Dussehra festival celebrated in Brisbane

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) celebrated the festival of Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, in Brisbane on October 9. This festival, which comes straight after the celebration of Navratri, is celebrated to remember the victory of justice over immorality, justice over injustice and good over evil.

HSS organised this event in Holland State High School. The event was open for the public to come and see performances and presentations done by eight shakhas from across Brisbane and Gold Coast. These performances and presentations include dand (stick fight), Niyudh (Indian martial arts), yoga, surya namaskar (sun salutation), gosh (instruments), and padavinyas (combat leg movements). HSS swayamsevaks and sevikas presented all these demonstrations to 300+ attendees.

Organisers started the event by doing shastra pooja (worshipping weapons), vyayam yoga and surya namaskar, followed by other performances. After the presentation, our mukhya atithi, Dr Ashutosh Mishra, chief editor, India News, in his address, talked about the importance of sangh, doing volunteer work where needed, including floods, bushfires, and earthquakes. Later he mentioned how sangh inculcates discipline in the present and future generations to achieve the goal of life. After this, our mukhya vakta, Arshdeep Ji, delivered bauddhik on the significance of Vijayadashami. Vijayadashmi, which is a celebration of Shakti, brings strength, and Arshdeep Ji explained five types of strengths:

1. Aatma Bal – inner strength

2. Buddhi Bal – brain/thinking strength

3. Sharirik Bal – Physical strength

4. Shastra Bal – weapon strength5. Sangathan Bal – Unity strength

Following the bauddhik and sangh prarthna, the utsav concluded. A saha bhoj (lunch), which facilitated the community members mingling and knowing each other, was organised for all the families.
