FINDING THE RIGHT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

for your high school student is no easy task. Parents seek schools that offer not only a challenging curriculum, plenty of AP and dual-credit courses, and high graduationand college acceptance–rates, but they also look for a diverse student body, innovative learning opportunities, and a low studentto-teacher ratio. Luckily, central Indiana has no shortage of high school formats for families to consider. Whether a family is looking for public and private options, religious and secular options, a virtual classroom, or a brick-and-mortar institution, there is something for everyone, depending on how they define success.

REACH FOR THE STARS| Tyler Mayer, vice president of institutional advancement at Bishop Chatard High School, says some parents equate a successful school with the number of foreign languages they offer, advanced math programs they have, or whether they use the latest and greatest technological advancements in the classroom, but this is a mistake. He says successful schools are those that encourage students to be all that they can be. “Environment is everything,” he says. “When a student is comfortable in his or her environment, they will develop better relationships with their teachers and coaches, become comfortable with their strengths and weaknesses, and learn how to accomplish their academic goals.” He says parents should look for a school that reflects their own values, offer the programs and extracurricular activities that interest their students, and are committed to helping their child reach their maximum potential. “At Bishop Chatard, we foster an environment that allows our students to use their gifts and talents for academic excellence as well as the greater good,” he says. “We believe we have a responsibility to educate the whole student: body, mind, and spirit.”

WHAT’S YOUR STYLE?| Because every child learns differently, it is important for parents to find a format that is best suited to their student’s learning style. Online academies are a great op-

portunity for all types of students with a diverse range of backgrounds including: high achievers, struggling learners, special needs students, or those just looking for a different approach. Elizabeth Sliger, head of school at Indiana Digital Learning School, says online options offer an innovative use of technology, an engaging curriculum, state-certified teachers, and a personalized approach designed to meet different learning styles. “Our schools provide daily support to students and a variety of wrap-around services for families,” she says. “The key is that each school helps students become independent, self-motivated learners by giving them a strong foundation and opportunities to

of education, feel the school is geographically inconvenient, or are worried their student won’t fit into a particular institution. Whatever the reason, experts say it is important for families to visit a wide variety of institutions in order to find the place where their student can grow and thrive. According to Duane Emery, vice president for enrollment management at Cathedral High School, unless families take the time to participate in shadow sessions or preview days, they may not find out what makes a school unique in terms of student-to-teacher ratio, discover financial aid opportunities that may be available to a student, or find out how the school is able to meet a variety of needs. “Families emphasize distance too much.

explore interests and reach their academic potential.” While some parents shy away from online programs because they fear there is little opportunity for socialization, Rachel Goodwin, interim head of school for Insight School of Indiana, says that is an outdated misconception. “Our students participate in a range of extracurricular activities both online and in-person, including clubs, field trips, celebrations, and social gatherings,” she says.

GO BELOW THE SURFACE| Sometimes parents cross a school off their list of prospects without paying a visit or signing their student up for a shadow experience. They may be concerned about the cost

Cathedral is committed to geographic diversity, and to that effect, we offer a robust transportation system that brings students to and from school daily from all around the greater Indianapolis area,” he says. “Combine the transportation system with carpools and the fact that our campus—including the Student Life Center Commons and media center—is open from 7 a.m.–7 p.m., parents will find that distance is not nearly the obstacle originally imagined.” With a wide range of secondary schools offering a number of academic and athletic programs, clubs, and activities, parents should have no trouble finding a high school that will challenge their child and inspire the individual to reach his or her career and life goals. “Our goal is to help our students become the best version of themselves,” he says. STUDENTS AND FAMILIES MAY THINK CHOOSING

between a public and private college comes down to two factors: school size and cost, perhaps with a few statistics and rankings thrown in. While these are both important to consider, there’s much more to the equation—and a student’s chances of success.

THE BIG (OR SMALL)| DIFFERENCE|

Public universities are big enough to offer a wide variety of academic programs and learning options. They are geared toward benefiting the citizens of the state that supports them. Ball State University in Muncie

124

IM | FEBRUARY 2018

began more than a century ago as a teachers college and now offers about 190 majors, more than 130 undergraduate minors, and more than 140 graduate programs. This fall, the university welcomed a record 22,513 students, about 17,000 of them on campus. “Yet we are small enough to ensure the friendliness, personal attention and access that are the hallmarks of our university,” said Kay Bales, vice president for student affairs and enrollment services and dean of students. The average class size is 30 students. About 90 percent of Ball State’s classes are taught by faculty (and not graduate assistants, as is the case at other large public universities). Decades after graduation, alumni remember the

mentoring they received, she said. At a large university, there is room to find and form smaller communities such as Ball State’s living and learning environments. “Students with similar majors and interests live in the same residential building with amenities designed to take learning beyond the classroom,” Bales said. Steve Mortland is vice president for enrollment management and marketing at Taylor University, a much smaller Christian liberal arts school in Upland, 70 miles north of Indianapolis. Of its 1,892 undergraduates, about 40 percent are from Indiana. Mortland said while public universities have worked hard to decrease class size and

increase opportunities for building smaller communities, they still tend to operate on large-scale efficiencies, while most private colleges and universities are committed to smaller class sizes. Fifty-eight percent of Taylor’s classes have fewer than 20 students; 37 percent have 20 to 49 students.

COUNTING THE TRUE COST| Full-time tuition, fees, and room and board during the 2017–18 academic year are about $42,000 at Taylor and about $19,000 for an Indiana resident at Ball State. However, those numbers are only the beginning figures in a highly individualized equation. Whether attending a public or private institution, few students pay the full sticker price of a college, Taylor University’s Mortland said. Families should look first for schools that will provide students with the best 40-year (not just four-year) impact, then go through the financial aid process to determine what resources, such as loans, grants, and work-study, will make the education attainable.

At Ball State, four of every five students receive some combination of merit-based and need-based financial aid, according to the university. Mortland also said it’s important to look at how effectively schools help students complete their degrees in four years. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, 32.6 percent of students at public Indiana fouryear institutions complete their degrees in four years, while 57.5 percent of students at Indiana’s private colleges and universities do so. After all, an additional year of school is an additional year of tuition, room, and board.

MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED| Whether a student succeeds at a public university or small private college depends largely on the reasons for the student’s choice and level of engagement in his or her own learning. Ball State’s faculty and staff treat students as partners from day one, Bales said, empowering and encouraging them to take

their learning and creative risks beyond the labs and classrooms. Students are given freedom and flexibility and are expected to be engaged and persistent learners, she said. Those undecided about a field of study need not worry, she said. “We are committed to helping students find the right path and have several initiatives to accomplish that goal— and get it done within four years.” Students who succeed at Taylor do so because they have a desire to engage in all aspects of the university community, Mortland said. Students who are looking to “consume” an education, for the university to serve them a degree and experience, will be less successful, he said. Statistics and rankings about graduation rates, retention rates, and more should inform, not justify, college decisions, Mortland said. “For example, in the U.S. News and World Report ranking, there is some really helpful information on the academic quality of students and strength of faculty,” he said. “Reading and understanding these data points can often be more helpful than the simple number ranking.”
