fter your gown is cleaned and stored away, your guests head back home, and you pop those thankyou notes in the mail, your wedding photos remain as some of the longest-lasting memories of the day. You want images that make you proud, that transport you right back to that special time surrounded by your family and 24 INDIANA BRIDE | WINTER 2014
friends. Local photographers share how to make the most of your investment.
1. CHOOSE SOMEONE YOU LIKE. Obvious, sure. But as Keri Malinowski, owner of KLM Photography, points out, your photographer will be spending the entire day with you, your friends, and your family. You want to hire someone
with whose personality you click. “If possible, I always suggest an inperson meeting or, at the very least, an online meeting via Skype or FaceTime,” Malinowski says. Kristin Hornberger, owner of Kristin Hornberger Photography, says it’s important to meet with whomever will actually be handling the camera at your wedding— not just a salesperson or the studio owner.

You only get one chance at wedding photos. Here’s how to come away with shots you love.

“Not only should you like their images and style, you should like them,” Hornberger says.
2. KEEP THE VENUE IN MIND. As you and your groom visit potential ceremony and reception sites, take photos, walk around as much as you can, and scope out possible picture-taking locations inside and outside of the venue, suggests Derek Van Barham, wedding coordinator with George Street Photo and Video.
3. PICK DETAILS THAT TRULY MATTER TO YOU. Mason jars may be all the rage, but are they relevant to you? Meaningful particulars like color, flowers, favors, and centerpieces can make your photos that much better. “Don’t just do what is traditional and what others may be doing,” Hornberger says. “You’ll see lots of photos and items along the way that you like. Incorporate those that stand out and represent you two.”
4. CONSIDER A DRY RUN. Unsure if you want an engagement session? If you think you might be nervous on the big day, Van Barham says that engagement photos can help you become more comfortable in front of the lens. And, Malinowski says, a session can benefit everyone involved. Your photographer sees how you and your groom interact, and the couple can gain confidence in their photographer, as well as an understanding of how he or she works.
5. THINK ABOUT BREAKING TRADITION. Not all couples opt for “first look” photos. But they can be a convenient and less-stressful option for getting all formal shots out of the way before the ceremony starts, Malinowski says. Plus, you won’t have to worry about where your guests might go between the ceremony and reception. Envision your groom’s reaction when he sees you for the first time. Capturing that may prove to be priceless. WINTER 2014 | INDIANA BRIDE 25

Twists on Tying the Knot

very wedding is unique, but the unforgettable ones are those where the bride and groom put their own stamp on the ceremony and festivities. Here are some unique twists that impressed even industry pros.
ENGAGING ENTERTAINMENT Meaghan Shanahan, catering sales manager for the Omni Severin Hotel, re26 INDIANA BRIDE | WINTER 2014
calls a wedding where the bride had a theatrical background and she and the groom possessed exuberant personalities. “There was all sorts of love in the room,” Shanahan says. During the ceremony, one of their friends sang “All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles and asked their 150 guests to sing the chorus. “You could hear it outside the ceremony room,” Shanahan says. “It was fun and totally different. They were a unique couple and that fit them very well.”
Another memorable wedding featured a bride and groom from Egypt. After the formal wedding, the couple had a belly dancer kick off the party. “The guests didn’t expect that,” Shanahan says. “It was so nice to see a touch of their culture.”
IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS One couple created a dramatic backdrop for their ceremony on the

patio of The Crane Bay. The groom had designers at the metal-fabrication company where he worked build a structure from which were hung 16-foot-tall blackand-red fabric panels. The bride and her mother sewed the pieces and also made ornate centerpieces for the tables, incorporating the backdrop colors and LED accent lighting. “They could afford whatever they wanted, but chose to do most of it on their own to get exactly the look and feel they had envisioned,” says T.K. Nelson, general manager of The Crane Bay. The couple’s Harley-Davidson was used as a prop for guest photos, and after dinner, the patio was converted into a cigar bar to accommodate the groom’s fondness for good cigars. Even when favorite things are seemingly contradictory, they can meld together nicely with a little preparation. Barbie Gurwitz, owner of Signature Events by Barbie, recalls such a wedding. The bride, who held a Ph.D. in Asian studies, was a fan of Downton Abbey and wore a traditional white Victorian-inspired gown, while her bridesmaids were dressed in blue-
and-gold saris made in Pakistan. “The decor was Downton Abbey meets Asia, and it worked beautifully,” Gurwitz says. Gina Glass, sales and marketing manager for A Classic Party Rental, recalls a July reception at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. The bride handpainted 450 champagne glasses with glitter paint for a guest takeaway and made whimsical swizzle sticks (pink for the ladies, gold for the guys) for his-and-hers specialty cocktails. As a second favor, the couple offered guests a choice of their favorite treats. Hers were heart-shaped cookies made from her grandmother’s recipe; his were iced strawberry ring doughnuts from The Donut Shop. “The details made this event stand out,” Glass says. “Everything was embellished, and every detail was considered throughout the whole event.”
INCLUDING PETS AND HONEYMOON GUESTS Gurwitz wasn’t surprised when one couple wanted their two favorite dogs,
Diesel and Drake, in attendance on their special day. The bride was a dog trainer, after all. Dressed in purple tuxedo shirts, black vests, and plaid ties, the two “perfectly trained” bulldogs strutted their stuff for guests at the Artsgarden. Some couples value alone time during their honeymoon, but for others, that time is even more meaningful when family and friends join them. Vicki Small, senior travel consultant with Noblesville AAA Hoosier Motor Club, reserved nine cruise cabins for a wedding party this past August. The couple and participating family members and friends stayed in a hotel in Miami before boarding the cruise ship to Key West, where the wedding was held. There, they were joined by other friends who gathered in Key West just for the wedding. Once the couple had said their “I dos,” it was back to the ship to continue to Cozumel, Mexico. “When people do something like this, they just tell friends and family to ‘come join us on a cruise,’” Small says. “They participate in the wedding and then have a cocktail party on board the ship for family and friends.”

To Eat and To Drink From tried-and-true to out-of-the-ordinary, catering options can appeal to more than just your palate
O
nce, a sit-down dinner or a buffet featuring roast beef or beef tenderloin and an ornately decorated tiered cake was the gold standard for wedding fare. And though that’s certainly still an option, new trends have emerged in the field of wedding catering. There’s plenty available to please you and your guests, whether you choose an of-the-moment food or a comforting classic. “The requests we receive are staying traditional,” says Andrea Melani, general 28 INDIANA BRIDE | WINTER 2014
manager of Bravo Italian Kitchen at Willow Lake. Bravo typically hosts rehearsal dinners or small wedding receptions. Pasta Bravo (the restaurant’s signature dish), chicken marsala, spaghetti and meatballs, and lasagna work well in a buffet. For wedding receptions, many brides are opting for interactive food stations that provide guests with “create-your-own” options, such as those for mini tacos or hummus, with several kinds of chips to accompany the creamy dip. “They get guests moving and min-
gling,” says Amanda Wood, wedding sales manager for Jonathan Byrd’s Catering.
THE HUGE APPEAL OF SMALLER DISHES Multiple food areas pair nicely with the trend toward small plates and miniature servings. “Comfort food is still very big,” says Vince Early, director of sales for Thomas Caterers of Distinction. “Now it’s all about how to spin it to make it cool and give it a ‘wow’ factor.”
S P E C I A L A D V E R T I S I N G S U P P L E M E N T T O I N D I A N A P O L I S M O N T H LY
For late-night snacks, a fast-growing option, Early likes to serve miniature pizzas with cheeseburger toppings. Sliders, as well as Thomas’s baked “windowpane” chips made from encasing an herb in very thin slices of potato, are also popular.
FARM FRESH Another emerging trend is the preference for locally sourced, fresh food, especially for summer weddings. Jacquie Bols, owner of Jacquie’s Gourmet Catering, says brides often ask if she uses food sourced from area farms. Locally raised chicken and her Provencal braised-beef short ribs are her most-requested dishes. Outdoor weddings and barns continue to be popular choices. “Brides are going more for this natural, rustic theme, and that includes the food as well,” Bols says. So does the trend toward serving craft beers and cocktails, one of the biggest changes Bols has seen in recent years.
SWEET TREATS Even wedding cakes are undergoing a transformation. “Cakes are very classic and simplistic with a few key details versus all-over details,” Wood says, adding that buttercream frosting is making a comeback. It’s also not unusual to have three cakes for a greater variety and more creative displays, such as those that incorporate unique linens, cake stands, or family photos, she says. Sweets are a natural fit for miniatures. “Petite desserts are a huge trend in the restaurant industry,” Melani says. Bravo features five miniature offerings, while Thomas Caterers offers a “pie flight,” serving four flavors of the popular dessert on a wooden paddle. For late-night snacks, Wood likes a mix of sweet and salty, such as pretzels or popcorn displayed in paper cones in the wedding colors, along with a cookie bar. When it comes to drinks, Early says cocktails featuring fresh herbs are perfect for summer, while hot drinks and creambased sips complement the cooler months. But no matter the time of year, bubbly is ever in season. “Prosecco aperitifs always work well as a toast,” Melani says.

mid all the other details of planning a wedding lies the job of choosing songs to play during your reception. And with countless artists and songs at your disposal, it’s no small task. You could probably use some help narrowing down the selections, so who better to lend advice than those who craft wedding playlists for a living? Local DJs offer a few suggestions, along with their reasoning as to why the songs made the list. If you’re looking for… A MEMORABLE TUNE THAT INTRODUCES YOU AS HUSBAND AND WIFE
“Say Hey (I Love You)” by Michael Franti & Spearhead—the beat and vocals on this song are just fun “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” by Natalie Cole—such a great message “I Gotta Feeling” by The Black Eyed Peas—lyrics, lyrics, lyrics; “tonight’s gonna be a good night” says it all “Applause” by Lady Gaga—this would get everyone fired up for the rest of the evening “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis—great song; allows the DJ 20-some seconds to tee up the introduction before the lyrics start —James Gucinski, owner of Lakeside Entertainment

AN UNEXPECTED BUT STILL LOVELY FIRST-DANCE SONG
“She Thinks She Needs Me” by Andy Griggs—it’s a reversal—the girl thinks the guy is really strong and superheroesque, but he’s admitting he gets his strength from her “Angel Eyes” by The Jeff Healey Band—talks about a guy wondering how he got so lucky to have his woman in his life, and I think a lot of guys can relate to that “All My Life” by K-Ci & JoJo—a little more on the hip-hop side of things “Life’s a Happy Song” from The Muppets soundtrack—very different but with a great message “Angel” by Aerosmith—because who doesn’t like a good love ballad? —Jamie Wainio, general manager of Midwest Sound
