From the Editor-in-Chief
Volume XII • Issue 2 • October 2015 (110 pages including 6 for cover) Editor-in-Chief Lt Col Pritam Singh Mehta (Retd.) Associate Editor Santosh Pathak
Dear Readers, Greetings from IndiaSAFE! In a significant development with far reaching implications for the security industry, IIT Bombay recently launched a National Center of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security (NCETIS) with a focus to develop modern technology and leverage the existing expertise available. The IIT-B Center will cater to the technology requirements of state police, central paramilitary and other internal security agencies. NCETIS is a joint venture of IIT Bombay and Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) which aims to develop indigenous technology and self-sufficiency in Electronic System Design Manufacturing in the strategic sector of internal security. It will mainly address the technology innovation gaps and the requirements of security agencies, and has been set up under the Central Government’s flagship Digital India initiative with an initial budget allocation of INR 83 crore for the first five years. The centre aims to develop prototypes and provide solutions to the problems of security users, and will also try to identify industry partners for the possible commercialization of the developed technology. The center will also actively engage with the manufacturing industry for commercialization and technology licensing. Focus areas are as diverse as biometric applications, chemical and biological warfare, communication systems (wireless), cyber and data security, Ground Penetrative Radar (GPR) for landmine detection, product interaction design and prototyping sensors and detectors for explosives, thermal imaging, unmanned vehicles, video surveillance etc. Coming close on the heels of the announcement of the amendment to the Preferential Market Access Policy last month, the setting up of the NCETIS adds immensely to the ‘Make in India’ campaign and will boost local production, albeit the initial pickup might be slow. Till next month, stay safe and happy reading! With warm regards,

the glass specifications, fixing details and glass divisions, ensuring adequate structural strength with respect to live load and wind load, heat protection through diffused sunlight from the roof, glass alignment not allowing any water leakage, air vent cut-outs for hot air release, adequate air circulation inside the enclosure and structurally sound glass floor to absorb dead load and jumping load. Every aspect which includes on-desk designing, metal support detailing, steel templates for glass form and dimensioning, glass processing, glass installation, sealant application and overall aesthetics were the vendor’s responsibility.

any of the glass sheets are not only curved in different radius on individual axis but are also twisted in plane, while aligning with the adjacent glass which is curved in different radii, but still aligned in accuracy of millimetres, to ensure butt joints which are leakage proof. Also, the curved safety glass sheets are made in the factory and fitted individually at the site, where, in some
sheets the glass is supported on only 2 edges out of 4, although each panel weighs as much as 300kgs. For each glass panel a steel template is made cross braced to prevent distortion of template before it reaches the glass factory. Extremely efficient and skilled labour is involved to install the heavy glass, supported only on 2 edges, and not allowing any damage while handling even though there is hardly any platform for them to stand. As the glass sheets turn and enclose the form below
the floor slab, the task of glass installation becomes even more difficult because at some places, there is hardly 6” gap between the glass panel and the slab, and space is not enough even for the human hand.

the 35-minute projection mapping show, which opened in August and plays nightly at 7:00 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. The show was conceptualized and is presented by Christie India’s partner Tricolor India Schauspiel at this prestigious white peace pagoda also known as Dhauli Shanti Stupa, built in the 1970s. The performance recounts the Kalinga War, a bitter battle fought between King Ashoka and the then ruler of Kalinga on the banks of the Daya River in Dhauli circa 261 B.C. Although King Ashoka won the war, his victory was almost like a defeat considering the large number of lives lost. This revelation inspired him to shun violence and convert to Buddhism to spread the message of peace. Bright and beautiful visuals recounting the great battle – and consequent transformation of King Ashoka into a peace-loving ruler who served his subjects well – are shown using four Christie Roadster S+22K-J 3DLP®
projectors. Installed in custombuilt towers in front of the monument, the projectors are stacked on top of each other and project onto a surface area measuring about 700 square meters. This is the first permanent projection mapping installation using Christie projectors in the state of Odisha. Himanshu Sabharwal, creative director of Tricolor India Schauspiel, commented, “We have chosen to deploy the Roadster S+22K-Js because of their unmatched brightness and robustness for an outdoor install like this. I’m proud of the installation and the results because our artistic experiment of live painting came out really well and we have been able to effectively engage the audience with the mesmerizing story of King Ashoka. The show is very much appreciated by our client – the Chief Minister of the state of Odisha – as well as the general public who have been visiting the monument for daily shows.” According to October 2015

Sabharwal, the biggest challenge during the installation was positioning the projectors. Faced with limited space in front of the Dhauli Peace Pagoda, the Tricolor India team constructed customized towers equipped with hydraulic pan-and-tilt capabilities so that the projectors that are installed inside can be positioned and calibrated accurately. “We congratulate our partner Tricolor India Schauspiel for completing yet another outstanding installation with a stunning delivery of this highly-anticipated projection mapping show at the Dhauli Peace Pagoda in Bhubaneswar,” said Lin Yu, Vice President, Christie Asia Pacific, “I applaud Himanshu and his team for their creativity and innovation in utilizing a live painting concept to tell the inspiring story of King Ashoka. We’re also delighted that the Christie Roadster J Series projectors installed have provided the best visual experience for the audience.”

Distance: The Other Variable Impact of target distance on camera surveillance functionality Gaining the Most High-Quality Video for Remote Sites, Perimeters and Outdoor Environments
Introduction
Z
oom cameras allow security users to view targets up close from hundreds of feet away. Megapixel cameras can cover larger areas with fewer cameras. However, with technology advancing, are there more current and/ or effective solutions that can help a facility get the most detailed and clear video of outdoor or perimeter locations for security or operations monitoring? This white paper will look specifically at how the distance of a target from a surveillance camera can impact camera functionality related to available light collection. We will discuss solutions to this problem including the idea of locating the camera closer to the target to improve low light performance First, we will look at the historic challenges of where surveillance cameras are placed and how infrastructure requirements drive camera locations. Then we will examine how to measure and assess the impact of those challenges. Considering how technology has improved and enabled better collection of high-quality video, we will focus on quantifying the improvement and assessing the drawbacks of advanced technologies. Finally, we will look at what the findings suggest about establishing parameters to continuously improve light sensitivity in outdoor and perimeter security applications. These steps – define, measure, assess, improve and con-
trol (DMAIC) – reflect the data-driven improvement cycle commonly used in Six Sigma programs. These parameters provide an ideal framework to assess the distance to target and light sensitivity in surveillance applications, allowing the accurate measurement of their impact.
igher costs are a reflection of the challenges of perimeter or remote site video surveillance. Compared to the rest of an enterprise surveillance
or network. Because of these challenges, cameras are often located far away from the points an organization is actually trying to monitor and protect, or remain non-existent. This approach leads to challenges with video quality and low light performance, and often, means less than optimal coverage for outdoor, perimeter and isolated environments, or the absence of cameras altogether. Surveillance professionals use a variety of methods, including terms such as ‘pixels-per-foot’ (PPF) to help evaluate the utility of video equipment to per-
system, the part of the system covering the outside perimeter or a remote site is the most expensive on a cost-per-camera basis. Factors that impact costs are the greater distance away that cameras must be located, the greater amount of materials (cables, infrastructure etc.) needed, and the costs of disrupting hard-surface materials (such as asphalt or concrete) necessary to trench for cables. Longer cables translate into more materials being used, and trenching through concrete, aggregate or asphalt negatively impacts drainage and erosion. In the case of a remote site, the installation of video surveillance cameras for either security or operations has not been conceivable, due to absence of power and/
form an expected task. For example, a systems integrator will evaluate how many pixels are required to recognize a person or to read a license plate. Considering the number of pixels and the size of an area being covered can help an integrator determine which equipment is needed to provide the resolution for a particular application. This process is effective but can be a challenge when trying to cover large, remote, or outdoor areas. An overlooked aspect when specifying cameras to cover large areas is the distance of the target from the camera. This variable especially relates to light collection – how much light is collected by the image sensor based on the dis-

tance of the target from the camera? The ‘inverse-square’ law explains how light decreases over distance. Specifically, the amount of light that reaches an image sensor is ‘inversely proportional to the square of the distance’ between the light source and the camera. If you double the distance, illumination is reduced by a factor of four.
Measure – How can we measure our success?
M
ore light is collected if the camera is located close to the target. In
contrast, if the target is far from the camera, fewer photons of light are available for detection. Offsetting the effects of this one simple variable can make the difference between a surveillance system that does the job and one that fails. Technology choices can mitigate the challenges, but at what cost? For example, using a standard resolution surveillance camera, an operator can read a license plate with a 8MM focal length lens from about 30 feet away (based on the guideline of 50 horizontal pixels per foot). An alternative option is to place a megapixel camera at a distance of 90
feet – where data and power sources are readily available. When using a two-megapixel camera at a distance of 90 feet with the same pixels per foot, a 14MM focal length is required. At this focal length and based on typical sensor sizes (e.g., 1/2.7), the light available per pixel at the sensor is reduced by approximately a factor of nine. Traditional cameras try to compensate for the lack of photons by increasing amplification of the signal (introducing noise), extending exposure times (introducing blur) and adding noise reduction filters. While these techniques can improve the visibility of an image they do not fundamentally change the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and the result is a marginal, not a fundamental, improvement. Considering the element of light, the lens diameter has to scale along with the distance ratio in order to increase light collection. At 300 feet, both the area of the lens and each pixel on the image sensor would need to be 100 times larger to capture the same number of photons as a surveillance camera located 30 feet away from the target. These diameters and capabili-

T
here must be sufficient light to gain quality video and the smaller pixel sizes of megapixel cameras make them less sensitive to light, which further complicates the issue. Using a larger image sensor to provide larger pixel size would require more expensive lenses. The maximum aperture opening (f-stop), lens diameter and focal length are variables that impact the effectiveness of surveillance cameras viewing long distances. All the variables make it critical to test the functionality of any camera system before committing to a large installation and making a significant investment. To summarize, capturing useful video images from far away requires additional investment. The ability to see greater detail using a higher-resolution camera does not address the necessary light requirements. Light levels diminish across long distances, which can make viewing distant locations – such as along a facility’s perimeter or large outdoor areas – from a camera located hundreds of feet away either impractical or expensive. The solution to capture video across long distances is to shorten the distance. Instead of requiring cameras to view long distances, it makes sense to locate the camera closer to the item being viewed. But there are challenges to this approach: Limitations of IP network reach. IP cameras must connect to the network, and the farthest reaches of an

enterprise might be beyond the reach of the network. Locating cameras within reach of the network complicates viewing distant objects. No available power. A distant perimeter, parking lot or other asset might be located far from any available power source. Is trenching practical? Digging trenches for electricity or network connectivity is expensive, and it may not be practical based on the environment. For example, what if an asset to be protected is located on the other side of a lake? What if it’s across a public street? Erecting poles and stringing wires is also a possibility, but the approach could disrupt aesthetics, cause environmental concerns, create easy targets for vandalism or be vulnerable to environmental issues, such as violent winds.
Improve – how can we take advantage of what we assessed incrementally and continuously?
I
t is possible to overcome the challenges of locating surveillance cameras to view distant assets by using solar power to operate the camera and wireless transmission to move the video signal from the camera to a network video management system. New solarpowered and wireless camera systems can put surveillance cameras close to the subjects they are viewing. This approach overcomes the aforementioned technology challenges and potentially higher expense of generating clear images using cameras to view across long distances – especially the problem of not enough light. Shorter distance means more light reaches the camera, allowing even standard-resolution devices to capture images clearly without specialized
lenses, optics or other additional technology expense. Wireless access to video is changing how security systems operate at the edge of the network. Installing a surveillance camera no longer requires a video cable and a dedicated power source, and there is no need to run wires through trenches. New wireless systems can transmit video through the air from remotely located cameras, up to two miles away, to a centralized video gateway that is connected to the network and tied into a video management system. Today’s wireless design options facilitate wireless connectivity to an enterprise video solution, by way of line of sight, cellular dial up, or satellite transmission. The camera remains close to the object being viewed, which vastly simplifies image capture and retention, and allows it to perform at a potentially much lower cost. Also, solar panels, with integrated five-day lithium-ion battery storage, can provide sustainable power to special low-power surveillance cameras used to view remote locations. Such an approach greatly expands the coverage area of a video system at an affordable price. Inexpensive, remote IP video surveillance is crucial to securing perimeters, remote and large outdoor areas. Self-contained camera systems – those powered by solar energy and using low-power wireless video transmission in the unlicensed radio spectrum – can also easily be moved from one location to another to provide a dynamic and adaptive approach to video surveillance coverage. For example, if there is a particular problem area on a perimeter, the wireless surveillance camera can be moved to provide coverage of that area on a temporary basis, and then moved somewhere else if another need arises. In the case of a special event that reOctober 2015

quires additional security and video coverage, cameras can be added on an ad hoc basis, with no need to run wires or pay other infrastructure costs.
Control – how can we establish parameters to control continuous improvement?
D
eciding where to locate video surveillance cameras is a basic task of designing an effective surveillance system. A multitude of factors have to be considered, such as backlighting, lowlight levels and sufficient image clarity to read a license number or recognize details of a person’s face. The proliferation in the market of higher-powered zoom lenses and super-high-resolution megapixel cameras suggests a wealth of new possibilities related to placement of cameras. These systems promise to see more with fewer cameras and to enable end users to save money in the process. However, every technology has its limitations, and even the most up-todate camera systems are only as good as the quality of the image that reaches the camera, which is a function of how much light reaches the image sensor. As the distance between the camera and image sensor increases, the amount of light that reaches the sensor goes down exponentially. Even the highest resolution camera with the most advanced low light processing cannot see an image clearly unless there is enough light. Too often, system designers overlook the effect of distance on how much light reaches the camera, or they design expensive systems to overcome the problem. A simpler approach is to put the camera nearer the object being viewed, and new solarpowered, wireless video cameras can do just that. The result can be less expensive systems with superior performance.

Extended Ethernet
Ethernet Transmission over Coaxial or UTP Cable By Iain Deuchars – Business Development Manager, ComNet
Ethernet over non-standard copper cabling
coupled with the medium type that dictates the product selection.
A
Maintaining network integrity
s the security and surveillance market continues its shift towards IP based technology, the ability for integrators and installers to utilise different transmission mediums gains significance. Within networking, the structured cabling standards offer twisted pair cabling up to a distance of one hundred meters and then optical fibre for distances up to the limitations of the optical technology. While these rules work well for the standard office location, the CCTV market can find itself in different physical environments and facing different challenges. A large number of IP installations will be migrating away from analogue solutions where coaxial cable was used and in other cases, due to the nature and location of CCTV systems, twisted pair beyond one hundred meters and low grade cable such as telephone CAT3 cable could be the preferred or possibly the only solution available. In an environment such as this you need to have a scope of transmission solutions that covers all the possible copper mediums and at the same time supports the requirements of modern IP systems such as Power over Ethernet (PoE). In the transmission arena different technologies exist that enable Ethernet signals to be sent over non-standard cable or extended distances over standard twisted pair cable. The technologies will have different performance criteria and it is these October 2015
O
ne important feature for a copper extension product could be to maintain the network integrity. This ensures that the network speed (wire speed) of the link is maintained at either 100Mbps or 10Mbs and that the connection is fully symmetrical. By doing this it is possible to integrate units into an Ethernet network with complete confidence that the links in no way degrade the performance of the network as they operate at the chosen wire speed. It should also be added at this stage that the line speed selected does not have to be the data rate your traffic must pass at but rather the maximum data rate that the transmission path will support.
The ComNet CopperLine range operates in this very way and supports extended distance transmission over either coaxial or twisted pair cable, with the coaxial medium specified at RG59 or better and the twisted pair CAT5 or better. At 100Mbps distances extend to over six hundred meters on the minimum grade cable and if data rates are set to10Mbps 37

impossible and so the design rational must change to that of the lower af levels. To accommodate this CopperLine PoE+ devices operate as PSE and PD devices through the link to negotiate with the Ethernet switch and camera respectively in the example shown.
distances can be up to fifteen hundred meters on RG59 coaxial cable. The coaxial cable solution provides a simple migration path for analogue end users with legacy coaxial installations who can run their new IP systems over the existing installed infrastructure. Along with the data CopperLine also provides support for PoE at either the 15.4W (IEEE802.3af) or the 30W (IEEE802.3at) power levels. Unfortunately passing power through copper cables is governed by the laws of physics and there is an inverse relationship between the distance and the power level that can be maintained across the link. At the 15.4W level CopperLine operates in a pass-through mode, where the devices outside of the CopperLine units (in the example below an Ethernet switch and IP camera) function as the PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment) and PD (Powered Device) respectively. CopperLine units can either be externally powered or via the PSE.
By configuring in this way, either of the CopperLine devices can be used as a power injector with voltage levels up to 57V DC allowable at the device. For example if the local (switch end) CopperLine unit was powered with 57V DC it would supply passive PoE to the remote CopperLine device that would then fully negotiate with the connected PD to supply power.
CopperLine range
C
omNet offers Copperline products in a number of permutations to simplify network integration. The af and at level PoE supporting products are available from single channel up to sixteen channels, with all units having equal numbers of in and out ports as point-to-point links only are configured. A miniature pass through or non PoE version is offered for remote locations where the smallest possible form factor is required. This could be direct mounted within the camera enclosure if required. For locations where more than one Ethernet connection is required in the field, Comnet Self Managed Switch (SMS) technology with integrated CopperLine port offers simple solutions. The SMS switch provides four standard 10/ 100 ports with the options for PoE levels up to 30W and the fifth port being either a twisted pair or coaxial CopperLine connection. The CopperLine port can be configured
These powering options provide total flexibility, by offering the simplest installation with everything powered from the central PoE switch or the ability to deliver maximum power levels to the camera by externally powering the CopperLine devices. The ability to provide the correct power levels at the PD will be dictated by the type and quality of the cable being used and also the voltage level present at the PSE. When it comes to Ethernet switches that can operate as PSE devices the ability to increase the voltage level at the Ethernet port could be very useful. If the voltage levels can be increased then there can be voltage drop in the cable but the voltage at the PD location could still be enough to power the connected device. In the case of IEEE802.3af the required minimum voltage at the PD is 37VDC and the maximum voltage allowed at the PSE is 57V DC. If the switch is one with a mains power input then it will tend not to have that ability and the level will be set at 48V DC but if ComNet switches with DC input are used and the power supply can be increased on some models up to 57V DC then the switch in turn will provide those levels. When the PD requires IEEE802.3 at 25.5W power levels and a minimum voltage of 42.5V DC then the game changes significantly. The ability to deliver 25.5W at 42.5V DC from a central PSE offering 48V DC at distances above 100m is October 2015

of copper wires is required so the applications can be many and varied.
for 10Mbps or 100Mbps operation depending on the cable type and distance required.
Analogue & IP mixed
I
n certain applications the existing analogue over coaxial solution is not being changed but the end user would like to deploy some new IP devices in the field. If this is the case the ComNet SLOC (Security Link Over Coax) system provides an asymmetrical Ethernet channel and a single simplex analogue composite video signal over a single coaxial cable, allowing use of the existing infrastructure to carry the Ethernet signal. The system supports transmission distances up to 500m on RG59 cable and at this distance 36Mbps down and 4Mbps up Ethernet speeds are supported.
The range is completed with a SFP module in twisted pair configuration that can be housed in any MSA compliant SFP housing. This module gives great flexibility to network implementation as the design radius around any Ethernet switch is now greatly increased by the integrated CopperLine technology. Via a simple converter cable or adapter the module presents a BNC connector and enables coaxial cable runs to terminate directly on the Ethernet switch. Another possible use for the SFP module could be in a 60W PoE media converter that ComNet can supply. If used with these devices a 60W IP camera can be installed with the Ethernet signal passing over legacy coaxial cabling or extended twisted pair runs.
The transmitter unit at the camera can also support IEEE802.3at PoE and act as a PSE. It can even be powered from an existing 24V AC camera power supply and generate the PoE from this. This would support connection of a device up to100m away over CAT5 cable or better requiring up to 25.5W of power.
Conclusion
I
P security & surveillance systems will be deployed in locations based on the operational requirements of the particular end user. The majority of these deployments will be outside of the typical office or building environment and as a result the standard structured cabling solutions may not always be available or provide the best answer. With their range of Extended Ethernet solutions, ComNet provides network operation over non-standard copper mediums as a reliable, proven option for end users. The benefits of utilising existing infrastructure in any project can be significant from a financial and time perspective and those alone make it a solution that cannot be overlooked. In the case of no alternative, the ability to send Ethernet signals over very low grade twisted pair, coaxial or extended CAT5 or better could be the catalyst that enable a project to move forward. When you add to this a -40 to +75째C operating temperature and Lifetime Warranty, the solutions provided by ComNet offer a very interesting proposition as part of your IP network.
If your provided medium is low quality copper, such as CAT3 telephone cable, then the solution is based around VDSL2 transmission technology. Many readers will be familiar with ADSL technology as that which brings the broadband service to homes and offices and this operates on the same principal. Unlike CopperLine, VDSL2 provides a symmetrical performance with different upstream and downstream data rates and also a diminishing return on throughput based on an increasing transmission distance. A benefit of the reducing throughput is the ability to extend distances, well beyond that of the CopperLine technology, with up to 2km on coaxial cable and 3km on CAT3 twisted pair achievable. Terminal 2 is the principal international departure terminal and includes restaurants, duty-free shops and two executive lounges for first and business class travellers. There are also two smaller terminals dedicated solely for diplomatic flights and military operations. Aviance Ghana is one of eight companies making up the Aviance Alliance, which operates at more than 100 airport locations across 4 continents. At Kotoka, the ground services include managing all the passenger concourse facilities in Terminal 2, plus passenger check-in and baggage handling, the loading and unloading of cargo from freight flights and a cargo warehouse operation for all

The CCTV system uses a combination of IP66-rated dome and bullet cameras with either 1.3 or 3MP resolution. A total of four DS-2CD2312-I 1.3MP Outdoor Network Mini Dome cameras were installed, two in the public areas of the terminal and two at the main gates where passengers complete the biometric log-in process and enter through the turnstiles. To complement the dome cameras, nine EXIR bullet cameras were used: five DS-2CD2212I5 1.3 MP units for general surveillance in the warehouses together with a pair of DS-2CD2232-I5 3MP units where greater resolution was required, and two DS-2CD2632F-I 3MP vari-focal EXIR cameras for the main vehicle entry and exit gates. “All of the cameras offer great resolution, with 3D DNR and Digital WDR as standard, together with a full complement of alarm triggers, including line crossing and motion and intrusion detection” says Haim Atanelov, Skylinks General Manager, “But, the true day/ night capability of the EXIR infrared technology meant that they always delivered clear images, even in the warehouses where lighting conditions are not good. he new system has already proved its worth, helping to completely seal the export warehouse in particular and enabling Kotoka to meet ACC3 accreditation. Together with securing the import warehouse, which serves global airline and cargo brands such as British Airways, South African Airways, Alitalia, KLM, Virgin, DHL, Cargolux etc., it means that the airport is well placed to continue to attract business. “Aviance is especially pleased with the
smooth integration of the Hikvision IP system with the access control system at the 4 turnstiles,” said Atanelov, “Something which was also carefully noted by the EU ACC3 validators. Aviance was also pleased with the integration of the new system with the existing analog CCTV system, although it did show up the difference in video quality immediately. We have already agreed to add further IP cameras to the site and Aviance is committed to phasing out the old system in favour of a totally Hikvision IP system as soon as possible.”

T
he City of Cincinnati, which is often referred to as the Queen City, has nearly 300,000 Cincinnatians living in the downtown core and over 2.2 million residents in the surrounding metropolitan area. This influx of citizens has made Cincinnati the third largest city in the state of Ohio, which draws in over 2 million visitors each year. The Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) understood the importance of having video surveillance and other advanced security technologies to keep its citizens safe; investing in its first Genetec Omnicast IP video management system (VMS) in 2008. Over time, the benefits of the video management system prompted the CPD to expand their Omnicast system, and thus sought to leverage the innate scalability of Omnicast to freely and gradually add more cameras as necessary. When the CPD was looking to expand its functionality and benefit from the latest advancements in IP security
technology, they worked with Federal Signal Corporation, an international provider and installer of integrated solutions, to upgrade to Genetec Omnicast IP video surveillance as part of the Genetec unified security platform, Security Center. Genetec Security Center offers advanced functionality such as an intuitive mobile client which provides secure access to video from any mobile device, a map-based interface which makes it easier for operators to locate security devices and handle alarms, and health monitoring which automatically alerts administrators to potential system vulnerabilities.

Having the ability to instantly playback video directly from the live video frame during an emergency, has been the most impactful time-saving feature for the CPD Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), whose officers handle all investigations. “If we have an incident, we can view real-time video, and at the click of a mouse, see what happened only moments before; as well as from a minute ago, to hour ago, to a day ago. Then, it’s only a couple more clicks to bookmark and protect the video,” said Whitton.
User privileges and audit reports keep policies in check
B
eyond the maritime entities and the RTCC, other Cincinnati city
departments such as the 911 Dispatch Center and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) have access to the system. Operationally, even the Cincinnati Public Works and Traffic Engineering Departments are using the system to monitor weather conditions on city thoroughfares, spot hazardous debris on roadways and monitor major roadway construction projects. The CPD has also established partnerships with agencies such as the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority, receiving permission-based access to systems which monitor their respective properties. Since many city departments use the Security Center system, the City of Cincinnati takes every precaution to ensure that only those with proper permissions
have access to certain cameras and system functionalities by setting up very strict user access privileges within Security Center. On a case-by-case basis, the City conducts audit reports to see if any evidence, or the system itself, was being used outside the guidelines of its policies. A quick audit report helps to ensure that the video surveillance system is being used ethically, and that the privacy of its citizens is protected at all times. In terms of ensuring continuous system availability, the CPD has been using the health monitoring feature in Security Center so that they can be immediately notified via e-mail if portable or wireless cameras, or cameras in more important locations, go offline.
Massive City Savings with Milestone VMS
Danish municipality increases security and saves more than one million Euros annually after installing Milestone video software

The Milestone-based security system together with a proactive approach to the use of surveillance video has reduced the damages to property in Aalborg significantly. In the case of the citizen center called Trekanten, the losses from damage to property have diminished to zero from previously being more than 100,000 Euros a year. The average response time for the city’s guard service is now down to 10 minutes even though the municipality covers 1,138 square kilometers. The effectiveness of the response has also im-

proved with the central command center being able to use the video feed from the cameras as visual verification to guide first-level responders in security incidents; the operators can determine the severity of the alarm and optimize the response. “The Milestone solution has saved us more than a million Euros in insurance costs. And the open platform technology is an important factor for us because it enables rapid rollout, flexible configuration and reduced cost of operation,” says Henrik Svenstrup, Video Management Software Manager, Aalborg Municipality. The municipality has installed Milestone XProtect Corporate video software with one management server and seven recording servers to handle approximately 300 surveillance cameras. The plan is to double the number of cameras within a year.
“The Milestone open platform technology in XProtect is a great advantage because it enables us to pick and choose from the widest range of cameras, and to select the optimal camera for a given task. The IT-savvy design of XProtect makes it easy for our IT department to integrate the VMS systems into the total IT infrastructure,” says Svenstrup. Aalborg Municipality also uses the Milestone Mobile Client that allows access to the central video system via smartphones and tablets. A number of local libraries are unstaffed, so the video system is used to ensure security. Milestone Mobile is used to enable nearby staff to be first responders and resolve smaller incidents. It could be that a visitor to the library inadvertently stayed after closing hours, when the doors are automatically locked. The presence of persons after closing hours will trigger the alarm system. The local
staff can then use the Milestone Mobile client to see the camera views from that location and determine the cause of the alarm, and ease the unfortunate late guest off the premises. This would save the central guard service for more serious incidents. The success of this concept has caused the word to spread to other institutions in Aalborg Municipality. Henrik Svenstrup experiences more and more of them asking for advice on video security. This trend is enforced by the positive experiences of staff at locations using the video to secure the premises. “In the beginning we experienced a bit of unease. But now the comfort in knowing that we can keep an eye on our staff and respond in the most efficient way depending on the situation, is taken very positively. We are getting more video ambassadors all the time,” said Svenstrup.
Arecont Vision® Megapixel Cameras Increase Situational Awareness at Vietnam’s Newest Healthcare Facility T he City International Hospital (CIH), located in the International Hi-Tech Healthcare Park in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is the first integrated healthcare facility in the country to provide a comprehensive healthcare solution employing advanced medical equipment and a professional medical staff. image performance, ease of use, and the ability to manage the system centrally or remotely. “Our experience with Arecont Vision® has made them our first choice for every large project because of their exceptional performance and image quality,” said Tran. Approximately two hundred Arecont Vision® megapixel cameras have been installed at CIH to date. These include approximately 100 SurroundVideo® 360° AV8365DN 8-MP panoramic cameras, and 35 SurroundVideo®180° AV8185DN 8-MP panoramic cameras.
These high-performing megapixel panoramic cameras deliver exceptional situational awareness in both day and night lighting conditions. Additionally, there are approximately 60 Arecont Vision® MegaVideo® AV2115DN compact day/ night megapixel cameras installed at key locations which are also operational 24/7. “The quality of Arecont Vision® megapixel cameras more than satisfies our requirements for image quality,” said Lai Voon Hon, General Director of Hoa Lam-Shangri-La, developer of the International Hi-Tech Healthcare Park, “The system is working very well for us and
Arecont Vision® is extremely responsive to our needs.” In addition to meeting the management’s needs for safety and surveillance purposes, the Arecont Vision® megapixel surveillance solution provides CIH with financial benefits as well. For example, a savings was realized from the smaller number of cameras and related accessories and licenses required versus a conventional IP or analog camera solution. Additional savings were also achieved from the reduction in manpower needed to watch video feeds and guard the facility.
Advanced Protection for Magna Carta O
ne of the most famous historical documents in Britain, if not the western world, is being protected by extinguishing and fire alarm panels from Advanced with installation by Reflex Systems. Sealed by King John at Runnymede in 1215, Magna Carta is celebrating its 800th anniversary (the actual anniversary is 15 June). It is the first example of an absolute monarch surrendering some of his powers, the beginning of a process that led eventually to our current system of government and the prototype for democratic government all over the world. The version protected by Advanced is particularly precious being one of only four surviving original 1215 Magna Carta sealed by King John and is kept in a special vault at Lincoln Castle, itself a Scheduled Monument, alongside Magna Carta’s sister document The Charter of the Forest (1217). Lincoln Castle, one of the best pre-
served in England was constructed in the 11th Century by William the Conqueror, and is one of only two to have two mottes. The fire and suppression systems installed by long-time Advanced partner Reflex Systems incorporate two MxPro 5 panels in the main heritage centre and the former Victorian prison building, which closed in 1878. Advanced’s ultradependable ExGo extinguishant release system has been installed in the Magna Carta vault. ExGo has been developed specifically for sensitive and strategic assets such as server rooms, historic and cultural attractions and control rooms. It has been installed in high-profile buildings across the globe, including the Romanian National Library and along oil pipelines in Sudan. MxPro is the industry-leading multiprotocol fire system. Offering real choice and flexibility, it includes two panel ranges, the EN54-2&4 approved MxPro 4 and EN54-2,4&13 approved MxPro 5. October 2015
44
It offers four protocols, Apollo, Argus, Hochiki and Nittan and a completely open installer network that benefits from free training and technical support. John Pye, Managing Director of Reflex Systems said, “Lincoln Castle required an open protocol fire system and we knew that Advanced panels could deliver maximum reassurance and long term reliability. Having worked with Advanced in the past, we knew that the equipment would be of the highest quality for such a historic building plus the system offers the flexibility to meet future requirements.” MxPro 5 panels can be used in single loop, single panel format or easily configured into high speed, 200 panel networks covering huge areas and tens of thousands of field devices. In total, one MxPro 5 four-loop panel was installed in the main prison building and one MxPro 5 two-loop panel was installed in the heritage centre. ExGo is suitable for almost all

single-flooding area applications and includes a range of control options and devices. It is approved to EN54 parts 2, 4 and 13 and EN12094-1 and is among the first systems to combine these with EN12094 Part 3 in a single solution. EN12094-3 relates to the integrated manual release on the front of the panel. ExGo can be integrated into Advanced’s Axis and MxPro fire panels, or any third party fire system. A spokesperson for Lincoln Castle
commented, “We’re very pleased with the Advanced systems installed by Reflex. As the Castle is a listed building, it was essential that the panels and detectors be as discrete as possible, particularly in the prison and the Magna Carta Vault. This year marks the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta and we are happy that our visitors will be able see one of the four original copies under the protection of Advanced panels.”
Neil Parkin, Sales Manager for Advanced added, “Advanced fire systems are famous for their quality and ease-of-use and being specified to protect life and cultural assets of this importance is testament to our work to stay at the forefront of the market. As a company we are proud of all of our jobs but this one is very special. They don’t come up very often and it says a lot about Advanced products that we are the first choice.”

Denver, TX Schools Rely on 3xLOGIC’s infinias Access Control On-going installation scheduled to reach 900 doors by end of 2015
3
xLOGIC, Inc., has announced that Denver City Schools, in Texas, has completed installation of 3xLOGIC’s Intelli-M access control solution at nearly 700 doors across 10 buildings in the school district. Plans call to complete an additional 200 doors by the end of the current year. In late 2010, Denver City Schools (Texas) approached the security integrator Digital Air Control (DAC), seeking a solution to their access control requirements. A competitive solution that had been installed in one of their facilities previously had fallen short of expectations and alternative solutions offered by local providers were cost prohibitive. The stand-alone locksets that were installed initially ran on batteries and required that someone with a PDA physically go to each door and re-program them. Obviously, this was time-consuming and costly. Denver City Schools sought a solution that could be centrally managed via
a web-based interface and had a more predictable power supply. Through their ongoing partnership with Digital Air Control, Denver City Schools was introduced to the infinias Intelli-M solution by 3xLOGIC. Digital Air Control’s relationship with Denver City Schools had focused primarily on HVAC and lighting automation to achieve better management of facility resources and improved cost-savings. DAC had not previously worked with the Intelli-M system. Dan Moore, Regional Manager of the Lubbock branch said, “My iniOctober 2015

tial impression of the Intelli-M solution was that it was much better in both design and cost than other access control system I had seen. In further dealings with infinias (now 3xLOGIC), I found them to be very customer centric and their technical support was outstanding.” DAC first installed the Intelli-M solution in Denver City School’s new Industrial Arts Building. DAC technicians found the infinias product “Simple to install and easy to program.” Digital Air Control later installed Intelli-M in Denver City’s new field house and bus barn, where they integrated access control into the over-head door systems and used long-range readers to enable buses access from drive-up gates. Digital Air Control also provides the school system with integration of the Intelli-M Access interface into a total-building management interface as well as remote management and maintenance of all of the schools’ systems. Control, is impressed with the Intelli-M product, “infinias’ (and now 3xLOGIC’s) ongoing reinvestment in their product gives us an ever-improving solution to offer to our customers.” After the locations noted above, DAC moved on to the school district’s maintenance and distribution facilities. In total, 10 buildings now boast the Intelli-M access
control system, with more in the planning stages. A leader in the Security industry for more than 15 years, 3xLOGIC is known for providing complete, easy-to-use surveillance solutions that seamlessly integrate audio, video, access control and disparate data such as ATM, Pointof-Sale (POS), analytics, etc. 3xLOG-
IC’s video surveillance solutions are engineered for scalability and are remarkably simple to install, use and service. Chilean Forests Are Safer with Expansion of Emergency Communications Technology Expansion of Chile’s largest private digital radio system will improve security, safety, operational efficiency and environmental impact of Forestal Mininco
M
otorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) has announced the expansion of its managed services agreement supporting Forestal Mininco’s mission-critical communications system. The system improves employee safety and security, operational efficiency and Forestal Mininco’s impact on the environment. The system supports a number of Motorola Solutions’ high-tech innova-
tions, such as the TETRA messaging application, which enables lighthouse keepers to deliver weather data, such as air humidity, wind and rainfall, from radios in the forest to the dispatch center. The data is then analyzed to generate forecasts and statistics, predict the behavior of fires and used to develop action plans. “As the operations of Forestal Mininco are very diverse and carried out in a rugged landscape, they need to be coordinated. We had to keep improving the technology deployed some years ago. In order to extend coverage, we were looking to seamlessly cover the area between Regions 7 – 9. In addition, thanks to October 2015

Security Solutions for Airports at Inter Airport Europe 2015
The inter airport Europe trade fair will be held in Munich from 6 to 9 October 2015, and Dallmeier will present the very latest in video security solutions for airports there ith the Panomera® multifocal sensor system, Dallmeier will demonstrate the latest technology for airport security at the inter airport trade fair. Panomera® is a patented camera technology, which was specially developed to enable comprehensive video surveillance of expansive areas. The multifocal sensor technology makes it possible to display wide expanses as well as long distances in unequalled resolution quality, in real time and at high frame rates of up to 30fps – and the area can be monitored from a single location. An outstanding feature of the system is its unique combination of an overall view with simultaneous high detail resolution at every distance. This offers many advantages for airport security. At airports, huge premises with a variety of areas must be monitored around the clock, whether on

New Zealand Customs Select Morpho New Zealand customs services select Morpho’s next generation e-Gates for enhanced passenger processing
M
orpho (Safran) has signed a new 5-year agreement with NZ Customs Services (NZCS) through to 2020. This will see NZCS rollout an initial nine next generation Morpho e-Gates in 2015 at Auckland international airport, with the option to supply new and replacement gates over the next five years across major New Zealand airports. The agreement also covers a Biometric Research Partnership that will see NZCS and Morpho collaborate to advance global research in Facial Recognition. The objective of this collaboration is to improve the accuracy of the recognition algorithms embedded on the e-Gates, and contribute to an even higher level of security at the border while further reducing the false rejections of legitimate travellers. “SmartGate has been very well received in New Zealand, with over 13
million travellers having successfully used the technology since its introduction in 2009,” says Carolyn Tremain, Comptroller of New Zealand Customs Service, “We are expanding the capability to ensure we continue to stay at the forefront of passenger processing efficiency and border security, and enhance the passenger experience.” “The new generation SmartGate is a clear reflection of our collaborative approach with NZCS to pave the way for the future of border control solutions in the region,” stated Tim Ferris, Managing Director of Morpho’s local subsidiary, Morpho Australasia, “This new technology has the capability to further simplify and speed up border processing whilst offering the highest level of security for our borders.” Since 2009, New Zealand’s Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch airports have been using SmartGate
to give eligible travellers the option of self-processing through passport control. The system uses facial recognition technology to compare facial images of the traveller against the data contained in the e-Passport’s chip. The project has been a great success with the travelling public and was awarded Project of the Year by the NZ Government in 2010. The new generation SmartGate brings additional convenience as it speeds up traveller processing with a one-step process, eliminating the kiosk and ticket part of the current system. It uses e-Gates that have a smaller footprint to meet the space constraints of airports whilst also having Morpho’s latest workflow and biometric matching software. In addition to this, is the solution’s ability to add other biometric capabilities such as fingerprint or iris recognition at a future stage.

SDN and the Changing Face of Enterprise Networks By Subhasish Gupta – Country Manager, India & SAARC, Allied Telesis
Introduction
E
nterprise data networks have evolved rapidly over the last few decades, and are continuing to evolve at a steady pace. The office data networks of the 1990s were unsophisticated. PCs and servers shared lengths of coaxial cable, or chains of hubs and repeaters. The goal was simply to get packets back and forth in a relatively reliable fashion. Bandwidth management, access control, high
availability and loop protection were beyond the capability of the equipment in use at that time. As with any technology going through a maturing phase, LAN networking had a period of competing options. At the transport layer, Token Ring and FDDI were serious alternatives to Ethernet until Gigabit Ethernet arrived. At the networking layer, enterprise networks ran multiple protocols. For a long time, IPv4 was a minor player in comparison to Appletalk, IPX and NetBEUI. However, with the standardization onto IP over Ethernet, the industry has moved forward rapidly. Since 2000, with the transport layer and network layer battles out of the way, the business of adding capability, reliability and performance to Enterprise networks has progressed in earnest: ● Performance went ahead in leaps: ○ Layer-3 switching extended wirespeed forwarding right across the LAN. ○ Ethernet jumped from 100Mbps to 1Gbps to 10Gbps, while price per port continued to fall. ○ Forwarding tables expanded by factors of 10. ● Security extended from the Internet gateway into the whole network. October 2015
54
● Multiple generations of link and device resiliency solutions were developed. ● Bandwidth management and Quality of Service (QoS) grew in scope and precision. ● Network management, monitoring and diagnostic features advanced in breadth and depth. ● Routing protocols and IP service utilities matured, through the work of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Today, enterprise networks are rich with complexity and capability. Voice and video have converged with data onto a single IP-over-Ethernet infrastructure. Wireless Ethernet connectivity has become ubiquitous. High levels of security, reliability and manageability are now a basic expectation. However, it is important not to fall into the trap of thinking that the time of innovation is at an end. Despite the huge amount of progress made so far, there is still no room for complacency. Technical advances are driven by the need to meet challenges, and there are still plenty of problems arising in the realm of enterprise networking. More innovation is needed, and so Enterprise networking continues to innovate.

Today’s challenges
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
T
he rapid proliferation of mobile computing devices has irrevocably changed the landscape. The days of enterprise networks being accessed just from a fixed set of user equipment sanctioned by the IT team are gone forever. Not only are these mobile devices diverse, the applications they provide to users are advancing in every direction at once. Dealing with the mobility, diversity, and rapid advancement of these devices while maintaining the security, reliability and performance of the network, is a unique challenge.
the data network still provides problems to be solved. Particularly problematic are: ● The increasing size of files that need to be transferred across the network. Items like Computer Aided Design (CAD), movie production or medical imaging files are large pieces of data that need to be transferred speedily, because a user is waiting to view the file. These bursts of rapid file transfer provide serious bandwidth competition for realtime services. ● The amount of ad-hoc video conferencing, using applications like Skype, that occurs now. Even though these video calls are not scheduled events using the organizing video conferencing suite, users expect reasonable quality in the call, and are typically unaware of the effects their calls may be having on other data flows in the network.
Private data centers
S
acking up servers to tape on a daily or weekly basis is no longer sufficient. In the case of a severe event that takes premises out of action, the time taken to re-establish all services and content from tape is not acceptable. Organizations need real-time mirroring of servers to an offsite location, and a process to cut over to running services live from that offsite location. Managing a mirrored infrastructure, and the data flows to keep the mirror site in sync, are not simple matters.
erver rooms no longer hold just a set of file servers, with inbuilt disk storage. Now, even moderate-sized organizations host a number of virtualized servers, accessing data from a Storage Area Network (SAN) or a set of Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. Low-latency, high bandwidth data transfer is expected within these inhouse data centers. Also, as services move between physical hosts, and data migrates between storage locations, the switching equipment must be reactive to these changes. This level of network performance and reactivity has not been typical in enterprise networks in the past.

onvergence of real-time services like VoIP, video conferencing, surveillance video, machine control onto
a repository of data and applications. Cloud-hosted services put unprecedented pressure on Internet connections, creating another growing bandwidth management headache.
Increased data exchange with clients
I
n a number of commercial and government sectors, the exchange of high volumes of data with clients is an essential component of the organization’s operation. Moreover, much of this data transfer needs to be performed securely. Reliably providing controlled secure access to private servers, whilst ensuring acceptable data transfer rates, is an area ripe for innovation.
High bandwidth connectivity with external mobile users
T
he flip-side of BYOD is that the mobile devices that users bring into the office are also with them when they are out of the office. The ability to check email, update records and examine data – anywhere, anytime – is something users greatly appreciate, and the uptake of this opportunity has been enormous.
he most high-profile development in data networking in recent years has been the emergence of ‘the cloud’ as

Additionally, the advent of tablets – which constitute reasonably capable computing platforms, but with limited storage – has enabled a trend towards data staying in secure onsite or cloud – based storage, and remotely accessed from the tablet. This greatly reduces the risk associated with significant amounts of data being stored in theft-vulnerable laptops. Altogether, this trend to remote access from mobile devices is distinctly beneficial for productivity and data security, but it is yet another trend that is putting pressure on WAN bandwidth. So much activity – downloading e-mail attachments, loading data files and viewing multimedia content – that was previously carried out over the LAN is now occurring across the Internet. What’s more, the bandwidth of mobile data connections is now in the multiple megabits per second, and users expect their mobile devices to receive data at a decent rate. Maintaining a good service to mobile users requires taking a fresh approach to how data services are provided. It makes sense for organizations to take advantage of cloud-based services, which have high bandwidth Internet access, to serve mobile users. But at the same time, LAN-based users experience better performance from servers located in-house. How to achieve a balance between on-site and off-site location of services, or even migrate users’ points of access as they move around, are new technical puzzles for IT teams to solve.
Energy efficiency
R
educing energy consumption in order to manage costs, achieve sustainability goals, and adhere to legislative requirements, is a key performance objective within organizations worldwide. The focus on resource conservation is now far more than just lip service
– many organizations are instituting a role of Chief Sustainability Officer, who has a seat at the board table. Inevitably, IT, with air-conditioned rooms full of equipment running 24/7, and PCs on every desktop, receives a good deal of attention from those tasked with reducing energy consumption. Meeting power reduction goals puts pressure on IT teams to do some innovative thinking. IT staff know that not all their servers and network equipment need to run 24/7, and that services can tick along on less equipment at certain times of the day, and certain days of the week. But, automating the shut-down of the right equipment at the right times, without impacting users, is by no means simple. Reliable solutions for this process need to extract extensive data from servers and network infrastructure, perform realtime analysis of this data, and apply robust algorithms to migrate virtual servers, re-route traffic and shut down or power up sections of the network.
Extending network reach
A
s IP-over-Ethernet becomes the universal communication medium, the range of locations and equipment that connect to data networks is expanding apace. Electronic signage, alarm monitors, surveillance cameras, pumping stations, environmental data collectors, radars, solar panels, vehicles and more, are all joining onto the enterprise network. Each has its own characteristics and requirements, and special challenges for IT. This is a trend that is just ramping up, of course. The much vaunted ‘Internet of Things’ is still yet to really come into its own. Monitoring, troubleshooting, con-

trolling connections to such a variety of devices, in such a variety of locations, many of them physically remote with no staff on-site, is going to be very different to in-house network operation.
Managing complexity
T
he most immediate challenge that enterprise network managers are facing today is the fact that managing complex networks is difficult. As network equipment grows in complexity, and the applications running over the network diversify, network managers are caught in a bind. On one hand, enterprises are increasingly dependent on the reliable operation of their data network. On the other hand, ensuring reliable interoperation of all these applications, and troubleshooting the issues that arise, is increasingly difficult. Moreover, the pace of change is forever increasing. Enterprises are eager to reduce costs and realize opportunities by converging yet more services onto the data network, and by taking hold of new technologies like service virtualization, mobile access, and the other technology changes discussed above.
Meeting the challenges
T
he industry has not simply put these new challenges into the too-hard basket, but is developing new ways of working that will meet the current challenges, and further evolve the operation of Enterprise networking. Frequently, these initiatives are collectively described as Software Defined Networking (SDN). However, as with any umbrella term, SDN means different things to different people. It is important not to assume that SDN is a paradigm change that will uniformly re-engineer the world’s networks into new mode of operation.
www.indiasafe.com

CMYK
WHITE PAPER
Rather, SDN should be treated as a way of thinking about network control. The SDN way of thinking recognizes two key points: 1. Individual network nodes do not have a broad view of what is happening in the network. Therefore the control of forwarding decisions in the network (commonly referred to as ‘the control plane’) cannot be entirely left in the hands of individual network nodes. Instead some, or all, of the network control plane must be put into the hands of centralized software applications which can take input from multiple network elements and exert influence on the forwarding decisions of multiple network nodes at once. 2. Configuring and monitoring network nodes as a set of discrete individuals is unnecessarily inefficient. If the network nodes can be managed more as a distributed forwarding fabric, then significant efficiencies can be gained, and range of network management activities can be automated. It is very important to consider how the SDN approach to network control and network management can be applied to the current challenges in enterprise networking.
Controlling the control plane
T
he self-organizing protocols that have provided the characteristic distributed control plane in data networks for the past few decades are very well suited to tasks like removing network loops, distributing routes, controlling resilient links and authenticating connected devices. But they are not well suited to activities that need a wider over-view of the network, or end-toend management of data flows.
For example, the distributed control plane is not well suited to: ● Measuring the aggregate data transmission rate between two sectors of a network, and determining that the traffic can all be re-routing to a new path, so that under-utilized ports and switches can be taken down to save power. ● Receiving notification that an important video conference is about to begin, and will pass through the same bottleneck point as a series of large file transfers, and therefore rerouting the file transfers away from the bottleneck. ● Moving VPN connections off to a cloud-based service, or back again, when the volume of e-mail transactions from remote mobile users rises above or falls below a given threshold. ● Applying network-wide throttling to a particular traffic type, due to detection of a virus infection on a newly attached mobile device. The SDN approach can be applied to enterprise networking by developing applications that: ● Receive feeds of traffic sampling data, and analyze the data to identify traffic patterns that represent threats or overuse of policy-controlled online sites like Facebook or YouTube. Then, automatically update network node operating parameters, so they block or throttle that traffic. ● Recognize when an authenticated user, connected wirelessly to the network, roams to different sectors of the network. Upon recognizing this user’s change of location, any policies applied to their connection point, or dynamic configuration required to provide them access to certain services, can be automatically updated October 2015
57
in the relevant network nodes. ● Monitor the load on Network Function Virtualization (NFV) instances, such as Intrusion Detection System (IDS) services, Virtual Private Network (VPN) controllers and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) accelerators; add or remove instances as appropriate, and update network nodes to route the right traffic to the right NFV instances.
Automating management
T
he model of manually managing network nodes as discrete units cannot remain viable in the current operating environment. Network management must evolve, so that changes can be rolled out more rapidly, and problems can be solved efficiently. Applying SDN to network management involves three main strands of development: 1. Embedding more management intelligence into the network nodes themselves, so they can actively participate in a unified network management framework, rather than being passively managed. 2. Enhancing the analytic information that network nodes can provide, so that a deep picture of the network’s state can be accessed at any given time. 3. Creating applications that can work with the network nodes’ embedded management intelligence to simplify and automate network management tasks. The scope of operation of these applications will grow as the level of analytics they gather from the network increases. Reworking network management by implementing these lines of development will create networks in which: ● New nodes are automatically configured as soon as they are attached to

the network. ● The configuration changes required to support new services are rolled out across the network from a single console. ● Troubleshooting is aided by the ability to drill down into detailed network state information, and to step through a replay of the way the network’s state changed over a specified time period.
Allied Telesis initiatives in enterprise SDN
A
llied Telesis are a leader in the evolution of enterprise networking. For three decades, as enterprise networking has developed, Allied Telesis equipment and solutions have been at the leading edge of progress. The company is presently working on several fronts to implement the solutions that will meet the current and future challenges in this sector.
Allied Telesis Management Framework
T
he Allied Telesis initiatives have been spearheaded by advances in the field of network management automation. Allied Telesis recognize that the growing operating cost of network management is an almost universal issue for organizations around the world, and have focused significant innovative energy on creating a framework for automation of
network management. The result of this work is Allied Telesis Management Framework (AMF), a combination of embedded management intelligence and a central controller which automates such tasks as: ● Adding a new switch to a network. ● Replacing a failed switch. ● Installing a software upgrade across the network. ● Backing up configuration and software images from network nodes. ● Updating configuration on multiple network nodes at once. This framework unifies the network nodes into a single management plane that overlays the network to provide the automated functionality. As new nodes are added to the network, the management plane is immediately expanded to include them. The plane extends seamlessly across WAN links or VPNs to include remote sites, and unstaffed locations.
Openflow
A
llied Telesis have integrated Openflow into the AlliedWare Plus Operating System, to provide an Openflow API on the x-series Ethernet switches. This standards-based SDN API enables the switches to be controlled by any SDN controller that uses Openflow as its southbound communication method.
Future directions
B
uilding on the foundation provided by AMF and the Openflow implementation, Allied Telesis will continue to evolve their enterprise SDN solutions. The unique integration of an embedded management framework and a standards-based SDN API, along with planned Network Function Virtualization (NFV) offerings, will provide a October 2015
58
strong platform on which to move enterprise networks forward. The directions in which the Allied Telesis solutions will be looking to take enterprise networks are: ● Complete unified network management of wired, wireless, LAN and WAN components, using AMF. ● Cloud-based network management control. ● Integration of network management, SDN apps and user identity servers. ● Inclusion of NFV components into the unified management and controlplane solution. ● Extension of integrated management out to new classes of Ethernet-connected devices, to provide a coherent interface onto the ‘Intranet of Things.’
Conclusion
I
n the early days of networking the focus was on delivering reliable connectivity with consistent performance to ensure that users were able to access services when they needed to. Today, networks – particularly wired networks – are extremely reliable, deliver performance in the order of Gigabits or tens of Gigabits per second to the user and are packed with features to improve reliability and security. The challenges of today are no longer around how to deliver access and performance, but rather are focused on how to keep up with the dynamic nature of technology environments, how to simplify infrastructure, and how to do more with the limited resources within an organization. SDN, AMF and Openflow are important technologies that will enable organizations to overcome these challenges today and will continue to evolve to overcome the challenges of tomorrow.

surveillance system is in one box. Small business owners get a highly discreet four-camera surveillance system with easy and secure remote monitoring and management, even from mobile devices.”
AXIS F34 Surveillance System
A
XIS F34 Surveillance System includes one AXIS F34 Main Unit with an external power supply and four thumb-sized AXIS F1004 Sensor Units that can be discreetly recess- or surfacemounted on ceilings and walls using the included accessories. Also supplied are two AXIS Surveillance micro SDXC card 64 GB (with SD card adaptors) that are specifically engineered to handle continuous overwriting for lasting performance. The cards are compatible with AXIS F34 Main Unit’s built-in SD card slots for local storage of recordings and enable the system to run independently without the need for an external PC or a recording device for day-to-day operation. Another important component of the system is the use of the freely downloadable video management software, AXIS Camera Companion 3.10, for easy and secure remote monitoring and management from any device with the software application. The system operates efficiently with two Axis 64 GB cards that allow one to two week’s worth of video recording
to be retained before overwriting takes place. Recording and storage are optimized, thanks to smart programs and technologies in AXIS F34 Main Unit and AXIS Camera Companion 3.10 that enable: ● Automatic configuration of AXIS F34 Main Unit for recording based on video motion detection. ● Support for Video Motion Detection 3, a video analytic program that has a false alarm filter to ignore motion such as swaying trees and small animals so that it can reliably detect moving objects of interest. ● Axis’ Zipstream technology, a more efficient implementation of the H.264 video encoder that can lower bandwidth and storage use by an average of 50% or more for many surveillance scenarios.
AXIS F Series
A
XIS F34 is part of a series of products that is based on a divided network camera concept, where the camera is split into a sensor unit – made up of a lens and image sensor with a cable – and a main unit, which is the body of the camera. The cable connects the sensor unit with the main unit and gives installers the flexibility to mount the small sensor unit discreetly or in tight places, while the main unit can be placed elsewhere where there is space. Four-chan-
nel main units such as AXIS F34 can connect to four sensor units at a time. With AXIS F34 Surveillance System, the four AXIS F1004 Sensor Units can be installed in four different indoor locations up to 15 m (49 ft.) away from the AXIS F34 Main Unit. Since AXIS F1004 supports 720p resolution, the main unit can simultaneously stream full frame rate HDTV 720p videos from the four connected sensor units through its one Ethernet port. When AXIS F34 Main Unit is used with 1080p AXIS F Sensor Units, the main unit can stream 1080p videos at 12.5/ 15 frames per second (50/ 60 Hz) or 720p videos at full frame rate (25/ 30fps) from each channel. AXIS F34 also supports quad view streaming, which combines four separate views from the connected sensor units into one for simultaneous viewing. Besides Axis’ Zipstream technology and Video Motion Detection 3, AXIS F34 Main Unit supports active tampering alarm and third-party applications based on the AXIS Camera Application Platform. The main unit can be powered using Power over Ethernet or an external power supply. AXIS F34 Main Unit is available now for sale. AXIS F34 Surveillance System, and the 3.10 version of AXIS Camera Companion will be available in October.

Greater flexibility
G
-Core 1.3 provides more flexibility in the truest sense of the word: When using fish-eye cameras such as the G-Cam/ EHC 3180, the new viewer-integrated dewarping function supports complete flexibility at the display of the images. Fisheye cameras deliver – similar to a peephole – perfect all-round visibility,
but quite distorted: the scene looks like seen through a big bubble. With dewarping, the currently selected screen area is converted into the original dimensions for the viewer. The user controls the view by panning and tilting, or scene is displayed in multiple viewers in a panorama or quad view. This works not just in the live stream, but also for recorded images.
To provide as much flexibility as possible, the number of interfaces to third party systems in G-Core is continually expanding, New interfaces are for example to access control provider Lenel, to the intercom systems from Commend and Schneider Intercom or to the perimeter detection systems from Southwest Microwave.

World’s First Self-Contained, HDR Surveillance Camera for Banking ATMs MegaPX ATM camera delivers sharp megapixel images and compact, no-shift design
arch Networks® has introduced the MegaPX ATM camera. The MegaPX ATM camera is the industry’s first self-contained, covert IP camera with High Dynamic Range (HDR) image clarity. Purpose-built for easy installation in leading automated teller machines (ATMs), the camera captures highly-detailed video in all lighting conditions, enabling banking investigators and law enforcement to clearly identify faces and other distinguishing features. It is ONVIF Profile S compliant and can be deployed seamlessly to provide the high-quality ATM video evidence many financial institutions are seeking, to fill a gap in their complete banking surveillance solution. “With ATM card data theft at the highest rate seen in two decades in the United States alone, banking organizations are relying more heavily than ever on IP video technologies that can provide clear video evidence to accelerate investigations,” said Net Payne,
M
Chief Marketing Officer, March Networks, “This new camera offers financial institutions a way to capture better video at ATMs and advances an area of the banking surveillance ecosystem which, until now, has not kept pace with technology improvements.” The MegaPX ATM camera combines HDR and exceptional low-light performance to capture clear video in high-contrast lighting, such as the direct sunlight and near-dark conditions ATM vestibules and drive-thrus experience at different times of the day. Available with a 2.8mm standard lens or 3.7mm pinhole lens, the camera’s wide field-of-view records ATM users from the waist up rather than just capturing faces to provide more comprehensive video evidence. In addition, an innovative feature auto-corrects images recorded behind the tinted glass enclosures present in many ATMs. Distinct from other covert cameras with separate sensor units, the MegOctober 2015

The latest release, DVM R600, will enable organizations to more efficiently manage their security system with enhanced mobile capabilities and voice command, and mitigate business risk via support for current IT platforms. Major updates to DVM include enhanced system access and usability, which are designed to improve operator efficiency and reaction time. Security personnel now can access high-definition, full-frame-rate video on a mobile device, for example, enabling continuous monitoring (recording/ playback) from almost any location. Operators can also control DVM using voice commands to more easily manage multiple video feeds and request near-real-time system updates. “Every second is important to an organization when an incident occurs and security staff must take immediate action if there is a threat,” said John Rajchert, President of Honeywell Building Solutions, “The latest update to DVM helps operators quickly identify and react to an issue to help mitigate the impact to safety and business continuity – no matter if they are in front of a central
workstation or on the opposite side of a campus, connected with a smartphone.” Along with an improved user experience, DVM R600 promotes IT integration and compliance with support for current Microsoft operating systems and databases, including Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1, Internet Explorer 11 and SQL Server 2014. (Windows Server 2003 is not recommended because security systems running on the platform could be vulnerable to breaches since it’s no longer supported by Microsoft, as reported, and will not receive further updates.) In addition, DVM R600 allows customers to deploy and intelligently group multiple backup servers to boost system robustness, which helps protect surveillance systems from failures. Other DVM upgrades focus on: Extensible platform speeding data collection: Security operators can export footage from multiple camera feeds in unison to streamline incident response and workflow, and quickly collect and archive forensic data in the event of an incident. Dynamic adapter installation, video analytics, edge storage, camera feature support, device capability discovery and video wall integration provide higher flexibility to October 2015

customers to add new custom features. Reducing storage requirements: Dynamic recording leads to reduction in cost up to 40% by enabling the system to capture critical video under higher frame rates, while collecting less important footage at lower frame rates, trimming storage requirements, reducing network bandwidth requirement and allowing edge recording playback from NVRs and DVRs. It is easy to engineer and leverages the full capability of video encoding devices that support multiple streams. “Our surveillance system has always been robust, utilizing hundreds of cameras throughout both our facilities to promote visitor safety and security,” said Tom Owen, Operations Manager for Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions, which manages the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in Australia, “However, the IT infrastructure required large storage capacity and as many as 15 standalone PC servers.

Cold Disc Technology Introducing high performance, high reliability Video and Audio recording with unlimited storage, and greatly reduced power requirements
Introduction
T
he Xtralis CDT (patent pending) system architecture is a design to guarantee optimal operation of high volume storage and archiving for video/ audio streams originated by different data sources. The architecture is specially suited to environments where sequential writing operations surpass large reading requests.
V3500 system architecture
T
he Xtralis V3500 system is a recording system based on CDT consisting of a number of parallel storage channels connected to the network via a dual Ethernet connection. The collection of channels form a storage cluster which handles the pulling of the connected devices using an individual data stream. The clustering software con-
trols an auto loadbalancing over the different channels in order to equalise performance over the channels. The dual channel Ethernet port connection permits the system architecture a simultaneous connection to two network switches reducing risk of network switch failure. In the example above the 4 channels each consisting in a network connected server unit with two storage boxes are in mutual communication and operating as a cluster. The second example shows the same cluster connected to the network showing the individual load distribution. Storage boxes are interfaced over a SAS bus to the server in a daisy chain connection. Each of the storage boxes are JBOD type boxes allowing the server full individual control to each disc. By considerOctober 2015

ing each individual disc as an autonomous storage device the disc becomes an exclusive storage unit. This allows each disc to be removed and replaced by another formatted disc. To ensure data integrity and the highest possible security, Xtralis encrypt all data on the disc. The data encryption allows disc reading in any V3500 storage box protected by an encryption key. To prepare a disc for storage a proprietary formatting process has to be performed. This formatting allows writing of data streams to the disk in a highly secure mode and keeping individual track of origin data and life time.

he recorder stores proprietary formatted video streams onto each disc and as this process is an almost ex-

T clusive write operation this minimizes the need for hard disc head movement. This optimizes throughput as it allows writing to one or several discs simultaneously. When a hard disc reaches almost full status, another disc with available space will be started to spin up under command from the management system in the server. When the disc is full, it will get a spin down instruction. Spin-up/ spin-down of the hard discs prevents premature mechanical failure, reduces electric power and air cooling consumption. This also makes the disc cartridge easily swappable and provides for a high volume archiving with larger capacity than any other existing medium. The V3500 can work as a single or dual channel system and since the hard discs of the recorder are hot swappable it is ideal for use in environments where even petabytes of storage are required. CDT can provide up to a 10 times increase in MTBF reliability and a massive reduction in power requirement.
Archiving
T
he archiving system is an integrated part of the Xtralis management platform. The archiving software stores in it’s database all starts/ stops of recording streams on a V3500 disc making the link between time, camera and disc a unique id. The disc unique id is generated in the formatting process and by optionally attaching as a label or RFID tag to the physical disc cartridge.
The system provides the operator with a search facility and will either offer the stream live on screen or they will be informed on which disc(s) the images can be found by referring to the unique id of the hard disc cartridge. Reading archived discs is possible using an access-key to decrypt the disc, providing that any defined storage lifetime rules to read the corresponding stream have not expired. One of the largest benefits in using the V3500 method of storage is that the recorder has only one stream of data coming from the network and recorded on to the discs. Alternative methods of external archiving require a reverse large stream of data going out of the recorder towards the archiving medium. This last stream will conflict or reduce the normal network bandwidth and demand additional hardware to archive.
Duplicated recording
A
V3500 cluster is able to split camera streams over two separate channels providing redundant recording with the highest reliability that can be obtained avoiding any single point of failure. In the unlikely event of a disc failing whilst writing is being performed, the redundant disc in the other channel of the cluster continues storing the same video stream. The video review screen will report dual storage and ask the user to select between recoded images. Therefore failure of a recorded image can be retrieved on the second storage disc. October 2015
78
he V3500 server and storage system is able to store video streams coded in MJPEG, MPEG4 and H.264 from different sources simultaneously. Since advanced video coding (MPEG4, H.264) reduces storage volumes by a factor of more than 4 and 7 respectively, it is essential that the best possible recording rates and quality continue over the full recording period. Modern cameras allow multi-stream compatibility which allows storage from the same camera in high frame rate with low resolution to combine with a simultaneous stream of high resolution images in a lower frame rate. In the former example one stream can be used for short time storage when the other stream stores a longer time and is used for archiving.
V3500 hardware
I
n most cases the V3500 would be provided as a complete hardware and software solution. However OEM opportunities exist for creation of a storage channel with specific servers and a JBOD type storage box. The individual handling of each disc as a storage medium makes for unrivalled versatility in the choice of discs. An installation can be operating with discs of different capacity in the same box and even with different technology as long as the storage box manufacturer can accept them.
V3500 health monitoring
T
he V3500 software monitors activity, fault detection and performance per channel making the need to install SNMP unnecessary. The V3500 controls and reports alarm conditions to the control centre and disc failures are reported without delay.

CDT compared to RAID technology
R
AID disc technology is the most commonly used storage architecture for hard disc arrays. RAID systems give a good performance where reading access in a random way is prominent, however video and audio recording are almost exclusively a writing operation.
A major disadvantage of RAID configurations is the risk of data loss or in loss of throughput during an error reestablishing operation or on multiple failures of hard discs when the disc lifetime is nearing the MTBF (failure) period of the discs. The CDT technology optimizes disk writing by sequential writing to one or several disks, keeping each
individual video stream to each individual disk. This operation maximizes the system throughput as well as optimizing the disc lifetime and power consumption. Even in large systems often only a few of the discs are in operation at the same time which dramatically increases the lifetime of the discs by up to x10 compared to RAID storage.

Try Your Surveillance Video By Dan Cremins – March Networks Director, Product Management
I
f your business has used security cameras for a number of years, you’ve probably seen several evolutions in video surveillance technology. Some of the more recent include: the introduction of HD, multi-megapixel and 360 cameras; mobile access to video using smartphones and tablets; and, of course, the appearance of intelligent software solutions that combine video and other data to address security and non-security related applications.
Non-security applications – sometimes referred to as video-based business intelligence – are opening up amazing new possibilities for organizations to better understand how to improve their overall business. By using different combinations of video analytics and transactional data together in unique ways, they enable a range of applications that extend far beyond just security. Organizations can now analyze performance trends, calculate conOctober 2015

version rates and even improve marketing – all by using their existing video surveillance technology. Of course, loss prevention and fraud detection continue to also be key benefits of these systems, making them incredibly compelling total solutions. They can help you maximize the investments you’ve already made in video surveillance by providing distinct advantages to other facets of your business. To help you understand more, here’s

three ways your retail or banking organization can improve your performance and profitability by integrating your video with your transaction data and analytics:
Faster loss/ fraud detection and investigations
M
any retailers, banks and credit unions are already using video-based software applications to combine their surveillance video with recorded audio and transaction data. This integration enables faster loss detection and investigation capabilities by enabling users to search on exceptions based on transaction type or amount and click through to the associated video to further review suspicious events. But what if the software could do its own investigation and present a listing of suspicious activity directly to investigators, so they didn’t have to search? This kind of capability is possible by integrating analytics with transaction data and surveillance video in certain scenarios. For example, by integrating a presence detection analytic with ATM transaction data, and comparing the information together, a software solution can identify when someone is standing at an ATM for a set time period without conducting a transaction. This could be indicative of an ATM skimmer installation. In a retail environment, this same kind of software can identify other suspicious activity, such as when transactions are taking place but no customer is present in front of the point-of-sale (POS). This could be a sign of employee theft or sweethearting, where employees give away unauthorized discounts or
merchandise to friends or family. Different types of video analytics can also identify when someone is standing in front of a high-value merchandise display for an unusually long period, which again may indicate potential shoplifting.
Better customer service
T
hese same solutions can help financial institutions and retailers improve customer service, optimize staffing and identify where more training is needed. Above, we discussed using video analytics to identify potential shoplifting, but someone standing in front of a display for an extended period of time could also be a customer waiting for assistance. Video can help reveal gaps in customer service so they can be corrected. It can also help banks and retailers understand more about their customers’ interests. A people counting analytic married to POS data in an easy-to-use reporting dashboard allows retailers to calculate conversion rates to determine how many shoppers become buyers. By running site-by-site comparisons of this data, organizations can determine which locations are over and underperforming A queue length monitoring analytic

Increased marketing and promotional success
M
arketing probably isn’t a group you think could benefit from surveillance video; however that perspective is changing thanks to integrated analytics and software reporting tools. Using dwell time analytics to determine when a person is standing in an area for a set amount of time, marketers can determine customer interest level in new merchandising or in high-cost end caps and displays. Further information can be gleaned by comparing people counting data to determine what percentage of people that entered a building paused to look at an area of interest. If a display doesn’t seem to be succeeding in a few locations, or is exceeding expectations in others, they can quickly review the video to check how it’s been set up or positioned.
More than just security
R
emember, video surveillance – when combined in the right way with other data like transactions and analytics – can offer a lot more than just core security. Loss and fraud prevention are key benefits, but customer service, operations and marketing can all be improved as well with the right kind of intelligent solution.

Counter-UAV System from Airbus Protects Large Installations and Events from Illicit Intrusion Sensor Data Fusion offers countermeasures against small drones
A
irbus Defence and Space has developed a Counter-UAV System which detects illicit intrusions of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) over critical areas at long ranges and offers electronic countermeasures minimizing the risk of collateral damage. “All over the world, incidents with universally available small drones have revealed a security gap with regards to critical installations such as military barracks, airports or nuclear plants,” says Thomas Müller, head of the Electronics business line at Airbus Defence and Space, “As a specialist in defence electronics, we have all the technologies in our portfolio and the integration knowledge which are needed to set up a quick-response protection system with
extremely low false alarm rates.” The system offers very high effectiveness by combining sensor data from different sources with latest data fusion, signal analysis and jamming technologies. It uses operational radars, infrared cameras and direction finders from Airbus Defence and Space’s portfolio to identify the drone and assess its threat potential at ranges between 5 and 10 kilometers. Based on an extensive threat library and realtime analysis of control signals a jammer then interrupts the link between drone and pilot and/ or its navigation. Furthermore, the direction finder tracks the position of the pilot who subsequently can be arrested. Due to the Smart Responsive Jamming TechnolOctober 2015

ogy developed by Airbus Defence and Space, the jamming signals are blocking only the relevant frequencies used to operate the drone while other frequencies in the vicinity remain operational. Since the jamming technology contains versatile receiving and transmitting capabilities, more sophisticated measures like remote control classification and GPS spoofing can be utilized as well. This allows effective and specific jamming and also a controlled takeover of the UAV. The Counter-UAV System has been tested extensively at Airbus Defence and Space’s own premises and during customer presentations in Germany and France. Depending on the required configuration, an operational system would be available from mid-2016.

major player in the world of video surveillance, driving the security industry’s move into the digital era and redefining industry expectations about what a video surveillance system can be – and do. When co-founders John Blem and Henrik Friborg Jacobsen established the business, they saw an opportunity: for software that could monitor, record, and retrieve video images in digital format. This was a paradigm shift from the analog world of CCTV. Lars Thinggaard came on board in 2003 as Milestone’s President and CEO, bringing with him an experienced entrepreneurial background and distinct spirit of open-style Scandinavian leadership which has guided the company to the top of its market. This book is Lars’ story, and the story of Milestone. ‘Business Magnetism’ is about uniting a fragmented industry around a unique vision. It’s about the leadership required to bring together a multinational business ecosystem, and the courage needed to adapt and change in the face of turbulent global economies. It is about looking to the future, learning from the past, and being open to new ideas. This book is the story of a small, ambitious business flourishing at the start of the 21st century through leadership, openness, and partnership.
“The way Lars tells the Milestone story is a valuable guide for entrepreneurs and everyone connected with business start-ups. Anybody contemplating venture capital should read this book first,” says Giuseppe Zocco, Co-founder and Partner of Index Ventures, Switzerland. “It has been a privilege to witness Lars’ unique and highly effective management style. In this book he shares some of his secrets and it has become obligatory reading for all the entrepreneurs I am working with!” says Tony Zappala, Highland Capital Partners Europe. “I appreciated reading this great book and Lars Thinggaard’s insightful views on IP video, partnership and how to build a business ecosystem. Open platforms are certainly in the Milestone Systems DNA and something I really believe in. This book describes how the industry has benefited from the open approach,” states Martin Gren, Founder, Director New Projects, Axis Communications. “This book demonstrates how unlimited imagination can lead to a big change in the physical security industry.
Lars and the co-founders’ insights drove a unique vision for the future that was not achieved by others. You will be amazed at how they bring the players together to grow a successful business with the ecosystem,” says Cheolkyo Kim, CEO of Samsung Techwin. “The highlight of the book is the leadership compass, defining measurable behaviors. I’m not sure I have seen anyone else that has done this to the same extent. I will use this at our next leadership meeting,” says Phil Aronson, CEO and President of ASG (Aronson Security Group, Inc.). During Lars Thinggaard’s first decade as CEO, Milestone Systems’ revenue increased more than ten-fold. Today, Milestone is a global leader in the video management software industry, acquired by the Fortune 500 concern Canon in June of 2014. He states, “My career has been dedicated to the importance of leadership, and I am always looking for refreshing and novel approaches. ‘Business Magnetism’ describes the drive and flexibility needed to lead a company that is innovative and independent.”

ULIS Targets Outdoor Leisure Market with Pico384 Gen2
Growing consumer interest in nature observation raises demand for night vision sensors better designed for the higher speed production of thermal cameras
U
LIS, a leading manufacturer of thermal image sensors for commercial and military applications has launched Pico384 Gen2, one of the first thermal image sensor designed in accordance with JEDEC standards for Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly. This means that ULIS’ sensors are more compatible with standard industrial integration and handling processes for high volume production, such as robotic pick and place and oven reflow. As a Surface Mount Device (SMD), Pico384 Gen2 enables thermal camera makers to further automate their assembly lines, lower the cost of integration and thereby boost production. The need to produce higher volumes of Personal Vision Systems (PVS) stems from a growing demand for thermal imaging equipment used for outdoor leisure activities. The demand is up by 24% per year, until 2020 (Uncooled Infrared Imaging Technology & Market Trends report, Yole Développe-
ment, June 2015). Pico384 Gen2 is suitable for outdoor leisure applications such as nature observation, wildlife watching, tracking game, camping and hiking. With QVGA resolution (384x288 pixels) and exceptional image quality, users of thermal equipment designed with Pico384 Gen2 will be able to observe animals in complete darkness from a distance of several hundred meters. “Pico384 Gen2 with Surface Mount Technology capabilities has overcome one of the camera industry’s major hurdles in producing thermal imaging equipment in high volume,” said Sebastien Tinnes, Senior Product Manager at ULIS, “Since it also uses standard fully digital interfaces and an ambient temperature calibration process, camera makers have fewer integration steps to manage. This means they can develop thermal equipment within reduced timeframes, thus speed their time to market. We anticipate a positive response to Pico384 Gen2 from the October 2015
97
outdoor leisure market. We also believe that this new product will help pave the way towards lowering the cost of thermal cameras, opening up new applications in other professional and leisure markets.” Pico384 Gen2 offers low power consumption (<220mW with integrated ADC and DACs) for improved battery life. This makes the Pico384 Gen2 attractive for other portable applications like thermography, firefighting and surveillance. ULIS says customers will benefit from the simplicity and cost-efficiency this brings, both of which are necessary to increase the production of thermal image cameras from tens of thousands to several hundreds of thousands of units per year. ULIS’ Pico384 Gen2 will be displayed at the China International Optoelectronic Expo (CIOE) in Shenzhen (China), one of the largest shows of its kind in the world and celebrating its 17th year. An ONVIF PTZ camera can be controlled by connecting an RS485 PTZ controller to the ANT-36000. Two way audio is supported as either G711 or AAC high quality audio. The ANT-36000 is powered by 12volts or PoE and consumes only 4 watts. A watchdog timer will allow the ANT-36000 to reboot to operating mode in any event unlike a PC running a VMS for example. Housed in a small case 120mm x 120mm x 30mm the ANT-36000 is ideal to use as standalone decoder where no operator control is required. Available from stock the ANT-36000 is available at under US$700.

T
o support global expansion, Evolving Systems wanted to reduce reliance on manned guarding at local sites, standardise disparate access control and security systems, and deliver a scalable solution to support future growth. A key challenge was to secure buyin from stakeholders with different needs in the UK, France, Dubai and India for a single unified solution. Following detailed risk studies and feasibility trials, ISD Tech designed and de-
livered a Brivo Systems’ cloud-based solution to give Evolving Systems centralised control of its access and security functions. The ability to integrate access control with live viewing, recording and assessment of video streams was precisely the kind of future-proofing stipulated in the brief. The ISD Tech solution has given Evolving Systems user-friendly centralised control via a desktop or mobile Internet browser making it easy to set schedules and view live graphic reports. With dramatically improved situation awareness of events across its global estate, the Evolving Systems team can immediately respond to actual or perceived threats based on the most accurate, up-to-date information. Exploiting the system’s powerful intelligence and remote monitoring capacity while reducing manpower costs has produced major savings with no fall-off in security and safety levels. Additional benefits include scope to use real-time access control reports for fire mustering. Other departments such as human resources can operate more efficiently by exchanging data with the new control software without the need for additional re-keying.
