Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The type of car a person drives may offer hints about his or her personality. Though books should never be judged by their covers, very often individuals judge others by the clothes they wear, the home they live in and even the car they drive. It can be interesting to examine what a particular car says about the person behind the wheel. More than 200 million drivers are licensed in the United States and Canada, and these drivers choose their vehicles for a variety of reasons. Some choose vehicles because of their utility, while others select a particular car or truck because of the message it conveys. Very often drivers will idealize their vehicles, lending them human qualities or naming them as if they were a friend. Sometimes owners will seek attributes in a vehicle that mirror their own self-image. "A car says a lot about a person," says Dr. Charles Kenny, a consumer psychologist who studies car buyers and their needs. It's a reflection of who you are." Just think about the once-popular minivan. Minivans once conveyed the image of the ideal family vehicle driven primarily by mothers. But in recent years, minivan sales have dipped so much that certain brands no longer produce them. Many drivers no longer want to present the image that comes

with driving a minivan, compelling many to opt for crossovers and SUVs instead. Although there are some stereotypes attached to owning certain vehicles, some truths lie beyond the jokes and banter. Sports car owners can be flashy and crave attention. They may want to live on the edge with high speed or know their sleek rides will impress others on the road. Highend roadsters may make a statement about financial status as well, as such cars are often among the most expensive vehicles on the road. Sedan owners may be especially practical people, as sedans are large enough to fit a number of passengers, but they're also affordable and tend to boast good fuel economy. Drivers of compacts and economy cars could fall into two categories. There are those who are just starting out financially and may not be able to afford a larger vehicle, while others choose economy cars, particularly hybrids and electric subcompacts, because such vehicles tend to be more eco-friendly. Sport-utility vehicles premiered as vehicles designed for sporting and off-roading. Not too long ago it was rare to see too many

Your Vehicle May Offer Insight On Your Personality trucks on the roadways. Now you'd be hard-pressed to find roadways that aren't flooded with SUVs. Mid-sized SUVs have become the new minivan, making SUVs some of the most popular vehicles on the roads. Functionality is the backbone of trucks. Truck owners generally have driven pickups most of their lives and tend to live in more rural areas. Some will outfit their trucks with larger tires and lift kits, and these drivers could be looking for power and attention on the road. Luxury vehicles from manufacturers like Lexus, Audi, Acura, BMW, and Jaguar are largely driven by white collar professionals who have the cash to afford vehicles with all the bells and whistles. The perfect gift for an angler!

Stream & Lake Map of Pennsylvania

LOST STREAM MAP The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF PENNSYLVANIA was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. The map is known as the LOST STREAM MAP to some anglers. Professor Higbee painstakingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto the map. It sold extremely well - until the printer declared bankruptcy and hauled Higbee’s work to the landfill. The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. But reprints were impossible because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Higbee was even offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. Then, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true after computers made it possible to reprint the map.

Why every angler and boater needs this map

Professor Higbee’s® Stream & Lake Map of Pennsylvania is the first and only highly detailed map of its kind. The 3-foot-by-5-foot Pennsylvania map shows 45,000 miles of streams plus lakes.

Common Mistakes Made On Home Renovation Projects Home improvement projects can turn a house into a home. Homeowners plan scores of renovations to transform living spaces into rooms that reflect their personal tastes and comforts. Homeowners going it alone may find things do not always go as planned. In fact, a Harris Interactive study found that 85 percent of homeowners say remodeling is a more stressful undertaking than buying a home. But homeowners about to embark on home improvement projects can make the process go more smoothly by avoiding these common pitfalls.

Making trendy or overpersonal improvements Homeowners who plan to stay in their homes for the long run have more free reign when it comes to renovating their homes. Such homeowners can create a billiards room or paint a room hot pink if they so prefer. However, if the goal is to make improvements in order to sell a property, overly personal touches may make a property less appealing to prospective buyers. Trends come and go, and improvements can be expensive. If your ultimate goal is to sell your home, opt for renovations that will look beautiful through the ages and avoid bold choices that may only appeal to a select few buyers.

Failing to understand the scope of the project Some homeowners don't realize just how big a commitment they have made until they get their hands dirty. But understanding the scope of the project, including how much demolition and reconstruction is involved and how much time a project will take can help homeowners avoid some of the stress that comes with renovation projects. For example, a bathroom renovation may require the removal of drywall, reinforcement of flooring to accommodate a new bathtub or shower enclosure and the installation of new plumbing and wiring behind walls. So such a renovation is far more detailed than simply replacing faucets.

Forgetting to properly vet all workers It is important to vet your contractor, but don't forget to vet potential subcontractors as well. Failing to do so can prove a costly mistake. Contractors often look to subcontractors to perform certain parts of a job, and it is the responsibility of homeowners to vet these workers.

Not establishing a budget Homeowners must develop a project budget to ensure their projects do not drain their finances. If your budget is so inflexible that you can't afford the materials you prefer, you may want to postpone the project and save more money so you can eventually afford to do it right. Without a budget in place, it is easy to overspend, and that can put you in financial peril down the line. Worrying about coming up with money to pay for materials and labor also can induce stress. Avoid the anxiety by setting a firm budget.

Expecting everything to go as planned Optimism is great, but you also should be a realist. Knowing what potentially could go wrong puts you in a better position to handle any problems should they arise. The project might go off without a hitch, but plan for a few hiccups along the way. Overestimating DIY abilities Overzealous homeowners may see a renovation project in a magazine or on television and immediately think they can do the work themselves. Unless you have the tools and the skills necessary to do the work, tackling too much can be problematic. In the long run, leaving the work to a professional may save you money. Home improvements can be stressful, but homeowners can lessen that stress by avoiding common renovation mistakes.

INDIANA- Those who are familiar with Darlene Cathrine Palmer’s “Water-drop photography” know the magic she brings to her pictures with something as simple as a drop of water. Darlene’s creative talent translates an element in our everyday lives and translates it into award winning pieces of art. Darlene was born in Indiana County and is a self-taught photographer. Her career has taken her in many different directions within the world of photography which included weddings, sporting events and eventually opening her own portrait studio. But in 2012 Darlene decided that she wanted to pursue something completely different, something that would create a WOW effect. Through experimentation Darlene found what she was looking for as she entered the world of “Waterdrop photography”. This process consists of capturing the minutest details of drops of water colliding in mid- air. Each photograph is unique, authentic and arrives through the process of timing, colors, lighting and most of all… patience!! “I’m the first to admit that it is amazing how such beautiful images are created from a simple drop of water.” shared Darlene, “I enjoy highlighting the beauty in things we take for granted in our lives.”

From page 5. Riddle Answer: An echo

Darlene’s photography has been displayed at the Artist Hand Gallery in Indiana, PA since 2012; she presently has 5 framed photos on display and available for purchase. 20 of Darlene’s photographs were on display at the Urgent Care facility at the Indiana Regional Medical Center in 2013. She received Indiana Art Association’s awards for her water-drop photography in 2013 and 2014.

Darlene is a member of the Indiana Arts Association and recently donated two of her photos to the Breast Cancer Awareness Auction.

LOCAL BUSINESS A Salute to our Local Businesses For Building our Community & Strengthening America Everyday!

Putting the Spotlight on Valenti’s Shoe Service by Elaine Kozak | ekozak@indianagazette.net INDIANA- Jeff Valenti (owner of Valenti’s Shoe Service) is a master shoe repair craftsman who uses his knowledge and many years’ experience to provide customers with personalized service (whether he is replacing soles and heels or fitting custom orthotics). Started in 1942 by Frank Valenti, Jeff’s grandfather, Valenti’s Shoe Service has provided a second life to shoes and boots that otherwise would need to be discarded. Customers are searching for the ability to extend the life of wearing their favorite shoes… Valenti’s provides that service. Valenti’s Shoe Service will replace heels and soles on shoes, fashion boots, hunting boots and snow boots. In addition, they serve local physicians, therapists and chiropractors by building custom lifts, insoles, arches and wedges for their patients with orthopedic knee, hip and foot issues. Other services at Valenti’s are polishing shoes, stretching footwear, replacing zippers in boots, shoes and handbags; repairing belts and handbags and dying handbags and shoes to refresh their color or change to a new one. Footwear accessories, such as laces, customized insoles, a wide variety of shoe polishes and protection against salt and water are also sold at Valenti’s. “We’ll work with the customer until they are happy…we’re a service, not a store.” Valenti’s has a customer base that not only reaches across Indiana County, but across the U.S. Many loyal customers mail their shoes for repair from as far as Maui, Hawaii. Pictured above from left: Sandy Valenti and Jeff Valenti (Owner). In 1996 Jeff assumed the reigns of the business from his father, Frank, who taught him from childhood how to shine shoes, and eventually, repair and build custom fitting footwear. Jeff’s skill and passion for his craft is shown in each customer’s order. According to Sandy Valenti (Jeff’s mother), “Jeff has much more patience and skill in his craft than even his father or grandfather.” Valenti’s Shoe Service is located at 26 S. 7th Street, Indiana, PA 15701. Business hours are Monday thru Friday 7:30am – 4:30pm. Valenti’s offers drop-off service in Saltsburg, Punxsutawney and Dubois. For more information please call 724.465.6655. Power tool safety tips

Power tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improvement projects. Professional contractors regularly rely on power tools for cutting and sanding, and many do-it-yourself renovators follow suit and invest in power tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. According to the Work Safe Center, power tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping safe is of the utmost priority when using power tools. Here’s how: · Read all manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines before use. · Keep your tools clean and in proper operating condition. · Use the right tool for the job. · Always wear eye protection, such as safety glasses or goggles. · Wear standard cotton or leather work gloves to protect hands. · Consider the use of earplugs or earmuffs with loud power tools. · Don’t use power tools in proximity to flammable vapors, dust or construction materials. · Always check that wires are kept away from blades. · Maintain a tight grip on a tool. · Do not overreach when using tools, and maintain balance. · Pay attention when working with any power tool. · Only use attachments specifically recommended for the power tools and ensure proper installation. · Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime when tools are not in use. · Routinely inspect tools for damage. · Keep tools stored in secure locations when not in use.

The many ways buying locally grown foods pays dividends The popularity of organic foods and stores that cater to customers who prefer such foods continues to grow, and that growth has contributed to a growing awareness among shoppers of where the food they eat comes from. Many consumers now recognize the impact that food production has on the environment, and that recognition has spurred interest in locally grown foods. Locally grown foods are those that are grown within your community or a community nearby. Such foods do not need to be shipped hundreds of miles before they ultimately find their way onto your plate, and many people find that contributes to meals that are more fresh than meals made up of foods shipped from afar. But freshness is not the only benefit to purchasing locally grown foods, which pay various dividends for people and the planet. · Locally grown foods benefit the environment. The phrase “field to plate” is significant to consumers who prefer locally grown foods. That phrase refers to the distance food travels from the grower to the plate on your dinner table. Estimates vary depending on the source, but advocates of locally grown food suggest that it reduces the field to plate distance by an average of 1,300 miles. That’s a significant feather in locally grown foods’ cap, as the Council on the Environment of New York City notes that it takes 435 fossil-fuel calories to fly a single five calorie strawberry from California to New York. Buying locally preserves that energy that is used to transport foods from afar. · Locally grown foods fuel your local economy. In addition to benefitting the environment, locally grown foods stimulate your local economy. Local, independent farmers have largely fallen by the wayside in the 21st century, as industrial agribusinesses have taken over the produce sections in grocery stores across the

country. But local, independent farmers are making a comeback, thanks in large part to consumer demand for organic foods. Supporting such farmers who grow their foods locally means you’re putting money back into your own community, a worthwhile effort at a time when so many small communities are struggling economically. · Buying locally grown foods contributes to biodiversity. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, more than 75 percent of agricultural genetic diversity was lost in the 20th century. That’s thanks in large part to industrial agribusinesses that cultivate fruits and vegetables that are bred for fast maturation. But small, local farms typically grow a wider variety of fruits and vegetables in an effort to extend their growing seasons. That means consumers of locally grown foods have access to more fruits and vegetables, and therefore more flavor. · Buying locally maintains beautiful landscapes. Farmland has been on the decline for decades, as cement and asphalt have made millions of acres of once beautiful farmland disappear. Buying locally helps to maintain the green space your community and surrounding communities have left. That makes for great road trips and even helps to sustain local wildlife populations. · Locally grown foods can be more nutritious. Fruits and vegetables can rapidly lose nutrients once they are harvested. That’s problematic when buying such foods from industrial agribusinesses that need substantial time to get their products from the farm to the shelves at your local grocery chain. But buying from local farmers increases the likelihood that the fruits and vegetables you purchase were just picked and therefore have yet to lose a significant amount of nutrients.

Keep your heart strong

87% - 92%

Heart health should be a concern for people of all ages, but especially so for men and women over 50. That’s because, according to the American Heart Association, even men and women who are free of cardiovascular disease at age 50 are at a significant lifetime risk of developing the disease.

But heart disease does not have to be an accepted byproduct of aging. For example, a 2014 study published in the AHA journal Circulation found that maintaining or increasing physical activity after age 65 can improve the heart’s well-being and lower risk of heart attack. In addition to increasing physical activity as they age, older men and women who understand heart disease and learn to recognize its symptoms have a greater chance of minimizing its affects and lowering their risk of having a heart attack. What are the symptoms of heart disease? Heart disease is a blanket term used to describe a host of conditions, so symptoms vary depending on each individual condition. The following are some of the more widely known conditions and their symptoms: · Hypertension: Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a largely symptomless form of heart disease. The AHA notes that the idea that hypertension produces symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, facial flushing, nervousness, and sweating is a misconception. Symptoms typically do not alert men and women to the presence of hypertension, highlighting the emphasis men and women should place on routine visits to the doctor’s office, where their blood pressure can be taken. · Heart attack: The symptoms of a heart attack are different than the symptoms of heart disease that may lead to heart attack. The former can be found by visiting www.heart.org. Signs that you may be heading toward a heart attack include undue fatigue, palpitations continued on page 29

· Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk for a host of ailments, including heart disease. Quitting is a great way to start getting your heart and other parts of your body back on track. · Include heart-healthy foods in your diet. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables and low in cholesterol, salt and saturated fat promotes heart health. · Don’t drink alcohol to excess. Like smoking, drinking alcohol to excess can lead to a host of problems, such as high blood pressure, arrhythmia and high cholesterol, each of which increases your risk of heart disease. · Lose weight. Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for heart disease. If you have already started to exercise daily and eat a more heart-healthy diet, then you’re on your way to losing weight. Consult your physician if diet and exercise don’t seem to be helping you to shed pounds. Heart disease kills millions of people across the globe each year, many of whom are over 50. But men and women who learn about heart disease and how to reduce their risk stand a far greater chance of fighting the disease.
