We talked with five members of the jury on what it’s like to be a part of such a highly regarded event.

INDIANAPOLIS BALLET INSTRUCTOR Roberta Wong watches as eager pupils grip the barre and mimic her movements. They raise a ﬂexed foot and tap it, ever so slightly, against the ﬂoor again and again, looking forward with lifted chins and straightened backs. The students aren’t aspiring ballerinas, though. They are Parkinson’s patients, and they gather weekly at IB’s downtown studios for hourlong sessions designed to improve motor skills and alleviate pain. The class operates as part of Dance for PD, which provides researched-backed dance courses for those with Parkinson’s to enjoy movement, music, and community. Students in IB’s classes learn stretches and basic steps in a variety of styles, including ballet, modern, and folk, and they gather with the same goal: to heal and grow. “The arts and dance help with health, and this is the way we do it,” Wong says.

BROWN COUNTY “Brown County, especially during the fall, is just gorgeous, and you have the rolling hills,” Sorvig says. “It’s such a beautiful area with lakes, rivers, and trails. Then you have the idyllic small town, Anytown, USA, right there with Nashville, so that could be a great one-two punch.”

INDIANA FILMMAKERS HOPE a recent legislative victory will mean the end of losing Hoosier stories to out-of-state film locations. Indiana Senate Bill 361 went into effect July 1 and offers a tax credit up to 30 percent for film and media production expenses. Heartland Film Artistic Director Greg Sorvig says supporting area projects benefits creatives and contributes to the overall state economy. “It’s about bringing economic development and stimulation to the state,” he says. “It’s not just about doing a media project. We’re really excited to help bring economic development, to bring tourism, to bring jobs, and to truly bring an industry here to Indiana around film.” Here, he shares six locations he’d love to see on the big screen.

For his mural in the Indiana State Museum’s new Gallery One, artist Artur Silva combed through 500,000 of the museum’s acquisitions but could choose only a handful for 136 Objects in the Collection. It took Silva about six months to complete the 23-foot-by-11-foot composition, which is permanent. He calls it a “filtered, narrow overlook” of the collection, but it’s undoubtedly an interesting one, too. We took a closer view at some of the items Silva included.

As the fall arts season gets underway, Ticket checks in with a pair of new leaders and one longtime theater champion on the verge of retirement to find out what they have in store for audiences.

THE PHOENIX THEATRE made its reputation by presenting progressive, inclusive, sometimes controversial plays that challenged audiences to see the world from different points of view. In her first full season as the Phoenix’s artistic director, Constance Macy plans to stay true to that vision while still

best of times, and, as you know, these are not exactly the best of times. It’s COVID (still). It’s attendance. It’s boxoffice revenue. It’s inflation. It’s the Great Resignation. And yet there is optimism and excitement as the fall season opens. It marks a new beginning for arts groups— and their leaders, such as Constance Macy, who became the Phoenix Theatre’s artistic director in June. While not brand-new to the job, Kristian Little Stricklen, president of the Madam Walker Legacy Center, is guiding the organization into a new chapter. And for Janet Allen, artistic director of the Indiana Repertory Theatre, this new season is not a beginning, but actually her last with the theater, where she worked for nearly 40 years. Here’s what the trio is looking forward to and what keeps them awake at night.

making sure the theater at 705 N. Illinois St. is “busy and active, friendly and fun.”

“I want this to be a cultural center,” she says. “It’s not the Phoenix Theatre as it was in the church [at 749 N. Park Ave., its home till 2018]. It’s this huge place that has to beTofilled.”dothat, this season, the Phoenix will present four shows, starting with Tick, Tick … Boom! a musical by Jonathan Larson, the writer of RENT, and concluding in April with Two Mile Hollow, a comedy about a wealthy white family played by Black, indigenous, and actors of color.Tokeep the building humming, the calendar is filled with productions by other companies, including American Lives Theatre, Summit Performance Indianapolis, Ben Asaykwee, Freetown Village, Phoenix Rising Dance Company, Eclipse, and Indy Shakes. Tickets are available for individual shows, but for the $440 Cultural Centre Star package, you can see everything. “It’s a taste of Indy, except it’s arts,” Macy says. Her career in local theater dates back to the ’80s, when, at Indiana University, she had a role in The Visit along with Vincent Ventresca, whose credits include Fun Bobby on Friends and the title role in the 2000 version of The Invisible Man. A year later, she starred in On the Verge at the Phoenix Theatre,

The center plans “to be much more intentional in uplifting Madam’s legacy. Madam was not an artist. Madam was an entrepreneur. She was a philanthropist. She pushed for social justice. In addition to the arts, those are things we focus on now.” her first professional work in Indianapolis other than the Indianapolis Shakespeare Festival.Morethan 30 years later, in a career where she has worked steadily as an actress, she finds herself the third artistic director—and first woman—in the theater’s 39-year history. “It’s kind of amazing to be based here and have had the acting career that I’ve had,” sheRewindsays. to three years ago, though, and Macy found that opportunities for acting roles were drying up. “Even before COVID, I was thinking, This sucks. I’m going backwards in my career,” she says. “I wondered if there was something else for me to do. And I couldn’t think of what it could possibly be.” This past December, she was at Bill Simmons’s house on New Year’s Eve, pondering her next move. Simmons, at the time the Phoenix’s artistic director, was preparing to give up that position to concentrate on fundraising. The Phoenix opened its $11.2 million home on Illinois Street in 2018 and still needed to raise about $4 million to pay off loans. (The amount is now around $3.4 million.) Simmons was looking for a successor. The Phoenix had offered the artistic director position to three people, all of whom turned it down. “Presumably,” Macy says, “because it’s risky not knowing if these fundraising goals are going to be met. I believe that they will be because I know Bill.” He proposed she take on the interim artistic director role, and after an official offer from the board, she decided to give it a try. In June, she dropped the “interim” title. “I have lots of opinions,” she says with a smile. “I thought, Oh, that’s just me sitting around, giving my opinions. That’s what I thought the job was—picking plays.” Macy does read a lot of plays. But the job is much bigger than that, she says. It’s ideas, planning strategy and implementation, and figuring out ways to get into the community and have a larger impact. She also faces the challenge of getting patrons back in the doors. As of this writing, the Phoenix has presented four plays since January, and all played to small houses. Reasons range from “I’ll come if I don’t have to wear a mask” to “If everyone isn’t wearing a mask, I’m not“It’scoming.”beentricky like that,” she says. “We have to reach everyone at their comfort level.” EVERYONE’S TENUREAT their job should start as well as Kristian Little Strick-len’s has. She took over as president of the Madam Walker Legacy Center in April 2021, about a year after Netflix released the miniseries Self Made, the story of Walker’s rise to millionaire status. Thanks to the show, all of a sudden, “Madam was on everyone’s mind,” Stricklen says. And because of the pandemic, the Walker had pivoted to virtual programming that allowed anyone with an internet connection to check in with the organization. “We were able to expand our reach much quicker than we would have.” Then in November 2021, comedian Mike Epps returned to his hometown to film his newest Netflix special, Indiana Mike, in the 900-seat Walker Theatre. The show, which was released in March, begins with a gorgeous nighttime shot of the Walker building and the announcer saying, “This was real important to Mike Epps to come back to Indianapolis to represent and put his city on the map.” The building, which had just undergone a $15 million renovation, positively glowed. In June, the theater hosted a sold-out concert featuring Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds to celebrate the Walker’s 95th anniversary. Stricklen hopes to continue that momentum this fall with a variety of programming scheduled to include the Madam Walker mural unveiling on October 13, a hair competition on November 23, Laughing on the Avenue featuring J. Anthony Brown & Friends two days later, and two Holiday on the Avenue events on December 10 and 17. In addition, the center plans “to be much more intentional in uplifting Madam’s legacy,” she says. “Madam was not an artist. Madam was an entrepreneur. She was a philanthropist. In addition to the arts, those are things we focus on now.” Running the Walker has proved to be a difficult job; Stricklen is the 10th person to take on the role since 2000. When the board was looking to replace Judith Thomas, Stricklen, then a board member, thought the next president “needed to be able to have a real understanding of the community and what the Black community needed.” She felt she could bring that to the table. She was wellknown and knew she could make a difference. “And so far, so good,” she says.

University led the structure’s restoration, and IUPUI now handles day-to-day operations. “When we need things fixed, they’re the ones who fix it for us,” Stricklen says. The arrangement leaves the team the time and money to focus on fundraising and programming.“You have to either have a partner like we have,” she says, “or an endowment, which we’re working on.” In the past year, the Walker board sold (or is in the process of selling) two buildings, at 501 and 719 Indiana Ave., to create an endowment, which will be worth around $7Themillion.goal is to be sustainable. Stricklen wants the building to be booked with events and programs, both local and national.

Stricklen is a PR person by trade; her previous job was as chief communications and engagement officer for Indianapolis Public Schools. She also worked at Indiana Black Expo under the Rev. Charles Williams and has been a longtime volunteer for the United Negro College Fund and a consultant for the Urban League. She thinks the four-story Walker building has been underutilized, but that appears to be changing. The fourthfloor ballroom, which holds up to about 450, has been the site for the Indiana Pacers’ Pacemates to rehearse (final tryouts were held in the theater), corporate luncheons, andIndianamore.

JANET ALLEN’S TIME with the Indiana Repertory Theatre predates almost every major downtown building, the arrival of the Colts to Indianapolis, and the opening of the longest-running show in Broadway history, ThePhantom of the Opera In fact, Phantom, which opened in 1988, will have to run at least five more years to eclipse Allen’s record for longevity.Inselecting the plays for her final season as artistic director—and the IRT’s 50th season overall—Allen says she was thinking about attendance, inclusivity, and opportunity. The season opener, Sense and Sensibility, and closer, Clue, were chosen for their mass appeal. They’re “COVID-related choices that invite people back to the theater in large numbers,” she says. TheChinese Lady and Flyin’ West are part of IRT’s INclusion Series: Celebrating Diverse Storytelling, while Oedipus, an easily understandable adaptation of the classic Greek play, and Shakespeare’s Will, a solo show about the Bard’s wife, Allen calls “pet projects of mine.” A Christmas Carol, of course, is a Central Indiana holiday favorite. She’s bringing back some of her favorite actors, directors, and designers, too. Priscilla Lindsay, who was most recently chair of the theater and drama department at the University of Michigan, will star in Sense and Sensibility, and David Alan Anderson, now part of the Shaw Festival in Canada, will return to play Oedipus.COVID hit the IRT hard. In 2020–21, a nine-play season with 60 actors was cut to a six-play, 17-actor sea-son. The next season, IRT presented six plays with 33 actors total. This year will feature seven shows and 46 actors.

“The Legacy Center should have more footprint in the community, and people should know what it stands for,” she says. “My goal is in five years that we will have a true footprint as a strong nonprofit, just in time for our 100th anniversary. “We are here for the community,” she says. “We’ve been 100 percent Blackowned through thick and thin for 95 years. This is the only fully Black-owned block that’s left from our heyday, and we embrace that. We definitely want to make history. Be patient with us, but support us.”

She’s proud, too, that the IRT has become a place where employees at the manager levels can own a home and be part of a community instead of being starving artists.

“It was decimating, and continues to be for our field,” Allen says. “People have lost the habit of yearning to do live interaction unless it’s an outdoor concert.” The virus also added the costs and challenges of keeping performers safe. IRT filmed almost every production the last two years and released them on Broadway on Demand, another expense. And while some theatergoers appreciated the safety protocols, namely masks and proof of vaccination, plenty objected. (Those measures are not currently in place for the 2022–23 season.) Attendance is about 60 percent of what it was pre-pandemic. Allen says her legacy will be helping to create a theater where artists from all over the country want to work. “It is viewed as a humane workplace and as a nurturing workplace. We spend a lot of time talking not only about the quality of the work we make, but the conditions under which we make it.”

“It matters to me more than anything that this theater is here in 50 years and serving a very broad community,” she says. After she takes her final bow, Allen plans to have a more relaxed schedule. She has a year-old grandchild in China whom she’s never met in person, and she wants to see friends who are scattered across the country.

When Allen started with the IRT, which moved from the Athenaeum to the Indiana Theatre in 1980, the company had some tough times making payroll. She leaves it with a $24 million endowment, the result of two successful capital campaigns.

We hope that these one-act plays might be given life on larger stages. We want this to be a springboard for Black playwrights, performers, and technicians. There will be opportunities for people to direct for the ﬁrst time, to be lighting and sound technicians, to do makeup and costumes, to work in promotions and marketing. It’s an expansive opportunity to gain expertise and branch out.

The executive producer of OnyxFest (p. 22), Indy’s first theatrical showcase dedicated to presenting works by local Black playwrights, is excited to see how this year’s expanded version will offer more vital opportunities for artists of color to hone their craft.

We see Black theater in Indianapolis growing. I don’t think I would have dropped out if Chelsea Cutler didn’t ask me to go on tour with her. Having one of your favorite artists ask you to open for them on tour is a dream come true. I knew that would open the doors I needed for the next tour, gathering more fans, and leading to a headline tour. It was a now-or-never thing.

My music is about things I’m actually going through. I keep running into the same loop of feeling really good and then feeling really lost and sad and depressed out here in L.A., so when I’m at those low points, writing songs about what I’m going through helps me. When I can write a good song, it pulls me out of that rut.

AND IT WILL MARK THE ISO’S GAINBRIDGE FIELDHOUSE DEBUT. “It’s become a beautiful concert venue,” Johnson says. “The capabilities of the venue are extraordinary. The sound is wonderful there.” BUT IT’S NOT THE ISO’S FIRST GO-ROUND WITH A MAJOR NAME. The group played with Luciano Pavarotti at Market Square Arena back in 1986.

IT’S THE FIRST TIME BOCELLI WILL HAVE PERFORMED IN INDIANA. “His production company knew the orchestra by reputation,” Johnson says. “Certainly he performs with top orchestras around the world. They were looking at Indianapolis and realized that he’s never played in this market.”

THE SHOW WAS SEVERAL YEARS IN THE MAKING. Bringing Bocelli to Indy actually started with Pacers Sports & Entertainment’s booking director, who mentioned the possibility to ISO CEO James Johnson. The initial plan called for a concert in 2020 before, well, you know. Talks started again a year or so ago.

Shortly after graduating from Columbus North High School, Sprouse moved to New York City, where he befriended and eventually collaborated with Keith Haring. Haring became known for subway graffiti art, and that inﬂuence can be seen in some of Sprouse’s work. In Indy, wander Fountain Square and Broad Ripple to see graffiti in the form of murals.

We’re putting music videos and visuals to every song. I’m [also] excited about the level of collaboration that is happening. The Harrison Center has been on the ground building these relationships, day to day, week to week. We’re on a journey together.

WHAT WILL DEEP CURRENTS ENTAIL? I’m building on the work that I’ve been doing with the Harrison Center, which is hearing stories and writing music inspired by those narratives. We’re focusing on three historically Black neighborhoods and highlighting five facets of life and culture— some examples might be fashion, food, or fitness. There is primary and secondary research, like reading the history of the neighborhoods, but also talking to longtime residents who can speak to how things have shifted and how that relates to the broader conversation around gentrification.

VISITORS TO THE KURT VONNEGUT MUSEUM & LIBRARY shouldn’t be alarmed if they hear a cello during Banned Books Week. Or an accordion. Or a bass guitar. That’s just the Bushwick Book Club—Susan Hwang, the group’s founder and artistic director, along with songwriters and musicians Charlie Nieland, spiritchild, Patricia Santos, and Nan Turner—tinkering with their instruments as they work through songs based on Vonnegut works for their weeklong residency. In its fi rst session, Bushwick Book Club invited songwriters to dream up ditt ies based on Breakfast of Champions, and it grew to other books from there. One of the most challenging books I had to write a song for was Keith Richards's autobiography, ''Life.'' He's so lovable. I wanted to write something good be cause I really liked the book, but it made it really hard to write anything.

My personal favorite Vonnegut book is I think it has to be ''Breakfast of Champions'' because it was the first one I had ever read, and I read it for BBC. I had always heard of Vonnegut but never read any.

The ﬁrst thing I do in the songwriting process is read the book. I underline anything that strikes me phrases, particular scenes, dialogue, something I react to. Later, I go back and type out those pieces I underlined, and that helps me revisit the book. And then you feel your way to a song from there.
