Dear Friends, In a couple of weeks, graduation will be upon us once again, and a new community of individuals will walk across the stage to receive that ever-important ticket for a promising future, the diploma. The ticket, of course, is only that – a ticket. It is what people do with the ticket that makes a difference.

Our speaker for commencement has used his ticket from Indiana Tech to make a difference in the world. Retired Rear Admiral David Nash graduated in 1965 from Indiana Tech with a bachelor’s of science in electrical engineering. Since that time, he has had many exciting experiences, including overseeing the re-building of Iraq. Whatever Admiral Nash does, it is with clear vision, commitment, integrity, and an eye for excellence. I am looking forward to hearing his message.

And speaking of tickets, on Sept. 24, as part of Homecoming 2005, a gala event to celebrate our 75th Diamond Jubilee will be held in place of our usual homecoming banquet. The Marcels will perform, and they are best known for their songs, “Blue Moon” and “Heartaches.” See the story on Page 6 for more details.

Students, faculty, and staff are all enjoying doing things out doors on our campus. People walk across the campus at a more relaxed pace, soaking up the environment. Ah, finally!

By the time you read this message we will be only weeks, perhaps days, away from Commencement. This year our graduation ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 14th at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Our class of 2005 will be leaving us and applying their knowledge, skills, and abilities to their chosen careers. For those of us privileged to work in higher education this is a bittersweet event.

We see the fruits of our labor cross the stage to receive well deserved degrees. We often think about the interactions we have experienced during the academic year. And of the friends, acquaintances, and colleagues we have met and grown with. For a fleeting moment we wonder whether we will see many of our graduates after they leave Indiana Tech. Some move forward in life and lose touch with us. But many do stay connected and come back to visit during homecoming and throughout the year.

If you are an alumnus or friend of the university who hasn’t been back for a visit, know that we would love to see you. Like the joy of springtime and the newness of plants, flowers, and trees, we would welcome you home…to Indiana Tech. Come see us!

Graduation Date Grows Near Commencement takes months of planning, but as the date draws nearer university staff are putting the finishing touches on this year’s ceremony.

Indiana Tech’s 84th Commencement ceremony will be at 2 p.m Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. More than 550 graduates are expected to participate in the ceremony.

As part of the celebration, the university will award an honorary degree to retired Navy Rear Admiral David Nash. The 1965 Indiana Tech graduate served as director of the program management office for the recently deactivated

Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq.

In addition to the awarding of degrees, a surprise guest will make an appearance as the ceremony draws to a close.

Between meetings and exploring campus during her first week on the job, Dr. Elaine A. Pontillo had little time to settle into her Seitz Center office.

Future of Academics Pontillo joins university with eye on expansion Indiana Tech greeted Dr. Elaine Pontillo like a breath of fresh air after a long winter when she arrived on campus in early April.

The university chose Pontillo as vice president for academic affairs in January, but she did not formally join the administration until April 4. After serving as vice president for instructional and corporate services at

Stark State College in Canton, Ohio, for more than 10 years, she comes to Indiana Tech at a time when several new academic programs are on the horizon and longstanding programs are being strengthened.

“I was drawn by what I perceive as the direction of the institution to look ahead and a commitment to career preparation programs,” Pontillo said.

“I have a passion for this type of education that really touches people’s lives. Indiana Tech appeals to students who have that desire to improve. In most cases, these students are here to better themselves and contribute to society economically and personally.”

Pontillo’s background in curriculum development was one of the things that prompted university officials to hire her as vice president for academic affairs.

“Elaine is well-versed in program development and is an exceptional faculty leader,” said Dr. Arthur Snyder, Indiana Tech president. “What a wonderful addition to our leadership team.”

Pontillo whole-heartedly embraces the idea of working as part of a team to lead the university forward.

“This is a leadership role in and of itself, but it’s also part of a leadership team,” she said. “One reason I came

“In my previous position, I’m most proud of supporting my team members so they could do the things they needed to do,” she explained.

“And I’d like to do that here – support those in the academic area so they can provide the best education possible.

I can’t do everything, but perhaps I can touch the people who are doing things.”

The biggest difference in moving from a two-year institution like Stark State to a four-year institution like Indiana Tech is the range and level of academic programs. While Pontillo acknowledges that she faces a steep learning curve in getting to know Indiana Tech, she sees a great deal of potential.

“I think we have a great opportunity here to expand our programs. Some of

“Elaine brings a wealth of experience to Indiana Tech,” he said. “She exudes an enthusiasm for the type of careeroriented professional degrees that we aim to provide.”

Pontillo understands that the ultimate responsibility of the university is to provide worthwhile educational opportunities for its students.

“I am a proponent of quality educational programs,” she said. “I want students and alumni to be proud of what they are getting and what they have gotten from Indiana Tech.”

Extra Credit

Books and classroom lectures have long been considered a staple of the educational process, but they certainly aren’t the only way to acquire the skills needed to be successful. As a handful of Indiana Tech students recently discovered, learning often takes place

them to use their skills to help an area business. The students were grouped into two teams, and they set out to design an information system to automate the Three Rivers Food Co-Op Natural Grocery store in Fort Wayne.

Each team devised a plan to create a self-funding pointof-sales system at the store, and their ideas were presented to the store owner at the culmination of the project. “They were pretty innovative with their approaches,” Fontaine said.

Electronic Commerce Systems class this spring are creating e-commerce Web sites for several Fort Wayne businesses.

At the end of the course, the companies involved will have an operational Web site that enables them to market their products and services to Internet users across the globe.

Of course, not all real-life experiences can be written into a course syllabus.

Sometimes, they happen quite by accident.

Ken Wilkinson, director of the New Haven-Adams Township Parks Heather Hume and Recreation department and an adjunct professor at Indiana Tech, recently helped facilitate one of those unscripted learning experiences.

The New Haven Girls Softball League instituted a fast pitch league for the first time this year. As the season got under way, fast pitch commissioner Vince Fendel discovered that many of his players and coaches were unfamiliar with the fundamentals of the game.

Hearing this, Wilkinson thought of several Indiana Tech softball players in his Introduction to Recreation Services class. He asked the women whether they

“These girls, their eyes just lit up,” Wilkinson said. “They remembered being 10-, 11- and 12-years-old when they got their start in fast pitch. I was overwhelmed by their response.”

Catcher Heather Hume joined pitchers Nikki Winger and Cassie Acosta in New Haven, and the three athletes were amazed by the enthusiasm of the young girls in the program. “The kids seemed really glad that we were there to teach them what we knew,” Hume said. “They were eager to learn.

They listened to us very well and tried to correct themselves when we told them Nikki Winger what they needed to do.”

Fendel said the 35 participants were in awe of the women from Indiana Tech.

“The younger kids, they were all wideeyed,” Fendel said. “Their eyes were as big as softballs when they watched them pitch.”

Wilkinson, who was unable to attend the clinic, said he was incredibly moved

when he heard about all that transpired.

“Sometimes all we hear about is the bad things that teen-agers and young people do,” he said. “Here’s the good stuff.

These are college students giving up their free time, which they don’t have a lot of – especially athletes.”

Hume said she learned quite a bit from working with the New Haven players. As a catcher, she developed an appreciation for the work involved in being a pitcher.

At the same time, she strengthened her public speaking skills and gained confidence as she found herself in a situation in which she had to interact with a group of complete strangers. “We really enjoyed the whole experience,” Hume said. “We had fun teaching them something that was new to them. It kind of made me realize how much I know. I remembered how I was when I was their age. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Becky Norris, head coach of the Indiana Tech softball team, said she strongly encourages her players to get involved in community activities. The entire team recently helped facilitate a free clinic for the Fort Wayne Fire, a fast pitch 12 and under team. The younger players were very excited to have

a chance to work with the girls from Indiana Tech. “They were thrilled to come over and work with our college kids,” Norris said. “It was an exciting time for them.”

Norris said there’s much to be gained from getting out and doing things for others in the community. First, it teaches her players that there are kids out there who haven’t had the kind of instruction that they have had. It also helps younger kids understand that it takes hard work – in the classroom and out – to be a college athlete. “There’s more to Indiana Tech softball than softball,” she said.

Warsaw Welcomes New Classroom Facility Plainfield Will Be Next Site The new Warsaw location for the College of Professional Studies is up and running. Classes began meeting at the new building in early January, and the official grand opening was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 24.

The facility at 2180 North Pointe Drive hosts six undergraduate and two graduate classes each week. The space also provides the resources for professional development activities, such as seminars on resume writing and interviewing skills.

After the success of the Warsaw

expansion, the College of Professional Studies will target the west side of Indianapolis with a location in Plainfield. A 6,000-square-feet building is being built with Indiana Tech planning to occupy 4,000 square feet.

Phonathon Enjoys Success Many thanks to all of our alumni who took time out of their busy schedules to speak with our student callers during the 2005 Annual Fund Phonathon. They truly enjoyed talking with you. We reached about half our alumni during three weeks of calling.

Thank you especially to those who made a pledge while talking to our callers. We were able to secure about $117,000 in pledges. This generous support means so much to the university and our students. Many traditional students would be unable to attend Indiana Tech without financial aid. Our adult learners also benefit from the improvements your support helps to fund.

Volleyball Set for Return in Fall 2005 A new era in Indiana Tech athletics began Friday, Feb. 11, when 14 young women signed Letters of Intent to play volleyball this fall.

“I feel honored that I have such outstanding athletes coming in next year,” said volleyball coach Laura Douglas.

The group of players at the signing included 10 from area high schools, one from Michigan, one transfer student, and two current Indiana Tech students.

Douglas is a native of Fort Wayne and enjoyed a successful college volleyball career at Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne. She received such accolades as Conference Player of the Year, All Conference, Academic All American, and Scholastic Player of the Year. Douglas still holds many IPFW volleyball records.

The team is expected to play 30 to 35 games in the fall, including competition in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

Warriors Earn Spot In National Tournament The Indiana Tech Warriors earned an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II men’s basketball tournament by winning the WHAC Tournament with a 92-87

victory over Cornerstone University.

The team made a strong run in the tournament in Branson, Mo., beating College of the Ozarks and St. Vincent to reach the quaterfinals.

In the third game, however, the Warriors were defeated by Oregon Tech.

Several Indiana Tech basketball players earned recognition from the NAIA after the end of the season.

Faculty & Staff News JANUARY Suzi Twitchell moved from the registrar’s office to the traditional admissions staff as admissions coordinator.

Julianna Bengs moved from the Student Information Center to a position as transfer credit specialist in the registrar’s office.

Symposium on Therapeutic Recreation and Adapted Physical Activity from April 22 through 24 in Springfield, Ill. She will co-present with Indiana Tech student Amber Stewart on the topic “Debunking the Spitting Myth: Llamas as a TR Modality.”

John Brinkman, adjunct instructor in psychology, graduated from Ball State University with a Ph.D. in school psychology.

Lisa McPherson joined the staff of Student Support Services as an administrative assistant.

FEBRUARY

Sheldon Goldstein was promoted to department chair of business for the Indianapolis Campus.

Sheena Gambrell became a fulltime member of the Institutional Advancement staff as an administrative assistant.

Beth Wiesner, assistant professor of therapeutic recreation, learned that her proposal was accepted for the Midwest

Faculty Highlight On Thursday, March 29, I was honored to receive an award as Indiana Tech’s nominee for innovative excellence in teaching, learning, and technology at the 16th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning in Jacksonville, Florida. That afternoon, I also had the opportunity to lead one of the conference workshops, an interactive presentation entitled “Bringing Out the Best — Engaging Adult Students Through Inductive Activities.”

The conference focuses on innovative learning strategies in higher education and attracts about 900 attendees from around the world in all academic fields. I had the opportunity to network and share ideas with faculty members from across the country and even from other countries. I also attended several workshops of interest including faculty mentoring and development, delivering online courses, critical thinking across the curriculum, and business ethics across the curriculum.

In addition to the honor of receiving the award, the highlight for me was meeting Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Edward Albee, one of our keynote speakers. On Friday evening, conference attendees had the opportunity to attend a performance of Albee’s play “The Lady from Dubuque” at the Florida Community College and then meet with him at a reception. He was gracious enough to autograph my program for my own aspiring writer (my son, Matt)!

Jim Spreen, associate professor of electrical engineering, was informed that his manuscript, “Using MathCAD to Help Visualize Electromagnetic Vector Fields,” was accepted for presentation at the 2005 American Society of Engineering Education Illinois/Indiana Section Conference on April 1 and 2 in DeKalb, Ill.

MARCH Dr. Kathleen Barlow was selected as recipient of the Cardinal Spellman Fellowship Award from Oxford University UK/Graduate Theological Foundation to complete final requirements for the Doctor of Ministry Degree with concentration areas of biblical studies and psychology and counseling. Barlow is an associate professor of English and communication and Chair of Arts and Social Sciences for the Indianapolis Campus.

After sixteen months as campus director in Elkhart/South Bend, Steve Harter has returned to the Fort Wayne Campus. Harter is now a senior admissions representative.

Allison Carnahan was officially named vice president of enrollment management after serving in the role on an interim basis for several months.

Julie Mansfield, assistant professor of computer studies, was named to the Cisco Networking Academy National Advisory Council.

Alumni Association Stays Involved Greetings, It is my pleasure to address you as president of the Alumni Association. We have an exciting year ahead of us because of the 75th anniversary of the university.

I would like to welcome our newest members to the board. At the last annual meeting, the Alumni Association voted in Curt French, Tom Smead, and Reid Hochstedler.

The Alumni Association has set several goals for the 2005 calendar year. Those goals include assisting

with development, participating in homecoming, maintaining the alumni dues rewards program, participating in a service project, and providing leads to admissions for potential students.

The dues reward program is new to the Association. Last year a committee obtained discounts for our dues-paying members. Your $10 dues payment entitles you to discounts from national car rental agencies and hotel chains as well as local discounts in the Fort Wayne area.

Remember, our job is to represent you and continue to make a contribution to

the university. We want our traditional and CPS students to know we are there for you, and upon graduation you are part of our association!

Trends was honored with a Gold Award in the Annual Admissions Advertising Awards. The fall 2004 issue was entered in the newsletter category of the competition sponsored by the Admissions Marketing Report.

Students Excel at SHRM Competition Six students represented Indiana Tech at the annual Society of Human Resource Management competition at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign in April.

Mark Fowler, Kelby Kershner, Kelly Jones, Chris Silva, Dave Snyder, and Stacy Spencer formed two separate teams for the Jeopardy-like intercollegiate competition between SHRM chapters on 30 campuses around the region. The Indiana Tech team finished in eighth place.

Criminal Justice On Tap Indiana Tech’s academic offerings will expand again this fall with the addition of associate and bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice for traditional and non-traditional students. “Criminal justice is a growing field, and it’s one in which we can excel with our unique combination of expertise in technology and business,” said President Arthur E. Snyder.

The associate degree in criminal justice will provide a broad overview of the criminal justice system and fulfill the entry-level education requirement of many law enforcement agencies. The bachelor’s degree allows students to specialize in either law enforcement administration or crime analysis. The associate and bachelor’s degrees will be offered through both the traditional program and the accelerated program in the College of Professional Studies.

In addition, the College of Professional Studies will offer a certificate in law enforcement supervision.

In addition to criminal justice degrees, the College of Professional Studies also will add a bachelor’s degree in information systems.
