Edito r’s View Dear Readers, It is always said that “Marriages are made in heaven, but only the reception takes place here on Earth.” It is a cliche we all know. But when you seriously think about it, there may be some truth behind it. I definitely believe strongly. Over the last 10 years, we have published several real wedding stories in the Desh-Videsh wedding issue. When I read the newlyweds’ answers to the question “How did you meet,” my feelings about this cliche become even stronger. Some of you may know how Aruna and I met, but let me share for those who do not know. After I received my engineering degree from M S University, I was all set to come to the US as a single man on a student visa. My mother was not happy since I was going to the US without getting married. But I convinced her by telling her that I will be back in two years to get married. But a heavenly power had some other ideas for me. In those old days, we had to take a medical exam before we apply for the US visa. So I went for exam, and guess what I failed. I had some tropical weather germs in my stomach. So I had to take three weeks medical treatment with a doctor approved by the US embassy. After three weeks I went for medical exam and I passed and got my visa. Unfortunately my admission to the US was cancelled. So I had to start my admission process all over again for the next semester, which meant I had to wait six months, giving my mother good reason to plan my marriage. Meanwhile by pure coincidence Aruna was visiting India from Nairobi and it just happened that my father’s good friend was Aruna’s uncle. I am sure you can guess the rest of the story. So after reading this, wouldn’t you agree that our “jodi” was decided in heaven? Enough about me - let me come back to our wedding issue, the most popular of the year. In this issue, we present real weddings and wedding planning tips. Whether you are the bride or groom, planning a wedding for your loved ones, or gearing up to attend your friend or your close relative’s wedding, you will find this issue very informative. As usual, we received quite a few real wedding submissions, and we thank each of them for sharing their stories. Unfortunately, we can not publish all of them. This issue, we are excited to share two beautiful Muslim weddings. Often, when we ask Muslim brides and grooms to submit their weddings, the bride is too shy to submit. On behalf the entire Desh-Videsh team, I would like to thank these two families for sharing their story. I hope you enjoy these and the rest of the stories. No Desh-Videsh wedding issue is complete without a Bollywood wedding, and this issue, we present one of the biggest Bollywood weddings that has been in the news since over the last few months - Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. And last but not definitely not least, we are announcing the first of our 2019 MyShadi Bridal Expos. As announced before, we plan to add two to three new cities to our ever growing list of cities where we host our these bridal shows. On March 31, 2019, we will host MyShadi Bridal Expo in Raleigh, North Carolina. Look for details in this issue, and please help us spread the word. We will announce dates for MyShadi Bridal Expos in Atlanta and Orlando soon. We look forward to seeing you at these shows! Raj Shah Managing Editor

n October 2018, Shisha Patel, a health educator and Indian medical program coordinator, and Dishant Patel, a project manager, held their
wedding and reception at the Adriatic Lounge and the Arctic Club, respectively, on the Carnival Victory ship of the Carnival Cruise Line.
The bride and groom became acquainted on Facebook and, after a month of phone exchanges, met at the Thai Lanna restaurant in Somerset, New Jersey. They got along well from the start and dated for two years before Dishant sprung a romantic proposal at Disney Park, Orlando, in January 2017. Urged by her parents to join them for a family vacation at the park, Shisha received the surprise of her life when, on a boat ride on the lake, Dishant showed up and proposed on one knee. His original plan to propose in a hot-air balloon ride did not work out due to windy weather, but he made up for that with a helicopter ride the following day and proposed anew. The couple planned their wedding on their own for a year and a half. With their hearts set

They picked Carnival Cruise Lines, who have, so far, hosted fewer than five Indian weddings. Despite the exotic locales their cruise ship docked at a private island, Half Moon Cay, and at Nassau, Bahamas - the wedding itself followed traditional Gujarati Vidhi, with acrylic Rangolis and hand-decorated, water-filled baskets with floating

Thinking back on the experience, the young couple thinks that planning their own wedding, without involving wedding planners, was the best thing they could have done. They, however, do admit to being stressed out from the wedding planning and preparations. One thing they hadn’t bargained for was a choppy sea. Watching their happy guests teeter unsteadily on the ship deck, they say, was an amusing experience.

hen Waqas Memon first saw Mariam Kiran Mirza at a local mosque, the attraction was instant. He knew he had to find some way to meet her and get to know her better. When he saw her again at a mall, he asked for her help in finding a birthday present for his cousin. Whether they found that present or not is not clear, but after spending an entire day together, they did find something better – love! Six months later, Mariam and Waqas were engaged. One and a half years later, they married in Boca Raton, Florida. Mariam and Waqas had a four-day wedding celebration that included a sangeet, baraat, Nikkah, and Valima. Rather than hiring a wedding planner, the couple decided to take care of things themselves. While Wagas took care of the vendor selection, Mariam handled the decoration details. Waqas interviewed 30 different photographers and videographers, and 16 different cake bakers before selecting the best vendors for their wedding.

Wagus and Mariam’s Valima (reception) was held at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Coral Springs Hotel Golf Club & Convention Center. During the Sangeet ceremony, there were several special performances from the groom’s side. Even Mariam and Waqas surprised their guests with a special dance performance. For the reception, the couple chose a playlist complete with just Bollywood tracks; apart from their first dance song, which was “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. When discussing the most memorable ‘wow’ moment from their wedding, the Waqas shared a very special memory. “When I first saw her (Mariam) dressed up on our Baraat day, I couldn’t believe I was going to marry the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen,” he said.

Khilna and Sunny met through mutual friends, and after a while realized that their bond was much more than just friendship. After spending some time together, they knew they wanted to be with each other forever. With a surprise proposal that involved their closest friends, view of the city skyline and a hidden camera, Sunny sealed the deal.
On August 18, 2018, the couple tied the knot at the The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North, in Atlanta, Georgia. They planned the entire wedding themselves, with Sunny’s close friend Beena Patel playing an essential role. Beena was a huge help to Khilna and Sunny as they went about shortlisting and managing vendors, themes, timelines and all details. Khilna and Sunny chose to host a daytime wedding, with traditional red and gold colors as the theme. The mandap’s base was covered in flowers, while the aisle was decorated with elephant statues, flowers, and candles in water vases. Sunny made his way to the venue in a Lamborghini Huracan Spyder, and Khilna entered the ceremony in a doli.

Christena clearly remembers the morning when social media played cupid in her love story. Ask any bride how and when she met her groom, and she will remember it as clearly as it happened just yesterday. And so the story goes with Christena Singh. A teacher from Miami, Christ e na c l ea rly re me m b e r s t h e m o r n i n g w h e n s o c i a l m ed i a played cupid in her love story. “It all began one early morning in September 2016, around 7:15am with an Instagram “good morning” message! Yep! You read right! Instagram!” she recollects her first exchange with Ravi, her groom. With Christena in Florida and Ravi in Queens, NY, technology played a huge role in this love story. With hours of phone calls, Facetimes, and back and forth f lig hts, their beautiful bond grew. In 2018, they made their commitment off icial by getting married. In quite the romantic story, Ravi proposed to Christena by involving her best friends and parents. W hile unsuspecting Christena was out for dinner with her friends, Ravi decorated her entire house with rose petals. Reliving the night Christena said, “As I unlocked the front door I saw HUNDREDS of rose petals placed throughout the whole house. My neighbor stood in front of me with her video camera and I instantly

Once I walked around to the garage, Ravi stood on one knee in a heart of rose petals asking me to marry him!” That was October 27, 2017. And, on July 14, 2018, the loving couple got married in Orlando Marriott Lake Mary, Florida, in a Hindu wedding ceremony.

Choosing a perfect first dance song can be a daunting task for some couples. As this will be the first time you and your better half will be matching steps in front of your guests as a married couple, pick a song that makes the moment even more memorable. Here are three simple steps to help you and your partner find the perfect song for your first dance:
1
Find your common interest
Whether it is Bollywood, Hollywood or even Latin or French,
How to Choose the Perfect Song for Your First Dance
make a decision together based on your common interests. Also, think about the genre and the pace of the song. What is it that you both like, classic or something modern and fresh!
2
Tell your story
Choose a song where the lyrics speak about your bond. Was it love at first sight or a classic tale of high school sweethearts? Or was it a long-distance relationship or a friendship that grew into love? Find a song that tells your story.
3
Pick something sentimental
Some couples have a song that played a significant part in their relationship. It can be either their first date song, one that was playing during their proposal, or a song that they listen to when they are away from each other. Shuffle through your playlists and memory to see if there is a song like that and go for it. Remember, your first dance song selection is as important as your wedding outfit or the menu. So, make the best of it!

ou never know how you meet your special someone and find your happily ever after! For our lovely couple, Leila Youssef and Fraz Rizvi, it was the bride’s brother who played the cupid between the two. You never know how you meet your special someone and find your happily ever after! For our lovely couple, Leila Youssef and Fraz Rizvi, it was the bride’s brother who played the cupid between the two. The couple chose the Sheraton Hotel in Connecticut as their wedding venue. Leila, who had earlier helped many of her friends plan their weddings, planned the entire wedding herself. She knew from the start how she wanted her wedding to be. One of the beautiful DIY details that Leila added to the reception
was the centerpieces that she made herself. She made fresh flower bouquet, surrounded by candles and with flower petals sprinkled all over the table. As the couple and their families wanted a traditional wedding ceremony, they chose melodious Nasheed music for the baarat and the ceremony.
One beautiful DIY detail Leila added to the reception was the fresh floral centerpiece she made herself.

The most memorable part of their reception was a surprise game that was organized by the bride’s friends. The couple was made to sit in chairs with their backs to each other. They were then asked to take their one shoe off and give it to the other so that both of them were holding on bride shoe and one groom shoe. After that, their friends asked them some fun questions like who said I love you first, who is a better driver, who takes longer to get ready, and so on. And, the bride and groom had to hold up the shoe corresponding to their answer. As the two were sitting back-to-back, they had no clue of each other’s answers, which gave their guests a lot of enjoyable and laughter-filled moments. Leila and Fraz’s beautiful journey from meeting to their wedding can be summed up by the quote from ‘When Harry Met Sally’- “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

Fashion Guide: How to Perfectly Coordinate the Bride & Groom Wedding Dress
F
or some couples, the idea of coordinated outfits can be taken seriously to mean wearing the exact same color clothing. However, there are many tasteful and chic ways in which a couple can coordinate their wedding look. Here are five smart ways the bride and the groom can complement each other in perfectly coordinated outfits.
1
Same Color But Different Hue
If you both want to wear the same color, then go for different shades. If the bride is going for a bright red outfit, then the groom can go for a dark red or maroon shade.

Contrasting Colors
Wearing the same color is not the only way to look coordinated. After all, opposites attract! Pick contrasting colors that go hand-in-hand, like blue and red, green and yellow, pink and blue, purple and green, etc.
3
Multi-colored Riot

If the bride chooses to wear a multi-colored outfit, the groom can pick one of the colors from it to complete his look. If the bride’s dress includes three distinct colors, the groom could pick the color that is least visible for his outfit.
4
Minimalistic Matching
If you don’t want to look too “matched” at your wedding, then consider using similar colors for accessories. The groom may choose to use the bride’s outfit color for his pocket-square, safa/dupatta or pagdi.
5
Match The Fabric
Just matching the colors is not the only way to look coordinated; you can even go for wedding attires in the same outfit. If you have a winter wedding, go for fabrics like Velvet or Silk that not only stand out but also have a good sheen. For a summer wedding, you can choose tulle or silk-organza.

You are made for each other; so let your wedding outfits show the same as well!
