Hiren and Kunj’s romance is anything but the cliché of young students meeting for the first time. The two were acquaintances in college, but didn’t truly connect until much later, and they haven’t looked back since. Both are driven and ambitious, and theirs is a story about unconditional support and respect for each other’s careers and lives with a strong foundation built on friendship and trust. Edito r’s V iew Dear Readers, Once again, it is a very exciting time since the wedding season is upon us. Aruna and I just came back from India where we attended three weddings in one week, each with two to three events. It was very exhausting, but also very exciting! We saw new trends in Indian weddings, unique food items and new styles in clothing. As some of you know, I love Garba! One of the weddings we attended was in Baroda, the town where new steps of garba begin, so I was also able to learn some new steps! Enough about me, let me extend congratulations to all the newlyweds out there. You have all no doubt some very exciting and hectic few months. Some of you returned from your honeymoon and are trying to get back to a routine life. I am sure your parents, in-laws, uncles, aunties and friends who have been married for a few years must giving you plenty of Do’s and Don’ts for married life. So let me give you my two cents worth, coming from Hindu Scriptures. Marriage transforms one’s entire life-style and creates a whole new realm of duties, obligations, privileges and joys. Firstly it is important to bear in mind that a Hindu marriage is not merely a particular contractile arrangement between two consenting adults. It is the union of two entire families and many of the rites in the wedding ceremony stress this important fact. Shatpadi Stotra Next, I congratulate all those newly-engaged couples out there! It is our pleasure to bring you another edition of the Desh-Videsh Wedding resource special. This issue includes real wedding stories that will inspire your wedding planning. Be sure to check out the articles on Mehndi traditions and Islamic wedding rituals for more detailed information on the subjects. Our young and talented writer Chahna Tailor shares in her article “Yoga & Ayurveda” about the body and mind. She shares, “Ayurveda, the medicinal science, helps us to cleanse our body and mind through our dinacharya (daily routine), ratricharya (night routine), and ritucharya (seasonal routine).” This is very very important for men and women who are getting married to learn. Rather than doing a crash diet or going to an expensive spa, which may work only on a temporary basis, using our Ancient hindu techniques will be much more beneficial. Now let me close my column by reminding all of you about our two upcoming MyShadi Bridal Expos, one on March 29 in Raleigh and the other on April 5 in Orlando. See you there! Raj Shah Managing Editor

The two were acquaintances in college, but didn’t truly connect until much later, and they haven’t looked back since. Both are driven and ambitious, and theirs is a story about unconditional support and respect for each other’s careers and lives with a strong foundation built on friendship and trust. Kunj and Hiren went to college in Florida and were introduced by a mutual friend at a birthday party in Ft. Lauderdale. They began dating only a couple of months after that first meeting. Hiren’s sense of humor was in Kunj’s words “impossible to resist.” They dated for over two years before leaving Miami for Orlando and better career prospects. Kunj found a photo album on one of the park’s benches, and as she looked through the pictures that captured their memories and love she found Hiren’s message on the last page - “Will you marry me?” Kunj closed the album to find Hiren on his knee as he repeated his question. Kunj’s answer was a heartfelt yes. Kunj’s pre-wedding events included a Grah Shanti, Mehndi and Pithi at home. For the

arishma experienced the most beautiful adrenaline rush of her life when she first talked to Preston in an anatomy dissection group during her first month of medical school. While Karishma delights in Preston’s company wherever they go together, smitten by his gentle, witty nature and dashing looks, Preston took some time before asking her out for a date. Six years into this relationship, their love blossomed into something truly special. Karishma planned her first trip with Preston to the majestic Olympic National Park. However, she was oblivious to what he had up his sleeve. Meandering through the forest, the two were swept away by breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, stunning landscapes, sandy beaches, rocky shores,
and a tranquil lakeshore. Hiking along the trail, they arrived at Crescent Lake. Mesmerized by the shimmering beauty around them, Karishma’s happiness knew no bounds when Preston made her sit by the shore, played her favorite song, and asked her to marry him.
With Preston and Karishma’s hectic medical careers, they chose to hire a planner to keep everything organized, including tasks such as site visits, cake testing, makeup artist testing, etc. The Haldi ceremony was an intimate affair for friends and family in Fort Lauderdale. Karishma’s Haldi was a blast with scrumptious food on the table and memorable moments. Karishma and Preston had a church wedding in Preston’s hometown in Indiana. Karishma’s dream wedding led her to a yacht called the Seafair in Miami, an ultimate venue where sea and sky converge. The big day in the couple’s life was decorated with fuschia and orange flowers and little elephants at the entryway. At the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami, the Baraat arrived with the groom dancing to Daler Mehndi’s hits and dance songs. Karishma felt as if she was living a scene straight from a Bollywood movie when she circled seven rounds with Preston around the fire.

Aditi was born and raised in Vadodara, and though she had a green card since childhood, decided to give the card up to settle permanently in India. Mital chose Aditi’s birthday to profess his love and went down on his knees, which took Aditi by surprise. She considers it to be her best birthday to date. For the wedding planner, Aditi didn’t have to look far. Her younger sister, Parita, showcased her event management skills with the brilliant decor at ceremonial events. hat’s the secret ingredient to a long-lasting loving marriage? For Kishan, it is falling in love with Fenisha and getting to know her with each passing day. Kishan knew in his heart that he wanted to get married the traditional Indian way. Growing up, he witnessed the special bond his parents shared and to this date, their love is still fresh and flourishing. His search to find a perfect life partner who could fill his life with the same kind of happiness, love, and compassion led him to Fenisha. She too was curious to learn more about Kishan so she drove with her parents to Parrotsville, Tennessee, to meet him. The two met and instantly connected as they lost track of time talking and getting to know each other. Fenisha and Kishan decided to make it official and held an engagement ceremony

Yoga & Ayurveda The Sisters Sciences
I
n our ancient history, Yoga and Ayurveda have been known as sister sciences.
Yoga, the spiritual science, helps us to achieve moksha (selfrealization) through practices that help us determine our purpose and how we can achieve liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Ayurveda, the medicinal science, helps us to cleanse our body and mind through our dinacharya (daily routine), ratricharya (night routine), and ritucharya (seasonal routine). How we live every day determines our health, therefore Ayurveda focuses on diet, lifestyle, and environment in order to keep our elemental constitution in balance throughout the changes in life and nature. 70

may be difficult for the person to practice asanas, pranayama, or even meditation for an extended period of time. If you have pains in the body or the mind is not calm, how can you cultivate a practice of focus? Ayurveda can help with this. Many alleviating therapies applied in Ayurveda heal the body and prepare it to be in its best state for a Yoga practice. Some of these include wholesome food intake, use of remedial herbs, fresh air, and detoxifying practices. You can even see parallels with how Ayurveda uses Yoga principles. Ayurveda requires us to do what is needed to keep ourselves in balance. If we know that something is aggravating, then we are supposed to listen to our bodies and avoid it. For example, we know that overeating can cause symptoms such as bloating and fatigue but if we continue to indulge, it violates principles such as tapas
(self-discipline) and santosha (contentment) since overeating is a sign of taking more than what is needed. Another fundamental element of Yoga, sauca, requires us to maintain cleanliness both externally and internally, which means cleanliness of mind, speech, and body. Healthy intake, consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and lentils, can be healing in itself to our body.
But, how do they relate to each other? There are some requirements needed in order to achieve selfrealization. To practice Yoga in a safe manner, the body and mind must be healthy. If the mind is unable to focus, then the mind is considered to be not ready for Yoga. If the body is undergoing sickness, then it MARCH 2020 - WWW.DESHVIDESH.COM

etched in Punam’s mind as her ‘Yes’ is in Atit’s. Atit and Punam sought the help of wedding planner Juan Carlos Castillo to coordinate and plan the details of their wedding. They chose Cancun, Mexico, as the destination for their wedding and reception due to the easy accessibility from Atit’s hometown Houston and Punam’s family home in Florida. Juan Castillo’s expertise as a wedding planner ensured that Punam and Atit were able to enjoy the process with weekly conference calls. A couple of quick trips to Mexico by the bride and groom were all that was needed to finalize the menu, venue, and décor. An outdoor pithi ceremony with vibrant décor and Bollywood music at Punam’s

After he was seated, the ring bearers, flower girls, and bridesmaids walked down the aisle. Punam, escorted by her father, looked gorgeous and stole Atit’s breath away as she glided down the aisle. Atit and Punam made their grand appearance as the newly married couple to Calvin Harris’ “Feels So Good.” After their first dance to Arijit Singh’s “Pal ek pal,” Atit surprised Punam by picking her up in his arms as fireworks exploded in the sky marking their special moment. However, Punam, a trained and accomplished dancer, managed to surprise Atit as well with her solo performance to “Deewani Mastana” making the deeply touched Atit forget the words of his speech.

rust, mutual respect, compassion and a deep love of Star Wars are the cornerstones of Trupti and Patrick’s relationship. They met in July 2012 and quickly bonded over stories and trivia about Star Wars lore. Despite their diametrically different backgrounds and cultures, Trupti and Patrick became compatible due to their respect and appreciation for their differences and each other’s cultures. The next step became apparent with the couple adopted a puppy together. Being parents to the adorable but more-than-a
handful puppy in their lives made them realize the resilience and stability of their relationship. So, in a modest kitchen, over a sink, Trupti and Patrick proposed to each other. No drama, no kneeling, and no ring, just an honest, heartfelt vow to love and cherish each other for the rest of their lives. Trupti and Patrick chose to seek the help of a wedding planner to coordinate their “East meets West” inspired wedding. Trupti and Patrick’s wedding celebrated both their cultures with a mehndi party for the women and a rehearsal dinner as well as pre-wedding rituals.

The wedding ceremony featured purple and orange flower decor and a few creative elements from Star Wars. At the Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland, Washington, the groom arrived in a white sherwani. Bollywood songs played in the background, while Trupti mesmerized all in her bridal outfit. As she walked in wearing a beautiful light orange saree, embroidered red veil, and green bangles, Patrick was bowled over by her beauty, charm, and elegance. The duo tied the knot as per the Hindu rituals. Western pop music played in the background as the first dance kicked off the start of
the reception. The newlyweds embraced each other and danced to “All You Need is Love from the album Love Actually. The happiest day of their life segued from dancing to the cutting of the cake, and a scrumptious dinner. Guests and newlyweds alike celebrated on the dance floor into the evening.

Mehndi Ceremony:
Rituals, Customs & Significance
M
ehndi is an art of applying decorative designs on hands, feet, and arms. It is an integral part of Indian traditional weddings so much that the ritual has a dedicated day to its name that is celebrated in its full entirety. Festive music, vibrant dance, lavish decor, and mouthwatering delicacies with great pomp have everyone thoroughly enjoying this beautification ritual. Ladies are usually adorned with mehndi (also known as henna) on many festivities and occasions such as Karva Chauth. The dark amber color of mehndi holds a special significance in both Indian and Muslim traditions and is considered auspicious when the color darkens or retains its hue for a longer time.
In South Asian weddings, the mehndi event is a ritual where henna is applied on the bride’s hands and feet in anticipation of the wedding ceremony.

Prophet Muhammad. However, the body of art of mehndi had its roots in ancient India from where it spread to different nooks and corners of the world. Discovery of the henna plant’s cooling properties led to the popularity of use on the skin. The plant has even been used to color wool, silk, animal skin, human hair, and more.
History and Background Mehndi is famed for its medicinal properties and use in body art around the world. The word originates from the Sanskrit word mendhika referring to the plant from which it is derived. References suggest that mehndi had its presence in varied cultures apart from India such as Egypt, Asia Minor, Middle East, and was even used by Cleopatra, pharaohs, and

Lawsonia inermis, the botanical name of the mehndi plant, is generally found in tropical climates on the Indian subcontinent. Fresh henna leaves, as opposed to powdered henna, have no odor. The leaves of the plant are used to produce a paste that leaves a dark reddish-orange color after application.

Application and Design The tip of the cones are cut according to the desired thickness of the line. Cones are then squeezed lightly to apply uninterrupted designs, all ranging from simple to ornate depending on the individual’s taste or the occasion. When having mehndi applied, it is best to wear short sleeves to keep the hands and arms exposed. From stunning, intricate designs to checkered and geometric patterns, the design options are endless. For minimalists, Arabic designs are elegant. Having mantras etched is the latest fad. Wedding motifs such as elephants and palanquin are the alltime traditional favorites. The feet are not to be forgotten - mehndi done in a prominent motif in the center is quite popular.

him to seek on the wedding night. For some, weddings are a time for doubt and stress. Anxiety and nervousness might be overwhelming, but given mehndi is scientifically proven to be a cooling property, the art of applying henna is a way to calm the bride’s nerves.

Once applied, the mehndi is left to dry for color blending and uniformity. To enhance the color outcome, a mixture of lemon juice and sugar is applied to the Mehndi. Once dry, the mendhi naturally crumbles and falls off. Using water to remove the mehndi is not common practice as this can make the color lighter.
Mehndi as a Ritual In South Asian weddings, the mehndi event is a ritual where henna is applied on the bride’s hands and feet in anticipation of the wedding ceremony. Not only limited to the bride, all the bridesmaids and guests have beautiful designs done on their hands and arms from hired professionals. The ritual involves the ceremonial singing of traditional songs to the beat of drums and dholaks. Mehndi designs for the bride are elaborate, intricate, and as part of the tradition, it often includes the name of husband-to-be for

Islamic Weddings Remarkable Rituals Combined with Elegance and Style
W
eddings are celebrated with great fervor around the world and across cultures. What makes them special though are the diverse rituals and traditions that are truly fascinating. In Islam, marriage is seen as a righteous act, a social commitment, and an act of devotion towards significant other. Here is a glimpse into the ceremonial rituals that make the wedding an elegant and stylish affair.

Pre-Wedding Rituals
The most exciting part of a fulfilling marital bliss begins with some significant rituals before the wedding day arrives. Salat-ul-Ishtikara When preparing married, this prayer is performed keeping the future partner in mind to seek blessings and steer clear of doubts. It places the utmost trust in Allah’s will. An Imam performs this ritual to officially announce the wedding. Imam Zamin The groom’s mother visits the house of the bride and ties a silver or gold coin wrapped in silk cloth on the bride’s hand. This ritual is performed to ward off any evil and ensures the safety of the bride. Mangni Mangni, widely known as the engagement function, is the coming together of families, relatives, and friends.

They bear witness to the ring ceremony of betrothal, exchange gifts, and shower blessings on the duo. Manjha Colloquially known as the Haldi ceremony, a blend of turmeric, sandalwood, and rose water is applied to the bride and groom in their respective homes. This is followed by a ritual bath that doesn’t allow them to leave the house before the wedding.
Rasm-e-Heena (Mehndi) Henna (mehndi) designs are applied to the hands and feet of the bride. This ceremonial art is very detailed and intricate in its pattern. The darker the mehndi color, the stronger and loving the bond is said to be. Traditionally the groom’s name is hidden in the designs on the bride’s limbs for him to find on the wedding night.

Wedding Attire Grooms are often given the choice to wear either Kurta Pyjama, Sherwani, or formals like a suit, tuxedo, etc., whereas, for brides, it is Salwar Kameez or Sharara. The traditionally designed nose pin and Jhoomar are the emblems of Muslim brides.

During Ijab-e-Qubool, both groom and bride were asked separately their will to marry each other by saying ‘Qubool Hai,’ three times. As decreed by the Quran, Nikah Nama is signed followed by Khutba, wherein the Maulvi recites what we know as marriage vows. Arsi Mushraf A mirror is placed between the newly-wed along with the Holy Quran. Everyone is tickled pink when the groom and bride lay eyes on each other for the first time in their reflection.
