Student hit on head, robbed
Kristi Ashby News Editor An Indiana State University student was struck in the head and robbed while walking in the area of Fifth and Tippecanoe streets on the west side of Lincoln Quad at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, police said. The student was struck on the side of the head, possibly by fist. This knocked the student to the ground, police said. Joseph Newport, the chief of police for Indiana State University, is currently looking into the situation. “It is an unusual case in that we are confident something struck the victim on the side of her head causing a scrape,” Newport said. “She did not lose consciousness.” The student suffered a minor injury. She was unable to provide any description of the suspect at the time of the incident, police said. “She acknowledges though that she saw no one before, during or after the incident,” Newport said. “No witnesses could be located. In our follow-up interview with the victim, she was unable to provide any additional information.” The person responsible then grabbed a small amount of cash from the student’s coat pocket and then fled in an unknown direction, police said. “It is confirmed she had a small amount of money missing though she is not convinced it came up missing during the incident,” Newport said. “The ISU Police are investigating if it is possible something was thrown from a nearby building as we are confident something occurred to this student.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the ISU Police Department at 812237-5555.

Etiquette dinner enhances student interview skills
Kayetlin Shady Reporter
Students came dressed in their business casual attire on Monday evening, ready to learn and practice interview skills at the Career Center’s networking and etiquette dinner. “It can be stressful to get out in public environments especially in front of people you don’t know, but that is the whole point of networking,” said John Turner, a former Sycamore now working for Sherwin-Williams as a marketing manager. “You have to put yourself out there and give the best portrayal of yourself that you can offer.” Turner and local employers attended the event to teach students skills such as using social media in job searches, proper dress and professional communications, among other interviewing tips. Overall, Turner’s goal was to give students a different perspective of what they can look forward to when they interview. Students held mock interviews with employers, giving them an idea what interviews will be like in a professional business setting. Students were also provided with business cards and were given the chance to network with other students and employers. There was also a five-course meal where the students learned how to dine professionally. James Carroll, a freshman business major, was glad he attended the event. “I would definitely recommend events like this to other students regardless of their major,” Carroll said. “Just talking to professional business people in the industry is helpful. their schedule to come here to ISU and eat with you providing very good insight on the job market and what goes on in the real world. The employers really break it down for you.” Erik Stevenson, a freshman marketing major, said the event helped him improve his dining etiquette.

“As students we never really think about being at a dinner for an interview, but now I have brushed up on my skills if I am ever in that position,” Stevenson said. I also get to reinforce my interview procedures concerning what to wear and what not to wear as well as the proper communication for an interview.”
