CheckING one off the bucket list As you get a bit older, bucket lists seem to take on a bit more urgency. Some items may be unrealistic dreams unless you win the lottery, but others just require the right timing and perhaps a little investigation. So it was with our trip to the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, Md., just as spring gave way to summer on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. I’d attended events there, but we’d never stayed at

the luxurious property on the Miles River. More formally known as the Inn at Perry Cabin by Belmond (formerly Orient Express), the property has a long history in the area. The original manor house was built in 1815 by Samuel Hambleton, who had served as aide-de-camp to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. He designed the north wing of the manor house to resemble Perry’s cabin on his flagship Niagara. Since that time, the estate has been a plantation, equestrian center, country inn, and a luxury hotel. Just outside the town of St. Michaels and around the point from the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, the inn offers a beautiful riverfront location, broad lawns with Adirondack chairs and swings for lazy river-watching, fire pits for evening snuggling, beautiful gardens, the Linden Spa, and a pool and poolside bar. The restaurant offers great water views and the main bar is cozy, with wonderful bartenders and a great food menu as well. Boaters can dock at the inn at no charge if they are overnight guests or are dining. The inn’s guest services staff can arrange boat trips on a variety of craft for guests. Pets are welcome in first-floor rooms on the property. We enjoyed afternoon tea in the dining room with traditional savory and sweet treats and mornings relaxing on the porch outside our room. Insider tip: We accepted a bartender’s recommendation for a seasonal blueberry lemonade that became an instant favorite. There is a list of daily activities ranging from paddleboard lessons to discussions to a mixology class. We joined three other couples for the mixology offering and brought home recipes and tips, as well as memories from a fun experience. The inn offers a number of special packages, including a “Skip the Bridge” offer that lets you leave your car in Edgewater, Md., on Friday and travel to the inn aboard a beautiful 55-foot Hinckley yacht, enjoy champagne on board with VIP check-in for a two-night stay, and return on Sunday. The package is good weekends through Oct. 29. Look at the inn’s website for specials that may surprise you. (belmond.com/innatperrycabin)
The biggest attraction is the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, where you can explore the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, learn about the bay’s shift from primarily a place of work to a major recreation site, and delve into the history of the Chesapeake Bay with plenty of exhibits. The exhibition of 80 of Robert de Gast’s black and white photographs of bay life is a reminder of how special the estuary is to so many people. There’s a working boatyard to visit, as well. The museum’s Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival brings hundreds of skiffs, kayaks, and canoes to race along the waterfront. The annual OysterFest is Oct. 28, with live music, plenty of oysters, retriever demonstrations, and lots of other activities. (cbmm.org) There are plenty of restaurants along the harbor and scattered through town, many with outdoor seating, and shops of all kinds to explore. And, clustered near the entrance to town in the Old Mill District are the St. Michaels Winery, Eastern Shore Brewing, and Lyon Distilling. St. Michaels Winery opens daily at 11:00am and offers tastings for $1 per wine sampled. Eastern Shore Brewing opens for tastings daily at noon. The distillery, which produces rum and whiskey, also opens daily at noon. It’s a relaxing, fun way to check one off the bucket list!

The porch is calling me
It was an impromptu vacation. We had time off slated, but our original plans fell through and we decided on an old favorite, a New England getaway where we could escape the heat of the Baltimore summer. My sister lives in Boston and also has a cottage on a lake in Maine, while cousins Tony and June live in Vermont. We envisioned a great American road trip, seeing some great sights, and spending some time with family at a beautiful time of year in that region. On our first day in Boston, my sister was apologetic about the “heat.” Well, compared to 98 degrees with 98 percent humidity at home, Boston’s 85 degrees felt like weather I’d comfortably cut the lawn in. But, they aren’t used to those temperatures, and in Boston’s northern suburbs, even homes valued in the half a million to a million dollar range don’t have air conditioning because it simply is hardly ever necessary. No big deal for us Southerners. We spent some time sitting on Adirondack chairs overlooking the

scenery, chatting over lemonade. The house was warmer than the outdoors, so we sat on the porch, having fun talking and carrying on. It struck me that porches seem to be a must for so many people and the attraction of a large porch is unmistakable. But where I live, it seems like nobody ever uses them. Nostalgically, I reminisce of days gone by, everyone on their porches escaping the heat, pleasantly waving to those walking by, exchanging a few kind words. The scene is a relaxing one that reminds us of why we take vacations. A time to just stop and smell the roses, relax, and get away from the obligations of work and chores. Today, these porches are seldom used. They end up taking a back seat to the television, couch, and climatecontrolled comfort. Or, being at home, the leisure gives way to that chore staring you in the face, begging to be done. Even so, the porch remains high on the “must-have” list for so many home shoppers. Why? Not because of its function (like the master bathroom), but because of what it represents. It represents the chance of relaxation and of a leisurely existence, if even for a brief moment, giving us a break from our hustleand-bustle lives. A vacation also is a way to escape the hustle and bustle. I write this column as I am sitting in my sister’s cottage on the lake, miles from an Internet or cell signal. I’ve got nothing to fix. No emails can be checked. My laptop allows me to write, but that is not so much work as it is a passion for me. And, where better to do this than on a porch overlooking the mirror-glass smooth lake, enjoying the smell of pine forest and the chirps of birds, at a location 500 miles from my chore list? I am relaxed. Mission accomplished.

Fall brings a tale of pandas, apples, and founding fathers With interest in traveling to China at an all-time high and the promise of cooler temperatures in September and October, fall is the perfect time to take that long-awaited trip to the other side of the world. While some first-timers put Beijing and Shanghai high on their list, other travelers head for lesser known parts, such as Chengdu in Sichuan Province or Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province. From Shanghai, our group flew to Chengdu, located on the Tibetan plateau. A city of 12 million residents, Chengdu is the home of the worldrenowned Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, a nonprofit research and breeding facility for pandas and other rare animals. Unfortunately, the newborn panda nursery had closed a few minutes before our arrival, so I recommend you visit early in the day. But, we were able to see several of the adults in their natural habitat. Long known for its Shu embroideries and brocades, Chengdu is more than 2,400 years old and marks the beginning of the Southern Silk Road. Today’s visitors are attracted to its ancient villages and famous Sichuan cuisine. After visiting Chengdu for several days, we flew to Wenzhou via
Shanghai. Located on the East China Sea, Wenzhou has a population of 6.6 million. The city’s rich cultural heritage includes ceramics, silk textile manufacturing, embroidery, and boat construction, and it has long been a popular destination for poets, writers, and other luminaries. We marveled at 5,000 years of Chinese culture at the Wenzhou Museum. We learned about the birth of opera during the Song and Yuan dynasties and posed for pictures in costumes at the Wenzhou Southern Opera Museum. And, at the Wenzhou Arts and Crafts Research Institute, we met artists who practice ancient methods to create fine-line paper engravings, Yueqing boxwood carvings, Ou embroidery, oil clay sculptures, Chinese porcelain, rice sculpture, and other handicrafts, many for sale at reasonable prices. Following the opening exhibit of the Sino-U.S. Travel Photography Exhibit at the Epoch Art Museum, we boarded sightseeing boats for a dazzling nighttime tour of the Nantang area of Wenzhou. We took a short ferry ride across the Ou River to see Jiangxin Islet, also known as the “Island of Poetry,” and traveled by bus to Yandang Mountain, or “Wild Goose Pond

Around the Mid-Atlantic With summer and the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse behind us, it’s time to look toward fall festivals and scenic drives around the MidAtlantic. Celebrate autumn by spending a few days exploring Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Parkway, Shenandoah National Park or Deep Creek Lake, the Appalachian Trail or the Delaware Water Gap, or the Pennsylvania Dutch Country or Gettysburg. Or, take a day trip closer to home and visit places such as the C&O Canal National Historical Park, Rock Creek Park, the U.S. National Arboretum, or Mount Vernon.
The 2017 Shenandoah Valley Apple Harvest Festival is expecting more than 7,500 people the weekend of Sept. 16–17. Held at the Frederick County Fairgrounds in Clear Brook, Va., the festival will celebrate the apple harvest in a variety of ways. Visitors can begin a weekend of apple-frenzy fun by visiting the apple-themed booth in the fairground’s arena. While there, indulge in a free apple and apple cider samples. You’ll also be able to watch apple butter being made the old-fashioned way, and then buy a jar or two (still warm) to take home. And, an apple pie baking contest will crown one winner, while an apple pie eating contest later in the day will crown another. Representatives of the Virginia Old Time Apple Growers Association also will be on hand, displaying 60 varieties of apples. On Sunday, those 21 and older can pay a tast-
ing fee to sample hard ciders and craft beers at the Tap & Cork Tasting. All ages can enjoy a variety of food, including apple dishes, donuts, ice cream, kettle corn, and more. Attendees can shop for crafts made by more than 100 local and regional artists, admire vintage cars in the antique car show, and have fun in the Kids Zone. Familyfriendly entertainment will be performed by The Shockers, Robbie Limon, The Wayfarers, The Judy Chops, Jimmy Lee, and others.

For kids who want to be astronauts — or adults who still dream about it — the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, Va., is the place to explore and stoke their “space fever.” VASC is a museum of a different sort. Serving as the official visitors center for NASA’s Langley Research Center, the birthplace of America’s space program, it offers more than 150 exhibits featuring interactive aviation displays spanning 100 years of flight, more than 30 historic aircraft, a hands-on space exploration gallery, unique space flight artifacts, and an IMAX theater. (casc.org) Even from the outside and a block away, VASC’s arching glass building inspires the imagination. Inside, it is packed to the rafters with biplanes, shark-mouthed jet fighters, actual spacesuits, and space capsules. But, more than just static displays, the center offers a variety of space age experiences. “Be the Astronaut,” one of VASC’s premier exhibit experiences, “...
teaches Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)-based content via a fusion of physical exhibitry and state-of-the-art video game technology.” The exhibit enables developing young astronauts to “try on” an astronaut’s life. Working directly with NASA’s subject matter experts, and focused on freechoice learning, VASC designed the exhibit to offer a different experience each visit. To try the concepts, challenges, and excitement of spaceflight, visitors use touch-screen stations, artifacts, and interactive simulator pods built to look like space capsules. “Virtual content experts” explain how to operate the various vehicles, and simulators give a sense of what it is like to perform many of the feats. “Different people of different ages are able to enjoy the same experience,” said the center’s Danielle Price. continued on page 24

Focus on fall fun in Fauquier County with events and wine There isn’t a grain of desert sand anywhere near Fauquier County, yet its 650 square miles of rolling hills, open space, and main-street communities is an oasis. Located just down the road from Washington, D.C., Fauquier is an escape from city life; a place where sipping wine, Twilight Polo matches, shopping at quaint boutiques, and hiking nature trails are a part of everyday life. A quick glance at a world map reveals that Fauquier sits at the same latitude as California’s Napa Valley and Northern Italy. The ties between the three regions go beyond geography. Fauquier has emerged as one of the nation’s leading wine producers. About 35 years ago, the entire state of Virginia boasted fewer than 10 wineries. Today, Fauquier alone counts 26, making it one of the country’s most concentrated winemaking and wine tourism areas. White wines range from easy-drinking summer chardonnay to complex viognier. Red-wine aficionados can have their pick of deep, earthy cabernet sauvignon and satisfying meritage, among others. Fauquier’s wineries offer much more than acres of beautiful vineyards and award-winning pours. Many of them have tasting rooms that bustle with activity from early spring through late fall. During these times, you’d be hard-pressed to find a
Fauquier winery without some form of weekend entertainment. The county-sponsored Annual Wine Tasting and Competition is held in late winter as a look-ahead to spring and the opening of wine-tasting season.
On Oct. 14, Fauquier shows off a selection of its agricultural jewels with a free, self-guided farm tour that’s open to the public. The one-day event features everything from working farms to wineries and even elegant country estates.
Producing more than grapes
A love of horses
The wine industry’s relatively recent emergence is an extension of Fauquier’s oldest and still largest business: agriculture. Fauquier boasts 230,000 farm acres — a figure that has actually increased in the last decade. The county has family farms that supply everything from beef to soybeans to local stores and national outlets. Many of the farms have on-site retail stores that sell directly to the public, and the county’s half-dozen regular farmers markets provide even more sales outlets. Fauquier’s farming industry also includes a wide variety of experiential adventures. Pickyour-own farms offer apples, lavender, peaches, pumpkins, strawberries, and more — there’s a crop for every season — and corn mazes serve as an annual fall staple. Many farms invite visitors to discover for themselves how they work. Visitors can experience dairy production and enjoy homemade ice cream, pet an alpaca’s soft fleece, and tour an egg-laying operation.
If one avocation competes with farming for Fauquier’s hearts and outdoor-activity passion, it’s horses. Virginia Horse Country has its roots in Fauquier, and to say those roots run deep would be a colossal understatement. The June Upperville Colt and Horse Show, held since 1853, was the country’s first horse show. Warrenton’s Horse Show, held annually since 1899, runs through Sept. 3. The county’s Great Meadow Events Center at The Plains hosts the annual International Gold Cup event each October, and the Virginia Gold Cup each May, and is arguably the nation’s most prestigious steeplechase race. Great Meadow hosts other steeplechase races, as well as polo and show jumping. In recent years, it has expanded its events list to include world-class equestrian competitions, as well as U.S. Equestrian Team Olympic qualifiers. When Great Meadow is idle, it is a public park with 250 acres of trails, ponds, and rolling pastures. continued on page 24

Virginia’s River Realm marks fall with oyster experiences Events and watermen’s tours attract bivalve lovers Down a twisty dirt lane to the waterfront, Urbanna Seafood & Raw Bar is the quintessential “place that only the locals know about.” Owner Rufus Ruark has been in the oyster business for more than 40 years. His dockside restaurant features local, farm-raised oysters. All that he sells and all that he serves is right out of Virginia’s lower Rappahannock River. But, Ruark has a problem. A great blue heron, stilt-legged, looking like a feathered Groucho Marx, has been helping himself to the market’s soft crabs, kept in large, water-filled “slough boxes” out on the pier. Unwilling to shoot the crab thief, Ruark laid down a heavy metal grating to shelter his wares. But, the big bird quickly learned that bouncing up and down on the grating will slide it aside, again exposing the succulent soft crabs. After enjoying one of Ruark’s
soft crab sandwiches for lunch, I completely understand the heron’s persistence. The waters are saltier where the river meets the lower Chesapeake Bay. Maybe that is the reason the oysters and crabs are so tasty. Spanning the river, Middlesex and Lancaster counties — Virginia’s “River Realm” — offer recreation, dining, and lodging experiences that immerse visitors into this tidewater domain. Urbanna is an ideal place to meet the River Realm. Even though it offers the amenities of a larger city, Urbanna has retained a small-town charm. The local grocery, museum, a dozen historic structures, accommodations at The Chesapeake Inn, and quality dining opportunities are all within a short walk. The Urbanna Wine and Oyster Stroll on Oct. 14 is Virginia’s official oyster festival and now in its 60th year. It hosts 75,000 visitors and

Experience a Watermen’s Heritage Tour People have enjoyed the lower Rappahannok’s seafood since the first settlers along its shores. The Virginia Watermen’s Heritage Tours celebrate that tradition, and enable visitors to “... experience the time-honored history and traditions of our working watermen up-close and personal.” The tours, conducted by specially trained watermen, offer a wide range of on-the-water, customizable activities that can include oystering, crabbing, fishing, historical tours, seafood tastings, scenic cruises, or wildlife and bird watching. Captain Gene Edmonds runs his tours from the Tides Inn Marina, in Irvington. His comfortable 26-foot cruiser is an ideal vessel for exploring the creeks, river, and bay beyond. On his tour, Edmonds points out nesting ospreys, pelicans, and other shore birds. Be sure to request a stop at the Rappahannock Oyster
Farm, in Topping, to see the latest technology for “farming” oysters in a “completely contained operation,” raising them from tiny “spat” to marketable size. While at the oyster farm, go next door to Merroir to try a plate of “Angels on Horseback.” These oysters on the half shell are roasted with garlic, butter, herbs, and a thin slice of country ham from Edwards of Smithfield. Merroir’s waterfront location adds creekside ambiance to its fine cuisine.
Lodging options The Tides Inn has been an icon in the River Realm for 70 years, with a reputation for caring for its guests’ comfort. Much of the 106-room lodging faces out onto tidewater, and so many of its activities are wateroriented. Its dining room “... uses as much local ingredients as possible,” said culinary director T.V. Flynn. “We build our menu on what we can get; what is the freshest?”

Bethpage Camp-Resort has upscale amenities and a prime riverfront location. Bryan Byrd’s cuisine is equally fine, if not quite as formal. A couple of grills are set up in a tent at the Dog and Oyster Vineyard in Irvington. However, his oysters are just two hours out of the water, and he roasts them with a pesto or hot sauce, or fries them to make sriracha oyster tacos. As an added delicacy, Byrd makes “sugar toads,” fried blowfish filets to be eaten almost like ice cream bars. The vineyard’s award-winning wines pair with Byrd’s dishes. The vines grow within sight of the water. “The same characteristics that affect the oysters in the water also affect the grapes in the vineyard,” said owner Dudley Patteson. Patteson also owns the Hope and Glory Inn, a unique boutique hotel in Irvington. Along with distinctive hotels, the River Realm is home to Bethpage Camp-Resort, where recreational ve-
hicles rule and “roughing it” means peddling a bicycle to the Ice Creamery instead of driving the golf cart. With room for more than 1,200 camping units, the resort also features rental cabins, a waterpark with multiple slides, a separate beach area, dining options, live music, themed weekends, and a full calendar of scheduled activities. The place is enormous, exciting, and absolutely family-focused. Back at the Urbanna Seafood Market, as I looked outside after finishing that huge soft crab sandwich, I saw the crab-stealing heron. He was looking right back at me, as if to say, “That’s my lunch you just ate!”

OYSTER FESTIVALS AND EVENTS Virginia’s Oyster Country — Lancaster, Middlesex, and Gloucester counties — encompasses the lower portions of the Rappahannock, Piankatank, and York rivers as they empty into the Chesapeake Bay. Along with Virginia’s Northern Neck and Eastern Shore, these regions help make the state the East Coast’s largest producer of wild-caught and farm-raised oysters. Throughout the oyster regions, the autumn means oyster festivals and roasts. From Irvington to Chincoteague, oysters are celebrated and served roasted, stewed, fried, or simply on the half shell. Many festivals also include music, crafts, vendors, and opportunities to learn about oysters and the state’s progressive aquaculture programs.

The accessible outdoors is Wytheville, Va.’s special niche. The town, located at the intersection of I-81 and I-77, snuggles up against massive Sand Mountain. An energetic cyclist can pedal a mountain bike up Broadway and be on the mountain within minutes. Four hiking and biking trails coil through the property, including a 4.5-mile path leading to High Rocks summit’s 180-degree view. Wytheville spreads out below like a model train layout, and neighboring peaks — Big Walker, Iron, Cove, and Buck — jut into the skyline. Hikers and mountain cyclists can access much of the mountain land here thanks to Virginia’s 7,500acre Big Survey Wildlife Management Area and Wytheville’s 1,800-acre Crystal Springs Recreation Area. Best of all, at Crystal Springs, everything — parking, picnicking, even camping at the five primitive sites — is free. Campers should register by calling the Wytheville Recreation Center at 276-223-3378. Wander a little farther from town and the recreation possibilities are just as enticing. This music comes with a view Four festivals bring music lovers of all types to Nelson County, Virginia Enjoy colorful mountain vistas, craft food and beverages, hiking, biking, competitive runs, games, workshops and — oh, yes — live music at a festival Oct. 5–8 in Virginia’s Nelson County. It’s The Festy Experience — one of four music festivals attracting thousands annually to the rural county. The Festy’s Michael Allenby hopes you will “choose your experience.” He offers a quintessential Virginia ambience with a musical backdrop for family outings that surpasses “staring at the stage.” Noting the dusty, “third world” conditions at many festivals, Allenby emphasizes comfort for visitors and artists. “We thought we could do it better,” he said. The Festy has hilly, grassy terrain with rotating performances on two stages convenient to on-site camping with luxury upgrades. There are well-organized routes and parking, a central “hang-out” zone, and free water and steel cups. Allenby curated the 25-band lineup, featuring roots music and gender equality among the artists. Performers include The Infamous
Stringdusters, Ani DiFranco, DriveBy Truckers, Elephant Revival, Sam Bush Band, Beats Antique, the Jerry Douglas Band, and Joan Osborne. Insider tip: Watch our Weekend Update eblast and social media for great discounts on tickets and even a getaway to The Festy. The location is the 387-acre Infinity Downs Farm at 1510 Diggs Mountain Road in Arrington, easily accessible via U.S. Route 29 near Lovingston. The Festy leases the grounds from Lockn’ Festival, which formerly operated from Oak Ridge Farm but now has established permanent residence at Infinity Downs. The larger space allows for infrastructure improvements and development into a multi-use venue. “The music is front and center,” said Dave Frey, of Lockn’, whose next festival is set next year for Aug. 23–27. “We just want people to come and have a good time.” Thirty classic rock and jam bands play continuously from a black box stage turntable. John Fogarty, Gov’t Mule, and Widespread Panic were among recent acts. The experience includes craft

New River Water Trail makes Giles County’s beauty accessible The New River winds 37 beautiful miles through Giles County, Va., past limestone cliffs, mountain views, and a brewery featuring “Moment of Wow” English bitter. These miles are part of the New River Water Trail, a series of boat landings, campgrounds, and access to dining options along the scenic river. “Our water trail makes the New (River) accessible,” said Cora Gnegy, who promotes the county. “Landings every 5 to 8 miles allow paddlers to camp, relax, and visit shops and restaurants.” The county’s two main outfitters — Tangent Outfitters and New River’s
Edge — shuttle paddlers and rent canoes, kayaks, tubes, and standup paddleboards from their central location in Pembroke. Tangent Outfitters offers guided float trips and also can tell you where the fish are biting. “The New River’s beauty is worldclass,” said owner Shawn Hash. “Its entertainment level is superb. On a half-day float trip, two clients can catch 80 to 100 fish.” As it flows through Giles County, the New River — actually one of the world’s oldest rivers — ranges in depth from 5 to 6 inches to 100 feet at the base of Palisade Cliffs. River’s pool-drop ripples keep paddlers energized, but many sections are easy on novices. Freshwater game fish found here, include smallmouth bass, trout, walleye, muskellunge, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Paul Moody, owner of New River’s Edge, specializes in short float and paddle trips from Pembroke to his downstream beach, not far from a riverside campground. Insider tip: For only $15 a person, New River’s Edge guests can borrow a tube, kayak, or canoe and shuttle back and forth over the mile run all day long, picnicking on the shore. “I love sharing this beautiful New River,” Moody said. “I keep my rates set to where a family can experience the awesome connection with the river without having to sell one of the kids to pay for it.”
Reviving Eggleston Five miles upriver from Pembroke lies the county’s oldest community, Eggleston. Named for a springs resort once perched along the river, the village pre-dates the Revolutionary War. Although featured in a 2011 photo book titled Lost Communities of Virginia, Eggleston is getting back on the map again, thanks to the efforts of Giles native Shaena Muldoon. A former event planner, Muldoon returned to “one of the most beautiful places on earth” and opened a really good restaurant in Eggleston’s former general store. “Comfort food with flair” is the description Muldoon sometimes hears in praises of her chef, although she considers the fare “sophisticated Appalachian.” Menu picks include pimento cheese

pizza, pork with blackberry salsa, and a decadent flourless chocolate cake topped with homemade almond ice cream. Muldoon’s Palisades restaurant stands uphill from the river, flanked by the artisan shop she opened in the old hardware store and a 90-yearold cottage she refurbished for guests. Across the street, Muldoon is retrofitting the bank into a coffee shop and lodging suites. Today, the Palisades draws people from around the region. Of course, there are other draws, including
those that the outfitters can help visitors access. Every town on the river trail is within shouting distance of a forest and a hiking trail. With 28 percent of its land in Jefferson National Forest, Giles County earns its name, “Virginia’s Mountain Playground.” The Appalachian Trail, which crosses the river trail at Bluff City, clambers over five mountains, and about 150,000 visitors a year come through Pembroke to feel the waterfalls’ spray at the Cascades, one of Virginia’s most photographed falls.
The New River Water Trail does lead to a “Moment of Wow” at Right Turn Clyde Brewery in downtown Narrows, and possibly around every bend.

“Seven Sisters has one of the best early fall views around,” said Deana Kelly, who promotes the area. “Foliage colors (change) earlier at the higher elevations.” Just up the road lies another enticing view — one that doesn’t require as much sweat. Big Walker Lookout, at 3,405 feet on U.S. Route 52, is a privately owned observation tower, country store, and weekend music venue. It’s also a great place to enjoy local Homestead Dairy ice cream, especially after hiking Monster Rock Trail. The trail is only 1.5 miles out and back to the rock outcropping overlooking the Stony Fork watershed.
Simulating the space environment Part of the exhibit simulates a space environment. Scientifically verified by experts at NASA for accuracy and feasibility, the technology-driven exhibit fosters critical thinking. Participants need to think like astronauts, integrating many ideas. They must make decisions based on information at hand. In the mockup, kids can follow some of the routines, take some of the challenges, and even use some of the specialized gear found in a space habitat. The “Space Quest” exhibit also makes good use of interactive components to engage visitors in a celebration of the spirit of exploration that has marked NASA Langley Research Center’s role in the past, present, and future of space discoveries. Managed by Langley, the Viking Project investigated Mars with the Viking lander; the Mars Exploration Rover’s two mobile robots were sent on a later mission. Simulators enable visitors to travel to Mars aboard a futuristic transport ship, attempt a landing on the moon, and train for a lunar mission. Just as the first moon walk was “one small step,” every space exploration is a compendium of many “small steps,” each critical to the overall mission success. The Orion PA1 Flight Test Vehicle Pad Abort 1, now housed at the center, is one of the critical steps on the course for Mars. Built at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, this capsule successful tested Orion’s launch abort system, which provides escape capability in an emergency during launch or initial ascent. In striking contrast to VASC’s sleek glass exterior, a beautifully restored 1920’s carousel fills the park across the street with music and childhood memories. After spending hours probing the air and outer space, a few twirls on the venerable merrygo-round can bring you comfortably back to Earth.

Sweep across Lancaster County this fall for family fun Take a deep breath of fresh country air. Admire the picture-perfect farmland mirrored in locally stitched patchwork quilts. Hear the mournful wail of the train whistle, the call of peacocks, and the clip-clop of horses drawing buggies. And, finally, indulge in culinary treats: shoofly pie, whoopie pies, and an ice cream flavor that you create yourself.
Now is the time to stimulate your senses and extend summertime with an autumnal family or couple’s getaway to Lancaster County, Pa. Take a ride back in time on the Strasburg Rail Road, a short line operating since 1832. Historic steam engines require nearly 1 ton of coal and enough water to fill a swimming pool to power the 9-mile round trip. Thanks to the efforts of a hard-
working fireman, the 45-minute ride passes by 21 working Amish and Mennonite farms. Passenger cars, looking much the way they did between the World Wars, range from open-air models to the posh President’s Car, where guests can enjoy refreshments and observe the coupling process. With a top speed of 30 mph, it’s a relaxing ride to Paradise and back. Special “Day Out With Thomas” excursions and activities take place Sept. 16–24 and Nov. 17–19 this year. Insider tip: The railroad will let you off along its route at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm and you can catch a later return train. Seasonal activities abound at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm. “Charlotte’s Web 2017,” a maize maze that covers 5 mind-boggling acres with 2.5 miles of paths, and pick-your-own pumpkins and popcorn, are just some of the 50 farm-related activities. Dutch Wonderland provides an assortment of kid-friendly rides and activities and is open weekends in September and October. A night to remember: Sleeping in a tree house on a river island
Columbia-Montour Tourism
A tree house on an island in the Susquehanna River brought the writer and her husband back to nature during their visit.
Last night, I did not want to go to sleep. I wanted to lie on my cot and think about where I was: 10 feet above the ground, in a tree house built around a maple tree on a long narrow island in the middle of the Susquehanna River. My husband, Todd, and I had the whole wild place to ourselves, joined only by wildlife. During our evening walk, we saw white-tailed deer and beavers skimming the river’s surface. The point of the island revealed the footprints of some great blue herons and multiple couples of Canada geese. According to the owner of the island, Chris Ehmer, of Susquehanna Outdoor Adventures LLC, there also was a nesting pair of bald eagles nearby. Ehmer purchased three long narrow islands on the North Branch of the Susquehanna, not far from Bloomsburg, Pa., many years ago. Initially, he kept them for himself and his circle of close friends and family. Recently, he felt moved to share the treasure, and developed one of the most unique outdoor experiences in the Mid-Atlantic. When we arrived, 10 tiki torches encircled our tree house and a welcoming campfire was blazing. Besides Ehmer’s two (soon to be three) tree houses, a cabin is available for rent and there is a large tent camping area. A large communal area in the center of the island hosts unforgettable

outdoor concerts a few times each summer. The 3.5-mile-long island is a sanctuary, with amazing stands of old growth hardwoods and mowed grassy paths. After a delightful evening around the campfire, my husband and I turned in. While he fell immediately into a peaceful sleep, I lie in my sleeping bag and breathed in the freshness and earthy smell of the river. A freight train lumbered by on the shore, and I stood up to see a magical sight of the locomotive’s headlamp cutting through the darkness and illuminating the track ahead and the long stretch of river. When all became quiet again, North American toads shrilled. Pairs of honking geese flew overhead, their great wings flapping as they called to their mates. Lying in that tree house on the island made me feel as though I was in the mighty Susquehanna.
Wake in a tree house Come morning, light streamed through the large screened windows. One of the largest choirs of birds I ever heard sang their hearts out, sounding truly joyous over the start of the day, and we shared their sentiments exactly. We finished off our adventure by having Ehmer shuttle us above his is-
lands as we floated the current back down to his takeout, spotting the majestic pair of bald eagles along the way. Guests can arrange their own paddles and reserve a spot, or, better yet, have Ehmer take care of everything. Large groups can rent the entire island for reunions or private parties and Ehmer can deliver everything, including ice and dinner. In fact, he has even been known to deliver milkshakes at 10:00pm in his jon boat if a guest has a craving. Canoe Susquehanna, another outfitter based on the West Branch of the Susquehanna, also offers guided river trips that are both fun and educational. You can learn about the region’s history, which includes Native Americans, settlers, river towns, and more. If you are looking to make it a weekend along the river, you can traverse the River Rat Brew Trail, central Pennsylvania’s only craft beer trail. Most of the trail breweries are in close proximity to the river. Enjoy fine craft beers and spend the rest of the weekend paddling the beautiful Susquehanna.

Try these Top 5 hiking trails in the Allegheny National Forest As summer’s green gives way to honeyed autumn hues, bring a warm jacket and discover an entirely new side to the Allegheny National Forest, located in northwestern Pennsylvania. The striking colors and textures of fall make us all want to do just one thing — step back and look at the view. Here are the Top 5 trails to hike in the Allegheny National Forest: u Marilla Bridges Trail is a 1-mile loop trail with brilliant fall foliage and water vistas and is rated easy. Highlights of this trail include the wooden Erik Benjamin Covered Bridge, which spans the spillway of the Marilla Reservoir, three rustic wooden trestle bridges crossing mountain streams, and a delightful gazebo located in its southwest corner. This trail is picture perfect for fall photos, and is for non-motorized use only. The trail head is located along Route 346, 5 miles west of the city of Bradford.
u The Kinzua Sky Walk takes you over the Kinzua Gorge in Kinzua Bridge State Park. High in the sky, you experience amazing 360-degree views of the fall foliage from the sky walk’s partial glass overlook. The Kinzua Sky Walk was built on the historic towers of the Kinzua Viaduct, so tracks run up the middle. It extends 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge, at a height of 224 feet. It’s free to hike on the sky walk, and admission to the park is free, too. u The Kinzua Creek Trail is a 0.4-mile, one-way trail down the side of the gorge and is rated difficult. The trail switchbacks along the side of the gorge. At the bottom, you can view the sky walk from below, and have a close-up view of the huge fallen towers that still lie where tornado winds tossed them. The Kinzua Bridge State Park is located at 296 Viaduct Road, Mount Jewett. u The Kinzua Valley Trail is a

A father and daughter take a break along the easy Marilla Bridges Trail in the Allegheny National Forest. 7-mile hiking and biking trail perfect for viewing the autumn golds, brilliant reds, deep oranges, and rich yellows bursting forth during fall in the forestlands of the Alleghenies. The trail, for a time, winds along the banks of the picturesque Kinzua Creek and is rated moderate in its difficulty. It’s surface is crushed limestone, and it is family-friendly, with easy access to the trailheads at Westline or Red Bridge Campground. To reach the Westline trailhead, follow state Route 219 North from the intersection of Routes 6 and 219 at Lantz Corners. To reach the trailhead at the Red Bridge Campground,
travel north from Kane on Route 321 to the campground located along the edge of the Allegheny Reservoir. Lodging is available at the Westline Inn, and cabins and campsites at Red Bridge Campground may be reserved at recreation.gov. u The North Country Trail is the longest, most colorful trail in the Allegheny National Forest and spans 96.3 miles. It is well marked with blue diamonds. The trail is one of three designated National Scenic Trails in Pennsylvania and provides vistas of the

combined federal campaign I staff
CFC campaign set to launch in October The Office of Personnel Management announced that the 2017 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) will begin Oct. 2 and run through Jan. 12. A new donor pledging system should streamline the process. There are two major changes to the CFC for 2017. Federal employees will now be able to pledge
time as well as funds, and federal annuitants and military retirees can continue to donate to CFC through their annuities. The 2016 Combined Federal Campaign in the national capital area reversed a downward trend in donations and raised $47.4 million for local, national, and international charities. Donations exceeded the $47 million goal for the year. Find us in the National/International Unaffiliated Section of the CFC booklet.
We the People
The NRA Foundation and the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund provide resources to fund programs that preserve the Second Amendment for future generations, and meet the challenges that threaten our Constitutional rights. Make us your charity of choice in the Combined Federal Campaign.
The CFC is the only campaign authorized to solicit and collect contributions from federal employees in the workplace on behalf of charitable organizations.

Monocacy earned its name as the battle that saved Washington A visit to Frederick, Md., today can mean visiting the craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries that have made the city and surrounding area their home, dining in the restaurants that line Market and Patrick streets, or sipping a refreshing libation at a rooftop bar. This hip vibe rests easily alongside the area’s Civil War heritage, which includes the Monocacy Battlefield maintained by the National Park Service. While the battlefield is surrounded by busy Interstate 270, Interstate 70, and Maryland Route 355, the site is an amazing green space that allows you to envision the action that took place in June of 1864. Monocacy Junction was an important rail and road feature that led to both Washington and Baltimore, and was critical to Confederate Gen. Jubal Early’s plan to take the Union capital at Washington. In an attempt to provide a diversion that would gain some relief for Gen. Robert E. Lee’s troops besieged at Petersburg, Early launched the South’s third and final major invasion of the North. He collected ransom money from Hagerstown, Middletown, and Frederick after threatening to burn the towns and headed south toward the Georgetown Pike, which he hoped would take his army to Washington. Alerted by B&O Railroad agents of the Confederate activity, Union Gen. Lew Wallace rushed forces to defend the critical Monocacy Junction and called for reinforcements to defend Washington. From the visitor center, you can see where Confederate artillery opened fire the morning of June 9, 1864, trying to dislodge the bridge’s Union defenders. Inside the center, you can follow the battle across the Thomas, Worthington, and Best farms. Outside, a 6-mile self-guided driving tour takes you to the relevant sites, including the site

Six-year-old Glen Worthington watched the battle around his home from a shuttered basement window. He ultimately became a judge, wrote a book about the battle, and led the effort to preserve the battlefield. Though significantly outnumbered, Union forces stubbornly defended their positions and forced Early’s cavalry to find other places to cross the river. Ultimately, the Union troops were forced to retreat, providing the only significant Confederate battle victory in Northern territory. However, the

While walking through the sparsely filled parking lot at the Monocacy Battlefield visitor center, we noticed cars bearing New Jersey, Vermont, and Pennsylvania license plates. One look at a battle map shed possible light on the reason. Troops from all three states played roles in the battle and those states erected three of the five monuments at the park. A company of Vermont soldiers was charged with defending the railroad junction and bridge, and the remainder of the 10th Vermont fought at the Thomas Farm site. The unit fought so fiercely that two of them, Lt. George Davis and Cpl. Alexander Scott, were awarded the Medal of Honor. The 14th New Jersey Regiment is nicknamed the “Monocacy Regiment,” in part because of its role in the battle during which it lost two-thirds of its men. The 14th New Jersey Monument was the first of five monuments erected on the battlefield and its dedication in 1907 was attended by 180 survivors of the regiment. Two Pennsylvania regiments were among the other units that participated in the battle. Monocacy’s Artillery Weekend, Sept. 2–3, offers six demonstrations each day as does Infantry Weekend, Oct. 7–8. Visitors can choose from three battlefield hikes, each less than 2 miles, on Oct. 21

Antietam marks anniversary New grants help with preservation there and at 18 other battlefields Antietam. The bloodiest single day in American history. The name conjures images of Burnside Bridge and the Sunken Road thanks to the numerous photographs taken after the September 1862 battle in Western Maryland. Like many historic sites, the battlefield needs constant care and a recent announcement at the National Park revealed that more than $263,000 is coming to the site to restore the historic Newcomer House and replace 5,000 feet of deteriorated rail fencing where some of the most intense fighting took place. The funds came from the National Park Foundation, the Save Historic Antietam Foundation, the Civil War Trust, and from President Donald Trump’s donation of his first three months of salary as president. “(This) gift will enable us to complete two high-priority preservation maintenance projects,” said Antietam superintendent Susan Trail. The 155th anniversary of the battle will be observed Sept. 16–17 with special tours, hikes, and living history demonstrations. This year also is the 150th anniversary of the Antietam National

America born, torn, and reborn in Orange County, Virginia Good fortune took me to Ellwood Manor in Orange County the same summer day three generations of Lacy family members chose to visit. They were here to see the home of their ancestor, J. Horace Lacy, who owned the estate during the Civil War. This modest farmhouse is the only structure to have survived the Civil War Battle of the Wilderness and served as a hospital and a Confederate headquarters. Located just off Constitution Route 20, Ellwood Manor’s history dates to before the Founding Fathers, when the Spotswood family owned the land. The legendary Marquis de Lafayette stopped here with the Continental Army, and later when he returned to America for a grand tour. Today’s Lacy family is led by Missourian David Miller Lacy, who happily shared their heritage: “My ancestors married rich women.” Planter, soldier, and politician Horace Lacy married well and
farmed 5,000 acres with between 40 and 100 slaves. His impressive riverfront estate, Chatham, was 15 miles away, near Fredericksburg. John Bell, a retired U.S. Forest Service ranger and Orange County resident, led us through Ellwood, and told us how the National Park Service restored it to its Civil War period appearance. Bell said that many visitors come here to see where Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s arm was buried after he was shot by his own men at the 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville. Jackson’s minister, brother to Horace Lacy, suggested it. Bell’s own family heritage motivated him to volunteer with the Friends of the Wilderness Battlefield Inc., which manages the house, grounds, and restoration for the National Park Service. In addition to Ellwood Manor and the National Battlefield Parks sites, Orange County is home to other amazing Civil War-related sites. A must-see for every American is Montpelier, home and estate of

getaway to Ireland’s capital city Capital cities are the best. We’ve never been disappointed in a visit to any capital city, and we’ve probably visited about 30, so our bar was set high when we went to Dublin, Ireland. The capital of the Emerald Isle comfortably exceeded all expectations and offered many pleasant surprises. Following some cursory research online, we decided to stay in the Temple Bar area. This being the hot spot of clubs, live music, and night life, it seemed to also be a great hub for visiting other areas, too. Live music of high quality is absolutely everywhere, reminding us of New Orleans. This was a wise choice, and to make it even nicer, we stayed at the Clarence, a vintage building with rich wood décor. The front opened onto the main drag, and

ham Gaol (jail). A tour here covers Ireland’s rich history from the 1780s through the 1920s, with tragic and heroic events that led to the modern Ireland we know today. This would not have made it on our radar had so many people not listed this as a “must-see.” We are also among those singing the praises since our visit. It really helped us understand the struggle for independence, and natural challenges such as the great famine. Even today, Ireland has not returned to its population level of 200 years ago. Another surprise, Phoenix Park, is a whopping 1,750 acres, more than double the size of New York’s Central Park. It dates back to the 12th century and sits on the shore of Dublin’s famous River Liffey. Approximately a third of the park remains forested where the royal deer roam, part of the original purpose of the park.
Religion and culture No visit to Dublin is complete without a visit to Dublin’s two existing medieval cathedrals: Christ Church Cathedral, the elder of the two, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Christ Church was founded in 1028 and is rich in history. Tour the bell tower and the crypt, which is fascinating with all its artifacts and descriptions of life in those times. St. Patrick’s, named after Ireland’s patron saint, was founded in 1191 and is noted for its 141-foottall spire, and its organ with more than 4,000 pipes. Founded in 1592, Trinity College is Ireland’s
oldest university. Tourists enjoy seeing its famous library, built in the 1700s, which still has its rich wood walls. It contains more than 5 million volumes, many of which are about a half a millennia old. The most famous of them, The Book of Kells, dates back to the 800s and is on display. There are numerous informative exhibitions describing the painstaking process of assembling books 1,200 years ago. The food in Dublin is delicious, abundant, and inexpensive for a capital city. There are a wide variety of restaurants to suit every taste: Italian, Mediterranean, barbeque, steak houses, cafes, and whole food eateries. There were food trucks dotted around town, too, for those on the go. A superb way to end your meal is with a traditional Irish coffee. We also enjoyed poking around

Dublin’s Art and Antique Quarter on Francis Street, just a block or so away from St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where the quality and offerings ranged from thrift stores and a vintage lingerie clothing store to upscale antiques dealers. After seeing the rewarding offerings of Dublin, your return home yields a final pleasant surprise — you clear customs and immigration for America in Ireland. When your plane lands stateside, you simply get off, grab your bags, and exit the airport as if you’ve flown in from a U.S. city. Romance meets adventure in the mountains of Garrett County The Deep Creek Lake area, including the small town of Oakland, has been voted one of the Top 15 Honeymoon Destinations in the United States by TripAdvisor. And the simple reason is that Deep Creek and its surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful. But, you don’t need to be on a honeymoon to experience this scenic splendor. It’s a perfect spot for any romantic weekend getaway. Start by booking a room at one of the many charming inns, such as the North Glade Inn or the Haley Farm Inn and Retreat Center. Haley Farm is set on 65 acres of idyllic farmland and includes sumptuous suites, some with hot tubs and fireplaces. It specializes in weekend packages with yoga, meditation, and spa treatments. Or, escape to a cabin in the woods. Deep Creek features a seemingly endless variety of cabins with mountain or lake views for lovers who want to get away from it all. Check out Railey Mountain Lake Vacations or Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations. For a truly unique experience, book a yurt at the Savage River Lodge. These luxurious tent-like structures include radiant heated floors, kingsized beds, gas fireplace, skylights, and private decks. It’s glamorous camping, otherwise known as “glamping.”

climbing and rappelling classes on 50-foot-tall cliffs at the nearby Fork Run. At the adjacent Wisp Four Seasons Resort, couples can catch a thrill on the mountain coaster. Riders zoom down 1,300 vertical feet on the coaster’s serpentine metal track. High excitement continues at the Flying Squirrel aerial zip line course. The fun and challenging ropes course includes five zip lines, ranging in length from 180 to 400 feet. Couples looking for a little less of an adrenaline pumping experience can try a mountain Segway tour, riding the Segways up and down the ski slopes and into the woods. Or, chill out on the 3,900-acre Deep Creek Lake in a kayak or on a paddleboard. Deep Creek Lake also is a place you can be content while doing nothing. Sit on the balcony or deck with your special someone and take in the view. It’s simply gorgeous most any time of the year, but fall brings a special splendor to the Western Maryland mountains. Don’t miss the 50th annual Autumn Glory Festival, Oct. 11–15. The festival includes parades, concerts, bands, a corn maze, car and crafts shows, and pumpkin chucking. It’s a great way to welcome the season.

Maryland’s Ice Cream Trail features 9 delicious stops You may well argue that Maryland is the nation’s premier ice cream state. Undeniably, Maryland is both first and foremost in American ice cream. First, because in 1744, Maryland’s proprietary governor, Thomas Bladen, reportedly served the first ice cream in the New World. Foremost, because one of the world’s largest ice cream plants is located in Laurel, just north of Washington, D.C. “Our ice cream plant in Laurel, Md., made 114,904 million liters of ice cream in 2015,” said Liz Caselli-Mechael, of Nestlé Corporate Affairs. “We presently produce 141 products made up of Haagen-Dazs pints and bars, Skinny Cow bars and sandwiches, Nestlé DIBs, Nestlé Drumstick, and Nestlé Outshine water ice bars.” To showcase Maryland’s ice cream heritage, the state has inaugurated the “Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail.” Now in its fifth year, the trail links nine Maryland dairies that produce and sell their ice cream directly to consumers. The trail stretches from Ocean City west to the mountains of Washington County, and “Trail Blazers” can get a copy of the Ice Cream Trail Passport from at marylandsbest.net, or at any of the participating creameries. Use the passport to keep track of progress along the trail, to answer a specific dairy question at each creamery, and to collect a stamp at each stop on the trail.
Maryland’s Ice Cream Trail focuses on creameries producing small-batch, craft-made ice cream. Often, the creameries use milk from their own cows or locally produced milk and local fruits. “It’s a great program,” said Kate Dallam, owner of Broom’s Bloom Dairy, a popular creamery and restaurant near Bel Air. “We have seen a lot of interest in the trail and see about three dozen Passports each week.” Broom’s Bloom has been scooping artisan ice cream for 13 years, with 12 to 18 flavors that vary daily. “We even made sweet corn ice cream, using local corn,” said Dallam. “We produce premium ice cream, with 17 percent butter fat and low overrun.” As a general guide, fat content and total solids define four different grades of ice cream: u Economy — legal minimum fat and total solids of 10 percent and 36 percent, respectively u Standard — fat, 10 to 12 percent; total solids, 36 to 38 percent u Premium — fat, 12 to 15 percent; total solids, 38 to 40 percent u Super premium — fat, 15 to 18 percent; total solids, greater than 40 percent Butter fat (or milk fat) increases the richness of ice cream’s flavor and produces the characteristic smooth texture by lubricating the palate. Fat also gives body to the ice cream, but drives up both
the cost and calories. A variety of milk products can be used in ice cream, including whole milk, condensed milk, table cream (18 percent fat), and whipping cream (32 to 35 percent fat). “Overrun” is air added during the mixing process to literally pump up the ice cream’s volume. Soft serve ice cream has 100 to 120 percent overrun, while gelato only has 30 to 40 percent overrun, giving it that smooth, dense flavor.
Other popular trail stops Kilby Cream, in Rising Sun, another popular Ice Cream Trail creamery, started making ice cream in 2005 and offers such flavors as Holstein Cream, Udderly Chocolate, and Mink Mookie. The Kilbys take pride in their careful and conscientious farming practices that produce ice cream “from cow to cone in two days.” The ice cream shop offers 23 flavors, available in cup or cone, pints, ice cream cakes, pies, and bonbons. A playground and farm petting zoo make Kilby’s a “destination dairy.” At South Mountain Creamery, near Middletown, the cows are milked just 50 yards from the creamery, and the milk is made into ice cream within 12 hours. The new “farm-to-table” ice cream pairs fresh dairy products with “local ingredients across the board,” producing the freshest ice cream possible and supporting nearly 200 regional farming partners. Visit all nine participating Maryland creameries, then send your completed Passport to the Maryland Department of Agriculture to enter a drawing to be crowned the 2017 Maryland’s Best Ice Cream Trail Blazer. The grand prize package includes a $50 gift certificate to the winner’s favorite creamery, and other ice cream-related gifts. The program runs until Sept. 25. The posted hours of some of the creameries may vary. To be sure that they are open, call before you go.
Kitchen Guy Vanilla Ice Cream Base 2 eggs 3/4 cup sugar 1 cup milk 1 cup table cream 1 cup whipping cream 1 tablespoon vanilla Using a whisk, beat the eggs. Beat in the sugar. Mix the milk and table cream in a sauce pan and bring almost to a boil. Beat the heated milk-cream mix into the egg mix. Cool the mix and add the whipping cream and vanilla. This mix is excellent for ice cream machines. Vanilla ice cream forms the basis for most of the flavors I make. To make blueberry, I add whole berries and blueberry syrup for the last five minute of the mixing time. For mint chocolate chip, mint flavoring and chocolate bits go into the mix, along with a dash of green food coloring as a crowd pleaser.

‘old Vine’ wines provide taste with complexity and intensity If you’re a wine drinker I’m sure you’ve come across the term “old vines” when shopping for bottles. Sometimes the varietal will follow on some labels such as “old vine zinfandel or “old vine grenache.” Other times, there’s a subheading on the label stating the wine was made from “old vines.” You’ll see the term “vieilles vignes” on French wines, “alte Reben” on German bottles, “binhas velhas” on Portuguese samples, and “viñas viejas” on Spanish ones, for example. You’ll also find that any wine that states it’s made from “old vines” is usually more expensive. So, what exactly does “old vines” mean? Very simply put, the wine was made from grapes from “old vines.” However, understanding what exactly this entails, whether it is better, why it costs more, and whether it is worth the extra price is the key. Let’s start with what is considered an “old vine.” The term is not legally defined or policed. Some producers believe 50 years qualifies as old, while others say 75. With proper care, grapevines can live 100 years or more; however, for most winemakers, anything more than 20 to 30 years of age is usually considered old. This is when the vine starts producing less fruit. Although they produce less, the quality of that fruit is far superior, resulting in wines that are better balanced, more concentrated, and with
more structure, depth, intensity, and complexity. Overall, more complete. Much of this has to do with the fact that they have a stronger, deeper root structure and system that can reach different nutrients in the soil that can alter a wine’s flavor.
Why the extra cost? Most producers will pull out vines that are more than 30 or so years of age because they don’t see the economic value in keeping them going for what they get out of them. Generally, they are a lot more work and expense to maintain, presenting many challenges to the winegrower. As one winemaker put it, “They need to be treated like old people, with lots of care, respect, and nurturing, and like older folks, they may not produce as much, but have wisdom and balance instead.” Some old vines are gnarly, meanlooking things, so pruning them is more like sculpting as each one develops its own unique personality with its own individual problems. They dislike weeds more so than younger vines and require more vineyard management to control them. They tend to deplete the soil of nutrients. making it harder to plant something else in its place when they finally die. If they are so much more work for so little in return and cost more to keep up, one would have to wonder why producers keep them around even though they make better wines.
One phrase says it all: “Old vine love.” Most producers really cherish them. “It’s like having a reliable, old pet that’s always there for you,” a winemaker said. Old vines also deliver more consistency every year, which can’t be said for younger ones. Are they worth the extra price tag? If you like drinking wine with more complexity, intensity, and depth, then the answer is definitely “yes.” A wine bottle saying “old vines” should state the vines’ age somewhere else on the label. I’d be a little skeptical that maybe the term
is merely there as a marketing tool and the wine not really made from old vines at all if the bottle you’re looking at is not from a reliable producer. Be cautious when purchasing these. © Edward Finstein, “The Wine Doctor” 2017. “The Wine Doctor” is Edward Finstein, award-winning author, TV/radio host, renowned wine journalist, international wine judge, professor of wine, and consultant. The kids may be back in school and the end of summer is in sight, but there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the beach with fewer crowds and lower rates. From the Southern Delaware beaches to Ocean City, Md., and Virginia Beach, there are plenty of fall events to take in, as well. Ocean City’s annual SunFest is Sept. 21–24, the big boardwalk art show in Bethany Beach is Sept. 9, and Neptune’s Fall Wine Festival is Sept. 9–10 in Virginia Beach — and that just scratches the surface. Enjoy swimming holes below, eagles above in Hardy County Float down Hardy County’s four rivers however you want: by canoe, kayak, tube, or maybe even on a homemade raft. You’ll be tempted to keep this West Virginia enclave — and its clean waterways, uncrowded paddling excursions, and lovely deep swimming holes — all to yourself. What makes Hardy County so charming? It could be the many water access points — a number that is growing — along four rivers that flow through the county: the South Branch of the Potomac, South Fork, Lost, and Cacapon rivers. Or, it could be the people, who love their region and want to show off its best-kept secrets. Doug Boswell, owner of Keep West Virginia Wild and Wonderful, described one of his favorite floats: “The South Fork is beautiful and clean, intertwined with moving water and deep holes excellent for smallmouth, blue gill, and sunfish.” The outfitter, headquartered in Moorefield, rents kayaks for self-guided trips ranging from 7 to 24 miles, and also provides shuttles from access points and bridges.
In the late summer and fall, the Trough will be awash in color, with steep slopes home to oaks, hickories, and Virginia pine amid the rocky outcrops. It’s remote enough to feel adventurous since it’s only accessible by boat — with some of the best bass fishing in West Virginia — or foot, or aboard the Potomac Eagle scenic excursion train. The Trough General Store rents canoes and kayaks, with trips ranging from 5.5 to 24 miles departing every two hours from 8:00am–2:00pm. There also is a private camping site available behind the store with river access. For both paddling trips and camping, call ahead for reservations. Fall
weekends are already filling up. The most popular trip, a 7-miler from Sycamore Bridge, goes through the Trough. In addition to gorgeous scenery, there’s a good chance you’ll see a bald or golden eagle. Trough General Store owner Jerry Dean said you’ll have a “95 to 98 percent chance” of seeing an eagle. And, he added: “If you’re lucky, they’ll catch a fish right in front of you.” Insider tip: How do you spot an eagle in the Trough? “They perch on the higher trees at the water’s edge,” said Dean. “You need to have your swivel neck on.”
Don’t miss the Trough Ask any paddler in Hardy County for the “mustdo” trip, and it’s the Trough, a 6-mile gorge carved by the South Branch of the Potomac. The Trough has its own bit of history. George Washington coined its name after a surveying expedition into the area in 1748. Eight years later, it was the site of a skirmish during the French and Indian War.

Stop in Peru At the South Fork General Store in Peru, Tom and Mary Burgess make you feel like family. Situated close to the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River, the store — once a post office — is now a gathering spot for paddlers, bicyclists, all-terrain vehicle riders, and wanderers of all sorts. Not on the menu, but always the special here, is a love and knowledge for the waterways, countryside, and community of Hardy County. Ask the Burgesses about the best canoeing and tubing spots while you eat a tuna wrap and fresh-cut potatoes straight out of the air fryer. And, their little beagles, Queenie and Lizzie, will let you pet them for free.

Ride the rails on these 4 West Virginia scenic trains One of the best ways to experience why West Virginia is known as “Wild and Wonderful” is to take a trip by rail to see its mountains, foliage, waterfalls, and wildlife firsthand. The state’s scenic railroad lines offer a variety of excursion experiences. The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad out of Romney, a three-hour trip from the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., puts you on a vintage diesel train that passes by pastures and farms, winds along the south branch of the Potomac River, and then enters the gorge known as the Trough. “It’s so remote, the only access to it is by train or water,” said the railroad’s Jodi Burnsworth. “We have eight documented nests of bald eagles in the thick forest and high mountain walls in the Trough. You have a 90 percent chance of seeing them on the trip.” The train will slow down when eagles are seen. “You get to witness them in their natural habi-
tat,” Burnsworth said. “There’s nothing like it. Narration takes place on the train to point out areas of interest.” The Potomac’s waters are so clear riders can see the fish beneath them. Riders can choose between two different excursions. In September, rides take place on the weekends, but in October, they are available for the entire month. Burnsworth recommended making reservations in advance. The three-hour Trough Trip covers 35 miles round-trip, going to Sycamore Bridge and back. Tickets for the club car include a meal. Insider tip: While the coach fare does not include a meal, a concession car is available with snacks and drinks; small lunch bags or coolers are permitted. A longer all-day, eight-hour excursion is offered on the last Saturday of every month. It includes a layover in Petersburg, allowing passengers to visit shops and restaurants.
Mountain Rail Adventures For about an additional hour drive out of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., visitors can travel the rails in another part of the Mountain State. In 2015, the Cass Scenic Railroad joined the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad’s Mountain Rail Adventures to offer the “Wild Heart of West Virginia Adventure Package.” This package offers a combined ride on two trains, the Cass Scenic Railroad and the Cheat Mountain Salamander, with one ticket and including overnight package options in Elkins or Cass. Passengers starting from Cass ride a steamdriven Shays of the Cass Scenic Railroad to Old Spruce, transfer to the diesel-powered Cheat Mountain Salamander, have an on-board sandwich buffet lunch, spend the night in Elkins to enjoy multiple attractions and return by the same route continued on page WV-12

Chase Gunnoe, spokesman for the railroad, said visitors to Cass can see remnants of the logging industry, which was the reason for the railroad. He noted the trip explores some of the most remote areas of the state. The Wild Heart Adventure package is available Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until Sept. 17, then Thursdays through Sundays, Sept. 21–Oct. 28. A different kind of experience is the fourhour trip on the New Tygart Flyer, which departs from Elkins. Vintage diesel-powered locomotives climb along the cascading Shavers Fork of the Cheat River to the High Falls of Cheat. The trip includes a 30 to 45 minute stopover at the falls, and it’s not unusual to see a deer crossing the tracks before passengers get back on board. A cold sandwich buffet is available, too. The New Tygart Flyer is available Thursdays through Sundays until Sept. 17, then Tuesdays through Sundays, Sept. 19–Oct. 22 and Oct. 26, 27, and 28.

Woods Resort hosts reunions and more in the eastern panhandle Few things capture the human spirit like a reunion. People are getting together because they are filled with warm memories of the group, whether it consists of friends or family. What are the key ingredients for a great reunion location? Certainly, geography plays a role. It can be near an original location such as a school for a class reunion, or a centrally located venue accessible for people coming from many directions. You also need amenities: places for people to stay, activities to cover a span of interests, and a place for people to eat together. The Woods, located in Hedgesville, W.Va., has it all and has been hosting reunions for more than 35 years.
Accommodations to choose from The Woods golf courses have beautiful mountain views, well-kept greens, and scenic — yet challenging — water hazards.
