Working parents tend to have hectic schedules, and those responsibilities often impede on the time moms and dads get to spend with their families. Many parents strive to make more time for their families, and doing so can prove a greater PARENTS can invite youngsters to join reward than any prothem as they prepare meals in an attempt motions or bonuses to increase family time. earned at the office. For those parents whose efforts to achieve better work-life balances remain works in progress, the following are a few ways to free up more time for those people who matter the most to you. · Stop working. Once you leave the office for the day, resist the temptation to pick up your smartphone and check your email or listen to your voicemail messages. Working parents who want to make the most of the time they have with their children should ignore their smartphones during dinner or the time they spend hanging out with their kids or helping them do their homework. You can always sneak a peek at your emails when the kids go to bed. · Shake things up. If your list of responsibilities is truly taking time away from your family, don’t be afraid to shake up your routine. For example, instead of cooking dinner alone, involve the kids so you can get some extra time in with them. If you like to go on a nightly jog around the neighborhood, let the kids accompany you on their bicycles so you can still get your exercise without having to sacrifice time spent with your children. · Propose changes at work. Work is one of the biggest consumers of parents’ time. Parents who feel their work schedules are inefficient or in need of some change should try to think of ways to approach those inefficiencies so they aren’t having such adverse effects on family time. Business travel was once a reality of life for many working professionals, but nowadays technology, such as video conference calls, can let working moms and dads stay closer to home without sacrificing their productivity. · Move closer to the office. Though this might be a drastic change, moving closer to the office might free up more time for parents to spend with their families than any other potential change they can make. Parents who feel their commutes are greatly diminishing the time they get to spend with their families may want to consider moving closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in traffic and more time with their families. Many parents are determined to spend more time with their families, and those willing to make a few adjustments can find that goal is not as difficult as it seems.

Bible Fact

The Bible was written over a 1600 year period by approximately 40 men. Most of these men never met eachother... yet their writings agree and are concise in detail. The time of the writing was from 1500 BC to AD 100.

Sudoku

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Spring showers certainly may bring flower laters on, but they also contribute to challenging driving conditions. Early spring weather can be fickle, vacillating between dry, wet and even icy conditions. Drivers need to remain on their toes to safely traverse roadways near and far. Wet roadways and poor driving conditions contribute to thousands of road accidents each and every year. As roads get wet, oil and other substances rise to the surface of the pavement, which can quickly become slippery and compromise the traction offered by tires. According to the United States Department of Transportation, there are around 707,000 automobile crashes each year due to rain. Heavy rains also may lead to puddles, which can obscure hazards on the roadway. Cars may stall out in puddles or hydroplane, which occurs when cars coast along the surface of the water. Puddles also can be splashed by oncoming cars, leading to visibility issues. It is in every driver’s best interest to use caution when driving on wet roads. The following tips can help prevent accidents, injuries and even fatalities during the rainy season. · Slow down. Drivers should drive slower when roads are wet and when rain compromises visibility. It can take up to three times longer to stop on a wet road than a dry one. By slowing down you will be able to stop or veer out of the way of danger. · Leave room. When driving on wet roads, leave more room between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Again, this plays into stopping distance. Tailgating increases your risk of rear-ending a vehicle if you cannot stop in time on a wet roadway. · Stay alert. It can be easy to be lulled into complacency while driving. But staying alert and conscious of every detail going on around you can reduce your risk of accident when driving in less than ideal conditions. · Skip cruise control. As a driver, you want to remain in control of acceleration and speed, rather than leaving it up to the cruise control system. If you begin to hydroplane on cruise control, the car may actually speed up. · Use your headlights. Headlights can light up the road in front of you, helping illuminate potential hazards. Lights on a car also make your vehicle more visible to others on the road. Always turn on the headlights in inclement weather. · Avoid jerky movements. Keep a steady pace and the vehicle in control. Jerking the wheel or accelerating and braking in a erratic fashion can cause the vehicle to spin out or skid on wet roads. · Check your tires. Inspect your tires for tread wear and air pressure. Tires should be rotated as part of routine maintenance. Poorly performing tires are a significant safety risk. If you live in an area known for a lot of rain, invest in tires designed for wet road conditions. Don’t let wet weather get the best of you. Slow down, stay visible and be on the alert.

Learning car dealership terminology Many industries have their own lexicon, and the automotive industry is no exception. Prospective car buyers may visit a dealership and hear an array of unfamiliar terminology. Familiarizing yourself with such lingo can make it easier to leave a dealership feeling like you got the best deal possible. Such familiarity also makes it easier to understand your surroundings and what’s going on as you work to get the car you want for the price you want. The following are a handful of terms you might hear at the dealership when you decide to upgrade to a new vehicle. Babysitter: Co-signer or co-buyer on a contract, or term used when the primary buyer needs help to make a decision or buy. Be back: Prospective buyer who promises to return after re-

searching other vehicles or deals. Bumping: Raising the customer’s offer for a car. Buy rate: The interest rate that banks or financing institutions will charge on all contracts being financed. It is a “secret” number between the lender and the dealer that is the real amount of the interest rate that the loan starts out at before the dealer increases it for its own extra profit. Candy store: A dealership with a lot of inventory to check out. Chisler: A buyer who works the salesman down to the best

possible deal on the vehicle. Closer: Salesperson whose job it is to “close” the deal with customers who are hesitating. Demo: A test-drive of the car. F and I: Refers to the sales department that arranges for financing with a lender. It stands for finance and insurance. continued on page 10

Just for laughs A car was driving down the street when all of a sudden it started swerving. The car was going back and forth till someone with a cell phone called the police. A police officer pulled the car over. A blonde rolls down the window and says, “Officer, I’m so glad you are here. I saw a tree in the road, then I saw another. So I had to swerve to keep from hitting it!” The officer looks at her, then says, “Ma’am, that’s your air freshener.”

I Was Complimented on my drIving today, someone left a note on my windshield that said “Parking Fine”.

Protein an ally to women looking to get healthy While protein is used to build and repair muscle tissue and promote neurological function, it also can encourage fat loss, deliver essential nutrients and improve metabolic activity. Because protein can increase satiety better than some other foods, it also can be a good way to curb cravings and help cut out some extra calories. Although protein is an important component of a nutritious diet, some women do not consume enough of it or even know what “enough protein” entails. According to a recent survey by Luna, 50 percent of women ages 18 to 50 do not know if they’re getting enough protein.

How much protein?

How much protein a woman needs isn’t an exact science. The Institute of Medicine and the United States Department of Agriculture recommends that all men and women over the age of 19 consume .8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, but that number can be customized depending on how active a person is. Because high-protein foods also may be high in saturated fats, it’s best to choose protein sources that include essential amino acids and are relatively low in saturated fat. Such sources include fish, roasted chicken and soybeans.

Many people consume protein to build muscle. By consuming adequate amounts of protein, women can retain lean muscle mass and keep their bodies strong. Physically active women may need more protein than women who are sedentary to help fuel the recovery of muscles after their workouts. Muscles actually are built outside of the gym. During physical activity, muscle tissue is torn and broken down. Amino acids in protein will help repair muscle tissue to grow back stronger.

Fends off hunger pangs

Protein takes longer to break down in the body and digest compared to carbohydrates,

PROTEIN IS AN important component in health and something women need to fuel healthy bodies. which usually produce quick punches of energy. A longer digestion window means you can feel fuller for a longer amount of time and steer clear of excess calories. Slower digestion may also help stabilize energy levels.

Protein helps burn fat

According to BodyBuilding.com, protein has the highest thermic effect of food, or TEF, which is the amount of calories it takes your body to process and utilize a nutrient. This can mean your body actually uses a quarter to 35 percent of the caloric energy from consumed protein just to digest it. Those who eat more protein during the day may see faster weight loss. Furthermore, excess protein consumed will not cause women to bulk up, as the body will excrete whatever it does not use as fuel.

Protein supplements

Much of the protein a healthy body needs can be gotten through food. However, some women like protein shakes to replace a meal or provide extra fuel after a workout. Two of the most readily available protein powders include whey concentrate, a fast-absorbing pre- and post-workout protein source, and casein, a protein that can be used as a meal or right before bed because it can take five to seven hours to fully breakdown in the body. Protein can be the missing component in a woman’s healthy diet and fitness plan.

HEALTH FACTS: » One out of three Americans has either diabetes or pre-diabetes.

» There are over two million serious Adverse Drug Reactions every year with 100,000 deaths yearly.

Did you know?

Cats and vegetarian diets may not make an ideal match. Cats have a greater need for protein than their canine counterparts, and while protein can be found in a vegetarian diet, different proteins contain different levels of amino acids cats need to survive. Taurine is an amino acid found in meat and fish that cats cannot synthesize, meaning they must get it through their diets. If cats’ diets don’t include sufficient taurine, the resulting deficiency can lead to heart disease and other potentially serious health problems. Cats also need more protein than dogs, making vegetarian diets for felines an especially risky proposition and one many veterinarians advise against.

Putting the Spotlight on Dr. Yeshwant Phadke by Elaine Kozak | ekozak@indianagazette.net

Dr. Yeshwant Phadke, M.D.;F.A.C.S.

INDIANA – With the warmer months upon us, a visit to Dr. Yeshwant Phadke’s office is just the thing to regain beautiful, healthy legs. Dr. Yeshwant Phadke is a general surgeon who has been a certified by the American Board of Surgery since 1980. Dr. Phadke is also certified by the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine and is a member of the American College of Phlebology (treatment of Venous Disease). Dr. Phadke, one of only 600 surgeons specializing in this category in the U.S., has been serving Indiana County and the surrounding areas since 1987. Dr. Phadke performs the treatments in his office (assisted by a team of certified ultrasound technologists, surgical technicians and friendly and caring office staff) in providing comprehensive care of venous disease. “The technologies and treatments are evolving continuously. Most treatments are office based, using local anesthesia and covered by most insurance companies. Patients return to work the same or next day. There is minimal pain with excellent results at minimal risk. ” stated Dr. Phadke. “We provide high quality, friendly care with excellent outcomes and encourage yearly checkups to ensure the patient’s ongoing health.” added Dr. Phadke. Services offered include vein closure using radiofrequency and laser energy, sclerotherapy (vein injections) and phlebectomy with minimally invasive techniques. Venous insufficiency (improper blood flowing in veins) is progressive and commonly caused by heredity, prolonged standing or multiple pregnancies. It affects both women and men. Since 2001 minimally invasive treatments have been available. Since 2005 Dr. Phadke has been performing the VNUS closure. During the procedure, a catheter is inserted into the patient’s leg. The energy is then sent into the body to seal the veins. People who undergo closure will be under a local anesthesia with the entire procedure taking less than an hour. Most often, the procedure is pain-free and provides quick relief from varicose veins. In 2014 laser closure was added. Over 2000 procedures have been performed in Dr. Phadke’s office since 2007. Most insurance plans are accepted and free screening examinations are offered.

DID YOU KNOW? In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Department of Education released the first federal uniform definition of bullying to help clarify instances of bullying from other occurrences. At the crux of the definition is unwanted aggressive behavior, observed or perceived power imbalance and repetition of behaviors or high likelihood of repetition. Bullying modes and types can vary. The two modes of bullying include direct (bullying

that occurs in the presence of a targeted youth) and indirect (bullying not directly communicated to a targeted youth such as spreading rumors). In addition to these two modes, the four types of bullying are included in broad categories in the current definition: physical, verbal, relational (efforts to harm the reputation or relationships of the targeted youth), and damage to property. Bullying may constitute criminal behavior and be punishable by law. According to the National Center for Education Statistics,28 percent of American students in grades six to 12 have experienced bullying.

Watering tips to produce healthy lawns Summer is a season for landscaping, and homeowners who live in regions that get especially hot in the summertime often worry that their lawns won’t make it through the dog days of summer looking lush. But lawns don’t have to succumb to the sizzling summer sun. Oftentimes, the right watering strategies can help homeowners nurse their lawns through the hottest months of the year, ensuring the lawns make it to autumn looking as green as they did back at the height of spring. · Reconsider when you’re watering. Come summertime, homeowners may want a glass of water at high noon, when temperatures seem to be at their hottest. But you and your lawn are different, so the best time to satiate your thirst is not necessarily the best time to water your lawn. Watering in the middle of the day is often ineffective, as water tends to evaporate quickly in the afternoons when temperatures are peaking. Nighttime watering can contribute to the growth of fungus, which can create an entirely new set of headaches for homeowners. Morning watering sessions tend to be most effective during the summertime, as temperatures tend to be cooler in the morning, leading to less evaporation. Less evaporation means all that watering isn’t going to waste. · Reconsider your sprinkler. If you can’t afford an inground irrigation system, which many landscaping pro-

POORLY PLACED SPRINKLERS that shoot water out onto driveways and other surfaces that do not need water can rob a lawn of water it desperately needs when temperatures climb in the summertime.

fessionals feel is the most effective and efficient way to water a lawn, then you likely will rely on a sprinkler to keep your lawn looking lush through the summer months. When choosing a sprinkler, look for one that shoots water out horizontally as opposed to vertically. A vertical sprinkler system is more vulnerable to wind and evaporation than one that shoots water out horizontally, so make sure your sprinkler system is sending water into your lawn and not into summer breezes. · Avoid overwatering. How much water your lawn needs in the summertime depends on a host of factors, including where you live and how often rain falls in that region. Overwatering can promote the growth of fungus and adversely affect your lawn’s root system, making it difficult for roots to grow deep. Speak with a local landscaping professional to determine how often you should water your lawn each week. · Strategically position your sprinklers. When choosing where to

put down your sprinklers, hook them up to your hose, turn them on and then watch to see where the water is going. Areas that exposed to sun are most in need of water, so make sure the bulk of your water isn’t going to shaded areas beneath trees. In addition, make sure you aren’t wasting water on sidewalks, patios and driveways. Sprinklers should be positioned so none of the water they’re shooting out is landing on surfaces that don’t need water. It sounds simple, but too often homeowners drop their sprinklers down, turn them on and then walk away without waiting to see where the water is landing. Position sprinklers or adjust sprinkler heads so all the water is landing on your lawn.

Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your prop erty provide the best growing conditions.

Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed

with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

Extracurricular and summer season sports leagues keep thousands of children occupied. Youth sports promote physical fitness and teamwork while helping children acquaint themselves with sportsmanship and camaraderie. The Journal of Sports Medicine says three out of four American families with school-aged children have at least one child playing an organized sport. While many kids play just for recreation, others play competitively. Sports are meant to be sources of enjoyment for children, but parental pressure and poor adult behavior on the sidelines can make kids reluctant to compete. Parents who behave poorly may inadvertently pass on bad habits to their children or cause kids to prematurely abandon their athletic pursuits. The following are a few tips for parents who want to encourage their kids’ passions for sports in positive ways. · Show respect for coaches and officials. Parents should not act like they are the final authority on calls or how team members should play. Respect should always be shown to coaches and referees. · Let your child have fun regardless of his or her performance. Too often parents get swept up in how their children are performing when the goal for young athletes should be to enjoy themselves. Resist the urge to focus on performance and focus instead of whether or not your child is having fun. · Recognize college scholarships may not be in the cards. Although some children are destined for athletic greatness, many will not play sports after high school. Pressuring older children to improve their performance in the hopes of landing college scholarships can make the little time they do have to play their favorite sports less enjoyable. · Take cues from the child. Children are often great indicators of parental behavior at sporting events. Parents whose children seem unenthusiastic about mom and dad attending their sporting events may be trying to tell you they don’t appreciate your behavior at the games. · Provide constructive criticism. Early coaching and practice with CANVAS SHOP: Boat Covers, Tops, Pontoons, Encloparents can give kids a leg up on the competition. But keep your sures, All kinds canvas work advice constructive. Parents who become pushy or force constant and repairs. Watch for signs practices can make sports unenjoyable. in Trade City on 210 North. · Place emphasis on fun and learning skills. Find out what the Melvin A, Miller, 1500 kids hope to accomplish by playing sports and help them to achieve Coolspring Rd. Smicksburg, those goals. Focus on being supportive rather than emphasizing PA 16256 winning, as doing so can help children view sports participation in a more positive light. From page 7.
