forces over the evil forces. Sooranpor or Soorasamharam is part of Kandha Sashti Vratham Festival. It is a ritual folk performance that recreates the killing of Asuras by Lord Murugan. The Sooranpor performance is based on the story of Lord Murugan as given in the Kandhapurana. In

the days preceding the performance, the Kandhapurana is narrated at the temples. The performance ends with the killing of Soorapadman or Padmasura and his race by Lord Murugan using his weapon the vel. For the performance, the vel is specially consecrated and during the staging, it is ceremonially placed on the neck of the effigy of Soorapadman after which the head is removed, depicting the beheading of the Asura (evil forces).
