English Sea Chart of the Singapore Straits ~ Year 1787

Navigational chart printed in London in the year 1787 for those who were traversing the waters of the Singapore Straits. The map features depth soundings and ocean hazards to aid sailors in their journey. The map includes two sea tracks, the track from Malacca to Pulo Aore, and the track of the East Indiaman The Bute in 1764-65. We have been unable to find an example of the present chart appearing at auction or in a dealer’s catalogue. We only found a different edition of this Thomas Jeffreys chart in the collection of the national library of Australia, and the National Library of Singapore holds a 1794 edition.

Singapore, Malaysia, and Sumatra ~ Year 1687

Extremely Rare Map of the Kingdom of Siam

A historically important map of Southeast Asia, issued just prior to the Siamese Revolution of 1688, which henceforth restricted European activities in the kingdom. The map extends from the southern part of the Indochinese Peninsula through Malaya, to the northern coastline of Java and the eastern part of Borneo. The adornment of the map with a large elephant, making up the title cartouche, makes this map a favourite among collectors.

A set of 65 photographs compiled, described in handwriting and owned by the 12th Governor of the Straits Settlement, Sir Frederick Aloysius Weld.

An exceptionally rare and unique collection of photographs, compiled by Sir Frederick Aloysius Weld, the 12th Governor of the Straits Settlements (May 1880 - October 1887). Taken approximately one month (June 1880) into his tenure as governor, this album offers a rare look into nineteenth-century colonial Singapore and parts of the Malay States. All the handwriting under the photos is by Sir Frederick Weld himself. Many of the photographs in the are believed to be unique, indicating that they were likely taken and developed especially for Sir Frederick Aloysius Weld, making it one of the rarest complete albumen photograph albums on colonial Singapore known to still exist.

Singapore Sea Chart ~ Year 1857

An extremely rare nautical chart or "maritime map" of the Strait of Singapore and the southern part of the Malacca Strait. Made for the British East India Company, this is one of the first charts to accurately map these heavily trafficked but treacherous straits. The chart covers the Malay peninsula roughly from Penang (Prince of Wales Island) to the island of Singapore and from the Sumatran coast to the China Sea. It features sixteen profile views as well as countless depth soundings, especially around the southern part of the Malacca Strait in the vicinity of Singapore. This detailed chart is very suitable for framing.

Early sea chart of the Strait of Malacca showing the southern part of Malaysia, the island of Singapore and the eastern part of Sumatra, created by the greatest French hydrographer of the eighteenth century, Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. The chart contains several illustrated profile views of land as seen from the straits. These views are centred at the top of the chart, providing important context for original viewers and adding to the chart’s visual interest today. The illustrations are notated with their place names and navigation directions from known landmarks, making their locations easily traceable on the chart.

Singapore, Two Rare Early Views ~ Year 1835

Published in the year 1835 in Paris, in a publication describing the visit of Laplace to Singapore. Laplace sailed eastwards around the world between 1830 and 1833 on the orders of the King of France, Louis-Philippe, to attempt to re-establish French influence in Indochina and to give support to French traders in the ports visited. Singapore was the first port of call after the Straits of Malacca, and La Favorite spent five days here between 17 and 25 August 1830. Singapore and the Kingdom of Siam ~ Year 1686

This is the most important and collectable map of the Kingdom of Siam, Singapore, Sumatra and Malaysia published in the 17th Century. A unique collector's item, and a cornerstone map in any high-end Southeast Asia map collection. The map depicts the arrival of the first French embassy to the Kingdom of Siam, in what is now Thailand. Dechaussé dedicates the map to the Chevalier de Chaumont, who led the delegation. Dechaussé's map depicts the route from just west of the Sunda Straits, through the Banca Straits, then past Bintang Island and up the east side of the peninsula via the Gulf of Siam.

Singapore Nautical Chart, Large French Map ~ Year 1847

An extremely rare nautical chart of Singapore, issued under the patronage of Louis Philippe I of France. This chart stands at the forefront of scientific mapping of the region. The map covers from the southern tip of the Malay peninsula to the coast of Sumatra and from (roughly) Pulau Rangsnag to Pauau Mapur (Panjang). It is centered on the Bantam Islands, including Batnam, Pulau Bulan, and Pulau Brintan. A unique opportunity for the Singapore collector, very suitable for framing.

Hornbill Birds Set ~ Circa 1875

Set of three hand-colored hornbill lithographs. These highly accurate and beautifully observed plates were published over 150 years ago in London. These folio lithographs are from Daniel Giraud Elliot's "A Monograph of the Bucerotidae, or Family of the Hornbills". The work was published in New York by Taylor & Francis of London between 1877 and 1882. The originally hand-colored lithographs were printed by M. & N. Hanhart. John Gerard Keulemans composed the plates and they were hand-colored by Mr. Smith.

Singapore Nautical Chart ~ Year 1852

A large size Chart, issued under the patronage of Louis Philippe I of France. The map covers from the southern tip of the Malay peninsula to the coast of Sumatra and from (roughly) Panjore to Tanjong Bon and eastward as far as the Kepulauan Riau and Riau Islands. The focus of the map is the newly surveyed maritime routes south of Singapore, via the straits of Durian and Rhio (Riouw), towards the Dutch trading centers in Jakarta and the Pepper Ports of Sumatra. Very suitable for framing.

Coconut Tree ~ Set of three ~ Year 1693

Decorative set of 3 early botanical prints of the famous Coconut tree, labeled in Latin, Malayalam, Arabic, and Sanskrit. Published in the year 1693 in Hortus Malabaricus (Garden of Malabar), the earliest comprehensive published work on the flora of Asia and the tropics. The term "coconut" (or the archaic "cocoanut") can refer to the whole coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which botanically is a drupe, not a nut. The name comes from the old Portuguese word coco, meaning "head" or "skull", after the three indentations on the coconut shell that resemble facial features.

Map of Singapore Island by Sir Stamford Raffles ~ Year 1830

A superb and rare early map of Singapore with detailed information derived from Raffles observations. With only 1500 printed in the year 1830, this is a unique collectors map and a must-have in any map collection on Singapore. This very unique map was published in the Memoir of the Life and Public Services of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, F.R.S. &c. John Murray, London, 1830. The memoir itself is a glowing and detailed biography by Raffles’ second wife, Sophia Hull (1786-1858).

Singapore Photographs, ca. 1880 - 1910

Singapore was a popular subject for the burgeoning photography scene in the Indies. We are featuring a series of photographs, many by the famous photography atelier G. R. Lambert & Co. The German-born Gustav Richard Lambert opened the shop in 1867 and grew to become one of the most successful photography studios in the Indies with branches in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Deli (Sumatra,) and Medan. Lambert’s photographs are much admired and sought after by collectors not only for their historical value but also the classic 19th-century sensibilities of panoramic views and vibrant street scenes.

Dutch Sea Chart of the Indian Ocean ~ Year 1680

One of the rarest and most attractive Dutch sea charts focusing on Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Indian Ocean, intended for use at sea by the mariners of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). This copperplate engraving - on thick paper to withstand the elementsappeared in Van Keulen's rare Maritime Atlas in the year 1680 in Amsterdam, and is one of the best and most important working charts of the Dutch Golden age. The map is decorated with compass roses, horizontal and vertical graticules and rhumblines, an elephant, dolphins and galleons. Two decorative figurative cartouches show European traders.

View of Singapore taken from the Government Hill Year 1830

Extremely rare antique aquatint etching titled, “View of Singapore Town & Harbour taken from the Government Hill” Probably the most important and most sought after antique print of Singapore ever made, with only 1500 printed in 1830. Engraved after William Daniell and drawn during his two visits to the Far East. This very unique print was published in the Memoir of the Life and Public Services of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, F.R.S. &c. John Murray, London, 1830.

Rare British Admiralty nautical chart or maritime map of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore, and the Strait of Malacca. Offers countless depth soundings and excellent inland detail, particularly in Perak. Coverage extends roughly from Penang to Pulo Bintang, including the southern part of Malaya and the eastern coast of Sumatra. This chart was first engraved by the British Admiralty Hydrographic Office in 1898. It went through numerous updates and revisions, the most recent major revision being 1945 - likely in anticipation of retaking Malaya and Singapore at the end of World War II. The present chart features minor corrections and updates to 1951.

Noteworthy: Handwritten annotation in the upper left detail an 'Air Firing Bombing' site, suggesting military use.

Singapore Admiralty Nautical Chart ~ Year 1945

Botanical prints by the famous Charles d’Orbigny, from one of the most celebrated works on Natural History from the 19th century 'Dictionnaire Universel D’histoire Naturelle ATLAS'. D'Orbigny (1802 – 1857) was a French naturalist who made major contributions in many areas, including zoology, paleontology, geology, archaeology and anthropology.

Eastern Asia and India, Early Map of the Region ~ Year 1593

This scarce map was published by Gerard de Jode in the year 1593 in Antwerp, Belgium. This map, extending from China and the Philippines to India and Mongolia, is among the most influential maps of Eastern Asia published in the 16th Century. A unique collector's map for those interested in the early mapping of Southeast Asia, and a real cornerstone map in any high-end collection.

Funerals in Chinese folk religion are serious ceremonies. Pictured here is the funeral procession, where a palanquin carries the deceased from the funeral home to the burial site or crematorium. Attendants and mourners walk ahead and behind, burning incense and offering food or hell money for the soul of the departed.

Singapore Chinese Funeral Procession ~ Circa 1890

Southeast Asia ~ circa 1720 - 30 ~ Large English “Test State”

Map

An extremely rare and unique collector's map of Southeast Asia, published around the year 1730 in England. It is the first large scale map of the region published in England and one of the most decorative maps of the region from the 18th century. The uniqueness and rarity of this map is that this is a socalled “test state” map. This can be seen from the empty space above the cartouche, where normally a coat of arms would be engraved, and that the title inside the cartouche box is not completed. Test states, especially from highly collectable maps as these, are extremely rare and many collectors wait a lifetime to find these. This highly desirable and collectable map will be a highlight on any Southeast Asian map collection.
