Home Show runs through weekend By ELLEN MATIS

ematis@indianagazette.net

The Indiana-Armstrong Builders Association’s annual Home Show offers community residents a chance to talk with area contractors, homebuilders, remodelers and other home-related service professionals before this year’s construction season gets fully underway. This year’s show, at the S&T Bank Arena in White Township this weekend, will have 135 booths and 101 exhibitors. The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 and children under the age of 16 are admitted free if they are accompanied by an adult. “(The Home Show is an opportunity) to meet with remodelers, homebuilders — anything to do with homes … to do repairs, remodeling, painting, landscaping,” said Dick Clawson, executive director of the Indiana-Armstrong Builders Association. “Anyone that has something to do with home construction and remodeling is going to be there.” In addition, there will be a realtor at the

event for people considering a home purchase in the future. According to Clawson, the annual event gives area residents a chance to meet contractors that they otherwise would only speak with over the phone. “It’s an opportunity to meet one-onone with a lot of the major players in the county and see if your personality clicks with them,” he said. “You can see if you like them and see what kind of work they do and the quality of the materials they use.” National chains Sears and Lowe’s also are a part of this year’s exhibition. Sears will feature mainly appliances at their booth. Other than those two chains, every booth and exhibitor at the show will be a local business. Clawson said the first show 36 years ago had 65 exhibitors. “Probably 50 of those same exhibitors keep coming back.” Typically 3,200 to 3,500 people attend the event, he said. On Friday and Sunday, the builders association gives away $300 in Home Show Bucks as a door prize to a ticket holder, and on Saturday, $300 in Home Show Bucks are given away every three hours.

A random survey of area banks found there is no shortage of mortgage money available this spring for new home construction, remodeling or repairs. Lending specialists at several banks described interest rates on home construction and home improvement loans as “favorable” and similar to those at this time last spring.

However, according to at least one loan specialist, interest rates are expected to rise by this fall and could be 0.5 percent to 0.75 percent higher next spring than they are now. Visitors to the Home Show can talk with bank representatives about loan specials some banks are offering during March. — Randy Wells

Tips on selecting contractor

TOM PEEL/Gazette

LIKE OTHER contractors covered by the state Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act, Warren Peter Construction Inc., of Indiana, displays its registration number on vehicles.

Law protects consumers Continued from Page 3 There are now about 65,000 contractors and builders in the state registered under the HICPA, according to Merenda. Warren Peter, owner of Warren Peter Construction Inc., in White Township, and former president of the PBA, played a role in amending the act. Peter testified before Pennsylvania House representatives that a “time and materials” clause was needed in the act that allows contractors to go up to 10 percent above the estimated cost of a project without notifying property owners if unforeseen complications arise in a remodeling or construction project. For example, Peter said, a home improvement crew remodeling a bathroom might

discover that an undetected leak has rotted the floor under the tub. Or while replacing a roof, workers might find an infestation of ants that requires the services of an exterminator. Peter said that many times the homeowners are both away when a contractor discovers such complications, and the clause allows work to proceed instead of sending a crew home in the middle of a day. Contractors and remodelers are required to pay a $50 fee every other year to register with the Office of Attorney General. Unfortunately, in Gallagher’s opinion, that fee money is not used for enforcement of the HICPA but rather goes into the state’s general fund.

Dick Clawson, executive director of the Armstrong-Indiana Homebuilders Association, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office have these tips for homeowners when selecting a contractor to make repairs or improvements: • Thoroughly check the contractor’s references. • Resist accepting an offer from an unknown contractor who shows up and wants to do a project at a low cost because his crew has material left from a job “down the street.” • Obtain more DICK than one bid for CLAWSON the job. • Help contractors give estimates that truly compare “apples to apples” by using a spec sheet. • Check for complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau. • Review the information on home improvement fraud, what must be included in a home improvement contract and contractor registration information on the attorney general’s website, www.at torneygeneral.gov. Homeowners are reminded on the website that registration under HICPA is not an endorsement of a contractor’s honesty or his or her workmanship. — Randy Wells

Business picking up, McCombs says By ELLEN MATIS

ematis@indianagazette.net

2015 has the potential to be a good year for home and remodeling businesses. According to Jim McCombs, the 2015 president of the Indiana-Armstrong Builders Association, the improving economy is helpful for businesses that are association members. “The economy has definitely picked up some and seen an increase in business,” McCombs said. McCombs started his term as president of the association in January and will serve in the role through the end of the year. McCombs is in his 20th year of business with his company, Jim McCombs Building and Remodeling, based in Clymer. His company provides a variety of home services, but he said that its specialties are windows and doors. “We do a lot of (those),” Mc-

“I WILL NEVER use anything on a customer’s house that I would not want to use on my own house.” Jim McCombs,

builder and remodeler and 2015 president of the IndianaArmstrong Builders Association Combs said. “We do work inside and outside — bathrooms, kitchens, decks — basically anything except for roofs.” Although 2014 was not a particularly strong year, business has remained steady, he said. Workers from his company are currently working on remodeling the kitchen of Aging Services Inc. along Oak Street in Indiana. “This past year was not as good of a year as it has been in the past, but it’s picking up,”

he said. McCombs said his company uses only major name-brand building materials. “I will never use anything on a customer’s house that I would not want to use on my own house,” he said. According to its website, the company offers free estimates to potential customers and is fully insured. “We’ve been in business for 20 years and we’ve never had any problems with customers,” McCombs said.

He said quality is a main priority for him and his team — no matter the schedule. “If I have to go that extra mile, even if I don’t get paid for it, I’m going to do it,” he said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to do a good job.” McCombs has been a member of the builders association for five years. His initial draw to the association was the chance to make new relationships and learn new things. The group is a trade association established nationally in 1942 that serves members of the housing industry and helps promote policies that make housing a national priority. Members of the association have an active role in improving their communities, in the county and throughout the nation. “Meeting new people is a benefit,” McCombs said. “(In addition, there are) benefits as far as learning about building codes.”

LED lighting grows in popularity By KAYLA CIOFFO

kcioffo@indianagazette.net

Almost a century and a half after Thomas Edison’s innovations in lighting, there soon may be a new dominant light source succeeding his 19th century incandescent bulb. Dave Allshouse, who works in sales at Hite Electric along Warren Road in White Township, said LED lighting is now progressively replacing the incandescent light bulb. In comparison with incandescent, LED bulbs use less wattage and have a longer lifespan, but still manage to put out the same number of lumens, a measure of lighting, according to Allshouse. “You’re looking at the same light output, but a considerable reduction in wattage, he explained. All of these new efficiencies inevitably meant higher costs, but the prices are beginning to Continued on Page 8

DAVE ALLSHOUSE, of Hite Electric, said he believes LED lighting is progressively supplanting traditional incandescent lightbulbs.

LED lights grow in popularity Continued from Page 7 drop even as engineers continue to work on making LED bulbs as efficient as possible. Allshouse, who has been in the electric business for 35 years, said buyers now are paying the higher price for LED bulbs, but in the long run getting more for their money from the efficiency of saving energy while maintaining the same lighting. He notices more and more people are beginning to use LED lighting in their homes. LED lights are generally 2½ to three times more expensive than incandescent lighting, according to Allshouse, but not only are they more efficient, they also have a lifespan of about 10,000 hours, compared to the incandescent bulb’s 750-hour time frame. “What they are doing is making them better,” said Allshouse, who predicts the price will continue to decrease, then stabilize. “The cost is going to eventually level out.” With LEDs saving more energy, having a longer lifespan and maintaining a strong lumen output, Allshouse predicts that they will eventually knock out incandescent bulbs and other lesser-used lighting options for the majority. “LED is going to eventually be the force lighting source,” he said.

Where to start when preparing for spring

Warmer weather and sunnier days are on their way and many homeowners are itching to begin home improvement projects. If you are one of them, consider these areas of your home when prepping for spring.

WINDOWS AND DOORS From a full window replacement to a simple coat of paint, updating your windows and doors can have a big impact on your home. If your windows felt drafty this winter, it may be time for replacements. Replace your old singlepane windows with energy-efficient double-pane windows. Double-pane windows can help you save on heating and cooling bills; they help keep the temperature in your home consistent year-round and help protect your furniture, carpet and window treatments from the sun’s fading rays. Need to bring some fresh color

into your home but don’t want to paint? Try updating your blinds or shades. From different styles to colorful fabrics, blinds and shades can add a pop of color to your room. Your front door is a major focal point of your home, enhancing your home’s curb appeal. Make a bold statement and improve your home’s energy efficiency with a new ENERGY STAR-certified front door. Consider options with decorative glass accents, and sidelights to add more natural light while maintaining a sense of style and privacy. Looking for something even easier? A new coat of paint to your existing door is a quick and easy way to give your home a fresh, new look.

Blend style, function in bath lighting

Bathroom remodels are one of the most popular home improvement projects and they provide impressive return on investment. While plenty of focus goes into selecting the perfect tile or ideal shower surround, there’s one critical area that too often is overlooked: the lighting. To make the most out of your remodel and ensure a space that is as functional as it is fashionable, it’s important to understand the purpose of different types of lighting and how each influences the style and usefulness of the bathroom. A surprising number of bathrooms have critically poor lighting that not only detracts from their design, but makes it more difficult to do daily tasks. Whether you have a petite powder room or a grand master bath, there are four main types of lighting you should Continued on Page 11

Blend style, function Continued from Page 10 consider: ambient, task, accent and natural.

AMBIENT LIGHTING Ambient lighting is the main source of illumination and is fundamental to a solid bathroom lighting plan. Also known as general lighting, ambient lights are typically installed overhead and provide lighting for safety and overall comfort. Recessed lights, wall-mounted fixtures and small chandeliers have become popular options for bathroom ambient lighting. Many people choose to install dimmers for the main source of lighting so they can adjust the illumination depending on what they are doing; brighter is used for quick showers and softer lighting is used for soaking in the tub.

TASK LIGHTING Task lighting is absolutely necessary for daily grooming activities like putting on makeup and shaving. Typically located by the mirrors, quality task lighting is free of glare

and shadows, and it will never strain the eyes.

ACCENT LIGHTING To add dramatic visual interest and call attention to certain objects in the bathroom, use accent lighting. These types of lights artistically highlight special objects, like paintings, plants, sculptures or architectural detailing. Accent lights are typically smaller and include a shield that allows you to direct the light on the desired object.

NATURAL LIGHTING Due to privacy concerns, many bathrooms do not have any natural light sources. Fortunately, thanks to ambient, task and accent lighting, natural light is not a necessity. But some homeowners like the option of natural light and a skylight can be a simple solution. Skylights allow sunlight in during daylight hours without jeopardizing any privacy, plus they can be installed with shades for optional closure if desired. — Brandpoint

Get an early start on spring chores Continued from Page 8 in damage. Luckily gutter cleaning and downspout repair is fairly low-cost. After all the snow melts, you’ll want to make sure to clean your gutters and clean out any debris that may keep spring rains from flowing freely through your downspouts. Along with replacing damaged gutter or downspout sections, you’ll also want to make sure you have added downspout extenders to ensure water is draining far away from your home’s foundation. Extenders should reach at least five feet into your yard.

AIR CONDITIONING Spring is a great time to start getting your cooling system ready. Often you have to call in the pros for air conditioning work, but things like spraying off any overgrowth or debris, cleaning coils and changing filters are fixes you can easily do on your own. Also, trim back any shrubs that are nearby. Keeping the outdoor unit clean from debris will boost your A/C system’s efficiency. You can keep part of your indoor ductwork clean by removing register covers and wiping clean any of the visible parts. You’ll need to contact a professional for a full duct cleaning.

What drives home’s value?

It may seem like the size of your home is the be-all and end-all of your home’s value. But there are many other factors that come into play when determining the listing price of a particular home. A new report offers some insights. The Coldwell Banker Home Listing Report, the most extensive home price comparison tool currently available in the country, ranks the average listing price of four-bedroom, two-bathroom homes in nearly 2,000 markets across the country. Analyzing more than 51,000 similar-sized listings, it addresses how much a home in one market would cost if the same home were located somewhere else in the United States. For example, the report reveals that for the price of the average home in Los Altos, Calif., you could purchase 30 similar-sized homes in Cleveland, nine homes in Charlotte, N.C., eight homes in Chicago, five homes in Miami, or two homes in Seattle. But why are there such discrepancies? “It’s amazing how much location impacts a home’s

StatePoint

LOCATION HAS a major impact on the value of a home. value,” says Jessica Edwards, Coldwell Banker Real Estate consumer specialist. “Typically, urban markets are more expensive, while suburban and rural areas tend to be more affordable. “However, many factors contribute to the average price of a home, such as commute time or proximity to the waterfront. The Home Listing Report is a helpful reference, so you can gauge how your area compares to other parts of the country.” Local industry plays a role as well. In the case of Los Altos, which is ranked as the most expensive market in America, the continued success of many tech companies contributes to the boom.

This information can be useful, whether you’re planning to put your property on the market or you’re looking to relocate. For example, if you are scoping out a neighborhood where home prices are on the verge of increasing, area features to look out for include cultural institutions — such as art galleries and performance spaces — as well as such factors as unique architecture and proximity to mass transit and other trendy areas. Edwards also recommends doing some quantitative research, including talking to your Realtor about how fast properties are selling in your area and whether business owners are investing in the neighborhood.

“Buying or selling a home is a huge emotional and financial decision,” says Edwards. “By doing your homework beforehand, you will be able to take some of the uncertainty out of the process.” Remember, while this information is very useful for homeowners and prospective home buyers, it’s by no means a replacement for a professional real estate agent who understands local conditions. For more on the report, or to see how your area stacks up, visit hlr.coldwellbanker.com. For many people, a home is their biggest investment and largest asset. Be savvy and stay informed about the ins and outs of its value. — StatePoint

Think back to avocado green kitchen appliances. Did shivers just go down your back or did you get a pang of nostalgia? No doubt, color can evoke a visceral response, whether for interior or exterior decorating, clothes, makeup or cars. It makes a first impression, accentuates attributes and softens flaws, and offers a glimpse into your personality. The colors you choose can also be influenced by many sources — friends and neighbors, magazine photos, designs on TV shows, or by experts who annually select what the next year’s big colors will be in home decor, fashion, and graphic and industrial design. This is where the tale turns cautionary: What’s hot today usually has a short lifespan Continued on Page 17

Avoid fads in picking exterior paint wContinued from Page 15 and is always subject to debate. Take a look at these three examples of the Color of the Year for 2015: • Paint manufacturer Benjamin Moore describes its Guilford Green as “a neutral that’s natural. A silvery green that works with, well, everything. Just a brush, dipped in a can, whooshed on a wall, and a whole lot of happily ever after.” • Rival Sherwin Williams calls its Coral Reef “an uplifting, vivacious hue with floral notes” and “the perfect blend of pink, orange and red.” • Pantone Color Institute describes its Marsala as “a naturally robust and earthy wine red” that would “enrich the mind, body and soul.”

THESE COLORS may be nice, but how much of a good thing would you want in or on your home? Rather than chasing trends, you can be sure you’ll be happy for years to come by following eight simple guidelines on choosing exterior colors. 1. Deciding between bright and cheerful colors or deep, rich earth tones will influence all other decisions. 2. You don’t have to be a color expert,

but you should take a little time to learn how colors work together. (Or find someone who does.) 3. You’ll want to make your home distinctive, but for the sake of your neighbors, you should pick colors that will blend with your surroundings. 4. Make sure your choices in siding and trim don’t clash with materials you are not going to replace, such as roof shingles, brick, stone and tile. 5. The size and lot location of your house matters. Light colors can make a house look bigger and dark colors can make it look smaller. If the house is set back in the lot, a lighter color can also make it look closer to the street. 6. Landscaping will continue to grow and change colors as the seasons change, so trees, shrubs and flowering gardens need to be considered. 7. Use neutral colors to de-emphasize things such as an air conditioning unit or gutters and downspouts, and use contrasting or accent colors to highlight things such as architectural detailing, porch railings, windows and front doors. 8. Computer renderings can give a general idea of what colors will look like, but large swatches (about 2 by 3 feet) give a

truer representation of colors. Take a look at the swatches at different times of day. The colors will look different as the intensity of the sunlight changes. Once you have selected your favorite neutral color palette, consider making it last. No one wants to invest thousands of dollars every few years to keep that paint looking fresh.

MANY WOOD substitutes are now available as painted planks, but — buyer, beware — their finishes degrade just like paint. Better are cladding products that are certified and under warranty to retain their color. Vinyl and other polymeric siding manufacturers incorporate color that won’t chip, pit or peel, giving homeowners peace of mind that they won’t have to paint or repair the finish. Keeping your home’s exterior looking fresh and timely doesn’t have to be challenging. Here are few tips on room painting Ready for a new look in your home, but don’t have a budget for a big remodel? There’s nothing faster or more economical to give your home a quick update than by painting your rooms a new color. A well-planned and executed paint job can make a room look larger or cozier, can accent features or hide flaws, or reflect your own personal flair. Here are some tips to help make your painting project a success.

CHOOSE RIGHT COLOR Go to a paint or home improvement store and get swatches of colors to take home. Select a lot of options, chances are the florescent lights in the store will make the colors look completely different than they will in your home.

See how you like the colors on different walls and in different lighting conditions — early morning sun, midday and nighttime lamplight — to make sure you’re happy with your final choice. Another option is to paint a few colors on your walls. Many companies offer sample sizes in either a selection of popular colors, or in any color they offer. These samples cost much less than a full gallon and give you the opportunity to try them out on the wall before spending a lot of money.

SELECT A FINISH Choose a paint finish depending on how the room or surface will be used: A flat or matte finish helps conceal flaws and absorbs light in well-lit rooms. Continued on Page 19

Here are few tips on room painting Continued from Page 18 Satin or eggshell finishes are a good choice for high-traffic areas such as foyers, family rooms, kitchens and bathrooms because they clean more easily than flat or matte paint. Baseboards, molding and railings look best in a semi-gloss finish, which is a shiny finish that is the easiest to clean and provides a contrast to the walls. Many paint companies also now offer “all-in-one” paints that already contain primer. These enable you to paint over a darker paint color or area that’s been repaired with patching compound without having to apply a coat of primer before the paint.

STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES Here are the basic supplies you’ll need whether you’re painting several rooms or just one: • Brushes and rollers • Paint trays • Painter’s tape • Sheets or tarps to cover furniture

PREPARE THE ROOM Give yourself adequate space to maneuver while you paint and protect your valu-

NAHB photo

CHECK PAINT colors on different walls and in different lighting conditions before making a final choice. able furniture and belongings. Move as much of the room’s contents as you can either out of the room or away from the

walls. Cover whatever is going to stay and the floor, especially where it meets the walls, with old sheets or plastic tarps. Next, remove the switch plates and electrical outlet covers. It’s easier than trying to cover them with painter’s tape and definitely looks better — and is safer — than just painting over them. Don’t forget to repair nail holes, dents or chipped spots with a patching compound. If you have any doubt about your ability to paint a perfectly straight line, or you don’t have a very steady hand, use painter’s tape to protect features you don’t want paint to get on. This could include baseboards, window and door trim, and where the wall meets the ceiling or crown molding. Make sure the tape adheres properly by running a finger or mixing stick along the tape. Clean the walls with a mild detergent solution or wipe them with a damp lintfree cloth to remove cobwebs and dust that will cause blemishes in your paint. Vacuum or dust the room to make sure dust or animal hair doesn’t get in your paint and on your walls. National Association of Home Builders website: www.nahb.org

’15 trends: Tech, modern styling By VICKI PAYNE

The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer

THERMA-TRU DISPLAYED 8-foot entry doors with an expanded glass selection that includes modern leaded glass and textured glass inserts with moldings and bold color options.

Handout/Charlotte Observer/TNS

I was one of more than 125,000 housing industry professionals who packed the Design & Construction Week shows in Las Vegas in January. I logged more miles than I care to recall during my four-day marathon. Still, I only managed to tour the Las Vegas Furniture Show, the National Association of Home Builders’ Show, and the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show. The mega event also included the International Window Coverings Expo and The International Surface Event. The big takeaway? The economy is in recovery — at least in the building and housing industries. The shows were packed, energy was electrifying and spirits were up.

Among the big trends: Contemporary styling and hightech “smart” homes dominated each show. Contemporary design was everywhere. I’ve been watching this trend grow over the past three years. It started with home furnishings, and now the look is dominating the design and construction industries. Clopay displayed the most innovative new garage doors I have seen in decades. The company’s stylish contemporary designs feature glass fronts as well as stainless steel and wood combinations. Clopay also showcased a sleek black door with a special paint formulated to stay cool in direct sun. Interior and exterior doors are going taller, wider and more contemporary. Therma-Tru displayed 8foot entry doors with an expanded glass selection that includes modern leaded glass and textured glass inserts with moldings and bold color options. Glass door walls that fold back for access to outdoor spaces were back again this year. Kitchens and bathrooms are the bling of the home, and this year’s styles were sleek, minimalist and shiny. Glass was the overwhelming cabinet door material in this year’s kitchen displays. You might imagContinued on Page 25

How to find kitchen style that matches personality Continued from Page 24 iron detailing, exposed ceiling beams with brick-style flooring and raisedpanel cabinets in dark wood tones. A granite countertop will really tie the entire look together.

TRADITIONAL Bright, complex and sparkling are the details that exist in a traditional kitchen, and you love how architectural details bring character to the kitchen space. Warm neutral colors with decorative cabinet doors in an antique finish in the kitchen echo your approachable personality.

URBAN INDUSTRIAL The kitchen that best fits your newage swagger is the urban industrial style, complete with a neutral base color accented with pops of color and edgy art. The look is effortless with touches of well-traveled, rustic, modern, bold and

unique. The architecture is open, with brick wall, exposed ducts and pipes or even a chalkboard wall. The furniture is unique and often mismatched, promoting individuality in each piece. Because the look is easy, you prefer open shelves instead of cabinets, and like the look and usefulness of wooden crates for storage. When your personality and kitchen style match, you’ll discover it’s a space you call home. If you’ve let your budget keep you from the kitchen of your dreams, think again. If your space doesn’t quite match your personality perfectly, there are simple, budget-friendly steps you can take to get the style you want. Poggenpohl’s newest kitchen collection, designed by Porsche Design Studio, featured black cabinetry and a clear glass divider similar to an automobile’s windshield. The divider separates the cooking surface from the dining area without visually breaking up the space. Wall-mounted cabinetry was the leading design trend for the bathroom. Kohler continues to expand its tub collection, introducing smaller sizes and free-standing designs with jet action. Ann Sacks introduced gold- and silverleafed tile collections that add Moroccan-inspired glam to wall surfaces. Texture and color played a huge role in wall coverings. Check out these kitchen upgrades The kitchen is the focal point of any home. It’s a place where you eat, congregate and celebrate life’s big moments. If you are an empty-nester looking for the kitchen of your dreams, a parent seeking to match your kitchen to your growing family or you simply feel inspired to change things for the better, it’s time to stop dreaming and start planning. Your dream kitchen has many details that complete the look. Three popular upgrades sure to add style and substance are granite countertops, new cabinets and stainless steel appliances. Here are the things you need to look for when considering your kitchen upgrade, courtesy of DirectBuy.com.

Continued from Page 27 attention they deserve. • Find the pattern. Some countertops have a small formulaic pattern while others feature more variety. It all comes down to what you find visually pleasing and what fits your style. • From start to finish. Granite countertops are available in polished or honed finishes. If you’re looking to create a classy, state-of-the art kitchen, the polished finish is probably the better choice. But if you’re more interested in that classic kitchen feel, consider the honed look. Your best place to get answers to any of your questions is your kitchen products supplier and design center, where they can work with you to determine the best fit for your needs.

NEW CABINETS Kitchen cabinets provide

functional storage options as well as aesthetic appeal — based on their color and quality. This makes selecting the right cabinets very important. Here are some things to consider when shopping for new cabinets: • What’s your style? Do you love big, bold vibrant colors or are you a person that enjoys the sleek, clean look of polished glass. Decide what type of cabinets appeal to you and be sure to compare your choice to your appliances and countertop selections. • What about green? Want to find the perfect cabinets and protect the environment? You can do this by looking for cabinets made from bamboo, reclaimed wood or wheat board. • Find new space. Installing new cabinets allows you the opportunity to

improve storage space options in your kitchen. Floor level storage is a great bonus and you can extend your cabinets all the way to the ceiling just by removing the soffits.

STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCES Today’s stainless steel appliances not only look great, and are easy to clean, but the range of choice you have is tremendous. So how do you determine which model is right for you? Here are some things to consider: • Less is more. How big does each of your appliances have to be to satisfy the needs in your home and what are your space options? If space is tight, you can also improvise by selecting a smaller refrigerator and then have a separate wine and drinks fridge.

These can often go under the counter and replace a standard cabinet. • Energy efficiency. Selecting energy-efficient appliances will save you money in the long run. Look for ENERGY STAR models whenever possible and you’ll cut expenses while reducing your carbon footprint. • Where do you start? If you are replacing all of your appliances, start with the largest one, the refrigerator. How large a unit are you looking for? Do you want dual French doors? What about an in-unit water dispenser? Is counter-depth important? Consider these questions in advance to narrow your search. Stainless steel appliances have different finish patterns, so select your refrigerator first and then look to match that pattern while shopping for your other appliances.

Give appliances some loving care By Angie’s List

Most people depend on their kitchen appliances for daily use and occasionally for a cooking marathon before a holiday feast. They’re staples of the kitchen, and expected to work. But as soon as the refrigerator stops cooling or the oven won’t warm, panic sets in. Appliance repair pros say regular, routine maintenance and care can prolong the life of kitchen appliances and prevent untimely repairs. Check out these tips to keep your appliances in tiptop shape.

REFRIGERATOR “The most important maintenance you can do on your refrigerator is to clean the condenser coils regularly because the coils are covered with dirt, grime, debris, pet hair and all that kind of stuff and it overheats the refrigerator,” says Bill Krier, president and CEO of highly rated (on Angie’s List) Broad Ripple Appliance in Indianapolis. He says the debris puts added stress on the refrigerator’s components, including the compressor. “The parts have to work harder and don’t last as long,” he says.

To access the coils, remove the grill at the bottom or back of the fridge and use a broom or vacuum to clear debris. For subzero refrigerators, the coils are usually located on the top of the unit.

DISHWASHER “The biggest thing you can do to keep your dishwasher running well is to clean food off your dishes before you put them in,” Krier says. Food bits get stuck in crevices, gum up moving parts and cause bacteria to form. Krier recommends using a dishwasher cleaning product every three to six months to remove calcium buildup. Calcium deposits can clog the dishwasher’s sprayer arm and impact cleaning efficiency. He says cleaning products containing citric acid effectively remove calcium buildup. For another trick to remove calcium buildup, place a cup of white vinegar on the top shelf of an empty dishwasher and run a load with hot water.

MICROWAVE Krier recommends cleaning your microwave regularly to remove food particles. “Even though it’s stuck on there, the

microwave is going to keep heating the food pieces,” he says. “After time it’s going to get hard as a rock.” Krier says microwaves heat food particles at high temperatures, which can then burn the top and sides of the microwave. He recommends cleaning the inside of the microwave with glass cleaner. To remove stubborn food bits, boil a cup of water or white vinegar in the microwave to loosen the food particles, which you can then easily wipe off with a sponge.

STOVE AND OVEN Have you ever placed aluminum foil on the bottom of your oven to catch food spills? Although it seems like an easy way to keep your oven clean, Krier says aluminum foil blocks airflow and can interfere with the heating element, causing it to fail or require recalibration. To keep a smooth-top stove looking new, Krier recommends scraping off burned food bits with a razor blade and cleaning the surface with glass cleaner. Projects to re-create basement Continued from Page 31 ment has a big impact on the space immediately. Use 2-by4s to mark where the walls will stand and place studs 16 inches apart. Then nail the panels to the wall where the edges meet the studs and cover the seams with drywall tape. Once the walls are up, mud the seams and areas where nail pops appear. A drywall saw or power saw will help you shape your drywall perfectly, but if you don’t own one, you don’t have to buy one. It’s more cost-efficient to simply rent it instead for this one-time project. Don’t forget to add drywall stands to your rental list.

A TOUCH OF PAINT

A fresh coat of paint means you won’t have to stare at those drab walls in your new space. You can paint the space by hand, but if you have a large

basement and you want to give every room that professional look, rent a paint sprayer instead. The cost is worth the time saved.

FRESHEN UP YOUR FLOOR If your basement is completely unfinished, you probably have cold, concrete floors. How you improve them is up to you. If you want the polished, marbled look, consider renting concrete floor finishing equipment for a look that’s sure to amaze. And if the appearance of hardwood is more your style, laminate flooring panels are inexpensive and easy to install. Lastly, if you want the feel of carpet beneath your feet, don’t forget to add the pad first to make those future steps a pleasure.

ELIMINATE THE STINK Your new basement is coming together, now what can you do about that musty base-

ment smell? A dehumidifier can help. You can purchase one at your local home goods store and when you get it home, try to place it near the washtub sink if your basement has one. This will allow you to drain right into the sink and save you from having to empty the dehumidifier regularly.

INSTALL A SUMP PUMP Now that you’ve refinished your basement, don’t let water damage ruin all your hard work. A sump pump can protect against flooding issues and installing one is easy. Most new homes have a location marked for a sump pump; it will look like a small well. Follow the water pipes in your home and you can find it. Once you do, purchase a sump pump from your local home goods store and follow the easy instructions to install in less than an hour. — Brandpoint

Insulated garage door raises efficiency As winter winds down, this may be the right time to upgrade your garage door from an older non-insulated version to a modern, energy efficient garage door. The garage door is generally the largest moving object in your home and offers the greatest exposure to the elements. An insulated garage door will maintain the temperature in your garage in the winter and summer and likely decrease heating and cooling costs. Insulated garage doors not only make the garage more comfortable inside but also affect the rooms Continued on Page 33

Insulated garage door lifts efficiency Continued from Page 32 adjacent to or above the garage. In addition, a well-insulated garage helps keep moisture out, and its sturdy construction offers a far greater noise-reducing sound barrier than non-insulated models. What should consumers look for in an energy efficient garage door? For starters, check out the Rvalue. R-value is a measure of thermal resistance to heat flow and is how most garage door manufacturers show the energy efficiency of their product. The higher the R-value of a door, the more insulation you’ll get. Second, look at the door’s construction. Well-insulated doors will have a “triple-layer” construction, consisting of environmentally safe polystyrene or polyurethane ther-

mal insulation between two layers of heavy-duty steel. Homeowner Rob Slaughter in North Carolina recognizes the energy savings and noise reduction values of his new garage door. “The original garage doors that were installed when our house was built in 1999 were non-insulated single-layer of steel. Insulated doors are far superior to just plain steel doors in performance — not to mention the improved appearance,” Slaughter says. “The new doors are much quieter when we open and close them and don’t have the hollow rattle of the steel doors. “I could almost instantly feel our garage warming up after the installation of our new door, which happened to be on an unusually cold day in November. How to stop heat loss from fireplace

Heating and cooling your home typically comprises nearly half of the average American’s utility bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Unfortunately, a portion of that expenditure is lost. While most homeowners know that insulating, patching and weatherizing can reduce heat loss, there is one major energy eater in your home that you may not have considered — that charming staple of dens, family rooms and anywhere people gather: the fireplace. Traditional masonry style wood-burning fireplaces are a leading source of indoor air loss and draft, even more so than windows and doors. “Traditional wood fireplaces have a lot of charm, but unfortunately, they can be inefficient even when they aren’t in use, says Becky Scribner, brand director at Heat & Glo, a Continued on Page 35

How to stop heat Insulated garage loss from fireplace doors efficient Continued from Page 34 manufacturer of gas and wood fireplaces, stoves and inserts. However, you don’t need to sacrifice your fire in winter to lower your bill — in fact, it’s possible to convert your fireplace into an energy-efficient heat source with the following tips: • Don’t send your hardearned money up and out the chimney. When your fireplace is not in use, make sure your chimney damper is closed. You may also install a flue sealer, which is an affordable, inflatable stopper that fits below the damper to further seal off the chimney. • Ensure your chimney and fireplace is inspected, maintained and cleaned annually. A contractor can ensure the job is done safely and thoroughly. • Add doors or a cover to the front of your fireplace to help

reduce the draft and add a nice aesthetic. • Consider a gas fireplace insert. In addition to lowering your energy bills and generating more radiant heat, they’re cleaner to maintain — no ash, soot, or smoke — and are low maintenance, turning on and off with the flip of a switch. Learn more about the benefits of a gas fireplace insert at www.heatnglo.com/Rekindle. • For those who love the smell, crackle and process of building a real fire, don’t despair. Pellet and EPA-certified wood inserts can be an easy, clean and efficient alternative as well. In the pursuit of energy efficiency, don’t say goodbye to tradition. Instead, give your fireplace a much needed upgrade. — StatePoint

When couples collide on decorating Compromise key so everyone feels right at home

LIVING IN a home that one — or both — members of a couple dislikes can lead to resentment, and worse.

By JESSICA REYNOLDS Chicago Tribune

Moving in with someone means making sacrifices. Couples have to adjust to each other’s schedules, surrender some privacy and come up with a fair system to decide who will take out the trash. But maybe the most unanticipated hurdle of mixing homes is agreeing on how the place will be decorated. His tufted leather sofa won’t exactly complement your white leather sectional. Your framed Edgar Degas prints alongside his mounted taxidermy? Uh, no. A recent survey commissioned by online art store UGallery found that nearly 60 percent of women respondents thought “managing different home decor styles” was one of the biggest move-in challenges for couples. This includes coming to a consensus on

colors and furniture, how to decorate walls and — the most cited in the survey — how to incorporate existing household items with your partner’s. “The goal is to create a home everyone loves and feels loved and nurtured in,”

said Sharon Hanby-Robie, interior designer and author of “Decorating Without Fear: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating the Home You Love” (Thomas Nelson). For it to happen, compromise is a must. Continued on Page 38

When couples collide on decorating

Continued from Page 37 Without it, you’ll both be living in a home that one — or both — of you dislike. That can lead to resentment, and worse. For some couples, redecorating can be so divisive that it threatens the relationship. A 2013 survey by Houzz, a website for home remodeling and design, found that 12 percent of respondents considered separating or divorcing amid a home remodel. “One of the things I recommend to my clients is that they shop together,” said Jonathan Alpert, psychotherapist and author of “Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days” (Center Street). That way, both of you can have input and no major decisions will be made without the other person’s consideration. If the dispute is about whether to keep or discard items you both already own, be empathetic, Alpert advised. Try to understand why your

significant other is adamant about keeping something. People’s identities are often formed by material items, so whether it’s furniture, collections or artwork, things can be very near and dear to someone, he said. On the flip side of that, things are only things: Don’t let someone’s belongings dictate how you feel about them. “If you fell in love with this person, then certainly you can live with the furniture they might like,” Alpert said. Keep in mind, though, that if an ugly (to you) couch or R.E.M. poster is driving a wedge in your relationship, it may be indicative of more severe underlying problems. These feelings can manifest through arguments over which wallpaper to put in the dining room or whether to throw out an ottoman. “It’s not always about what we see on the surface,” Alpert Continued on Page 39

Reframing the conflict Emotions can run amok amid the stress that comes with decorating issues — whether you’re moving in together or redoing an existing home. Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist with experience in advising couples, offers these tips to help you and your partner avoid unnecessary conflict during the process. • Shop as a team. Couples who need to make major purchases like new furniture, wallpaper or paint should go together to pick these items out. This lets both partners voice their thoughts before buying and doesn’t leave anyone feeling snubbed or surprised. • Start fresh. Those moving in together for the first

time should try to find a new place of their own whenever possible, instead of one person moving into the other person’s place. The first one to live there might become territorial and falsely believe he or she has a greater say in decorating. That doesn’t bode well for a strong partnership. Look at the big picture. You might care immensely about your home’s appearance, but is it worth jeopardizing your relationship for? Look at the cost of putting up a fight over certain items and ask yourself if it really matters that much to you. If it does, make sure your partner knows how much you care and why. If not, let it go.

When couples collide on decorating Continued from Page 38 said. “Sometimes a couch is a lot more than a couch.” Rachel Waldron, an interior designer who lives near Seattle, said that most of the time there’s one partner who’s dictating the design decisions. She said she prefers when both partners attend meetings to discuss design plans, even if it might lead to bickering. “As a designer, you tend to play marriage counselor sometimes,” she joked. But conflict has its rewards.

“I THINK the most beautiful designs come from opposition,” she said. Julie Davis Canter of Redding, Conn., understands not seeing eye to eye with your significant other on design. She said she and her husband recently bought a set of chairs to go with their dining table — after a year of searching. “(My husband) thought my choice looked like 18th-centu-

ry France, and I thought his looked like contemporary Scandinavian,” she said. Canter said they eventually agreed on a set she particularly liked from Restoration Hardware. She thinks the fact that they shopped for them on her birthday gave her an edge. “He’s 85 percent ‘it’s got to be utilitarian’ and I’m pretty much ‘it’s got to look great,’” Canter said. There’s also an emotional payoff when less demonstrative partners are invited to share their perspectives on design, Waldron said. When he or she speaks up — and is listened to — it yields a design that’s illustrative of the couple, not just one person. It also makes both people feel validated. To foster an atmosphere of cooperation, Hanby-Robie said that when she’s consulting with couples she asks each person to bring in up to 15 pic-

tures of rooms they like and to imagine their ideal space. “All of us have a place we’ve been that we just love and in the perfect world would have that room as our own,” she said. Maybe it’s a cafe, a library or a room from your childhood home. After understanding what each person visualizes, Hanby-Robie blends the concepts to create a scheme that fits the personalities and lifestyles of the couple. Hanby-Robie told a story about one of her clients, a married couple who recently redecorated their master bedroom. The man was intent on having a spacious leather chair in the room, but it clashed with his wife’s more feminine approach for the room’s design. “He got his leather chair,” Hanby-Robie said. “But it came in a pastel color.” Fortunately, he was OK with that.

If you and your partner can’t agree on an overall design scheme for your home, decorating room by room might be the solution. Hanby-Robie’s philosophy to this approach is that the person for whom the room is most important is the one who should call the shots. This approach can also be applied to where you display the Lladro collection, baseball paraphernalia, etc.

WHAT’S KEY for a couple to remember in home decor is that the space should ultimately be a welcoming environment for both of you, and anyone else who lives in the home. While you may have spent the last 10 years envisioning your dream dining room or bedroom, remember, it’s someone else’s home, too. Someone, don’t forget, you happen to love.
