Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Preheat the oven to 425 F. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large bowl. Add the butter and rub it in with the tips of your fingers until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Mix in the pecans. In a separate bowl, beat the egg with maple syrup and 1 tablespoon of the milk. Stir into the flour mixture with a round-bladed knife to make a soft, coarse-looking dough. If the dough is dry and crumbly and won’t stick together, stir in more milk 1 tablespoon at a time. If the dough is very wet and sticky, work in another tablespoon of flour. Tip out the dough onto a work surface lightly dusted with flour and gently work it with your hands for a few seconds so it looks smoother. Put the dough ball onto the prepared baking sheet. Dip your fingers in flour and pat out the dough to a round about 11⁄4 inches thick and 7 inches across. Using a knife, cut the round into 6 wedges, but do not separate the dough before baking.

According to the National Restaurant Association, seven in 10 consumers say their favorite restaurant foods provide flavors they cannot easily duplicate at home. Perhaps that's one reason why nine in 10 consumers say they enjoy going out to restaurants. While few would likely be shocked to learn that so many people enjoy dining, the types of restaurants consumers prefer reflects a trend that might not have been so important as recently as a decade ago. The National Restaurant Association notes that 68 percent of consumers surveyed for the organization's 2016 Pocket Factbook are more likely to visit a restaurant that offers locally produced food items. Locally produced foods not only support the local economy, but also tend to be more TOP ROUND eco-friendly, as fewer natural resources must be used up to get them BONELESS from the farm to the dinner table. That preferKUNZLER’S SLICED ence for eco-friendly food might also explain why 60 percent of conBONELESS SKINLESS sumers are more likely to choose restaurants that offer eco-friendly foods than establishments that provide no WHOLEY’S FRESH such offerings.

One-on-one nursing care...
Arthritis linked to another condition
People who see dermatologists for the skin condition psoriasis should not take the presence of joint aches and pains lightly, as the two things might be connected. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that psoriasis is a precursor to psoriatic arthritis in 30 percent of patients. What is psoriatic arthritis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the rate of skin cell reproduction. People with psoriasis may experience redness, itchiness and raised bumps (plaques) of skin on various areas of their bodies. Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of arthritis that typically occurs in people with skin psoriasis, but also can be present in those without the skin condition, but particularly among those who have relatives with psoriasis. The American College of Rheumatology says that psoriatic arthritis typically affects the large joints, especially the lower extremities, distal joints of the fingers and toes and the back and sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are crucial to relieving inflammation and preventing permanent joint damage. Symptoms Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis can develop gradually or quickly, and some symptoms can be severe. NPF indicates that common symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include • morning stiffness and tiredness • tenderness, pain and swelling over tendons • swollen fingers and toes; • reduced range of motion; • nail changes, including pitting, and • redness and pain in the eyes. Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are similar to rheumatoid arthritis, gout and reactive arthritis. Doctors will rule out other symptoms that may be indicative of those conditions. The American College of Rheumatology also indicates that psoriatic arthritis is typically blood test negative. The diagFamily Owned & Operated Since 1982 nosis is typically made by a rheumatologist after reviewing a clinical history and performing a physical exam.

Treatment Doctors will need to assess symptoms before deciding on a course of treatment. Mild cases may respond to over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. However, antirheumatic drugs and newer biologic drugs may be prescribed to treat more aggressive cases of psoriatic arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can be useful for swollen joints, and surgery may be necessary to repair badly damaged joints. Individuals who suspect their arthritis may be linked to psoriasis can first speak with a dermatologist or primary care physician. The NPF also offers a screening tool at www.psoriasis.org/psascreening.

Strategies to improve teen driver safety Learning to drive and receiving a driver’s license makes for some exciting times for young drivers. Those first moments of freedom on the road open up many new possibilities for teenagers accustomed to relying on their parents to get them around town. Although being a new driver is exciting, it also carries with it very real risk. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, taking the lives of six teens a day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Harvard Health Publications states that lack of experience behind the wheel is one factor behind high crash rates among teens, but other factors also may be in play. The prefrontal cortex, which contains the neural mechanisms of self-control, is one of the last parts of the brain to mature. As a result, teenagers are prone to taking

risks, behaving impulsively and seeking sensation. These traits can be dangerous behind the wheel of a car. Preventing teenage driving accidents requires some measure of dedication, awareness and education. • Improve driving skills. A driver’s license does not mean drivers have learned all there is to know about driving. In fact, newly licensed drivers still have a lot to learn. Experience only comes with time and practice, and every day presents teen drivers with a new opportunity to expand their skills.
• Watch the speed limit. Speeding makes it more difficult to control a vehicle. Obey the speed limit, and recognize speed limits are suggestions during ideal driving conditions. When driving in inclement weather, reduce speed, even if that means driving below the speed limit. • Reduce distractions. When driving, reduce distractions inside of the car. This includes eating or talking on the phone while driving. It also means fiddling with the radio or checking social media. The CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance —United States, 2015 states that 42 percent of high school students who drive report texting or emailing while driving. Texting while driving creates conditions similar to drinking or using drugs while behind the wheel.
• Avoid peer passengers. Teens should

avoid having other teens or younger children as passengers in their first year as licensed drivers. Other kids can be an added source of distraction inside of the vehicle and may goad drivers into behaviors they would otherwise avoid. Wait until you gain more experience behind the wheel before you start to hone your chauffeur skills.
• Stick to daytime driving. Driving at night can make it much more difficult for drivers to see their surroundings and recognize potential hazards. Within the first few months of earning their licenses, teenagers should drive only during the daytime and log plenty of practice hours driving at night accompanied by an adult until they feel more confident. Unique prom transportation ideas (alcohol-free if renting from a brewery) on prom night. • Segway: Promgoers who have their own Segways or know someone who would can lend them one can take a Segway to their prom, asking a parent or relative to pick it up after they arrive at the festivities so they won’t have to drive it home in the dark. Young women may need to tie their dresses up before climbing on to their Segways, but these two-wheeled electric vehicles certainly provide a fun and unique alternative to traditional prom night transportation.
High school students with ideas on what they would like their ideal prom nights to be might garner inspiration from movies and television shows. But teenagers who hope to emulate their favorite celebrities when planning their proms might be in for some sticker shock as they start shopping around for prom-related services. Students who find they cannot afford limousines to get them to and from their proms, or those who simply want to stray from the prom night norm, can consider the following transportation options. • Tandem bike: Cycling and formal attire might not equate to the best match, but tandem bikes make for a fun alternative to traditional prom transportation. Couples who want to ride tandem bikes to prom can choose attire that’s more amenable to physical activity than tuxedos and ball gowns or simply change at the ceremony site after arriving in style. • School bus: High school seniors attending prom can pay homage to the mode of transportation that’s been getting them to and from school since they were youngsters by renting a school bus with their friends. Combining resources to pay for the bus can make the rental costs less expensive for everyone, and students might have fun riding a big yellow bus one last time.

Weekend Specials
• Group bike: Instead of renting tandem bikes, promgoers who want to pool their resources can look into renting group bikes. Many microbreweries now have beer bikes for adults over 21 who want to enjoy some cold beer while also getting some exercise. While high school students won’t partake in the beer-drinking part of this fun way to get around town, they can contact local breweries or cycling shops to see if they will rent out their group bikes

Dogs and water safety Dogs have solidified their places in many families. Nowadays, more and more dogs accompany their pet parents on trips to the store, vacations and various recreational pursuits — including trips to the beach or the backyard pool. Many people assume all dogs can swim and swim well. But WebMD advises that not all dogs are naturalborn swimmers, and some may be more skillful than others. Unfortunately, there’s no way to gauge a dog’s

swimming prowess until the animal is introduced to water. That’s one reason why dog owners must make water safety a priority when taking their pets near water. Introducing water Make dogs feel comfortable in the water by gradually introducing them to it. Start in an area that can be controlled, such as a kiddie swimming pool. That’s shallow enough to help dogs if they struggle. Show the dog that the water can be enjoyable. Get in with the dog and let him or her get acclimated to the feeling of water on its paws. Let your pet set the pace, being certain not to force the issue. If you’re at the beach or lakeside, throw a stick progressively further from the shore. This can help the dog incrementally adapt to the feeling of deeper water. Tossing your dog into the water or submerging his head can be traumatic.
Recognizing poor swimmers Dogs that have large bodies and short legs often do not swim for fun. American Bulldogs, for example, may not be as skilled or as enthusiastic about swimming as Labradors. If your dog gives you a hard time about swimming or struggles to stay afloat, you may not be able to share laps together. Instead, watch him or her carefully around the water to prevent accidents should continued on page 19

continued from page 18 your pet wander in. Watching for currents At the beach, the same currents and rip tides that can pose a threat to humans can threaten dogs. Even strong swimmers can be affected in rough surf, and dogs may not have the intellect to escape currents, so it’s best to avoid the situation. Washed-up fish and seawater also can be threatening to dogs. Dogs may be enticed by the smell of dead fish, but become ill if they consume decomposing marine life. The same is said for drinking seawater. Bring fresh water along to quench the dog’s thirst so he or she will not be tempted to lap up the saltwater.
Athletes/sports fans welcome Spring Spring is a season of rejuvenation in various ways. Long-dormant lawns and gardens start to get their green back in spring, and many people once again take to the outdoors after months of staying inside to avoid frigid temperatures. Perhaps no group is more enthusiastic about the return of spring than athletes, as spring also marks the return of several sports seasons. Scholastic sports that begin in the spring in many school districts include golf, softball, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, and
Life preservers Dogs riding in boats should be fitted with canine life preservers. These will help dogs stay afloat should they fall in the water, while also making dogs more visible in the water. Water and dogs may seem like a natural fit, but individuals should test their dogs’ swimming abilities and exercise precaution whenever their pets are around water.

rugby. But it's not just scholastic sports that start up in spring. Major League Baseball and its minor league affiliates also begin their seasons in spring. This year, the Major League Baseball season begins on Sunday, April 3. While Major League Soccer begins its season in late winter, the action on the pitch will continue throughout spring. With so much sports coming their way, sports fans and athletes alike may want to spend the final weeks of winter resting up in anticipation of the busy months ahead.

ite decking products. As anyone who has pressurewashed, stained and sealed wood decks can attest, such spaces require lots of upkeep to look new year after year. Composite decks require much less maintenance, making them highly attractive to homeowners who would rather spend time using their decks instead of maintaining them. Composite decking is any type of decking material that is formulated from different recycled materials. The majority of these materials include hard plastic and wood shavings of pulp. Unlike wood, which can fade, crack and rot, composite decking, which has been available for roughly a decade, does not degrade quickly and requires very little upkeep. Available in a variety of wood colors to match outdoor decor, composite decks also can feature artificial wood grains to make them look similar to wood planks. Although composite decks are not completely impervious to the elements, with some occasional washing to impede mold growth and new technology that has improved stain-resistance, many of the pitfalls of other materials can be avoided with composite decks. Composite decking fits in with eco-friendly lifestyles. The planks are made from recycled materials that would normally end up in landfills. Products from Trex, a popular composite decking manufacturer, are made from 1.5 million shopping bags and wood mill waste. As composite decks do not rot away and are long-last-

ing, they will not need to be replaced frequently, which is another eco-friendly benefit. When comparing composite decking brands, look mainly at the colors, materials used in the composition and the fastening systems. Many are fastened with regular deck screws, offers This Old House. The newer systems have channels for hidden fastening, and the composite deck tiles snap into place. Composite decks do have a few drawbacks. They can be expensive — nearly double the initial cost of wood decks. And although they don’t rot, composite planks can scratch. Without refinishing, damaged boards will need to be replaced. Harsh chemicals may fade color and damage the composite materials, so caution is needed. Composite decking remains an in-demand choice for outdoor spaces. Low-maintenance and long-lasting, these decks have quickly become favorites among homeowners

How to plant a tree for successful growth
Why plant trees? There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year. Getting started Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.
Planting the tree Now it is time to amend the soil. It’s not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree. Treat the root ball gently. If the roots are wrapped in burlap, remove the burlap or push it to the bottom of the hole. Backfill the hole with soil Tri County and check that the tree is Chimney Service straight. base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss. Water daily for several weeks until the roots have fanned out. It’s best to leave trees be for the first growing season, only removing broken or diseased limbs. Resist pruning and shaping until the tree has survived its first growing season.

More sunlight and warm temperatures frequently inspire homeowners to spend more time in the great outdoors during spring and summer. Outdoor projects often top homeowners’ to-do lists in spring and summer, with gardens and landscapes taking center stage. Planting more trees around the yard is one popular project that can improve property value and benefit the environment.
