A rare set of seven maps showing the Caribbean region, executed in detailed engraving and ne hand coloring. The maps an interesting compilation of early voyages of exploration by the Spanish in mid America. Each map is decorated with a title cartouche, distance scale, and a finely engraved scenery such as European merchants encountering local inhabitants, military and naval battles, fisherman, dolphins and a volcano.

Map of southern Mexico and part of Central America down to Nicaragua that was designed to illustrate the expedition of Spanish Conquistador Gil Gonzalez Davila. From 1522-24, Gonzalez made his way through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras, baptizing Natives and acquiring sizeable amounts of pearls and gold. The title cartouche includes a Native with a bow with others seining for fish.

A map of central Mexico that was designed to illustrate the expedition of Hernan Cortes (here called Ferdinand Cortes), a Spanish Conquistador who conquered Mexico circa 1520 and caused the fall of the Aztec Empire. Interesting map of Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Colombia, illustrating the report of the voyage of Sebastian deOcampo. In 1508, de Ocampo mapped the entire coastline of Cuba for the first time and determined that Cuba was an island, not part of the mainland. The map is decorated with many great details and includes rivers, Lake Parime with Manoa el Dorado, and settlements. Relief is shown pictorially. Decorative cartouche shows native American offering pearls and gold to European soldiers and men are diving in the ocean.

Striking map of Hispaniola with a decorative cartouche and compass rose. The map was used to illustrate the Dutch translation of the account of Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the New World.



A map of Florida, the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean, centered on Cuba. The map was prepared to illustrate the Dutch translation of the accounts of Francisco Hernandez de Cordova in the New World, in the second decade of the 16th Century.



A map of Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama. The map was used to illustrate the Dutch translations of the account of the voyage of Cortes and Davila in Central America. Gil Gonzales D'Avila accompanied Pedro Arias D'Avila to the new world on his voyage of 1514. After travelling north to Darien and founding Panama City, Gil Gonzales D'Avila was sent north to explore the region that would become Nicaragua, etc. Vander Aa was one of the most prolific compilers of information on the early explorations to America, Asia and Africa. In total, the work reached 130 narratives, which were offered in 28 8vo volumes. A finely executed copper plate engraving with decorative cartouche. Minor abrasion near Tortuga, but barely noticeable.

Detailed map of the region bounded by Haiti and Puerto Rico in the north and Venezuela in the south, extending to the Windward Islands. Prepared to illustrate the narrative of Garcia de Loyasa. Includes a pictorial title cartouche showing a Spaniard stabbing a person within a decorative tent.
