The Pennsylvania Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, a state wide program, through the PA Dept. of Agriculture is designed to put money for the purchase of nutritious produce into the hands of the commonwealth’s population. These checks are for eligible persons 60 and over that meet the 2017 Household Income Eligibility Guidelines (see below). Income is total income (including interest, social security, wages, etc.) 2017 Household Income Eligibility Guidelines are as follows: Single: $22,311 - A Household is a group of related or unrelated individuals Couple: $30,044 - who are living together as one economic unit regardless of age. Three: $37,777 - If your household contains more than three individuals, call 724-349-4509 for income guidelines. This program does NOT include seniors living in nursing home facilities, convents and residential facilities where meals are provided. Each person that qualifies will receive a total of 4 vouchers at $5 each. Each set will be a total of $20 in vouchers to be used at state approved farmers markets. ONLY 1 SET OF VOUCHERS PER PERSON To receive this year’s checks you MUST provide Proof of Age and PA Residency. Myths and misconceptions about autism spectrum disorder Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, is a class of neurological conditions present from early childhood and is often identified through difficulty communicating, using language and understanding abstract concepts. The organization Autism Speaks says that an estimated one out of 42 boys and one in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. Autism is now diagnosed in roughly one out of every 68 children in Canada, and has become the fastest growing and most commonly diagnosed neurological disorder in that country. ASD is estimated to affect tens of millions of people worldwide. But even though ASD is widely recognized, studied and discussed, myths and misconceptions about the disorder continue to circulate. Shedding light on how ASD can help caregivers, peers and anyone who routinely interacts with individuals who fall on the spectrum.

ASD is not a single disorder

Although autism and ASD are often used interchangeably, these names do not define one specific disorder. ASD is now an umbrella term that includes autism, Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and Rett syndrome, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of

Mental Disorder, 5th edition (DSM-5) revised in 2013. ASD is often perceived through communication deficits that can include misinterpreted or nonverbal interactions. Individuals also may have challenges in bonding/friendship development.

People with ASD can understand and express emotion

Although communication troubles may be present, those with ASD can and do feel emotions. But they may not be able to express these emotions the same way as others do. Also, just because someone has ASD doesn’t mean he or she is unable to understand the emotions of others. Rather, the person may need firm and direct indications of how another person is feeling to understand. Reading body language or tone of voice alone may be inadequate to someone with ASD. School-aged children can learn from this, recognizing that someone with ASD may want to have friends and socialize, but he or she may not know how to facilitate these engagements.

ASD does not produce carbon-copy symptoms

Characteristics of ASD can vary widely from person to person. One person’s limitations may not be present in another.

ASD is not just a children’s disease

There is no cure for ASD, and symptoms may not be reversible, which means that autism is a lifelong condition. Children who are diagnosed will grow into young people and adults with autism. During their children’s formative years, parents may wrestle with ideas, themes, etiquette, and more as they plan birthday parties to remember. Hosting birthday parties that touch on all the right notes can be easier if parents follow a handful of strategies that many parents have been employing for years. • Involve your child. Chances are your son or daughter has been plotting out ideas for his or her party since last year’s festivities ended. Ask questions about what he or she would like to do this year. Seek your child’s input on the guest list and preferred theme. Playing an active roll in party planning can make kids even more excited about their birthday parties. • Focus on fun and making your child feel special. Some parents feel birthday parties must be expensive and all-encompassing bashes. But many children simply want parties that allow them to participate in an activity they enjoy, eat sweets and share the experience with their closest friends. Recognizing this can help parents keep their workloads and budgets in check. • Trim the guest list. Parents should not feel the need to invite every acquaintance to their children’s birthday parties. Parents understandably don’t want to exclude or offend anyone by leaving them off the guest list. However, try to limit the guests to around 10, including the guest of honor. This makes the entire party more manageable. • Keep it quiet. Make sure your child avoids bragging about the party at school or at extracurricular activities. Doing so many offend those classmates who are not on the guest list. Send invites directly to homes rather than distributing them at school so that no one feels excluded. • Develop backup plans. At Randall, it’s all about chemistry By SEAN YODER news@indianagazette.net CHERRY TREE — Along a back road near Cherry Tree is a driveway with a small sign pointing the way down a curving lane toward a former mining building that houses Randall Industries’ chemical compounding plant. Though humble in its appearance and location, Randall Industries is competing in the global marketplace with huge industrial companies, hoping their customer service and problem-solving can keep them jockeying with the giants. Kay McCoy has been head chemist and manager with Randall Industries for 19 years, since before it was acquired by Greg Spencer, a Pittsburgh-based former U.S. Steel executive, in 2006. Before that, it was known as Space Chemical. For McCoy, working in a former mining building has an element of circular storytelling. His father was killed in a mining accident when McCoy was a young boy and is buried just miles from where McCoy now works. His grandfather suffered from black lung and his brother continued on page 18

Instead of sorting coal, the two full-time production workers and McCoy mix chemicals, dyes and water to produce a large array of products — more than 300 — like degreasers and descalers and odor controllers. McCoy and the workers are aided only by a secretary at the Cherry Tree building and another dozen people at the Pittsburgh office. Randall’s products produced in Indiana County then find their way to regional and national markets. They’ve provided their signature product, a descaler called Free Flo 34, to Quantum Shanghai Manufacturing Company in Shanghai, once the largest computer manufacturer in the world. The company also ships to Taiwan and Hong Kong. There’s a strong market for bulk chemical supplies in Pittsburgh, too, with cleaning supplies to UPMC and other hospitals, and degreasers to the City of Pittsburgh for its vehicle maintenance buildings. McCoy has been on board the USS Eisenhower, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier that is among the largest in the world, as well as the USNS Grasp, known for the

recovery of the fuselage of the plane piloted by John F. Kennedy Jr. that crashed in 1999. When McCoy was repping Space Chemical to the Department of Defense, the company was providing aircraft wash for Navy planes and ships. While working to Navy specs, McCoy had to ensure the products passed not only the cleaning tests, but were also biodegradable and would pass corrosion tests on steel, aluminum, titanium, silver-plated steel and polycarbonates. “It’s basically a highly tested and inspected product for degreasing and cleaning and doing that as biodegradable.” He said it also made them good at altering their formulas to fall in with specs for other needs, making them adaptable. When he’s in the lab making a new formula or altering an existing one, McCoy said he’s looking for synergistic combinations that perform to the specs but also accomplish the same task, or even do it better. Now that those Department of Defense contracts have largely dried up, McCoy said they’ve had to focus on different markets and new problem solving. A step up the ladder at Randall Industries headquarters in Pittsburgh, Spencer said his company philosophy is

to give people a second chance. He said his 30 years of corporate experience has given him an opportunity to give back to the community, and hire and mentor people who may have made mistakes in the past. “People feel better about themselves when they work,” he said. Spencer said what differentiates Randall from other chemical companies is that “none of our competitors will send a chemist out to help with a problem.” “He’s an exceptional chemist,” Spencer said of McCoy. “He really is the backbone of the company.” Now the company is trying to branch out more locally and regionally, and Spencer said he would like to see more of Randall’s products used in Indiana County.

Before the malls, before the box stores and dot coms, there were the mom-and-pop shops and the little personal-service empires, many made of a single man’s sweat, determination and dreams. In the day when department stores, 5-and-10s, butcher shops, hardware stores and furniture dealers prevailed, you could count on a good shoe repair shop, maybe two or three, in the business district. Troutman’s, G.C. Murphy’s and Rend Bakery are gone but Valenti Shoe Service still stands, a harbinger to the

days before the rush to the suburbs and the internet. Today, in a revitalized downtown flush with boutiques, niche eateries and professional services, thirdgeneration owner Jeff Valenti saves soles in a tiny storefront half a block from Philadelphia Street. Stepping through the door at Valenti’s is like stepping back in time. Decades-old machines dominate the workbench. Commercial grade stitching machines go back 60 years or more. “I have two nailers in the back, from the ’70s,” Jeff Valenti explained. “That’s the newest equipment I have. The rest is from the ’50s and ’60s; it all still runs.” Yet Valenti’s thrives in part because of modern technology. No, not the way most do. The store has no website.

There was a guy in Windber who died; I bought all his material.” Same thing when old cobblers passed on in State College and Kittanning. “When they close, I get those towns. They come to me,” Valenti said. “It used to be every little town had a shoe repair at one time. Homer City, Clymer, Punxsutawney. Now it’s just me, a guy in Greensburg and another in Johnstown. And there’s probably somebody in Pittsburgh.” The evidence is right there. Atop one of his huge sewing machines sat a package addressed to someone in Brockway. Valenti has arranged for drop-off points at East End Laundromat in Punxsutawney and at Master Cleaners in Punxsutawney, and has customers who ship their shoes to him from all over. “The farthest pair I ever got was from Maui, Hawaii,” he said. “The lady is from this area and she’s selling real estate there. There’s no shoe repair on the whole

island of Maui. It cost more to ship them here and back pain they had go away but they got a little limp now. And I just have to put in an adjustment on the one shoe than it cost to repair them.” It wasn’t hard for Valenti to categorize his customers. continued on page 24 His business fits into a few easy categories. Such figures illustrate the role that social media plays in the average person’s life while suggesting that the influence of social media remains considerable. Business owners know that thriving in the 21st century and beyond requires the utilization of social media to connect with prospective customers and promote products. But the ever-changing nature of social media can make it difficult for business owners to stay abreast of the latest trends. Critters inside a home are a cause for concern, but some of these uninvited guests inspire more ire than others. Bed bugs are among the least popular critters people can encounter. Bed bugs can quickly change from being a minor nuisance to a major infestation. Therefore, understanding bed bugs, how they spread and when and how to treat a bed bug infestation is knowledge all people should have so they can nip bed bug problems in the bud before they become more serious. The Environmental Protection Agency says many bugs that resemble bed bugs. Identifying bed bugs correctly is a critical first step to treating an infestation. Here are some of the more notable attributes of bed bugs: • Bed bugs are generally long and brown with a flat oval-shaped body around the size of an apple seed. Bed bugs that have recently fed will be balloon-like and reddish-brown in color. • Young bed bugs (nymphs) are smaller, and their color is a translucent white-yellow. • Bed bug eggs are pearl-white in color and the size of a pinhead. • Bed bugs have six legs and two antennae and they cannot fly. They cannot jump long distances, instead moving by crawling and climbing. They can climb heights and drop down from above onto beds to find a meal. They even can hide in cracks along the top or bottom of a wall. Bed bugs can survive and remain active at temperatures as low as 46 F, advises the EPA. Heat is what kills them most readily, and a room or area must be hotter than 113 F consistently to do so. Avoiding bed bugs requires diligence. Reducing clutter, inspecting secondhand furniture for bed bugs and vacuuming frequently can help. Check luggage racks and hotel rooms for bed bugs prior to remaining in the room. Cold and hot treatments may kill some of the bed bugs, but an infestation usually will require treatment by a professional exterminator. Salmonella is ‘no yolk’ when raising backyard chickens City dwellers and suburbanites have flown the coop, so to speak. A growing interest in raising chickens has enabled coops and nesting birds to spring up in neighborhoods one would not typically associate with chickens. Sometimes dubbed “urban homesteading” or “urban farming,” these homegrown operations enable people to enjoy fresh eggs from the comfort of home. Henhouses are just another extension of methods to reap the benefits of fresh, local and nonfactoryproduced foods. Although advocates insist that raising chickens on a small scale makes the birds less likely to carry disease than factory-farmed chickens, anyone raising chickens needs to be aware of the potential for disease — particularly salmonella. Also, it’s important to care for chickens in a manner that is humane and in line with local laws.

What is salmonella?

Salmonella is a common bacteria that lives in the intestinal tract of humans, other mammals and some birds, including chickens. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 1.2 million illnesses and 450 deaths are attributed to salmonella annually in the United States. The illness causes diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps between 12 and 72 hours after infection and can last between four and seven days. Salmonella can cause death when not properly treated with antibiotics.

Spreading salmonella

Although humans cannot catch salmonella from chickens the way one would contract a cold, they can catch it through handling or consuming eggs of infected birds. The rural newsletter and farming resource Grit says salmonella can then be transmitted to humans who eat improperly cooked meat or eggs from infected birds or from putting their hands in your mouths after touching chickens or eggs that have come in contact with contaminated rodent or chicken feces. The elderly, people with weakened immune systems and young children are at the highest risk for salmonella infection than others. Children who help gather eggs and do not thoroughly wash their hands afterward can be at increased risk.

Maintaining clean conditions and routinely inspecting chickens for good health can help lower the risk of salmonella infection. Chicks and adult chickens that have salmonella may produce loose yellow or green droppings; have a drop in egg production, increased thirst and decreased feed consumption; and show signs of weight loss. Look for rodents in the henhouse, as infected mice or other small rodents may transmit salmonella as well. Chickens also need safe, roomy clean conditions to remain healthy and content. According to the resource MyPetChicken, a diet of whole grains and seeds also may be associated with decreased salmonella colonies. Some experts warn against washing eggs as a preventative method. According to a report written by Diane Schivera, an organic livestock specialist for the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, thoroughly cleaning egg shells can remove a protective “bloom” that prevents bacteria from entering eggs. Eggs shouldn’t be scrubbed, but some suggest a warm water rinse that will push dirt away from the shell’s pores. Old eggs are more susceptible to bacteria penetration. Storing eggs at room temperature may cause them to degrade faster. Once eggs are gathered, individuals should wash their hands and make sure the eggs are chilled. Salmonella can be prevented in backyard chicken coops. Plus, it’s important to note that risk of infection is very small. The American Egg Board’s Egg Safety reference says an average consumer might encounter a contaminated egg once every 84 years.

Over time a car’s exterior can fade or suffer some dings and dents. The vinyl wrap completely covers the paint of the vehicle. But because car wraps can be removed, they do not permanently change the vehicle and are therefore unlikely to affect its resale value. Car wrapping can take less time than a labor-intensive paint job. Some jobs can be completed in only two or three days. Car wraps also may be the less expensive option if you’re not selecting a complicated, custom design. Many car wraps will last between five to seven years, which is on par with the life span of a professional paint job, which lasts five to 10 years. How to avoid hot weather automotive breakdowns When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Recognizing potential hot-weather risks and performing routine checks on the vehicle are the keys to keeping vehicles in top form.

Battery

Excessive heat can shorten the life of a battery because it causes battery fluid to evaporate more quickly. This, in turn, can damage the internal structure of the battery. AAA reports that car battery issues are the most common breakdown calls. It’s a good idea to top off a battery with distilled water if it is the kind that requires it. Low-maintenance batteries may not have filler caps and will not require water. Inspect the battery for corrosion and leakage of battery acid. This could be a sign that the battery is getting old and will need to be replaced.

Cooling system

Cooling systems work hard to keep the flow of air to the engine and prevent it from overheating during warm seasons. Compromised cooling fans or lack of coolant can be troublesome. To avoid overheating, check coolant levels before getting on the road. In addition, have the cooling system checked by a trained mechanic prior

to the summer driving season. It’s a small price to pay to avoid extensive engine damage from overheating.

Tires

Hot weather causes the pressure inside of tires to rise. Overinflated tires can wear down prematurely or result in blowouts. The Car Care Council recommends checking tire pressure routinely in the summer, when tires are cold. Follow the guidelines in the owner’s manual for recommended air pressure. Look for improper tread wear, weak spots or other tire damage that may end up causing flats.

Fluid levels

Hot weather can put extra demand on all fluids and engine components. Check transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and engine oil levels. Top off or change when necessary.

Pack with breakdowns in mind

Plan ahead for potential summer breakdowns by bringing along water, snacks, sunscreen, and an emergency medical kit. Be sure mobile phones are fully charged and that the number of a tow service or roadside assistance crew is entered into your list of contacts in the event of an emergency. With warm-weather road trips beckoning, it’s time to plan accordingly to prevent breakdowns that can derail fun.
