Side tables are the supporting players to your leading lady sofa and for that reason they are often overlooked or left to last.

For those of us who know better, the well selected yet low-key side table is more that just a landing pad for a drink or table lamp, it speaks of a homeowner who pays attention to detail.

SIDEBOARD STYLE

When styling a sideboard, choose items that add visual interest from all angles, like cylindrical ornaments, coasters, candles or elegant vases.

When choosing your side table, height plays an important role. The height should ideally be equal to, or below the height of your arm chair or sofa to allow guests to have somewhere to easily place their drink down. The exception to this would be nesting tables which allow you a little room to have some extra height. We’d recommend having the shorter table pulled out slightly to create that layered look.

Ever since the Renaissance, cabinets have been among the most luxurious pieces of furniture to grace a home. As art objects, they are cleverly designed to showcase the craftsmanship of their makers, even as they conceal what’s held within. Over the centuries, skilled artisans decorated them with carving, hand-painting, inlays, wooden veneers, floral marquetry, lacquerwork, and bas-relief. They were often placed on stands, becoming the focal point of a room, and held collections—china, seashells, or curiosities—that were hidden from the eye of the viewer by an intricate series of small drawers and cupboards.

Inspired by this sumptuous tradition, Indigo Living’s three new cabinets are created to be feature pieces in their own right. It takes one week for ten artisans to complete each piece, employing a variety of design processes. .

The first cabinet of the trio, ‘Kumo’, was inspired by the Eastern sky—its name is the Japanese word for cloud, and its hand-painted clouds represent good luck. (The Chinese word for cloud is pronounced the same as the word for luck. In traditional Chinese design, clouds repeated in a pattern symbolise eternal good fortune.) The recessed handles simplify its look; within are adjustable shelves, and it also stands on birch wood legs.

The second feature cabinet, ‘Golden Sparrow’, is hand-painted with birds and floral motifs. The goldleaf background adds an antique feel and a touch of glamour, and its legs are made of birch, a pale, finegrained wood with an attractive satin-like sheen. A discreet push-catch opening mechanism reveals a drawer hidden within.

‘Orson’ is decorated in wood veneer for a more subtle choice, and complements a variety of interior aesthetics. Asymmetry reigns supreme—the cabinet’s unbalanced handle arrangement, unique wood grain pattern and rose-gold stainless steel base give it a distinctive, contemporary look with adjustable shelves.

Cabinets are versatile pieces, blending seamlessly into bedrooms, living spaces, dining rooms, and more. They can be dramatic features that draw the eye, or they can recede into the walls—providing an artistic solution to storage shortages and helping to keep your home creatively clutter-free.

Little Wonders

For Rory’s compact 480 sq ft flat in Mid-Levels, Indigo Living’s interior designers were tasked with creating a sense of spaciousness.

“Initially I thought I would struggle to even fit a sofa but suddenly I can fit so much more. It’s stylish,cosy and perfect. They have so much experience with small flats, they know all the tricks.”

Originally from London, he’s been in the city for two and a half years— and his new life has involved some adjustments.

“With the 3D rendering Indigo provided, deciding the best floorplan and what furniture was needed was made easy!” says Rory.

Rory booked a free instore appointment with an Indigo Living interior designer at the flagship Horizon Plaza store, together they chose key furniture pieces and accessories.

However, Rory didnt know how everything would fit in his flat. So he was recomended the online design service package. “It was perfect for me, didnt want to spend too much money or spend my weekend instore. I sent by email all the information they asked for. Within 2 weeks, I had received a floorplan and 3D renderings. With these in hand , I went back to the store to choose the furniture with the layout plans in hand to review together. It definitely gave me the confidence to finalise the project in less time and achieve the look wanted.”

Rory’s brief to Indigo Living was to make the most of his compact living-room space and to create a relaxing area where he could truly kick back. “It also had to be a place that felt happy to invite friends over to,” he says. “It needed to have a functional yet comfortable living space, with somewhere to eat. I wanted to make sure the flat had some colour too, and statement pieces.”

Some of those key pieces included the retroinflected Cooper Sofa and Chairs with their classic curves, pleated backs and sleek metal legs. “They’re comfortable and practical,” says Rory. The Felix Coffee Table is adaptable, allowing different

uses of the space. “All the pieces can be easily moved around and used together or separately, and they nest together for easy storage,” says Rory. Embroidered cushions provided the finishing touch.

The designer chose a blue palette—a colour considered a neutral hue for its simplicity, versatility and calming energy. “It’s a comfortable and friendly colour, too,” says Rory. Modern touches such as plush velvets and brass details serve to bring light into the room, further creating a sense of spaciousness.

Once everything was done, Indigo Living’s installation and styling teams took charge. From start to finish, the whole process took less than three weeks. The result is a refreshing, uplifting space that welcomes guests and showcases both design vision and Rory’s own personality, to perfectly complement a busy and social lifestyle.

The Makeover

Jen is constantly on the go. She’s a busy, full time working mum caring for her five-year-old son, three rescue cats and two rescue dogs, as well as finding time to get to the gym most mornings. But her Kennedy Town flat wasn’t providing the sanctuary, simplicity, or storage she required.

She turned to Indigo Living designer Sean Lim for assistance. “He really took into consideration the flow of the home, my everyday needs and look I wanted to achieve” she says, “I needed a place where can keep things organised, so I can find what need quickly or put things away efficiently.”

Storage was a main component of Jen’s brief, so Sean ensured that every space was fully utilised, creating extra seating within the living area’s bay window, and selecting multi-functional furniture such as the extendable dining table and storage bed.

Another of Jen’s concerns was longevity—her young son needed space to grow into. Her space with low ceilings meant a bunk bed was out of the question, so Sean wisely suggested a trundle bed. That meant he could have a storage drawer for toys which could also transform into an extra bed for sleepovers when he’s older. Meanwhile, the bay-

window area in his bedroom became a bedside storage area for toys which could later become a desk area for doing homework.

Jen’s space was small, but she didn’t want to be confined to all white walls, so Sean chose a light colour palette for the flat—greyish blue tones in the living and dining rooms to provide a backdrop to accent colours, black highlights and touches of brass. “I really like how Sean incorporated colour with greens, blues and dark accents throughout the space,” says Jen, “They don’t make the space feel smaller at all, but add personality and depth.”

Today, Jen’s home is a delight—especially her bedroom. “I love everything about it,” she says. The bedroom has a calm, soothing colour palette and the mirrored bedside table and lighting add a touch of feminine elegance to this room. “The upholstered Carlton Storage Bed is fantastic,” she says. “ can fit so much stuff under the bed and it’s all hidden from view. I like that the headboard has removable easyto-wash cushions, too.”

The project met Jen’s budget and strict timeline for completion, allowing the family to move back in and enjoy their new home right on schedule.

How to Dress a Console
