CONGRATULATIONS! You said yes to tying the knot, but it turns out the months of planning leading up to that day are full of big decisions and difficult choices. And chances are you’ve never had to hire an event caterer, find a photographer, or choose the right venue for a big shindig. Luckily, the pros have been working on weddings for a long time, and they’ve got some advice to share.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU with Amy von Eiff, Owner of A Cut Above Catering 12955 Old Meridian St., Ste. 104, Carmel, 317-575-9514, acutabovecatering.com

THINKSTOCK.COM

HOW CAN THE HAPPY COUPLE CREATE A MENU THAT REFLECTS THEIR PERSONALITIES AND BACKGROUNDS?

To add a dash of personality to the meal, von Eiff likes to personalize a menu with family favorites and dishes that reflect the culture or history of the couple. For instance, she catered a wedding where the bride and groom had Hungarian and African heritages. The menu featured a Hungarian goulash and an African stew. She used spices from the family stash to make the stew authentic. “People are foodies now,” von Eiff says. “They don’t want the typical catering food any more. They want something unique.” AUGUST 2017 | INDIANA BRIDE

WHAT’S FOR DESSERT?

Cupcakes enjoyed a good run, and now von Eiff sets up doughnut displays. Oftentimes the couple will order a small cake for the cutting ceremony and complement it with mini desserts like little pies, cookies, or Italian sodas.

WHAT MISTAKES DO COUPLES MAKE WHEN PLANNING THEIR MENU?

Online ideas are great, von Eiff says, but keep in mind that many of those ideas have a price tag. The rustic setting looks great in pictures, but you’ll need a caterer who can bring the kitchen with them if there are no cooking facilities on site.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES?

Arrange a walk through where all of the vendors are present—event coordinator, DJ, caterer, and photographer. “You want your vendors to all communicate with each other,” she says.

SAY CHEESE

with Jennifer Clark, Owner of Jen Clark Photography 787 Stockbridge Dr., Westfield, 317-502-1160, jenclark.photography

WHY SHOULD A COUPLE USE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER AT THEIR WEDDING?

Experience counts, especially when it comes to pictures you expect to last a lifetime, Clark says. She has backups—backup equipment and a backup photographer—if something goes wrong.

WHAT ARE SOME RED FLAGS THAT COUPLES SHOULD WATCH FOR WHEN INTERVIEWING A PHOTOGRAPHER?

Look at the photographer’s portfolio, Clark says. If the pictures look funny, they may 20

have been edited to correct issues with lighting or other factors. “If the photos don’t look correct, it’s probably a lack of experience and knowledge,” Clark says. Also make sure the photographer’s personality is a match, Clark says. Couples want a photographer who keeps the wedding party and guests comfortable, ensuring that pictures capture the emotions of the day.

WHAT ARE POPULAR POSES FOR WEDDING DAY PHOTOS?

Today’s couples are eschewing lineup photos and instead opting for less formal shots. They prefer pictures of the wedding party interacting or the family members embracing after the ceremony, Clark says. Still, she recommends at least some traditional poses, if only to keep mama happy. “Mothers want that, and you can’t completely go around mothers,” she says.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE WEDDING VENUE, WHERE CAN A COUPLE SAVE MONEY AND WHAT SHOULD NEVER BE COMPROMISED?

Event Specialist Maddie LaDow suggests scheduling a wedding on a Friday or Sunday for substantial savings. But don’t skimp on food. “Your guests have made the time to spend with you, and that is a great way to let them know you appreciate them,” LaDow says.

WHAT NEWER TRENDS ARE SEEN AT TODAY’S WEDDINGS?

Event Specialist Casey Lazzara cites late night food stations, cigar and bourbon bars, and personalized Snapchat filters as the new kids on the wedding block. Why not personalize those smart phone features? AUGUST 2017 | INDIANA BRIDE

DOES CAPACITY MATTER? WHEN DO THINGS BECOME TOO CROWDED IN A BANQUET HALL?

Trust the wedding planner or event coordinator, Lazzara says. They’ve seen the different arrangements and can tell you what works and what doesn’t.

BESIDES PLAYING MUSIC, WHAT WILL A GOOD DJ BRING TO AN EVENT?

A good DJ chooses music to keep guests involved and engaged, Smith says. The DJ keeps the reception moving smoothly from one event to the next.

CAN THE COUPLE MAKE THEIR OWN PLAYLISTS?

Smith customizes his approach to fit personal preferences. Some couples may choose special spotlight dance songs but don’t have a strong opinion on other music. Some provide a list of every song and the specific order. That’s fine, too, Smith says. “We do it this way because, well, it’s their event,” he says.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO FIND A GOOD DJ?

Finding a good DJ means finding someone couples feel comfortable with and who fits within their budget. Talk and communicate with the DJ, Smith says. Make sure they know what you want and can provide it.

DO YOU LIKE WORKING WEDDINGS?

“I love working weddings,” Smith says. “The payoff comes at the end of the night, when you can see the joy on the couple’s faces and you hear people telling them how much fun they had at their reception.” 22
