First Dutch Expedition to the Spice Islands, over 420 Years Old We kick off this catalog with one of our highlights, an extremely rare collector’s map showing the Dutch pioneering voyage to the East Indies between April 1595 and August 1597, in search of the Spice Islands. The map covers the whole route from Amsterdam to the Indonesian archipelago as far north as the north coast of New Guinea, with Terra Australis Incognita containing the usual array of islands and places (Beach, Maleteur and Loach) derived from Marco Polo’s travels. The map also shows a small portion of the coast of Brazil, the most western point of the journey to the east where the sailing ships picked up the strong westerly winds for the journey across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

About Willem Gerard Hofker
After his education at the Hague Art Academy and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, Willem Gerard Hofker married Maria Rueter in 1930. In addition to being a painter and draftsman, W.G. Hofker was a gifted graphic artist and a master of many different types of media. During the 1920-30s, Hofker carried out several decorative assignments such as mural paintings of ships for the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (KNSM), and a portrait of Queen Wilhemina for the head office of the Koninklijke Pakketvaart Maatschappi (KPM), the Royal Packet Navigation Company in Batavia. In 1938 Hofker and his wife came by invitation to the Dutch East Indies and settled in Bali. During the Second World War, Hofker and his wife were interned by the Japanese. After his repatriation in 1946, Hofker settled in Amsterdam. His Indonesian period was particularly fruitful. In addition to a relatively small number of oil paintings, he produced a large number of pastel drawings. With great refinement, he produced a romantic picture of Balinese life. Beautiful Balinese girls and men on their way to the temple or in their daily activities are often the subjects of his work.
Today, many of his paintings are exhibited in the ARMA and the Neka Museum in Ubud.
Singapore, Malaysia, and Sumatra Extremely Rare Map of the Kingdom of Siam A historically important map of Southeast Asia, issued just prior to the Siamese Revolution of 1688, which henceforth restricted European activities in the kingdom. The map extends from the southern part of the Indochinese Peninsula through Malaya, to the northern coastline of Java and the eastern part of Borneo. The adornment of the map with a large elephant, making up the title cartouche, makes this map a favourite among collectors. Title: Royaume De Siam, avec Les Royaumes qui luy sont-Tributaries…

Asia Continent, by the Famous Dutch Cartographer Willem Blaeu One of the most recognizable representations of the continent from the seventeenth century, this map was most up to date for its time, thanks in large part to his access to Dutch East India Company (VOC) charts, but a few features are still notable for their surprising appearances to the modern eye. Korea is shown as an island just barely unconnected to the Asian mainland, while Japan is oddly projected in a horizontal style that was typical of this period. The coast north of Korea is only roughly drawn, as it had not been surveyed in detail. Rare variant edition of Blaeu's map of Asia printed without the ornamental border cartouches.

A series of Southeast Asian botanical lithographs made after watercolour drawings by Berthe van Nooten (1817-1892). Nooten often travelled between Suriname and Indonesia, and it was during these travels that her interest in botanical plants and painting grew. After returning home to the Netherlands, Nooten struggled to get her watercolours published, and it was only through the intervention of the Dutch Queen Sophie Mathilde, wife of the Dutch King William III, that she finally was able to get a selection of her paintings published in 1863.
Singapore Nautical Chart, Large French Map An extremely rare nautical chart of Singapore, issued under the patronage of Louis Philippe I of France. It is centered on the Bantam Islands, including Batnam, Pulau Bulan, and Pulau Brintan. A unique opportunity for the Singapore collector, very suitable for framing.

The "Spice Map”, Map to the East Considered by most collectors to be the holy grail in any Southeast Asian map collection. First published in 1594, covering the Philippines and Maritime Southeast Asia, including the famed Spice Islands. Based on covertly obtained Portuguese manuscript charts. The map is a vast improvement over previously printed maps of the region, with most of the islands well-delineated, well-placed, and correctly named. This map is known as the “Spice Map” for its illustration of nutmeg, clove, and sandalwood along the bottom of the map. The map was published as a means of promoting the commercial importance and viability of prospective Dutch voyages to the Spice Islands.

Asia Continent by the Famous Mercator This map of Asia by the famous Gerard Mercator gives a great view of how Europe looked at the continent of Asia 450 years ago. The coasts of Northeast Asia and Northwest North America are separated by the fabled Strait of Anian. South of this strait, a beautifully engraved galleon gives speculation to the possibility of a northern route to Asia. Sumatra has a curiously archaic outline, while the relationship between New Guinea and Terra Australis is left to the viewer's imagination. The placename "Beach" is taken from Marco Polo's account but erroneously ascribed to locations in the vicinity of present-day Australia.
