uku'alofa (Tongo), Aug 28 (IANS)

In a move aimed at countering China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, along with other Pacific leaders, endorsed the Pacific Policing

The chopper, operated by Crystal Aviation Company, had previously made an emergency landing near the Kedarnath helipad on May 24, 2024, due to a technical fault.

The MI-17 had lifted the helicopter, suspending it beneath, for the journey. However, during the flight, the MI-17 started to lose balance due to the weight of the helicopter and the effects of the wind and crashed near the

Mandakini River in Lincholi.

Sensing the growing danger, the MI-17 pilot made the decision to release the helicopter into a valley after identifying an empty area. The helicopter subsequently fell near the Mandakini River in Lincholi. The accident was caught on camera.

According to a district tourism official, there were no passengers or luggage aboard the helicopter

at the time of the incident.

The helicopter had previously been safely landed by the pilot on May 24, 2024, after a technical fault was detected during its approach to the Kedarnath helipad. All passengers were safely evacuated at that time.

District tourism official Rahul Chaubey stated, "The plan was to transport the Crystal Aviation helicopter to the Gauchar airstrip for repairs this morning. The MI-17 helicopter had taken off around 7 a.m. with the helicopter suspended underneath. However, as it neared Tharu Camp, the MI-17 began to lose balance due to

the weight and wind conditions, forcing the pilot to release the helicopter."

Rescue teams arrived at the crash site promptly after receiving the information and are currently assessing the situation. Further investigations into the incident are underway.

cases.

“Today, atrocities against women, safety of children are matters of serious concern for society. Many strict laws have been made in the country for the safety of women, but we need to make it more active,” PM Modi said.

“The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater assurance of safety half the population will get,” said PM Modi, addressing an event in Delhi on the 75 years of the Supreme Court.

Notably, the Prime Minister, in the last few days, has repeatedly spoken about safeguarding women and also asked state

governments to accord top priority on cases pertaining to girls.

PM Modi’s remarks come a day after West Bengal Chief Minister’s second letter to the Centre, demanding a central legislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder.

The Trinamool supremo also alleged that her previous letter to the PM went “unanswered” on such a “sensitive issue.”

The Centre, replying to the Bengal CM’s letter, highlighted that the existing laws are strong enough to deal with such crimes.

BJP leaders called out the state government over slow and tardy progress in the case and asked it

to act swiftly, rather than playing to the gallery.

PM Modi’s call for swift justice in crimes against women came while addressing the inaugural event of the 2-day National Conference of District Judiciary, at Bharat Mandapam on Saturday.

The Supreme Court has organised a two-day national conference of the District Judiciary from August 31 to September 1.

The two-day conference will have five working sessions that will discuss wide-ranging issues pertaining to the district judiciary including infrastructure, human resource, judicial security, judicial training and more.

to explain their actions which caused harm to Sikh ‘panth’.

Akal Takht is the Sikh community’s apex religious institution where it can seek an apology for any religious or ethical misconduct.

A day earlier, Sukhbir Badal, who had been facing disenchantment within the party, appointed his long-time family loyalist and former Rajya Sabha member Balwinder Singh Bhunder as the

party's working president.

Party rebels and several Sikh organisations have been asking Badal to step down from the post of president.

Earlier, the Akal Takht secretariat released a letter written by Sukhbir Badal to the Akal Takht Jathedar. “I take responsibility for all mistakes, whether made by the party or during the regime of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal).

Sukhbir Badal had said he was ready to face whatever

punishment would be given by the Akal Takht sahib.

Among several issues, Sukhbir Badal’s letter referred to the 2015 sacrilege incidents, saying the then SAD government could not ensure punishment for the guilty.

The letter mentioned that Sukhbir Badal allegedly used his “influence on Akal Takht” to ensure a pardon for Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was booked in 2007 for allegedly imitating Guru Gobind Singh.

Forum (PIF) Leaders' Meeting in Tonga, aims to enhance the capacity of Pacific nations to address law and order challenges, fulfil internal security needs, and provide mutual support in times of crisis.

Australia will commit approximately $400 million over five years to ensure the PPI delivers on the aspirations of Pacific countries. The country's contribution will include infrastructure costs associated with new policing Centres of Excellence in the region.

"This is one of the occasions

where the Pacific family essentially believe that one plus one plus one equals more than three. That if you have more effective engagement, coordination and interoperability, you'll get better outcomes. So a common sense approach tells you that that's right, and it's something that has the support, not just of the leaders in the Pacific Island Forum, but has the support as well of the police, the respective police agencies themselves," said Albanese. Under the new initiative, Brisbane will host the PPI Policing Development and Coordination Hub, and four regional police

crore, Gautam Adani and Family, who saw their wealth grow by a massive 95 per cent, clinched the number one spot in the coveted Huron list.

Mukesh Ambani took the second spot, with a wealth of Rs 10,14,700 crore, followed by Shiv Nadar and the family of HCL Technologies at the third place with a wealth of Rs 3,14,000 crore.

A record 1,539 Indians (up by 220) across 134 cities now have Rs 1,000 crore wealth on average -a 150 per cent increase from seven years ago -- from family-run businesses and startup founders to private equity investors, angel investors, next-generation leaders, film stars and more.

The country saw one new billionaire every five days last year, according to the list. While China saw a 25 per cent decline in its number of billionaires, India experienced a 29 per cent increase, reaching a record 334 billionaires. Cumulative wealth has increased by 46 per cent, while average wealth has increased by 25 per cent. About 1,334 individuals saw their wealth increase or stay the same, of which 272 were new faces, whilst 205 saw their wealth drop and there were 45 dropouts. While real estate and industrial products added the most significant number of new entrants to the list, industrial products are still at number one and have contributed 142 entrants to the list. The youngest on the list is aged 21. “India continues to score Gold in the ‘Wealth Creation

Olympics’. The number of billionaires in 2024 Hurun India Rich List hits a triple century, with all the top 20 sectors adding new faces to the list! The top 20 sectors all added new faces, showcasing the unstoppable spirit of Indian entrepreneurs as they drive growth across the board,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher, Hurun India.

The pivot in the Indian economy from a services-led to a manufacturing-led model is reflected in the ‘2024 Hurun India Rich List’.

“Industrial products sector entrepreneurs on the list have seen a remarkable 47 per cent CAGR in their cumulative wealth over the past five years -- the highest among all sectors.

“This shift is fueled by several key factors, including the Central government’s significant increase in capital expenditure on infrastructure development, which has risen to 133.3 billion dollars for FY 2024-25, marking an 11.1 per cent jump from the previous year,” said Junaid.

The country’s favourable business environment is further strengthened by over 42 trade agreements and a reduction in corporate tax rates to 15 per cent for new manufacturing units. These factors have significantly impacted the manufacturing sector, as entrepreneurs in this category on the list have added Rs 28 lakh crore in wealth, accounting for nearly 56 per cent of the total wealth added to the list.

The Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG) - a multi-country police capability with a ready pool of trained Pacific police to deploy in response to Pacific country requirements, such as for major event management or additional capacity in times of crisis - will also be established.

Albanese stressed that PPI is a Pacific-led, Australia-backed initiative, reflecting the collective strengths of the region.

Little Ash characters meet the real deal at Book Week

Tennis superstar Ash Barty was surrounded by some smaller versions of herself when she presided over a Book Week parade in Springfield city today (Friday 23 September).

Ms Barty was a special guest at St Peter’s Lutheran College Springfield as students took to dressing up for their Book Week parade. And some of the students were dressed as Little Ash from Ms Barty’s children’s book series.

Ms Barty said while she enjoyed seeing children embrace sports, she also loved seeing their eagerness for the much-loved tradition of Book Week, which encourages young readers.

“I loved seeing the creativity on display in Book Week as the children indulged their imaginative side or took a humble approach to becoming their favourite book character,” Ms Barty said.

“Book Week is a great opportunity for children to embrace literacy by dressing up as their favourite characters, be it a professional athlete, animal, fairy tale or simply a personality they can identify with.”

Ms Barty hung up her tennis racquet in 2022 after a career that included victories at Wimbledon and the Australian Open and the World No.1 WTA ranking. The Springfield city’s Woodcrest State College former student continues to develop childrens books including the Little Ash series, My Dream For You and Tennis Camp Diaries: Doubles Disaster.

“I have always loved reading. My Mum and Dad instilled a love of reading in my sisters and I when we were very young and it is a passion that has stayed with me,”

Ms Barty said.

“I’ve always wanted to contribute to children’s education and my kids books, inspired by experiences and learnings from my childhood, have been a wonderful step in that direction.

I am really looking forward to creating more books for kids and

encouraging young people to enjoy reading.”

In further support of her passion for children’s education, Ms Barty, through the Ash Barty Foundation (ABF), announced yesterday a donation of over 16,000 children’s books to libraries around Australia.

St Peter’s Springfield’s is one of the members of the Greater Springfield Learning Coalition (GSLC) that includes 11 schools in the city.

The GSLC is a unique partnership between the city’s principals from across government and nongovernment sectors who discuss ways that they can improve their approach to teaching and offer their students exciting and innovative learning experiences.

The program directly benefits the Springfield city community, working towards enabling local educational institutions to become some of the best in the state.

Springfield City Group’s Executive General Manager – Education and Smart City Dr Richard Eden said

the program, which also includes the biennial Festival of Learning, was encouraging collaboration between schools. The third Festival of Learning was held in 2023, operating every alternate year.

“Springfield city was established 31 years ago on the pillars of education, health and innovation and through the Learning Coalition we showcase a Learning City in action,” Dr Eden said.

Springfield City Group Chairman Maha Sinnathamby AM said the city would always promote the value of learning, as education is the currency of the future.

“Education is the only currency that you can cash in anywhere in the world – it is the only currency that can’t be stolen from the owner” Mr Sinnathamby said.

“Australia needs more of that education currency here. It’s our passport to the future success of this country.

“That is why Springfield City is truly committed to fostering the brainpower that can fuel the future of Australia in this era of innovation.”

Centre directs insurance firm to pay Rs 225 cr to 2 lakh farmers for crop loss

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) The Centre’s Technical Advisory Committee on Saturday issued an order to an insurance company, directing it to pay within one week the Rs 225 crore claims due to farmers in Maharashtra under the PM’s crop insurance scheme for damage caused to their soybean crop.

The decision is expected to benefit around 2 lakh farmers, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

The insurance company had been dilly dallying over the issue, leaving the farmers in the lurch. The issue came to the forefront when Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan interacted

with the farmers in Maharashtra's Nanded on August 21. During the interaction, the farmers from Parbhani district informed the Union Minister about the problem of pending insurance claims for their soyabean crop.

Chouhan then gave instructions to the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare officials to immediately resolve the issue.

The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare held a meeting of the National Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in this regard on August 22. At the meeting, the TAC rejected the objection raised by the insurance company on crop cutting experiments, and directed the firm to pay the pending claims.

Due to this decision, pending claims of Rs 200-225 crore are to be paid to about 2,00,000 farmers of Parbhani district, the official statement said.

The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is a governmentsponsored crop insurance

scheme that aims to support the agricultural sector by providing affordable insurance to farmers. The scheme was launched in 2016 and offers comprehensive risk coverage for crops from pre-sowing to post-harvest stage against non-preventable natural risks.

The objective of the scheme is to provide financial support to farmers who experience crop loss or damage due to unforeseen events.

The scheme integrates multiple stakeholders on a single platform, including the Central and state governments, banks, CSCs, insurance companies, and farmers.

Farmers can apply for the scheme online by creating a farmer's login account on the NCIP portal. They will need to provide their khasra, khatauni, bank account details, and Aadhaar, along with a declaration about the crop they plan to sow.

NRI’s shooting in Amritsar fallout of personal dispute?

Amritsar, Aug 24 (IANS) In a broad daylight crime, an NRI was shot at on Saturday by two turbaned assailants at pointblank range inside his residence at Daburji village in Amritsar district.

Personal dispute involving his ex-wife over property is believed to the reason behind the crime, sources said.

Sukhchain Singh, a US resident who came here 20 days back, was shot in the head and arm by the two assailants in front of his family, including children, who could be seen in CCTV footage pleading not to harm their father with folded hands.

Singh was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Amritsar with critical bullet injuries. Five members of Singh's ex-wife's family have been booked in connection with the shooting incident, in which a local gang is suspected to be involved.

In the CCTV footage, the miscreants, who came on a motorcycle and did not wear masks, are seen entering the house in the morning. Singh's children were playing inside the house at the time. One of the armed assailants is seen approaching the NRI and asking him to enter a bedroom at gunpoint. As he resisted, both assailants fired at him from close range.

The entire family was in the house when the crime took place.

After shooting Singh, the miscreants managed to escape.

The video also showed locals rushing to help the victim, who was seen lying on the ground in a

poll of blood.

As per the police, the two assailants entered the house on the pretext of asking to see the registration certificate of a luxury car that Singh purchased earlier this week.

DCP Vishaljit Singh told the media that the police have collected the CCTV footage from the house and launched an investigation to find out the motive behind the crime, and information about the assailants.

As per sources, Sukhchain Singh returned from the US about a month ago and was engaged in the purchase of a hotel and a luxury vehicle.

The family told the police that there was no demand for ransom.

The police are examining the possibility of the involvement of a local gang.

Punjab Minister for NRI Affairs, Kuldeep S. Dhaliwal, also said that the incident might have been the fallout of a personal dispute.

“We are verifying whether the issue was personal. Property and other personal disputes involving NRIs are prevalent these days. My appeal to the NRIs is that any personal issue should be resolved through discussion and mutual consent,” Dhaliwal told the media. Meanwhile, claiming that the law and order situation in the state has collapsed, Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal said, “Such incidents are happening every day in Punjab. Punjabis are not safe even in their homes. I think you (Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann) should resign on moral grounds.”

BJP's Manjinder Singh Sirsa said he was pained and shocked by the incident.

“Looks like there is no law and order in Punjab... Bhagwant Mann’s 'Rangla Punjab' is just a dialogue,” he said.

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said NRIs once proudly called Punjab their home, but they now live in fear.

“AAP government's incompetence has turned Punjab into a danger zone,” Warring wrote on X.

km track network to emerge as the largest green railway in the world, according to a senior official of the Ministry of Railways.

Mukul Saran Mathur, Additional

Member, Railway Board, said that the railway system caters to two crore passengers daily and has recently operated over 5,000 special trains to assist migrant workers. He highlighted the Vande Bharat trains as a “flagship product” in India’s rail modernisation efforts.

Speaking at the ASSOCHAM National Conference here, Mathur said that the Indian government has allocated Rs 85,000 crore for railway expansion in the 2023-24 fiscal year. Improvements include a faster ticket refund process, now reduced to one or two

business days.

Other experts at the conference said that railway modernisation is the key to India's economic growth and a way forward to achieve the Viksit Bharat or developed India goal by 2047.

Deepak Sharma from ASSOCHAM stressed that modernising the railways is central to India’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), aiming to enhance connectivity and support economic growth.

Sanjay Bajpai from the National Council on Logistics and Warehousing highlighted the

role of AI and machine learning in achieving 100 per cent cargo visibility and last-mile connectivity through the Gati Shakti plan.

CBI seeking evidence tampering proof to get to truth of RG Kar rape-murder case

Kolkata, Aug 29 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials probing the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata are focussing on the possibility of evidence tampering in the case.

Sources said that the CBI officials are going by the theory that if the rape and murder was the handiwork of “few”, the criminality of evidence tampering involved “many”.

In view of this theory the CBI is trying to find proof of evidence tampering so that it can lead the

agency closer to the truth behind the RG Kar rape and murder case.

In this line of investigation, what has become extremely crucial for the CBI is the video which recently went viral allegedly showing close confidants of former principal of RG Kar, Sandip Ghosh being spotted at the seminar hall soon after the body of the victim was recovered on the morning of August 9. The body of the victim cannot be see in the video.

However, IANS has been unable to verify the authenticity of the video that went viral.

Sources added that although Kolkata Police has claimed that the major portion of the seminar hall was cordoned off after the body’s recovery, CBI officials are not buying that logic since as per protocol the entire seminar hall should have been considered

as the “scene of crime” and hence instead of cordoning only a portion of it, the entire hall should have been cordoned off barring entry of others in the room.

The central agency’s Investigating Officers (IOs) are also probing the recent circulation of letters on fake CBI letterheads on social media where supposed central agency ‘officials’ have been making comments on various aspects of the case.

Sources said that the IOs believe that the fake letters are being circulated deliberately to spread misinformation and mislead people about the investigation process.

The CBI officials are trying to reach the source of such fake letters with the motive of getting nearer to the truth behind the main crime.

‘Perform, Reform, Transform, Inform’: PM Modi’s four-point mantra

New Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chairing a marathon meeting with his ministerial colleagues to review the functioning of the government, exhorted them to work without rest and gave a new four-point mantra of "Perform,

for ministers

Reform, Transform, Inform".

According to sources, the meeting at the Sushma Swaraj Bhavan on Wednesday lasted for more than five hours while PM Modi dwelled upon the government's functioning, its achievements, and their propagation and publicity, welfare measures and other key issues in an address to his colleagues, which lasted around 40 minutes.

The Prime Minister also asked the Ministers to connect with people through social media platforms to send across the message that the government

is working responsibly. He also asked for people's responses to be expedited on social media so that his government is seen as responsive.

The Ministers have been asked to give information about 10 major decisions of their respective Ministries on completion of 100 days of the Modi 3.0 government and also to propagate them on a mass level, sources said.

Prime Minister Modi in the meeting has also specifically asked for faster and better communication of his government's decisions.

Telangana CM’s brother among 240 people to get notice for alleged encroachment

Hyderabad, Aug 29 (IANS)

Authorities in Hyderabad have issued notices to Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s brother A. Tirupathi Reddy and several other property owners around Hyderabad’s Durgam Cheruvu Lake for alleged encroachments.

Amid the continuing crackdown Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on illegal structures that have come up Full Tank Level (FTL) and buffer zone of water bodies in and around Hyderabad, notices were issued to 240 structures around the lake in Hitec City, the Information Technology hub.

The Chief Minister’s brother

Tirupathi Reddy, who has a house near the lake, has also been issued the notice.

Several prominent residents in the posh area have been served notices asking them to remove the structures within 30 days as they fall within the NonDevelopment Zone of Durgam Cheruvu Lake.

Rangareddy District Collector and Serilingampally Deputy Collector issued notices to residents of Nectars Colony, Doctors Colony, Kavuri Hills, and Amar Society, which are adjacent to Cheruvu.

The notices issued under Section 23(1) of the Water, Land, and Trees Act (WALTA) state that structures encroached beyond the permissible limits of the lake be voluntarily demolished within the given timeframe. The authorities have made it clear that failure to comply will result in the demolitions.

From dignity to digital revolution: How Jan Dhan reshaped India’s economic landscape

New Delhi, Aug 28 (IANS) As India marks a decade of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) on Wednesday, it would be interesting to examine the intricate planning of the economic framework that Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisioned from the outset.

Jan Dhan, launched within months of his tenure, was the first flagship initiative of PM Modi and stemmed from his own deeply held convictions rather than external expert recommendations.

The initial step was to establish the Jan Dhan scheme in 2014, followed by providing a legal framework for Aadhaar which happened in 2015-16. The new telecom policy of 2015 then enabled the Jan-Dhan Aadhaar and Mobile (JAM) trinity, which fundamentally transformed India by integrating the poorest individuals into formal financial systems. The JAM trinity played a crucial role in the successful implementation of the Jan Dhan scheme.

One of its key achievements was facilitating Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) in 2014, which effectively eliminated the humiliation of standing in long queues to access rightful benefits and contributed significantly to

poverty alleviation.

Secondly, the JAM trinity streamlined the disbursement of Mudra Loans in 2015. These collateral-free, affordable loans put an end to the dominance of informal sector loan sharks and the cycle of perpetual debt. To date, over 46 crore loans have been issued, according to available data.

Thirdly, the JAM trinity supported the implementation of a comprehensive social security system introduced by the government. This system, which includes life insurance, accident insurance, and pension schemes, reached more than 50 crore people who had previously been underserved. According to data, over 45 crore individuals are now beneficiaries of these programmes.

The PM Awaas Yojana is the fourth key area where the JAM trinity made a significant impact. Jan Dhan ensured that subsidies were effectively delivered to the intended, targeted, and deserving beneficiaries. To date, over 4 crore homes have been allocated under this scheme. The fifth significant role of the JAM trinity was in crop insurance. The PM Fasal Bima Yojana, launched in 2016, succeeded where previous schemes had failed, primarily because it ensured that farmers received their insurance payouts when needed. According to experts, over 8 crore farmers have been covered under this scheme to date.

Drunk civic volunteer in Kolkata held for running bike into RG Kar protester

and businesses in the areas surrounding the lake.

Politicians, some IAS and IPS officers, judges, prominent businessmen, and celebrities are among the residents who have been issued notices.

Durgam Cheruvu, often referred to as ‘Secret Lake,’ is a popular spot in the IT hub. Once spread over 100 acres, the lake has shrunken over the years due to construction activity around the lake since the mid-1990s when the development of IT cluster began.

The notice to the Chief Minister’s brother was issued the day after the Chief Minister vowed to demolish illegal constructions even if they belong to him or his family.

"CM Revanth Reddy challenges KTR, vows to demolish illegal constructions including his own or his family," Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy boldly declared.

Kolkata, Aug 31 (IANS) A civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police was arrested on Saturday for allegedly hitting a protesting student with his motorcycle in an inebriated state on Friday evening.

The incident took place when a group of students were protesting against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital and the motorcycle hit one of them.

The civic volunteer has been identified as Gangasagar Golde. Incidentally, the sole arrested accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case Sanjay Roy was also a civic volunteer attached with the city police.

A complaint has also been registered against one traffic sergeant Tarakeswar Puri, who was spotted getting engaged in a verbal spat with the protesting

students after the latter surrounded the motorcycleborne civic volunteer after he allegedly hit one of the protesters. A video of the entire event had gone viral, IANS, however, could not cross check the authenticity of the video.

On late Friday evening a group of former students of Rabindra Bharati University were protesting against the rape and murder incident at BT Road in the northern outskirts of Kolkata, when the motorcycle-borne civic volunteer allegedly hit one of them.

The other protesters immediately surrounded him and started protesting.

Although initially the civic volunteer tried to argue with the protesters, at a later stage he was seen apologising to them, in the viral video. However, the protesters refused to let him go.

“We have been pardoning for a long time and that exactly has resulted in the current situation,” one of the protesters was heard saying in the video.

Thousands of trade workers join strikes over Australian government’s union takeover

Canberra, Aug 27 (IANS) Tens of thousands of trade workers have walked off job sites across Australia in protest against the federal government's takeover of the construction union.

Members of the Construction, Forestry, and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) as well as the electrical, manufacturing, and plumbers' unions stopped work in major cities on Tuesday and joined rallies supporting the CFMEU, Xinhua news agency reported.

On Friday, the government placed all branches of the

construction arm of the CFMEU into administration, effective immediately, removing 270 union officers from volunteer positions and 11 from paid jobs amid allegations of widespread corruption and links to organized crime within the union.

It came after parliament earlier in August passed legislation allowing the government to take control of the construction union for a minimum of three years.

On Tuesday, workers gathered in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Cairns in protest against the takeover, putting building projects at a standstill.

Speaking at a press conference earlier on Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned there would be consequences for workers who participated in unprotected

industrial action, saying that the government's actions were in the interests of all trade unionists.

"You need to have unions in the building industry, it's a dangerous industry," Albanese, who leads the union-linked Labor Party, said. "What we want to do, though, is to make sure that their union is free of corruption."

Addressing protesters in Melbourne, Troy Gray, secretary of the Electrical Trade Unions in the state of Victoria, said that unions were considering legal challenges to the government's legislation.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the government expected some blowback from the union laws but called for protesters to remain peaceful and calm.

Australians to be compensated for cancelled, delayed flights amid aviation crackdown

Canberra, Aug 26 (IANS)

Australians will be entitled to cash refunds for cancelled or unreasonably delayed flights under a landmark government crackdown on the aviation industry.

Transport Minister Catherine King handed down the government's anticipated Aviation White Paper on Monday, setting out a new Charter of Customer Rights that establishes a regime for fair and appropriate treatment of customers, Xinhua news agency reported. A new aviation industry

ombudsman will be established to enforce the charter, entitling airline customers to refunds for flights that are disrupted, cancelled or unreasonably delayed.

"Too many Australians have been left out to dry when flights are cancelled or disrupted, and it's impossibly complex to get a refund or even contact a company representative," King said.

"Customers deserve their money back if they are owed it."

The White Paper includes 56 policies setting the direction for the aviation industry, including new minimum standards for airlines to make their services more accessible to people with a disability.

Industry competition will also be increased with reforms to make it easier for new airlines to

obtain slots at Australian airports and a modernised compliance regime with penalties for anticompetitive behaviours.

The ombudsman will be able to refer misconduct allegations for investigation and enforcement.

The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) will publish more data on airline performance and competition.

According to BITRE data, 71.1 per cent of domestic flights in Australia arrived within 15 minutes of schedule in July compared to the long-term average of 80.9 per cent.

Three per cent of domestic flights were cancelled in July compared to the long-term average of 2.2 per cent.

King said that an interim ombudsman will be appointed shortly.

Australian PM commits new funding for Great Barrier Reef Aquarium

Aug 23 (IANS)

Australia's Prime Minister

has committed funding to rebuild the Great Barrier Reef

and education centre.

Albanese on Friday announced 100 million Australian dollars ($ 67 million) in government funding for the refurbishment of the aquarium, Xinhua news agency reported.

Known as Reef HQ, the aquarium in the north Queensland city of Townsville has served as the National Education Centre for the Reef since it was opened in 1987 and is the world's largest living coral reef display.

It was closed in 2021 by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) for a two-year government-funded 80 million AUD ($53.6 million) refurbishment. However, the authority in November 2022 announced it would demolish the aquarium tank and rebuild it by 2026, calling for additional government funding for the project.

Governments commit new funding to protect Australians from natural disasters

Canberra, Aug 28 (IANS)

Australia's federal, state and territory governments have committed new funding for projects to improve the nation's natural disaster defence.

Jenny McAllister, Minister for Emergency Management, announced on Wednesday that 164 projects will share in 387 million Australian dollar ($262.7 million) in funding under an initiative to better protect Australians from natural disasters, Xinhua news agency reported.

Of the funding, 200 million AUD ($136 million) will come from the second round of distributions from the Disaster Ready Fund (DRF), with the rest to be contributed by the states and territories.

McAllister said that Australians should expect more frequent and intense natural disasters as a result of climate change.

"By working with all levels of government to make significant investments in mitigation projects, we are reducing the risks and impacts Australians face during disasters," she said.

"This means better outcomes for communities while reducing clean up and recovery costs."

Established in 2023, the DRF is the federal government's flagship initiative to improve natural disaster resilience and risk reduction.

Projects that were awarded funding on Wednesday include levee upgrades, coastline restoration and warning system upgrades.

An emergency evacuation centre in the state of Western Australia will receive 15.7 million AUD ($10.6 million) for upgrade works to make it cyclone-ready, while 6.8 million AUD ($4.6 million) has been allocated for flood works in western New South Wales.

Over 1,600 arrested in major drug crackdown in Australia, New Zealand

Canberra, Aug 27 (IANS) Police across Australia and New Zealand have arrested more than 1,600 people in a major anti-crime operation.

Authorities on Tuesday revealed that 1,611 drug-related arrests were made, and narcotics with a total street value of 93 million Australian dollars (US$62.9 million) were seized between August 19-23 in a week of action targeting the illicit drug trade and organised crime activity in the two countries.

Albanese said in a statement on Friday that the 180 million AUD ($120.7 million) in total government funding would allow work to begin on rebuilding the exhibit as a purpose-built facility that will be able to provide immersive experiences to domestic and international visitors.

"We want to create the Great Barrier Reef on land, making the Reef accessible and affordable while spreading the Reef conservation message and inspiring action to protect this spectacular natural icon," he said.

Reef HQ attracted 4.5 million visitors between 1987 and 2021.

A total of 528 search warrants were executed across Australia and New Zealand under Operation Vitreus - a joint initiative between all Australian state and territory police forces as well as federal agencies and New Zealand Police, reports Xinhua news agency.

Police laid 2,692 drug-related charges during the operation and seized 71 guns and over 2.2 million Australian dollars in cash.

The latest report from the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program, which was published by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) in July, revealed that Australians' consumption of illicit

drugs has increased to record levels.

Based on an analysis of wastewater samples collected from 56 sites across Australia between December 2023 and February 2024, the report found record-high consumption of cocaine and methamphetamine in capital cities and regional areas.

Katie Willis, acting executive director of Covert Collections and Insights at ACIC, said on Tuesday that the agency is concerned about the increasingly diverse range of illicit drug threats to the community and is driving a law enforcement response to the growing threat of nitazenes - a potent synthetic opioid.

"Nitazenes pose a greater threat to the Australian community than fentanyl. We have seen a rise in overdoses, some of which have been fatal, adulteration of other drugs, and links to serious and organised crime," she said in a statement.

The Operation Vitreus arrests included that of a Canadian national who was apprehended and charged by the Australian Federal Police for allegedly attempting to import 15 kg of methamphetamine via Sydney International Airport.

In South Australia, a 26-yearold man was charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of controlled drugs after officers seized 1,100 doses of the hallucinogen lysergic acid diethylamide.

Modi’s visit, Poland President travels to Kyiv for Ukraine’s I-Day celebrations

Aug

Poland, travelled to Kyiv on Saturday to take part in celebrations of the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine's Independence.

"Your Independence Day is, in a sense, also a celebration of the independence of all of Central Europe. Because without an independent Ukraine, it is difficult to think about an independent and safe Poland, Lithuania or other countries in our region," said the Polish leader during the main celebrations held in Sofia Square along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Duda emphasised that in 1991 Poland was the first country in the world to officially recognise the independence of Ukraine.

"From the very beginning we supported your pro-Western aspirations. Poles supported you during the Orange Revolution and also during Euromaidan," he stated during his address at the Sofia Square.

The Polish President's office mentioned that the leader also pointed out that for over two years the Ukrainian nation has been heroically fighting for its country, and "paying the highest price" for it.

"In this most difficult trial, you are not alone. Poland has supported, supports and will continue to support your righteous fight until the victorious end," said Duda.

The Polish President's visit to Kyiv came within a few hours of Prime

Minister Narendra Modi's historic trip to the Ukrainian capital on Friday.

PM Modi had also held discussions, including on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Duda in Warsaw on Thursday.

After his arrival in Kyiv on board 'Rail Force One' Saturday morning, the President of Poland laid flowers at the Wall of Remembrance of those who died for Ukraine. President Duda had previously – in 2016 and 2021 – taken part in the celebrations of the adoption of the Act of Independence of Ukraine.

"Today, we celebrate the 33rd Independence Day of Ukraine. We are confident that Ukrainians will always celebrate this holiday in their free capital and within their own sovereign state," Zelensky said during his speech at the Sofia Square on Saturday.

PM Modi invites Ukraine President to India, Zelensky accepts

India

accepted the invitation. During his talks with Zelensky, PM Modi reaffirmed India's principled position and commitment to a peaceful settlement to the ongoing RussiaUkraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. He also reiterated India's readiness to contribute in "all possible ways" to facilitate the speedy return of peace in the region.

Later, in a press briefing after the talks between the two leaders, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that PM Modi had invited President Zelensky to visit India and the latter had accepted saying he would be happy to visit the "big and great" country.

PM Modi had invited President Zelensky to India during the

wide-ranging talks between the two leaders on Friday.

PM Modi’s visit to Kyiv amid tight security was the first-ever trip to Ukraine by an Indian PM since it became independent over three decades ago.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told the media,

“It's significant that our prime minister has visited Ukraine for the first time since 1992. It is natural on such occasions that he extends an invitation, which he did in this case.

“So we expect that at some point, as per his convenience, President Zelensky will visit India."

The joint statement issued at the end of the visit also mentioned that the Indian PM had invited the Ukrainian President to visit India.

Asked by the media about PM Modi's invitation, President Zelensky said he would be happy to visit India at a mutually convenient time.

"Yes because when you begin a strategic partnership, and you begin some dialogue, I think that you don't need to waste time and do a big pause and that's why I think it will be good to meet together again," he said.

The Ukrainian President also said he wants India to be on the side of his country in the war with Russia.

"I read a lot about your big and great country. It's very interesting. I very much need your country on our side. I will be happy to come to India as soon as your government and Prime Minister will be ready to see me," Zelensky said.

However, the President made it clear that the visit would depend on the situation in the warravaged nation.

In Tonga, India reaffirms multifaceted engagement with Pacific island countries

Nuku'alofa (Tonga), Aug 29 (IANS) India will undertake one 'Quick Impact Project' or QIP of each country's choice worth USD 50,000 in each of the 14 Pacific island countries, Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs

Pabitra Margherita announced at the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Dialogue Partners' Session in Tonga on Thursday.

Reaffirming India's strong commitment to work closely with Pacific partner countries and the PIF as the foremost regional mechanism, Margherita highlighted that the bilateral development partnership in the form of grant-in-aid projects

worth about USD 3 million per annum is demand-driven and has had a high impact on the 14 Pacific partner countries.

The Indian government's approach to the Blue Pacific Continent, he said in his statement at the forum, is based on the country's ancient philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', or the 'World is one Family'.

"India's multifaceted engagement with the Blue Pacific Continent is anchored in our Act East Policy and is strengthened both bilaterally and through different mechanisms such as the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC)," he said.

He reminded the leaders attending the meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a 12-point action plan during the third FIPIC Summit

held in Papua New Guinea, last year.

This included the setting up of a 100-bedded regional Superspecialty Hospital in Suva (Fiji), a Regional IT and Cyber Security Training Hub in Papua New Guinea, 1000 Scholarships over the next five years, a supply of Dialysis Units, and Generic Medicine Pharmacy outlets.

"Our Pacific friends have benefited from the India-UN Development Partnership Fund which supports demanddriven sustainable development projects such as the Parametric Microinsurance project in Fiji, the Construction of the water cistern in Tuvalu and the solarisation of the Langafonua building of Tonga’s National Council for Women which will be commissioned on Friday," the MoS stated.

It was during the 2023 summit held in Port Moresby that the leaders of the small island countries called themselves "victims of global powerplay" and called on PM Modi to further elevate issues of concern to the region on the global stage.

"We hosted the 3rd Voice of the Global South Summit (VOGSS) a few days back with the overarching theme of 'An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future'. This summit was joined by more than 120 countries including many PIF members and provided valuable inputs," Margherita said on Thursday.

He also mentioned that India shares the concerns of Pacific island countries regarding the threat posed by climate change and rising sea levels and has successfully reduced

the emission intensity vis-a-vis its GDP by 33 per cent between 2005 and 2019, thus achieving the initial Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) target for 2030, 11 years ahead of the scheduled time.

India, he said, remains committed to responding to the vulnerabilities caused by natural hazards in the Pacific.

"India leads a number of global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Green Grids Initiative -- One Sun, One World, One Grid, the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS), the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and the Global Biofuel Alliance which benefit our Pacific partners," the minister mentioned.

Former minister recalls how PM Modi’s ‘exceptional leadership’ secured safe passage for Indian students stuck in Ukraine warzone

New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) Just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's historic first visit to Kyiv, V. Muraleedharan, the former Minister of State for External Affairs, on Friday recalled the Indian PM's "decisive leadership during the 2022 evacuation of Indian students from war-torn areas of Ukraine.

In an interview given to ''Modi Story', Muraleedharan remembered that elections in Uttar Pradesh were underway when the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in February 2022.

"Despite his heavy political engagements, Prime Minister Modi took time out to address the crisis. He held meetings twice a day, in the morning and after returning from campaign events. Throughout the day, he was actively involved in campaigning, and in the evening he conducted late-night meetings. Despite his busy schedule, he led from the front in solving the problems," said the former minister.

"One remarkable instance of his exceptional leadership was when he personally negotiated to secure safe passage for students, who travelled for more than 18 hours through the conflict zone to reach the border," he added.

Hundreds of Indian students were stuck in Kharkiv as full-scale military offensive began in the region during the last stages of the evacuation exercise.

"We were unable to get them out, as the roads were damaged. The nearest border was Russia's eastern border, but taking them there was a problem. Our mission officials were waiting at the borders. If we had to take them to the western border, it

would have been an 18-20 hour journey. We felt this was going to be a big issue, but the PM did not lose hope; he negotiated and discussed with the Russians," he said.

The former minister at the Ministry of External Affairs further informed, that as the Russia stopped shelling for a limited period of time, an officer from the ministry travelled to the warzone and a large group of Indian students were taken out in 8-9 buses. They reached the country's eastern border after an arduous 18-20 hour bus journey.

"We were not expecting that. We thought that the PM will find a way to bring them to the western border".

The tense situation between Russia and Ukraine escalated into full conflict on February 24, 2022.

The evacuation of Indian nationals, especially from the heavily-shelled areas like Kharkiv and Sumy, was a significant challenge.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told the parliament in March 2022 that the evacuation of Indians finally materialised because of PM Modi's "personal intervention" with the Presidents of Ukraine and Russia.

Operation Ganga was one of the most challenging evacuation exercises during an ongoing conflict situation. It posed massive logistical challenges and was undertaken at a time when military actions including air strikes and shelling were underway. The exercise involved movement in a war-torn situation in a large country, at times over a 1000 km. It also required exiting border check points that were clogged by an estimated 26 lakh refugees.

Prime Minister Modi will reach Kyiv on Friday where he will hold discussions with President

Volodymyr Zelensky, including on the ongoing conflict.

As New Delhi continues to encourage peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, PM Modi had met the Ukrainian President on the sidelines of the 50th G7 Summit in Italy's Apulia on June 14, terming the discussions as "very productive". During the meeting, PM Modi reiterated that India would continue to do everything within its means to support a peaceful solution to the conflict.

"Had a very productive meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. India is eager to further cement bilateral relations with Ukraine. Regarding the ongoing hostilities, reiterated that India believes in a human-centric approach and believes that the way to peace is through dialogue and diplomacy," PM Modi posted on X after meeting Zelensky. Zelensky had also dialled PM Modi, congratulating him on his election victory and hoping that the Indian PM will visit Ukraine soon.

"Everyone in the world recognises the significance and weight of India's role in global affairs. It is critical that we all work together to ensure a just peace for all nations," the Ukrainian President had posted on X before calling PM Modi following the announcement of results of the Lok Sabha elections.

Since the start of the RussiaUkraine war, India has maintained its consistent position that allows it to reach out to both sides to find a solution to the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue.

At the same time, New Delhi has dispatched tonnes of humanitarian assistance to Kyiv, including essential medicines and medical equipment.

Islamabad, Aug 29 (IANS)

Pakistan on Thursday formally confirmed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting being held in Islamabad in mid-October.

Kinshasa, Aug 28 (IANS) At least 610 people were killed due to monkeypox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), said Health Minister Roger Kamba.

The minister urged the population to adhere to protective measures, especially with the upcoming school year in early September, and to get vaccinated as soon as vaccines become available, Xinhua news agency reported.

The country has reported 17,801 suspected cases so far. Suspected cases are being reported in conflict-affected

provinces that host the majority of the country's 7.3 million internally displaced people, which risks "worsening an already untenable situation for a population devastated by decades of conflict," said a statement released Tuesday by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

On Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a Global Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan for monkeypox also known as mpox to end human-to-human transmission of smallpox through coordinated efforts at global, regional, and national levels.

"The mpox outbreaks in the DRC and neighbouring countries can be controlled, and can be stopped," said WHO DirectorGeneral Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

‘Boring, rambled incoherently’, Trump on Kamala Harris

New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) Republican presidential candidate and former US President Donald Trump on Friday slammed his rival Kamala Harris over her first major interview since her entry into the election after Joe Biden's exit.

"I just saw Comrade Kamala Harris' answer to a very weaklyphrased question, a question that was put in more as a matter of defense than curiosity, but her answer rambled incoherently, and declared her "values haven't changed...," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social media platform.

tense since August 5, 2019, when India abrogated the Constitution's Article 370, changing the status of Jammu and Kashmir.

It is expected that PM Modi may depute a ministerial delegation to represent India as the SCO meeting does not require heads of state to participate. In the past as well, SCO CHG meetings have seen India represented by ministers and the same pattern is this time as well.

PM Modi had not also attended the SCO's 24th annual summit of heads of state held in Kazakhstan on July 3-4 this year and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had represented India in Astana. Pakistani analysts say they do not expect that PM Modi will come to Pakistan for the meeting.

"...On that I agree, her values haven't changed - The Border is going to remain open, not closed, there will be Free Healthcare for Illegal Aliens, Sanctuary Cities, No Cash Bail, Gun Confiscation, Zero Fracking, a Ban on GasolinePowered Cars, Private Healthcare will be abolished, a 70-80% tax rate will be put in place, and she will Defund the Police. America will become a WASTELAND," Trump added.

He said Harris "rambled incoherently" in the interview, and branded the interview 'boring'.

In another post, he also said he "looks so forward" to debating Kamala Harris and "exposing her for the fraud she is".

"Harris has changed every one of her long held positions, on everything. America will never allow an election WEAPONIZING

MARXIST TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE US," he wrote.

On Thursday, US Vice-President Kamala Harris said her “values have not changed” as she has changed her position on key issues that could determine her elections, such as fracking, which she had once opposed and now doesn’t.

She said this during an interview with CNN. Fracking, a process of extracting natural gas and petroleum from deep inside rocks, is popular in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state that will determine the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, along with a handful of other such states. It is opposed by those who argue it contaminates underground and surface water. Harris had opposed it earlier and said it should be banned.

“No, and I made that clear on the debate stage in 2020 that I would not ban fracking as vice president,” Harris said when asked if she would ban the practice. “I did not ban fracking as vice president. I will not ban fracking…. In 2020 I made very clear where I stand. We are in 2024 and I've not changed that position, nor will I be going forward. I kept my word, and I will keep my word.”

“What made you change that position at the time?” the interviewer asked.

“Well, let's be clear, my values have not changed,” the vice president answered.

This interview was Harris’s first after taking over the Democratic ticket for the White House amidst questions about her candidacy raised by Donald Trump and his allies, who attacked her for avoiding unscripted interactions with reporters.

From the editor’s desk Cap on international students

A necessary adjustment or economic misstep

Australia’s decision to cap international student enrolments has sparked a heated debate within the higher education sector. With the government setting a cap of 270,000 new enrolments for 2025, the move has been framed as a strategy to curb the surge in migration that has strained the nation’s housing and infrastructure. Yet, this decision comes with complex implications for the future of Australia’s higher education institutions and its broader economic landscape.

The cap is more than just a number; it represents a shift in policy aimed at restoring prepandemic levels of migration while addressing some of the sector's challenges that were magnified during the pandemic. The restrictions imposed on each institution, with vocational education and training providers bearing the brunt of the cuts, reflect the government's intention to tighten control over the quality and focus of international education in Australia. By limiting the influx of students, the government hopes to ensure that those who do come are genuinely committed to their studies rather than viewing Australia as a backdoor route to employment.

Critics, however, have not held back in their response, labelling the move as "economic vandalism." They argue that international students are a lifeline for Australian universities, particularly after the severe financial hit these institutions took during the pandemic. The number of international students is already 10% higher than pre-Covid levels, a recovery that many see as vital to the economic stability of the higher education sector. By capping enrolments, critics fear that the government is stifling this recovery, potentially leading to significant revenue losses and impacting the viability of several educational institutions.

On the other side of the debate, the government defends its decision by pointing to the broader benefits of this cap. The policy aims to enhance the quality and longevity of the sector by ensuring that the influx of international students does not dilute academic standards. The cap is seen as a mechanism to weed out unethical practices that have plagued some corners of the sector, such as the acceptance of students who lack the necessary language skills or those who

enrol with the primary intention of working rather than studying. By tightening these controls, the government argues that it will preserve the integrity of Australia’s education system, making it more sustainable in the long run.

Moreover, the cap is part of a broader strategy to manage Australia’s record migration levels, which have put unprecedented pressure on housing and infrastructure. By controlling the number of international students, the government aims to ease these pressures, making it easier for the country to accommodate new arrivals without exacerbating existing shortages. This is particularly crucial in a post-pandemic world where housing markets are tight, and infrastructure needs are growing.

The policy also includes incentives for universities to build more housing for international students, an initiative that could help address one of the most pressing issues faced by these students upon their arrival in Australia. However, the effectiveness of this incentive remains to be seen, particularly if the financial strain caused by the cap forces universities to cut back on their investments in student accommodations.

The cap on enrolments also raises important questions about the future of Australia’s higher education sector. While public universities will be limited to 145,000 enrolments in 2025, private universities and vocational institutions will face even stricter caps. This could lead to increased competition among institutions for the limited number of spots available, potentially driving up tuition fees and making it even more difficult for international students to afford an education in Australia.

Furthermore, the cap could have long-term implications for Australia’s global standing. By limiting the number of students who can study in Australia, the government risks pushing these students to seek education elsewhere, in countries that offer more favourable policies and fewer restrictions. This could weaken Australia’s competitive edge in the global education market, with far-reaching consequences for the country’s economy and international reputation.

Kongsberg’s new missile plant: A strategic leap for Australia’s defence and sovereignty

The establishment of Kongsberg’s missile production plant in Newcastle, New South Wales is a significant milestone in Australia’s defence strategy and industrial capability. As the first Kongsberg plant outside of Norway, this facility is not just a testament to the growing partnership between Australia and the Norwegian defence giant but also a crucial step towards enhancing Australia’s defence sovereignty, strategic autonomy, and regional security posture.

The missile manufacturing is projected to commence by 2027. The plant will serve as a vital node in Australia’s defence infrastructure. The Australian government’s substantial investment of up to A$850 million underscores the importance of this venture, which is poised to deliver long-term benefits not only in terms of defence capabilities but also through economic stimulation and technological advancement.

The geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific region has become increasingly complex and uncertain, with rising tensions and military posturing among key players. In this context, Australia’s decision to localize missile production is a strategic move aimed at bolstering its defence posture. By producing and servicing Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) and Joint Strike Missiles (JSM) domestically, Australia is taking a significant step towards reducing its reliance on foreign suppliers and enhancing its ability to respond swiftly to emerging threats.

The importance of this move cannot be overstated. In an era where supply chain disruptions are becoming more frequent, having a local facility for critical defence assets like strike missiles ensures that Australia’s defence forces are not left vulnerable due to delays or geopolitical complications. This shift towards self-reliance is a clear indication of Australia’s intent to assert greater control over its defence capabilities, a move that is likely to be welcomed by both domestic stakeholders and international allies.

Moreover, the strategic autonomy that comes with local missile production enables Australia to tailor its defence capabilities to its specific needs. The NSM and JSM are advanced, precision-

guided missiles that enhance the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) ability to conduct long-range strikes, thus significantly boosting its deterrence capabilities. In a region where military balance is constantly in flux, having the capacity to independently produce such advanced weaponry gives Australia a crucial edge. Beyond the immediate defence benefits, this venture with Kongsberg opens the door to significant technological advancement within Australia’s defence industry. By collaborating with a global leader in missile technology, Australia stands to gain invaluable knowledge and expertise. This transfer of technology and skills can stimulate innovation within the local defence sector, paving the way for future advancements and potentially positioning Australia as a leader in missile technology in the Asia-Pacific region.

The economic impact of the Kongsberg plant is another crucial aspect that merits attention. The construction and operation of the plant will create numerous jobs in Newcastle, a region that, like many others, has been seeking new avenues for economic growth. The plant is expected to generate employment not just in direct missile production roles but also in related industries, thereby providing a significant boost to the local economy. This influx of skilled jobs will also contribute to the development of a highly trained workforce, further strengthening Australia’s defence industrial base.

Furthermore, the economic benefits extend beyond mere job creation. The presence of a stateof-the-art missile production facility in Australia could attract additional investments in the defence sector, leading to the growth of a robust defence manufacturing ecosystem. This ecosystem could potentially drive innovation and competitiveness, not just within the defence industry but across other sectors as well, as technological advancements often have broader applications.

However, the establishment of the Kongsberg plant also carries broader implications for regional security. In a region characterized by strategic competition and growing militarization, Australia’s move to enhance its missile capabilities sends a clear message about its commitment to safeguarding its national interests and contributing to regional stability. By developing a robust, indigenous missile production capability, Australia is not only strengthening its own defence but also signalling its intent to play a more active role in the security dynamics of the Indo-Pacific. This development is likely to be viewed positively by Australia’s allies, particularly those who

share concerns about the evolving security landscape in the region.

The ability to produce and maintain advanced strike missiles locally makes Australia a more capable and reliable partner in joint defence initiatives, such as those under the Australia-United States alliance. It also aligns with the broader trend of regional powers seeking to bolster their defence capabilities in response to the growing assertiveness of certain state actors.

But there are many challenges associated with this move.

The decision to build a missile production plant on Australian soil may draw criticism from those who advocate for a more pacifist approach to international relations. There is also the question of how this development will be perceived by neighbouring countries, some of whom may view it as a sign of increased militarization in the region.

Balancing the need for robust defence capabilities with the maintenance of peaceful and cooperative regional relations will be a key challenge for Australia moving forward.

Moreover, the successful execution of this project will require careful management and coordination between Kongsberg and Australian authorities.

The timeline for construction, commissioning, and eventual production is ambitious, and any delays could have implications for Australia’s defenceplanning. Ensuring that the plant is completed on time and that the production process meets the highest standards of quality and efficiency will be crucial to the success of this venture.

The Kongsberg plant represents a strategic shift in how Australia approaches its defence and security needs. It is a move that reflects the growing recognition that in an increasingly volatile world, reliance on external suppliers for critical defence assets can be a significant vulnerability. By taking control of its missile production capabilities, Australia is not only enhancing its defence sovereignty but also positioning itself as a key player in the regional security landscape.

As construction of the plant begins, the eyes of both domestic and international observers will be on Newcastle. The successful establishment of this facility will be a major milestone for Australia’s defence industry, signalling a new era of selfreliance and strategic autonomy. In a world where the ability to independently produce advanced defence systems is becoming increasingly important, Australia’s partnership with Kongsberg could prove to be a defining moment in its journey towards a more secure and self-sufficient future.

Effective supervision is a prerequisite of good public administration

New Delhi: The brutal gang rape and murder of a young doctor at the state-owned RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata where she was taking rest at night after a gruelling schedule, the unfortunate drowning of three Civil Service aspirants in the basement of a coaching centre in the national capital and one more death of a child who fell in an open manhole in a state capital, illustrate how right across the governance at the levels closest to the people, there was a complete absence of accountability for those managing the public institutions and services on the ground.

Amid nationwide public protests in the first case, what was being revealed is that many things were coming in the way of a robust system of supervisory responsibilities being fixed at the local levels where the efficiency of public delivery was really tested. There is no fear of law and punishment and since the onus of law and order management is squarely on the shoulders of state governments, it is time they are questioned by the Centre and the people at large for any serious failures on that front.

Vulnerable institutions like hospitals with free public access that employed hundreds of young women doctors and nurses invite questions of security and woman safety and it would be considered a grave failure of the head of that establishment if no thought was given to those issues at all.

The Kolkata rape-murder case goes beyond a mere management failure and if it indicates criminal negligence, the postevent probe would be able to

examine that. Inadequacy of an effort made is one thing but a total absence of attention to the security dimensions of a sensitive establishment like a big hospital, is unacceptable.

There is a crisis of supervision in general because, in the hierarchy of governance, people at the top -- whether in administration or the Police -- were often busy managing their own positions with little time left for them to fulfil their prime responsibility of improving the performance of the system they presided over.

A Chief Secretary might not feel connected with the performance of revenue officials of the district just as a Director General of Police might not consider improving the working of the police station to be a part of his direct responsibilities.

The 'steel frame' of governance had to have a stronger commitment to the cause of public service -- this was highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his recent addresses to the bureaucracy and the Police.

More importantly, however, it is the lack of awareness of the safety and security of the enterprise or organisation on the part of the top man that generally brought down the standards of management of establishments across the board.

The head of an organisation has to have certain traits of leadership which could be ignored -- as in the case of an appointment being influenced by politics -- only at the cost of wider national interest somewhere.

The incidents of Kolkata, Delhi and Lucknow mentioned earlier highlight the incompetence of

local management for reasons of flawed selection, lack of training and absence of organisational briefing.

Governance in India is primarily in the hands of the state governments and there are many spheres where it needs to improve -- law and order management comes high on the priority list.

The closer one moves to the ground in the official hierarchy, the weaker the function of supervision and the spirit of team discipline. When a child falls into an open manhole and dies, this should be a matter of state-level probe into why this unacceptable tragedy occurs at all.

The municipal functionary in charge of the team of workers attending to the drainage problem of the area should have been the first to be suspended because it was his direct responsibility to ensure that if the manhole was left open after the day's work was called off, it was surrounded by a protective improvised perimeter warning the people about the danger.

In all probability, the functionary in charge of the team of municipal workers had not the faintest awareness that leaving the manhole open was hazardous for public safety. That the smallest local-level management failure could have the effect of even tarring the image of the country, would be the farthest from the thought processes of even the district administration.

Somewhere the Collector of the district, who was the ultimate monitor of the public service works in the district, should be broadly aware of the flaws that could creep into the execution of all such projects at the ground level.

The malaise is that all officials in the field looked up to protect their interests -- not downwards to try to measure up to their accountability. This is what the crisis of supervision is all about.

The lowest placed 'regulators' in the field -- 'food' inspectors, 'drainage' supervisors or the 'beat'

constable of the Police Outpost -- are supposed to perform functions that in a democratic regime were as important as a successful governance of the state since they 'deliver' a service to the people directly.

In the debate on Centrestate relations and division of responsibility between the state government and municipal bodies -- these often acquired political hues -- the efficiency and promptness of this 'delivery' were seriously damaged.

In the case of the death of three young UPSC aspirants by drowning in the basement of a known coaching centre in Delhi -- they had joined it to compete for Civil Services -- the question was whether the local authority had permitted it to run such an institute and also if the owner of the centre was guilty of criminal negligence in failing to provide an emergency exit for those attending the class in the basement -- particularly when the premises were known to be prone to flooding in heavy rains.

Failure of local government functionaries and 'Inspectors' is mostly rooted in corruption which raised the question of whether the head of the concerned organisation had taken any steps to establish a 'vigilance' unit to do surprise checks and scrutiny of compliance with the prescribed protocols of ethical practices.

The disquieting case of the gang rape and brutal murder of a young woman doctor in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College-cum-hospital at Kolkata in the dead of the night has shaken the conscience of the nation about what was a total lack of institutional security at this sensitive and vulnerable establishment.

The highest court of the country has taken suo moto cognisance of the Kolkata case examining the role of the Principal of the medical college in the matter of providing safety and security to a large number of women doctors and nurses, who worked at the

hospital, and also seeking from the states information on what security measures had been taken at all medical colleges and hospitals.

The apex court seemed to be keen to define a framework for the future.

It may be mentioned that the stringent Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act passed in 2013, enjoins the head of the organisation to create a functional Internal Committee to deal with any complaints under this Act and prescribes punishment for the top man for any violation of that mandate.

A competent head of a huge medical college-cum-hospital should have understood the importance of basic security and put in place a secure perimeter, access controls and CCTV coverage of the interior.

CCTV coverage has to have a control room for live 24/7 monitoring so that any incident can be responded to without loss of time.

Often the heads of organisations had little time to attend to the issues of safety and security. Even if one enjoyed political patronage this per se did not give a senior functionary freedom not to meet up to one's duties.

The CBI looking into all these aspects of the Kolkata rape case would be expected to place its findings before the Supreme Court. The tragic loss of life that occurred in RG Kar Medical College would not go to waste if the nation wakes up to the unsatisfactory law and order situation in the country and the Centre sees to it that the security of all sensitive establishments in the country is reviewed and fixed for the future on an urgent footing.

I am getting rape threats but they can’t crush my voice: Kangana Ranaut

ahead of her forthcoming film ‘Emergency’ and asserted that her voice can’t be silenced by such intimidatory tactics.

Speaking exclusively to IANS, Kangana Ranaut said, “Kuch logon ne banduke taan di hain, humare maathe pe taan di hain. Banduko se hum darne waale hai nahi (Some people have trained their guns on me but I am not one to get intimidated by bullets and threats).”

“Aaj mujhe rape threats bhi aa rahe hain toh iss tarah se wo meri awaaz nahi daba payenge (I am also getting rape threats, but they can’t suppress my voice),” she added.

Kangana’s remarks apparently came in response to former Punjab MP and chief of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), Simranjit Singh Mann’s rape

remark, where he reportedly said that the actress had “a lot of experience of rape.”

The Bollywood celebrity further told IANS that she was ready to withstand all the “opposition and pressures” for her film’s release and said that she would not be cowed down.

Shedding light on her film’s ‘delayed’ release, she informed that her movie had hit ‘rough weather’ because of the apprehensions and insecurities of some people, however, she was ready to take the battle to a conclusive end.

“An artiste like me can’t be intimidated or silenced. I will fight for my movie and take the

battle even to court, if required,” Kangana told IANS.

She further said that an artiste’s creative liberty can’t be crushed and her film can’t be stopped from release.

“I am not the one who fears bullets and threats. They can’t silence my voice,” she added. Kangana is playing the lead role in the movie ‘Emergency’ based on the action by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

This is not the first movie where she has portrayed a political icon on the silver screen. In Thalaivi (2021 film), she essayed the role of actress-turned-politician late J Jayalalithaa.

MSMEs have become vital supply chains for big industries: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) The micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the country are not only giving employment to millions but also contributing to nation building and becoming vital supply chains to big industries, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Saturday.

Moreover, quality control orders (QCOs) are protecting MSMEs from unfair competition from outside the country, he added.

Addressing the 10th 'India International MSME Startup Expo and Summit 2024' in the national capital, the minister said an

MSME should not be looked upon as merely a small enterprise.

“Innovative ideas and new ways of doing things are the hallmark of the entrepreneurs of MSMEs.

The entire ecosystem around big industries and enterprises comprises of thousands of MSMEs, without whom they cannot succeed,” said Commerce Minister, adding that MSMEs act both as a suppliers and customers of big industries.

The minister highlighted that through QCOs, the government is supporting the MSME sector.

“We are giving time to MSMEs to meet the requirements,” he said, adding that MSMEs will benefit due to two reasons.

“QCOs stop substandard goods imported at strange rates from outside the country and thus helps the MSME sector by protecting it from unfair competition. And secondly, when

MSMEs meet the standards, they can become competitive both nationally and internationally and become profitable,” Minister Goyal informed.

MSMEs also play an important role in tourism and infrastructure development of the country and have a big share in India’s exports. The growth of this sector is vital for the country and a focus area for the government.

The minister said that when 140 crore countrymen get together to contribute in nation building, India will become a developed nation by 2047 and we can ensure prosperity for all.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced term loans for MSMEs for the purchase of machinery and equipment without collateral and guarantee as part of a new scheme. This fund will provide guarantees of up to Rs 100 crore.

For FIIs, India still stands at sweet spot for long-term investment horizon: Experts

Mumbai, Aug 24 (IANS) The trend of foreign institutional investors (FIIs) buying stocks through the primary market and others' category and selling through the exchange continued this week.

Market experts said on Saturday that India still stands at a sweet spot compelling the foreign fraternity to take a bet for a longterm investment horizon.

According to the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) data, FIIs sold equity worth Rs 28,671 crore through the exchanges and bought equity for Rs 12,367 crore via the primary market (till August 23).

FIIs were buyers in telecom and healthcare where the growth and earnings prospects are safe and bright, according to market watchers.

Chandigarh, Aug 23 (IANS) The Greater Chandigarh Region (GCR) is rapidly positioning itself as a premier startup destination in India, driven by a unique blend of strategic location, world-class infrastructure, and an exceptional talent pool from leading universities.

In the first fortnight of August, FIIs were big sellers in financials in the country. Selling was witnessed in many other sectors, including metals on fears that economic slowdown in US and China will keep metal prices soft.

"FIIs were net sellers in metals and mining stocks after the Supreme Court allowed states to levy taxes and royalties on minerals, leading to a rise in operating costs for miners.

Auto stocks have performed well in the past few quarters, prompting some profit booking or rebalancing,” said Vipul Bhowar, Director Listed Investments, Waterfield Advisors.

The pharmaceutical sector is bullish due to better-thanexpected earnings and a strategic shift towards complex drugs.

The FMCG sector is also attracting investors, driven by a significant recovery in rural consumption, supported by favourable monsoon forecasts and government welfare measures

As the region gains momentum, collaborative efforts among government bodies, educational institutions, and industry leaders are paving the way for innovation and growth.

The CII Chandigarh Startup Conclave 2024, organised on Friday at the CII Northern Region headquarters, showcased these strengths, emphasising the need for continued support through financial incentives and robust infrastructure to realise GCR’s vision as a startup powerhouse.

Market analysts said that amid a global slowdown, geo-political crisis in the middle east and neighbouring countries, India still stands at a sweet spot.

“India’s growth story is largely on the premise that under a stable government regime there would be reforms undertaken which will lead to ease of doing business, a soothing environment for startups, skilling youth and the government’s conviction to place India as a global hub for capital markets,” said Manoj Purohit, Partner and Leader, Financial Services Tax, Tax and Regulatory Services, BDO India.

Given the seamless trading volumes in the capital markets, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have kept the momentum upwards, keeping India on the hotspot in both equity and debt segment.

together key stakeholders, including industry leaders, government representatives, and startup founders, to discuss and deliberate on the future of the GCR as a leading startup hub in India.

The event highlighted the region's emerging status, and the collective efforts required to sustain and accelerate this growth.

During the inaugural session, Hargunjit Kaur, Secretary, Industries, Chandigarh Administration, said, “Chandigarh has a very interesting demographic, and keeping this

The SEBI also fined Ambani Rs 25 crore and prohibited him from holding any position in the securities market, including roles as a director or key managerial personnel in listed companies, for the same duration.

Here are the five key reasons why the markets regulator took this action.

1. The SEBI investigation established the existence of a fraudulent scheme, orchestrated by Anil Ambani and administered by key executives of RHFL, to siphon off funds from the publicly listed company by structuring them as 'loans' to credit unworthy conduit borrowers. These entities have been found to be 'promoterlinked entities' with ties to Ambani.

2. The funds diverted to group companies and related entities amount to Rs 8,800 crore. The loans were given to companies with little to no assets, cash flow, net worth, or revenue. These include firms like Reliance Capital Ltd., Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd., Reliance Power Ltd., and Reliance Infrastructure Ltd.

in view, the administration is deeply committed to creating an all-inclusive startup-enabling ecosystem.

“We understand that for entrepreneurship to flourish, it needs a nurturing ecosystem that provides access to resources, mentorship, and networks. I am excited to share that Chandigarh Startup Policy is at a very advanced stage, and we have done comprehensive stakeholder consultations and expert opinions have been incorporated.

“So as and when the startup policy sees the light of day, I hope it will be a game changer for

3. Most of these borrowers failed to repay loans, leading RHFL to default on its own debt obligations. As a result, the company’s public shareholders have been left high and dry.

4. The market regulator and two forensic audits of PwC, which is the statutory auditor of RHFL, and Grant Thornton, the forensic auditor appointed by Bank of Baroda, which was the lead bank of the consortium of lenders of RHFL, found similar violations.

5. Strong directives from the RHFL board to stop lending practices were ignored by Anil Ambani, who used his position as chairperson of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.

In a 222-page order, SEBI said that Anil Ambani, with the help of RHFL's key managerial personnel, orchestrated a fraudulent scheme to siphon off funds from RHFL by disguising them as loans to entities linked to him.

"The Board of Directors of RHFL issued strong directives to stop such lending practices and reviewed corporate loans regularly but the company's management ignored these orders. This suggests a significant failure of governance, driven by certain key managerial personnel under the influence of Anil Ambani," it stated.

The other 24 entities which have been barred include Amit Bapna, Ravindra Sudhalkar and Pinkesh R. Shah -- former key officials of RHFL. The regulator levied a fine of Rs 27 crore on Bapna, Rs 26 crore on Sudhalkar, and Rs 21 crore on Shah.

The remaining entities -Reliance Unicorn Enterprises, Reliance Exchangenext Lt, Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd, Reliance Cleangen Ltd, Reliance Business Broadcast News Holdings Ltd, and Reliance Big Entertainment Private Ltd -- were imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore each. These fines were levied for "either receiving the illegally obtained loans or acting as intermediaries to facilitate the illegal diversion of funds from RHFL".

Chandigarh.”

Anurag Gupta, Chairman, CII Chandigarh, said, “In the Greater Chandigarh Region, a combination of government initiatives, educational institutions, and a growing network of incubators fosters a thriving environment for innovation.

“Despite challenges such as limited access to venture capital and intense market competition, the region's dynamic community and robust support systems are driving sustained growth.

LNP commits $5 million for multicultural community facilities

THE RIGHT PLAN FOR QUEENSLAND’S FUTURE

$5 million Multicultural Connect grants program to support not-for-profit multicultural community groups over four years.

Grants of up to $500,000 available to upgrade or build community halls, meeting spaces or sporting facilities.

Matched contributions from community groups, as part of the four-year program.

Part of the LNP’s Working Harder for Queensland Plan, the Right Plan for Queensland’s Future.

The LNP has today announced a $5 million boost for multicultural

community groups if elected in October, with Multicultural Connect grants of up to $500,000 to support new and upgraded sports and community facilities.

The program, part of the LNP’s Right Plan for Queensland’s Future and will support Queensland not-for-profit multicultural organisations, many of which have no permanent facilities and operate without ongoing support from government.

The LNP’s commitment, made at a major gathering of Queensland multicultural communities tonight will support Queensland’s diversity and inclusivity.

LNP Leader David Crisafulli,

said the LNP’s Multicultural Connect program would help get more multicultural groups into permanent facilities and build better communities.

“The LNP’s Multicultural Connect will celebrate our diverse and inclusive state with $5 million to help build or upgrade community or sports facilities for multicultural groups,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“Many of our multicultural groups have grown from a few people to large communities without having dedicated or permanent facilities to call home.

“Multicultural Connect will provide support beyond festivals and celebrations,

with infrastructure to connect communities year-round.

“As the son of migrants, I understand how important it is for multicultural groups to have permanent facilities to celebrate together and to support our newest Queenslanders as they build lives here.

“Queensland is stronger and richer for the diversity our multicultural communities bring to our state and the LNP is committed to continuing to build an inclusive Queensland.”

Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism John-Paul Langbroek said the LNP’s $5 million investment would support Queensland’s diverse

multicultural communities.

“The LNP recognises our growing multicultural organisations often don’t have the facilities in place to support their community’s needs, but these grants will allow them to invest in buildings and facilities,” Mr Langbroek said.

“We want our multicultural communities to have the sporting facilities, community halls or meeting venues to come together.

“The LNP’s $5 million investment will be matched by the groups and support existing funding streams for services and events.

“Only the LNP has the Right Plan for Queensland’s Future, including building better communities.”

Kishore Kumar helps India secure firstever Asian Games quota in surfing

Thulusdhoo (Maldives), Aug 24 (IANS) India's Kishore Kumar came up with a superb performance as he helped the country secure a first-ever quota place in the upcoming Asian Games 2026 to be held in AichiNagoya, Japan. Kishore excelled in the U-18 category, after finishing third in the Heat-2 of the semifinal in the Asian Surfing Championships 2024. His performance helped the men's team grab a quota while the women's team too qualified for the mega event to be held in Japan in 2026.

These quotas have been earned based on the ranking points accumulated by the Indian surfers in the championship. Kishore Kumar, who advanced into the championships’ semifinal on Friday, missed out narrowly in a stiff competition but his spectacular performance throughout the tournament ensured that India earned quotas for the Asian Games.

The Asian Surfing Championships 2024, which is a qualifier for the Asian Games 2026, saw eight Indian surfers compete in four different categories.

With multiple national championship titles to his name, the determined Kishore Kumar entered the competition on Saturday against some of Asia’s best surfers in the U-18 Boys

Djokovic calls for ‘clear

category. He finished third in Semifinal Heat 2 with a score of 8.26, just behind Chengzheng Wang of China, who scored 10.00, to place second.

Japanese surfer Taro Takai took first place in the same heat with a score of 14.50. Kishore Kumar, who had previously finished first in Round 1, Round 3, and the quarterfinals, was exceptional throughout the championships.

Harish Muthu, another successful surfer after Kishore in the tournament had also left his marks as he became the first Indian to qualify for the Asian Surfing Championships quarterfinals. However, he fell short in a hard-fought battle. Surfing is one of the 41 sports in which competitions will be held in the 2026 Asian Games.

Ronaldo drops retirement plan, says he’ll probably end his career at Al-Nassr

New Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS) There are not many players in the history of football that have had a career quite like Cristiano Ronaldo. A journey which started in the streets in Madeira is likely to be called curtain upon in Saudi Arabia as confirmed by the AlNassr striker.

the all-time leading top scorer internationally.

The Portugal captain was insistent that, despite being one of the best players in football history, he does not want a farewell tour with the national team and it will be a 'very spontaneous decision'.

"When I leave the national team, I won’t tell anyone beforehand and it will be a very spontaneous decision on my part, but also a well-thought-out one. Right now, what I want most is to help the national team in its upcoming matches. We have the Nations League coming up soon and I would really like to play there," he added.

over doping after Jannik Sinner escapes

New York, Aug 25 (IANS) As the US Open approaches, Paris Olympics gold medalist Novak Djokovic has called for “clear protocols” and “standardised approaches” following the doping controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic voiced his concerns after Sinner, who twice tested positive for a banned substance earlier this year, escaped a ban that has left many in the tennis community questioning the fairness of the system.

Djokovic, speaking ahead of the US Open, echoed these frustrations. “I understand the frustration of the players because of a lack of consistency,” the 24-time Grand Slam champion said. “His case was cleared almost immediately after it was announced, but five or six months

had passed since the news of the positive tests reached him and his team.”

Sinner tested positive for clostebol, a steroid known for its muscle-building properties, in March. The Italian was provisionally suspended but continued playing after successfully appealing.

Last week, a tribunal cleared him of any fault or negligence after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) determined that the substance had been inadvertently transmitted by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.

Naldi, who was using an overthe-counter spray on a cut on his own hand, later treated Sinner, unknowingly contaminating the player. Following the ruling, Sinner ended his professional relationship with both Naldi and fitness trainer Umberto Ferrara.

However, the swift clearance of Sinner, now the top seed at the US Open, has sparked backlash across the sport. Prominent players, including Nick Kyrgios, Liam Broady, and Denis Shapovalov, took to social media to express their dissatisfaction,

ban

suggesting that Sinner may have received special treatment due to his high profile.

Djokovic, a seasoned veteran of the sport at 37, emphasised the need for reform in how tennis handles doping cases. “There are a lot of issues in the system. We see a lack of standardised and clear protocols. I can understand the sentiments of a lot of players questioning whether they are treated the same,” he continued. “Hopefully, the governing bodies of our sport can learn from this case and take a better approach in the future.”

One of the central concerns raised by Djokovic and others is the potential disparity in how doping cases are handled depending on a player’s resources. “The question is whether it’s a matter of funds,” Djokovic pondered. “Can a player afford to pay a significant amount for a law firm that can more efficiently represent their case? That’s something we need to collectively investigate to ensure that every player, regardless of ranking or status, gets the same treatment.”

In the past, many top players transitioned into coaches, with perhaps the best example being Pep Guardiola, who played for FC Barcelona and went on to become one of the greatest coaches in the game.

In current days, the trend has increased significantly, with Xabi Alonso and Mikel Arteta the prime examples. However, Ronaldo dismissed any talk of him taking a managerial role after retirement. "In my mind, at the moment, it is not about being a first team coach, or a coach of any team. I don't see my future being that way. I see myself doing other things outside of football, but only god knows what the future holds," concluded Ronaldo.

Sukanya Ghosh explores belonging, identity as Artist-in-Residence at Royal College of Art

One look at the diverse works produced by her over the last few years, and it is not tough to decipher that at the very soul, her engagement with the world comprises layering, erasure, and collage.

Sukanya Ghosh, the Artistin-Residence at the Senior Artist Residency Programme launched by the Serendipity Arts Foundation and the Royal College of Art (RCA), works through a trajectory of image fragments and tonal complements.

It is the first time in its 120 years of existence that the Royal College of Art, London, has opened its studios to an artist of South Asian origin.

“By juxtaposing different parts of the image and reducing them to a play of line, tone, and colour, I reach a position of abstraction -new landscapes of crisscrossing meanings and overlapping connections.

"While I have been preoccupied with working with discarded photographs from my family archive, I have often used both analogue and digital photographs in my work. I enjoy building up textural and semiotic layers through the use of physical materials such as cloth, paper, paint, thread, plastic, etc,” Ghosh told IANS from London.

Her practice spans painting, photography, animation, and moving images, as her storytelling explores questions of belonging, identity, and place.

For the residency project, Ghosh is using everyday household

and grocery lists from her grandmother’s notebooks as a starting point to deliberate on the larger exploration of travel, displacement, and being somewhere else while deciphering the things that ground individuals.

Memory and found objects have always fascinated Ghosh. She feels that what is remembered is a fragile notion, and she likes to play with this to press forward into thinking about the world around us today.

“Found images and objects carry that slight sense of intrigue and excitement because they are ‘found’, which may mean they might have been lost somehow. I like the mystery of this, and the idea that I can play around with the essential meaning of these things,” said the artist who lives and works between Delhi and Kolkata.

Stressing that her ongoing residency experience has been stimulating and invigorating, she added that it is enjoyable being amid a bustling student community and teaching environment.

“I have used some of the splendid facilities that RCA has and most of all I have found so many new and fresh ideas on artistic practice and the making of work. Besides, I have never believed in adopting a competitive mindset.

“There is a place in the world for all artists. Some take time to flower or gain enough confidence in their work. To expose everyone to a sense that one must immediately find a gallery and

sell work creates a precarious and dangerously fragile ecosystem,” said the occasional design teacher and arts programme manager. For Ghosh, spending time at any residency is always enriching, primarily because it provides an immersion into a different space. This difference can be at diverse levels -- a different country, a different cultural context, a different working process, or even a different way of looking at things.

“This provides a critical breathing space in one’s practice - to step back and look at one’s work in another light,” she said. The artist is spending her time at the residency ruminating on the idea of home, belonging, and identity.

"I am thinking of 'being away' and what it means in various contexts, and trying to chart a path that looks outwards at the larger implications of ‘away’. Who becomes a migrant, a settler, or a traveller? And what are the things that denote ‘home’," she said. Ghosh, who has always believed in the importance of looking inward to look forward, feels that the intimate and the personal are vital to understanding or even approaching larger ideas. And that artists do not live in a vacuum - and sometimes the way of processing the things that occur around them in the world is to examine the minutiae of their lived experience.

“The path forward is to take these learnings to examine the larger implications of what could be. The past... well, it takes us forward into a new fictional space to think of other things like location and identity,” she added.

While India is witnessing the setting-up of several private art foundations and museums, Ghosh feels considering the size of this country, we need many more public and private ones.

“Only then can there be a discourse on fair practices and equal opportunities. There are certainly many more chances that have opened up because of private foundations and museums. But again, we need more,” she concluded.

Breaking Free from Professional Habits

As seasoned professionals, we often pride ourselves on our expertise and accumulated knowledge. However, what if some of that knowledge is holding us back? What if the habits we've developed over decades are actually hindering our progress rather than propelling us forward? My own journey in unlearning, particularly through the lens of my experience with swimming, sheds light on the importance of breaking free from ingrained habits and embracing change in our professional lives. Allow me to share a personal anecdote that resonates deeply with the concept of unlearning. Despite my passion for swimming, I found myself struggling to improve for over four decades. It wasn't because of a lack of effort or determination, but rather because I had learned the wrong techniques at an early age. Swimming alongside friends in a river, I absorbed habits that stuck with me throughout my life, hindering my progress despite my best intentions.

Finally acknowledging the need for change, I enrolled in a beginner's swimming course. The process of unlearning was arduous; it required me to confront not only physical challenges but also the mental resistance to change. Watching others progress while I struggled to undo years of ingrained habits was a humbling experience. Yet, with perseverance and dedication, I began to see incremental improvements.

The parallels between my swimming journey and professional life are striking. Just as I had unknowingly absorbed detrimental habits in swimming,

so too can we pick up negative behaviours in our careers. Our first job, our initial experiences with bosses and colleagues— they all shape our professional identity. Yet, over time, some of these habits can become obstacles to growth and success.

Too often, we attribute our professional challenges to external factors—the current workplace culture, our managers, or the industry itself. Yet, true growth requires introspection and a willingness to unlearn ingrained behaviours that no longer serve us. It's about challenging the status quo, breaking free from the comfort of familiarity, and embracing the discomfort of change.

Unlearning is not a one-time event but an ongoing process— one that demands resilience, humility, and self-awareness. It requires us to confront our own limitations and biases, to question long-held assumptions, and to embrace new perspectives and ways of working. It's about recognizing that the path to success is not always linear, and that failure is an essential part of the learning process.

In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, the ability to unlearn and relearn is more critical than ever. The skills and knowledge that brought us success in the past may not be sufficient to navigate the challenges of tomorrow. By embracing the art of unlearning, we open ourselves up to new possibilities, innovation, and growth.

Business leaders, I urge you to reflect on your own professional journey.

‘Plays were part of the air we breathed’: Amal Allana remembers Ebrahim Alkazi
A

s his daughter, he treated her with the utmost care and was loving and protective. As a student, he was a hard, even harsh, taskmaster and pushed her to give her very best. But when she designed costumes for some of his productions, he treated her

as a professional and gave her complete freedom to express her creative ideas.

Former Chairperson of the National School of Drama (NSD) Amal Allana, who recently wrote 'Ebrahim Alkazi: Holding Time Captive' (Penguin), told IANS that in all these associations, her relationship with the father of modern Indian theatre altered, thus giving her an insight into different aspects of his character, personality, and sense of

aesthetics.

Alkazi was not just the founding director of NSD but also someone who lent new metaphors to Indian theatre and metamorphosed it through his unique vision, as through his production of Girish Karnad's 'Tughlaq' at Delhi's Purana Qila in 1972, which is considered to be one of the finest theatre productions till date, and trained a generation of theatre persons who have been instrumental in breaking new

grounds in every sense of the word.

Allana said that in writing this biography, she has had the opportunity to study her father's life and work in greater detail, albeit more dispassionately.

"Also, yet another aspect of my research included studying his artworks, leading me to curate several projects on him," she said. "Working on these projects has helped me clarify and gain a fuller, overall perspective of

what he aspired for and set out to achieve throughout his life."

One wonders if the daughter was under any 'pressure', considering she was writing about such a towering personality. She confessed that unconsciously she may have felt the pressure, though her father allowed her the greatest freedom to find herself as a theatre artiste.

"Once I left NSD, he never offered any criticism of my work but was supportive of it from a distance.

Sunita Williams, Barry Wilmore to return from space early next year: NASA

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) NASA

astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore, who flew to the International Space Station (ISS) in June this year on board Boeing's faulty Starliner capsule, will return to Earth early next year, the space agency said in a release on Saturday.

NASA will return the Boeing’s Starliner to Earth without the two astronauts aboard the spacecraft, the agency said.

The uncrewed return will allow NASA and Boeing to continue gathering testing data on Starliner during its upcoming flight home, while also not accepting more risk than necessary for its crew.

In a post on X, NASA said: "After extensive review by experts across the agency, NASA's @ BoeingSpace Crew Flight Test

will return with an uncrewed #Starliner. Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are scheduled to return to Earth next spring."

Wilmore and Williams, who flew to the International Space Station in June, have been busy supporting station research, maintenance, and Starliner system testing and data analysis, among other activities, the NASA release said.

“Spaceflight is risky, even at its safest and most routine. A test flight, by nature, is neither safe, nor routine. The decision to keep Butch and Suni aboard the International Space Station and bring Boeing’s Starliner home uncrewed is the result of our commitment to safety: Our core value and our North Star,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, adding: “I’m grateful to both the NASA and Boeing teams for all their incredible and detailed work.”

Wilmore and Williams will continue their work formally as part of the Expedition 71/72 crew through February 2025. They

will fly home aboard a Dragon spacecraft with two other crew members assigned to the agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission. Starliner is expected to depart from the space station and make a safe, controlled autonomous re-entry and landing in early September, NASA said in the release.

NASA and Boeing identified helium leaks and experienced issues with the spacecraft reaction control thrusters on June 6 as Starliner approached the space station.

Since then, engineering teams have completed a significant amount of work, including reviewing a collection of data, conducting flight and ground testing, hosting independent reviews with agency propulsion experts, and developing various return contingency plans.

The uncertainty and lack of expert concurrence does not meet the agency’s safety and performance requirements for human spaceflight, thus prompting NASA leadership to move the astronauts to the Crew-9 mission, the space agency said.

Sunita Williams, Butch Willmore may suffer space anaemia after prolonged stay on ISS

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) Even as NASA is expected to make a final call on Saturday to plan the return of Indian-Origin Sunita Williams and Butch Willmore to Earth from the International Space Station (ISS), health experts pointed the risks to the human body because of prolonged stay in microgravity.

Williams and Willmore became the first to ride Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft on June 5. The eight-day mission to the ISS has now extended to more than two months in space for the duo.

NASA officials have expressed concern that technical glitches on Starliner may pose risks while de-orbiting on Earth.

The space agency is expected to decide on Starliner's safety levels. If it deems Starliner unfit, the astronaut duo will likely return onboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule in February 2025.

However, the extended mission is likely to increase their exposure to microgravity and cause space anaemia, health experts said.

Microgravity can lower the count of haemoglobin and red blood cells (RBCs) -- essential for the transport of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body.

“If astronauts develop anaemia

during their space missions which could be for long durations, there could be a significant impact on their energy, strength, and endurance,”

Dr. Anoop P, Sr. Consultant - Haematology, Paediatric Haemato-Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant, at Aster RV Hospital, Bengaluru, told IANS.

Sequestration and haemolysis

may be considered as the main causes of space anaemia which means the red blood cells are destroyed prematurely, he explained.

The net effect is that more red blood cells are destroyed than produced while in space. This condition can critically affect the health of astronauts not only during extended stays in space but also upon their return to Earth, the expert said.

As per NASA, the human body on Earth creates and destroys about 2 million red blood cells every second.

However, astronauts destroy 54 per cent more RBCs, or 3 million per second, during six-month space missions, revealed a 2022 study published in the journal Nature Medicine.

The study showed that the effects may be felt only after landing on Earth.

“In space, astronauts may exhibit reductions in blood volume and orthostatic tolerance, as well as decreased aerobic capacity and high probability of arrhythmias. While the cardiovascular system seems to be working fine under space and the body does not

Telegram Chief Pavel Durov arrested at French airport

Paris, Aug 25 (IANS) Pavel Durov, billionaire co-founder and chief executive of Telegram, was arrested at the Bourget airport outside Paris on Saturday evening for alleged offences related to the popular messaging app, media reports said, citing police officials

Durov was travelling aboard his private jet, TF1 TV said on its website, adding he had been targeted by an arrest warrant in France.

The 39-year-old is understood to have been travelling from Azerbaijan and was arrested at about 8 p.m. local time.

Durov was expected to appear in court on Sunday.

The Russian-born entrepreneur lives in Dubai, where Telegram is based, and holds dual citizenship of France and the United Arab Emirates.

Durov, who is estimated by Forbes to have a fortune of $15.5bn (£12bn), left Russia in 2014 after he refused to comply with demands to shut down opposition communities on his VK social media platform, which he sold.

require as much of an effort from the heart (still a muscle) in microgravity,” Dr. Irfan Khazi Javeed, Consultant - Internal Medicine, Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, told IANS.

Anoop suggested proper exercise regimens to help maintain the RBC levels, regular monitoring of blood parameters during the mission, and having access to a diet rich in iron and other essential nutrients that help maintain adequate haemoglobin levels and support the production of red blood cells are the possible solutions that could help enhance their health conditions while on their space mission.

“Ongoing studies into the mechanisms of space anaemia are critical, as understanding the underlying causes, such as increased haemolysis and the impact of microgravity on bone marrow function, can lead to the development of targeted therapies and strategies to prevent anaemia during long-duration space missions,” he said.

Williams, selected as an astronaut by NASA in 1998, is a veteran of two space missions -- in 2006 and 2012. Born to Indian-American parents, she currently also holds the record for the longest time spent in space by a woman -- 322 days.

The latest mission is expected to create a new record for her.

Telegram did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Russia's embassy in France is taking "immediate steps" to clarify the situation.

Citing a representative from the Russian embassy in France, TASS reported there had been no appeal from Durov's team to the embassy, but that it was proactively taking "immediate" steps.

Durov and his brother Nikolai founded the messaging app in 2013 and it has about 900 million active users.

Telegram offers end-to-end encrypted messaging and users can also set up "channels" to disseminate information quickly to followers.

France's OFMIN, an agency tasked with preventing violence against minors, had issued an arrest warrant for Durov as the coordinating agency in a preliminary investigation into alleged offences, including fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organised crime and promotion of terrorism, one of the sources close to the case said.

"Enough of Telegram's impunity," said one of the investigators, adding they were surprised Durov came to Paris knowing he was a wanted man.

ChatGPT a hit among students who struggle to pay attention: Study

New Delhi, Aug 28 (IANS)

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like Open AI’s ChatGPT are widespread hits among students who have problems paying attention, according to a study on Wednesday.

Researchers in Sweden looked into how teenagers related to how they used and thought of generative AI chatbots as helpful for their homework. Their findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence.

The scientists from Lund University carried out two investigations. The first included 485 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16; while the second had 359 pupils aged 15 to 19.

According to the surveys, older students used AI chatbots at a rate of roughly 53 per cent while younger kids used them at a rate of about 15 per cent. A plausible rationale could be that advanced

learners receive more intricate projects and, consequently, may employ AI systems more frequently.

“Students with more attention to challenges found these tools particularly useful, especially for completing assignments.

This highlights these tools’ role as potential support for students struggling with cognitive processes crucial for academic success,” said Johan Klarin, a school psychologist and research assistant at the Department of Psychology at the varsity.

More importantly, the results of the experiments demonstrated that students who had greater difficulty with attention issues thought generative AI was far more helpful for their coursework than their classmates. According to the researchers, one explanation could be that these pupils experience higher productivity gains than their peers.

The findings aim to inform educators, policymakers, and technology developers about the role of AI in education and its balance with academic integrity.

Study shows dangers of button battery ingestion in small children

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) Button batteries, used to power several common products at home, can lead to serious injuries and even death among toddlers who ingest them, finds a study.

The team from the University of Sydney analysed over 400 cases of button battery damage worldwide and stressed that a child's age, the size of the button battery, and a delayed diagnosis combine to create a "perfect storm", which can lead to severe harm.

Lead author Christopher Tran. a professor at the University of Sydney in Australia, urged clinicians to be mindful of “a potential button battery ingestion when dealing with acute onset respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms in young children".

Tran added that when a child swallows a button battery, it can cause a chemical reaction in the oesophagus that creates a solution that burns and dissolves the tissue inside the child’s throat.

In the study, children who did not have the button battery removed within six hours were almost eight times more likely to die. Those younger than two years old who had swallowed a button battery with a diameter of at least 2 centimetre were the most at risk for serious damage or death.

About 26 per cent of injuries from swallowing button batteries resulted in burns to the child's oesophagus, with 23 per cent being extremely severe. Burning can cause a hole in a major vein or artery, causing fatal blood loss.

Nearly 9 per cent of complication cases resulted in death, with bleeding being the most common symptom of fatality.

A growing number of everyday

home gadgets, such as watches, hearing aids, remote controls, and toys, rely on button batteries as tiny power sources. Button batteries, however, pose a risk to inquisitive young children who may swallow them unintentionally or put them in their mouths, noses, or ears without being able to express what has happened. The most common initial symptoms of a button battery swallowing in a child are choking, difficulty feeding, and coughing. However, over time these symptoms change (for example, vomiting, drooling) and may be mistaken for other health issues such as gastroenteritis or a respiratory infection. The researchers also emphasised the need to raise awareness among parents about the possible risks associated with button batteries, the necessity of storing batteries safely, and the proper disposal methods.

‘Heal in Rajasthan’ policy to boost medical tourism in desert state

Jaipur, Aug 24 (IANS) Aiming to boost medical tourism in Rajasthan, the state government will launch a 'Heal in Rajasthan' policy soon, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Detailed discussions were held with all stakeholders on Saturday on the draft of the policy prepared by the Medical and Health Department. The policy will be finalised soon based on the suggestions received.

In a meeting chaired by Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department Shubhra Singh, various aspects were discussed in

detail to increase medical tourism in the state

Speaking on the occasion, she said that the state government is ushering in a new era in medicine in Rajasthan. With this thinking, giving top priority to the health sector in this year's budget, 8.26 percent of the total budget has been provided for health. This is the highest budget provision so far.

She said that the infrastructure in the medical field is being developed rapidly in the state. World class institutions are being built here. Allopathy and AYUSH medicine and wellness activities are being encouraged with a holistic approach. Construction of Ayushman Tower in Sawai Mansingh Hospital, establishment of two Medicity and Marwar Medical University, medical

college and nursing college in every district, promotion of telemedicine, many high class medical institutions in the private sector coming to the state are steps which will boost medical tourism in Rajasthan. Also, with the provision of portability in the Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya Yojana soon, patients from other states will be able to come here for treatment.

Singh said that due to continuous improvement in health services and availability of treatment at reasonable rates, the possibilities of medical tourism in the state have developed rapidly. Through policy decisions, the state government wants to expand these possibilities further. Other enterprises including pharma and the hotel business will also get a boost from this.

Poor sleep may lead to weight gain and cholesterol problems: Study

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) People who sleep poorly are likely to experience greater levels of fatty triglycerides -- a type of blood cholesterol -- and abdominal fat that can increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, and other health issues, according to research.

The study, led by Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in the US, finds that maintaining sleep hygiene, such as putting your screen away at night or going to bed when you're exhausted, can make a person healthier. The study builds support for the importance of good sleep habits. Good sleep habits, such as putting your screen away at night or going to bed when you're tired, can help to promote good overall health, said Brooke Shafer, a postdoctoral researcher at the Sleep, Chronobiology and Health Laboratory at the OHSU School of Nursing.

How humidity continues to be underestimated till date

Humidity, often neglected or underestimated, is a very serious problem yet it does not figure in climate change policies by governments, finds a study.

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have effectively integrated humidity data from hundreds of cities into Heat Stress Indicators (HSIs) for the first time, and they have evaluated how well these indicators predict deaths from heat-related causes. Their findings, published in the journal PNAS Nexus, show that global warming was the previous term for climate change, and with good reason: Globally speaking, temperatures are rising. Beyond air temperature, there are other factors to consider, the researchers argued.

Humidity, or the concentration of water in the air, is one such factor that is crucial in some regions of the world.

Humidity has an impact on our body's capacity to release heat

through sweat, which is the result of water evaporating off our skin. This evaporative cooling is less effective and eventually unfeasible in high humidity settings.

Qiang Guo from the varsity’s Department of Global Health Policy said that HSI and its implications may differ based on environments.

Guo and his team used climate data from 739 cities across 43 countries to create eight HSIs. They found that the relationship between daily temperature and humidity is the key factor affecting HSI performance.

Humidity-incorporating HSIs have shown effectiveness in predicting heat-related mortality in regions like coastal areas in the US, Peru, South Korea, and Japan. Wet bulb globe temperature could improve heat-health alert system accuracy.

However, the study primarily focussed on developed locations, leaving out developing nations experiencing extreme heat stress. This points to the prevalent bias, especially when the dichotomy between developing countries and developed nations comes up, even when the developing nations have a lot to contribute

Pesco-vegetarian diet may help reduce mortality in older adults: Study

New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) Plantbased diet has long been touted as healthy, but it may not be enough for the sustenance of older people, claims a study on Friday, noting that including seafood may help.

The study, conducted by Loma Linda University, US, showed that a pesco-vegetarian diet -- which includes fish and other seafood as a primary source of protein, along with vegetarian elements -- may be a more viable option for elderly people.

The findings were published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Thirty persons were recruited for the study, with an equal number of males and women. With a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25, each of them was classified as overweight. Each participant's time difference between the onset of melatonin -- a hormone that the brain produces in response to darkness -- and average sleep timing was measured by the researchers.

Vegetarian diets are linked to a decreased risk of several causespecific deaths as well as overall mortality, particularly in middleaged and male participants. However, very old vegetarians were, in the study, found to have somewhat greater risks for neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease, dementia, and stroke. But, the elderly on a pesco-vegetarian diet showed a small but noticeable advantage over other vegetarian and nonvegetarian diets.

“A vegetarian diet appears to offer protection from risk of death through middle-aged years, but once it helps people get into their 80s that overall advantage seems

to disappear for those adhering to a strict vegetarian diet,” said Gary Fraser, professor at the Loma Linda University School of Public Health.

“These increased risks of neurological conditions among vegetarians in their 80s weren’t huge, but something is going on there that we shouldn’t ignore if we wish the vegetarian advantage to continue for all vegetarians in their later years,” Fraser added.

The study analysed data from a total of 96,000 participants, both American and Canadian natives. It found that vegetarians had a 12 per cent lower risk of death compared to non-vegetarians. Participants with a pescovegetarian diet had an 18 per cent reduction in death, while those with a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet -- a diet that excludes meat, fish, and poultry but uses dairy and eggs -- had a 15 per cent reduction.

Vegans had a 3 per cent decrease in risk, with male vegans showing better results than females, so even by a narrow margin, pescovegetarian diets were deemed the best.

Overall this could very well become a new trend in the global lifestyle chart but this diet still warrants further study, said the team.

the importance of maintaining healthy and beautiful nails, especially during the summer months. Don't let the sun and heat take a toll on your nail health; follow these expertrecommended tips to keep your nails looking fabulous.

Use the Right Tools

Using the right tools is crucial for maintaining nail health. Avoid metal cuticle pushers, as they can cause damage and increase infection risks. Instead, opt for wooden or rubber cuticle pushers. Additionally, always use sharp, clean nail clippers and files to prevent nail splitting and peeling.

Chase the sun, not the damage: Smart skin care choices for summer

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, many of us eagerly embrace the warmth of summer. However, the need for diligent skin care comes with the joys of outdoor activities and beach vacations.

Before diving into skin care tips, it's essential to understand the damaging effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to many skin concerns, including sunburn and premature ageing.

"One of the most effective ways to shield your skin from sun damage is sunscreen. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating to ensure comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, and ears, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially if you're swimming or sweating," says Mansi Sharma, founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess.

Hydration is key. Summer heat can take a toll on your skin, leading to dehydration and a loss of moisture. Mansi recommends

to combat the heat by staying hydrated from the inside out. She says, "Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and plump. Additionally, incorporate hydrating skincare products into your routine, such as lightweight moisturizers and serums formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin."

While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it's not the only line of defence against the sun's rays. "Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, hats, and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Opt for tightly woven fabrics and dark colours for optimal sun protection," adds Mansi. "When possible, seek shade during the sun's peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is at its strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shaded area."

The founder of The Honest Tree by Boddess also suggests that while selecting skincare products for summer, opt for formulations that cater to the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi says, "Look for products enriched with antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which help neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your routine can also help slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion."

Sidharth Malhotra: My style is more about looking effortless than overly styled

time

Asked how he would describe his fashion game, Sidharth told IANS: “I gravitate towards classic silhouettes with a subtle touch of masculine edge. My style is more about looking effortless than overly styled.”

It’s all about perfect fit for Sidharth, who made his debut in 2012 with “Student of the Year” and was later seen in hit films such as “Ek Villain," “Kapoor & Sons,” and "Shershaah,” to name a few.

“Fit is certainly essential for me, and I ensure to invest time in making sure each piece is tailored to perfection,” said Sidharth, who began his career as a fashion model.

The 39-year-old star agrees that his fashion journey has evolved in his 12-year journey in Hindi cinema.

“My fashion journey has evolved a lot, and it has been significantly

shaped by the diverse characters I've portrayed on screen. While these roles have introduced me to a spectrum of styles and eras, my aesthetic leans towards a more understated elegance,” said the actor.

Sidharth, who stepped into the world of cinema first as an assistant director to filmmaker Karan Johar in “My Name Is Khan," shared that he appreciates the allure of glamour for specific characters.

“But my everyday style prioritises comfort and simplicity. Ultimately, my on-screen wardrobe is a collaborative process, intricately tied to the character's narrative and the film's visual world,” he said.

The star, who has redefined the case for men’s style with his impeccable fashion choices, minced no words when it came to men experimenting as much as women with their wardrobes.

Asked if he agrees that when it comes to men's fashion, there's not much to experiment with compared to women, Sidharth said: “I disagree with that perspective.”

The “Yodha” star said that the fashion industry for men has evolved tremendously, offering a wide range of options from fast fashion to high-end luxury.

“Today, men have access to diverse styles and trends that allow for personal expression. It's all about being intentional with our choices and how we style ourselves. We no longer have to conform to traditional notions of menswear,” said the star.

The actor acknowledged the efforts by designers for pushing the envelope when it comes to fashion for men. “Designers are pushing boundaries, creating pieces that cater to various aesthetics and personalities.

Karisma recalls pre-vanity van days when stars changed outfits behind trees

Actress Karisma Kapoor, who is known for films like ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, ‘Coolie No.1’, and ‘Raja Hindustani’, among others, recently walked down the memory lane as she recalled how when she started out actors didn’t have a vanity van.

The actress, who serves as a judge on the dancing reality show ‘India’s Best Dancer Season 4', spoke about the changes that the

film industry has seen in the last 40-50 years.

“The first film in which I got to work on a monitor was ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. It was during the dance of envy shot. Yash ji (Yash Chopra) got it, and Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra were also on the sets... 'Aur hum toh paagal ho gaye the' (we went mad looking at the monitor). We thought, 'Really? We could see what we have done

in a shot'," recalled Karisma, who made her acting debut in 1991 at the age of 16 with 'Prem Qaidi' opposite debutant Harish Kumar. She also spoke about the first sync-sound film that she worked on -- ‘Zubeidaa’.

“I saw another milestone. The first film with sync-sound was ‘Zubeidaa’ directed by Shyam Benegal. It was the first movie where we put on lapel mics for ‘real life sound’," she recalled. The actress was referring to a major technological advancement in Hindi cinema when the industry moved on from studio dubbing of characters to the sync-sound where the dialogues were recorded live on the sets, which made the scene immersive besides adding more depth to the narrative.

She added, “The number of vans that are parked outside the sets of this show... We didn’t have anything like this. We used to go behind a tree and change our outfits for a scene, sometimes we went to the loo... So yeah, our industry has seen major changes in the last 40-50 years."

The actress is seen as a judge alongside Terence Lewis and Geeta Kapoor in ‘India’s Best Dancer 4’.

Kunal

Kemmu enjoys bike ride in Ladakh with his ‘gang’

Actor-filmmaker Kunal

Kemmu, who made his directorial debut with ‘Madgaon Express’, is on a break as he is enjoying a road trip on a bike with his friends in the Himalayas.

Kunal took to his Instagram and shared a video in which he could be seen taking to the roads on a bike with his friends in Ladakh.

The group visited the Khardung La mountain pass in the Leh district.

Captioning the post, Kunal wrote, "Riders Inc.”

Maintained by the Border Roads Organisation, it is one of the world's highest motorable roads.

The video shows Kunal at the Khardungla Pass, at an altitude of 17,982 feet, posing with the Indian flag waving in the wind.

Another photo captures Kunal enjoying a cosy bonfire, all smiles as he bonds with his friends.

He added: “They elevate, they swim past the glories and horrors of life, they bring the solitude to the mind and the body .. they travel rapidly to the end of the World, and back .."

"Music sets your mind to the realm of imagination and dreams of that special moment when fulfillment of those dreams so passionately craved for, come into your own , or rather their own to serve or banish our thoughts ..”

“But your resistance shall ever be that one motivation which shall survive all else and redeem any misgivings .. if ever there were any .. I do not ..”

The actor is currently seen hosting the quiz based reality show, where he had revealed how much he scored in BSc. He said that he only scored 42 percent.

“BSc. kar liya hum bhi bina jaane ki kya hota Bsc. Science main ache number aaye toh hum apply kardiye. (I did BSc. without knowing what it was. I scored well in Science and hence applied for it.)”

“10 saal main humne seekha tha science main scope hai woh 45 minutes main khatam kardiya. (I had always heard that there is scope in science. In just 45 it changed everything)”

Kunal's passion for biking is obvious as he often embarks on thrilling rides with his gang.

These bike trips are not just about the adrenaline rush for him; they are also about savouring the natural beauty that surrounds him and spending quality time with his group of friends.

Kunal, who has often spoken about his passion for travel, is clearly having a great time with his group of friends. Travelling is a tradition for the actor, who has set a personal goal of visiting three international destinations a year - a goal he continues to uphold.

His Ladakh adventure is just another example of how he lives by his passion, inspiring others to pack their bags and explore the world.

On the work front, Kunal Kemmu will next be seen in Prime Video’s upcoming web series ‘Gulkanda Tales’ directed by Raj & DK of ‘The Family Man’ fame, where he will share the screen with Pankaj Tripathi and Patralekha in key roles.

‘Follow Kar Lo Yaar’ aims to explore beyond Uorfi’s digital persona, but fails

Uorfi has become a phenomenon in her own right. From making unapologetic statements to breaking all societal rules - she has emerged as a new digital sensation, and how! One can love or hate her, but one can't ignore her. And now, after creating all the drama around her name, the influencer is up with a reality show, 'Follow Kar Lo Yaar,' to give the audience a peek into her over-to-the-top life.

Following up with the trend of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' and 'Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives,' 'Follow Kar Lo Yaar' allows the audience a voyeuristic view of

Uorfi.

Like the others, the reality show has the same formula - melodrama, family fights, different points of view, and professional tensions. However, unlike others, Uorfi's life has always been on display for the people to watch. So, somewhere down the line, it feels like an extended version of her digital media presence.

In the first episode, the scene cuts to Irrfan's wall-sized painting after a sequence with Uorfi. It is an exciting contrast that it draws between an acting legend and an OTT digital queen. I am not sure if it was intentional by the filmmaker Sandeep Kukreja, but it sure was interesting.

The show starts off great and immediately equips your attention. It introduces us to the quirky fashionista's sisters, family, and team, in a failed attempt to copy Kardashians, maybe. But it soon becomes a snooze fest with repeated sequences of highpitched tussle between Uorfi, her siblings, and managers.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan shared that he had a day of surprises, duty, discipline and music, which he says is the source of the most creative moments in
one's life.
Amitabh took to his blog and wrote: “... A day of surprises and duty and discipline and music. Music is and shall

The film, which belongs to the Maddock Films supernatural universe, is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar. It also starred Sharvari, Abhay Verma and Sathyaraj.

The film was produced by Amar Kaushik and Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, and focuses on the legend of Munjya, inspired by Indian folklore and mythology. As per a folklore in Maharashtra and the Konkan coast, Munjya is believed to be the ghosts of boys who died after this ceremony but before marriage, inhabiting peepal trees.

Raghav Juyal: With ‘Kill’, got a chance to tell the world that I can act too

Actor Raghav Juyal said that with “Kill”, he got a chance to tell the world that he can act too, and that playing a negative role was a big responsibility.

“From auditioning for ‘Kill’ to shooting it with Lakshya, my whole journey for the film has been fun. Like, I always said I have never shied away from working hard. With ‘Kill’, I got a chance to tell the world that I can act too, and playing a negative role is always a big responsibility that requires immense conviction,” Raghav said.

“Lakshya and I did a lot of physical training together for this one, which really improved our

bond off-screen as well. The best thing I find about my character Fani in the film is his twisted humor and sarcasm. Preparing for this role mentally was more crucial than physically, as Fani is a clever lad, and he brings in the thrill in the film,” he added. Talking about the film, which is all set to be streamed on OTT, actor Lakshya said: “ For my character Amrit, I went through a very strict fitness regime. There were times I went beyond my limits to adapt to the role. Nikhil sir has truly been a guiding force throughout the process and I consider him to be my biggest mentor.
