SEPTEMBER 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Editor’s V iew Dear Readers, In July 1989, Reader’s Digest published an article “Surprising Key to the Happiest Couples.” Written by two psychologists, they concluded that romance and love are important in marriage, but it’s friendship that puts love to the ultimate test. The same fact was stated more than 5000 years ago in our Hindu scripture, Mahabharat. Yudhishthira was asked one question, “kimsvin mitram grihesatah?” (who is the friend of a householder?). He answered, “bhaaryaa mitram grihesatah,” meaning the friend of a householder is his spouse. Wow, what a pious sentiment to start a new life with your soulmate. Lately, I have been doing a lot of research on Hindu weddings and rituals for my upcoming book, “Indian Weddings - Ideas and Inspiration” and one interesting fact I found is that our Hindu Scripture is full of practical advice and guidance. In this month’s Words to Live By column, I have listed several more sacred thoughts from our Hindu scriptures. In this wedding issue, we include articles with little different twist on love and marriage. Be sure to read Love Poems by Rabindranath Tagore, the Must Read Books related to weddings, “We Do:” Celebrating Fitness Together By Nisha Jani, and last but not least, Fashion for a Soulful Wedding by Siddhi Desai. In the article “We Do:” Celebrating Fitness Together, Nisha outlines several ways to incorporate impressionable wellness tactics during the hectic, but lively pre-wedding events. In Fashion for a Soulful Wedding, not only did Siddhi write the article, but she also designed the looks that she and her kids modeled for the article. Desh-Videsh put put together a team from South Florida to capture the looks - photographer Jerry Cantave at Infinite Loop Photography as well as hair stylist Bonnie and makeup artist Summer from Zaina Hair Salon. Thanks to our readers and all our wedding vendors, we get many submissions for our real wedding section. Sometimes, it is difficult to select a few for our Real Weddings section. Our team of editors thoroughly read every submitted wedding story and pick a few unique weddings. This month, we present four such unique weddings. Bhavika and Rushil’s wedding at The Barn at Rembert Farms in Gainesville, Jana and Vasant’s wedding where two love birds one from England and one from Atlanta meet, Jinal and Pujan’s wedding in which Pujan’s romantic proposal took place on a boat in Las Vegas, and Susan and Nirlep’s destination wedding at a beautiful resort, The Grand at Moon Palace in Cancun, Mexico. No wedding issue is complete without one or two Bollywood weddings. The difference this month is that the wedding and engagement ceremony we cover are those of two very popular actresses, Sonam Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. As always, your feedback about the articles in this and every issue is welcomed by myself and my team. Send us an with your thoughts to editor@deshvidesh.com. Don’t miss joining us for our last Bridal Expo of the year! We’ll be hosting the Orlando MyShadi Bridal Expo at the Hilton Orlando on Sunday, September 16, from 12 noon - 5 pm. Admission and parking are free, so stop by to meet with event planning vendors, get a start on your Navratri and Diwali shopping, and watch the designer fashion show! One afternoon at the MyShadi Bridal Expo will save you time in the long run - and means more time for fun! Raj Shah Managing Editor

From Facebook to FaceTime and flying kisses to flying airplanes, Jinal and Pujan believed that true love could reach across any distance. Friendship morphed into a lifelong relationship for Jinal Choksi, a Pharmacist, and Pujan Patel, a Senior Accountant, who first met at a wedding in 2014. Their love showed no bound as Jinal lived in Florida and Pujan in Maryland. From Facebook to FaceTime and flying kisses to flying airplanes, they believed that true love could reach across any distance. In December 2016, Pujan took the opportunity to surprise and propose to Jinal at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. He made ar22

rangements for a private gondola boat ride and hired a professional photographer to capture each moment. With a speech ready and ring in his hand, during the boat ride, Pujan went down on one knee and asked Jinal to marry him. Jinal happily said “YES” and felt over the moon with this romantic proposal. May 12, 2018 was the day that was decided for their joyous union as husband and wife. The couple and their enthusiastic family handled all the arrangements. A gala celebration began

with pre-wedding events: Mehndi, Pithi, Ganesh Puja, and Grah Shanti that were held at their respective homes. The first joint pre-wedding event was the Garba. The backdrop included traditional Indian decor and a jula for the lovebirds. Multi-hued draping, shimmering market lights, lotus pots, custom made dandiyas with the couple’s name inscribed, and a Radha Krishna centerpiece adorned the setting. The following day, a grand wedding and reception was held

While Susan lives in Cordele, Georgia, and Nirlep Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the distance of a six hour drive didn’t keep the two from meeting frequently. The two dated for almost a year and traveled together to beautiful locales such as Charleston, Savannah, Atlanta, and Las Vegas. After dating for some time, Nirlep proposed to Susan on July 2, 2017 in the most unique way. He wrote the proposal in the form of a prescription on his pad and handed it to her because for Nirlep, this was the ideal way for a physician to propose to a pharmacist. After handing her the prescription proposal, Nirlep got down on one knee and placed the ring on her finger. Though nervous and overwhelmed, Susan was thrilled for the propos-

As they wanted a destination wedding, they decided an event management company would ensure their families did not go through the stress of planning such a big wedding. The couple decided to

They pair dated for four years, and it was over time that they realized theirs was a forever love. Vasant’s spectacular proposal was a life-changing moment for Jana, one she will no doubt cherish for years. Vasant created a treasure hunt at the W Downtown Atlanta where he left love letters and gifts in various spots. The final and most incredible spot was the hotel’s helipad where Vasant proposed. The couple celebrated in the lobby bar where family and friends were eagerly awaiting the happy couple. Although Vasant and Jana are from London and New Jersey respectively, Atlanta had become home through their careers. The couple decided on the W Midtown Atlanta Hotel after being enchanted by the space and décor. Over 250 guests joined Vasant and Jana on March 31, 2018 for an elegant celebration.

In January 2017, Rushil and Bhavika joined her family on a trip to Colorado. After spending an eventful second day in Estes Park playing in the snow and shopping, Rushil drove Bhavika to a lakeside so they could watch the sunset. Bhavika was so cold, but Rushil reminded her they didn’t get a couple’s shot that day. So, Bhavika took off her coat and turned around to see Rushil on one knee. The couple decided on a wedding date of January 27, 2018. Bhavika and Rushil wanted Gainesville, Florida, to be the site of their celebrations given they began their journey there. The Barn at Rembert Farms in Gainesville was the ideal place for festivities.

Rushil entered the mandap to the “Jash ne Baahare” instrumental with his and the bride’s parents on his arms. Bhavika walked in under a floral canopy handmade by her sisters with the “Kaise Mujhe” instrumental playing in the background. The beautifully decorated reception followed a rustic theme

Fashion for a Soulful Wedding By Siddhi Desai

I

love our Indian wedding season for many reasons. First, it’s amazing to be able to share in the culmination and excitement of two discrete people falling so madly in love with each other that they decide to spend the rest of their lives together as one, working together from that day forward on turning each other’s lifelong dreams into reality. It’s an immensely beautiful and exciting journey that two people are committing to be on together forever.

Next, I find it so refreshing to be able to meet so many people that I haven’t had a chance to see or keep in touch with in a long time other than on social media. I love meeting up with old friends and family from years past as hearing about the progress they have made in their lives, especially for my most authentic relationships, warms my inner soul and brings me great joy.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Indian weddings allow us to experience and enjoy our exquisite culture of art, rituals and traditions, food, fun, and frolicking. Rooted in spirituality, our extensive wedding rituals serve as a catalyst in our culture in creating an incredibly strong and indelible bond of marital union and rich values, which are founded on the premise of always putting family first. Well, I still need to tune myself into that mystic world, but for now this fabric made in such a magical city certainly speaks to me. Love Poems by Rabindranath Tagore Compiled by Raj Shah, Managing Editor You are about to get married. No doubt, you have many things on your mind, and expressing endearing words about your soulmate may be hard. Whether for your invitation, wedding programs, or special vows, you might need some inspiration! Often, a great quote about true love, few lines of dialogue, love poem, or song lyrics can help you express yourself more eloquently. To inspire your next love sonnet about your soulmate we present a collection of love poems from Rabindranath Tagore, Bengali poet, novelist, educator, Nobel Laureate for Literature, and one of the greatest writers in modern Indian literature. The works of Rabindranath Tagore, captured the breadth and depth of patriotism, devotion, celebration, and the different phases and faces of love – especially his poems.

In his blog, Jayant Menon describes Tagore’s love poems as follows: Tagore’s poetry achieved a transcendence, an almost ethereal quality without ever being verbose or overly earnest. His verse would meander, but never wander. It is timeless, but it’s permanence comes from the spirituality that his words embodied, and not as a direct consequence of being associated with a name that introduced to the west much that is great about India (and vice versa). Here are some of my favorite and best love poems by Tagore. For more poems and quotes from the legendary Tagore, please visit www.deshvidesh. com/Love poems by Tagore.

Passing Breeze YES, I know, this is nothing but thy love, O beloved of my heart-this golden light that dances upon the leaves, these idle clouds sailing across the sky,

this passing breeze leaving its coolness upon my forehead. The morning light has flooded my eyes-

This month, we explore shlokas from the Ancient Hindu scriptures that describe bride and groom’s feelings toward one another.

this is thy message to my heart. Thy face is bent from above, thy eyes look down on my eyes, and my heart has touched thy feet.

The Kiss Lips’ language to lips’ ears. Two drinking each other’s heart, it seems. Two roving loves who have left home, pilgrims to the confluence of lips .Two waves rise by the law of love to break and die on two sets of lips. Two wild desires craving each other meet at last at the body’s limits. Love’s writing a song in dainty letters, layers of kiss-calligraphy on lips. Plucking flowers from two sets of lips perhaps to thread them into a chain later. This sweet union of lips is the red marriage-bed of a pair of smiles. 84

Mangalyam tantunanena mama jivana hethuna, Kanthe badhnami subhage twam jeeva sarada satam “This sacred thread - Mangal Sutra - is being tied around your neck for my long life. Dear maiden of auspicious attributes, I hope you too live to be a hundred.”

After a couple completes Saptapadi in a Hindu wedding ceremony, the groom recites this shloka seeking the bride’s friendship. Sakha saptapada bhava Sakhayau saptapada babhuva Sakhyanthe gameyam Sakyathe mayosham Sakhyanme mayoshataha “With the seven steps, We have become friends, Let me reach your friendship Let me not be separated from your friendship Let your friendship not separated from me.” SEPTEMBER 2018 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

Unending Love I seem to have loved you in numberless forms, numberless times... In life after life, in age after age, forever. My spellbound heart has made and remade the necklace of songs, That you take as a gift, wear round your neck in your many forms, In life after life, in age after age, forever. Whenever I hear old chronicles of love, it’s age old pain, It’s ancient tale of being apart or together. As I stare on and on into the past, in the end you emerge, Clad in the light of a pole-star, piercing the darkness of time. You become an image of what is remembered forever. You and I have floated here on the stream that brings from the fount. At the heart of time, love of one for another. We have played along side millions of lovers, Shared in the same shy sweetness of meeting, the distressful tears of farewell, Old love but in shapes that renew and renew forever. Today it is heaped at your feet, it has found its end in you The love of all man’s days both past and forever: Universal joy, universal sorrow, universal life. The memories of all loves merging with this one love of ours And the songs of every poet past and forever.”

She Is Near to My Heart She is near to my heart as the meadow-flower to the earth; she is sweet to me as sleep is to tired limbs. My love for her is my life flowing in its fullness, like a river in autumn flood, running with serene abandonment. My songs are one with my love, like the murmur of a stream, that sings with all its waves and current. 86

“We Do:” Celebrating Fitness Together By Nisha Jani

uring wedding season, one of the main themes is chaos! Between planning the big day and organizing the months leading up to it, it is so easy to lose yourself amidst the invitation cards and RSVPs. Stop! Breathe! Relax! These are things we are not accustomed to hearing during the process. But if there is anything I have learned during the most stressful times of my life, it’s that sometimes, by stopping and feeling aware of the moment, I was left with the clarity I needed to successfully complete the challenge. Have you ever seen children imitating their parents? This imitation goes beyond the young years of our youth. Humans tend to be impressionable. If we are influenced so easily by other things, why not 90

turn this into our advantage? Why not influence our families in a healthy way? During this wedding season, use this as your leverage. Mental stress, one of the most potent causes of hormonal imbalance and the body’s inflammatory responses, is in abundance during the months leading to the wedding. By creating a sense of calm, starting with yourself, you will lay out the peaceful environment you want to work efficiently in for your big day. As bride or groom, you will influence your surroundings to also operate on a more efficient, serene level.

exciting way to involve members of the family into being an integral part of the wedding. The best part? It’s physical activity. Coming together to engage in exercise is a source of endorphins, the feel-good hormones in our bodies. We feel great, we are in a creative environment, and we learn to move out of our comfort zones! Family walks: A bride I once interviewed left me with something

I never forgot. Every chance they got, she & her family would take walks together to get their minds off wedding prep and just enjoy each other’s company. It was a fantastic way to breathe fresh air, decompress, and look at the bigger picture. The walks brought them together and gave them something to bond over instead of letting the pains of wedding planning tear them apart during heated moments.

Here are some ways during the hectic, but lively pre-wedding season to incorporate impressionable wellness tactics! Family dances: the Sangeet is an event known for dance and celebration, and an opportunity to showcase a myriad of performances. A family performance, one where routine practices are held in person or online, is an 92

him to India for the ceremony. Jonas and his parents left for the United State the next day. During their four day trip to India, they visited Priyanka Chopra’s old house and also spent some quality time at an orphanage. The gorgeous couple looked very much in love as they celebrated their engagement. Nick

posted a simple message. . .”Future Mrs. Jonas,” “my heart” and “my love.” He wore a formal sherwani outfit for the occasion and Priyanka also donned traditional attire. Madhu Chopra, Priyanka’s mother, and her brother proudly posed with the couple, as did Nick’s parents. The Chopra family posed alongside Jonas family.

The roka is the first ceremony of Priyanka and Nick’s Indian wedding. Sources indicate Priyanka Chopra would like everything to follow Indian styles and traditions to respect the values of her family, and certainly those of an Indian wedding. Now, the whole world is eagerly waiting for their marriage ceremony.
