National Party promises to change

laws for carrying Kirpan ¡¡ SANDEEP SINGH

T

he National Party is promising to change laws for carrying Kirpans if elected back to power after the elections on September 23.

The announcement came from none other than Prime Minister Bill English in a party event in support of the election campaign of the KiwiIndian MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi from Manukau East electorate in South Auckland on Friday, August 5.

“If re-elected, a National-led Government will amend the Crimes Act to exempt Sikhs from carrying a Kirpan for religious reasons from being considered to be in possession of an offensive weapon,” Mr English said.

The proposed amendment does not change the Civil Aviation Rules governing what may be carried on board a domestic flight, and decisions around prohibited items remain questions for the Civil Aviation Authority.

This was certainly a welcome announcement for the Sikh community, which had often found itself at the centre of slightly negative attention than what community sincerely aspires for, around its articles of faith.

Kirpan – a ceremonial knife, one of the five articles of faith for

baptised Sikhs, has long remained in the public discourse in New Zealand, gaining attention intermittently, often causing anxieties within the community.

“This is a welcome announcement for the Sikh community, and will ensure that the Sikh faith is protected under the New Zealand law,” Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi said welcoming the announcement.

“I have long advocated for the Sikh community, and I currently have a members' bill in the ballot which would allow baptised Sikhs to carry Kirpans in public and work places,” Mr Bakshi added.

Speaking to The Indian Weekender Prithipal Singh Basra of Kolmar Road Gurudwara in Papatoetoe dedicated the outcome to the consistent lobbying by all Gurudwaras and the members of the Sikh community.

“This is certainly great news and result of concerted efforts of all Gurudwaras and the community.

“Our community has been longing for this for a long time and lobbying with the government,” Mr Basra said.

Sharing similar sentiments Satinder Singh Chouhan, the head of the committee managing New Lynn Gurudwara in Auckland also concurred that the community had been collectively lobbying for this demand for a long time.

Speaking to The Indian Weekender Mr Chouhan said, “I think that the government would have taken into consideration the fact that Sikhs have never used Kirpan to attack anyone.

“In Sikhism, Kirpans are only to be used in self-defence or to defend someone in need against any repression,” Mr Chouhan further added.

Mr Bakshi, the first Sikh Member of Parliament in New Zealand, has long been seeking legislation around ceremonial daggers, so it’s clear they are not weapons and are safe to be worn and had placed a member’s bill – the Kirpan Authorisation

Bill – which is currently on the members’ bills ballot list, waiting to be introduced.

Election promise or genuine concern?

However, this is not the first time that the National Party had made promises around the emotive issue of Sikh Kirpans.

Earlier in 2015, Stuff.co.nz reported that the then Prime Minister Sir John Key had also said publically about the loosening of the rules around Kirpans at a meeting at the Takanini Gurdwara in Auckland.

Takanini Gurdwara, Mr Key had then said: “There’s a process they’d have to go through, and I’ve said to them I’m not unsympathetic, and we should look at it.

“My understanding is the Kirpan, for the most part, is a very small, blunt instrument. If you want to make the case that someone could cause harm with that – they’re probably much more likely to cause harm with anything else you can get at the grounds.

“A wine bottle from Koru Club would pose just as much risk when boarding a plane as a Kirpan,” Sir John Key had then said.

Earlier in 2015, Stuff.co.nz reported that the then Prime Minister Sir John Key had also said publically about the loosening of the rules around Kirpans at a meeting at the Takanini Gurdwara in Auckland Speaking to The Indian Weekender, Daljit Singh of Supreme Sikh Council said, “We appreciate Prime Minister Bill English taking up this issue again just before elections, however, this is not the first time that the National Party is promising a favourable intervention on the issue of Kirpans.

“The community had long been looking forward to every political party for a favourable intervention to not only allow Kirpan but also Turban and Kada, the two other articles of faith which affect Sikh community’s experience in public life in New Zealand.

“Following that statement, the Sikh community had been able to gain support from all other major political parties including Labour, Green and Act Party,” Mr Singh said.

“We have been requesting the government to choose from two options.

“However, Mr Bakshi had introduced a member’s bill which stopped the government somehow from bringing a government bill supported by all other parties,” Mr Singh added.

“The government could also have enunciated an amendment in existing laws to allow members of the Sikh community, which has been in the country since last hundred years, to exercise their faith.” Mr Singh said.

An amendment to the existing law for accommodating Sikh cultural practices is not completely unprecedented in New Zealand, as previously there has been a favourable amendment in the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 allowing Sikhs to drive Motorcycles without requiring a helmet.

A person is not in breach of sub clause (1) if the person proves that at the time of the commission of the alleged breach he or she was an adherent of the Sikh region – reads the amended Sub clause 7.12 Safety helmets for all terrain vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds.

It is important to note that many commonwealth countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and some states of Australia have already legislated allowing members of the Sikh community to carry Kirpan in public spaces.

The two ministers in Canada, Harjit Singh Sajjan and Navdeep Singh Bains are both baptised Sikhs, carrying Kirpans.

Gurudwara offers land for a healthy community initiative ¡¡ RIZWAN MOHAMMAD

or a resident in the South Auckland, the free food service (langar) at the Takanini Gurudwara is no new news. Every week more than 3000 members of the community take the langar service at the Shri Kalgidhar Sahib Gurudwara at Takanini School Road.

In a collaborative initiative

by Healthy Families Manukau, Manurewa-Papakura and Old School Teaching Gardens, the garden of the Gurudwara has started sowing new plantations on Friday, August 4 that will enable growing fresh vegetables and fruits for the community.

This community garden initiative will enable the temple to engage the volunteers and the local community in growing fresh garden fruits to be served at the gurudwara and given back to the larger community.

The much-anticipated event on Friday witnessed the plantation by Minister for Ethnic Communities Judith Collins, Minister of Defence Mark Mitchell, National List MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and later Prime Minister Bill English also joined the event.

The temple will plant up to 400 fruit trees such as lemons, orange, guava, lime, nuts and vegetables that will be used by the community.

“The volunteers at the Gurudwara come from a farming background, but it will be good for them to do plantation in the local climate and soil conditions,” spokesperson for the Supreme Sikh Society New Zealand (SSSNZ), Daljit Singh said.

The grounds of the Takanini Gurudwara are already being used for community’s sports and cultural events and have walking tracks too, and this new initiative of selfgrowing garden fruits and vegetables will help the community.

The idea is to produce enough fruits and vegetables to be used by the gurudwara that serves thousands of community members thrice a day, 365 days a week. The produce grown can also be given to the homeless

and the hungry, and there will be ample seeds left to be given to local community members to use in their backyards and gardens.

Alliance Community Initiative Trust chief executive Rachel Enosa, who runs Healthy Families Manukau, Manurewa-Papakura, says that the project will help develop sustainable food production.

The Takanini Gurudwara is the biggest Sikh Temple in New Zealand and is managed under Supreme Sikh Society of New Zealand. The parent body has also started a youth wing earlier in July to get the young SikhKiwis get more involved with their religion and culture.

ndia New Zealand Business Council (INZBC) – the premier trade organisation in New Zealand working for over 25 years to build trade relations between India and New Zealand –brought together key stakeholders within the education sector in India and New Zealand in the recently held summit – Edutech 2017 in Auckland.

The summit witnessed high political commitment from the New Zealand side including Prime Minister Bill English; Minister for Trade, Todd McClay; Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, Paul Goldsmith and Minister for Commerce & Small Business, Jacqui Dean.

The Labour Party was represented by Michael Wood, as spokesperson for Ethnic Communities.

The Indian side comprised a high level inward delegation of key stakeholders in the education sector including heads of many educational institutions and industry leaders like Mohandas Pai, the former founder-CFO of India’s Information Technology (IT) global giant Infosys and the current Chairman of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Skills Committee andChairman of one of India’s largest education conglomerates, the Manipal Global Education.

The key body on the Indian side complementing INZBC in New Zealand was FICCI – an apex Indian trade body.

The summit was planned late last year during the Prime Ministerial visit of Sir John Key to India.

The Minister of Trade, Todd McClay, acknowledged the importance of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both the countries and committed to continue the talks if returned to form the government after the elections.

The minister said that he was hopeful of meeting the Commerce Minister of India if elected back, to take the negotiations forward.

The minister also said that special attention would be giving to the services sector and the education industry, so that they also get benefits out of the FTA, suggesting this government’s increasing resolve to accommodate India’s genuine interests that are supposedly delaying the progress of talks. New Zealand should look at India for opportunities

Indian guru inspires Kiwi runner

to achieve marathon record ¡¡ IWK BUREAU

O

ne of India’s luminaries and notable peace advocates, the late Sri Chinmoy, was an inspiration behind a remarkable record setting sporting feat that concluded in New York City on Tuesday, August 8.

Harita Davies, a member of Auckland’s Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, made history by becoming the first ever Kiwi woman to attempt and finish the longest certified footrace in history, a 3,100mile race described by the New York Times as “The Mount Everest of Ultramarathons.”

Running around a one km loop in a leafy NY suburb, Harita finished the gruelling ultra in 51 days, 12 hours and 48 minutes, setting a new and first New Zealand woman’s record for that distance. She beats the previous record time by half a day, set by the only other Kiwi, a man, who ran in this race.

She then ran another 18 laps to reach the 5,000km mark, a distance greater than any New Zealander has run before, becoming the first Kiwi woman ever to attempt and finish the event, post the fastest time ever, and set a record for 5,000km.

Harita, aged 42 years, averaged 60.16 miles or 96.82 kilometers every day for 52 consecutive days, was 4th overall and one of three women out of five competitors to reach the 52 day cut off time, circling around the city block in New York during the heat, humidity and occasional thunderstorms of the East coast summer.

Historic Onam celebration at parliament ¡¡ RIZWAN MOHAMMAD

A

uckland Malayali Samajam hosted the Onam celebrations in the parliament on Thursday, August 3, with representatives from Malayali community organisations from all over New Zealand attending the historic event.

It was the first time in the history of the world that Onam has been celebrated in any parliament outside India.

To mark this historic event, a commemorative stamp was released at the celebrations. The stamp was designed by an executive member of the Auckland Malayali Samajam (AMS) Shine Balakrishnan. The stamp was unveiled by Minister for Ethnic Communities Judith Collins, National List MP Kanwaljit Bakshi, High Commission of India Second Secretary & HOC Sandeep Sood and other ambassadors along with President of AMS Benny Jacob, and the executive community members.

More than 100 selected members of the Malayali community organisations from all over New Zealand attended the event besides members of parliament.

The event commenced with a presentation on the history and significance of Onam celebrations for the community followed by cultural performances by different organisations.

AMS performers made floral rangoli called Athappookkalam, a performance called Maveli that indicated the role of Maveli or King during Onam celebrations and Mohiniyattam, a traditional Kerala dance.

Another traditional Kerala dance by Wellington Malayali Association called Thiruvathirakali and a traditional drum show called Chendamelam by Palmerston North Malayali Association were also performed.

“The message of this celebration is that Onam unites all those speakers of Malayalam language and everyone is made proud of their culture and festival,” Mr Jacob told the Indian Weekender.

This year the community Onam celebrations, Ponnonam-2017 will be held on Saturday, September 2, at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Eden Terrace.

Auckland Malayali Samajam was established with the aim of bringing together all the Malayalis of Auckland to foster contacts, friendship and understanding to the extent possible for the well being of the Malayali community as well as that of the New Zealand society.

he seemingly uninterested non-voters and the youths, the Labour Party and above all the media are going gaga over the exuberance accompanied with this Jacinda mania.

The rise of Ms Ardern as Labour leader is being seen as a stepping-stone for her becoming the youngest Prime Minister of the country since 1856.

About a week and a half ago, Jacinda Ardern was swiftly elevated as the leader of the Labour Party as its last hope in a manner described as “bloodless coup” by Duncan Garner of the

Since then Jacinda mania has swept across the nation, particularly the media, including this media outlet as well.

While the mainstream media is busy in predicting possible fallouts of Jacinda’s momentous rise in New Zealand politics, which is largely indicating a scramble of votes on the left. The question that may have escaped the attention of the mainstream media, and rightly though, is a question that ethnic communities in New Zealand might be tempted to ask - “what is in it for me?” - in this Jacinda mania.

In fact, the ethnic community might also struggle to fully comprehend the excitement around Jacinda’s rise in New Zealand politics, apart from the obvious X-factor. Stuff’s political editor Wayne Perkins asserts that Ms Ardern has the X-factor, and so do many other commentators.

Therefore, The Indian Weekender is compelled to take a ringside view of the Jacinda mania from the perspective of the KiwiIndian community, and by logic, wider ethnic communities in New Zealand, who are also in most cases fall into the category called as ‘new’ migrants.

From the mainstream media’s perspective, it is fashionable and completely reasonable to expect voters are camping in ‘left’ or ‘right-ofcentre’ politics.

However, it is neither convenient nor desirable to view ethnic communities, KiwiIndian community in this case, as broadly subscribing to ‘left or right-wing’ politics.

To a large extent, it is safe to argue that these communities carry their votes from party to party and leader to leader every election to whom they identify as ‘warming up’ to them and responding to their pressing needs of the day.

It is not because of any perceived inability to associate or commit to any ideology or ‘progressive politics’ as some experts might hurriedly conclude.

Currently, India – that many in Kiwi-Indian community consider as their original home – is taking giant strides in its fight against climate change and cutting down green house emissions

by leap-frogging into adapting clean-green technologies, which clearly indicates that the people of Indian descent are not plagued by any systematic aversion to ‘progressive ideas’.

It is only that the adherents of the so called progressive ideas have not engaged effectively with the KiwiIndian community.

The nomadic electoral behaviour of these communities is primarily rooted in the fact of them being ‘new’ migrants in this country and the new social settings around them.

While their commitment to ideologies based on their old social settings in the original home may be getting gradually weakened, the connection with political ideologies in their chosen new home – New Zealand – may not have fully evolved, if at all.

It is just this fact that makes political parties difficult to maintain the ‘connect’ with the ethnic communities, which are largely new migrants, purely on the basis of ideologies and progressive ideas.

In that regard, new migrants do not neatly fall into political demarcation of voters as social democrats, urban middle class, working class, socialliberals, or for that matter socially conservatism or green activism.

However, it is not to suggest that this in any way dis-incentivises them unreasonably to participate in the political process of the country.

A working class ethnic migrant’s or an urban middle-class ethnic migrant’s political leaning might be tempered by many other things beyond the scope of leftwing politics.

Jacinda’s rise and scramble for left votes

I

n the first two weeks after elevation as the leader of the Labour Party, Jacinda Ardern has demonstrated a propensity, and rightly so, of reaching out specifically to the so called left wing voters which many believe have drifted further left toward the Green Party.

The two major policy announcements so far, one about Auckland’s public transport and the other about clean rivers and New Zealand’s environment, apart from other key political messaging such as ruling out Green Party Co-Leader Metiria Turei from a cabinet position in any future Labour led government has been targeted to scramble for left wing voters.

There is nothing wrong in itself as these prospective voters form Labour’s core constituency and it was largely expected.

What was also largely expected was media’s exuberance on reporting about Jacinda’s policy launch, notably the announcement of bringing forward Auckland light-rail from CBD to the airport on Sunday, August 6. The media has noted everything relentlessly positive about that event.

Whereas media reporting of National Party’s hurriedly arranged policy announcement couple of hours later on the same day in South Auckland, on heavy rail and public transport, by Prime Minister Bill English and a battery of ministers and parliamentarians received flak for being cold and snobby, as should be expected from any third successive term government.

Once again, nothing completely

unusual about this, as it is more a matter of prerogative and choices, which can differ just like Labour’s and National’s choices about motorways and rail as proposed solutions for Auckland’s public transport woes.

However, what was notable was the difference in commitment, or perceived commitment, toward the new migrants.

What is in it for ethnic communities?

W

hile Labour’s public transport policy announcement had visible representation from MPs from central Auckland, inner suburbs, and constituencies as far as Manukau East and Mangere in South Auckland, which largely presented faces from Pakeha, Pacifica and Maori communities – any prominent new migrant ethnic community faces were conspicuously absent.

In contrast, the National Party event which received media flak had more visible representation from the KiwiIndian and Chinese communities – a fact largely missed in all mainstream media commentaries about the two events.

This is not permanent and can certainly change in future but at least for now, it provides an answer to the question passing through minds of new ethnic migrants – what’s in it for me?

This when compared with the fact that we are very much into the second week out of the total available seven weeks after Jacinda’s anointment as the new leader of the Labour Party, which roughly corresponds to 25 per cent of the total available time before the election, there has not been any major policy announcement or outreach to the new migrants in New Zealand.

The issues that affect these communities majorly – such as immigration and law and order has largely escaped Jacinda Ardern led leadership team’s attention.

Given the fact that these ethnic communities roughly comprise about 15 per cent of the total population, which if catered appropriately, could have a decisive impact in this election.

In this regard, it will be interesting to see how the Jacinda Ardern-led newly rejuvenated Labour Party chooses to engage with new migrant ethnic communities.

Ever since Ms Ardern has taken the charge of the Party, there has been a desire to win back the traditional “left-wing” voters, which have drifted towards the Green Party.

Ms Ardern’s first move as leader was to ditch the party’s old campaign slogan of ‘A fresh approach’, replacing it with ‘Let’s do this’.

Personality or policies: What will decide Kiwi-Indian votes? ¡¡ SANDEEP SINGH

T

he debate whether this election would be eventually fought on the basis of ‘personality’ or ‘policies’ has become relevant more than ever before.

This question, which seemed to be at the periphery of the country’s political debate just a week ago, has been jettisoned to the centre of the political debate after the latest Newshub-Reid Research polls released Wednesday night.

There seems to be no iota of doubt that Jacinda Ardern has swept the nation by storm as Labour surged by a whopping nine per cent from the previous low of 23.3 per cent to a high of 33 per cent.

The Green Party has received considerable flak losing about 4 per cent, bringing them down from the coveted position of being the third largest party in New Zealand politics to trail behind their nemesis, New Zealand First.

Surely, this upheaval has not happened on the basis of any major policy announcement alone in the last two weeks, accentuating the question of the debate if this election is being fought on the basis of ‘policies’ or just personalities.

However, this has not changed the country’s bigger political picture at all except strengthening Winston

Peters’ kingmaker position, which is again a reflection of personality over policy.

Raising any debate on this question would be amusing to the ears of the National Party, which has already upped the ante that this election should be fought on the basis of policies and not mere personality.

Led by Prime Minister Bill English and the key party-strategist Steven Joyce and other leaders in the current ruling coalition like ACT Party’s David Seymour has been making loud noises that this election, and for that matter any election, should not be about personalities.

Coming from a side that has stuck to power for the last three consecutive terms riding high on Sir John Key’s

personality, this argument does not hold much ground.

Labour on the other side, and even the Green Party, fresh from the wounds of losing their long tested co-leader Metiria Turei, who was forced to resign from her position, is understandably trying to underplay the role of personalities in this election.

This is after the Green Party had chosen to stand by steadfastly behind their co-leader who shocked the nation by voluntarily disclosing her benefit fraud of a quarter of a century ago, and summary dismissal of two fellow Green MPs who dared to criticise the co-leader.

Was it a question of personality or was there any policy on display?

The question is surely being debated on the national political scene.

It will be interesting to see what the Kiwi-Indian community has to say on this important question that has gripped the country – are elections about personality or policies?

The Indian Weekender reached out to few members of the community and some prominent community leaders to feel the pulse of the KiwiIndian Community.

“My vote is for Labour, and it has definitely changed after Jacinda,” said a young mum at Sandringham shops, who had no qualms in accepting that she is under the spell of Jacinda-mania.

However, not everyone in the community was as open and willing to give away as this young mum.

“I can feel the exuberance around Jacinda’s rise as the new Labour Leader, but I am still keen to hear what does she has to say on immigration policy,” said one shopper at Lotus Supermarket in Mt Roskill.

“Labour Party had been making a lot of noise around how record immigration numbers were not welcome in New Zealand anymore, and we would like to hear what their new leadership team has to say,” said another shopper who chose not to give away anything before the actual election day.

Similarly, the opinion was divided among community leaders and the key influencers within the community about what they thought would be decisive in this election – personality or politics.

Bhiku Bhana, President of New Zealand Indian Central Association, was apt in his opinion that Jacinda’s elevation as new Labour Leader would create “interest” among young voters in the community.

However, Mr Bhana chose not to comment on the actual impact on the choices of the voters.

Similarly, Veer Khar, the former President of Indian Association of New Zealand (erstwhile Manukau Indian Association) was affirmative about the relentless positivity brought in by Jacinda’s elevation as Labour Leader.

Purushottam Govind, President of Auckland Indian Association, thought otherwise and asserted that Jacinda’s elevation would have no impact whatsoever on the KiwiIndian voters.

In this regard, The Indian Weekender is carrying a direct comment from two key Kiwi-Indian political leaders contesting this election Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and Priyanca Radhakrishnan on the question what will matter most in this election – personality or policies.

The Waterview tunnel opened recently, delivering massive time savings to Aucklanders travelling between the west and south of Auckland and also between the airport and the city.

We’re also making a significant number of transport investments across all modes. These include the EastWest Link, the new motorway linking the Southwestern Motorway with the Southern Motorway; electrifying the commuter railway line between Papakura and Pukekohe; and our intention to construct the third main line. Of course, there is also the Northern Motorway corridor between Constellation Drive and Albany, and the extension of the busway. The Government, in partnership with Auckland Council, is considering further investments in areas like the Mill Road corridor and the Northwestern Motorway busway as part of a comprehensive plan to unlock land for housing development projects around the city.

Our continued investment in business, in trade, in infrastructure, and in innovation will help keep New Zealand on the productive and prosperous path it is on today. It will help us deliver more jobs and higher wages for Kiwis, while also ensuring New Zealand families are supported by the public services that matter to them.

Taxi driver abducted, assaulted in Wellington

W

ellington Police have arrested a 24-year-old Auckland man involved in abduction and assault of a taxi driver on Wednesday, August 9.

The police is also speaking with another person believed to be involved in the abduction and assault.

The taxi driver remains in hospital and is recovering from his injuries.

Earlier, on Wednesday morning around 2.30 a.m.,

a male taxi driver parked on Jarden Mile waiting for work was assaulted and placed in the boot of his vehicle.

The victim was let free approximately two hours later in the suburb of Grenada Village and notified Police.

He was taken to Wellington Hospital with serious but not lifethreatening injuries.

The taxi was recovered not far from where the victim was let free.

“Police are working with the victim and have been making a number of enquiries today including carrying out scene examinations and reviewing the camera footage from the taxi,” Detective Sergeant Richard Gibson said.

NZPP offers interest-free home loans for first home buyers ¡¡ RIZWAN MOHAMMAD

O

ne of the most important concerns of new migrants in Auckland is buying their first home and according to New Zealand People’s Party’s housing policy; the party will provide ‘Interest-Free First Home Deposit Loan’ for five years. First home buyers in Auckland will be offered a loan of $100,000 and for people outside Auckland $60,000.

The housing policy was announced by NZPP leader Roshan Nauhria at the Campaign Launch event at Fickling Convention Centre in Three Kings on Sunday, August 6.

The New Zealand People’s Party has promised attention toward three primary concerns of the migrant communities in Auckland which is housing, law and order and immigration.

“If our party becomes a partner in forming the government after the general elections in September, we will make sure that our housing policy is implemented,” Mr Nauhria said.

First home buyers can take the benefit of this interest-free loan for five years, and after that,

they will pay interest at the existing market rate which will be subjected to the discretion of the lending institutions.

This amount will be separate from the accrued KiwiSaver and what the government already provides to the first home buyers.

Mr Nauhria added that the cost of this initiative would be around $150 million per year which will generate benefits to at least 6,000 families every year.

The Party needs 180,000 votes in this September general election to be a part of the next government.

by Jacinda-mania, the good news for the Kiwi-Indian community is that the upsurge in Labour votes will ensure that their representative Priyanca Radhakrishnan is all set to enter parliament.

The Newshub-Reid Research polls, out tonight have signalled a dramatic resurgence of the Labour’s fortune from a poor 23.3 per cent to a robust 33 per cent.

Although this does not envisage a successful change of the government, what it ensures is a certainty of another Kiwi-Indian MP in the parliament, with Priyanca Radhakrishnan being placed at eleventh ranking in the Labour Party list.

Two weeks ago, this was appearing to be a challenging possibility, purely on the basis of the list and the numbers labour was polling.

n an interaction jointly organised by the Cnterbury Nepalese Society (CNS) and Overseas Nepalese Forum, senior leader and former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist - UML), Madhav Kumar Nepal, assured the Nepalese expatriates that their concerns of New Zealand not hosting a Nepalese Embassy will be addressed soon.

“As the numbers of Nepalese shifting to New Zealand is increasing, the need to have our embassy here is rightfully felt.

"I will make sure that the present Nepalese Government is cognizant of your concerns,” Mr Nepal noted in his address. Right now, the Nepalese Embassy in Canberra, Australia, provides all consular services to people living in New Zealand.

Other notable mention in his speech was the issue of dual citizenship.

While the new Nepalese constitution has incorporated provisions of allowing dual citizenship to overseas Nepalese, it is yet to be implemented.

On this, Bishnu Pokhrel, President of CNS, said, “We discussed with the leader our desire to get the dual citizenship provisions implemented as soon as possible.

"Making remittance easier and encouraging investments in Nepal by overseas Nepalese by reducing barriers was also put to him. He kindly agreed to look into these concerns as well.”

Nepal is currently governed by the political coalition of United Democratic Madhesi Front, and Mr Madhav Kumar’s UML sits in the opposition.

Mayuram – an evening of Indian classical dance

ma Varma, who runs the dance school, couldn’t have asked for more from her students of various skill-levels and ages, at Revathi Performing Arts’ annual dance recital called Mayuram held in Christchurch on August 5.

There were ten performances in all, demonstrating the scintillating Indian classical dance form, which is full of vigorous footwork, fast rhythmic body movements and graceful sculptural poses.

But the highlights of the evening were the Varnam and Thillana performances.

“Varnam was our centre piece as it tests the physical and technical skills of the dancers. It comprises of Jathis – step sequences in varying tempo, pure dance, and Abhinaya – acting and story telling.

The traditional Varnam that our girls performed was recreated after about 30 years. The act was about Shanmukha, who is the leader of heaven’s army, loves to travel on peacock, and is being worshipped by the Nayika – the heroin "It starts very slowly, and then increases in speed towards the end.

Other acts included a Ganesh Stuti – a prayer to Lord Ganesha who removes all obstacles.

It was based on a pure dance form known as Nrutha, where the piece is completed using footwork and associated hand movements only, with facial expressions being minimum.

The evening ended with a Mangalam where the dancers expressed their gratitude and respect to God, Mother Earth and the audiences.

“Our performances were so well-received that my students are already looking forward to the next year’s Mayuram recital.

"We call it this because Mayuram in Sanskrit refers to a peacock. And majority of the dance pieces in our recital used a story, gesture, or movements related to the peacock, making the name meaningful and relevant,” Ms Varma said.

India – the shining light of an increasingly closing world

I

ndia is turning seventy next week on August 15, when it celebrates its independence from the British colonial rule.

This year Indian government is venturing into an uncharted territory of holding celebrations around the world in close connection with India’s global diaspora.

In this endeavour, one of the major attractions will be the simultaneous lighting of iconic buildings around the world in tri colours of Indian flag on August 15.

In New Zealand, the historic building of Auckland Museum will do the laurels of lighting Indian tricolour – a fact noted and duly acknowledged by the members of the Indian community.

This will still be news for a major part of the Kiwi-Indian community that Auckland Museum has graciously agreed to lighten up in tri colour and host a small fun filled gathering on the evening of August 15.

It will certainly be a great opportunity for the community to take time out of their busy schedule on a working day and be a part of the celebration of India’s nationhood.

More than anything, it will be an opportunity to celebrate India’s independence in a setting and atmosphere that will be completely different for many generations of members of KiwiIndian community.

A large part of global Indian diaspora has grown and lived with fond memories of national flag hosting and singing the national anthem, which largely symbolises an old and archaic India.

The contemporary India has evolved and grown into more swanky, hip hop, and everything that goes with the definition of being young and vibrant.

So it might be time to shackle our age old imaginations about India’s Independence Day celebrations.

The “lighting of freedom” event planned at the Auckland Museum on August 15, aims to do exactly that – liberate your imaginations about India and every memory related to India.

It is also a great opportunity to reflect the outer world about changes going within contemporary India.

Achieving statehood is always a moment to cherish and celebration for any nation, and different nations around the world celebrate their national day differently.

In fact, the way different nations chose to celebrate their independence day has something to tell about their journey of being a nation.

To give a better perspective, recently the United States of America had celebrated its two hundred forty-first independence day on July 4. This is abundantly reflected in the manner America celebrates achieving its independence and statehood.

The nation-states which have long attained their statehood and hence believed to be more confident and certitude are seen to move beyond government centric celebrations affirming their respective national identities to a more relaxed fun filled celebratory environment whereby celebrating citizenry of the nation.

This is a complex social process, but there is a degree of veracity and truthfulness which could be verified by many neutral observers.

Regardless of the debate around the manner of Independence Day celebrations, it can be safely submitted that today’s India is a shining light of an increasingly closing world.

Today’s world after Brexit and Trump, where more and more countries are showing a propensity of closing down to everything foreign, be it people, culture, or businesses, India is showing a propensity to reach out and connect with the rest of the world.

This is surely a reflection of India’s growing confidence in its abilities and the abilities of its diasporic communities living around the world, which is more than willing to build synergies back home with India.

This is aptly reflected in the comment of Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand Sanjiv Kohli about the flurry of events planned to celebrate the 70th anniversary of India’s Independence Day. “This Independence Day is also a celebration of being an Indian.

“The pride of representing an ancient civilisation, world’s largest democracy, fastest growing economy and a nation which has contributed so much to maintaining peace and security in various trouble spots around the globe and which has always provided a voice to the hopes and aspirations of the developing countries,” Mr Kohli said.

It is from this reservoir of pride and self-assuredness that the Kiwi-Indian community in New Zealand also draws some strength.

n August 15, India will complete its 70th anniversary of Independence Day – a day when it got freedom from British colonial rule in 1947.

Experts of international relations take this day as the birth of a new Indian state and by that logic, this Independence Day would mark the 70th anniversary of the existence of India as an independent state.

There are many voices within the current and the past ruling political dispensations in India who strongly disagree with the idea that India is merely a 70-year-old state and on the contrary project the idea that India is a civilisational-state with an enviable antiquity and continuity.

However, regardless of this belief running deep within the current political establishment in India, there is no stopping from celebrating India’s 70th anniversary Independence Day with great fervour, pomp and show.

Indeed, this is a day that gives an opportunity to the billion plus citizenry living inside the country to forget perceived differences and celebrate and extol the sense of unity that binds them together and have largely kept them together for the past thousands of years.

Similarly, for millions of Indian diaspora (according to an estimate the size of global Indian diaspora is around 30 million), Independence

Day is an opportunity to cherish Indian cultural heritage that continues to shape their day-to-day lives in their chosen new country of residence. The Indian diaspora has for long been celebrating Indian Independence Day all around the world almost religiously, however, the sense of exuberance and pride has largely been constrained, if not restricted.

And this constrain has been more self-imposed than outwardly imposed.

The host nations where Indian diaspora have chosen to reside, almost unanimously have offered full freedom to them to realise the full potential of their civic life.

For sure, New Zealand has been warmest and welcoming to the Indian diaspora in sharing space in its public life, allowing the Kiwi-Indian community to flourish and realise its full potential.

Apparently, for long this seeming inhibition of the Indian diaspora in celebrating their culture and heritage has been due to the lack of a self-belief and to an extent the perspective of the successive Indian governments toward Indian diaspora, which either lacked the

The Centre has decided to observe this Independence Day as ‘Sankalp Parva’ and asked the people to dedicate themselves to social causes and share their ideas to make a new India.

The 70th Independence Day on August 15 is to be celebrated as the Sankalp Parva, the Ministry of Personnel said in an order.

Terming ‘Quit India Movement’ as an important milestone, the government has asked people to take a pledge to create a new India that is strong, prosperous and inclusive.

The Quit India Movement or ‘August Kranti’ began on August 9, 1942.

“Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, people across India, in every village, city, transcending all barriers came together with a common mission to uproot imperialism,” the order said.

As the nation would be observing 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement this year, five years from now i.e. in August 2022, we will complete 75 years as an independent nation, it

n four decades of covering international badminton, I cannot recall a single instance where an unconsidered player has scalped five seeded players in six rounds, including the ones ranked Nos 1 and 3, to win a singles crown.

That exceptional accolade was conferred on Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu, who, for the second time in three matches, fought tigerishly to save a quartet of match-points and pip the top seed and hot title favourite, Tzu Wei Wang of Chinese Taipei at the tape.

His reward for a 67-minute 11-21, 21-15, 22-20 triumph was the top spot on the rostrum of the US$120,000 prize money New Zealand Open badminton championships, for what was his first-ever international Grand Prix Gold title.

"I share a lot of things with him, and he tells me a lot about bowling as well. He has been seeing me ever since I was a junior cricketer, and he knows what to do and what not to do.

It is very easy to work with him so I am happy to continue to work with him."

One of the challenges the duo of Kuldeep and Arun will have to overcome is the Sri Lanka batsmen's strategy to keep sweeping the spinners. eshawari Naan is believed to have brought to India from Persia in the 1500s; as did the other naan and the addition of dried fruits to it meant that it was favoured by the Mughals in India. With time, as more chefs learnt the fine art and the technique of making naan in tandoors (traditional clay ovens), peshawari naan became popular. It became commercially available only in the later 20th century; and it tastes best when freshly made. Peshawari naan is rich and slightly sweeter than other naans and needs more care while making. Special care is taken to ensure that the dough is not over-fermented and that the nuts don’t burn while baking it.

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • •

2 cups maida (plain white flour) ½ tsp salt, or to taste ½ tsp baking powder 2Tbsp Oil 2Tbsp thick plain yoghurt or Greek youghurt ½cup warm water, as required Melted butter, for brushing the Naan

For Filling • 2 tbsp cashews finely chopped • 2tbsp almonds, finely chopped • 2tbsp pistachios, finely chopped • 2tsp fennel seed, coarsely crushed

METHOD: •

In a bowl, sift together flour, salt and baking powder and mix with your fingers or a wire whisk. Make a well in the centre and add the oil and yoghurt, then the water a little at a time, while slowly mixing together with your fingers to form a smooth, soft dough. Knead well for 8–10 minutes, adding a little flour if the dough is too sticky.

• Place the dough in bowl that has been coated with a layer of oil, cover with a damp tea towel and leave it for 6–8 hours (or overnight) in a warm place to double in size.

• Preheat the grill to its highest setting. Cover a heavy baking sheet with foil and place on the top rack.

• Roll the dough ball on the clean counter, dusted with flour.

• Using a rolling pin, flatten the ball into a 12cm round circle.

• Place about 1 Tbsp of teh crushed nuts and raisins into the centre of the circles. Slowly lift the edges and bring them together in the centre to form a pouch; press the edges together tightly to close.

• Once sealed, press the top down gently with the rolling pin and again roll out into a circle.

• Place the Naan on the hot baking sheet and grill for 1-2 minutes each side or until there are brown spots on the surface.

• Brush the Naan with butter and repeat with remaining Naans. hot with your • Serve favourite curry.

Ruby's Tips: To make peshawari naan in an easy way: Spread a little butter, sprinkle the fennel seeds and some crushed nuts mixture on top of the naan, slightly press the nuts with your finger, before placing the naan on the pre-heated baking sheet.

oilet: Ek Prem Katha actor Akshay Kumar, who took on the unveiling of 24 toilets over 24 hours on Instagram, says his aim is to spread a wave of positive conversation about sanitation across the country.

He believes that toilet is a taboo subject, but he wants people need to realise that it is a crucial part of everyday life.

Akshay began unveiling images of 24 toilets across smaller villages in Jaipur, Delhi, Rewri, Mohali, Karnal, Panipat, Kota, Yamuna Nagar, Narnaul and Gurugram, on social media via Instagram, read a statement from Viacom18 Motion Pictures. ollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Saturday said Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the film industry will be beneficial for the consumers in the long run, adding it a unform tax will aid business too.

“With 28 percent now, I think there is uniformity. Finally the benefit will come back to the consumer... maybe not right now the way GST works. It will be returned back to the consumer not directly but indirectly,” Shah Rukh told reporters while promoting his movie Jab Harry Met Sejal.

“Previously, it was different for different states. In some states it was more, in some it was less. So it used to affect all over the country. I think this is a very good thing that we have a uniform tax now. It will help in business in the

long run. “In the next few years we will settle down to it,” Shah Rukh added.

The GST Council has decided on a two-slab structure for cinema tickets, whereby those costing less than Rs 100 would be taxed less at 18 per cent, while those above will attract tax of 28 per cent.

er initial years in Bollywood saw her playing the bubbly girl in films, but actor Anushka Sharma has said she has now moved on in her career and needs characters beyond the “extrovert kind of roles”.

The 29-year-old actor, who made her Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, said, “I remember there was a time in my life when I did a lot of these extrovert kind of roles. But there was this phase when I got really... Maybe because I was changing as a person, I realised I could not relate to these things anymore.”

The actor said this change confused people around her, who felt she had suddenly become a different person.

“There were people around me, who had perhaps known me for a while like friends, industry people and journalists, they felt that there was something wrong with me. That suddenly I was different. But that’s the natural progression that you go through.”

The actor, who has emerged as one of the top female stars in Bollywood within a short span of time, has teamed up with Shah Rukh for the third time with Jab Harry Met Sejal, a romance drama by director Imtiaz Ali. The actor said while the pragmatic outlook of her character may appear like her real-life persona, Sejal was quite dissimilar to her and it took her a while to understand and approach the part.

“Imtiaz and Shah Rukh have also said that Sejal, according to them, is similar to me but a lot of times we associate a screen image that an actor has to his or her own personality.

"How we diversify these roles is very simple – the girl is either bubbly or she is serious. But this extrovert persona carries a lot of other personalities. I think Sejal and I are quite dissimilar.”

Talking about Imtiaz’s films, Anushka said she likes his approach towards women and his ability to take the usual and create something
