are up, and your kids are trying to narrow down their costume choices. But that also means the holidays are right around the corner. Our shopping queues seem to grow a little longer every year and, as you know, finding something truly unique can be an epic-level challenge. Thankfully, the local retail selection in the Circle City is anything but ordinary. Indianapolis is home to a coterie of eclectic and one-of-a-kind options to find the perfect gifts for all your friends and family members, ages 1 to 91. Whether you’re buying for a gourmand or a gardener, a fashionista or an art aficionado, these six spots contain a plethora of goods to please even the persnickety.

Pick up MH Leathergoods purses in a range of styles and prices. These luxuriant bags are handmade by fourthgeneration leather crafters who escaped the oppressive regime in Damascus, Syria, and relocated to Indianapolis. If original artwork is what you seek instead, take home the Birds & Rocket screenprint by The Bungaloo or Jillian Nickell’s illustrated poster featuring vintage cameras. DON’T MISS!

Your eyes will be immediately drawn to the Indianacentric collection at the front of both the Mass Ave and Carmel locations. These stores are dedicated to celebrating the “Crossroads of America.” “We’re not afraid to have a voice in the community,” says social media manager Shea Rodriguez. “We want you to come in and escape.” The walls are adorned with recipe books, kitchenwares, games, and magnets promoting anything from Tom Petty lyrics about our fair state to current events and social issues to Netflix series Stranger Things. Don’t forget about Silver in the City’s stunning array of unique sterling-silver and copper jewelry. Rodriguez says the Hawkhouse brand ($40–$80), based out of Martha’s Vineyard, is very popular with customers. This delicate, eco-friendly line is brought to life through a process called electroforming, in which a conductive bezel is hand-painted onto each stone to produce copper while submerged in an electrochemical solution.

INDIANA ARTISAN OFFERS the best of the best in Indianamade goods. Interim director Rosalyn Demaree describes the store’s niche as “exceptional art, food, and beverages made right here.” She says each artist must submit their wares to a jury from around the state in order to be selected as an approved vendor. The space has an old-world vibe, akin to leaving downtown Carmel and stepping into a small gallery in Europe. Demaree proudly points out a wood table made by local artist Peter Falk ($5,600). This one-of-a-kind piece was carved from a fallen oak tree near 71st Street and Allisonville Road. Numerous paintings contribute to the gallery feel in the store, including Grandma’s Garden, a gold-leaf and oil painting by Nashville-based artist Patricia Rhoden ($1,250).

AT THE EDGE OF MERIDIAN-KESSLER sits a charming shopping strip that includes Be The Boutique. The name “BE” stands for Barbie and Evan Turner, the mother-anddaughter team behind the shop’s inception. “Even before I opened the store, there wasn’t much eclectic out there,” Barbie says. “I never wanted it to look like a big-box retail store.” The logo and interior lean decidedly girly, but the business carries gift items for both women and men. Notecards and tumblers from iconic designer Kate Spade ($20–$21) adorn one shelf. More masculine products—including the Gentlemen’s All-Purpose Hardware Tool ($48)—fill another. A family of woodworking craftsmen, the Stinson brothers and their father source a variety of hardwoods to create home accents, cutting boards, and oak tumblers.
