The Indiana Statesman exists for four main reasons: to provide the ISU community with news and information, to serve the campus as a public forum for student and reader, to offer student staff members chances to apply their skills in different aspects of a news publication, and to give students leadership opportunities.

“As the most architecturally significant building on our campus, it would provide a great home for student advising, tutoring, mentoring and other support services,” McKee said.

At over 100 years old, having been dedicated in 1910, Normal Hall is the last remaining structure built for what was, at the time, Indiana Normal School.

It is listed on the Indiana Registrar of Historic Sites and Structures, as well as the National Register of Historic Places.

Normal Hall has undergone minor alterations in the mid-1950s, including a large addition in order to provide book storage and due to maintenance problems, the removal and replacement of its dome with a plastered ceiling.

Despite this, it has never had any major renovations, leaving it in need of electrical, mechanical and ventilation system overhauls.

“We’ve just had a number of temporary things in there. We want to make sure to

use all of our space to the highest possible extent,” President Daniel J. Bradley said.

“Our goal is to bring the building back to function at a much higher level.”

Bradley said that the plan is to use Normal Hall for functions such as advisement and tutoring, with those areas having a newfound, centralized focus on campus.

Bradley added ISU currently doesn’t have an ideal location for advisement or tutoring to expand much, but the overall feeling is that the university needs change.

Bradley said it hasn’t had a serious function since the library moved to its current location.

Though Normal Hall was established as the academic center of campus for the span of several decades, it has since been displaced with the opening of Cunningham Memorial Library in 1973.

Kevin Runion, the associate vice president for facilities management, will be leading the project, with those individuals reporting to him taking the reins once the design is done.

Some conceptual design is already completed and an architect has been selected. The design work will be completed by the architectural firm, and then the facilities team will put the job to bid and select a contractor.

The restoration of Normal Hall as the Center for Student Success will be part of ISU’s 2013-2015 Capital Budget Request, submitted to the State of Indiana, McKee said.

“If approved by the Indiana General Assembly, funding for the project would be in the form of annual debt service payments on an estimated $16 million long-term debt issuance,” she said.

Bradley added that the legislature has yet to weigh-in, but that the

Administration for Higher Education has recommended funding and are currently working with the legislature to convince them that it is a project that deserves support.

The university’s goal is to have the Normal Hall renovations completed in time for the 150th anniversary of the institution, which falls on December 2015.

ISU a finalist in competition to find higher education’s most innovative climate leaders ISU Communications and Marketing Staff

Indiana State University today announced that it is a finalist in the Second Nature 2013 Climate Leadership Awards, an annual competition among US colleges and universities that are signatories of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

“Through the Institute for Community Sustainability, Indiana State is making great strides in becoming a more sustainable campus.

Congratulations to everyone who has worked on the many initiatives that have earned this finalist recognition,” said Daniel Bradley, ISU president.

The awards program is sponsored by Second Nature, a national nonprofit that seeks to create a sustainable society by transforming higher education, and PlanetForward, a media company that publishes news, opinion and insight about energy, climate and sustainability.

“If the destabilizing economic, political, and environmental events and natural disasters of the last two to three years have told us anything, it is that business as usual will not work,” said David Hales, president of Second Nature. “We need new and better ways of meeting human needs, and this year’s finalists are leading the way in creating - and teaching - sustainable solutions to the major economic and social issues of our time.”

This year, the award program’s fourth, drew the largest and most competitive pool of nominations to date. Second Nature will partner with PlanetForward, a web-to-television initiative that documents and shares energy, climate, and sustainability advances, on a public voting competition featuring the Finalists’ climate leadership and campus innovations during Earth Month (April 2013).

“The caliber of this year’s nominations is unparalleled,” said ACUPCC Director Ashka Naik.

“The depth and breadth of climate leadership and sustainability education programs demonstrated by these finalists is a reflection of their deep commitment

Poetry contest deadline approaches Brianne Hofmann News Editor The Academy of American Poets is accepting submissions until Feb. 25.

Participants may submit up to three poems for review. There are no restrictions on genre, style or subject.

Winners will receive national recognition, as their names are published in the academy’s journal, “American Poet.” They will also get a cash prize of $100 and a one-year membership to the academy.

Judges can select up to two honorable mention winners, but those selected won’t be eligible for the cash reward. All recognized poets get a certificate from the academy’s New York office as well as honors from the English department.

Winners will also be invited to read their works at the English department’s annual Creative Writing Recognition Day. Although the contest is held at colleges across the country, each contest varies depending on the university. So, only Indiana State undergraduate and graduate students can participate.

All entries are judged blind, meaning names are removed from the manuscripts beforehand. A cover sheet with name, titles and e-mail address is required.

This year’s judge is David Vancil, a poet and retired head of Special Collections at Indiana State’s Cunningham Memorial Library. He’s the author of “The Homesick Patrol” and three chapbooks.

Awards Timeline The awards will feature a public, online voting component. Each of the 20 finalists will produce a video that promotes its specific sustainability efforts. In late spring, award winners will be chosen, independent of the video voting competition, by members of the Second Nature Board not affiliated with ACUPCC signatory schools.

Business students learn through conference in India Austin Arceo ISU Communications and Marketing When senior management major Kelly Baer started taking a business entrepreneurship class, she never expected that in four months she would be teaching college students in another country about the nuances of social businesses around the world.

The Indiana State University student also could not have expected that she would receive a grant to do it.

Baer was among two groups of Indiana State students and a professor who collaborated with a college affiliated with Bangalore University in Bangalore, India, as part of an international conference on social entrepreneurship and sustainable development in emerging economies.

Aruna Chandra, associate professor of management at Indiana State, was invited to serve on the college’s advisory board to help organize the conference and to present her research on social businesses, which are mission driven organizations that create social value in response to pressing social problems. Unlike a non-profit venture, they are

profitable, but not profit-driven. Two groups of her students, including Baer, volunteered to work on different initiatives for the conference. They received grants from the Center for Student Research and Creativity to participate in the project.

“It made the effort well worth it,” Baer said.

“Even though it was a ton of work, I kept reminding myself that it was actually going to be presented at a real-life conference, and it helped that we were going to get funding for it in the end, too.”

Baer’s group compared social businesses in the U.S., Brazil and India to compare and contrast social ventures in different country contexts and to provide an international perspective on their approaches.

They wrote a 10-page paper and created a 60-minute PowerPoint presentation that was recorded and presented to college students in Bangalore during the conference.

“This gives my students exposure to social businesses in country contexts very different from ours,” Chandra said.

“They are comparing and contrasting various elements of these businesses and in the process are learning how social ventures play out in very different cultural and economic contexts around the world.”

Another group of students collaborating with Malleswaram Ladies’ Association First Grade College for Women worked on marketing the conference. They created a double-sided, single-page brochure that could be sent to perspective attendees. They also made a Facebook page and social media presence for the conference dedicated to teaching people

more about the different kinds of social businesses that exist.

“When you first think of a social business, you always think of nonprofits, and the money that they get is given by the government through grants, when really you can create a social entrepreneurship company that is for-profit,” Baer said.

The businesses they researched “created their company to make a profit, but yet make society a better place, which is actually something I’m really interested in for a future career,” Baer added.

The students spent close to 60 hours on the research for the written report and presentation, Baer said. The projects required more work than most in-class research projects, which is why the students applied for the research grants with help from the professor. These kinds of conference presentation research projects are rare for undergraduate students, Chandra said.

“They spent a number of hours doing the research, writing the paper and practicing the presentation,” Chandra said.

They also learned that research is very rigorous and time consuming, demanding and challenging. It’s not something that you just sit down and do in a matter of a few hours.”

Social businesses in hardship economies, such as India engage in necessity driven innovation or frugal innovation, which can offer many lessons to entrepreneurs around the world, Chandra said.

“They do so much with so little, and they have an entrepreneurial fire in them that is very infectious,” Chandra said, “and I think it’s very good to expose our students, particularly business students, to that spirit.”

As February comes in, it ushers in a variety of holidays, such as Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. However, one of the most prominent parts of February is Black History Month.

What started in 1926 as “Negro History Week,” Black History Month has grown into a largely recognized effort to educate and celebrate the history of African-Americans. It is the time where in schools famous African-Americans are taught about and talked about.

Figures such as Fredrick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois and Madame C.J. Walker are celebrated.

While the general consensus among the public is that Black History Month is a positive thing, there are some who disagree.

Actor and director Morgan Freeman has been famously quoted as being antiBlack History Month. In a “60 Minutes” interview with Mike Wallace, he said that he didn’t want a month for black

history.

“Black history,” said Freeman, “Is American history.”

This sort of debate has happened for many years. People ask why one race’s history is confined to a single month, or why there is a lack of a month for their culture. The only answer to this question is history.

History tells a story. It gives an insight back into times that we have not witnessed and gives us hope for the future. There was a time in America where Africans were nothing more than property. They couldn’t be legally married, they couldn’t stay together in family units if the owner decided to sell them, and they were forbidden to be educated.

Now, African-Americans have all of these abilities and more. Through the contributions made by people of all races, we are all now considered equal in the eyes of the law.

Freeman said that the way to get rid of racism is to not identify anything as black or white. However, the goal of Black History Month isn’t to try and separate white from black.

If anything, Black History Month gives those who wish to celebrate it the ability to pay homage to those who have made efforts to change the course of living for African-Americans in the United States today. As Americans, we have come a long way. From outlawing institutionalized slavery to voting a black man into the Oval Office, we continue to push old boundaries set by previous generations.

Black History Month gives us a chance to learn and to celebrate the lives and accomplishments of men and women who dedicated their lives and time to one cause or another. Be it politics, music or science, African-American’s deserve recognition for the things that they have done.

Shooting victim speaks out on gun control

Over the past several weeks, the topic that has been at the forefront of American political discussion is gun control legislation. California Senator Dianne Feinstein, possibly the most valiant and resilient politician in the gun control conversation, has made it incredibly clear to the public that she plans to reintroduce the semiautomatic assault weapon ban that was a prominent feature of the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which expired in 2004.

Senator Feinstein unveiled her bill on Jan. 24 during a Washington D.C. news conference unabashedly stating, “Enough is enough.” Feinstein’s bill would ban 157 models of military style assault rifles, shot guns, and semi automatic weapons while sparing 2,058 models of firearms. Her bill also includes reclassification of firearms with fixed ammunition clips that hold over 10 rounds, while banning weapons that are hardly different from models that are exclusively created for military combat.

Senator Feinstein pressed forward with the issue of gun control at a Senate Judiciary hearing on Jan. 30. Feinstein noted that since 1994, improvements within firearms technology have provided guns with more “killing power” that “tears through young bodies.”

Senator Feinstein is not alone in her “enough is enough” approach. At the Senate Judiciary hearing, Gabrielle Giffords, most notable for surviving an assassination attempt by gunman Jared Loughner, spoke powerful words as a witness to the need for gun legislation.

“Speaking is difficult,” she said. “But I need to say something. Gun violence is a big problem. Too many people are

dying, too many children. We must do something. It will be hard, but the time is now. You must act. Be bold. Be courageous.

Americans are counting on you.”

Congresswoman Giffords’ brief speech carried insurmountable power as those who listened to her were reminded of her struggle, and she briefly broke the divisions between politicians over the issue of gun legislation.

The discussion surrounding gun legislation has been regarded as a controversial issue. Opponents to such measures see it as an affront to American history and the primary source of law within our country, the Constitution. The Second Amendment provides us with a right to own weapons, the “right to bear arms” to be more specific. However, the nature of the Constitution’s details of this amendment are not clear. To what extent does someone have a right? We have a right to free speech, but that free speech is not without limitation. The Supreme Court adopted the “clear and present danger” doctrine to determine the circumstances in which a citizen’s First Amendment freedoms may be limited.

It seems that we are in the same place with gun legislation. The Second Amendment is not clear, but now we must determine exactly what that freedom will entail.

However, opponents to gun legislation should not be discouraged. The conversation at hand is an opportunity to truly reevaluate our processes and alter them to ensure a greater peace across the country. So, in a purely bureaucratic sense, no matter which direction gun legislation may go, a chance to revisit our policies and make them more effective and efficient is always welcome.

The perseverance being demonstrated

by Feinstein and Giffords is not coming from a place of tyranny or condescension.

Rather, they are demonstrating powerful concern for the well being of Americans, and in that concern, nothing will go unturned and nothing will be or should be taken off of the table. Lives and safety cannot be ignored due to irrational fears surrounding guns being taken away. If the topic entails life and death, it’s worthy of the attention of both sides of the issue, and every possible remedy to the problem must be seriously considered.

Super Bowl Sunday Funday The Super Bowl is not just a football game. The two teams are fighting for their lives for a title they will carry with them for the rest of their days.

One of the best parts of the Super Bowl is the commercials. We can always depend on the commercials where an animal does something hilariously outrageous, someone gets hurt or a beer is guzzled down. The crazy reality about these commercials is that companies dish out $3.5 million on a 30-second commercial alone, according to statisticbrain. com. That number has increased a ridiculous amount since 1970 when an advertisement was $42,000. One of the greatest this year was, of course, Doritos. They are known for their comical pieces and are chosen based on an online contest.

Another staple of the Super Bowl is the tasty and fattening food we stuff our faces with. Squidoo.com says that Americans put down nearly 30.4 million pounds of snack foods during the day, double the normal amount and $237.2 million is spent on soft drinks alone during Super Bowl week. Pizza Hut expects to sell 2 million pizzas on the day of Super Bowl XLVII which is 60 percent or 1.3 million more than an average day. That’s a whole lot of pizza.

We can’t forget about the alcohol though. 49.2 million cases of beer are

sold on Super Bowl Sunday. Of course this leads to the dreaded postgame hangover. Convenience store chain 7-Eleven even reports that antacid sales increase by 20 percent this weekend. The good thing about this game is no matter the score, you’re destined to have some tasty food that will leave you feeling like a stuffed turkey.

Another great thing about this game is the entertainment, or sometimes lack thereof. The half-time show is always a big event and according to Yahoo, was more popular than the actual game in 2012. During Madonna’s halftime show last year, the rating was 48.1, according to TVbytheNumbers. com. The average rating for the entire broadcast of Patriots-Giants was 47.8 even though it did spike to 51.8 in the final half hour of the game. That means that nearly 114 million people watched Madonna flaunt it. One of the most notable half-time shows was of Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson back in 2004. Ironically as Timberlake sang, “I’ll have you naked by the end of this song” he ripped part of her dress creating a major wardrobe malfunction and leaving Jackson’s breast exposed to the world.

We’ve also had some pretty horrible half-time shows that have been burned into our minds. International Business Times lists the top five worst and on there is a performance from just two years ago. The Black Eyed Peas, Slash and Usher disappointed us greatly that year. I love Fergie just as much as the next girl, but her attempt at Sweet Child of Mine left me severely disappointed. This year as Beyonce takes the stage, many expect her to nail the set and “wow” the crowd.

Even though it’s just a minor part of the game, this performance can make or break the mood.

So even if you aren’t a real fan of football more than likely there’s something you can enjoy about this celebration.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 It was found that African-American women are the least likely to commit suicide. Although 80 percent of suicides are committed by men, women are over four times more likely to attempt suicide.

Women are less successful in suicide and are more likely to reach out for help.

The first step in preventing suicide is recognizing the signs. The general signs and risk factors of suicide include depression, hopelessness, anxiety, isolation or lack of social support, alcohol or substance abuse, any sort of loss, previous attempts of suicide, family history of suicide, mental disorders, unwillingness to seek help and access to lethal means.

There are certain other risk factors that are specific to college students such as the new environment, the loss of high school friends, the loss of the safety found at home, the academic and social pressures, lack of coping skills, feelings of failure and experimentation with alcohol or drugs.

Students should be aware of these risks in their peers and faculty needs to be attentive to the needs of their students.

Kenneth Chew, P.h.D., director of the ISU Student Counseling Center, said that the best place to pursue help on campus is the SCC. “The SCC has licensed counselors and psychologists and we routinely assist students dealing with personal crises or psychological emergencies,” Chew said.

In addition to the SCC, students can also receive personal counseling services at the Psychology Clinic in Root Hall and the University Hall Clinic, he said.

Van Brunt shared with those in attendance of the webinar that 86 percent of suicides are committed by students who have never sought help.

Van Brunt stressed that if signs of suicide are recognizable in someone you know, do not hesitate to refer them to an on campus resource.

The SCC is located on the third floor of the Student Services Building – 567 North 5th Street. Operating hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Presidential inauguration inspires discussion of AfricanAmerican progress

Day’Jonnae Riggins Reporter Valerie Hart-Craig, an ISU alumna, program coordinator of Mentoring Assistance for Prospective Scholars (MAPS) and a native to the Terre Haute community, returned to campus after an extended weekend in Washington D.C., being a witness to President Barack Obama’s second swearing in at the 2013 inaugural event. “[The inauguration was] still as significant as it was the first time,” HartCraig said. “Within our culture, the fact that [President Obama] is a black man [who] was allowed to live in his first term is significant.”

Hart-Craig chuckled lightly, and expressed a personal realization.

“Bigger than that, the significance was I know that my grandparents, and their grandparents and their grandparents talked about this happening as a far off, once upon a time thing,” she said. “They talked about it, but not many people believed it would happen in their lifetime, and I got to see it in my lifetime.”

Diann McKee , vice president for business affairs, finance, and university treasurer, shared similar appreciation.

“My husband and I attended the inauguration of President Obama in conjunction with my husband’s role on the governing board of Washington National Cathedral, which hosted a prayer service as part of the inaugural activities,” McKee said. “We were honored to witness the inauguration on Monday and to attend the service on Tuesday.”

However, Hart-Craig, who was sworn in for a second time by the greater Terre Haute branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People last Monday, does not believe King’s dream has been fulfilled yet. She believes African-Americans can do much better.

“Africans-Americans as a whole have to be more diligent about teaching our history and culture to our own,” Hart-Craig said. “If you go back to [King’s] speeches, he had no problem being an African American, as well as helping another American. As AfricanAmericans, we just don’t do that.”

On the 50th anniversary of his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would hardly recognize the America we have come to live in today.

Not only has the United States made it possible for a black man to become president for two terms, but with the efforts of King and countless others, Americans have also welcomed opportunities for many other AfricanAmericans such as Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry and anyone else that was given the check that, as King put it, “came back marked ‘insufficient funds.’”

A group that was once blocked from doors of the American Dream fought long and hard for equal voting and citizenship rights. Each of these were important aspects of King’s dream for American people.

In King’s speeches and writings in the last years of his life, he wanted all people, to embrace and appreciate their culture and heritage.

From 1963 to 2013, a dramatic change has occurred. But what AfricanAmerican’s haven’t fully accomplished, according to Hart-Craig, is equally expressing and embracing the African heritage as much as the American.

“The only culture that has been asked to integrate, or assimilate, is [AfricanAmericans],” Hart-Craig said. “As African-Americans, even though our ancestors hail from Africa, we were not able to bring the culture here.”

As King expressed, it was never an “either or.” King worked for and loved America.

“I am an American and I am an African American. All I’m saying is allow me to be who I am, in my country,” she said.

Hart-Craig believes in order for the African-American community to change this way of thinking, students must tell their story.

“If our [ancestors] would not have told our story, we would be in a pitiful state,” she said. “That’s how we [know] what’s going on. That is what’s important, that we know who we are.”

With the second inauguration of President Obama as inspiration, HartCraig believes that African-Americans can live up to the extraordinary dream of King.

Though, students must open their hearts more to each other, as sisters and brothers, as part of the human family, she said.

Junior Anna Munn scored a career-high 27 points to the Sycamores lead the Indiana 71 State women’s basketball Bears team to a 71-67 67 Missouri Valley Conference victory over the Missouri State Bears inside JQH Arena on Friday night, the team’s first win over the Bears since the 2007-08 season.

Missouri State (10-10, 2-6 MVC) raced out of the gates to a 16-9 lead with 10:16 remaining in the first half, capping a 15-4 run over six minutes of action on a jumper by Whitney Edie.

Indiana State (12-7, 4-4 MVC) responded with a 7-0 run of their own, tying the game at 1616 with 8:41 left in the half on a jumper by sophomore guard Travecia Franklin.

The Sycamores closed the first half on a 13-2 run, taking a 39-32 lead at the half behind a late offensive-spurt by senior Taylor Whitley. The lone ISU senior scored seven of her eight first-half points in the final two minutes of the period, including a pair of free-throws with 0.4 seconds on the clock. Munn led all scorers with 13 points in the first half, shooting 6-for-10 from the field. Freshman forward Marina Laramie added 10 points and five rebounds in the first half, as Indiana State outrebounded Missouri State by a 21-12 margin in the opening 20 minutes of play.

After a jumper by MSU’s Edie to start the second half, the Sycamores went on an 8-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to take their largest lead of the game, at 47-34 with 17:26 Final Score

remaining, on a 3-pointer from Munn.

Missouri State would not go away, however, using an active defensive effort to force seven Indiana State turnovers while allowing just a shot attempt (made by Whitley) over a fiveminute stretch. The Bears closed to within two points at the end of their run, at 51-49 with 11:39 remaining.

The Bears tied the score at 56-56 with 6:18 remaining, but Franklin and Munn hit backto-back shots before freshman guard Kasey Johnson answered a pair of MSU free-throws with a 3-pointer to give the Sycamores a 63-58 lead with 4:00 remaining.

Indiana State would hold at least a two-point lead for the remainder of the game, shooting 6-for-8 at the charity stripe over the final four minutes of action to close out their first victory over Missouri State. The victory is also just ISU’s fifth on the road against MSU, improving the Sycamores to 5-27 all-time in Springfield, Miss. against Missouri State.

Munn went for a careerhigh 27 points on Friday night, shooting 10-for-18 from the field while adding five rebounds.

Friday’s effort was Munn’s third above 20 points this season.

Whitley (13 points, 7-for-9 FT) and Laramie (10 points, eight rebounds) also went into double figures for Indiana State, as the Sycamores shot 50 percent (27for-54) from the field. ISU’s shooting effort was their best of the season and their first game at 50 percent since going 21-for-38 against Wichita State on Feb. 26, 2012.

The Sycamores dominated the glass on Friday, out-rebounding the Bears by a 39-26 margin.

Indiana State hit 27-of-57 shots from the field (47.4 percent), but Drake was able to convert 28-of-57 (49.1 percent).

ISU forced 14 Drake turnovers and scored 20 points off them.

Ben Simons scored 21 points to lead Drake.

RJ Mahurin opened the scoring for Indiana State off a feed from Manny Arop and scored seven of the game’s first nine points to race out to a 7-2 advantage on a lay-up by Devonte Brown after he recorded the steal. After the first media timeout, Dawon Cummings continued his recent string of success with a 3-pointer as the clock ticked under 15 minutes left in the first half for a 10-5 cushion.

Brown scored five of the Sycamores’ first 13 points as he hit a 3-pointer at the 11:59 mark of the opening stanza to give ISU a 13-9 lead. After Drake countered with its own 3-pointer, the Sycamores embarked on a 7-0 run and took a 20-12 lead with 7:59 to go on a driving lay-up from Odum. Drake ran its lead back out to 54-46 but Brown scored a driving lay-up and Cummings grabbed a steal and converted a conventional 3-point play at the 9:41 mark to get the Sycamores withing 54-51.

The Sycamores kept grinding away at Drake and scored four points in a row to knot the contest at 57 with just over seven minutes remaining on a driving lay-up by Brown, which followed one from Odum.

After empty possessions for both teams, Odum was fouled with 5:57 remaining and hit both free throws to push the Sycamores ahead 59-57.

After Drake scored four in a row and the Bulldogs regained the lead, Arop pushed the Sycamores ahead with his first 3-pointer of the game as the clock ticked under four minutes remaining for a 62-61 advantage.

Mahurin tied the contest at 65 with 1:35 remaining off a post feed from Gant. After Drake took the lead, Odum scored in the paint with 43 seconds left to tie the game at 67. After the Sycamores got a defensive stop, Odum had a jumper from 20 feet at the buzzer which missed to send the game into overtime.

Drake scored the first five points of overtime, but Mahurin answered with a lay-up off the feed from Odum to cut the Bulldog advantage own to 72-69.

Arop hit a tough jumper in the paint after a defensive stop to further cut the lead down to 72-71 with just over two minutes left in extra time.

Each team traded defensive stops before Drake controlled possessions with under a minute left. The Sycamores got yet another defensive stop and called a timeout with 29.7 seconds left. Gant got a clean look at the 3-pointer with eight seconds left but it missed. With 6.1 seconds on the clock, Chris Hines hit a pair of free throws and Cummings missed a trey at the buzzer to give Drake the 74-71 victory.

Indiana State returns to action on Wednesday, February 6 when they face off at home against nationally-ranked Creighton. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. (ET).

Pounds lead nation following Meyo Invitational Craig Padgett Reporter Senior thrower Brandon Pounds leads the nation and broke records in the men’s weight throw after competing at the 2013 Meyo Invitational.

Pounds’ throw of 22.55 meters winning the weight throw currently leads the nation by nearly three feet. The throw also broke the ISU school record.

“It feels good being the number one weight thrower in the nation, but it’s only a ranking. I have to remain focused and continue to train until that time at Nationals comes,” Pounds said.

Joining Pounds was junior thrower Chris Fields, who threw a distance of 19.63 meters to place third at Meyo.

This throw ranks him 22nd in the nation. Sophomore Justin Applegate placed 11th with a throw of 17.37 meters. Fields also tied for 16th in the shot put with a throw of 15.47 meters.

In the hurdles, junior Greggmar Swift continued his undefeated season by

winning the 60 meter high hurdles race in a time of 7.79 seconds. His time of 7.72 seconds in the semi final equaled his season’s best. He remains at fourth in the national rankings. Freshmen Adarius Washington finished 11th place after advancing to the semi-final round with a time 8.13 seconds.

Another newcomer to the national rankings is junior Maurice Lyke, who finished third in the long jump with a leap of 7.30 meters. This distance puts him at 45th in the nation. Also in the long jump, junior Bobby Webb placed 11th with a jump of 6.93 meters and was also 11th in the triple jump with a 14.30 meters. In the pole vault freshmen Connor Curley cleared 4.80 meters to place 10th , while team mate sophomore Wes Schenck finished 13th with 4.65 meters.

In the sprints, senior Justin Baxtron placed sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.89 seconds, as he continues

to lead the Missouri Valley Conference in that event. Arqeil Shaw placed 12th overall in the 500 meter dash in a time of 1:05.42. In the distance events freshmen John Mascari placed second in the 5000 meter run in a time of 14:27.65.

Sophomore Taylor Head ran a time of 14:48.62 seconds to win his heat, but

finished 16th overall. In the 3000 meter run, senior Dustin Betz placed 12th in a time of 8:14.62 seconds.

“I feel the Sycamores performed very well this weekend. There were several personal records broken, as well as school records,” Betz said. We are setting ourselves up for a good showing at UNI in three weeks.”

The Sycamore 4x400 meter relay team of Shaw, Max Tuttle, Ryan Dickson and Brian Martin closed the meet with a with a season best time of 3:15.68 seconds.

This time earned the Sycamores 16th place.

The Sycamores have two more weeks to improve their marks before they head to Cedar Falls, Iowa for the 2013 Indoor Missouri Valley Conference championships.

Next weekend the team will be split between the Grand Valley State Big Meet at Allendale, Mich. and Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

Johnson sets two meet records at Meyo Invitational Kasey Kahle Reporter Senior thrower Felisha Johnson established two new meet record as the Sycamores traveled to South Bend, Ind. this past weekend.

Johnson set a new Meyo Invitational meet record, 20.81 meters, in the women’s weight throw.

The 2010 indoor women’s weight national champion continues to lead the nation in the event with her season best throw of 22.94 meters.

Johnson set her second meet record with a throw of 17.00 meters in the women’s shot put.

Senior Richelle Kimble competed in the pole vault invite clearing 3.75 meters to finish sixth. Freshman

Kimyanna Rudolph and junior Lauren Rice competed in the open pole vault finishing second (3.85 meters) and fifth (3.70 meters) respectively.

Other top field athletes for the Sycamores were sophomore Carmelia Stewart and senior Shalesa Smith competing in the women’s triple jump.

Stewart had a career best jump of 12.18 meters which put her in ninth place. Smith finished 10th place with a leap of 12.09 meters.

On the track, senior Stacia Weatherford finished in 10th place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.80 seconds.

Senior Leeann Michl was fifth overall in the women’s 800

meters in a season best time of 2:08.87.

Junior Jessica Zangmeister ran a career best time of 9:59.73 in the 3,000 meter and finished ninth place overall.

In the 4x400 meter relay the Sycamores finished seventh overall. Seniors Macey Black, Weatherford, Michl, and junior Shelby Higginbottom brought in a time of 3:46.27.

Currently, the Sycamores have three weeks before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Feb. 23.
