Spelling Bee champ is Indian American again! NEW YORK: Eighth grader Anamika Veermani of North Royalton, Ohio became the 83rd Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee Champion and the 10th Indian American teenager since 1985 to win the increasingly popular championship. On June 4, at the Grand Hyatt in Washington DC, the venue for the championship, Veermani remained expressionless through the final round as she stood alone, with the last of the contenders having fallen, and well after the auditorium echoed with applause as she spelled the winning word, "Stromuhr."

Randhawa Haley, a front runner in the South Carolina gubernatorial race despite an all-out smear campaign against her, garnered 49 percent of the vote, more than doubling her closest opponent in the Republican primaries June 8. She won 42 of South Carolina's 46 counties, but closest rival US Congressman Gresham Barrett of the SC 3rd district, with four counties in hand, has refused to concede pushing the race into a run-off to be held June 22.
