice on how you can make your exterior look stunning from the sidewalk perspective. Livening up lighting and landscaping, freshening entry doors and hardware, and perking up paths or porches offer great opportunities to give the front of your dwelling a makeover at any stage of homeownership.

front of a home that je-ne-sais-quoi that draws you in. Amaral defines the concept as that which “creates a feeling of happiness in your home.” She adds, “Lighting is one of the best and most cost-effective ways to create that feeling.” Personal taste and Pinterest inspiration can help, but the style of a house should inform the look of any fixtures. While Cape Cod architecture goes well with coastal lighting looks, a ranch might become “the coolest home on the block” with a more midcentury-modern design. “When you’re talking about the exterior, the style of your home actually gets a vote,” Amaral says. On trend are updated traditional lights with clean, contemporary lines, she adds. You can match the era of your abode with a modern interpretation of the fixture design instead of trying to find the exact vintage model. Other elements to consider include placement, socket style, and level of light needed. Changing a fixture’s location means rewiring, which can significantly add to the cost of a project. “One of the biggest mistakes people make when they are purchasing the light is the size,” Amaral says. The general rule is choosing a fixture that is about 20 to 30 percent of the doorway size, she explains. Besides the main entry fixture, lighting can also be used to accentuate architectural elements of the structure or landscaping. “You’re layering the light from the curb all the way up to the door. You’re getting little treats,” Amaral says. “You can put a spot on a beautiful tree or a part of the home that you want to enhance.” Post lights can complete the whole look, she mentions, and most of these fixtures are manufactured to fit a standard column. Even if an existing post light doesn’t need to be replaced, a coat of black rust-protectant paint can spruce up a faded finish. Amaral also recommends investing in quality clear, filament LED bulbs for any outdoor fixtures. Dashing doorways AS THE TRANSITION to the interior of a

home, front doors have a huge influence on curb appeal. Aesthetics are important, but how you use your entry should be foundational to your door and hardware choices. “Functionality is key,” says Emily Hassett, interior designer with Franklin Window & Door, which operates within Glass House Gallery in Carmel. “Some people may want a certain look, but when you ask them about how they use their home, it’s not realistic.” For starters, know which way you want your door to swing. If you need more security, some doors have multiple locking mechanisms. Hassett says touch keypad entrances are an option, though most customers still choose traditional, tech-free models. Steel doors remain popular because of their flexibility, Hassett says. They can work on a European-style ranch home or a sleek, modern structure. “That’s the beauty of steel—it’s completely customizable,” she says. “It looks great on everything.” This material, however, can be costly. Glass House Gallery offers a steel product imported from The Netherlands that stays ice-free during Midwestern winters. For homeowners who want the appearance but don’t have a limitless budget, you can get a similar look without the hefty price tag in a high-quality aluminum door. As always, the style of home should play a role in selection. Franklin’s designers can walk you through the process of choosing a style that fits the look of the house and your personal taste, or you can work with your builder or architect to find the right door. “I love a pop of color, but in order for people to pull it off well, it’s got to be cohesive with the style of the house,” Hassett says. “People are looking for a bold front door—it could be the shape or the color.” Whether you’re customizing a new door or sprucing up an older model, hardware can make just as much of an impact as the door itself. “The hardware, we like to say, is jewelry for the door,” she says. “People are coming in open-minded and looking for a refresh. We’re seeing a lot of mixed metals.” 18

Last year’s preference for satin brass has evolved to mixing the finish with brushed nickel or black. Or pairing chrome with French antique brass. Since the front door is the transition into the home, finishes chosen for the primary entry can be carried through to interior door and cabinet hardware for a fully coordinated look.

Pretty pathways CRAGGY FRONT WALKS and cracked porches can create an eyesore, not to mention a safety hazard. If you need an upgrade or replacement, custom and decorative stamped concrete offer options to add pizzazz to front pathways at a lower price point than stones and pavers. “It’s not a big cost difference to go from your standard broom-finished concrete to stamped concrete,” says Marc Roland, owner of Indy Decorative Concrete, which pours front

porches and pathways, along with outdoor living spaces and pool areas, and installing pergolas. Plain-jane concrete runs about $18 to $20 per square foot, while decorative finishes that resemble slate, cobblestone, brick, or other more expensive materials cost $24 to $26 per square foot and give your home a more high-end ambience, he says. To get a contrasting look, technicians add color to the concrete before pouring it and then another color during the stamping process. “Right now, the gray colors are really in,” he says. “The wood look is definitely [also] hot right now—we’ll make a slab look like rustic wood planks. And there’s no staining necessary, none of the warping [over time], nothing like that.” His company also offers a sand matrix finish that appeals to customers with historic properties. Roland explains, “when a customer has an older home and they don’t want

the slab to look brand new, bleached out, or whitish,” they may opt for this process, which involves blowing off the top layer of the poured concrete. “It gives it more of a weathered look.” Another benefit of the sand matrix finish is the process provides more traction, since more of the sand in the concrete gets exposed. Unlike some other companies, Indy Decorative Concrete also avoids high-gloss sealers for a more natural finished look, Roland says. 20

Growing interest SEASONAL GREENERY and blooms can provide the proverbial cherry on top of the cake to fully showcase and enhance the beauty and appeal of your home’s exterior. “Almost any house can have some sort of pot or planter that would spruce up the entry,” says Mary Starnes, owner of The Windowbox Gardener in Indianapolis.

Using a customer’s own containers or ones her company chooses, The Windowbox Gardener can create miniature seasonal arrangements so people have “a show-stopping entry.” Starnes says when people choose containers for their front entryway, they often err by going too small. “You want them as big as you can get that’s not awkwardly placed,” she says. Avoid lots of smaller pots, a trend that has faded in favor of a container or pair of planters that serves as more of a bold statement. “Eighteen inches and up is ideal for giving an impact for the way flowers look from the road,” Starnes says. “I try to get one of the pots at the front to have enough substance so the plantings would have some oomph to them.” In addition to size, people often underestimate the number of plants needed to create an eye-catching display from the street, she adds. “The goal would always be to plant more versus less,” Starnes says. “People are shy to push plants together. We tend to stuff.” Sun and shade requirements are very important to determine the position of the pot, and homeowners should consider when the location gets direct or indirect light. Seasonal container gardens make the most impact when coordinated with any existing outdoor decor, such as wreaths, cushions, and holiday displays. The Windowbox Gardener can help install its namesake features, which can also be planted seasonally, but Starnes suggests window boxes for only the most dedicated gardeners. “If it dies, you can’t shuttle it into the garage.” she says. “You have to have the commitment to take care of it. It can be the biggest asset to a house, but it can be an eyesore.” If you want to elevate your exterior, but don’t know where to start, first make sure to learn the style of your home. Consider how you need it to function and how usage ties in with your personal style. Drapery Street WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING to outfit

your indoor or outdoor windows, Drapery Street can do it all. In fact, these different arenas overlap in some instances. Owner Caryn O’Sullivan often sees customers who present indoor lighting dilemmas that are actually best solved with outdoor products. “That’s why it’s important to work with very experienced people who are aware of these issues and have done similar projects before,” she says. O’Sullivan recommends starting with some visual inspiration. That can be a Pinterest image, a magazine clipping, or—if you’re getting too

overwhelmed—a visit to her Carmel showroom in the Indiana Design Center. From there, the Drapery Street team kicks off the interview process to help refine and clarify the project with inquiries about the room versus the rest of the home, the design style, desired functionality, and cost. The most important question is why. What problem are you attempting to solve? O’Sullivan says this is where a custom option really shines because there are variables for every type of blind or drapery. For instance, there are multiple levels of blackout curtains that will give you different results. The key to choosing the ideal product is to land where function, aesthetics, and budget meet.

It’s easy to be baffled by window treatments, but there are notable trends. Technology is hot right now, and we aren’t talking about just roller shades. PAH Upholstery Co. PAUL HOWARD COMES BY his occupation

as an upholsterer honestly. Born into a family of furniture makers, the owner of PAH Upholstery began honing his craft as a child in England. He brought his talents to the U.S. as an adult, joining his wife in Indy, and quickly realized his craftsman skills were needed here. Getting his start with chairs he sold at a Stutz Artists Association open house in 1997, Howard says the orders have rolled in steadily over the last 24 years, primarily through word of mouth. He credits these referrals to the brilliance of his traditional handiwork. “We do everything from Grandma’s rocking chair to fully custom-built furniture for commercial spaces,” Howard explains. Currently, PAH is doing a lot of upholstered silk walls, wrapped beds, and banquettes with hanging backs. With all of these once-old-school-nowtrending styles, Howard says fabric communicates the vibe. It’s key to achieving a modern look and feel. While custom-built pieces are the bones of the business—from design concept to completion—they also breathe new life into older items, like the recent restoration of an early-1900s Madden sofa set. Growing up in the furniture business has afforded Howard the knowledge of traditional construction methods, so he and his team are able to get an “almost identical” product that will last as long as the original. The construction is so good, in fact, that he is starting to see pieces he built over 20 years ago come back to him for a fabric facelift. And what materials are customers picking? golf course at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield with an eye toward celebrating the topography and landscape of Hamilton County. For those fortunate enough to live in this community, access to gorgeous views, stately homes, and recreational opportunities is par for the course. One fairly recent addition to the neighborhood is a young couple who originally met in Chicago and moved to Indy in 2012 when an opportunity to work with family presented itself. Two small children have since joined the brood. The family’s shift north from storied Meridian-Kessler to Chatham Hills created a few rumblings

of culture shock, but they took it in stride, welcoming the chance to get in on the ground floor of building a community of their own in this fast-growing region. “A lot of people who aren’t from Indianapolis, or even Indiana, seem to be moving to Westfield right now because they want to be part of something new,” the homeowner says. “And because everyone’s new, it’s been that much easier to meet neighbors and make friends.” Although they’re excited about being part of an emerging development, the homeowners—who requested that their names be withheld—didn’t want their own residence to look

brand new. Instead, they aimed to foster a patina of age and lived-in comfort, but with all the space, luxury, and amenities of a custom build. Architectural designer Steve Goldberg of Goldberg Design Group oversaw the plans for the house. Having already worked on several dozen homes in the Chatham Hills community, he brought a solid base of knowledge and neighborhood familiarity to the table. “I already knew one of the homeowners professionally,” he says. “It was quite an honor when I found out they wanted to work with me.” 2021 | IM HOME

[ GOALS AND VISION ] THOUGH THE HOMEOWNER admits she wel-

comed guidance, she and her husband had some firm ideas about what they wanted to achieve with the home’s design. “There’s a fine line between customers who don’t know what they want, and customers who want to dictate every element of the house,” Goldberg describes. “This couple was a solid balance of being able to provide good direction without trying to micromanage the process.” The connection was instant when the homeowners met with Linda Mordoh, owner and head designer of Carmel-based Savvy Decor, over lunch at Cafe Patachou.

[ GRAND ENTRANCE ] THE FIRST IMPRESSION of the home

starts from the approach: white columns, black shutters, and a wide, red-bricked front porch that begs for rocking chairs and glasses of iced tea all work together to establish inviting curb appeal. “The homeowners had a clear vision of what they wanted the exterior to look like,” Goldberg says. “They showed me a picture of a Southern Lowcountry home. Based on my notes and our conversations, I came up with a floor plan to accommodate their wishes.” Inside the front door, a handsome buffet from Midland Art and Antiques makes a dramatic statement backed by hand-painted magnolia wallpaper and a gold-framed mirror. “We brought a lot of our own pieces from the old house, but we’ve found opportunities to use them here in totally new ways,” the homeowner mentions. “I like a bit of heritage mixed in with modern and pieces that tell a story.” Case in point, a media cabinet has been recast as a sink and vanity in the half-bath off the entry.

“She’s got a ton of experience with new construction and really understands the process,” the homeowner says. “She was quick to point out what we needed to think about to keep us on track, on budget, and on schedule, which I really appreciated. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with ideas and end up scrolling Wayfair for hours at a time. She helped me zero in on what I needed and what was most appropriate.” Admiration between the homeowners and Mordoh remains mutual. “I met them through their builder, Scott Campbell [owner of Scott Campbell Custom Homes],” Mordoh notes. “I thought they were a very attractive power couple, both having successful careers. We talked, they asked all the right questions, and hopefully I answered them with wit and authority.” For direction, the homeowner showed Mordoh some photos of plaid coats and vests she’d pulled from a J. Crew catalog. “I have a very preppy aesthetic. I like classic looks and neutrals like beige, black, and brown,” the homeowner explains. “That was our blueprint, and we just rolled with it from there.” “When the homeowner gave me the inspiration of J. Crew meets Ralph Lauren, I knew I had a client who wanted something outside the box, and that always makes me happy,” Mordoh laughs.

THE HOMEOWNERS SPEND most of their time in an open living area subtly divided into zones to accommodate different uses. Views through a wall of windows to the golf course beyond bring in the outdoors, with trees offering colorful scenery in the fall and privacy in the spring and summer. The main level flows in a circular traffic pattern to create a sense of motion, especially functional during parties and get-togethers. A high trayed ceiling allows plenty of space for the tall brick fireplace, Ferguson light fixtures, and lots of breathing room in a plush, central seating area. An offset open dining space houses an oversized round table, again with windows to the verdant outdoors, for family dinners or buffet-style snack service during parties. The homeowner singles it out as one of her favorite spots. “I wanted it to have the feeling that you can open another bottle of wine here and linger with friends after dinner into the evening,” she says. 2021 | IM HOME

[ RAISING THE BAR ] GETTING THE PARTY STARTED, and keeping it going, was a priority for the homeowners from the beginning. “My parents had a small bar on the main floor of their home, and we traditionally hosted Christmas Eve for my family,” the homeowner recalls. “It was always the most popular gathering spot. I knew I wanted to recreate 34

the same kind of space here—an area to hang out and relax with guests that wasn’t hidden away in the corner of a dark basement.” In keeping with the golf course setting, the custom bar feels like the couple’s own personal clubhouse with tall plaid swivel stools and a mercuryglass backsplash. The kids can watch TV just around the corner, still visible through the two-sided fireplace, while the adults settle in for cocktails and

conversation. Beehler Kitchens & Bath out of Zionsville built the adjacent walk-in wine closet in addition to overseeing all the cabinetry in the bar, kitchen, bathrooms, and pantry. For a whimsical touch, the blackand-white hex-tile flooring spells out “Bottoms Up” behind the bar. “I saw something similar in a Newark Airport restaurant bathroom that says, ‘Looking good!’” the homeowner says. “I loved it, and I wanted to find

[ THE GREAT OUTDOORS ] THE BACK PATIO EXTENDS the length of the bar, living room, and dining area to expand the main living space and is framed in by clear dividers for uninterrupted views to the 14th hole below. Cozy outdoor chairs and couches, along with another fireplace and television, support al fresco socializing. “I really like how such a large portion of the main floor opens up to the covered porch,” Goldberg says. “This is a double lot, and the grade is steep at the back. I was trying to keep the house on the hill before it dropped off too far. Being aware of the appropriate space to get the walkout basement to work was one of the biggest challenges of the project.”

[ PERFECT PLACEMENT ] BEHIND THE KITCHEN, Maria Baer—

a.k.a. The Baer Minimalist—carved out a pantry that even Marie Kondo would covet. Items go into labeled baskets containing everything from snacks and boxes of cereal to bottles of olive oil and canned goods. More pride-of-place shelves display glassware, serving platters, and family heirlooms, and an extended countertop has been deemed the prep station for outdoor grilling on the deck. Continuing around the corner, a mud room holds storage cubbies, and a desk in the laundry room anchors a wall filled with artwork by the kids. The attached garage doubles as a basketball half-court dressed up with an IU logo (the homeowners are both Hoosier alumni) and an electronic scoreboard for pick-up games. A home office and a full bath command a section of the first floor near the front door. Down the road, this area could transition into a private suite with its own entrance for guests or parents. “We’re just trying to think ahead so the house can grow with us as the needs of our family change,” the homeowner says.

[ TAKING THE HEAT ] A HUGE ISLAND WITH SEATING for six is the primary focal point of the open

kitchen. Above the cooktop, an Alexa-controlled television swings out over the hood, hiding storage space behind. Joe Beck, owner of Indiana Audio Video in Zionsville, handled all the audio/visual components of the home. Like many contractors with whom the couple consulted, he quickly became a friend. “My working relationship with the homeowners was amazing right from the beginning,” Mordoh says. “And, as it often does, our relationship went from client to friends.” Architectural Brick and Tile installed the floors, Plumbers Supply Co. managed all the pipe work, and Lee Supply was the source of the Miele appliances in the kitchen area. Another example of the homeowner’s penchant for pieces that tell a story, the Turkish rug that lies between the cooktop and the island is a memento from one of her husband’s work trips.

[ SUITE RETREAT ] TUCKED AWAY BEHIND THE BAR, the

first-floor master suite opens into an airy white bedroom with clean blue accents and a whitewashed spa-style bathroom that showcases a walk-in shower and exterior doors opening out onto the front patio of the house. Here, the homeowners can enjoy being able to walk directly to the porch swing, where they can sit and keep an eye on their children playing in the culde-sac outside.

[ UPPER CLASS ] THE KIDS CLAIM THE UPSTAIRS LEVEL with his-and-hers bedroom suites decorated in plaid and Big 10 sports flags for the son and antique girly pink details for the daughter. The homeowners happily accepted twin headboards, a daybed, a glider, and a chandelier from friends to outfit the rooms with items that hold personal meaning. A desk once owned by the homeowner’s grandfather fits right into the overall scheme. A work in progress, the guest room will honor the homeowner’s father-inlaw—a former naval officer and football player—with family photos, a vintage flag, and other nostalgic memorabilia when complete. Bringing the home full circle, a playroom for the kids provides ample space for virtual learning and creative arts-and-crafts projects. “I think the house turned out close to the homeowner’s vision,” Mordoh says. “Hopefully, our input with color, fabric, and furnishings exceeded her expectations.” After 18 months in the works, the family moved in last July. Working with suppliers during the COVID pandemic proved challenging—the homeowners had Mordoh and other contractors leave samples in the garage to review when they couldn’t meet in person. In the end, though, the effort proved worth it. “There’s so much warmth here,” the homeowner says. “It’s an easy place to live. We don’t have any plans to move again; this is our forever home.”

A Carmel family jumps headﬁrst into a backyard transformation that includes a new pool, deck, outdoor kitchen, entertainment area, lush landscaping, and more.

WHAT CAN YOU DO

when your ideal house has a lackluster backyard? You take Mother Nature’s blank, green slate and make it your own. That’s what northwest Carmel homeowners Chris and Stephanie chose to do after building their dream home at The Woods at Lions Creek in 2013. The residence already had an ample lot, but its outdoor features began and ended with just a small deck in back. “I had a pool growing up,” says Stephanie, who asked that the couple’s last name be withheld. “I wanted to have a pool. I wanted a covered area, and I liked the idea of a pergola.” Three years after purchasing the property, the couple started to make their dream come true. They met Lowell

Rolsky, owner of Pro Care Horticultural Services, at the Indiana Flower & Patio Show and together created their own backyard escape. They tackled the project in pieces, starting with the deck and pool. A large pool house followed, with a convenient outdoor kitchen and pergola-covered sitting area, complete with a fireplace. The patio expanded to provide more seating and room for gas fire tables. Finally, overall landscaping and an extensive water feature added texture and sound to the outdoor ambience. The once-bare backyard is now the perfect destination for the couple, their children, and a lovable golden Labrador retriever named Lily. “The landscape was important to them,” Rolsky says. “Having something that drew them into the backyard was the end goal.”

Decked out

s the first step outdoors, the new deck spans the back of the house, incorporating a sitting area, hot tub, and stairs leading to and from the home’s spare bathroom. Rolsky played outside the lines with his design, adding curves to the deck’s footprint and interspersing lush greenery and landscaping throughout the area. The deck’s staggered levels eliminated the need for railings that could have impeded the flow from inside out. Rolsky and the homeowners opted for Adek flooring—an encapsulated plastic product that can withstand wet footprints, hot sun, and Indiana winters—for the deck surface. “Anything that has wood in it is going to do the same thing that wood does—it’s going to fade, it’s going to swell,” Rolsky says. “That’s why we try to secure people in an all-plastic deck surface floor. It has great textures to it. It comes in many different colors and has a 50-year warranty.” The deck now includes a sitting area for enjoying cocktails in the evening or supervising the kids when they are in the pool. The recessed hot tub is nestled near the back door with its opening at deck level, allowing homeowners to enjoy a quick dip in luxury even during cold winter evenings. “People like to have spas, but they don’t realize that if the spa is too far away, they’re never going to use it,” Rolsky says.

The versatile outdoor space provides plenty of options for leisure activities, such as grilling, dining, going for a swim, soaking in the hot tub, socializing by the ﬁreplace, or simply lounging poolside.

making a splash

erma Pools built the large, rectangular basin, working closely with Pro Care to ensure the elevation, location, and placement remained consistent with the backyard design. Chris grew up with a similarly shaped pool, and he was happy to stick with a traditional style that would not require a specially designed cover. Its location directly behind the house means the kids can be shooting hoops in the water while parents keep an eye on them from indoors. It also means the adults can gather on the deck or around the firepit near the water feature, close enough to watch over the children without cramping their style. Rolsky and the homeowners eschewed pavers in favor of travertine stone with a brick inlay around the pool, connecting the pool house to the deck, the main home, and comfortable sitting areas. The result is a warm surface whose natural texture complements the lush background of the surrounding landscape. The pavers also stay cool in the heat, Stephanie says. “The reality is a swimming pool can be nothing but a detriment to the average homeowner,” Rolsky says. “It’s a hole in the ground with water. But if you create an extension of the living space and you make the space something where people want to be, then it’s so different than just having a pool. Now you’ve created a pool environment—this wonderful opportunity to enjoy yourselves.”

f 2020 taught us anything, it’s that we all need to be comfortable while staying home. Variety helps, too. Why gather around the dining-room table on a warm spring evening when you can eat dinner by the pool instead? A patio table just beyond the home’s back doors provides easy access to and from the indoor kitchen. There is an additional table near the water feature for added ambience. 44

Rolsky worked with the couple to build an inviting, rustic outdoor kitchen, outfitting the area with everything necessary to host a party or just flip a few pancakes on a weekend morning. He selected Twin Eagle appliances, including a fullsized refrigerator that is concealed by a custom wood door. As an added convenience, Rolsky attached the sink and fridge to the home’s existing irrigation system, which enables the entire backyard to be winterized at the same

time. Landscape lighting throughout the outdoor kitchen area makes the space more inviting, especially during lazy summer evenings. A gas grill is ready for a couple of filet steaks, while a flat-top griddle makes the aforementioned pancakes a breeze. With quartz and marble surfaces, the kitchen continues the natural feel that dominates the backyard. Rolsky added extra storage space, including shelving and cabinetry, to reduce trips back to the house for dishes and supplies.

“People don’t always understand the value of storage and the value of having a sink and at least an under-the-counter refrigerator,” Rolsky says. The roof above the kitchen area extends into a pergola that tops a comfortable sitting area. Judy Bates of JB Designs helped the couple choose Summer Classics furniture for the outdoor living room and around the pool. A coordinating sectional sofa and chairs face an open hearth, ensuring that the space can be used during the

cooler fall and spring months. The fireplace uses natural gas, so no need to worry about smoke making its way to the dining table. Two fire tables in the backyard also run on gas and can be lit for warmth or covered to use the full tabletop surfaces. “I would say using those things all year-round would be kind of extreme, but certainly you can get a couple extra months out of it without any problem. Using it into December is not a problem,” Rolsky says. 2021 | IM HOME

natural beauty

n elaborate water feature completes the backyard. With its meandering falls and multiple tubs filled with river rocks, it is pleasing to both the eye and the ear. If it gets a little loud, the homeowners can opt to turn off one or all the pumps with a push of a button. At night, built-in lights create new artwork as the natural light wanes and darkness takes over. Rolsky installed landscaping and copper sculpture pieces for added visual interest. He crafted the feature from brown sandstone found in Indiana and Tennessee. “We handpicked every rock we put in there,” Rolsky says. “We cut and shaped them to meet our particular needs whenever it was necessary.” Lush greenery and flowering plants add color and depth to the water feature and flow seamlessly into the backyard’s landscape. There are few places in the backyard that don’t have some sort of plant life, from the deck to the pool house area to the perimeter, where the foliage adds a measure of privacy. Rolsky incorporated many broadleafed evergreens in the backyard. He also included rhododendrons, azaleas, ground cover, and perennial plants that will grow together without looking overgrown or crowded. “The true test of a landscape is the test of time,” Rolsky says. The backyard has lived up to its potential, the homeowners say. It was a game changer last year, when the kids were home and the family had to keep their distance from others. As people were encouraged to spend more time outdoors, the backyard was the perfect destination for being together while staying socially distant. Plus, it meant the family had more room to enjoy each other’s company. “We’ve used this outdoor space so much,” Stephanie says. “By the fall, we would already be having people inside. But we were able to enjoy our time outdoors.”

An earthy color scheme and materials give the sheltered kitchen and outdoor lounge area an organic look that blends with the rocky waterfall in the background. The water feature, which emits a calming ambient sound, is embedded with plants and botanical sculptures.
