The first edition of ‘Young Minds’ was released by our honourable Founder Secretary & Chief Managing Trustee – IGI, Dr. Tarita Shankar and Prof. Chetan Wakalkar, Group Director, IGI on 29th July, 2010 and here we are pleased to present the fourth edition of the same. ‘Young Minds’ has turned a year old. It’s indeed a matter of pride to have been associated with ‘Young Minds’. Truly speaking, it has been an enriching experience for me. Special moments come our way when we see the spark in the eyes of the students , the smile on their face looking at their contributions printed in ‘Young Minds’. Thanks to ‘Young Minds’ for unleashing the writer, the poet, the artist within the students and providing them a platform to showcase their creations. Dear Parents, here’s the space where you can voice your expertise on a topic, pour your life experiences into words, explore the possibilities of the career options available in today’s competitive world or advise the students on how to tackle stress and meet the demands of the society. The fourth edition introduces a new section ‘Mom and Dad’s corner’. It gives immense pleasure to place the inaugural article of the same, written as a parent by none other than our first parent Dr. Tarita Shankar. We take this opportunity to welcome the tiny tots of standard first and their parents to the INS family. Wordpower MOM AND DAD'S CORNER My Switzerland trip with my children: Though I had been to Switzerland myself several times prior, my trip this summer vacation to Switzerland with Shaan (6) and Sahil (13) was a fantastic experience better than any! I had to plan a trip where I could show them the Switzerland that appealed to them as children and also give some quality time to myself without making them feel left out. I also wanted them to get the feel of the world famous Swiss rail network. We got ourselves Swiss rail passes from India itself and travelled from place to place by Swiss trains. Two most exciting journeys we did were - the Bernina Glacier Express and the Chocolate train. Both saw endless snow which they so loved. They also experienced rail travelling culture and the art of photography (especially Shaan). Some of my best photographs were clicked by Shaan. We also did the Chocolate train where they got to see the Gruyeres Cheese factory (making of chocolates!!!) and the Nestle Callier Chocolate factory (making & tasting of chocolates !!!) They saw numerous castles, museums, etc. and enjoyed various lake trips. Two of the most unforgettable experiences of their life as children. At the end of each day they gladly allowed their mother a couple of hours at the world famous Swiss Spas (which I so Love!). Dr. Tarita Shankar Parent of Sahil (VII Beta) and Shaan (II Beta)
CORRUPTION: YOUR 'NO' COUNTS! Corruption in India is a now a top most concern. Corruption is the lack of integrity and honesty especially susceptibility to bribery. It misuses a position of trust for fraudulent gain. Corruption is like a spreading termite in the system. Today it has become rampant. Corruption is indeed the prevalent challenge any government is faced with. The system itself is handicapped as its own employees are the corrupt ones. Corruption is the root cause to many developmental issues such as poverty, illiteracy, crime, unemployment, external threats, pollution and many more perilous social issues. All the laws made by the government for the betterment of the people, don’t help the people. They are rendered ineffective by corruption. If every individual says ‘NO’ to corruption things could change for the better. Saying “it’s not only our problem and it’s not all our fault” does not help at all. If we all take a stand against corruption and oppose it, it might well be eliminated from the society. Implementation of existing laws against corruption is very vital. Many of us have come face to face with corrupt practices. Why not stop it right there? Why not speak up right then? That one effort can set the ball rolling and help curb corruption somewhere down the line. Helping stop corruption at small levels is necessary. At higher levels, the initiative to curb corruption in India should come from political parties and our leaders. But let’s always remember- our ‘NO’ to corrupt practices count! If we all pledge against it- we could certainly be making a difference. - Rituja Ravikiran (IX Beta)

WHAT MAKES PEOPLE LAUGH???? If this question had a simple answer, such as a formula that could be learned, you can be sure that every comedian would know it. Many scientists are working on this and are curious to know what makes us laugh. Some put forth some complicated explanations to explain laughter but laughter is a complicated thing and the best explanation for this is only theories… We know of course, that laughter is an expression of many feelings and it is found only in the human beings. In fact, laughter is one of the simplest ways of bursting stress. It is difficult to decide what exactly makes people laugh. Did you know that when we smile we use 17 different muscles and when we frown, we use 43 different muscles??? So you see it is easy to smile and laugh than to frown and be miserable. From the physical point of view, laughter is very good for us as it has the ability to cure stress related problems. It is good for our lungs, it is an outlet for some extra energy. So although no one really knows what makes people laugh, or what the purpose of laughter is, it is a very good medicine and certainly makes us feel better. So keep laughing to be a stress free and a happy person. T. Pavithra (X Alpha) 6

Learning about Learning Disabilities The article in the last edition was an introductory piece on what could be the probable causes of scholastic backwardness. In this article we will focus on an issue that has become a concern for many a parent and children. The issue on hand is learning disabilities or difficulties. Specific Learning Disability (SLD) is a complex, heterogeneous disorder which is characterized by severe difficulty in the mastery of reading, writing, reasoning, spelling, and arithmetic. The child may have difficulties in any one or more than one of the areas. A child with learning disability is considered to have average intelligence and is provided adequate education but in spite of this is not able to perform up to his/her potential academically. Learning disabilities affect about 10 to 40 children out of every hundred children in a school. It is believed that learning disabilities are caused by a difficulty with the nervous system that affects receiving, processing or communicating information. Some learning disabled children are also hyperactive or distractible with a short attention span. Children with learning disabilities can be helped with early intervention, but if no intervention is provided it can have a tragic snowballing effect. For instance, a child who does not learn addition in elementary school cannot understand algebra in high school. The child trying very hard to learn, becomes more and more frustrated, and develops emotional problems such as low self esteem in the face of repeated failure. Some learning disabled children misbehave in school because they would rather be seen as “bad” than “stupid”.
PATH TO EXCELLENCE
Some of the most frequent signs of learning disabilities are:
The dictionary defines excellence as ’ a person so entitled that does his job seamlessly’. Brilliance, distinction, perfection have become very synonymous to our ears. Schools, universities, job-offering companies demand these very qualities in a person. They require someone who can represent their institutions and “raise the bar” for their competitors. Someone, who excels in whatever he does or is going to do in the near future. Thinking practically, who wouldn’t want a person doing his duty flawlessly? In this competitive world, we all have to have some extraordinary qualities that make one different. And it is these qualities that will make one stand out in a crowd. There are a few ground rules for a person to outshine. First, be committed. If a person is committed towards work, his/ her efforts are uncomprising and unending. One is willing to do anything in support of the commitment. Commitment enables us to maintain a high degree of perseverance. Commitment opens the door to mastery and excellence. Secondly, one should stay passionate for whatever he/ she does. Passion is that which moves people. It’s the fire from within that motivates us. Passion gives one the ability to be touched, moved and inspired. Lastly, one has to put in his every ounce of energy to excel. Doing your work with integrity, loyalty, devotion, creativity and innovation is what leads a man on the path of excellence, success and perfection.
• Difficulty in understanding and following instructions
Prakriti Kayastha (X Alpha)
• Trouble in remembering what someone just said • Inability to master reading, writing, math skills and thus finish schoolwork • Difficulty in distinguishing right from left .Example - confusing 25 and 52 or ‘b’ and ‘d’ or ‘on’ and ‘no’. • Poor coordination in walking, sports or small activities such as holding a pencil or tying a shoelace. • Easily loses or misplaces homework, schoolbooks or other items. • Difficulty in understanding time. There are various stakeholders in this; the children, the parents, the teachers, the peers school psychologists and the education system. In the coming issues we will understand what role all the stakeholders play once the problem is identified, how do we diagnose and plan interventions; and how best we can work together to help a child with learning disability.
