Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Did you know? Baby Boomers make up the largest generation of Americans born in United States history. Boomers include anyone born between the years 1946 and 1964, as the number of births began to rise as World War II veterans returned home from battle. The greatest number of Baby Boomers were born in 1957, when numbers peaked at 4,300,00. That equates to roughly 8 children born per minute throughout the year. By 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers, or those born in 1964, will be eligible for many senior benefits offered to people age 55 and up. Ten years later, most will be eligible for retirement.

Though March may mark the official arrival of spring, the warm weather synonymous with spring typically does not arrive until April or May. St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who spend the day outdoors celebrating their Irish heritage would do well to warm up with a hearty meal once the revelry ends. Irish stew is tailor-made for such feasts, as it aligns with the theme of the day and also serves as a warm and filling meal. Slow cookers make whipping up a batch of Irish stew somewhat effortless. Simply combine the ingredients in the morning, then return at night to a completely cooked meal you can enjoy with family and friends. Any favorite stew recipe can be adapted to the slow cooker. For inspiration, try this variation.
(Serves 4-6)
TICKETS-BY-MAIL Reserved Tickets $8.00 Each Reserved seating by mail is on first-come-first-served best available basis.

Simple defensive driving techniques anyone can employ Driving defensively is a great way for motorists to reduce their risks of accident, maintain their vehicles over the long haul and save money on their auto insurance. But driving can be habit-forming, and over time many drivers develop habits that can compromise their safety on the road. No driver wants to make roads less safe, and many may just need to reacquaint themselves with the following defensive driving techniques they learned way back when they first started driving as teenagers.

Drivers may even be bringing additional distractions with them into their vehicles. When getting behind the wheel, keep your stereo speakers low and turn off all of your devices so you aren’t tempted to check emails or text messages while driving.
· Don’t be in such a hurry. Perhaps the most effective defensive driving technique is to slow down when on the road. That’s easier said than done, especially for commuters who are running late and trying to get to the office on time. But making a conscious effort to slow down, even if you are a few minutes late for work 4 or running for TO Y NO late COST an appointment, can mean the difference between CONCERNS getting CREDIT
· Avoid distractions. Older drivers didn’t have too many things to distract them from the road, but nowadays it’s easy to be distracted whether you’re driving alone on an empty road or sitting in rush hour traffic with dozens of your fellow commuters. That’s because today’s vehicles

· Don’t lane hop. Frequent switching between lanes can make other drivers nervous, increasing the risk of an accident. In addition, sudden or frequent lane changes can make it difficult for drivers to maintain their focus on the road and see more than a few cars ahead of them. Drivers who have been on the road for a long time may feel confident in their abilities to quickly switch between lanes, but fellow motorists may find such shifting distracting and begin to drive erratically as a result. If a fellow driver is driving aggressively, slow down and let them pass or pull over and let them get far away from you before you return to the roadway. Studies have indicated that road rage incidents escalate when drivers make eye contact with one another. Real Estate
Friday the 13th
What to look for in an investment property Historically, the appreciation rate for real estate is very strong. Even when the housing market declines, long-term investors in real estate can rest easy knowing that property values tend to rebound rather quickly, rewarding patient investors in the process.
Many people are familiar with the real estate industry axiom, “location, location, location!” When buying an investment property, location is everything. A great location should outweigh your own personal feelings about the home, especially if you do not intend to live at the property. You will likely define a great location for an investment property differently than you would a property you intend to live in, so don’t let your own desires in a home cloud your judgement when choosing an investment property. Properties in safe neighborhoods that boast good schools and offer easy access to public transportation tend to make great investment properties.
weight. When viewing a property, try to imagine how much it might appeal to prospective tenants. Quirky properties typically do not appeal to as many prospective tenants as properties whose décor are similar to other homes in the area. Though you might find a tenant who prefers properties with unique interiors, a property that appeals to as many prospective tenants as possible often makes for a better investment and a lot less stress when the time comes to find tenants.
Décor
Condition
Looking at real estate as a long-term investment is just one way approach a potential investment property. The following are a few additional considerations prospective investors should contemplate before buying an investment property.
Location
Décor is another thing to consider when looking for an investment property. If you don’t plan to reside in the property, your opinion of the décor should not carry much

Does Friday the 13th freak you out? If so, hold on to your rabbit’s foot extra tight! The following are just a few of the many strange facts about this day of superstition. 1. If Friday the 13th scares you, you may have paraskavedekatriaphobia (also known as friggatriskaidekaphobia). Those are the scientific terms for fear of Friday the 13th. Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13.
The condition of the property also must be considered before buying an investment property. Some investors want a fixer-upper, while others prefer turnkey properties that won’t require any elbow grease. The former type of property likely won’t cost as much as a fully renovated property, but those cost savings might be lost when it’s time to renovate. Find a property that’s in the type of condition you’re comfortable with. If you decide to go with a fixer-upper, learn the cost of your potential projects before submitting an offer.

Real estate makes a great investment, but don’t go overboard when buying an investment property. Before making an offer on a property, research rents in the area and the cost of insurance in that particular neighborhood. You want a property that essentially pays for itself, so make sure the rent you’re likely to collect is enough to cover your monthly costs, including the mortgage on the property, insurance and the costs associated with managing and maintaining the property. Real estate investors often reap great rewards when selling their properties. But it’s still important for potential investors to consider a host of factors before investing in a property.

2. It’s not clear when or why Friday the 13th became associated with bad luck. The association may be biblical, given that the 13th guest at the Last Supper betrayed Jesus. His crucifixion was the next day, apparently a Friday. Or maybe 13 suffers from coming after the morepleasing number 12, which gets to number the months, the days of Christmas and even the eggs in a dozen. There are also 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 labors of Hercules, 12 tribes of Israel and 12 apostles of Jesus. 3. Whatever the reason, fear of 13 has spread far and wide: Hotels and hospitals often skip the 13th floor, and even airports quietly omit gate 13 sometimes. 4. In 2015 we’ll have three Friday the 13ths. They’ll fall in February, March and November. 5. Why does the Friday the 13th superstition stick so firmly in our minds? According to Thomas Gilovich, who chairs the department of psychology at Cornell University, our brains are almost too good at making associations. “If anything bad happens to you on Friday the 13th, the two will be forever associated in your mind, and all those uneventful days in which the 13th fell on a Friday will be ignored,” Gilovich said in a statement. St. Patrick: Separating the truth from legend Few saints are as well-known and widely celebrated as St. Patrick. Known as the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick annually inspires people from around the world to pay homage to his legend, which includes bringing Christianity to Ireland. Revelers don green clothing, participate in parades and decorate with shamrocks and symbols of Irish folklore. Much of what is known about St. Patrick is shrouded in mystery and legend. Patrick has been credited with many miracles, including converting an entire country to Christianity from paganism, and also participated in many spiritual resurrections. While neither Patrick’s birth nor death dates are known with certainty, it is believed he was born in 373 A.D. in an area of Roman Britain, which is now Scotland. Patrick was not Irish, but a British Celt. Young Patrick was careless and not as spiritual as he eventually became. At 16, Patrick was captured by a band of pirates and was sold to a chieftain in an area of Northern Ireland. His labor included tending flocks of sheep. It was during his time of captivity that Patrick found God and decided to devote his life to professing the faith and grace of Christ. He acquired the Irish dialect of the Celtic language in captivity, which would prove essential in his future work. After six years of captivity, Patrick escaped and returned to his homeland, where he immersed himself in the scriptures and fully committed to Celtic Christianity, not the Roman Catholicism that became dominant throughout the Roman Empire. He spent years studying and preparing for life as
a missionary. Through historical documents written in his own hand, Patrick says he was “called to be a servant in Christ to a foreign land.” He began evangelizing, but it wasn’t until around his 30th birthday in 405 A.D. that Patrick set out for Ireland. Patrick established schools and monasteries in Ireland because he believed education and faith were closely entwined. He taught many people, including his most famous student, Columba. While St. Patrick is credited with many miracles, such as driving snakes out of Ireland, some historians believe these tall tales were just metaphors for pushing out paganism. Other miracles included feeding starving sailors with a herd of pigs that appeared when the sailors had faith in God. Some legends even suggest St. Patrick brought animals and people back to life. Many also associate St. Patrick with the shamrock. By using a three-leaf clover, St. Patrick was able to convey the concept of the Holy Trinity to a land of people familiar with the shamrock symbol. The supposed day of St. Patrick’s death, March 17th, was officially recognized as St. Patrick’s Day. In reality, St. Patrick was never officially canonized a saint by the Catholic Church and received the title in name only. At the time of his death, there was no official process for canonization, but Patrick was given the title by popular acclaim and likely with the approval of a bishop. St. Patrick is widely acclaimed and celebrated throughout the world, and his life is even more interesting than many of the legends associated with his name.

Sportsmen’s Guide Embrace an active outdoor lifestyle Blue skies and warm weather entice people to enjoy the great outdoors. For many people, few things are more enjoyable than soaking up some rays and breathing in some fresh air.
Moderate temperatures help make many outdoor activities that much more enjoyable. But even if the weather isn’t perfect, individuals can make the best of the situation and still get out of the house. As the seasons of warm weather return, those itching to get outside can explore these entertaining outdoor activities. Hiking Thousands of miles of hiking trails crisscross North America. These trails include rough and rugged paths blazed across natural areas and long-distance trails that stretch over portions of the country. From the Appalachian Trail in the East to the Bigfoot Trail in the west, hikers and nature enthusiasts have plenty of trails to tread. Hiking is a great outdoor activity in part because it can be enjoyed by people of any age and just about any fitness level. Hikers can work up from relatively short and flat trails to more intense vertical and varied hikes. Local parks, government preserves and rural areas offer plenty of places to walk and hike. When hiking, it’s best to go in pairs. In the event anything occurs, such as an injury, the other hiker will be able to go for help. Hikers also should alert people at home as to their itineraries. Leave a map and plot out where you will be, especially if hikes take you off the beaten path. Remember to pack a portable snack and plenty of water. And when out in the sun, apply sunscreen and reapply as needed. Biking Biking is another outdoor activity ideal for people of all ages and athletic abilities. Once you’ve learned to ride a bicycle, that ability stays with you, whether you ride a bike each day or haven’t taken one for a spin in years. Many towns and cities across the country have be-
come much more bike-friendly in recent years, clearing space for biking paths and lanes even in the busiest metropolitan areas. And mountain bikers still have plenty of trails to traverse as well.
Check that your bike is in good working order and that the chain is freshly oiled. Take your bike to a local cycling shop for a tuneup if necessary. Verify the fit of helmets, especially on children who may have grown since the most recent cycling season. Horseback riding Nature takes on an entirely different look when you are atop a horse. Horseback riding isn’t just for country folk or cowboys, and it can be a great workout as well as a recreational retreat. It takes balance, strong legs and quick reflexes to stay in a saddle. Those interested in horseback riding should visit a stable or riding academy nearby. You likely do not need to own a horse of your own, as riding schools and stables will have animals you can work with. Remember to wear the right clothing, including long pants and boots, for riding. A hat can shade you from the overhead sun, while a helmet is adviseable for people new to the sport or those who want added protection. Always arrive early so that you can familiarize yourself with your horse and have him or her get to know you. Approach the horse from the front left side. Horses are prey animals and can be skittish by nature,
so a firm, calm greeting can reassure the animal. These are just a few of the many outdoor activities people can enjoy when the weather warms up. Try taking exercise routines outdoors, such as running on a path instead of the treadmill. Swimming, walking, gardening, and sports activities are other fun ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

Famous folks who trace heritage back to the Emerald Isle
We’ll Save You A Pot ‘O Gold
St. Patrick’s Day celebrates not only the missionary work of St. Patrick, but also the culture of Ireland. While many people claim Irish heritage come St. Patrick’s Day, these notable celebrities can proudly trace their roots back to the land of shamrocks and leprechauns. Bono: Born Paul David Hewson, Bono is the frontman of the band U2. U2 has earned many worldwide hits, but Bono and his bandmates got their start in and around Dublin and have never forgotten their Irish roots. Alison Doody: This striking Irish actress was born in Dublin and was educated in a convent, where she developed a passion for the arts. Doody’s work on the big screen includes a role in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” Jamie Dornan: A relative unknown in Tinseltown before 2014, Dornan is an Irish actor who became a household name after being cast as Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of the popular novel “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Dornan grew up in the suburbs of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Colin Farrell: Farrell is perhaps one of Ireland’s best-known actors. Born in Dublin, Farrell was inspired to act upon seeing the Steven Spielberg film “E.T.” He has since had an extensive movie career and was recently cast as a lead in the second installment of the popular HBO series “True Detective.” Liam Neeson: An accomplished thespian, Neeson can trace his roots to Northern Ireland. While he’s been prolific in Hollywood, starring in such movies as “Schindler’s List,” “Gangs of New York” and “Batman Begins,” Neeson worked odd jobs before dabbling in acting, even pursuing a career as a teacher. Sinéad O’Connor: This Irish songstress rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut album, “The Lion and the Cobra.” Her take on the Prince song “Nothing Compares 2 U” and its accompanying music video helped make her a household name. O’Connor has had success as a singer and songwriter and continues to write songs for films and collaborate with other artists. Colin O’Donoghue: O’Donoghue was raised in Drogheda, County Louth and attended the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin. His career has been largely split between theater and television work in Ireland and the UK. His Hollywood debut came alongside Anthony Hopkins in “The Rite,” and now O’Donoghue is a series regular on the hit ABC show “Once Upon a Time.”

Did you know? Etiquette with regard to tipping varies depending on the country you’re visiting. In the United States, Americans are accustomed to tipping a minimum of 15 percent, and that figure often rises when service is good. But many countries tip considerably less. In Japan, for example, many people consider it poor etiquette to tip at all, feeling the customer deserves and should expect good service and therefore should not pay extra when such service is delivered. Other countries may not find it rude to tip, but Americans likely won’t have to tip the 15 to 20 percent they are used to tipping at home. Many countries even include a tip in the bill, regardless of the size of the party. To avoid overtipping, foreign travelers should examine their bills before deciding if they will leave tips or not.

What drives home’s value?
It may seem like the size of your home is the be-all and end-all of your home’s value. But there are many other factors that come into play when determining the listing price of a particular home. A new report offers some insights. The Coldwell Banker Home Listing Report, the most extensive home price comparison tool currently available in the country, ranks the average listing price of four-bedroom, two-bathroom homes in nearly 2,000 markets across the country. Analyzing more than 51,000 similar-sized listings, it addresses how much a home in one market would cost if the same home were located somewhere else in the United States. For example, the report reveals that for the price of the average home in Los Altos, Calif., you could purchase 30 similar-sized homes in Cleveland, nine homes in Charlotte, N.C., eight homes in Chicago, five homes in Miami, or two homes in Seattle. But why are there such discrepancies? “It’s amazing how much location impacts a home’s

LOCATION HAS a major impact on the value of a home. value,” says Jessica Edwards, Coldwell Banker Real Estate consumer specialist. “Typically, urban markets are more expensive, while suburban and rural areas tend to be more affordable. “However, many factors contribute to the average price of a home, such as commute time or proximity to the waterfront. The Home Listing Report is a helpful reference, so you can gauge how your area compares to other parts of the country.” Local industry plays a role as well. In the case of Los Altos, which is ranked as the most expensive market in America, the continued success of many tech companies contributes to the boom.
This information can be useful, whether you’re planning to put your property on the market or you’re looking to relocate. For example, if you are scoping out a neighborhood where home prices are on the verge of increasing, area features to look out for include cultural institutions — such as art galleries and performance spaces — as well as such factors as unique architecture and proximity to mass transit and other trendy areas. Edwards also recommends doing some quantitative research, including talking to your Realtor about how fast properties are selling in your area and whether business owners are investing in the neighborhood.
“Buying or selling a home is a huge emotional and financial decision,” says Edwards. “By doing your homework beforehand, you will be able to take some of the uncertainty out of the process.” Remember, while this information is very useful for homeowners and prospective home buyers, it’s by no means a replacement for a professional real estate agent who understands local conditions. For more on the report, or to see how your area stacks up, visit hlr.coldwellbanker.com. For many people, a home is their biggest investment and largest asset. Be savvy and stay informed about the ins and outs of its value. — StatePoint

Windows or water-proofing, painting or patios, siding or security systems. No matter what improvement or remodeling project a homeowner is planning this spring, he or she needs to verify a contractor’s HICPA number. The Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act, passed by the Pennsylvania Legislature in 2008, established a mandatory registration program for contractors working in the state. It provides safeguards for homeowners paying for fix-up projects, prohibits unfair business practices and imposes a criminal penalty for home improvement fraud. An all-too-common fraud in the past involved homeowners putting money down on a project and an unscrupulous contractor who never showed up to do the work. “They skipped town” and there was no way to find them, said Dick Clawson, executive director of the Armstrong-Indiana Homebuilders Association. The HICPA requires all contractors who perform at least $5,000 worth of home improvements annually to register with the state attorney general’s office. Peter Gallagher, a home builder and remodeling contractor in the Poconos who is president of the Pennsylvania Builders Association, said HICPA was enacted at a time when, because of the economy, many people were getting into the home repair and remodeling business. Some had been laid off from their jobs with contractors

Law protects consumers and went out on their own in order to have an income. “Their office was their pickup truck,” Gallagher said of some of the self-employed repairmen. Some had previously only been framers, but now were doing all aspects of remodeling work, again in order to have a job. Some were transient contractors who made repairs — sometimes with shoddy workmanship — and then left town, leaving no way for property owners to get back in touch with them.

And some had no insurance, so there was no way to correct mistakes or substandard work or be reimbursed for damage, Gallagher said. Basil Merenda, chief deputy attorney general in the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General and director of the office’s Consumer Protection Bureau, said the HICPA went into effect in 2009 and the office is ramping up compliance and enforcement.
Among other things, HICPA requires contractors to maintain at least $50,000 insurance and to make agreements with homeowners through standard contracts rather than just a handshake. HICPA also requires contractors to notify the state within 30 days of significant changes in his or her status, and to list their registration information on their contracts, on their vehicles and in their advertising.

‘15 trends: Tech modern styling of Home Builders’ Show, and the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show. The mega event also included the International Window Coverings Expo and The International Surface Event. The big takeaway? The economy is in recovery — at least in the building and housing industries. The shows were packed, energy was electrifying and spirits were up. Among the big trends: Contemporary styling and high-tech

Law protects consumers Continued from page 24 There are now about 65,000 contractors and builders in the state registered under the HICPA, according to Merenda. Warren Peter, owner of Warren Peter Construction Inc., in White Township, and former president of the PBA, played a role in amending the act. Peter testified before Pennsylvania House representatives that a “time and materials” clause was needed in the act that allows contractors to go up to 10 percent above the estimated cost of a project without notifying property owners if unforeseen complications arise in a remodeling or construction project. For example, Peter said, a home improvement crew remodeling a bathroom might discover that an undetected leak has rotted the floor under the tub. Or while replacing a roof, workers might find an infestation of ants that requires the services of an exterminator. Peter said that many times the homeowners are both away when a contractor discovers such complications, and the clause allows work to proceed instead of sending a crew home in the middle of a day. Contractors and remodelers are required to pay a $50 fee every other year to register with the Office of Attorney General. Unfortunately, in Gallagher’s opinion, that fee money is not used for enforcement of the HICPA but rather goes into the state’s general fund.

Tips on selecting contractor Dick Clawson, executive director of the Armstrong-Indiana Homebuilders Association, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office have these tips for homeowners when selecting a contractor to make repairs or improvements: • Thoroughly check the contractor’s references. • Resist accepting an offer from an unknown contractor who shows up and wants to do a project at a low cost because his crew has material left from a job “down the street.” • Obtain more than one bid for the job. • Help contractors give estimates that truly compare “apples to apples” by using a spec sheet. • Check for complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau. • Review the information on home improvement fraud, what must be included in a home improvement contract and contractor registration information on the attorney general’s website, www.attorneygeneral.gov. Homeowners are reminded on the website that registration under HICPA is not an endorsement of a contractor’s honesty or his or her workmanship. — Randy Wells

2015 has the potential to be a good year for home and remodeling businesses. According to Jim McCombs, the 2015 president of the Indiana-Armstrong Builders Association, the improving economy is helpful for businesses that are association members. “The economy has definitely picked up some and seen an increase in business,” McCombs said. McCombs started his term as president of the association in January and will serve in the role through the end of the year. McCombs is in his 20th year of business with his company, Jim McCombs Building and Remodeling, based in Clymer. His company provides a variety of home services, but he said that its specialties are windows and doors. “We do a lot of (those),” McCombs said. “We do work inside and outside — bathrooms, kitchens, decks — basically anything except for roofs.” Although 2014 was not a particularly strong year, business has remained steady, he said. Workers from his company are currently working on remodeling the kitchen of Aging SerContinued on page 30

LED lighting grows in popularity Continued from page 27 ing, according to Allshouse. “You’re looking at the same light output, but a considerable reduction in wattage,” he explained. All of these new efficiencies inevitably meant higher costs, but the prices are beginning to drop even as engineers continue to work on making LED bulbs as efficient as possible. Allshouse, who has been in the electric business for 35 years, said buyers now are paying the higher price for LED bulbs, but in the long run getting more for their money from the efficiency of saving energy while maintaining the same lighting. He notices more and more people are beginning to use LED lighting in their homes. LED lights are generally 2? to three times more expensive than incandescent lighting, according to Allshouse, but not only are they more efficient, they also have a lifespan of about 10,000 hours, compared to the incandescent bulb’s 750-hour time frame. “What they are doing is making them better,” said Allshouse, who predicts the price will continue to decrease, then stabilize. “The cost is going to eventually level out.” With LEDs saving more energy, having a longer lifespan and maintaining a strong lumen output, Allshouse predicts that they will eventually knock out incandescent bulbs and other lesser-used lighting options for the majority. “LED is going to eventually be the force lighting source,” he said.

Business picking up, McCombs says
PA2526
Continued from page 28 vices Inc. along Oak Street in Indiana. “This past year was not as good of a year as it has been in the past, but it’s picking up,” he said. McCombs said his company uses only major name-brand building materials. “I will never use anything on a customer’s house that I would not want to use on my own house,” he said. According to its website, the company offers free estimates to potential customers and is fully insured. “We’ve been in business for 20 years and we’ve never had any problems with customers,” McCombs said. He said quality is a main priority for him and his team — no matter the schedule. “If I have to go that extra mile, even if I don’t get paid for it, I’m going to do it,” he said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to do a good job.” McCombs has been a member of the builders association for five years. His initial draw to the association was the chance to make new relationships and learn new things. The group is a trade association established nationally in 1942 that serves members of the housing industry and helps promote policies that make housing a national priority. Members of the association have an active role in improving their communities, in the county and throughout the nation. “Meeting new people is a benefit,” McCombs said. “(In addition, there are) benefits as far as learning about building codes.”

(MS) - With home prices on the rise, finishing a basement is the latest trend in real estate. More and more homeowners are enjoying the perks of additional living space, a reduction in heating and cooling costs, a healthier home, and, if done right, a more desirable home when selling. A finished basement can be used for virtually anything and may offer multipurpose spaces the entire family can enjoy. Common uses include additional storage or a media room, craft room, guest suite, workshop, or gym. A little extra room can give a growing family space to breathe and provide convenience for everyday life. An unfinished basement can be a source of energy loss. By finishing your basement, you can expect to see savings on your heating and cooling costs. Industry experts recommend finishing the space with the proper framing, insulation and vapor barrier to guarantee a cozy and inviting space. Insulation plays a key role in the comfort of your newly remodeled space and although its hidden within your walls, insulation will make sure your space stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Retailers suggest using a stone wool insulation, such as ROXUL. This recommendation is also fire and water repellent and is resistant to mold, mildew, rot and bacterial growth - making your space healthy and safe. An added benefit to expanding downstairs with a finished basement is the instant marketability. Many buyers now demand a well-finished basement to give them extra space. Although you may not immediately recoup the financial costs prior to selling, you will stand out among the rest.

How to soundproof your home What’s the first step in sound proofing your home? Finding which rooms have the least amount of sound resistance. To do this, make sure everyone is out of the house, unplug all electronics and close all doors and windows. Take a quick walk through your house and pause for a few moments in each room to evaluate which ones are the noisiest. Now consider if you’re installing a media room or teenage recreational room where volumes will be blasting on TV’s and stereos. With this information, you should have a good idea of where you need to soundproof and create barriers against noise. Here are some tips to help you achieve the optimal result of peace and quiet: · Plant trees and hedges along the exterior of your home, perhaps along a fence. Not only do trees and hedges help with
the environment and provide a good amount of privacy, they also slow down the travel of noise from the neighborhood into your home. · Insulate your walls and ceilings. Better insulation in your interiors and exteriors won’t just drive away excess noise, it will also reduce your heating and cooling bills during the hot and cold months. For the best sound proofing and easy installation quality, a professional-grade product by ROXUL called Safe’n’Sound is very popular. · Seal up all cracks and holes around windows and doors, and add double glazed windows to your current glass panes. Once you’ve selected the best soundproofing method, implement it and enjoy the bliss of silence throughout your home.

Enjoy a jam session or watch an intense sports game with the boys without disturbing the rest of your house. Soundproofing your man cave will ensure that the noise of male bonding, deep voices, loud music and cheering doesn’t disturb the entire household. A simple solution to controlling noise is acoustic insulation. A mineral wool product, such as ROXUL Safe ‘n’ Sound, offers sound absorbing qualities that will let you crank up your subwoofer and cheer and jump around when your favorite team scores. Installing mineral wool insulation on the interior walls of your man cave or media room will control sound, delivering a place you can call your own sanctuary to hang out with the boys.

Dietary recommendations change for people age 50 and older.
Friendly fats
People over age 50 should increase their intake of unsaturated fats and reduce consumption of saturated fats. Nutrient-rich unsaturated fats can guard against heart conditions, protect against stroke, keep skin supple, and even help men and women maintain good neurological health. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in nuts, olives, seeds, and fatty fishes.
Increase protein
According to Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as they age, men and women need more protein in their diets to maintain their muscle mass. The amount of protein needed at a younger age no longer may be adequate. Look for lean sources of protein from fish and poultry. Beans are also a lowfat source of protein that can help fulfill daily protein requirements.
More fiber
Eating more fiber can help with digestive and intestinal problems, such as constipation. Constipation can occur when fiber intake is not enough, coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle. The best way to get fiber is through
diet. Leave the skins on fruit and vegetables and choose whole fruits over juices. Wholegrain breads and cereals also are good sources of fiber. Dry beans and lentils can add a fiber boost. Always increase fiber slowly to determine your tolerance.
Fewer calories
The National Institute on Aging says women over the age of 50 need between 1,600 and 2,000 calories, depending on how physically active they are. Men need between 2,000 and 2,400 calories per day. With each passing year there is a decrease in the energy required to maintain body weight, so caloric intake should be adjusted accordingly.
NEW Z Series wireless hearing aids are designed to: Help you hear and understand conversations better in noisy environments like restaurants Make loud sounds more comfortable while boosting soft sounds Stream TV, phone calls and more, directly to your Z Series hearing aids
More water
As a person ages, his or her body may not signal it is thirsty as well as it once did, so it’s possible that you may not recognize when you are thirsty or dehydrated. The Mayo Clinic recommends around nine to 10 cups of beverages per day to remain hydrated. Eating healthy and changing one’s diet is important as a person ages, as dietary needs at age 50 may be quite different from what they were at age 30.

Did you know? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiffness, swelling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. While psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people between the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slowly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis will not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those who have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

How a Healthy Diet Helps You and the Environment The right dietary choices can not only improve your health but the environment as well. But urbanization and increasingly busy schedules force many people to seek the most convenient, and not necessarily the healthiest, foods. The growing reliance on processed foods may be hurting humans and the planet they call home. Processed foods tend to be loaded with starches and preservatives, increasing consumers’ risk of diabetes and being obese. In addition, many prepackaged foods are shipped from faraway processing plants, and vast amounts of fuel must be consumed for products to get from those plants to local grocery stores. But subtle shifts in dietary habits and trends can decrease mortality rates and reduce global greenhouse gas emissions resulting from food production. Adopting alternative diets that feature a higher ratio of fish, whole grains and locally grown produce can greatly reduce an individual’s carbon footprint. The “New Nordic Diet” is one example of a growing dietary trend that has the potential to improve the health of humans and the environment. So says Henrik Saxe, an associate professor who specializes in sustainability at Copenhagen University. Researchers found a reduction in greenhouse gases of at least 6 percent with the New Nordic Diet, as compared to typical diets in Denmark. The following are a few ways average men and women can eat to promote their own health while simultaneously protecting the environment. · Adopt climate-friendly eating habits that rely on more domestic, in-season foods. · Cut down on meat consumption. · Eat organic foods as much as possible. · Avoid seafood harvested from fish farms which can negatively impact your own health and marine life. · Grow your own fruits and vegetables. · Shop at local markets that support nearby farmsINDIANA and farmer’s PROUDLY SERVING markets. · Purchase products with the least amount of packaging.

Rebounding from a late start to retirement savings Some people do not have the ability to begin saving for retirement early on. Others may have brushed retirement savings aside for so long that they are now worried that it’s too late to begin socking away money for retirement. While it’s best to start saving for retirement as early as possible, the good news is that it’s never too late to start planning for retirement. If your 40th birthday has long passed and you’re finally thinking ahead to retirement, consider these catch-up strategies. · Research tax-advantageous retirement savings plans. A financial planner can point you in the right direction, or consult with your employer about employee programs. Deposit money into a 401(k) or 403(b) plan or another retirement vehicle. Jump on any opportunities when your employer matches invested funds. Investigate an IRA and find out if there are any government incentives. Depending on your age, you may be able to deposit more money into such accounts than other investors. · Cut back on expenses. Cutting back on unnecessary expenses is a great way to save more money for retirement. Figure out where you can save some money you can then allocate to retirement savings. Maybe you can reduce insurance coverage on an older car or raise your deductible? Downsize cable packages or skip that costly cup of coffee on the way to work. Perhaps it’s time to look for a smaller, less expensive home or a compact car instead of an SUV. Any money saved now will
benefit you when the time comes time to bid farewell to the workforce. · Delay your retirement. Many people who retire find themselves bored and looking for ways to fill their time, and as a result more and more people are delaying their retirement, which also gives them more time to save for that day when they do call it quits. If you want to work less, discuss and negotiate a phased retirement with your bosses that allows you to stick with your employer but gradually work fewer hours until you retire completely. You may be able to work part-time for several years and retire when you’re most comfortable. · Consider more aggressive funds. Even if you are 50 you still have a few decades before retirement, which leaves lots of time to grow your retirement savings. But you may want to consider more aggressive funds that can help you catch up more quickly than less aggressive investments. Just know that aggressive funds may also leave you susceptible to substantial losses. · Don’t amass debt. If you’re saving for retirement but only paying minimum balances on your credit cards, then you’re not really saving. Pay down credit card debt before you begin to set aside money for retirement. Delaying retirement planning may mean you have to work a little harder to build up a solid reserve. But by following some financial tips and persevering, you can still enjoy retirement with security.
