India’s Q1 GDP logs 13.5% growth, experts say lower than expected

Continued from Page 1 the previous fiscal, it came down to 4.1 per cent. The RBI has projected the economy’s growth at 7.2 per cent for the current financial year. “The next few quarters will see slower growth as the base effect wanes. While the ongoing broad-basing of domestic economic activity is supportive, the key risks is slowing global growth, which would curb India’s exports and create uncertainty in private capex plans. These would put downward pressure on our GDP growth forecast of 7.3 per cent for the current fiscal,” said Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist, CRISIL Ltd “First-quarter GDP growth came in lower than expected. High net imports and weaker government consumption expenditure kept overall growth soft,” Joshi added. According to Joshi, private consumption is improving, with urban demand getting support from contact-intensive services. Had it not been for high inflation and subdued rural demand due to negative real rural wage growth, private consumption would have grown faster.

Arora said that the GDP growth is largely a story of service sector rebound which also was visible in the private consumption.

“This is going to take more than legislative change, we need a culture change too,” he said. Albanese said there will still be challenges when the summit ends on Friday afternoon, including a trillion dollars of debt, families struggling with cost-of-living pressures, staff and skills needed for businesses big and small. “But for the first time in a long time, I believe we will be moving to agreement on how to solve these problems, rather than arguing over who is to blame for them,” he said.

Australian PM flags legal reform after secret ministries scandal

Evensequentially.asrecovery in domestic economic activity is yet to be broad-based, global drags in the form of still-elevated prices, shrinking corporate profitability, demand-curbing monetary policies and diminishing global growth prospects weigh on growth outlook, she added.

New Delhi, Aug 31 (IANS) VicePresident Jagdeep Dhankhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday greeted the people on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. “Warm greetings #GaneshChaturthiofto all. Celebrated with much enthusiasm, the festival represents India’s composite culture, transcending the boundaries of caste, creed, religion or region. Today, I pray to #LordGanesh for the good health, happiness and prosperity of all,” the Vice-President tweeted. Prime Minister Modi said: “Best wishes on Ganesh Chaturthi. May the blessings of Bhagwan Shri Ganesh always remain upon us.” Also wishing the people on rhe occasion of Samvatsari, he tweeted: “Michhami Dukkadam! Samvatsari emphasises on forgiveness. May there be no ill-feelings towards anyone. May the spirit of kindness and brotherhood always prevail.”

Canberra, Aug 21 (IANS) Australia's Prime Minister has flagged reforms in response to his predecessor's secret ministries scandal. Anthony Albanese on Sunday revealed he will on Monday receive advice from the Solicitor-General on any legal and constitutional problems surrounding former PM Scott Morrison swearing himself into several ministries, Xinhua news agency reported. It was revealed on Tuesday that Morrison had been appointed to five ministries including the health, home affairs and treasury portfolios secretly between March 2020 and May 2021.

According to Raghvendra Nath, Managing Director, Ladderup Wealth Management, higher interest rates can hit economic activities in the next few quarters which may slowdown the pace of India’s economic growth. “We can expect another rate hike of 25 to 50 basis points in the coming months. Thus, despite India remaining the world’s fastest growing economy, all eyes are place on global recession fears and rising borrowing costs,” Nath added.

Australian PM promises cultural change for female workers

Albanese on Sunday said that "very clearly" there's a need for proper scrutiny of what occurred here. "There are separate questions about the functioning of our democracy, about conventions and whether any conventions have been overturned, and whether there's a need for any reforms required to ensure that something like this can never happen again," he told Sky News Morrison,Australia.whohasbeen urged by some members of the Opposition Liberal Party to resign from Parliament over the scandal, justified the appointments by saying it was necessary to guide Australia's response to the coronavirus pandemic. Albanese said on Sunday his government would establish a royal commission into Australia's coronavirus response as soon as was practical.

"Clearly, you'd need to look at the response of all governments," he said. "Primarily, it would be about the federal government, that's what we have responsibility for. But the interaction between the different levels of government of course was critical to the response to the COVID-19 pandemic." Also on Sunday, Australia reported more than 10,000 new COVID-19 cases and more than 30 deaths as the country continues to battle against the wave of Omicron sub-variant infections in winter.

CAIT' National President B.C. Bhartia and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said that according to an estimate, more than 20 crore Ganesh idols are purchased in the country every year, which generates an estimated business of more than Rs 300 crore. They said that since the last two years, the trend of installing eco-friendly idols of Lord Ganesh in large quantities across the country is growing very fast. Earlier, large quantities of Ganesha idols made of plaster of paris, stone, marble and other items were imported from China due to cheap prices but due to the campaign of boycott of Chinese goods by CAIT in the last two years, the import of Chinese Ganesh idols stands nil and the local craftsmen, artisans and potters working in their houses across cities all over the country involving their family women make idols from clay and cow dung, which are easily immersed. Because of these idols, lakhs of people get business across the country.

Reacting to the GDP numbers, Nikhil Gupta, Chief Economist, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd said it was lower than the market consensus. Assuming no change in 2Q4Q projections, the GDP data suggests that the RBI’s FY23 growth forecast will be revised down to 6.7 per cent from 7.2 per cent earlier, Gupta said. “Overall, it confirms that growth recovery is not so strong in India. It ideally implies that monetary tightening should be not very aggressive. However, it appears that the terminal repo rate will be 5.75-6 per cent in this cycle with 1-2 more rate hikes, ending the cycle in Dec’22,” Gupta added.

There was a turnout of 82.6 per cent of the over 170,000 registered party voters, he added. In her brief address on the occasion, Truss thanked the party for “organising one of the longest job interviews in history”, as well as her supporters. She praised her rivals, particularly Sunak, saying that the campaign was “hard-fought” and showed “the depth and breadth of talent” in the party. Truss pledged to follow through on her promises to voters, saying the Tory party needs to show it can deliver over the next two years, and that she has a “bold plan” to cut taxes and grow the UK economy.

“However, manufacturing has remained a disappointing print, while utilities have remained resilient since the pandemic normalised,” she added. Going ahead, Arora said there may be secular downturn in the growth print as the base effect fades and the economy also slows

Madhavi Arora, Lead Economist, Emkay Global Financial Services, said that the strong YoY growth partly also is led by favourable base effect, as 1QFY22 growth was severely impacted by the Covid Delta wave.

Ahead of the government’s twoday jobs summit, which starts on Thursday, Albanese said “after 30 years in which the gender gap has hardly budged”, he was hoping for serious improvement in economic equality for women.

Springfield renews commitment to development on 30th birthday

Mr Sinnathamby and Mr Sharpless said Springfield City would not divert from its focus on its Knowledge Precinct, which has underpinned the city’s growth. “When we started planning for Springfield City, we had to look overseas because Australia had not had a master-planned city since Canberra’s construction began in 1913,” Mr Sinnathamby and Mr Sharpless said. ““We looked at 15 master-planned communities across the world (13 in the United States and two in the United Kingdom) But we soon came to understand that, in the other nations we scoured, there was nothing like our plans for Springfield, on so much land so close to an established CBD. “We decided that enhancing human and social capital had to be our goal. To do that, we have a city focused on education, health and innovation. These form our Knowledge Precinct.” Springfield City now has 12 schools with plans for 23. There are 19 kindergartens, a university campus and a TAFE college all within eight minutes’ drive of each other. “We have a hospital that is on track to become the largest in the country with complementary health services growing around it,” Mr Sinnathamby and Mr Sharpless said. “And we maintain a strong research approach to commercialise innovation in partnership with government and business, focusing on the physical-digital fusion between old and new.

“We want to build brainpower because education is the only currency that you can cash in anywhere in the world. And it’s the only currency that can’t be stolen from the owner.

“An army of people has made this all possible fuelled by the elements vital for any modern nation to reach its potential –belief and the determination to stop not until the goal is reached.” And that army was out in force at Event Cinema’s this week with Springfield City Group hosting 350 guests at and Event Cinema’s showcase last night.

The night was celebrating with the launch Springfield’s first film 30 Eyes over 30 Years which reflects the journey of Springfield through the eyes of our community.

Springfield City has renewed its commitment to education, health and innovation as it celebrates its 30th birthday with population growth that will place it alongside the likes of Darwin in the coming Lastyears.month marked 30 years since Springfield City Group took ownership of almost 3000 hectares of land on the doorstep of Brisbane. Springfield City Group Chairman Maha Sinnathamby and Deputy Chairman Bob Sharpless – who orchestrated the purchase of the land in 1992 – today celebrated the 30th milestone. “We’re celebrating 30 years but our commitment to this project has always been well into the future – there is a long way to go,” Mr Sinnathamby and Mr Sharpless said. “For now, we are grateful for those 53,000 people who have shared our vision and made Springfield their home. And we thank those who have partnered with us in the homes, businesses, shopping centres, roads, rail, schools, university, stadium and hospital that now surround us. “We will continue to grow as we head towards a population of 145,000 – almost level with Darwin’s current population.” Springfield City is a nationbuilding project of national significance – supported by seven prime ministers and six premiers during its lifespan – with more than $20 billion combined investment, growing at about $1 billion each year.

Canberra, Aug 22 (IANS) The Australian Border Force (ABF) said on Monday that the police have seized the largest ever shipment of fentanyl, preventing more than 5 million doses of the deadly opioid hitting the streets. The drugs were found hidden inside in an industrial wooden lathe sent from Canada that arrived in Melbourne in December 2021, dpa news agency quoted the ABF as saying in a statement. ABF officers inspected the container in February and detected nearly 60 kg of powdered substances hidden inside military-style ammunition boxes concealed within a three tonne lathe. Forensic officers identified 11.2 kg of pure fentanyl, equivalent to about 5.5 million potential lethal doses of 30 mg, and some 30 kg of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of A$27 million ($18 million). As little as 28 milligrams of the drug can be fatal, the ABF said. Australian authorities said they had only ever detected illicit fentanyl importations in minor amounts, all less than 30 grams. “This was a massive amount of Fentanyl,” ABF Commander Maritime and Enforcement South James Watson said. “Fentanyl is an extremely toxic substance to handle as well as being a lethal drug to use. There is a fentanyl epidemic in many parts of the world today, resulting in thousands of deaths of users every year,” Watson added.

Its delegation to the UN human rights council in Geneva rejected the findings of the report, which it said “smeared and slandered China” and interfered in the country’s internal affairs. “This so-called ‘assessment’ is a politicized document that ignores the facts, and fully exposes the intention of the US, Western countries and anti-China forces to use human rights as a political tool,” the delegation said in a lengthy statement. India – a country with over a billion population – with almost 60 per cent of them being regular internet users – is producing some of the world’s largest datasets in various sectors. According to a joint report by MMA India and GroupM India, the number of Indian internet users will expand from the current 622 million to 900 million by 2025. Same report suggests that India is likely to have 500 million online shoppers by 2030 (from 210 million in 2021) – generating huge data on consumers behaviour. Almost 600 million active social media users generate massive engagement and behavioural data. We are getting records of nearabout 38 billion UPI transactions per year – again generating enormous data which can be processed to understand say spending patterns. Be it any field, India is generating gigantic levels of data but now our focus should turn to our data processing capacity. Failing to harvest this power source will be a big miss for everyone. Data processing in India is one of the fastest growing segments and the sheer volume of data processing projects being outsourced to the country is astounding. India’s data analytics industry is projected to be valued at $ 118.7 billion by 2026 (IBEF). That still will not be the peak of what we can achieve. Here comes the opportunity for businesses to invest and bridge the gap. They will have to enable themselves to capitalize on data insights and analytics to make the best use of vast amount of data being generated. It will play a crucial role in turning of industry 4.0 generating employment for people and profits for businesses. Proper investments in scaling AI and machine learning systems will help in increasing data analytics capacity manifold. While working on increasing our technical capacity, we will also have to bring in programs for proper manpower upskilling with advanced technical skills. On the same note, proper awareness and transparency in data processing will be a must to keep data harnessing in ethical direction.

The current market structure needs to be changed in order for the general expansion of the digital commerce sector to occur with widespread participation from customers and sellers. At this point, we simply cannot transform it into a store of value if we want to rethink the mechanism to bring the players together with a focus on trust. Though the idea of a "platform of platforms" may seem quite logical, it may not solve the storage, universality, or trust issues. A paradigm shift from an operator-driven, monolithic platform-centric approach to a facilitator-driven, interoperable, decentralised network is required to solve a challenge of this Inmagnitude.thiscontext, the Indian government initiative, Open Network For Digital Commerce (ONDC) is a project that nonprofit think tanks developed. By Shreyansh Kalhans, Invest India Data is the crude petroleum with huge monetary value but of insignificant utility in its raw form. But petroleum, when passed through a refinery, gives the gasoline which runs the world. Same way, data when analysed and refined into usable formats can do wonders. Companies like Google, Amazon etc. have made it large mainly by harnessing the potential of raw data and power of Analytics. Stepping up into cognitive analytics based on intelligent technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning algorithms and deep learning models, the future of data analytics is already here.

With great potential that data brings to the table, we should also be warned about consequences of it being misused. Data, if in wrong hands, can also be used to manipulate user behaviour, false advertising etc. At its worst, manipulated data can even lead to misleading public policies drafted by legislators based on recorded research and surveys. Government too, is currently working on improving the Data Protection Bill 2019. It is supposed to be a “comprehensive legal framework” to regulate the internet ecosystem, data processing systems, cybersecurity and harnessing non-personal data to unfold the hidden potential of huge data being generated. We will need to bring in vast awareness and education campaign to make users aware of their rights and duties in the online environment and enable them to control how much of the data generated by them is to be shared with various entities.

The global expansion of digital commerce has been spurred by COVID-19. Digital commerce's percentage of total retail sales increased from 16 per cent in 2019 to 19 per cent in 2020, despite a fall in the mobility and travel services industry. This was due to an increase in business-toconsumer (B2C) sales, which was noticeable in online sales of food, household goods, and medical supplies. Additionally, COVID-19 led to a rise in business-tobusiness (B2B) digital trade.

The DFAT report estimates that the diaspora’s role in senior academic positions roles at lecturer level and above has increased from 1.75 per cent in 2016 to 1.92 per cent in 2020. Of the 721,000 Indians (2016 census) approximately 88% are of the working age and 61% are in full-time and 27% in a parttime employment making them the second highest tax-paying migrant community after the UK-born migrants, contributing over $12 billion to the Australian Aseconomy.of2021, numbering over 780,000 Indian migrants have overtaken Chinese and New Zealand born immigrants. Their numbers doubled between 19962006, and quadrupled between 2006-2020, and were Australia’s fastest growing large diaspora community in 2020. As per the ABS projections the Indian-born diaspora will reach 1.07 million by 2035 and 1.4 million by 2045.

Australia’s Department of Home Affairs has even established a Global Talent Officer for South Asia eying India as a source of global talent and business and expediting their migration.

The Rise of the Indian Diaspora in Downunder

According to 2016 ABS census Hindi (159,653 speakers) is the largest spoken language in the Indian households, followed by Punjabi (92,591 speakers), Malayalam (displacing Gujarati as the third most spoken Indian language), Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Marathi, Kannada and Bengali. Of these Hindi speaking Indians, 135,443 are Fijian-Indians. As India rises as a Vishwa Guru, Indians assume their long due place in the Australian society.

By Mohan Kumar

While a rough translation of the word is no doubt 'self-reliant', it is nevertheless not the kind of self-reliance that India arguably believed and practiced in the early years of its Independence up until the seventies and eighties.

It is easy to state what it is not. It is certainly not authoritarian; it is certainly not inward-looking; and it is most certainly not stopping imports and making every product at home. It may be more prudent to think of 'Aatmanirbharta' as Self-Reliance In2.0.this framework of SelfReliance 2.0, the PM clarified that rather than being self-centred, India will open up even more to the world outside, guided by its motto: 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', or our Earth is just one family.

The above is not to suggest that everything is rosy. India faces monumental challenges with regard to eradication of poverty, job creation and investment in health/education/skills of its vast population. But the lessons are clear: India is sui generis and it is only an "Indian" model that will work for India and Indians.

A data-rich report prepared by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade entitled — “Australia’s Indian Diaspora: A National Asset: Mapping the Community’s Reach into the Australia-India Economic Relationship”— quite timely encapsulates the rise of the diaspora, especially when bilateral relations have hit a historic high. Australia’s rapidly transforming demography wherein one in four Australian has been born overseas, Indian diaspora is now turning heads. Calling the diaspora ‘aspirational’, the report shows that a comparatively younger diaspora is vital for meeting Australia’s skills shortage, technological development and exports.

Hence, the capital importance of Aatmanirbharta. After all, as we have seen above, 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' is not just good for India, but also for the world at large. (Dr Mohan Kumar is a former Indian Ambassador who is a fulltime academic now. The views expressed are personal)

It was in May 2020 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the clarion call for a Bharat that was 'Aatmanirbhar'. It is important to clarify what this meant and what it did not.

Citing the 2016 ABS Census the report observes, “The median age of Indian-born residents in Australia in 2016 was just 33 years, compared to 44 years for overseas-born migrants generally, with 87 per cent under the age of 50. Compared to the general population, there is a larger share among Indian-born people aged 25 to 39 as well as a larger percentage of children under the age of nine”. Largely concentrated (70%) in the states of Victoria and New South Wales, the diaspora has moved interstate into Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. In any developing suburb, an Indian family is a common sight. The DFAT report indicates that the cumulative effect of a generally highly educated youthful, linguistically diverse and growing community, plugged into networks of innovation, and well represented in business, across services and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) sectors with a strong export potential. It is a key contributor to not only bilateral trade and investment but Australia’s international competitiveness.

To understand the significance of UPI, consider this: India accounted for the largest number of worldwide digital transactions in 2021 at a whopping 48 billion, a number that is nearly three times bigger than China's 18 billion, and is at least six times bigger than the transactions of the US, Canada, the UK, France and Germany combined. Voices in the US are saying that we must learn from India which is leapfrogging into the future. Again, Aatmanirbharta at work.

Modi went on to say that Aatmanirbharta will stand on five pillars: Economy, infrastructure, technology, demography and demand. The PM explained the raison d'etre of Aatmanirbharta by saying that this should prepare India for participation in global supply chains and that this is a battle India cannot afford to lose. There is little doubt that the global Covid-19 pandemic played a significant role in India's push for Self-Reliance 2.0. Take the simple example of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and N-95 masks. At the beginning of the pandemic, India was not making any N-95 masks. Today, India manufactures at least 200,000 N-95 masks a day, if not more. Even more impressive is India's own record of vaccinating its mammoth population. When Covid emerged in 2020, almost no one believed India could ever fully vaccinate its population and that such an exercise would take years. Yet, in July 2022, about 18 months after the first vaccination, India completed two billion doses of vaccines for its citizens.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2021 census 783,958 persons declared their ancestry as Indian constituting 3.1% of the Australian population. They constitute the second largest taxpayers and easily outnumber their Australian counterparts in stadiums during the Border-Gavaskar series.

The story of how this was achieved is worthy of a case study, which will cover vital issues such as public-private partnership, Centre-state cooperation and not to forget, building awareness among citizens and getting their participation willingly in this Indeed, exercise.the WHO and others have praised India and the best practices here will be emulated the world over. Proving that Self-Reliance 2.0 is not just for Indians, the country also exported a large number of vaccines and PPE kits to countries all over the Theworld.latest statistics from the MEA website talks of 240 million (approx) vaccines which have been delivered to 101 countries, including developed, developing and least-developed nations. The story of India being the pharmacy of the world is too well known to bear any repetition here. All of this is real Aatmanirbharta at Thework.Co-WIN platform that India used for administering vaccines to its mammoth population was remarkable. Co-WIN is essentially a cloud-based IT solution for planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating Covid vaccination in India. By July 2021, India decided to make this open platform available to all countries for their use. In the Co-WIN global conclave organised in July 2021, as many as 142 countries expressed interest in adopting it. Again, this is Aatmanirbharta at work.

The war in Ukraine has had a profound impact not just in Europe, but more importantly for developing and least-developed countries. Specifically, the war has impacted food, energy and commodity prices adversely. Wheat shortage in particular is expected to affect Africa and the Middle-East quite significantly. At a time like this, it is comforting to know that India's position when it comes to food security for its huge population is satisfactory. This is yet another manifestation of Self-Reliance 2.0. Indeed, not only was India able to give away food-grains and lentils to 800 million of its citizens as part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, but also able to carry out modest exports of food-grains to low income countries that needed it. Again, Aatmanirbharta at work. Yet another amazing success story of Aatmanirbharta is the case of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) which is a government-backed centralised digital payment gateway that is widely popular in India.

According to the 2021 Orbisdatabaseof companyinformation collated by Bureau van Dijk,a Moody’s Analytics Company — people of Indian heritage are employed in at least 996 Australian organizations of which an estimated 2,840 (13%) as directors and managers (12.5% women), constituting 3% of the Australian population. The report says that 964 of these 2,840 could potentially drive bilateral business and trade engagements in health, tourism, ICT and resources, across companies with a gross $250 billion annual turnover. Surprisingly, in the flagship sector of education, and in agribusiness their role remains below par. But that may change rapidly as international education and student migration drive bilateral relationship. Indians were the largest source of skilled migrants in 2019-20 and second largest source of international students in 2019-20 to Australia.

On what basis? Well, the actors starring in the film and the maker behind it.

The film industry’s captains of doom

www.indianews.com.au facebook.com/indianewsaustralia 19 INDIA NEWS SPECIAL FEATURESSept 1-15, 2022 - Vol 3, Issue 4

The film industry in Mumbai is in doldrums and guess who all have delivered it to its near doom? The industry's own people. The very people who are here to do business, make a living out of it. To live and let live has always been the adage followed in the trade, like in all other trades. Folks in the industry were always more considerate to those who incurred losses in some venture and did not disown them.

If recently, two major star films, 'Laal Singh Chaddha' and 'Raksha Bandhan', have flopped or rather emerged as unmitigated disasters at the box office, it is not because of any boycott or social media, or that they were bad. Even if a film is bad, one with such stars as Aamir and Akshay should at least open well! Both were met with a very, very poor response.

A lot of these companies, even while exiting, had spoiled the stars so much that with every successful film, they went on adding a few more crores in multiples of ten to their price tag till their films became unviable.

The problem with these corporate houses is that they know nothing about filmmaking and their involvement was limited to mainly financing films, the ones which had big stars. They cared for delivery and that could be done only by the ones who were close to the stars. So, a star's secretary would be sanctioned, say, Rs 100 crore to go and make three movies! It was just about who could rope in a certain star so that a film would attract crowds from the day it opened. They did not consider content. They backed projects, not content. There were many films supported by such corporate houses and, soon, their projects started showing up on their Somewherebottom-line.along the line, the intentions started showing. They were here to exploit. The greedy side surfaced. They started eating into the roots of the tree that bore fruits. Killing the golden goose, as the saying goes. You don't make money if you do not let others earn, too.

If 'Laal Singh Chaddha' was the Indian version of 'Forrest Gump', unnecessarily stretched, Akshay Kumar's 'Raksha Bandhan' borrowed the plot from producer Shabnam Kapoor's 1991 Mithun Chakraborty film, 'Pyar Ka Devta', where the hero promises his dying mother that he won't enter into wedlock till he sees his three sisters married off.

ADVERTISE WITH US Call us at 1300 859 066

Don't take your audience for granted, don't blame OTT. Blame yourself. If the fate of 'Laal Singh Chaddha' and 'Raksha Bandhan' don't open your eyes and minds, it is really a point of no return.

Things started changing as the prospect hunters entered the arena so as to give the industry a corporate work culture. What did they know about filmmaking? Nothing, nothing at all. They installed management graduates on top. Did they know filmmaking? They did not. Marketing consumer products is not the same as marketing films and creativity is not a part of any education. Amitabh Bachchan was the first to learn this the hard way. He launched the Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), later renamed AB Corp, to professionally produce films, promote new talent as well as to organise other events related to entertainment. He did not have any experienced film industry person at the helm. The move led Bachchan almost to bankruptcy. Some more big-time corporate houses followed. The houses of Tata, Birla, Singhania and Biyani left as soon as they entered after their initial Theexperience.oneswho came in later included some foreign-funded companies, too. We had Sony, Fox Star, Columbia, Viacom, Warner, Walt Disney UTV and Reliance Big, for instance. Some have folded up; a couple of others deal with a select few filmmakers.

Everything in the film industry was hunky-dory. People made films. They staked everything they had. Hit or flop, they survived to make another film and the industry people stood by them. The financers, the toughest guys to deal with, also extended their support, for without them, a producer could never make another film. If a producer lost money in one film, the star concerned considered him in his next film and his regular distributor did not forsake him. If an exhibitor incurred loss on one film, the distributor made concessions in the next film. So far all was well and the film industry was thriving on its own. No support from any outside agencies, including the central and state governments, no industry status and no institutional finance. Yet, they were the first ones on call when the nation needed them.

Now, his fourth release, 'Raksha Bandhan', will help him with the dubious achievement of finally crossing the Rs 100-crore mark. Is that good news for those who back such actors blindly? Okay, they don't have a department to check content and vet it, but don't they have a costs and accounts department? (While on the subject of Akshay Kumar, a producer signed him for three films with a one-time lump sum payment. Following the latest disaster, the producer hurriedly offloaded one of the three films to an OTT platform this week!)

Not because the masses did not crave for cinema, but because they were kept out of this one form of entertainment that used to be available and affordable to them. The reason was unreasonable pricing. What happened to single-screen cinemas? Thanks to the shortsighted policies of various state governments, they stood no chance in hell to survive. Maybe the policymakers thought that multiplexes were going to be some kind of mint for the state governments! They were granted all sorts of concessions on land acquisition and entertainment tax exemptions, though the single screens never got any. What was the logic and where was the economic sense here? Besides, the multiplex being a novelty and a place to boast about, the audience preference moved to the new way of watching films. Sadly, it was a case of never returning for some and no cinema to watch a movie at for most. The single screens had no alternative but to close down. Some single-screen properties were gobbled up by the multiplex chains, while most others lie in ruins now, in such a state that nobody can imagine these were once throbbing hubs frequented by thousands each day.

Next, we got the multiplex culture. They took the cinemagoing experience from a mass medium of entertainment to the elite level. Their admission rates were restrictive and exorbitant, which kept the very audience that contributed towards the kind of success films enjoyed over the years. The days of silver and golden jubilees were gone.

Is selling a small carton of popcorn at Rs 450 a stroke of marketing genius? (Corn, by the way, is regarded as the poor man's food.) You expect only the affluent to come to your property to watch cinema, but that does not deter you from levying parking charges.

Marketing is a word bandied about in the film industry ever since the so-called corporate culture tried to force its way in. What exactly does it mean? What does a marketing guy do? Is he the one to decide how many screens to be granted to what film? Films have been released in cinemas from the day they were made. So, what is new? The new thing is that these marketing guys, even while knowing nothing about the film in question, decide on whether it should get 3,000 or 4000 screens, or far fewer than that number.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, cinematographer Hemant Chaturvedi travelled across areas in the Hindi belt and recorded in pictures the state of these single screens. The book with tell-tale pictures should be out soon.

Take for example the instance of Akshay Kumar. His last three films together could not cross the Rs 100-crore mark.

Phrases such as 'mass film', 'mass appeal', 'film for the masses', 'loved by the masses' were forgotten because the masses could not afford to watch films anymore.

'The Kashmir Files' started off with just about 500-odd screens. It went on adding screens with success to reach 3,500 within the first nine days. Guess who is the greediest of them all? The actors. For a lot of undeserved money, they sell themselves. Which stars and even wannabe stars seriously think they are worth what they are demanding? A new actor who comes up with one decent boxoffice performer, starts talking in multiples of crores. Corporate finances worked well if a film was successful, so some actors decided to turn to film production. Why let someone else make money if my films are working? All stars, none excluded, took to film production. Make a film for brother, sister, brotherin-law, but why let an outsider earn. So what if he made films with you when you were not such a Then, hit? of course, there are brand endorsements. I don't know how the brands profit by paying crores to stars for promoting their underwear, cooking oil and colas, but I have seen a star endorsing a product in a very competitive market even though tickets for his films don't sell for Rs 100! Unlike in cricket, a film star never knows when to call it quits.

With just 14 seconds remaining in the game, he captured Avdhut Patil with a superb sky dive that not only added three winning points for Odisha Juggernauts but also helped them win the title. Lande scored nine points in attack for the winning side while Rohan Shingade secured 11 points for Telugu Yoddhas. IANS has a look at the reasons which played a part in India losing their first match of Asia Cup 2022: India’s- middle overs wobble with bat A whirlwind 54-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, with Virat Kohli looking good, it was the perfect platform for India to double the score on a pitch and inch to getting 200, especially in Dubai which has got an overwhelming reputation to make life easier for chasing sides. But Kohli found little support from other end to accelerate in last five overs as India lost three big wickets in middle overs. Suryakumar Yadav (13) slog-swept straight to backward square leg off left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz. Rishabh Pant (14) reverseswept straight to backward point off leg-spinner Shadab Khan. Hardik Pandya punched a crossseam ball from Mohammad Hasnain straight to a forward diving short mid-wicket to depart for a two-ball duck. Though Kohli and Deepak Hooda (16 off 14 balls) got some big hits in the end, it was too little, too late for India with the middle order not coming to the party as Pakistan conceded just 88 runs in the last ten overs.

Australia’s ODI series vs Kiwis to kick-start minor tweaks in side for 2023 World Cup: McDonald Townsville (Queensland), Sep 4 (IANS) Australia men’s cricket team coach Andrew McDonald has indicated the three-match One-day International series against New Zealand at Cairns, beginning September 6, will be the beginning of the process of Leg-spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi had taken out Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam cheaply. But Nawaz, sent to bat at number four to counter them, hit six fours and two sixes in a quick 20-ball 42 to give Pakistan’s chase much-needed impetus. He began by cutting Chahal past short third man for four. He then clobbered Pandya over longon for a much-needed six and slog-swept Bishnoi for six over mid-wicket. Nawaz was brutal against pacers too, hammering Arshdeep Singh down the ground and slammed fours off Pandya through cover and over the keeper’s head. He capitalised on Chahal’s loose deliveries by placing fours through leg-side. But it was his game against spin which got the tide in favour of Pakistan, smacking 22 runs off nine balls at a whopping strike-rate of 244.44. Though Mohammad Rizwan’s anchor role and a knock of 71 was crucial in Pakistan’s win, Nawaz was the driving force of the fivewicket victory with his all-round show. Unsurprisingly, he was adjudged Player of the Match. Pakistan’s spinners outdo India’s leg-spin duo As Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave India a blazing start with 54 run-opening stand in five overs, Pakistan needed their spinners, Nawaz and Shadab, to stem the run flow. They exactly did that. Nawaz conceded just 25 in four overs, including the fifth over in the powerplay and took out a dangerous Suryakumar Yadav too. Shadab varied his line and length well to not conceded sixes in his spell of 2/31, including a superb five-run 16th over. He also took out Rishabh Pant and Deepak Hooda in his four overs to delay the Indian acceleration. In the innings, Pakistan’s pacers conceded 121 runs and picked three wickets, at an RPO of 10.88. In contrast, their spinners bowled eight overs between themselves for just 56 runs and picked three wickets, at an RPO of just seven. India’s spinners, Ravi Bishnoi and Yuzvendra Chahal, conceded 69 runs overall in eight overs, picking just two wickets at an RPO of 8.62, with Hooda’s parttime off-spin not considered at all. Their pace counterparts gave away 111 runs, picking three wickets at an RPO of 9.65.

Chennai, Aug 31 (IANS) Government policy support coupled with competitivenessimprovingofrenewable energy will fuel Emerging Asia’s (EM Asia) long-term transition to a lower carbon energy mix, albeit at different speeds, said Moody’s Investors Service in a new report. However, key challenges remain for certain countries, including inconsistent policy implementation and high leverage to fund renewables’ capacity “Governmentexpansion. policies, such as priority in dispatch and mandatory renewable energy consumption targets, will further support the sector’s development in EM Asia. Still, the move away from coal will depend on how governments balance nearterm objectives such as energy affordability and security against long-term emission reduction goals,” Boris Kan, a Moody’s Vice President and Senior Credit Officer said. EM Asian countries’ plans to reach net-zero emissions depend on shifting the fuel mix from mainly thermal power toward clean and renewable Theenergy.International Energy Agency’s stated policy scenario predicts total installed nonhydropower renewable capacity in China, India and Southeast Asia will increase from about 700 gigawatts (GW) in 2020 to about 5,300GW in 2050. In EM Asian countries such as India and China, wind and solar power are the most competitive energy sources, mainly driven by a drop in wind turbine and solar module prices over the past 3-5 years despite recent price volatility. But difficulties remain for renewable energy companies, including (1) their noncompliance with renewable purchase obligations, (2) delays to renewable tariff payments by off-takers, (3) uncertainty of the renewable tariff regime, (4) higher leverage amid significant renewable expansion, although major companies will have access to lower-cost financing, and (5) electricity transmission constraints, Moody’s said.

Cyber-security researchers on Tuesday said they discovered a recent cyber espionage campaign targeting energy and manufacturing firms globally, including in the South China Sea, that was perpetrated by Chinese hackers. BHU claims breakthrough in gallbladder cancer treatment

The research team identified 27 somatic mutations that involved 14 critical genes. Of these, two genes namely p53 and KRAS were the most mutated and appeared to be driver mutations behind these cancers. He said that the bioinformatics analysis identified MAP kinase, PI3K-AKT, EGF/ EGFR and Focal Adhesion PI3KAKT-mTOR signalling pathways and cross-talk between these pathways. The study suggested that the complex crosstalk between the mTOR, MAPK and multiple interacting cells signalling cascades promotes gallbladder cancer progression, and hence, motor targeted treatment is an attractive option in the cure of gallbladder cancer. These targeting molecules are available and approved for different indications, however, they have never been used in gallbladder cancer.

Meanwhile, the Covid positivity rate of the city has come down to 2.85 per cent. The number of active cases stands at 2,226 out of which 1,627 patients are being treated in home isolation. With 410 patients recovering in the last 24 hours, the total number of recoveries has gone to 19,70,547, while Delhi's total caseload is 19,99,240 and the death toll in the city has risen to 26,467. The number of Covid containment zones stands at 195.

"Governments also need to better incorporate hybrid working arrangements, provide equal access to parental leave entitlements and overhaul wage-setting mechanisms," said contributing author Miriam Yates.

Many hospitals have also been running at an unprecedented capacity level to clear the elective surgery backlog due to Covid-19 restrictions since the pandemic began. On Monday, Victoria reported 2,147 cases and four deaths from the virus. There were 343 hospitalizations and 22 in intensive care units.

The findings of the study have been published in the prestigious scientific journal Molecular biology reports. According to Pandey, the driver mutations for gall bladder cancers have been identified for the first time. However, it is still unclear why the mutations occur mainly in these two genes in this geographical area. Heavy metal toxicity and typhoid carrier state have earlier been implicated in gallbladder carcinogenesis. He said this pathway and the cross talk have been identified for the first time in the world, and this opens the gate for use of new therapeutic drugs like evrolimus and temsirolimus in gallbladder cancer. Both of these drugs are mTOR inhibitors and interfere with the synthesis of proteins that regulate proliferation, growth and survival of tumour cells. They also reduce tumour growth by reducing angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation in tumour) by inhibiting VEGF (gene) and hence cut its food supply, thereby killing the cells. Pandey added that the research team has submitted a proposal for a clinical trial of mTOR inhibitors in gallbladder cancer, which if successful, will open a new doorway for treatment of gallbladder cancer which is considered incurable till now.

The researchers said that the findings give new evidence that the outcomes of the pandemic have not been split equally along the lines of gender. They made a series of recommendations to address the unequal impacts, including investment into early education and childcare, greater investment into social and mental health support, and addressing the role of gender stereotypes.

Under the new programme, which will run until the end of October, those eligible mainly include such groups as pensioners, veterans and people with low income, reports Xinhua news agency.

A factsheet from the country's Department of Health showed that from January to July of this year, the Australian government launched a temporary RAT concessional access scheme, allowing concession card holders 20 free tests over the six-month period. By Monday morning, Australia has recorded 9,976,582 confirmed cases and 13,648 deaths, as the seven-day moving average of daily increase nears 12,000 cases per day.

A research team led by Manoj Pandey from the Department of Surgical Oncology at the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), has identified the somatic mutations responsible for developing gallbladder cancer. Gallbladder cancer is one of the most common kind of cancers reported in the Gangetic belt. The cancer is often diagnosed late and has a poor survival rate. The current five-year survival rate is 10-20 per cent. According to Pandey, the researchers at BHU have been working on gallbladder cancer for the past 25 years to find out the probable causes which continue to remain elusive.

It will help them continue working while having their specialist studies in midwifery.

"Every health system in the country is under enormous pressure due to the pandemic.

As a part of the research, the team carried out next generation sequencing of tumour DNA from gallbladder cancer in 33 patients. This was further subjected to bioinformatics analysis.

Wabi-Sabi: The Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, should be followed while styling what you wear. This is based on the acceptance of transience and imperfect. Streetwear could never be in perfect symmetry, which we should embrace. This is a comparatively very new trend in India but a highly popular one among the youth. It is all about roughness, simplicity, modesty, and appreciating the ingenious integrity of neutrality.

“Few brands have actually embraced the opportunity for creative reinterpretation and reinvention quite like Balenciaga. Their avant-garde and ingenious creations, bold use of the logo, and a consequent cult in the fashion industry have already created a strong footing throughout the world. It’s the most opportune time to introduce the brand to the country as the Indian luxury customer has matured and used fashion as a form of creative expression of their individuality” said Darshan Mehta, MD of Reliance Brands Limited. Balenciaga’s unprecedented interactions with the expanding digital realm, material developments, and today’s social responsibilities keep it at the forefront of modernity.

Reliance Brands Limited (RBL) has signed a strategic deal with the global luxury brand Balenciaga, to bring the best of global couture to the Indian market. With this longterm franchise agreement, RBL will be Balenciaga’s sole India partner to launch the brand in the country and this partnership will be RBL’s second with the parent group Kering, which houses Balenciaga. Founded by Spanishborn Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1917 and established in Paris in 1937, the original house of Balenciaga defined modern couture with its many innovations to form and technique. Since his appointment as artistic director in 2015, Demna continues to uphold the vision of Balenciaga through boundarypushing collections, which have expanded to include women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, accessories, and objets d’art.

Oversized clothing means extra comfort and room to move around, it signifies more than that to us. It is a neutral style, it doesn’t matter what size your body is. It shatters the stigma of having a perfect physique to look good in what you wear. What awaits the youth is streetwear fashion. For a very long time, unisex clothing and footwear have been quite well-liked in the market. But because they were branded and expensive, they were frequently out of reach for the majority of people!" says Gagandeep Singh, founder of A Skating Monk, "Making oversized clothing also helps us be gender neutral and makes beautiful, good-looking clothing for everyone. As one needs apparel that is easy to maneuver in, perform tricks, and ride for longer periods of time. This further caught up and spread around the world as the streetwear we know and the streetwear culture that ASM is a part of." Gagandeep shares the right way to style oversized clothes: Contrast Clothing: There has to be a contrast in what you wear. So if you wear a very baggy upper, your lower should be towards the fitted end and vice versa. If you wear a very vibrant upper, your lower should be of a more muted color and vice versa. This will make the look more appealing and easygoing. It is perfect for an outing and gives you a sharp look.

"Being a mother isn’t a one size fits all role, and we applied that mindset with our inclusive design approach while creating the Nike (M) collection,” says Carmen Zolman, Nike VP of Innovation Apparel Design. “The more we listened to expecting mothers and postpartum mothers, the more we learned and reworked the capsule to fully support her relationship with sport and movement during such a transformative time in her life.”

Undoubtedly, one of the most significant life-altering bodily experiences is giving birth. Every mom's journey and recovery is unique, whether she is a biological mom, surrogate mom, adoptive mom, adoptive stepmom, or another type of mom. Motherhood's chronology frequently continues past nine months. In reality, managing motherhood from before conception through pregnancy and postpartum can take up to 10 years for many women who have more than one kid. It can be challenging for expectant and new mothers to find the support they require to find sport and continue to move around after giving birth, as motherhood also marks a new chapter in a woman's relationship with her body and with sport. The brand was created and tested for moms, by mothers, so that she may move anyway she pleased during the duration of her pregnancy.

Burberry’s features first Sikh child model in its campaign British luxury brand, Burberry, is winning people's hearts with its latest Autumn-Winter '22 collection for children by celebrating diversity in fashion. In a first for the brand Burberry has featured its first Sikh child model. Sahib Singh, is photographed dressed in a Burberry cardigan with a pair of sneakers and a matching black turban, known traditionally as a 'Patka.' The patka is worn by Sikh boys before they reach adolescence. Posing for the camera in the cardigan and shorts, Singh's back-toschool look is completed with a Thomas Burberry Bear puffer

Footwear: A free hand with shoes could be taken as even if your whole outfit is muted, your shoes alone can pick it up. We at ASM currently are into chunky technical shoes. This makes it a combination of aesthetics and performance. It’s also not a bad idea to occasionally tuck your lower in your shoes to make them more prominent. The perfect pair of sneakers will lift up the mood and tone of the outfit. A monochromatic look with vibrant footwear can spice up the entire game. People often hesitate from experimenting with their footwear but now the trends have changed with oversized clothing.

Nike (M), exemplifies the brand's inclusive design ethos, was developed by analysing data from more than 150,000 comparative scans of pregnant and non-pregnant women. Nearly 30 female athletes who were pregnant or postpartum provided extensive feedback on fit, feel, and functionality to designers throughout the design process.

Overshirts: Another piece that has caught the attention of many is overshirts. These can easily be worn with vests and individually paired with shoes as a dress too. GenZ is highly catching up with this fashion trend by pairing it with shorts or even overalls. These breezy dresses are easy to carry and perfect for summers as well as monsoons.Mothers are the best endurance athletes, among many other things. Nike (M), which was first introduced in 2020, has now been expanded to empower women worldwide throughout all phases of pregnancy and beyond.

Antioxidants found in abundance in vitamin C aid to combat free radicals (these can trigger a number of diseases, including cancer). While anti-aging creams with retinol, hyaluronic acid, and peptides can be used at night, serums with same compounds can be used throughout the day. When purchasing a vitamin C serum, look for dark bottles. Because vitamin C degrades when exposed to light or air, dark glass bottles help keep the vitamin stable and effective.”

n the morning, cleanse your skin of all the products from the previous night. This first layer is also known as an active layer which is based on what your skin care actually needs such as (pigmentation, dehydration of skin, anti-aging). Based on the concerns apply active, treatment based products such as (Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, Niacinamide).

Your skin will look more radiant and will be protected from free radicals and UV damage if you include vitamin C in your skin care regimen. This powerful antioxidant is frequently included in moisturisers, oils, serums, and face cleansers.

According to AnubhaVir Sharma, CEO & Co- Founder- Parul Garg Beauty, “The mission is not only to help women feel empowered with the right products, but also the know-how on how to achieve looks that are the signature style of Parul Garg. Taking care of your skin after the age of 40?

Sunscreen is a must: A vital component of regular skincare is sunscreen. It shields the skin from the sun's damaging UV radiation, which are to blame for the early ageing of the skin. Apply sunscreen that has a PA grade of at least +++ and at least SPF 30. Zinc oxide sunscreens may be useful in reducing skin damage from artificial light produced by electronic devices.

According to Parul, “On many occasions, I found women sharing their challenges of finding products that blend naturally into the Indian skin. I had countless encounters with brides and other women who struggled to find the right shades of lipstick or blush for them. When they do find the right products, women are constantly seeking tutorials on how to use these products flawlessly. That is how the brAND was born.”

When we browse through any lifestyle magazine today, one noticeable change that we’ll observe is that skincare is finally getting its due. Earlier the conversations were all about make-up; we have finally progressed to understand that without good skin, make-up can do little. Hence, the Holy Grail we are chasing today is a skincare routine that’s a go-to for all skin types. Getting the basics right Ideally, we should tend to our skin at least twice every day—which is also known as the AM-PM skin routine.

A regime for flawless skin for all skin types

Following are some skincare recommendations for people over the age of 40: Exfoliation should be a part of your beauty routine: The scrub you use shouldn't be too abrasive and should be tailored to your skin type. Use a cream-based scrub on dry skin to both cleanse and moisturize the skin. Use a gel-based scrub on oily skin to reduce oil production and achieve spotless skin. Always wash with a mild, non-foaming product, and then moisturize well to seal in the moisture.

Next step is applying a moisturiser on the basis of your skin-type. For Oily skin use a gel based moisturiser and for dry skin use a cream based moisturiser. The final steps include applying sunscreen with SPF 30 and above. For people who apply make-up, sunscreens with foundation are also available. In the evening, always start with cleansing your skin: You can use a cleanser that is soap free if you have sensitive or dry skin and a regular face wash if you have oily skin to wash your face. Apply your active ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, Niacinamide, or Retinol. The final step includes applying a moisturiser. This is the best time to exfoliate your skin. There are three key factors to remember here: A 60-seconds pause between each step helps in meticulous application and affords enough time for the skin to soak in the products. Try to stick to the steps as mentioned because there’s a science to it. The lighter products or ones that require deeper penetration are applied initially to be sealed in with the heavier products. As it is said, less is more, absorption of anything beyond the 3 layers is not possible. Personalising the routine As of now, we have been discussing skincare regime at its most basic; when your skin needs more help, you need to do more. Hence, if you’re in your early 30s, you could add some anti-aging ingredients to your regime such as Hyaluronic acid (HA) or ceramides. The former is a particularly strong contender and if you choose it in the form of a skin bio-remodelling treatment such as Profhilo, you’ll be looking at smooth, firm and youthful skin as a result. This is because this injectable form of pure HA aids your skin’s ability to generate elastin and collagen that’s critical to the elasticity of young skin. Profhilo is widely known to slow down the aging process. Skin boosters like this help immensely in retaining the moisture of the skin from within to give you a flawless appearance. The basic go-to skincare routine is as simple as ‘abc...’ but to customize it to your skin’s requirement takes some work. Always remember to keep your skin’s health central when you customize your regime.

Skincare at any age is the vital part of our lives. As we age, the fat beneath our skin and surrounding our muscles begins to melt and alter, causing wrinkles and creases to appear on our skin. Dr. Akriti Gupta explains “Our skin's production of elastin, natural lipids, and collagen declines as we age. The result is skin that is drier and less supple. Inadequate skincare practices made while a person is young first become apparent in their late 30s or early 40s. Thus, age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles start to show up on the skin. A skincare routine that offers both curative and preventative measures will be optimal after age 40. This implies that it should take care of the issues at hand while also shielding the skin from additional harm.”

Increase fluid consumption: Eat a balanced diet and drink enough water. Consuming fresh produce gives your skin the critical antioxidants it needs. Skin that is properly hydrated appears healthy and glowing. Adding lemon and aloe vera juice to your water can help to maintain a natural glow. Under eye care: One of the earliest signs of ageing is the development of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. Here, the skin is delicate and requires care. Use an effective under-eye cream or gel that will hydrate your eyes and reduce wrinkles as you sleep. Follow a night care regime: Apply a night cream after using a gentle cleanser to wash your face. Your skin will be hydrated by the night cream, becoming softer and more radiant. Look for nighttime skincare products that contain retinol/retinoids to boost cellular regeneration, antioxidants to help your skin recover from environmental stresses, and hyaluronic acid to bind moisture to your skin. Avoid sugar: The skin may get glycated if you consume a lot of sugar. This indicates that the sugar can bind to proteins and cause fluid retention, which can cause wrinkles.

Stephen King calls Donald Trump ‘horrible President’, ‘horrible person’New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS) This is a frank portrayal of the extraordinary life of acclaimed dancer, actor and activist Mallika Sarabhai, very aptly titled 'In Free Fall: My Experiments With Living' (Speaking Tiger). She doesn't hold back in talking about her "thirty-year obsession with being thin"; her addictions like smoking and how she "hypnotized" her way out of it; her fascination with alternate therapies like Pranik healing, Ayurveda and colour therap;, and the beauty treatments she uses for "future-proofing" her body so that she can continue to dance and perform for years to come. She speaks with equal candour about her battles with grief and depression - when she lost her beloved father, the space scientist Vikram Sarabhai, in 1971; a painful break-up with a man she loved; and her ups and downs with her children, due, in part, to her own Therelationships.lossofher mother, dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai, in 2016, left her bereft; yoga, dance, transcendental meditation and NVCCommunicationNon-Violent-were some of the ways that she coped. Laced with humour and an earthy wisdom, "In Free Fall" is all about coming to terms with yourself and your body and finding the lifestyle that works for you. And how to make mistakes, pick yourself up and carry on. Never preachy, this self-help memoir delivers an immensely useful message for anyone who wants good health - and happiness. "For years people have asked me, 'What is your routine? What do you do to still dance this way? How do you have so much energy?' and on and on. The lockdown left me alone on the Darpana (Academy of Performing Arts) campus (in Ahmedabad founded by her parents) and I felt I wanted to write this. It became a memoir because one's body and what you end up doing are so intertwined," said the dynamic ParliamentarianDiplomat-author-dancer-turned-author.Shahsi Tharoor has described the book as "an engaging narration of the life of one of India's most iconic artistes". Announcing the publication, Renuka Chatterjee, VP Publishing at Speaking Tiger, said: "This is a book that is honest, downto-earth, and inspirational. We are sure that many readers will come away from it feeling that they can change their lives if they want, and cope with just about anything! In the process, Mallika also gives us glimpses into her illustrious family that are both heartwarming and intriguing." As one of India's leading choreographers and dancers, Mallika Sarabhai has been codirector of the Darpana Academy for Performing Arts for nearly 40 years. She played the role of Draupadi in Peter Brook's "The Mahabharata", first in French and then English, performing in France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, Australia, Japan and Scotland. An activist for education, human rights and women's empowerment, her numerous stage productions have raised awareness, highlighted crucial issues and advocated change, developing her own contemporary dance vocabulary to create short and full-length works that have been presented throughout India and in over 50 countries across the world.

Los Angeles, Aug 22 (IANS) 'Game of Thrones' novelist George R.R. Martin has spoken about network HBO's franchise, which is adapted from his hit book series. He shared that he advocated for many more seasons for the series, giving the storytelling a larger canvas. Although 'Game of Thrones' was a superlative hit for HBO, becoming an Emmy darling and garnering a massive fanbase over the years, series co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss elected to end the series after eight seasons. He spoke to The Wall Street Journal, reports Variety. "I was saying it needs to be 10 seasons at least and maybe 12, 13. I lost that one," he said.

Martin also spoke about the unconventional process for developing a spinoff of the main series 'House of The Dragon', in which five teams developing separate concepts visited Martin in Santa Fe to pitch their respective visions.

Los Angeles, Aug 15 (IANS) Legendary author Stephen King doesn't like former US President Donald Trump and he is very public about it, reports Variety.

Ultimately, Martin didn't have much say in the final stretch of 'Game of Thrones', as the events of the series stretched beyond the storyline established by books he has published so far. "I had no contribution to the later seasons except, you know, inventing the world, the story and all the characters," he said.

The author used words like "horrible President", "horrible person" and "sociopath" to describe the former U.S. President, whose administration in February 2020 negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban that excluded the Afghan government, freed 5,000 imprisoned Taliban soldiers and set a date for the final withdrawal.

"I believe I have more influence now (on 'House of the Dragona') than I did on the original show."

In an interview with the 'Sunday Times', where he was in conversation with 'Pointless' presenter Richard Osman, King said, quoted by Variety: "I happen to think that Trump was a horrible President and is a horrible person." "I think he actually engaged in criminal behaviour and, certainly, I felt that he was a sociopath who tried to overturn American democracy not out of any political wish of his own but because he could not admit that he had lost."

One of the most prolific authors on the planet, King has published 64 novels, beginning with 'Carrie' in 1974, which have sold more than 350 million copies, in a career spanning 50 years. His 65th, 'Fairy Tale' will be published in September.

Rushdie’s son says author off ventilator, retains ‘feisty sense of humour’ New York, Aug 14 (IANS) Booker Prize-winning author Salman Rushdie remains in critical condition, but retains his feisty sense of humour, his son Zafar Rushdie said in a statement, reports 'Variety'. We are extremely relieved that yesterday he was taken off the ventilator and additional oxygen and he was able to say a few words," the statement said. "Though his life-changing injuries are severe, his usual feisty and defiant sense of humour remains intact. We are so grateful to all the audience members who bravely leapt to his defence and administered first aid along with the police and doctors who have cared for him and for the outpouring of love and support from around the world. "We ask for continued patience and privacy as the family comes together at his bedside to support and help him through this time," Zafar Rushdie's statement added, according to 'Variety'. Rushdie was stabbed multiple times by a 24-year-old man named Hadi Matar moments before he was scheduled to deliver a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York on Friday morning (U.S. Eastern Time). On Friday evening, the author's agent, Andrew Wylie, had said in a statement to the 'New York Times': "The news is not good."

He revealed how he doesn't consider himself melodious but just trusts his music. He added, "I feel I am a besura. It resembles our culture and always gets better with time." Lucky also revealed the fun parts of creating music videos. "I find the process of recording a song much more enjoyable than shooting for it. One can make as many mistakes as possible and correct them while recording since nobody is watching you. But in the case of shooting, the tight schedules and the need for cinematic perfection is something that brings a lot of pressure." Reminiscing about his early days, he mentioned how he ran a carpet cleaning business as he did not want to act in films. "My father wanted me to act, but the times had changed drastically. I enjoyed being among musicians way more; it has always been fun with them." He also explained how he spent a lot of time looking at legendary musicians to learn from them.
