The average height of a table is 76cm and the standard seat height is 46cm. In order for you and your guests to sit comfortably the recommended gap between the seat and the bottom of the tabletop is at least 30.5cm. If you opt for a dining chair with an arm then leave 18cm of space from the top of the arm to the bottom of the tabletop.

The average width of a dining chair is 51cm so, our team of stylists suggest estimating 60cm per chair to allow a comfortable amount of space on either side.

Shape

When selecting your centerpiece, the piece de resistance –your dining table – take into consideration the shape and size of the room.

For smaller spaces and in particular square shaped rooms, opt for a round or oval table. They provide a little extra leg room, can often fit more around the table, and are perfect for socialising around.

Looking for something a bit more traditional? You can’t go wrong with the rectangular table. Narrower rectangular tables are always welcoming and warm while those slightly wider ones create a more classic and formal aesthetic to your dining area.

Extendable dining table options can transform and save you space. They’re versatile and flexible and allow you to fit more people comfortably around your dining area when you are entertaining or hosting parties.

For a more formal and classic look opt for a higher backed chair in a button or tufted upholstered option or even a chair with arms. Metallic detailing and darker colours can also enhance the drama and glamour in your room.

An upholstered and light linen or fabric with contrasting legs projects a more contemporary modern look into your space.

Create a casual, relaxed vibe with a lower backed chair, or a fabric in a light colour with complementary or matching legs.
