The unanimous decision to end the strike comes two days after the writers and Hollywood studios successfully concluded talks for a new three-year deal on September 24. Following a marathon negotiation session, the two sides were able to find compromises on several key points, a critical one of which was AI overuse in the creative process, minimum staffing requirements for writer’s rooms and streaming residuals. “We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership,” the WGA said in a statement announcing the tentative deal on September 24. tentative agreement, which WGA membership will vote to ratify in the coming days. The guild’s agreement as gathered by Variety states the following guidelines of the new deal: - AI can’t write or rewrite literary material, and AI-generated material will not be considered source material under the MBA, meaning that AI-generated material can’t be used to undermine a writer’s credit or separated rights. - A writer can choose to use AI when performing writing services, if the company consents and provided that the writer follows applicable company policies, but the company can’t require the writer to use AI software (e.g., ChatGPT) when performing writing services.
- The WGA reserves the right to assert that exploitation of writers’ material to train AI is prohibited by MBA or other law.

Outlining India’s role, he said: "From the era of non-alignment, we have now evolved to that of Vishwa Mitra, a friend to the world. The New Delhi G20 Summit presided over by India "affirms that diplomacy and dialogue are the only effective solutions. The international order is diverse. And we must cater for divergences, if not differences. The days when a few nations set the agenda and expected others to fall in line are over", he said.
"Our vision of ‘One World, One Family, One Future’ sought to focus on the key concerns of the many, not just the narrow interests of a few," he said. The outcomes of the New Delhi G20 Summit that brought development and restructuring the global financial order to the fore "will surely resonate for years ahead", he asserted. Of his nation’s future, Jaishankar said: "As a civilisational polity that embraces modernity, we bring both tradition and technology equally confidently to the table. It is this fusion that today defines India that is Bharat. "India has entered the ‘Amrit Kaal’, a quarter century, where greater progress and transformation awaits us."

Chennai, Sep 26 (IANS) Close on the heels of losing power in Karnataka, the BJP’s move to break the jinx and get few seats from Tamil Nadu also seems tapering. The saffron party, which was planning to piggyback on the solid base of the principal opposition party of Tamil Nadu, AIADMK, faced a severe setback and a slap on the face of its state president, K. Annamalai when the AIADMK walked out of the alliance. Annamalai, from day one since assuming office as state president of BJP, has been taking aggressive postures and the AIADMK was sore that the young BJP leader was time and again insulting the legacy of its leaders. It was after the attack on C.N. Annadurai, the iconic Dravidian leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, that the AIADMK took a decision to snap ties with the BJP. The party had in a last minute patch-up bid, met the senior leadership of the BJP in New Delhi but it seems to have not received a positive response from the saffron camp leading to the party taking such a decision. It will be an uphill task for the BJP in Tamil Nadu now as without the support of a Dravidian major, the

The BJP leaders from Tamil Nadu were guarded in their response to the decision of the AIADMK. While party state president K. Indian agencies discuss threats to Sikhs, Hindus in Canada from Khalistani supporters Surrey in 2022 and sources said his murder was orchestrated by Hardip Singh Nijjar, who was recently killed by rivals. However, Canadian agencies never initiated any probe against Nijjar or any Khalistani operatives, they said.

Incidents of defacing of temples in the recent past were also discussed in the meeting. The officials also discussed how Khalistani supporters were openly intimidating Indian diplomats in Canada and as per them, this was clear cut violation of Vienna Convention. Other topics of discussions included the subtle support for Khalistani separatists, resulting
in the exclusion of moderate, proIndia Sikhs from major gurdwaras in Canada due to the influence and resources of pro-Khalistan elements (PKEs). Intelligence agencies' records indicated that Punjab was currently facing significant challenges due to extortion schemes originating from Canada. "Gang members based in Canada employ drones to transport drugs from Pakistan, which are then distributed throughout Punjab. A portion of the proceeds from these illegal activities is funneled back to Khalistani extremists operating in Canada. It is also affecting Punjab," a source said.

Washington, Sep 24 (IANS) The US was Five Eyes member country that provided some kind of corroborating intelligence that Canada used to firm up its assessment that Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and Khalistan activist, was killed in a plot by the Indian government, according to a report in The New York Times. The report, which is based on accounts from two allied officials, says the US, which is a member of the Five Eyes intelligence sharing compact with Canada, the UK, New Zealand and Australia, had no advance knowledge of the plot but provided Canada the "context". Ottawa developed the intelligence with the help of intercepts of communications of Indian diplomats in Canada. US officials have backed Canada's investigation and called for India

to cooperate, but they have not yet owned up to being the Five Eyes member country that provided corroborating evidence. They have, however, been very clear from that start in expressing "deep concern" on the substance of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations and swatted any suggestion that it had rebuffed Ottawa's attempt to put together a G7 condemnation and that a wedge had been driven in the relationship between the two North American and NATO allies that share a long border. Secretary of State Antony Blinken did indicate last week that the US was playing more an a passive, observer's role. "We have been consulting throughout very closely with our Canadian colleagues – and not just consulting, coordinating with them – on this issue," he told
"And from our perspective, it is critical that the Canadian investigation proceed, and it would be important that India work with the Canadians on this investigation. We want to see accountability, and it's important that the investigation run its course and lead to that result." The subject could figure at a meeting this week between Blinken and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who will head out to Washington DC after wrapping up his UNGA meetings in New York City. Nijjar, who was on India's list of wanted terrorists, was shot dead in Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada on June 18 by two men. Investigations are underway but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the Canadian Parliament shortly after his return from India after attending the G20 summit there was "credible intelligence" pointing to the involvement of India in the killing. The US Secretary of State went on to frame the allegations in a larger context.

Australians warned against looming natural disasters cyclones, floods, bushfires and also heatwaves," he said. Moon was speaking ahead of the first National Disaster Preparedness Summit, which began in Canberra on Monday.
Canberra, Sep 25 (IANS) Australia will face possible compounding and cascading natural disasters throughout this upcoming summer season, the nation's top emergency management authority warned on Monday. Brendan Moon, Australia's Coordinator-General for National Emergency Management, told reporters here that Australians should plan for the impacts of a range of disasters in the upcoming summer, reports Xinhua news agency. "We are going to experience a warmer, drier spring and summer, but we also should prepare for the possibility of
More than 250 representatives from federal, state and territory governments as well as experts from emergency services and industry were invited to the twoday summit to ensure a cohesive response to summer natural disasters. Experts have previously warned that Australia is facing its worst bushfire season since the devastating 2019-20 Black Summer blazes, which burned more than 240,000 square km of land. Last weekend, more than 20 participants of the Sydney Marathon were hospitalised during a heat wave. Ski resorts, including Perisher, the country’s largest, have closed early amid a lack of snow after the country's warmest winter since records began in 1910.
Also last week, dozens of bushfires broke out in the country, with more than 60 burning in the densely-populated state of New South Wales. In its latest seasonal outlook published in August, the Australasian Fire Authorities Council put large parts of eastern and central Australia on high alert for bushfires due to forecast hot, dry weather and high fuel loads. Despite the warning, Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt said in a statement on Monday that he has confidence in the government's response plans. "We know that due to climate change, disasters will become increasingly frequent and intense, which is why we have taken significant steps to build our resilience and response capabilities," he said.
to improve safety for users of dating services.
Canberra, Sep 18 (IANS) The Australian government has issued the online dating industry with an ultimatum to improve safety for users or face greater regulation. Michelle Rowland, the federal Minister for Communications, and Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth on Monday issued a demand that dating services implement a new voluntary code of practice by the middle of 2024. If a new code is not agreed to by the industry, Rowland said in a joint statement with Rishworth on Monday that the government would pursue legislative options
"Dating apps are now the most common way to meet a partner in Australia, yet the level of violence experienced by users of these platforms is deeply concerning. Online dating platforms must do their part to end violence against Australians," she said. "That is why I have decided to provide members of the online dating industry with an opportunity to work together to address the government's concerns." Research published by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) in October 2022 found that 75 per cent of Australian users had been subjected to some form of sexual violence facilitated via online dating services in the previous five years.
The government in January brought representatives from the dating industry together with experts, advocacy groups, and law enforcement agencies for the National Roundtable on Online Dating Safety. Rowland and Rishworth said in Monday's joint statement that many services have taken steps to protect users since January's meeting, but their efforts vary in effectiveness. "There is no arbitrary line between online and offline in our lives anymore. Abuse can cross between them like osmosis," Rishworth said. "We need to ensure that our community, including dating app users, know what it means to be respectful online, what kinds of behaviors are unacceptable, and the consequences for unacceptable behaviors."
AI-based blood test to predict alzheimer risk 20 years in advance Sydney, Sep 20 (IANS) Australian researchers, including one of an Indian-origin, have developed a simple, cheap and non-invasive blood test that could help predict a person's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease up to 20 years before symptoms show. Australia’s inflation rises to 5.2% Two injured in overnight "Food inflation continues to ease although differences remain across the food categories," Michelle Marquardt, ABS head of prices statistics, said in a media release. "Prices for bread and cereal products and dairy products have risen over 10 percent in the past 12 months, while fruit and vegetable prices are 8.3 per cent lower compared to 12 months ago due to improved growing conditions."
Canberra, Sep 27 (IANS) Australia's rate of inflation accelerated to 5.2 per cent in the 12 months to August, up from 4.9 per cent in the year to July as a result of growing housing and transport costs, the statistics bureau said on Wednesday. According to data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), a 7.7 per cent increase in
transport costs and a 6.6 percent increase in housing prices between August 2022 and August 2023 were the biggest drivers of the CPI spike, reports Xinhua news agency. Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices increased 4.4 per cent in the same period, down from a 5.6 per cent annual increase in July.
Electricity prices were 12.7 per cent higher in August than 12 months earlier and gas prices were up 12.9 per cent annually. Automotive fuel prices rose 9.1 per cent between July and August and 13.9 per cent annually. Australia in El Nino grip with soaring temperatures & bushfire risks Continued from Page 1
Canberra, September 22 (Australia India News Newsdesk) Australia’s weather bureau has finally declared that an El Nino weather event has developed resulting in an unusual September heat wave situation that sees temperatures rising with associated hotter and drier weather conditions in the country’s southeast, report media sources. Talking to media reporters, Bureau of Meteorology’s (BOM) head of climate monitoring Karl Braganza said, “We are already seeing extreme conditions in some parts of the continent, particularly in the duration of heat.” To put the whole situation of El Nino phenomenon into perspective, New South Wales (NSW) has seen temperatures reaching to 16C (60F) above the September average, recently, reports Al Jazeera. Media reports further show that temperatures in Sydney reached 34.4C (93.9F) recently, which is approaching the highest ever September record of 34.6C (94.3F) as was seen in 1965. As of now, as many as 61 bushfires across NSW have come to light, Al Jazeera quoted authorities

media sources.
In fact, BOM has confirmed the El Niño weather pattern after months of anticipation, saying that it is active over the Pacific for the first time in eight years, report media sources. Furthermore, BOM has also announced that another climate driver, known as a "positive" Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), has also developed, which means that the two significant climate events, i.e. El Nino and IOD would result in Australia seeing hot and dry months ahead, this year, particularly in the country’s eastern states, say media reports.
Responding to a reporter’s question as to what message the Prime Minister has for those who are vulnerable as a result of fires in New South Wales, following the development of the El Nino event, Albanese said, “We are bringing together, just next week, emergency services personnel and experts through Murray Watt. That will happen because we've anticipated this coming. The warnings are there. The science is there that our climate is changing. And unfortunately, we are seeing that on the ground as we saw during the summer of 2019-20. So we would urge people to follow advice when it is given.” The Prime Minister assured the public, saying, “We are doing what we can in the short term as well to ameliorate the risk. In the long term we need to tackle climate change. My Government is committed to measures to assist with climate change. Part of that is a shift in the energy mix to 82 per cent renewables by 2030.” The Prime Minister underscored the importance of projects like Marinus Link in Tasmania, which he said would have an important role in that transition. However, the Prime Minister expressed
This is evident from the words of BOM’s head of climate monitoring Karl Braganza, who said recently, "When (an El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole) occur together, that tends to increase the severity of rainfall deficiencies," media reports suggest. With the El Nino event being announced, parts of New South Wales were put on alert for "catastrophic" fire danger, associated with strong winds combining and unusually hot temperatures in the southeastern parts of the state, report

fisheries, and local weather from Australia to South America and beyond. El Niño events occur irregularly at two- to seven-year intervals. As El Niño brings rain to South America, it brings droughts to Indonesia and Australia. These droughts threaten the region’s water supplies, as reservoirs dry and rivers carry less water. Agriculture, which depends on water for irrigation, is threatened.

into regional hydrogen hubs all around Australia.” Emphasizing the global trend towards clean energy, the Prime Minister said, “The global shift to clean energy and decarbonised economies is a huge economic opportunity for Australia.” Echoing similar views Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said, ““Investing in an Australian green hydrogen industry puts us on a path to become a renewable superpower,” adding that “Green hydrogen will play a crucial role in our clean energy transformation and will create jobs and spur investment in regional Australia.” With expanses of available land, abundant solar and wind resources, South Australia (SA) is primed to become a world-class, low-cost hydrogen supplier, and the SA Government has a comprehensive plan to develop a hydrogen industry in the Spencer Gulf, including through its world leading Hydrogen Jobs Plan, which will include development of a hydrogen electrolyser, power station and storage facility. Highlighting the abundant natural resources SA has, its premier Peter Malinauskas said, “Our state is blessed with the key ingredients the world needs to decarbonise international economies – abundant coincident wind and solar resources, critical minerals, strong renewable energy penetration, and well developed industrial hubs.” He underscored the importance of utilizing these resources for the benefit of South Australians, saying, "We’re working closely with industry to maximise this opportunity to grow a new industry, which has potential to create thousands of jobs and improve the standard of living for South Australians for generations to come.” Peter Malinauskas also added, “Through our Hydrogen Jobs Plan, my Government is seizing the mantle to produce a world leading hydrogen electrolyser, power plant and storage facility.”
About the SA government’s intent to boost job creation using clean energy resources, the Minister for Energy and Mining in the Malinauskas government, Tom Koutsantonis said, “As the world seeks to decarbonise, hydrogen is emerging as a key commodity for reindustrialization. The Malinauskas Government has recognised this and we are investing in our Hydrogen Jobs Plan for the future.” He also added, “Renewable hydrogen can be used as a reduction gas to decarbonise South Australia’s iron industry – helping fortify our industrial capacity for a zerocarbon future.” The Australian Government, through the Net Zero Economy Agency and review of the National Hydrogen Strategy, will consider what is required to facilitate hydrogen supply chains. The Australian Government is working towards realizing its vision to build a clean, innovative, safe and competitive hydrogen industry that benefits all Australians. Towards this end the Australian Government is investing over half a billion dollars for regional Hydrogen Hubs, including in Pilbara, Kwinana, Gladstone, Townsville, the Hunter, Bell Bay and Upper Spencer Gulf. The recent Commonwealth Budget allocated $2 billion for a new Hydrogen Headstart program to scale up development of Australia’s renewable hydrogen industry. This critical new investment is all about making Australia a global leader in green hydrogen, as competition for clean energy investment accelerates around the world. By 2050, Australia’s hydrogen industry is projected to generate $50 billion in additional GDP and create over 16,000 jobs in regional Australia. The industry is also expected to create an additional 13,000 jobs from the construction of renewable energy infrastructure to power the hydrogen production.

India should move to ethanol or hydrogen cars instead of electric cars: Maruti Chairman On Maruti's decision to stop diesel car production, Bhargava said that while the government is not preventing anyone from making diesel cars, the compliance with CAFE standards will make their costs exorbitant. New Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS) The carbon footprint of electric cars in India would be much bigger than that of hybrid cars because in the country, 75 per cent of the electricity is made from coal, according to R.C. Bhargava, the Chairman of Maruti Suzuki Ltd. He made the remarks while addressing the 50th National Management Convention organised by All India Management Association (AIMA). Bhargava said that the electric cars will not be clean until India gets at least 50 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources. Until then, the hybrid cars will be cleaner, he said, adding that even shifting to CNG cars is a better option, as CNG is a cleaner fuel than petrol. "May be India should move to ethanol, hydrogen and fuel cell options instead of going for electric cars," he said. Talking about coming slightly late to the electric car market, Bhargava said that Maruti had built an electric version of the Wagon R but its cost was too high, and now Maruti would come to the market with larger electric models which could be more viable. However, he said that even with six electric models, the share of electric cars in Maruti's sales would be only 15 per cent to 20 per cent. He pointed out that today, the share of electric cars in Indian car market is only 2 per cent.
On the subject of the shift of the mass market from small hatchbacks to SUVs, Bhargava said that though the whole market is not shifting, the small car market is not growing anymore. He said that it is because of that the growth of Indian car market is only about 5 per cent a year instead of 8 per cent. Talking about automotive supply chain issues, Mr Bhargava said that currently there are no production constraints because of semiconductor shortage. However, he regretted that all electronics for Indian cars have to be imported. "India needs to get more component makers to make in India for India and for global supply chains," he said while also highlighting the lack of local electronics suppliers as the only weakness in India's auto components supply chain. Bhargava expressed confidence about the growth of India's car market. H e said that there is no other market in the world with the same growth potential, as other major markets such as the US, Japan and China have become saturated and rely on replacement sales. Talking about competition in Indian car market, Mr Bhargava said that Indian market has been very competitive for the past 15-20 years and now it is set to get even more competitive as global car makers can see an opportunity in the changing car technology and regulations. He said that Maruti will try to keep a large part of the Indian
car market under its control by offering the best of technology, reliability, and after-sale service. On the issue of stagnant growth of Indian manufacturing sector despite the increased ease of business and production-linked investment scheme, Bhargava said that the state government bureaucracies are still stuck in the licence and control mindset and even the entrepreneurs are more focused on accumulating personal wealth instead of growing their companies. "Time is not valued by state bureaucracies... and entrepreneurs cannot lay the blame only on labour laws," he said. Manufacturing sector growth is only 5 per cent while India needs a 12 per cent annual growth, he said. Talking about India's limited success in benefiting from the China plus one strategy of global companies, Bhargava said that India is not the only option for them, and many of them are moving to Vietnam. Regarding the new safety regulations such as Bharat NCAP, Bhargava said that so long as it is easy to get driving licence without tests, it will be difficult to bring down the accidents and deaths on Indian roads. He said that India has no system of mandatory vehicle fitness certification for cars and scooters. He pointed out that most of the road deaths involve two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. Bhargava is confident about the future of Indian car industry though the expensive transition to new technology and regulations are likely to keep its growth at about 5 per cent for the next decade, provided there are no unexpected shocks to the economy.

Earlier, this line was exclusively built to power export being produced in Arun III and two other projects. As of now, Nepal and India are trading business only through the 400 kv Dhalkehar - Muzaffarpur cross-border transmission line. The meeting also decided to upgrade the capacity of the Dhalkewar-Muzaffarpur crossborder transmission line which has a capacity for importing and exporting 600-MW of electricity. After strengthening of this transmission line, Nepal can sell 800 MW of electricity to India. In the last joint steering committee meeting held in February, both sides agreed to increase the volume of power to be traded via the 400kv Dhalkehar - Muzaffarpur cross - border line from 600 MW to 800 MW.

New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R.K Singh on Monday expressed confidence that India will achieve its target of producing 500 GW renewable energy well ahead of the 2030 deadline. Addressing apex business chamber FICCI's India Energy Transition Summit 2023, the minister further stated if the country had not lost two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it would have achieved the goal of setting up 50 per cent of its power generation capacity based on non-fossil fuels, by now. India has 424 GW of power generation capacity in place which includes around 180 GW from non-fossil fuels and another 88 GW is in the process of being set up, the minister said. "We will achieve 500 GW of renewable energy (RE) well before 2030…The RE capacity addition
Speaking at the event, New and Renewable Energy Secretary Bhupinder Singh Bhalla said India added 15 GW of renewable energy in the last financial year (2022-23) which would be enhanced to 25 GW in 2023-24 and then stepped up to 40 GW in 2024-25. He also said 50 GW of RE projects would be put up for bidding annually from this year onwards. India’s commitments towards climate action in the Panchamrit Statement as a 5-point agenda makes Energy Transition as the most important pillar for the country’s climate action plan. The launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission has also given a boost to the efforts and initiatives of the stakeholders towards green transition. FICCI has organised a 2nd Edition of India Energy Transition with a special focus on development of an enabling Green Hydrogen ecosystem in the country, while simultaneously also highlighting solar and wind energy, international collaborations, pumped storage and battery energy storage, financing and capacity augmentation.

MAKE IN INDIA
MAKE IN INDIA
As world economies restart their engines in a bid to regain lost ground due to the Covid-19 pandemic, India too shows signs of economic buoyancy and promise. India’s Make in India initiative holds a key to the global economic revival, something that should interest Australian government ministries, corporate sector, entrepreneurs, institutions seeking R&D collaborations and Australia Inc in general, among others. India assumes greater importance as several major world economies including American, Japanese, German, British and South Korean look to move out and diversify their businesses from China. India has jumped to 63rd rank in the World Bank’s Ease of Development 2020 report, and has also been ranked as the 9th largest recipient of Foreign Direct Investment destinations in 2019 by the World Investment Report 2020 of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Micron’s Rs 22,500 cr plant to set a benchmark for India’s chip India begins chip journey in just 15 months, journey: Ashwini Vaishnaw
Micron a beacon to all investors: MoS IT manufacturing, he said that in 2014, the country had zero mobile export and today, we are exporting Apple and Samsung smartphones’ worth Rs 1 lakh crore.
New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) In just 15 months’ time, India has seen the construction of its first-ever semiconductor plant, received more manufacturing proposals along with 8 chip designing startups now operational in the country, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, said on Monday. Speaking to IANS, the Minister said that semiconductor manufacturing -- which is at the frontier of engineering and science/technology and a very high-level area -- opportunities in the country are now immense and investments in this field will go to states that respond fast while creating an enabling environment, infrastructure and policies. Giving an example of mobile
“The sheer transformation in the electronics sector is the reason our Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in India becoming a semiconductor nation,” said Chandrasekhar. In 2014, the country used to import 82 per cent mobile phones and now, 100 per cent smartphones are being manufactured/assembled here. “Similarly, in the near future, we will see more positive data on semiconductors as we begin the journey with the Micron plant. I have no doubt that the state-of-the-art plant in Sanand, Gujarat, will become a beacon to all investors, manufacturers and participants in the global semiconductor ecosystem,” Chandrasekhar told IANS. New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday urged the country’s engineers to consider the German model of specialisation and certification in specific areas in order to accelerate growth in innovation. Addressing the technocrats on Engineers Day, the minister pointed out that India's National Education Policy, introduced in 2020, has opened doors for lateral changes in education, allowing students to explore diverse fields midstream. “This flexibility will lead to a more skilled and diverse workforce,” he observed.

The Minister said that the government would then explore reciprocal actions based on this research study to ensure a level playing field for Indian engineers and businesses. He exhorted the engineering community to achieve the USD100 billion export target in engineering services, design, construction, and R&D by 2030. Addressing the ‘Global Services Export Conclave on Design, Engineering, Construction, R&D and Environmental Services: Sustainable Energy, Transportation, and Infrastructure', Goyal highlighted India's growing global stature,
The Micron plant at Sanand will work as a foundational industry, in order to create such foundational industries across the country, the minister emphasised.
They've built more than a million NAVIC IC chips using advanced 28-nanometer technology. The government will soon make it a “standard practice that all devices using GPS technology should have NAVIC-powered chipsets or NAVIC chips inside”. “When you look at the IT PLI scheme this time, it includes incentives for system designers and manufacturers who incorporate Indian-designed chips into their products,” said Chandrasekhar. The first India-made chip from the Rs 22,500 crore Micron plant is likely to arrive in December 2024. The Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) of the company is being set up on 93 acres in Sanand GIDC-II industrial estate and is expected to be commissioned within 18 months. The facility will focus on transforming wafers into Ball Grid Array (BGA) – integrated circuit packages, memory modules and solid-state drives.

Sanand (Gujarat), Sep 23 (IANS) Global chip manufacturers have realised India’s potential and US-based Micron Technology breaking grounds for its Rs 22,500 crore facility here will set a benchmark for our semiconductor journey, Union IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told IANS on Saturday. Saying that the first 'Make in India' chip from Micron’s plant is most likely to come in December 2024, the minister said the pace at which Micron kicked off work on the Sanand project is highly commendable. "This plant sets a major milestone for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a semiconductor hub — the way the country has achieved in sectors like mobile, electronics, defense,
He urged Indian companies to expand globally, capturing new markets and leveraging India's abundant talent pool of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) graduates to become leading global companies in their sectors. Regarding India's stance on global trade, Goyal emphasised the country's commitment to fair and balanced Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. He emphasised that India's approach involves extensive consultations with stakeholders to ensure equitable deals that benefit the nation's businesses, professionals, and MSMEs. The aim is to enter into an FTA which is a win-win for both countries, he added.

According to the minister, the government has also received a couple of more semiconductor manufacturing proposals and an announcement will be made soon. "Chips today are an integral part of our lives. The semiconductor manufacturing is also going to help the IT hardware PLI 2.0 in a very big way because this PLI has special incentives for chips which are manufactured in India," Vaishnaw told IANS.

Gandhinagar, Sep 27 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said Vibrant Gujarat is not a branding but a bonding event linked to "me and capabilities of the seven crore people of the state". The Prime Minister made the remark while addressing the event to commemorate two decades of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. He said, "I remember in 2009 everyone asked me to not hold the summit as there was a global slowdown. But I refused and said at the worst, the summit would not be successful."The journey of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit began on September 28, 2003, under the visionary leadership of the then Chief Minister, Narendra Modi. From its humble beginnings with 300 international participants
in its debut year, the summit flourished exponentially, hosting thousands of delegates from more than 135 nations in 2019. Modi took to Twitter to write, “Marking two decades of fostering business, innovation and growth! At 10 AM, will be joining the programme to mark 20 years of the @VibrantGujarat. Summit, which is a testament to Gujarat’s unwavering commitment to economic development. Over the years, the Summits have brought together key stakeholders across sectors, furthered growth and most importantly, created opportunities for several youngsters of Gujarat.” The summit's trajectory over the last 20 years traces its evolution from being a platform focusing on making Gujarat as the preferred investment destination to one that aspires to shape a new India. On Tuesday, Modi addressed a gathering of women leaders and members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at GUJSAIL building compound at Ahmedabad Airport, soon after his arrival here on two days Gujarat visit.

SL to propose strategic tax incentives in 114 dead, over 200 2024 budget to attract foreign investors
Colombo, Sep 25 (IANS) The Sri Lankan government will propose special tax breaks and concessions in the 2024 budget to attract large-scale foreign direct investors in information technology and vehicle assembly, state media reported on Monday.
Investment Promotion State Minister Dilum Amunugama was quoted as saying that the government will introduce a strategic tax policy, including tax breaks for up to a period of two to five years for investors in the IT sector, reports Xinhua news agency citing the state media. Amunugama said the proposals are being prepared by the Finance Ministry.
He said with these schemes, Sri Lanka plans to encourage investors to invest more than $50 million. Despite the economic crisis, the Board of Investment has been able to attract foreign direct investments of $1.75 billion exceeding the targeted amount of $1 billion for 2022, and the target for this year is $1.5 billion, Amunugama told a press conference in July.
Canadian leaders hailing Nazi as ‘hero’ shows how easily they are manipulated Hunka lives in Rota’s constituency and the Speaker was roped in by supporters of the Nazis, showing how easy it is to get Canadian leaders to back questionable causes and dubious personalities in exchange for votes or other forms of support. New York, Sept 26 (IANS) The spectacle of Canadian leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Parliament Speaker Anthony Rota, hailing a Nazi who served with the evil SS that was involved in genocide and war crimes is the latest example of how politicians in that country are manipulated. Last week, Yaroslav Hunka, who fought for the Nazis as a member of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, was called a hero by Rota, who thanked him “for all his service” and Trudeau joined in the standing ovation for him in Parliament. The tribute to a Nazi by Canadian leaders, who claim to champion human rights, would have passed off as just a service to a particular Canadian group except that they were caught out when Jewish groups exposed the real past of the 98-year-old Nazi soldier. After Hunka's past became public, Trudeau on Monday shamefacedly apologised for honouring a Nazi saying: “This is something that is deeply embarrassing to the Parliament of Canada and by extension to all Canadians."
The incident illustrates the easy manipulation of politicians by vested interests – especially those with foreign linkages – and how readily they go along for easy political gains, regardless of their public stance. After his praise of the Nazi was exposed, Rota told Parliament: "I am deeply sorry I offended many with my gestures and remarks. I have subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to do so." After Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky had addressed Parliament on September 22, Rota pointed to Hunka, who was in the public gallery and said: “He is a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero and we thank him for all his service”. Zelensky, who was unaware of Hunka’s war record, was trapped unawares in the pro-Nazi frenzy at Canada's parliament that is forever passing judgments on other countries and preaching human rights and he joined in the ovation, giving a fist bump. Rota said: “I wish to make clear that no one, including fellow
parliamentarians and the Ukraine delegation, was aware of my intention or of my remarks before I delivered them." The speaker had said while introducing Hunka, that he is “a Ukrainian Canadian war veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians”. The incident played into Ruassia’s accusations that Ukraine is run by neo-Nazis, even though Zelensky is himself Jewish. Kremlin’s Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed outrage about the Canadian honour and said: "Many Western countries, including Canada, have raised a young generation that does not know who fought whom or what happened during the Second World War." Canada has given refuge to members of the Nazi forces, which had carried out the horrific genocide of 6 million Jewish people.

Baghdad, Sep 27 (IANS) At least 114 people were killed and more than 200 injured after a massive fire ripped through a wedding hall in Iraq's Nineveh province, a top official announced on Wednesday. The updated figures were confirmed to the media by Nineveh Governor Najm alJubouri, reports Xinhua news agency. The fire broke out on Tuesday night in the al-Haytham Wedding Hall in al-Hamdaniya town, 35 km southeast of the provincial capital Mosul, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) quoted the Iraqi Civil Defence as saying. It said that initial reports indicated that fireworks were used during the celebration, which may have caused the fire. The building was covered with highly flammable materials, which accelerated the blaze that led to the collapse of part of the building, the INA said, adding that

Washington, Sep 27 (IANS) US President Joe Biden's twoyear-old German Shepherd, Commander, bit another Secret Service agent at the White House -- the 11th known biting incident involving the pet dog, the media reported “Yesterday (Monday) around 8 p.m., a Secret Service Uniformed Division police officer came in contact with a First Family pet and was bitten. The officer was treated by medical personnel on complex,” USSS chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi told CNN on Tuesday. The injured officer spoke with Secret Service Uniformed Division Chief Alfonso M. Dyson Sr. on Tuesday and "is doing OK",

Swedish PM summons army chief amid surge in gang violence
Stockholm, Sep 29 (IANS) Amid a spike in the number of gang killings across Sweden, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has summoned the Army chief to help curb the violence. In a televised address to the nation on Thursday, he said Sweden had not seen anything like it before and that "no other country in Europe" was experiencing this kind of situation, reports the BBC. So far this month, 12 people have been killed in gang violence -- the highest number since December 2019, according to Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Army chief Micael Byden and the Prime Minister are scheduled to meet the country's police chief on Friday to discuss what role the military could play to curb the violence. The Prime Minister's announcement came after about 12 hours during which two men were shot dead in Stockholm and a 25-year-old woman killed in a blast at home in a town north of the capital. "We will hunt the gangs down and we will defeat them," the BBC quoted Kristerssonas saying in his address, stressing that children and innocent bystanders were increasingly being caught up in the nationwide violence . Kim also stressed the need to "exponentially" bolster the country's nuclear arsenal and diversify its nuclear strike capability as well as deployment with different branches and units of the armed forces. Seoul, Sep 28 (IANS) North Korea has stipulated the policy of strengthening its nuclear force in the constitution at a key parliamentary meeting, as leader Kim Jong-un said trilateral security cooperation between South Korea, the US, and Japan poses "the worst actual threat", state media reported on Thursday. The decision was made at the ninth session of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) held on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Kim's attendance, according to
the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). At the session, the North unanimously decided to "supplement Article 58 of Chapter 4 of the Socialist Constitution" to ensure the country's right to existence and development, deter war and protect regional and global peace by rapidly developing nuclear weapons to a higher level, Kim said. At an SPA meeting in September last year, North Korea enacted a new nuclear law authorizing the preemptive use of nuclear arms,
He also vowed to strengthen solidarity with countries standing against the US. His message came as North Korea has been seeking to bolster its ties with China and Russia vis-a-vis the strengthening of security cooperation among Seoul, Washington and Tokyo. From the editor’s desk Why the West ignores India’s genuine concerns When the Canadian Prime Minister was leveling allegations against India in his country’s Parliament on September 18 that Canadian security agencies had been actively pursuing “credible allegations of a potential link” over India's involvement in the killing of Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh, in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, he was perhaps not thinking prudently or was not given the right sort of advice. Even if the Five Eyes intelligence points a finger at India with the allegation that it was involved in the killing of the Canadian Sikh Nijjar, the Canadian government needed to exercise utmost caution and allowed investigations to conclude before announcing in the Parliament of India’s involvement. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has categorically denied any Indian involvement, saying this is not the government of India’s policy. So in a global international order, countries need to talk to each other, more than before, to address issues of mutual concern. As it stands now, there is hitherto, no direct proof of India’s involvement in the killing of the Canadian Sikh Nijjar. In fact, the CCTV footage near the Gurudwara where he was killed, shows that the murder was much more complex and well-coordinated than was being thought of. Nijjar’s killing might have been spared if the requests of the Indian government to the government of Canada to rein in the Khalistani supporters and the Khalistan propaganda in Canada were given due attention by the Canadian government. There are gangsters operating in Canada without any fear of being caught by the authorities concerned. They have a history of gang wars, and one of the gangs might have killed Nijjar, as the gang rivalry in Canada is very complex to understand. The Khalistani supporters in Canada, in the guise of a political movement, seem to be a part of the flourishing gang rivalry in the country that has surprisingly been allowed to run riot. But there are two significant issues here. First, why do the Western countries ignore India’s concerns? Initially, it was the case of terrorism in India, which was brushed under the carpet by the US and some European countries unless 9/11 happened in the US, and later 26/11 happened in India. When the West became a victim of Islamic terrorism of various denominations, they began to listen to the woes of India related to the risks terrorism posed to the world at large. In the case of Khalistani supporters, who are spread out

Joint action plan key to tackling challenges in Indo-Pacific and inclusive Indo-Pacific region that follows rules-based world order. This is important for a stable and peaceful IndoPacific. The dignitaries, quite rightly, focused on the aspect of diversity in the Indo-Pacific. This diversity, they reckoned, is at many levels, and therefore there was a consensus to work towards a collaborative effort to address the challenges faced in the region. Insofar as concrete takeaways are concerned, what did IPACC achieve?
almost throughout the world, aspiring to carve out a sovereign state for themselves by separating Punjab from the Indian Union, it is pertinent to say that most of them have no real connection and compassion for their friends and relatives in reality. A handful of misguided elements, under the influence of foreign hands, are for secessionist activities against India. But these elements also pose a threat to other Indians living in Canada, even going to the extent of threatening Indian diplomats and consular officials. The West completely ignores India’s genuine grievance against Khalistan supporters in different countries, who from time-to-time show disrespect to the Indian nation and its symbols such as India’s national flag. The first reason why the West does not listen to India in matters of threats from Khalistan supporters is because these elements have not threatened the countries of the West directly. So the West is unsympathetic to India’s concerns. The second reason is that the West regards the Khalistani elements as very small in size, and therefore, according to their perception, unable to cause any real harm to any country. What the West overlooks is that these elements may be playing in the hands of both foreign state and non-state actors, who may use them to foment violence in India, and other places where Indians live. The third reason is that there are countries that would rather see a weak India than a strong and resilient one. India’s rise internationally, both in economic terms and in diplomacy, is not appreciated by all countries. Only a weak India that will toe the line of these countries will be acceptable. Then there are domestic political compulsions that force authorities in a certain country to support even extremist elements in their country, though they may be harming another country. There is also a trend to allow secessionist activities against one nation to flourish in another country just in the name of freedom of speech and expression. Though it is also true that no civilized country would allow its citizens to enjoy unrestricted freedom, where conditions of ‘reasonable restrictions’ apply in a bid not to let any right of its citizens become an absolute one. Therefore, the West, led by the US, must exercise utmost caution by not allowing any state or non-state actors the liberty to act against the sovereignty of any nation in the name of freedom in a democracy.
EDITORIAL
The current world order economically, politically, and militarily is volatile and calls for alliances and agreements. The two world wars, followed by a highly-tensed era of Cold War, which saw localized wars and situations that could potentially lead to wars, have taught countries not to remain isolated insofar as defence matters are concerned. India has also tasted four wars, and it knows how it is when a country is left to fend for itself in the face of a war which may have been thrust upon it. And it is not just about real wars alone. Every country has to be war-ready in the modern era, and strategize with solid planning to deal a heavy blow to the morale of the enemy if the need arises. Therefore, there has to be a relentless effort to increase a country’s influence in strategic locations, and in modern times it is best done through joint action plans and forging alliances with other countries. In this regard, the Indo-Pacific region is of great significance, especially keeping in mind China’s interest and its aggressive posture in the region. China’s ambition to be present in strategic areas globally to establish itself as a global superpower is now apparent. The Chinese plan of action to thwart attempts to build any other power center or a collective power center of countries in the Indo-Pacific region is hurting the interests of many countries. Basically, the Indo-Pacific region is inhabited by some of the world’s most populous countries, which are characterized by highly dynamic countries that include Australia, India, Japan, China and Indonesia.

The presence of such economic and political ‘heavy weights’ makes this region a vital center of international geopolitics. All of these countries would like to see their footprints expand globally in terms of economic, political and their concomitant military might; but for that to happen, these countries need to have a strong presence in the Indo-Pacific region. Therefore, the recently concluded Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs Conference (IPACC) assumes significance. The Indo-Pacific Armies Chiefs Conference (IPACC), which was organized by the Indian army with the US Army as the co-host, saw the 30 participating countries realizing the importance of and agreeing “to work towards a collaborative effort to address the challenges faced in the region.” Why would these countries reach an agreement to collaborate with a view to addressing the challenges in the region? A rising world power in the form of China is difficult to contain unless countries with collective interest in the region come together. China continues to show its aggressive intent in the Indo-Pacific. If China is able to establish its hegemony in the region, countries associated with this region will have to forget about a fair order that works for the benefit of all nations in this region. So the army chiefs and heads of delegations from 30 countries came together. The Conference offered a democratic platform to the army chiefs and heads of delegations to hold free and frank talks related to the need for an open
The Conference achieved what the participating countries had already envisioned earlier. For instance, the concrete outcomes of the event related to evolving a shared vision for military cooperation, fostering a sense of collective responsibility, sharing best practices, appreciating areas and communities vulnerable to climate change, synergizing approach to disaster relief, increasing military exchange endeavours, progressing defence diplomacy initiatives and reinforcing the importance of open and sustained dialogue. All these outcomes would pave the way for jointly addressing issues that impact the Indo-Pacific countries. This is how collective potentialities are gathered for collective benefits in the form of security and well-being of the participating nations, as also the security and well-being of other nations, who may not be directly linked with this region, but are impacted by what happens here. IPACC also provided an opportunity for the participants to benefit from exchange of ideas and views on security and other contemporary issues of mutual interest. . The fact that the Indo-Pacific Armies’ Management Seminar (IPAMS) was also conducted during the IPACC event on such significant themes as “Partnering for Sustainable Peace and Security in the Indo-Pacific”, “Cooperation to Enhance Interoperability”, and “Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR)Evolving Mechanisms for Crises Response'' shows the commitment and eagerness of the participating countries to focus on contemporary areas of mutual interest, with the emerging message that the countries need to work together to boost collective responses. Moreover, in a globalized world, nations understand the value of joining hands together in matters of resource mobilization and cooperation. This is to ensure they have the benefit of robust defence and security arrangements, which are significant for the overall development and progress of a country. In that context IPACC has a big role to play.

The cherry on top was the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, which was adopted unanimously at the summit. However, Prime Minister Modi as a leader of the Global South and keeping in mind India’s strategic and regional priorities, in spite of his heavy commitment to the G20 Summit, undertook a whirlwind tour of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, in order to attend the ASEAN and East Asia Summit. This shows the priorities of the
Let’s take a look at the reasons for Modi to fly to Jakarta to participate at these two events. In fact, India is evolving into a strategic actor in Southeast Asia.
Over the years, India has signed an arms deal with Vietnam, stood with Philippines over China on sovereignty disputes in the South China Sea, and has increased defence cooperation with Indonesia. The manner it has managed the balance-of-power politics in the region is a classic model of diplomacy. Basically, China's aggressive posture in and around the South China Sea is driving India and its partners in the region together. Though these bilateral and multilateral relationships have
These moves are clearly designed to cooperate with Southeast Asian partners, who besides supporting the international rules-based international order insist on regional norms of behaviour in the face of rising Chinese assertiveness in the region. Currently, India and Vietnam enjoy a “comprehensive strategic partnership” after Modi visited Vietnam in 2016. In contrast, the US is only a “comprehensive partner” for Vietnam, two levels below India's status. Washington has struggled to raise the partnership and President Joe Biden’s recent visit to Vietnam was part of this endeavour. The Philippines, an old and US’s treaty ally, has also expanded security partnership with India. Late last month, Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo visited New Delhi and met with his Indian counterpart Jaishankar. For the first time, India recognised the legitimacy of the 2016 arbitration ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in favour of Philippine sovereignty claims over China in the South China Sea. India has also remained committed to evolve a security partnership with Indonesia. IndoIndonesian defence relations got
Nepal-China statement has ‘implications’ for Tibet where he or she might be tortured or face persecution.
Dharamsala, Sep 27 (IANS) The joint statement issued by Nepal and China in Beijing following the visit by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal institutionally strengthens China’s hand on matters relating to Tibet and Tibetans, the International Campaign for Tibet said on Wednesday. The Campaign's President Tencho Gyatso said: “Nepal is bound by international law to respect the principle of non-refoulement, which precludes states from returning a person to a place
www.indianews.com.au
“The principle of nonrefoulement is included in several treaties signed and ratified by Nepal, such as the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (Article 3), General Comment No. 20 of the Human Rights Committee and General Comment No. 6 of the Committee on the Rights of the Child.” Of the 13 points in the joint statement, four have direct references to Tibetan affairs and encompass politics, boundary management, health and infrastructural issues. Politically, the joint statement says: “The Nepali side reiterated that Tibet affairs are China’s internal affairs, that it will never allow any separatist activities
against China on Nepal’s soil.” Although the fundamentals have not changed, this formulation separates Tibet from Taiwan as well as the One China Principle, unlike two earlier joint statements in 2019 (when President Xi Jinping visited Nepal) and 2018 (when then Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli visited China), which said: “The Nepali side reiterated its firm commitment to the one-China policy with Tibet and Taiwan affairs as being China’s internal affairs, and the determination on not allowing any anti-China activities on its soil.” The joint statement refers to implementation of an agreement on boundary management, raising concerns not only about the plight of Tibetans who are trying to flee via Nepal, but also the possible deportation of those

a boost in 2018, when Modi visited Jakarta and elevated relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The two nations also initiated a new naval exercise, Samudra Shakti, which incorporated a warfighting component. In addition the two countries are exploring potential air force cooperation as well. Indonesia may also follow in the footsteps of the Philippines by purchasing BrahMos missiles. India is also cooperating with Malaysia, on the basis of an enhanced strategic partnership signed in 2015. Although Kuala Lumpur's decision earlier this year to cancel a deal to purchase Indian-made Tejas fighter aircraft may have dampened the partnership somewhat, the intent clearly remains to strengthen ties in line with upholding the mutual goal of maintaining the rulesbased international order in the region - especially internationally recognised maritime borders and freedom of navigation, neither of which Beijing accepts. Brunei is another emerging partner for India along the South China Sea. In 2021, the two nations renewed their defence agreement for five years, and they regularly engage in joint exercises, port visits by navy and coast guard ships, and official defence exchanges. India's strategic partnerships with Singapore and Thailand are also close and longstanding. Singapore regularly engages in bilateral exercises, high-level dialogues, visits, and professional training with India. Modi visited Singapore twice in 2018, and on the first trip, he signed 35 memoranda of understanding agreements on a range of security and economic issues. In 2022, India and Thailand renewed their partnership and pledged to elevate defence engagements further, to include cybersecurity. Perhaps of greater importance is the economic side of their relationship. In a nod to who have already entered Nepal. The “agreement between the government of the People’s Republic of China and the government of Nepal on the boundary management system”,which the joint statement now says the “two sides agreed to bring into force…as soon as possible”, provides the Chinese authorities additional avenues to get Tibetans deported from Nepal to Tibet. According to the text of the agreement that ICT has seen, Articles 26 and 27 of the agreement deal with “persons crossing the border illegally”. Article 26.2 reads: “The boundary representatives or competent authorities of both sides shall investigate the cases of persons found while crossing (the) border illegally, ascertain their identities, cross border facts and reasons as soon as possible and hand them over to the side where they stayed
SPECIAL FEATURES New Delhi's original Look East policy, Bangkok implemented its own Look West policy in 1997, in part to tap into the enormous Indian market. Moreover, Thailand and India are partnering with Myanmar to construct the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway that will significantly upgrade transport links between Southeast Asia and South Asia. Once the highway is completed, Modi and his government also want to add connections to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam - another clear rival to China's BRI. India further has good relations with both Cambodia and Laos. In May, Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni visited India, and the two sides reaffirmed “the strong civilisational bond” between the two nations. Phnom Penh and New Delhi cooperate on a range of socioeconomic projects, de-mining, water conservation, and heritage protection. India's engagement with Laos is less robust, but nevertheless, New Delhi and Vientiane are likely discussing ways to boost economic ties. This is all the more remarkable as both Phnom Penh and Vientiane are widely considered to be firmly in China's camp. Overall, India's proactive Act East policy is also a net positive for the US' Indo-Pacific strategy aimed at countering China. To provide a further impetus to New Delhi to do even more, the US should also help India in its infrastructure and developmental projects, as well as trade deals, which could help lessen Beijing's economic dominance of Southeast Asia. However, New Delhi's policy of practical outreach to Southeast Asia - even if it were sustained only at current levels - would help further undermine Beijing. before crossing the border within seven days from the day when they were detained.” In recent years, the number of Tibetans able to escape from Tibet through Nepal has been dwindling due to China’s heightened security in border areas, as well as its general clampdown in Tibet. From the 1980s until 2008, there was a steady flow of 2,500 to 3,500 Tibetans escaping into exile via Nepal annually. The flow of refugees from Tibet dropped dramatically in the wake of the party’s response to the pan-Tibet protests in spring 2008. In 2008, the number of refugees from Tibet dropped to 588 from 2,338 in 2007. After a gradual climb up to 753 in 2011, the number of refugees dropped by 50 per cent to 375 in 2012, the year Xi assumed leadership.

Residential real estate: ‘Silicon Valley’ Bengaluru emerges as major investment destination for NRIs NRIs, combined with an array of enticing incentives, have fostered an investment-friendly environment."
Bengaluru, Sep 17 (IANS) India's IT capital Bengaluru has evolved as the major investment destination for NRI investors in residential real estate. Real estate industry pundits are claiming that 2023 is going to be a remarkable year in connection with NRI investments as the slew of infrastructure projects, new IT corridors emerging in the city and conducive atmosphere in terms of peace, law and order situation in Bengaluru, and cosmopolitan outlook are also contributing to the trend. Sources say that NRIs from Asian regions, from countries like Singapore and from the Middle East, are also making huge investments apart from those in the US. The trend is catching up as NRIs in the Middle East and Singapore want to come back to India and settle down here. Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune are preferred destinations for investments in the real estate sector, say trade experts. Talking to IANS, BCD Group MD Angad Bedi said: "As we observe the increase in NRI investment in India and particularly in Bengaluru, 2023 is destined to be a remarkable year, with expected investments reaching an astounding $80 billion by the year's end, a remarkable increase from the $65 billion invested in the previous year. "First, India's economy is growing steadily, providing a fertile environment for NRIs to capitalise on emerging opportunities. Secondly, the proactive measures taken by the Indian government to facilitate investment opportunities for
"The recent appreciation of the rupee has increased the appeal of Indian assets to non-resident Indians with Bengaluru and Mumbai, the biggest markets with a combined 42 per cent share of the H1 2023 sales. Bengaluru is witnessing huge interest from UHNIs and NRIs with the residential prices in the city experiencing the highest increase of around 11-12 per cent y-o-y in the first half of this year as compared to the 6-9 per cent price rise in major cities during the period," he added. Cornerstone Group CEO Captain K. Srinivas told IANS that, the country’s real GDP growth witnessed a yoy growth of 6.1 per cent as of March 2023 and is expected to reach 6.5 per cent by FY24. This economic resilience is creating a favourable condition for the NRIs to foresee a bright future where they can not only multiply their investments multifold, but also get long term value appreciation. The case in point is the country’s real estate sector where a lot of NRIs are infusing their cash flows due to the sector’s phenomenal growth story, especially in Bengaluru, he added. This positive investment sentiment can be witnessed across all asset classes as NRIs are equally enthusiastic about the country’s luxury residential segment that is growing exponentially, as well as the CRE segment, he said. "Apart from the existing office REITs, Q2-23 saw the launch of India’s maiden retail REIT ‘Nexus Select Trust’ and it raised Rs 32 billion from its share sale in May 2023. A lot of NRI investors are actively eyeing on these developments as they see great potential in the market.
Property First founder and MD Bhavesh Kothari said: "The country’s GDP is expected to reach 6.5 per cent by FY24. These robust economic conditions have created and continue to create favourable conditions for the NRIs to invest in real estate as they can multiply their investments, benefit from land appreciation value and envision a promising future. This has led to increased investments, especially in highgrowth markets like Bengaluru where the luxury residential segment and CRE segments are in high demand." In Bengaluru, the investment inflow is quite optimistic as the city and its various sub-markets are witnessing large-scale infrastructural growth and the emergence of new IT corridors, especially in the north suburban areas and areas like Sarjapur, that witnessed some massive land deals in the last 2 years, Kothari added. Being the IT nerve centre of India and a global tech city, Bengaluru is also attracting NRI investors who are investing in the growing co-working segment and the traditional Grade A office spaces, on the back of continued demand from global MNCs and enterprises, he added.

"At present, almost 80 per cent of our supplies to the digital ecosystem come from imports and only 8-10 per cent of our supply requirement comes from India. We want to make that 65-70 per cent in the next three years," the minister told journalists.
Senior officials also point out that India’s trade deficit with China has soared to unsustainable levels and in any case there is a need to reduce imports from the Asian neighbour. The government has already announced a clamp down on imports and has given a transition period of about three months till October31, before a new licensing regime for imports of laptops, tablets and personal computers comes into effect. The government has issued a notification that import consignments can be cleared till October 31 without a licence and a government permit would be required for clearance of import from November.
Close to 40 companies, including global giants such as HP and Dell, have applied under the IT hardware PLI (productivity linked incentive) scheme for setting up factories to manufacture personal computers, laptops, tablets, servers and other equipment. The value works out to around Rs 4.65 lakh crore during the scheme period. The restrictions that are being introduced on imports are

New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS) The Directorate General of GST Intelligence has asked India’s largest casino chain Delta Corp to pay an alleged liability of Rs 11,139 crore. Delta Corp received an intimation for payment of shortfall tax under Section 74(5) of the CGST Act, 2017 and Goa SGST Act, 2017 from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence, Hyderabad, on Friday. The DG notice advises the company to pay an alleged tax liability of Rs 11,139 crore along with interest and penalty for the period from July 2017 to March 2022, failing which a show-cause notice will be issued to the company under Section 74(1) of the CGST Act, 2017 and Goa SGST Act, 2017.

Contribution from Hindu faith leader to Statement from the Soul - The Moral Case for the Uluru Statement from the Heart conducted by the Aboriginal elders whose traditional totem is the Emu (Nurinj), welcomed Prakruthi as their traditional family member that marked as an acceptance of Prakruthi into Gunggari women circle.
Prakruthi Mysore Gururaj, being an Indian migrant, has secured a significant spot in the history of Australia by contributing an essay from the Hindu faith along with 12 other national contributors from different faiths and three international contributors in the groundbreaking book Statement from the Soul - The Moral Case for the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The book initiated by Macquarie Law School, Macquarie University and published by La Trobe University press in conjunction

with Blank Ink was launched by The Honourable T.F. Bathurst AC KC FRSN, Former Chief Justice of New South Wales at The Great Synagogue, Sydney. Prakruthi says, "It's not what you got, it’s what you give!" She feels greatly honoured and privileged to be an advocate from the Hindu faith for The Uluru Statement from the Heart and arguing for a First Nation voice to be enshrined in the Australian Constitution and receiving Constitutional recognition. It all started when Shireen Morris, the author of the book, came across an article ‘Spiritual integration of two ancient Nations Australia and India’ published by
‘Hindu Council of Australia’ and called Prakruthi to understand in detail what the article was all about and rest was history. It was about a remarkable moment of connecting and integrating two ancient Nations Australia and India at a spiritual level that holds lots of similarities in their culture and traditions. Prakruthi believes that every human has a purpose for being born on this Earth. Little did she know hailing from city of Mysore, South India, she would find her connection in this far away land Australia where her spiritual sisters Aunty Peggy Tidyman and Aunty Cathy would welcome her into the Gunggari Women Circle by naming her Bua Bua (Butterfly lady). This sacred ceremony

This amazing spiritual journey started when the Gunggari elders felt the spiritual connection with Prakruthi who resembled one of their family members. Once this was expressed in Dec 2020, the ceremony day was decided to be on 20th March 2021 during Harmony Day celebration by Fiji Senior Citizens Association of Queensland Inc. It took Prakruthi months to prepare from familiarising the Gunggari values, hand painting the clothes and to learn the traditional dance. Prakruthi shares her experience and thoroughly enjoyed every moment as she got to explore many more commonalities between Indian and Indigenous Australian culture and traditions. Before this, Djandi Lee Merenda, granddaughter of Aunty Peggy Tidyman, was welcomed and accepted into Women’s
Ceremonial Circle in 2015 which was the first Gunggari women’s ceremony held on country in over 70+years. Six years after Djandi Lee Merendawas welcomed by descent, Prakruthi Mysore Gururaj was welcomed which is 76 + years based on spiritual connection. This is a very rare occurrence that has happened in the history of Emu (Nurinj) traditional elders. Prakruthi shared that she likes to extend her heartfelt gratitude to Shireen Morris for this great opportunity to be part of this great movement, Damian Freeman for his co editing, Surendra Prasad- President of Fiji Senior Citizens Association Of QLD Inc for his support to conduct the official ceremony, Mr Vijay Singhal for his research information on 'Aboriginal Spirituality and Hindu Faith', Hindu Council Australia for their article, Elilarasi Sadayan for the assistance in writing this essay, Asha Patnam for her great hospitality in Sydney and a big thank you to her beautiful family and friends for their love, care, support and encouragement.

Why you need a non-partial agent: A homebuyer’s tale By Anna Khandhar Hey there, I'm Anna Khandhar, I recently helped a friend navigate the treacherous waters of home buying. It was a rollercoaster ride filled with frustrating twists and turns, but it taught us a valuable lesson: the importance of engaging a non-partial agent. I want to share this story with you because it could save you a ton of time and money. My friend had been on the hunt for their dream home for what felt like an eternity. For last 8 months, all their weekends were taken up in attending open homes and not getting anywhere. The journey was far from pleasant.
“So here's the deal: if
you're tired of spending weekends at open houses, feeling like you're losing hope and money, it's time to consider a non-partial agent like Lyra Homes” Sales agents seemed more interested in playing hard to get than in helping out. They wouldn't provide clear feedback on pricing, and sometimes they didn't even bother responding when offers were made. It was beyond frustrating, and my friend was about to throw in the towel. That's when my friend approached me. I knew that it was time to show them what a nonpartial agent can do. Through my company, Lyra Homes, I took charge and negotiated with the sales agents. We acted as professional mediators, making sure the offers were fair and that communication was crystal clear. It was a game-changer. No more running around in circles, no more waiting anxiously for agents to get back to us. We were in control. What's more, we handled all the nitty-gritty stuff— contract negotiations, building inspections, pest checks, and even liaising with solicitors. Trust me; these are things you don't want to mess up on your own. Having a pro by your side not only saves time but also prevents costly mistakes. Check out his Google Review below. So here's the deal: if you're tired of spending weekends at open houses, feeling like you're losing hope and money, it's time to consider a non-partial agent like Lyra Homes. One of the speakers, Queensland and Northern Territory’s Regional Director Charlie Shandil spoke about the story of his great grandfather, who came to Australia to become “more than a farmer”. “Settlement in this country in particular has a profound impact on individuals, children and future generations in your family. One thing that I have learnt from my family’s story is how important it is to be active and involved in the country that you live in whether you are a citizen or PR, it is critical that you play your role in this community,” Charlie said. Another speaker, Multicultural Australia CEO Christine Castley said they (Multicultural Australia) would like to engage more with community groups to understand

what people need information about and how (it is) to be shared from government and businesses to the people. “In the current environment, we have a lot of challenges around housing, where people have issues around the kind of house they can access, particularly for people newly arrived at basic pay. What you can access in terms of rent is very limited, so how people give us feedback is one way how we rate ourselves,” Christine said. Speaking on the occasion, Bhartiya Samaj Brisbane’s president Abhishek Sharma said it was challenging for him to find the correct information when he moved to Australia. “I struggled to find authentic information on various issues. For instance, in which location to rent or buy a house, in which school we should get our kids enrolled in, what banks to use, information about the loading fee on the health insurance cover, how to sponsor my dad who currently lives in India or be it something as simple as applying for a driver’s license, or even finding the
right electricity, gas, phone or internet provider. Those struggles led to the idea of organising Empowering Migrants. The key purpose is to provide accurate information with the help of subject-matter experts and raise awareness about the way of life in Australia,” he said. Bhartiya Samaj Brisbane’s vice president Kriti Bhardwaj said the organisation’s vision is to support diverse communities in Australia and its goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of people. “Empowering Migrants is a right step in this direction. It will truly empower migrants with the right information, knowledge and inspiration, easing their journey of settlement, success and growth in Australia,” Kriti said. Migrants play a crucial role in the economic and social fabric of Australia. Australia is currently growing by one million people every two years, making it among the fastest growing countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

He said, “This year we have had some fantastic success stories, including reuniting an overseas traveller with their bag and passport, as well as returning an extensive art portfolio to a university student which resulted in tears of joy.” He further said, “Where items can’t be returned, they do go to good causes. Any unclaimed money is donated to the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust, which supports our city’s grassroots

Clothing items that are in good condition are donated to charity, while glasses are donated to the Fred Hallows foundation. Any items that could potentially be sold, such as jewellery and books, are donated to Council’s Tip Shops for shoppers to find a bargain. Asian Games: Son lives up to his father’s prophecy as India wins historic gold in Team Dressage in equestrian tough event and very challenging and all four of us gave it our best to make it possible," said the 25-year-old rider from Pune. He said
Hangzhou, Sep 26 (IANS) A businessman with an interest in interiors, Vipul Chheda has no technical knowledge of equestrian sports or dressage competition. The only reason he follows horses and horse riders is that his son Hriday is an equestrian player and represents the country in the Asian Games in Hangzhou. That was the reason why he was at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport in Mumbai on September 20 night -- to board a flight to China to be in Ningbo and watch his son participate in the dressage competitions. "Mark my word, my son will win a medal in the Asian Games," said Vipul Chheda as he waited in the queue to get to the check-in counter. His prophecy came good and Hriday along with teammates Anush Agarwalla, Sudipti Hajela and Divyakriti Singh made history when they won the gold medal in the Dressage Team event -- the first-ever gold medal in Dressage and the first medal in Dressage in four decades. India had won a bronze medal in the Dressage Team event way back in 1982 when the sport made its Asian Games debut in New Delhi. "My father is an eternal optimist, He doesn't know much about the technicalities of Equestrian or of Dressage," Hriday told IANS on Tuesday after playing a key role in the team's golden triumph. "Like all parents, he always wants the best of me and that's why he must have said that. It was a very
Though his father may not know much about equestrian sport, Hriday says Vipul has been his most ardent supporter from the day he decided to take up equestrian as his profession. "My father has always supported me 100% from day one. Equestrian is a very costly sport and you can't do without support from your family. He never objected to me taking up riding, he has been interested in horses. It has been difficult for me, it needed a lot of hard work, to be in Europe, working with horses, learning dressage and competing in events there," said Hriday, who initially took up dressage and show jumping before shifting to the former. On their golden triumph on Tuesday, Hriday said all of them were confident of doing well and did their best from the first rider out in the morning. "We had our first rider out after 8 a.m. and after that, everyone just remained focused on doing our best. It is a huge achievement for all of us to win this medal after 42 years," he said. "Sudipti went out first and then Divyakriti followed by Anush and me. At 25, I am the oldest among them and I know how much handwork all four of us have put in," he said. Hriday seconded his teammates when they said that they were never in doubt about winning the medal but added that it was an incredibly tough challenge. All four of them will return to the Tonglu Equestrian Centre on Wednesday to compete in the Dressage Individual competition
in which they have qualified. Hriday is confident that they will win medals in Individual Dressage too.
Hangzhou, Sep 27 (IANS) Rhythm Sangwan, Manu Bhaker and Esha Singh came up with a superb performance to take gold in the Women's 25m Pistol Team competition while the team of Sift Kaur Samra, Ashi Chouksey and Mannini Kaushik claimed a silver medal in the Women's 50m Rifle 3-positions as India continued to reap rich rewards at the shooting ranges here at Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre on Wednesday. These were India's sixth and seventh medals from the

However, it was the Women's 25m Pistol Team that took the spotlight on Wednesday morning as the team of Manu, Rhythm and Esha continued from where they had left off at the end of the first phase on Tuesday and covered themselves in glory with a good performance in Rapid fire section. The Indians were already in the lead after the precision round on Tuesday. They finished with a combined score of 1759, finishing ahead of China, who had a score of 1756
Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre in the 19th Asian Games here on Wednesday. With a score of 469.6, Sift set a new World Record, a new Asian Games record and also the Asian Record to finish on the top in one of the most difficult of the shooting competitions as it tests the shooter's abilities in kneeling, prone and standing positions.
Hriday hoped that their gold medal would get more attention from the authorities for equestrian sports and it would get the support that it deserved.
He did not agree that dressage as an event was the most difficult of all equestrian events because of the high degree of coordination required between the rider and horse as they perform a series of predetermined movements, known as ‘figures’ or “movements” in an arena of 20x60 metres. In all competitions, the horse has to show the three paces: walk, trot and canter as well as smooth transitions within and between the 12 lettered markers placed symmetrically in the arena. "I would not like to go into which one is more difficult, all of them are tough. Dressage is a little bit more technical but others have their own challenges like if you make a mistake, you can fall off the horse," he said. The four riders must definitely be hoping that their victory in Hangzhou not only gets support for the sport from all quarters, it also inspires youngsters to take up equestrian sport.

More attention to equestrian sports
"Our federation (Equestrian Federation of India) has gone through a lot of turmoil recently (because of governance issues). I just hope that things will get better soon. I hope that we winning the first-ever gold in dressage and a medal in dressage after such a long gap will get equestrian support from all quarters. It is a very costly sport and players need all the support that they can get," said Hriday.
with Korea taking the bronze medal with a score of 1742. At the end of the first day of precision shooting, the Indians had a total of 887 as compared to 874 of the Chinese. On Wednesday, the Indians complied a score of 883 while the Chinese shot 882 as they gave the Indians a tough fight. In the end, the big advantage the Indians gained on the first day --especially in the opening series in which they bagged 292 points while the Chinese could manage only 288 -- of the two-day competition proved enough for them to claim the top spot and the gold medal. Earlier, it was the ball was set rolling in the Women's 50m Rifle 3-position by Sift, Ashi and Mannini who claimed a silver medal in the Team competition. Asian Games: It will be a different kind of challenge, says Neeraj Chopra lineup to take photographs and selfies with him. Earlier, Chopra was eager to get photos clicked with cricketers, treated as demigods in India. Now, even the cricketers are eager to get photos clicked with him as did the Indian men's cricket team in the Asian Games village in Hangzhou on Friday. Hangzhou, Sep 30 (IANS) Neeraj Chopra started his journey towards greatness in athletics at the Asian Games in 2018 in Jakarta. It was the year that Chopra won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and followed it up by bagging the gold at the Asian Games in Jakarta. As he returns to the Asian Games once again in the 19th edition at Hangzhou, life has totally transformed for the 25-yearold from Sonipat in Haryana. In his journey so far, Chopra has won the gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, won the Diamond League Final in 2022 and this year fulfilled his dream by winning the title in the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. So, as he gets ready to defend the Asian Games title that he won in Jakarta, a lot of other things have also changed for Chopra. "When I was participating in Jakarta, I had no pressure, nobody expected a lot from Games Village, do my stuff and enjoy myself," he said. Now Chopra carries the expectations of the entire nation, people expect him to win every time he steps up on the runway to throw his javelin, everyone in the athletics team looks up to him and people including other participating sportspersons
"Now the cricketers are also part of the Games like these. Last year the women's team played in the Commonwealth Games and now both the men's and women's teams are here in Hangzhou. There are attempts to make it part of the Olympics too. So, it feels nice to meet them here. I felt very good after meeting them yesterday. I have always said the athletes' village setup has a lot of positive effects on athletes. In the village, you will feel energised even if you have not had a good training session," said Neeraj Chopra during a press conference at the Athletes Village in Hangzhou on Saturday. Life certainly has come full circle for Neeraj Chopra. He has now become a global superstar in athletics. "Yes, it was a very good event for me, I had a good throw of 88.06. But things have changed a lot since then, I have fulfilled some of my dreams -- it was my dream to win an Olympic medal, which I did. Winning the World Championship was also a dream that I fulfilled," Chopra said. But Chopra says what he has learned throughout this journey is to remain humble, talk politely with everyone and take each day as it comes, be ready for the new challenges. Hardeep Puri launches hydrogen fuel cell powered bus, says domestic demand to increase by 4 times It is being planned to operate additional 15 fuel cell buses in the NCR region very shortly, he informed. New Delhi, September 25 (IANS) Hydrogen is deemed as the fuel for future with immense potential in helping India meet it’s decarbonisation targets and its global demand for hydrogen is expected to increase by four to seven times to 500-800 million tonnes by 2050, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday. The domestic demand is expected to increase by four times, from current 6 million tonnes at present to 25-28 MT by 2050, he added, informing that PSUs under the ministry shall be able to produce around 1 MMTPA of green hydrogen by 2030. Puri made the remarks while flagging off the first Green Hydrogen fuel cell bus in the national capital.
"This green hydrogen powered bus is going to transform the face of city transport in the country. I shall be closely monitoring the project and wish you all the very best for successfully executing this project of national importance," he said. Puri said that the ministry has taken pioneering initiatives in the sphere of green hydrogen and we are accelerating our efforts to produce and utilise green hydrogen in the refineries. Further, projects pertaining to hydrogen blending in natural gas pipelines, localisation of electrolyzer based technologies, promotion of bio-pathways for green hydrogen production are being pursued aggressively, Puri informed. Explaining the mechanism of the bus, he said that the fuel
Speaking to IANS, the Minister said that semiconductor manufacturing -- which is at the frontier of engineering and science/technology and a very high-level area -- opportunities in the country are now immense and investments in this field
Giving an example of mobile manufacturing, he said that in 2014, the country had zero mobile export and today, we are exporting Apple and Samsung smartphones’ worth Rs 1 lakh crore. I have no doubt that the
The fuel cells are highly efficient as compared to IC engines, the Minister informed further. The electrical efficiency of fuel cells is 55-60 per cent as compared to thermal efficiency of 25 per cent for conventional IC engines. These buses will have a high fuel economy of 12 km/kg of hydrogen as compared to 2.5-3 km/litre of diesel buses, Puri said. Additionally, the hydrogen fuelpowered vehicle can be refilled in a few minutes, nearly as fast as fossil fuel can fill an internal combustion engine.
state-of-the-art plant in Sanand, Gujarat, will become a beacon to all investors, manufacturers and participants in the global semiconductor ecosystem,” Chandrasekhar told IANS. The chip for ISRO-created GPS navigation system called NavIC -now part of Apple iPhone 15 Pro series -- has been designed by Bengaluru-based Accord Software and Systems.

The robot has the same artificial intelligence (AI) software and sensors present in Tesla's advanced driver assistance system called 'Autopilot' and it may cost around $20,000. The humanoid robot is made for mass production in the "millions" of units. New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) Elon Musk on Monday showcased the Tesla humanoid robot called 'Optimus' who greeted his followers with a 'Namaste', while performing a couple of Yoga postures comfortably. Showcased for the first time during 'Tesla AI Day' 2022 in October, Optimus was seen performing simple tasks this time in a video posted by the X owner. Optimus is now capable of selfcalibrating its arms and legs. Using only vision and joint position encoders, the robot can precisely locate its limbs in space It learns its tasks smoothly, like sorting and unsorting colouredblocks, and its neural net runs entirely on-board, using only vision. Tech salaries in US decline amid recordbreaking inflation, market turbulence Amid the rise of generative AI and tightening of corporate budgets, junior talent (those with less than four years of experience) have experienced the most significant decrease in salaries – nearly 5 per cent year-over-year. San Francisco, Sep 24 (IANS) Following a year of recordbreaking inflation and market turbulence, local tech salaries in the US, including those for fully in-person or hybrid roles, have experienced their most significant year-over-year decline, dropping 3 per cent from $161,000 to $156,000, a new report has revealed. When adjusting for inflation, the data by AI-driven marketplace Hired revealed a staggering story -- local US salaries have plummeted to their lowest point in the past five years, decreasing 9 per cent from $141,000 to $129,000 from 2022 to mid-2023. In contrast, salaries in the UK have seen a 4 per cent increase year-on-year, rising from 82,000 pounds to 86,000 pounds. Despite economic volatility, jobseekers in the US and UK have maintained their salary expectations at $146,000 and 82,000 pounds a year. “However, these figures may not be as impactful as candidates would expect when accounting for current market conditions,” the report mentioned.
The demand for such roles, with posted roles on the tech hiring platform lowered from 45 per cent in 2019 to 25 per cent in the first half of 2023. “Compared to last year, we are witnessing a seismic shift in tech employee and employer preferences. The surging demand for experienced tech talent on our platform and employers’ increasing reliance on AI tools point to an ever-growing skills gap,” said Josh Brenner, CEO at Hired. This challenge will only heighten as companies reduce their hiring locations amid their return to the office and limit their access to qualified talent. “With the future talent pipeline at risk of a deficit, companies cannot afford to disregard high-quality talent at any level,” Brenner added. Employers have consequently decreased the number of open roles in high-cost-of-living markets by 19 per cent and have nearly quadrupled the number of roles in low-cost-of-living markets to 9 per cent since 2020, the findings showed.

Your omega 3 fish oil pills may be rancid, unhealthy: Study clinical research and leadership at George Washington University in the US.
New York, Sep 25 (IANS) Are you one of those who daily pop omega-3 fatty acid supplements like fish oil for its health benefits? Beware, they may be rancid pills, and not healthy as claimed, suggests a new study. Derived from plants (algae) as well as seafood (fish, krill, etc.) , omega-3 supplements -- sometimes labelled as fish oil -- are often taken because of research that suggests they may provide health benefits. Rancidity is measured by the amount of oxidation of the oil in the supplement. As supplements become more oxidised, the nutritional benefits delivered to the consumer are reduced. "Our study suggests many of these supplements are not fresh -- and thus may not provide a potential health benefit," said Leigh A. Frame, Associate Professor of
Higher levels of omega-3 have been associated with a wide range of benefits to multiple organs, including the brain and eyes, but the most common reason for its popularity with consumers is to help the cardiovascular system. The researchers conducted six years of tests on 72 of the most popular brands of omega-3 supplements, using the recommended rancidity limits that are voluntarily set by GOED, a global trade group that represents omega-3 manufacturers. The results, published in the Journal of Dietary Supplements, found a total of 45 per cent of flavoured and unflavoured supplements tested positive for rancidity, with 32 per cent of flavoured supplements testing positive and 13 per cent of unflavored pills. However, added flavouring can mask the rancidity of supplements. While the oxidation is present in the flavoured supplements,
indicating there is a positive level of rancidity, Frame said the amount of oxidation isn't known because of the flavouring compounds themselves. "Flavouring is potentially masking the freshness of omega-3 supplements in two ways," said lead author Jacob Hands, medical student at the varsity’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences. If fish oil supplements are fresh, they won't have a fishy taste or smell, he explained. "Flavouring can mask those aspects but also makes it difficult for researchers to determine the level of oxidation and the quality of the supplement." While there are third party companies who test vitamins and supplements to verify a label's purity of its substances, even brands that are tested cannot be guaranteed of freshness, Frame explained. Both Frame and Hands suggest exercising caution with flavoured fish oil supplements at this point due to the uncertainty of how the flavouring may affect their freshness and, thus, any potential health benefits.
US surgeons perform 2nd-ever pig heart transplant to save dying man (UMMC). A 58-year-old patient with terminal heart disease became the second patient in the world to receive a historic transplant of a genetically modified pig heart on September 20.
San Francisco, Sep 23 (IANS) US surgeons have performed a second historic transplant of a pig heart into a patient with endstage cardiovascular disease to save his life. Both historic surgeries were performed by University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) faculty at the University of Maryland Medical Center
According to doctors, he is recovering and communicating with his loved ones. The first historic surgery, performed in January, 2022, was conducted on David Bennett by University of Maryland Medicine surgeons. Lawrence Faucette, the new patient, had advanced heart disease. Due to his pre-existing peripheral vascular disease and complications with internal
bleeding, UMMC and several other leading transplant hospitals deemed him ineligible for a traditional human heart transplant. According to doctors, this transplant was the only option available for Faucette who was facing near-certain death from heart failure. “My only real hope left is to go with the pig heart, the xenotransplant,” said Faucette during an interview from his hospital room a few days before his surgery. “Dr Griffith, Dr Mohiuddin and their entire staff have been incredible, but nobody knows from this point forward. At least now I have hope, and I have a chance," he added.
Your favourite burger, pizza, diet coke may raise your risk of depression: Study
New York, Sep 22 (IANS) Eating ultra processed foods (UPF) like burgers, pizzas and diet coke is associated with increased risk of depression, according to a study. The findings, published in the JAMA Network Open journal,
www.indianews.com.au
suggest that eating energy-dense, palatable, and ready-to-eat items, including grain foods, sweet and savory snacks, ready-made meals, and beverages with artificial sweeteners, processed meat, dairy products, fats, and sauces, can raise risk of depression. "Although the mechanism associating UPF to depression is unknown, recent experimental data suggests that artificial sweeteners elicit purinergic transmission in the brain,
which may be involved in the etiopathogenesis of depression," said researchers from Harvard University in the US. Prior studies have been hampered by short-term dietary data and a limited ability to account for potential confounders. Additionally, no study has identified which UPF foods and/or ingredients that may be associated with risk of depression or how the timing of UPF consumption may be associated.

Rare gene variants causing hereditary hair loss in men identified
London, Sep 24 (IANS) Researchers have identified rare gene variants that cause male pattern hair loss, also termed androgenetic alopecia.
sequences must be captured base by base, e.g., through genome or exome sequencing of affected individuals," explained first author Sabrina Henne, doctoral student at the Institute of Human Genetics at the University Hospital of Bonn (UKB) and the University of Bonn in Germany. The statistical challenge lies in the fact that these rare genetic variants may be carried by very few, or even single, individuals.
Male-pattern hair loss is the most common form of hair loss in men, and is largely attributable to hereditary factors. Current treatment options and risk prediction are suboptimal, thus necessitating research into the genetic underpinnings of the condition.
Among other methods, the Bonn researchers used a type of sequence kernel association test (SKAT), which is a popular method for detecting associations with rare variants, as well as GenRisk.
To date, studies worldwide have focused primarily on common genetic variants, and have implicated more than 350 genetic loci, in particular the androgen receptor gene, which is located on the maternally inherited X chromosome.
Within this extensive data set, Bonn geneticists examined rare gene variants that occur in less than one per cent of the population.
In contrast, the contribution to this common condition of rare genetic variants has traditionally been assumed to be low. However, systematic analyses of rare variants have been lacking. "Such analyses are more challenging as they require large cohorts, and the genetic
The research involved the analysis of genetic sequences from 72,469 male UK Biobank participants.
Using modern bioinformatic and statistical methods, they found associations between malepattern hair loss and rare genetic variants in the following five genes: EDA2R, WNT10A, HEPH, CEPT1, and EIF3F. Prior to the analyses, EDA2R and WNT10A were already considered candidate genes, based on previous analyses of common variants.
Study shows our gut microbes may determine bone health millions of people worldwide over the age of 50, and can increase the risk of fractures.
New York, Sep 24 (IANS) Our gut microbiome may have a role to play in our bone health and ward off the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, suggests a study. The findings, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology, could one day provide the opportunity to alter gut microbiomes to achieve better bone health, as scientists learn more about "osteomicrobiology" -- a new term recently used to characterise this relationship. A team from Hebrew SeniorLife and Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research in the US conducted the study of older men to determine whether they could find a potentially modifiable factor contributing to skeletal health. They used high-resolution imaging of the arm and leg. This is significant because low bone density increases the risk of developing osteoporosis, affecting
The team found that bacteria called Akkermansia, which has been associated with obesity, and Clostridiales bacterium DTU089, had negative associations with bone health for older adults. DTU089, a bacterium from the class Clostridia, has been described to be more abundant in people with lower physical activity, and lower protein intake. It could be significant because prior studies have found protein intake and physical activity have a definite connection to skeletal health. "We found patterns in which greater abundance of microbiota were associated with worse measures of bone density and microarchitecture. In fact, some bacteria were associated with differences in the bone cross sectional area, suggesting the possibility that certain microbes could influence how the bone changes size with ageing," said Douglas P. Kiel, Senior Scientist at the Marcus Institute.

September 24, 2023 (IANSlife) The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has listed the ancient town of 'Si Thep' and its associated 'Dvaravati Monuments' in Phetchabun province as a cultural world heritage site, bringing the number of World Heritage Sites in Thailand to seven.
According to the World Heritage List, the ancient town of Si Thep and its associated Dvaravati Monuments is a serial property of three component parts: A distinctive twin-town site, featuring an Inner and Outer Town surrounded by moats, the massive Khao Klang Nok ancient monument, and the Khao Thamorrat Cave ancient monument. Together these sites represent the architecture, artistic traditions, and religious diversity of the Dvaravati Empire that thrived in Central Thailand from the 6th to the 10th centuries, demonstrating the influences from India. The local adaptation of these traditions resulted in a distinctive artistic tradition known as the Si Thep School of Art, which later influenced other civilisations in Southeast Asia.
Si Thep is located about 340 km north of Bangkok in the Phetchabun province, a region known for breathtaking vistas, and misty mountains that serve as a camping and trekking paradise. The ancient town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List during the World Heritage Committee’s 45th extended session held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

September 20, 2023 (IANSlife) Eco-friendly fashion implies making sustainable choices in a world driven by fast-paced trends and disposable clothing. But then the term 'sustainable fashion' itself is an oxymoron. As defined in Cambridge Dictionary, 'fashion' means a style that is popular at a particular time, and on the other hand, 'sustainable' means able to continue over a period of time. Despite this contradiction, the notion of being fashionable while embracing sustainability is not only possible but also increasingly essential in our modern society. Impact on Environment The fashion industry has long been associated with a significant ecological footprint. It's a leading contributor to pollution, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. Following are some of the industry's most pressing issues: Fast Fashion The rise of fast fashion has led to an accelerated production cycle, where clothing is designed, produced, and discarded rapidly. This contributes to massive amounts of textile waste.
The actress from Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl, who couldn't wait to wed her beloved, wears her now husband's name on her lehenga veil, which

“For Now, For A Lifetime” campaign celebrates moments of instincts
Resource Intensive Traditional textile production relies heavily on water, energy, and chemicals. Huge amounts of electricity and heat are required for cloth and garments manufacturing. Most of the factories operate in areas that are largely dependent on coal for producing energy, causing huge gas emissions. The fashion industry generates vast amounts of waste, from unsold inventory to discarded clothing, much of which ends up in landfills. Given these environmental challenges, the fashion industry is under increasing pressure to become eco-friendly and embrace sustainability. Rise of Eco-friendly Fashion: In recent years, eco-friendly fashion has gained traction as a response to the industry's environmental and ethical concerns. Eco-friendly and
sustainable fashion focuses on minimizing harm to the environment and improving social conditions throughout the supply chain. Here are some of the key aspects: Eco-friendly Materials Sustainable fashion prioritizes the use of eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, hemp, Tencel, and recycled fibers. These materials are produced with lower environmental impact. Ethical Production By prioritizing sustainability, brands engage and support the local communities and provide safe, healthy, and fair working conditions for the labor. Transparency Sustainable brands aim to be transparent about their supply chains, making it easier for consumers to trace the origin of their clothing. Circular Fashion It promotes the idea of reducing, reusing, and recycling or upcycling clothing. This includes repair services, resale platforms, and clothing rental services. Fortunately, consumers are also becoming more conscious of these issues and demanding green alternatives. By adopting some of the following ecofriendly practices, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint and make a positive difference. Choose Sustainable Fabrics Opt for clothing made from sustainable materials like organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, Tencel, or recycled fibers. These fabrics are produced with less environmental impact compared to conventional ones. Buy Second-Hand Thrifting and shopping at vintage stores not only reduces waste but also gives clothing a second life. You can find unique, pre-loved items that contribute to a more sustainable fashion cycle. Support Sustainable Brands There is an increasing trend of brands that prioritize sustainability. One should opt for them and support. Look for certifications like Fair Trade, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), or B Corp to ensure ethical and eco-friendly practices.

However, the emphasis and popularity has significantly shifted in recent years. Our ancestors used natural ingredients like Olive oil, milk, rose, etc as a part of their skincare routine. They also used to drink and apply all kinds of concoctions to maintain that healthy glow. But, now times have changed. The last two decades were all about innovation in the topical or application-based products industry. We evolved from soaps, moisturisers, and lotion to Niacinamide, Vitamin-C, and Retinol of the world. In all this, we forgot the foundation, the fundamentals of skincare which was to keep the skin nourished from within. The importance of this can be explained by the 80:20 rule. 80% of skincare is internal and only 20% is external. This is where ingestible skincare comes into the picture. Imagine nature's finest elements coming together, old wisdom blending with modern science, all aimed at crafting skin that not only looks clear but truly thrives from the inside. Unlike topical skincare, ingestible skincare works on all layers of the skin- the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. But, the concern for the larger populace remains a side-effect! There is an answer to this: Ayurvedic ingestible skincare! It is safe and easy to consume by anyone, anywhere. It not only provides nourishment to the skin but contributes to holistic growth. There are some
ingredients that make it potent like rose, pomegranate, mulethi (licorice), and Shatavari. Each of these botanical treasures brings a unique set of benefits that nourish, protect, and rejuvenate your skin. Let’s take an in-depth look at each one of them: Cultivating Collagen Roses cherished for their beauty, carry a hidden treasure – an abundance of vitamins A and C. These vitamins aren't just essential for overall health; they play a pivotal role in boosting collagen production within your body. Collagen, the skin's building block, is responsible for its firmness and elasticity. By including roses in your ingestible skincare routine, you're nurturing collagen synthesis, paving the way for healthier-looking skin that defies time. Antioxidant Oasis Pomegranates burst with antioxidants that shield your skin from the ravages of time. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals, preventing premature ageing and promoting overall skin health. However, pomegranates don't stop at just that. These rubyred jewels also excel at providing hydration from within. They work their magic to boost hyaluronic acid levels in the skin, keeping it plump. With pomegranate as your ally, you're not just treating your skin; you're also improving overall skin health. The Stress-Busting Detoxifier In the hustle of modern life, stress takes its toll on your skin. Enter shatavari, an adaptogen revered for its ability to restore
balance amidst chaos. By aiding in stress management, Shatavari minimises the release of toxins caused by stress, effectively detoxifying your skin. But that's not all; Shatavari's wonders extend to promoting the production of glutathione in your body. This powerful antioxidant not only safeguards your skin against damage but also contributes to healthier skin. With Shatavari, you're embracing a holistic approach to skin health that reflects on- both the outer as well as inner layers of the skin.

Vanquishing Dark Spots Mulethi, or licorice, emerges as a hero in the battle of dark spots and pigmentation. Excessive melanin production can lead to uneven skin tone and dark patches. Mulethi comes to the rescue by inhibiting the overproduction of melanin, effectively reducing the appearance of dark spots and promoting more uniform skin. By incorporating mulethi into your ingestible skincare regimen, you're addressing hyper pigmentation at its root, unveiling a clearer, healthier canvas. Holistic Approach to Beauty: Beyond Skin Deep Ingestible skincare isn't just a trend; it's a holistic approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of our body's systems. What we eat impacts not only our skin's appearance but also our health. The most important factor is that you do not need to spend hours and hours in the kitchen. You can consume it in a convenient and super quick manner with modern formats like supplements, powders, and capsules. As you refine your skincare routine, consider looking beyond the mirror and expanding your beauty arsenal with ingestibles. Ingestible skincare is a fascinating journey that merges the magic of nutrition with the science of beauty. By embracing the power of what you consume, you're unlocking a whole new realm of clearer skin that truly works like magic – from the inside out. (By Dr. Kriti Soni, R&D Head, Kapiva)

Embracing organic beauty for skin and environment To have a better understanding of what organic beauty really means after its recent surge, IANSlife spoke with Sanjali Giri, VP of International Brands and Retail at House of Beauty. By N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe September 19, 2023 (IANSlife) Organic beauty has had a recent surge in popularity, but one question we should all ask ourselves before purchasing one is if it is truly organic or if beauty firms are simply slapping an organic label on the containers and selling it like a hot dog.
www.indianews.com.au
Read on... What does organic beauty really mean now? Giri: There is a lot of ambiguity in understanding organic beauty in the market and sometimes it is also perceived as a synonym for Natural. Unlike Natural, the term Organic is highly regulated and certified, which for an A-level organic product should
mean more than 70% certified organic ingredients in them. Organic Beauty stands for clean and high-performance skincare and cosmetics that enhance the powerful antioxidants and limit harmful chemical residues and synthetic additives. It is a beauty solution for a clean and conscious lifestyle. How does Juice Beauty translate this philosophy into your products and formulations? Giri: Juice Beauty’s philosophy is rooted in two fundamental principles which are Health and Sustainability. The brand believes

WGA strikes officially end after 148 days after agreement with AMPTP
ENTERTAINMENT
Helen Flanagan hits back as trolls target her over glamorous transformation
states the following guidelines of the new deal: - AI can’t write or rewrite literary material, and AI-generated material will not be considered source material under the MBA, meaning that AI-generated material can’t be used to undermine a writer’s credit or separated rights.
Los Angeles, Sep 27 (IANS) The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has officially ended their strike after 148 days following a tentative agreement with the Association of Motion Pictures and Television Producers (AMPTP) with a new contract. The picket line officially ended at midnight on September 27 as the strikers officially called off their protest. The new agreement will let all the members of the WGA go back to their respective offices before a final ratification vote is held from October 2-9.
PST at the Hollywood Palladium. The WGA East will convene the same night at Manhattan Center at 6 p.m. EST. Zoom meetings will be held the next day at 5 p.m. PST and Friday at 11 a.m. PST.
- A writer can choose to use AI when performing writing services, if the company consents and provided that the writer follows applicable company policies, but the company can’t require the writer to use AI software (e.g., ChatGPT) when performing writing services. - The Company must disclose to the writer if any materials given to the writer have been generated by AI or incorporate AI-generated material. - The WGA reserves the right to assert that exploitation of writers’ material to train AI is prohibited by MBA or other law.
“We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership,” the WGA said in a statement announcing the tentative deal on September 24.
The WGA’s vote to end the strike order puts an official end to the work stoppage, which was still in effect as of Sunday, when the WGA told membership: “To be clear, no one is to return to work until specifically authorised to by the Guild. We are still on strike until then. But we are, as of today, suspending WGA picketing. Instead, if you are able, we encourage you to join the SAGAFTRA picket lines this week. “
WGA and AMPTP have yet to release the details of the tentative agreement, which WGA membership will vote to ratify in the coming days. The guild’s agreement as gathered by Variety
But while the WGA strikes may have ended, the picketing lines at SAG-AFTRA are ongoing, who are also holding a strike against the AMPTP for more than 75 days now.

Johnny Depp starts shooting for ‘Modì’ in Budapest
The 33-year-old actress got quite the reaction with a glamorous video of her getting ready for a night out with her girlfriends, reports ‘Mirror.co.uk’.
The WGA will hold member meetings on both coasts this week in person and on zoom to discuss the details of the contract. Given the enthusiastic endorsement of the WGA negotiating committee, it is expected to be easily ratified by strike-weary members. The vote to lift the strike order followed unanimous votes by the WGA’s negotiating committee, the WGA West board and WGA East council to send the contract to members for ratification. The WGA West will hold a member meeting on September 27 at 7 p.m.

In the short clip, Helen teamed a pink corset with a pair of high-waisted baggy jeans. The mum-of-three accessorised the 90s-inspired look with white sandals, a mauve purse and chunky gold earrings by Neima Row.

She finished the video by spritsing herself with perfume, before applying a slick of pink lipstick to her pout and adjusting her gifted top's shoulder straps. "Love a Corset," she captioned the post, adding that the special outfit had been put together to attend, "Drinks with girls". Doja Cat's hit song, ‘Paint The Town Red’, was playing over the video.
"Compliment yourself. Get dressed up for yourself. Take yourself out and celebrate your life. A woman becomes a force when she learns to be her own best friend,” she wrote.
Helen also appeared to clap back at the trolls, taking to her Instagram Story to share some words of inspiration for her fellow women.
